FROM THE
EDITOR Here we are – at the start of County Fair season! I know many of you have been competing at jackpots since the first of the year with animals that will ultimately end up at your county fair. All those weekends have been preparing you and your animal for the best possible experience at their final destination. When you think of each practice or each jackpot as steps, or building blocks, toward the show where you want to excel, then you have set a goal in your mind and it is highly likely you that will achieve that goal! It is exciting when the plan comes together and, of course, along the way you have encountered new experiences and increased your knowledge and skills.

The County Fair is where your skills in showing and animal husbandry will be on display and used by you to do your best in the show ring. It is also the time to “market” your animal. Have you spent time before fair working on your marketing approach and skills? The fair you attend puts on a livestock auction for animals that the judge says are ready for market. That means you are eligible to sell your animal according to the judge and fair rules, but it does not guarantee the price you will receive or that there will be a buyer for your animal.
Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com Representatives: Kaela Cooper Tiffany Carter
Sure, if you win or place high in the live show, there will be buyers for those animals, but you should never presume there will be buyers and good prices for all the animals sold. You have invested a lot of time and money into your animal project and marketing should be a part of the process of raising that project from selection to the end fair.

Here in California we are fortunate that most County Fairs have a great buyer base that believes in supporting youth in agriculture. I know from experience that many of those buyers do their research too. They read all the letters from the 4-H and FFA kids asking for their support, they walk around the fair and look at animals and talk with the exhibitors about their project, and they then decide who they want to help and how they will support the auction.
Pacific Showcase limits its liability resulting from any and all errors, misprints and/or other inaccuracies in the advertisements and editorial content. The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase. Reproductions or other use of this magazine in whole or part of the contents without written permission of the editor is prohibited. Pacific Showcase welcomes readers contributions. Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above.
So I encourage each of you to make a marketing plan! Figure out how much money you have put into your project, i.e.; purchase price, feed costs, supplies, and any other expenses you have. How much would you like to sell your animal for to either cover your expense, or use toward your next project? Then look at what the average prices have been in the past at your County Fair. Is that within in reason of your own expenses?
Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160.
Realistically, the price received at a County Fair auction may not cover all your jackpot show costs or all the extra expenses you put into your project, but if you can recover the cost of your animal and feed and some of the essential expenses you had, then that may be a starting point for you to work with. Expenses and the amount you would like to recover is something you will need to determine for your individual project. YOU CAN MAXIMIZE YOUR RESULTS if you are willing to work on your marketing. Take time to write good letters to buyers, include pictures, and follow up with a visit or phone call. Buyers like to see sellers who are motivated, goal oriented, and know their project!
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

In this issue we highlight the All Around Kids! There are so many of you who show and do other activities also. I know it takes a lot of time and support to fit it all in when there are only so many hours in the day. California Youth Claims National Western Stock Show Premier Award The junior livestock competitions held during the National Western Livestock Show in Denver are much more than showing an animal. The livestock Premier Exhibitor competition is a unique educational opportunity provided to the top junior market livestock exhibitors. Each year, a total of 95 participants (out of almost 1200 youth exhibitors) from the junior market goat, lamb, swine & steer shows qualify to sell their animal in the Junior Livestock Auction. This elite set of kids are then required to take an industry-related quiz, give a 2-minute speech on an industryrelated topic and complete an interview with a panel of judges. Other components included in their overall Premier Exhibitor score include their live placing, showmanship placing & participation, and the carcass quality of their market animal. Divisions included in each species are Young Premier Exhibitor (ages 12 and under) and Senior Premier Exhibitor (ages 13-18). Although the Young Division Winners receive a Banner and plaque, the Senior Champion and Reserve Champions in each species are awarded $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships respectively.
Lambs and sired by Puppet Master, Madison’s wether won his class in the Blackface Market Lamb Division. This made her eligible for the Junior Livestock Auction as well as competing further in the Premier Exhibitor competition. Following the quiz, speech, and interview, Madison returned home to wait for the final results. When the results were announced, her wether had won the Champion Market Lamb Carcass Award and she had won the title of Premier Market Lamb Exhibitor. Madison said it “was a quite a surprise to receive the news and that this award meant everything to her”!
