FROM THE
EDITOR Big Dreams!! Big Plans!! Big Rewards!! This time of year, as everyone is gearing up for their county fairs, state fairs, and national shows, family comes together to get prepared for each event! You’ve heard the saying “It takes a village.” Well, at this time of year – it does! Everyone will be working together to get the jobs done so everything will go more smoothly: Sharing goals and ideas; encouraging and motivating; practicing and improving skills; planning displays and pens or stalls, packing the tackbox, the trailer, and the snack box! Through all of this, I hope you will take the time to thank your parents, family, friends, breeders, and leaders who have played a part in getting you to where you want to go. You couldn’t do it without “your village!”

Working together is a major part of a project. One of my favorite things to see, as I walk around at the shows, is juniors helping each other! Whether it is in the showring helping someone get their animals shown, or helping clean out pens at the end of the day, or grabbing stall duty, or holding an animal, helping clip or fit, or even sitting and visiting and sharing some good times, working together and caring about fellow exhibitors is a great way to learn and to make new friends. These are the friends and memories that will last a lifetime and bring a smile to your face every time you think about it. These are precious memories – treasure each one!

Every year I comment on how fast the first half of the year goes by. This year has been no exception! Working on California Junior Livestock Association things is a year-round effort. We have been planning an Online Auction fundraiser, so be sure to check out the ad in this issue for all the details. In the past, we held a live auction during our Award Banquet but this year we instead held the Award Ceremonies throughout the day at each show-ring. Our fundraising auctions help us to reach our goals for awards to honor our members each year for their achievements. We have some AWESOME items donated that you will surely want to bid on! Please spread the word and don’t miss out on our 1st annual CJLA Online Auction!
Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
In addition to this fundraiser, it is never too early to start thinking about sponsoring or donating to CJLA. All donations go directly back to our youth membership through our Award Program. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help, give me a call. I would love to talk with you about the CJLA!
Time to Plan Ahead!
In this issue, I love the Graduation Section! It always makes me feel a bit older when I see kids graduating that I watched when they first started showing. I do love seeing their photos from when they were little to where they are now, and reading about their future plans and dreams, where their next step in life will take them! These Seniors are the future of the livestock industry! If they pursue a field in agriculture, they have a background to help them reach and excel in their goals. If they go on to another field, those days spent in the barn and at the fair have given them a work ethic unmatched by any other endeavor and an undying appreciation for production agriculture.

ABOUT THE
COVER
The familiar road we all know so well, the trek to and from our home to jackpots and fairs is a comfortable piece of asphalt that we all have so many memories along. For the Colburn Family that trek occurred along Highway 99 beginning in 1992, when Ron and Lisa Colburn and their sons Tyler and Ryan started buying and breeding heifers to exhibit across the competition California circuit. From the start, it was a family game — with younger sibling Wyatt and Abby tagging along, the family affair was making memories while winning jackpots. As the boys matured so did the Colburn Cattle Company operation. With a maturing operation the Colburn family set one goal, that has become the foundation to their program — produce top-quality cattle for the youth in today’s highly competitive junior livestock arena. We are proud to operate one of California’s most functional show cattle facilities where junior showmen can learn all aspects of the livestock industry. From daily care of cattle, to embryo transfer, our program has opportunities for all level of competitors. As we look to the future of Colburn Cattle we recognize the potential is endless and we could not be more excited for the set of animals we will be presenting at our next events. The highlight of these sales will be our Angus Heifer Sale the last week of March, our Angus Show Heifer Sale the last week of October and our Steer and Cross Bred Heifer Sale the first week of November. One of Abraham Hicks’ most famous quotes is “If you’re not excited about it, it’s not the right path.” Right now, at Colburn Cattle, with the management of the operation led by Matt Avila, we have achieved success never dreamed imaginable. We are humbled by the rewards of our work that started so long ago as a family pounding the pavement on the 99. It’s our dream that we create a path for success for more families chasing jackpots and fair titles. 13

The NILE is offering the experience of a lifetime Oct. 10-20! The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) is looking for college students who are willing and able to work all day and into the night, eat and sleep minimally, handle high pressure situations, work in the extreme weather conditions of October in Montana, and enjoy every minute of it.
set up horse awards, buck bales, and score keep the ranch rodeo. All interns laugh, goof around, and get stuff done. The work details are to be determined, but we guarantee they'll be valuable! We get it, the NILE is during the school months and it's hard to get away, but believe us, it's worth it for the experience! Yes, NILE is a mere four months away, but it's not too soon to start thinking about your future. Many of the NILE's past interns are gainfully employed and attribute some of their success to the NILE internship experience. Apply today and set yourself up for success.
NILE staff is looking for those college kids who are little obsessed, a little quirky, and have a lot of heart. We want those who eat, breathe, and sleep stock shows and rodeos. We want those who can function on minimal sleep and maximum caffeine. College kids who have brains and brawn-handle high pressure critical thinking and not be afraid to pick up a pitch fork.
All we are missing is this year's group of interns! It could be YOU! Want more information on how to apply? Go to www.thenile.org for all the answers! All applications must be in the NILE Office by August 30, 2019, and interns will be announced shortly thereafter.
From the bright lights of the rodeo arena, to the heart pounding hooves of the horse events and finally to the smells of adhesives in the cattle barn, you won't want to miss out on the action! The internship is ten days of early mornings and late nights. Some interns work the livestock show ring; checking in exhibitors, lining up steers, shuffling sheep, and recording results. Other interns JULY/AUGUST 2019

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES
current and past members and anyone who has signed up for email news through the CJLA website. We will continue to post and eblast updates as we get those completed. If you do not get emails from us, PLEASE let us know so we can check to be sure we have a correct email for you! Our E-blasts are sent through Constant Contact from the cjlainfo@yahoo.com email. Most of our correspondence is by email so it is important that you are receiving them!
Summer is in full swing and we hope you are enjoying the sunny weather and school vacation! Of course summer brings county fairs and the big California State Fair, so for CJLA kids, summer also means a lot of time in the show barn. Be sure to check out the Sanctioned Show List for upcoming shows in the months ahead. There are still plenty of shows ahead as we enter the second half of 2019 so make plans to attend as many as you can to show off your animals, improve your skills, and earn points in your CJLA divisions. WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC SHOW IN BAKERSFIELD IS ADDING ALL SPECIES TO THEIR EVENT IN DECEMBER! THIS MEANS THEY WILL HAVE 2 SHOWS EACH FOR STEERS, HEIFERS, MKT HOGS, MKT LAMBS AND WETHER DAM DOES, MKT GOATS AND WETHER DAM EWES!
And be sure to contact us anytime if you have questions about points or CJLA or anything related to showing your animals. We are here to help! The CJLA is having an Online Auction Fundraiser! This replaces the Live Auction we used to have during the annual Award Banquet. Since we changed the Award Presentation this year, we did not have an auction at that time. This auction is an important fundraiser for us! Check out the ad in this issue and see what you would like to bid on! Everyone’s support is very much appreciated and goes a long way in helping the CJLA reach their goals to award its members for their achievements.
We have a first set of points listed in this issue. ALL SHOWS ARE INCLUDED THROUGH NORTHERN EXPOSURE EXCEPT FOR WESTERN BONANZA AND CATTLEMENS JACKPOTS. We just received Cattlemen’s Jackpot report prior to going to print, and Western Bonanza report was not in our required format so will take longer to process. Our point tabulator has been busy transferring show reports and getting points calculated. In order to get a list in this issue, she had to reach a stopping point so she could get a total completed and turned in by the production deadline. HOWEVER, she is planning to do another update by the end of July so as you read this, we may have already sent another update by E-blast to members and posted on the CJLA website. We are posting new updates there and we are also sending out new updates by eblast to all
As you travel down the road to the next show, be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! Stay safe, and thank your crew that helps you get it all done. And say Thanks to those awesome people who work so hard to put on those shows you attend! CJLA Questions? Stay up-to-date with what's going on at Pacific Showcase! JULY/AUGUST 2019
The quality of the applications ran deep in our 2019 Distinguished $20,000 Sullivan Supply/Stock Show University Scholarship program. 1,419 applications from 45 states and Canada proves that the interest of our Ag youth runs deep. This is such a great time to be a part of this great livestock show industry. To look through these applications and read what these young adults are accomplishing makes us proud to be a part of it all. A huge thank you to our scholarship selection committee of industry leaders (non-Sullivan Supply employees or family members) who spend so many volunteer hours choosing our 20 winners. Congratulations to all our winners and applicants. Over $220,000 has been gifted to young individuals since the inception of this program in 2008. Sincerely, John Sullivan, Founder Sullivan Supply and Stock Show University
JACE STAGEMEYER, Page, NE There was no easy path to the champion banners but this self-taught showman prevailed to win major shows in the heifer arena and showmanship. Hardwork and determination pays off!
CARLYE WINFREY, Seminole, TX One of the premier sheep showman in the country. Despite the wins, what is most impressive is Carlye’s unique combination of humility and her extremely competitive spirit. A multiple national FFA award winner.
TYLER PINKERTON, Liberty, IN AJCA president, IGBCA officer, numerous FFA awards. This livestock collegiate judge also found time to attend auctioneer school and travel the country fitting numerous champions. Sponsored with Sullivan Supply, Justin Shoufler
KYLIE PICKARD, Hastings, MI Kylie is a major contributor in the day to day work of her large cow herd. A true herdsman yet she finds time to maintain a 4.0 GPA, is FFA president and a leading member of the AJCA board. Sponsored with Fair Acres Show Supply
TAR TUT, Faribault, MN Not having grown up in the industry, Tar found a passion for livestock. You name it and he excels. Student council president, livestock judging team and showmanship champion. Talented behind the camera and a top notch clipper.
KASSIDY BREMER, Redfield, IA Her true grit and determination has led her to be one of the best young fitters and showman in the country. She is the epitome of what the Sullivan scholarship stands for.