For Madison Woods, of Gustine, California showing her market lamb at Denver was a big accomplishment. Bred by Estes Show MAY/JUNE 2018

LEAD Conference: Under the Big Sky in Montana Early registration deadline for junior members is June 15.
The Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference is set to take place August 2-5 in Billings, Montana. The 2018 event theme is “Angus Under the Big Sky” and is designed for National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members age 14 to 21.
y a d r u t Sa
Junior Angus members will travel across the nation to experience local agriculture and will partake in leadership workshops put on by the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB). According to NJAB Leadership Director Jordyn Wagner, LEAD gives participants a chance to leave the cattle at home, grow as a leader and build relationships with peers.
STEER, HEIFER, LAMB, SWINE & GOAT JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SHOW
June 16th, 2018
“LEAD is an opportunity that comes around once a year where our juniors can leave their cattle at home and spend a long weekend making friends, going out of their comfort zones and learning more about the industry,” Wagner said. “As a breed, we are not only focused on building up cattlemen and women but we want to help guide these juniors to be leaders, listeners and advocates of the agriculture industry.”
Held at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds — Tulelake, CA May arrive Friday, June 15th; RV Spaces Available. Compete at two jackpot shows on Father's Day Weekend!
Angus juniors will have the opportunity to hear from Darryl Stevenson on Angus diversity, Angus Ambassador Sydni Lienemann and American humorist Jane Herlong.
The Klamath Jackpot Steer & Heifer Show
Tour stops include: Genex Bull Stud, a trusted provider of world-class animal genetics; Midland Bull Test, one of the top performance tests in the Northwest; Billings Livestock Commission, one of the oldest, continuous livestock auctions in America; ORIgen Beef, one of the most innovative and independent bull studs in the nation and Vermilion Ranch, home of award winning Angus cattle.
is Sunday, June 17th in Klamath Falls, OR — just 30 minutes north of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds.
In addition, junior members will participate in numerous breakout sessions and a float trip down a nearby river.
ENTRIES DUE JUNE 8TH Late entries will be accepted with late fee. Entry information and show schedule available at
www.tbvfair.com
For more information, call:
Greg Herman: 541-892-4786
“Junior Angus members will have the chance to explore what Montana has to offer. I am blessed to have the opportunity to watch these young leaders from all over the United States grow as individuals, connect with the beef industry and network with their Angus family.” Wagner said. Conference space is limited and the early registration deadline is June 15. The early registration fee for NJAA members is $250. After June 15, registration will be $275 and accepted based on space availability. Sign up online at www.angus.org/njaa.
LEAD Scholarship Opportunities First or second-time LEAD attendees may consider applying for the Gary M. Stoller Jump Start Your LEADership Award, which helps provide financial assistance with LEAD travel expenses. Interested applicants must submit a one-page typed essay expressing why the LEAD conference is important, what they hope to gain by participating, and the extent of their financial needs. For more information, visit www. angus.org. In honor of his dedication to the Angus breed, the family of the late Stan Prox, Macomb, Ill., created the Stan Prox Memorial LEADers Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Award. Contributions from friends and family in his honor will award one NJAA member with funds necessary to cover LEAD registration costs. The recipient will be selected by random drawing from those Illinois youth who registered for the LEAD conference by the early registration deadline. If an individual is already receiving funding through the Angus Foundation for this purpose, another name will be drawn. For more information, contact the events and education department at 816-383-5100. LEAD is funded by the Angus Foundation and is a program of the NJAA, which provides programs for nearly 7,000 members across the nation. A tentative schedule follows.

NEWS & UPDATES! As we approach the summer months, I know many of you have been wondering when points will be posted. As this issue of the magazine arrives in your mailbox, we should have the first set of points posted on the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo. com. We also send an e-blast out to all 2018 members letting you know points are posted. If you do not get an email from us, PLEASE let us know so we can check to be sure we have a correct email for you! Most of our correspondence is by email so it is important that you are receiving them! For those of you new to CJLA, the first months of the year are very busy for us –with registering new members, putting on the Award Banquet for last year’s members, and getting in show result reports from each show as they are completed. There has always been some confusion in the past when we posted the points up to a certain date but not all shows were included because we had not received them yet from some shows. This year we decided to post the first set of points following the MJC Classic Jackpot held on April 7th and we will have included every show held to that date. I understand that means it is taking us a bit longer to get a point update to you but we think you will like it better and it will be a more accurate view of the standings. ON THE EXCITING SIDE, BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE SHOW LIST AND THE UPCOMING EVENTS PAGE BECAUSE WE HAVE FIVE!! NEW SHOWS JUST ADDED THAT YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS!
both division and showmanship are the number of shows you earned points at in that division. It often happens at the end of the year that placings change based on this tie-breaker rule! So keep on trucking and keep on showing! And be sure to contact us anytime if you have questions about points or CJLA or anything related to showing your animals. We are here to help! In this issue Check out the Banquet Feature! February 17th, 2018 was the date we recognized the 2017 members for their hard work and achievements over the past year. It was an awesome evening of family, friends, sponsors, and great kids! We are so grateful to all our sponsors and supporters who help to make this event all come together for our members. For those of you who could not make it to the banquet – we have your awards and t-shirt packets and would like to get those to you! Please contact Heidi at the phone number or email below and she will take your shipping information. As you travel down the road to the next show, be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! Stay safe, and thank your crew that helps you get it all done. And say Thanks to those awesome people who work so hard to put on those shows you attend!
Unfortunately, Rolling Hills Boeranza decided to cancel their CJLA Shows in December. If you are in the Goat Division, that means Harvest Moon will be your last shows of the year, so plan accordingly!

I have been a member of the California Junior Livestock Association for the past four years. I recently saw your posting for the David Spaulding Scholarship and thought I would be the perfect candidate based on involvement in CJLA, my knowledge/hands on experience in the swine industry, and wanting to continue my passion of becoming an Agriculture instructor in the future.
As a Los Banos High School student, I have always been an active member of the FFA organization where I have gained knowledge and hands on experience in the agriculture industry. Currently, I have an extensive, supervised agriculture experience (SAE) 2016 2016 2017 project that consists of raising and breeding market swine. In addition, I have work experience at PowChampion Market Hog Champion York Gilt Reserve Supreme erhouse Farms in Los Banos, under the guidance of Hog Nathan Copp where I have learned first hand how to feed balanced-rations, health check, vaccinate, train and clip swine. The past two years I have served on the California Junior Livestock Association Board and California Pork Producers Association Youth Ambassador to plan, prepare, inspire other about the swine industry. In addition, it was a true honor to have been given the CJLA sportsmanship award in the Hog Division and have placed numerous times in showmanship, and in the hog division. My plan after graduation is to attend Modesto Junior College and work at the West Campus Swine Unit then transfer to California State University Fresno to get my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and my teaching credential. I have a team-player with strong leadership skills as I am currently involved in California Scholastics Federation, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society ASB Representative, and a member of the WAC champion varsity tennis team at Los Banos High School. Outside of school, I am Heritage Youth Ambassador for the Merced County Spring Fair where I present the importance of agriculture, 4-H and FFA programs to various clubs/organizations throughout the year. I attached a resume, video, and flyer for your review and consideration. In summary, I hope you will consider my application for a scholarship based on my leadership skills, academics and my commitment to the agriculture industry. If you have any questions or would like to discuss my application please do not hesitate to contact me at (209)509-8561. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Corie Lee Falaschi

CJLA Essay Contest "Passion, Determination, Compassion, Likeability"
softball field. Leaders must be stable, they keep it cool when a problem occurs and never show negativity toward teammates, opposing players, or – when facing a blown call – toward an umpire. Having a cool head on your shoulders, and being able to inspire and lead, are traits that can be used out in the real world and I’m proud to say that I used them all the time to help our team. I had a knack for keeping the teams spirits up and motivating everyone. But as the saying goes “All good things must come to an end” Playing 4-7 games a weekend became too much of a challenge to my knee and I decided to hang the cleats up.
By Marissa Pendleton, 1st Place Winner, 16-19 Division “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” ~ Maya Angelou.
Every story has an end but in life every ending is just a beginning. Being the active child that I am, there was no keeping me down. Having been around sheep all my life, I set out to expand my experience and go back to showing in jackpot shows. It had been a couple of years since I traveled to some of the CJLA shows and thought what better timing then now to get back in the ring. One of the biggest returns you can learn from animals is compassion. You need to care for your animals and work with them, you spend more time with your animals then probably anyone else and learn to enjoy each one of them. Learning compassion is one of the best ways to make the world a better place. This is a trait that I use inside and outside of the ring. The friendships I have gained through CJLA will stay with me for a lifetime. I enjoy helping everyone out at the shows and I think my knack for being compassionate reflects strongly when I always put a smile on my face and lend a helping hand.
Passion is a very important virtue; it drives us to do what we love. Maya Angelou knows that without passion our lives may never reach their full potential. If you take nothing else from Dr. Angelou it should be to follow your passions, wherever they lead you. Find a way to do what you love and do it well. For me, finding passion in my day to day life has not been difficult. There are a variety of things I have loved to do. From playing sports, spending time with my family and friends to FFA activities, showing sheep and 4-H. I do turn to Maya Angelou’s passionate inspiration however, when I start to question my ambitions, and wonder how they will later serve me in life. The Maya Angelou quote which answers that call of doubt, is this one: “You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.”
Being compassionate leads to likeability. If you show you truly care about people and want to help them, the two go hand in hand. Recently I had a competitor feel comfortable talking to me about her personal situation. Because she was successful, others were not kind to her. It broke my heart to hear this story of people saying mean hurtful things to her and not wanting to include her in their circles. I listened to the story, tried to hide the tears and gave her a big hug. Later in the day I checked in with her and reiterated my sentiments to her.
In life, I have had obstacles thrown at me and caused me to reevaluate my passions. In 2012, I had a serious injury to my leg, a cut got infected and I spent the summer in the hospital fighting for my life. 14 surgeries later, they removed all the infected tissue and muscles. I'm so lucky to be alive and to have kept my leg. Before my injury I was an all-around athlete, fastest girl runner in my class, played soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball. I lived to play sports. Unfortunately, there was so much damage to my leg and with having muscles removed I could no longer play soccer, there wasn't enough strength to kick the ball. I became the slowest runner in my class and an uncoordinated basketball player. I was determined to not let this get me down; I spent a lot of time and energy in physical therapy working hard to regain strength in my leg. I was told I probably wouldn't be ready for softball for a few years. I was determined to prove them wrong. I worked double time and come that January I was practicing with my softball team. That May I was selected as one of the all-star members and a year to the day of my injury, I was playing in the all-star championship game and my team won!!
Traveling year round with my team to various stock shows in California and Oregon showing sheep has brought so many life lesson experiences my way. The team camaraderie that has developed from traveling all over together and spending extended weekends together is a trait that teaches team building and bonding. Learning to work well with others is so beneficial and will help me in all future endeavors. Even though we work together as a team, we compete against each other at the shows. We learn to win and lose with grace and support each other even when the outcome might not be as favorable. As I have grown and improved with the association, I enjoy working with the younger members helping them excel in their projects and sharing in their successes. In life, Passion allows you to be more than you think you can. It drives you to push limits and it gives you the opportunity to inspire. If you add determination to the mix, nothing’s impossible. Include compassion & likeability and you have a well-rounded set of skills to use in all facets of life. I believe I am fortunate to possess these qualities, I have learned these skills from all the different groups I’ve been involved in and look forward to strengthening these skills and learning more in the future.
I found a passion in Softball and it became my favorite sport. I began playing on travel teams and played softball all year long, traveling all over the state playing anywhere from 4-7 games a weekend. I was loving life and almost forgot I had any problems with my leg. I was well liked and could bond with the members on my team and practice true leadership experiences. Each team needs to have leaders in some of the players, a couple people that others can look to and know that when in doubt they're going to try and pick it up. Whether emotionally talking to teammates, encouraging and rallying the team together, or leading by example, great leaders show many of the same qualities on the MAY/JUNE 2018

"Passion, Innovation, Generosity"
of our valley under “evacuation orders”, my parents and I made it to the Junior Grand Nationals and I completed another successful CJLA run.
By Chancelyn Johnson, 1st-Place Winner, 13-15 Division
Another character trait I rely on as a CJLA member is “innovation.” Innovation to me means stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new opportunities. During my first two years in CJLA I was blessed to work with a livestock coach and show team. This past year, my family and I made a big, difficult decision to shift our work and instead invest that money into better livestock. This decision led to new investments in livestock and opened more opportunities for learning. By investing in high-end livestock, I started developing new relationships with breeders and show kids who quickly became critical mentors in my learning. Over the year, I have appreciated the guidance of these leaders in the industry. My work with breeders continues as they are amazing leaders and mentors in not only the livestock industry, but my future. As a part of working with successful breeders I was encouraged to consider new ideas, such as showing at national shows. Innovation took hold this past fall when this dream became a reality and I was able to attend several large national livestock shows, the American Royal (Kansas City) and NAILE (Louisville).
Three CJLA divisions, 59 shows, 42 showmanship classes, 16 lambs, 10 market goats, 4 does plus countless friendships and miles traveled... this past year, attending CJLA shows around the state has been a crazy, successful and unforgettable experience! Although I started my livestock career as a “county fair kid”, raising my own flock of wether dam sheep and following in the footsteps of my three older siblings, in 2015 my parents and I decided to reach beyond our comfort zone and explore the world of CJLA. Through this experience, the past three years have been filled with goal setting, learning and expansion. While being blessed with many buckles, banners and backdrops the past few years, the greatest gifts I have received have come through the character traits I have developed. Weaver Leather’s Characters for Success Principles to Live & Lead speak to my heart. It was difficult to narrow down the list as I identify with so many of these critical principles that all of us should live and lead by. This past year, there were three principles that define my experience: passion, innovation and generosity.
This year, I have applied a third principle to my life and leadership work, this character trait is “generosity”. At CJLA shows, I have had the ability to obtain information and learning from different judges and livestock professionals which has helped me to give back to others. This consistent assessment has helped me to develop an awareness on what the current trends are in the industry and why judges place animals. This past year I took this knowledge and shared it with local show kids in weekly clinics. I used FaceTime for long-distance coaching, One of my favorite days was at a local fair when the kids I had coached, who had been struggling in previous years to succeed, took top awards in all showmanship divisions! I was so joyful to see how the help I offered each week encourage other kids to succeed!
The trait of “Passion” has served me well as I consistently aspired this year to attend every CJLA sanctioned show through the state for three divisions. Sometimes as a 15 year old girl, I have to remember to do “teenage things”, such as hanging out with my friends, exploring new recipes in the kitchen and playing on my high school’s volleyball team because my true passion is livestock. I love breeding them, caring for them, and learning about them. This past year, my passion drove me to spend afternoons and evenings in my barn prepping my animals for upcoming events. Although not always easy to attend all CJLA shows, I accomplished this goal!
Over the past three years, CJLA and the livestock industry have become a part of my life. They have provided me the opportunity to live my passion for showing livestock on a daily basis, be innovative about investing my resources and build relationships, plus help others learn the skills I have been fortunate to gain. Ending my second year at the top of the Meat Goat division, and my first year at the top of the new Wether Dam Doe division, the following quote summarizes my journey on this crazy 2017 CJLA ride...
It was my passion for livestock that helped me during the challenges presented by the California fires in October. The Redwood Complex fire, which left many homeless in Mendocino County, started just down the road from my home leaving, our farm without power for over a week. Of course, this would also be the week of Cow Palace, which posed the challenge of how to fit my animals and attend this show. Although I wanted to stay home and help take care of our flock of 60 ewes (who had no water at the time), my passion to complete my CJLA commitment pushed me to problem solve, get a generator and get my animals fit to show in San Francisco. Hauling out
“Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard, then succeed on purpose."

"Determination and Attitude"
starting to pay off. All year my coaches and teammates teach me to stay determined, like when they give me pep talks, help me fit my animals, and support me from the edge of the ring. With their support, my determination has helped get to the next level of showing livestock. Competing at this level is something I am very fortunate to be doing. CJLA has shaped me by giving me incentives to work hard because it pays off. CJLA has taught me to be determined but also have a good attitude in and out of the ring and shaped me into the teenager I am today. Being determined is important but having a good attitude is even more important. Others’ behavior will reflect on your attitude leading to more than just a few people’s attitudes changing. Attitude is something everyone notices. People watch your attitude and it reflects on you in the future. I’ve noticed the judges watch your attitude throughout the day and it reflects how you do in showmanship. If you don’t have a good attitude in the livestock world it makes you look like you don’t have good sportsmanship. That’s something everyone notices in and out of the show world. From the first time I showed in CJLA to now, participating has shaped me into the person I am and will be. CJLA has helped me have a good attitude while still having determination. Not only has it taught me to be self motivated and focused but CJLA has made me imagine myself getting a further education doing something in the livestock industry. The Weaver Leather Principles to Live and Lead can be helpful to anyone who is faithful to showing livestock. Attitude and determination are just two words that I live by as I am committed to showing livestock. CJLA is definitely something I recommend for kids my age who are involved in the livestock world.
By Bailey Anderson, 1st-Place Winner, 9-12 Division General Colin Powell once said, “A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.” People think I am crazy but I know it as everyday life. Working with my animals bright and early before school and late at night after school I just think of it as having determination and a good attitude. These traits have made me grow to love breeding and showing livestock. Being raised on a sixty acre farm near Madras, while raising a flock of Club Lamb breeding ewes, has taught me a lot. When I became involved with CJLA (California Junior Livestock Association) it opened up many more opportunities. I have learned, by watching my family, what determination and having a good attitude at all times means. I began my showing career at my county fair and learned just how much determination I would need. I later leaned towards a few in state jackpot shows. I needed to step up my game and be determined for the next level of my showing career. In May of 2016 I had the opportunity to show on a California team, showing in CJLA. A few months later, I decided I should do this and I began showing both sheep and goats in CJLA. I knew I would have to make sure I had the determination to stay competitive at this higher level of competition. CJLA offers more shows than the Oregon Jackpot Show Circuit and I needed to broaden my horizon and stay focused to make it to that level. By March I won my first goat showmanship. Winning made me realize my determination and hard work was finally

Angus Foundation Announces Talon Youth Education Learning Program Intern, Host Ranch Morgan Scilacci, Baker City, Ore., will intern with Sitz Angus Ranch, Dillon, Mont. Kansas State University, he currently serves as vice noble ruler of alumni relations for Alpha Gama Rho, an agricultural fraternity, and is involved in the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Club, where he serves on the officer team. He is also a member of Alpha Zeta Honorary and is a justice in the Student Governing Association.
Real-world opportunities are a great addition to any student’s learning. The Angus Foundation is pleased to introduce Morgan Scilacci, Baker City, Oregon, as the Talon Youth Education Learning Program Intern, which will give him the opportunity to have that real-world experience this summer. Scilacci will intern with Sitz Angus Ranch, Dillon, Montana.
“Morgan is just the type of student that Cam Cooper wanted to provide with opportunities in the beef industry,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “We believe he will gain a tremendous amount of experience from his internship with Sitz Angus Ranch.”
The Talon Youth Education Learning Program internship is the legacy of Camron “Cam” Cooper of Talon Ranch. Cooper set up the Angus/Talon Youth Education Learning Program Endowment Fund in 2009 to be a holistic educational experience for students.
Sitz Angus Ranch is a 2,000-head registered Angus herd on more than 40,000 acres in southwest Montana. The ranch has its own intern program and has hosted interns since the late 1970s. The ranch looks forward to providing Scilacci with a hands-on experience. He will be involved in all day-to-day activities, including heat detection, AI breeding, sorting cattle, pasture herd health, irrigating and assisting with the farming operations. He will have the opportunity to attend cattle video auctions, interact with commercial and registered breeders, and attend beef cattle producer educational activities with the Sitz family.
The internship program pairs motivated Angus youth with working registered Angus breeders/ranches to provide youth valuable education and work experience for a summer. The internship program is open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent college graduates under age 25 who are majoring in an agricultural field of study. Scilacci is a sophomore at Kansas State University, where he is pursuing an animal science degree. Scilacci’s future goals are to obtain his master’s degree in ruminant nutrition and from there, possibly pursue a degree in law and become a constitutional lawyer. His long-term and most important goal is to keep, maintain and continue to improve his family cattle operation.
“We feel Sitz Angus Ranch is a great learning center,” said Jim Sitz, ranch owner. “We look forward to welcoming an intern to our team.”
“By completing this internship, I hope to become a more wellrounded cattleman and producer by learning how another operation is similar and different,” Scilacci said. “In the future, I hope to return to my family’s cattle operation and be a steward for the Angus breed and industry.”
“We believe Sitz Angus Ranch and Morgan are a great match for the Talon Youth Education Learning Program Internship,” Jenkins said. “We are confident that Morgan and his host ranch family will learn from each other, and Morgan will grow personally and professionally as a result of this educational internship experience.”
In addition, Scilacci is a six-year member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and is also a member of the Oregon Junior Angus Association and Oregon Cattlemen.
For more information about the Angus Foundation, call 816-3835100 or email mjenkins@angusfoundation.org.
Scilacci’s leadership extends beyond the Angus industry. At
News and Notes from the California Pork Producers Association
Junior Director Program
"Bill" Silveira Scholarship
The California Pork Producers Association Junior Director Program provides an opportunity for junior members to develop relationships with member and industry stakeholders.
As each year passes, more and more people realize that impact that William “Bill” Silveira had on the California Pork Producers Association (CPPA). A visionary, Bill poured his heart and soul into making CPPA Work for pork producers. This legacy still lives today. After Bill’s passing his loving wife Sofia started a scholarship fund for junior CPPA members in his memory. Bill believed in young people and knew providing them opportunities would pay dividends well into the future. The Silveira Scholarship Fund was established to help cultivate future CPPA and agriculture industry leaders. With the support of a number of CPPA members, the fund continues to grow. The scholarship is presented to hard working and dedicated pork producers who are pursuing a college education with financial assistance. The scholarship is awarded to the most qualified recipient and awarded at CPPA’s Pork Spectacular. Applications available in Word and PDF. Deadline to apply: June 1, 2018. http://calpork.com/producer-resources/youth-programs/williamsilveira-scholarship/
The program is designed to expand upon young people’s knowledge of the pork industry, further develop one’s verbal and written communication skills, while providing the opportunity to serve in a leadership role. The successful candidate(s) will gain valuable experience and develop long-lasting relationships with industry stakeholders. The objective of the program is to provide the opportunity for a qualified group of young individuals to become better acquainted with the swine industry, improve their communication and leadership skills, while promoting the California Pork Producers Association mission to industry stakeholders and the pork sector to consumers. Application available in PDF and Word. Deadline to apply: June 1, 2018 To apply: http://calpork.com/producer-resources/youth-programs/ cppa-junior-director/

1– Just send their senior picture AND a picture when they first started showing. 2– Write their name, the town they're from, the name of the high school they're graduating from, the college they are attending, the major they've chosen, and the species they showed — on a piece of paper and send them in to:
Pacific Showcase P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160
Deadline to send pictures in is June 15th. We will be featuring these pictures in the July/August issue. Also, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want the pictures back. You can also send the photos and information by email to
pacificshowcase@gmail.com. Please put "Graduating" in the subject line!
