Representing Junior Showmen West of the Rockies

FROM THE

EDITOR Wow! Just WOW! Since the last issue when we were all looking forward to the coming months and the multitude of activities on the calendar, things have quickly changed! Covid-19 sent everyone into an in-place lockdown which has never happened before to this extreme. Talk about a rude awakening! Day to day life has changed for every single person in this country in some way – from being able to go out and do whatever we want, to being told that venues and stores and events are closed or have new policies. We can’t hug friends, go to ball games, go out to eat, or attend our fairs and jackpots! My heart breaks for all the juniors who have had their dreams dashed when their fair shut down. As the days have passed, and this new reality is sinking in, a bit of the chaos has settled down and I feel everyone is more hopeful or positive about the future and how to proceed to make the best of things. I know most fairs are working hard to figure out a way to help the juniors market their project animals. When I was young and raising my projects, I started with a loan from the bank to buy my animals to the end point where I showed and sold them at my county fair, paid back the loan and got ready for the next cycle. One of the most important parts of reaching the culmination of a project was marketing my animal. I wrote and sent out letters to potential buyers, I would visit with local businesses, and I would reach out to anyone in my community who I thought would be interested in supporting my project, who were interested in kids in 4-H and FFA, and who would have a use for a good home raised meat animal. In other words, I had to market my animal and get it sold! So even if you don’t have a fair to take your animal to, you can still finish your project by using your knowledge and salesmanship to secure a buyer. Yes, things may be different but let’s all keep a positive attitude, work together, embrace a new normal, and keep our industry strong and moving forward!

In this issue we highlight the CJLA Awards Program held in February during the Western Bonanza weekend! We are so proud of all our 2019 winners! Be sure to check out the pages listing all our winners in each division. We want to apologize now, because we do not have any photos! The photographer’s computer crashed and he was not able to retrieve our photo file. There was nothing that could be done. It was still a great weekend and I am continually thankful for my crew who made it all run smoothly and to the Western Bonanza staff who helped with whatever was needed. And a huge thanks to all our supporters without whose help it would not be possible to do what we do each year.

Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

The familiar road we all know so well, the trek to and from our home to jackpots and fairs is a comfortable piece of asphalt that we all have so many memories along. For the Colburn Family that trek occurred along Highway 99 beginning in 1992, when Ron and Lisa Colburn and their sons Tyler and Ryan started buying and breeding heifers to exhibit across the competition California circuit. From the start, it was a family game — with younger sibling Wyatt and Abby tagging along, the family affair was making memories while winning jackpots. As the boys matured so did the Colburn Cattle Company operation. With a maturing operation the Colburn family set one goal, that has become the foundation to their program — produce top-quality cattle for the youth in today’s highly competitive junior livestock arena. We are proud to operate one of California’s most functional show cattle facilities where junior showmen can learn all aspects of the livestock industry. From daily care of cattle, to embryo transfer, our program has opportunities for all level of competitors. As we look to the future of Colburn Cattle we recognize the potential is endless and we could not be more excited for the set of animals we will be presenting at our next events. The highlight of these sales will be our Angus Heifer Sale the last week of March, our Angus Show Heifer Sale the last week of October and our Steer and Cross Bred Heifer Sale the first week of November. One of Abraham Hicks’ most famous quotes is “If you’re not excited about it, it’s not the right path.” Right now, at Colburn Cattle, with the management of the operation led by Matt Avila, we have achieved success never dreamed imaginable. We are humbled by the rewards of our work that started so long ago as a family pounding the pavement on the 99. It’s our dream that we create a path for success for more families chasing jackpots and fair titles. 9

CJLA NEWS & UPDATES Before I started to write this, I was looking back at the CJLA News from the last issue where I talked about the new shows coming up and plans for the coming months. So much to look forward to – and then WHAM! Everything has changed due to the Coronavirus hitting the country. It seemed like things were changing daily and it was almost impossible to keep up. It has been a tough blow to have our sanctioned shows cancel due to the shutdowns. At this point our last sanctioned shows were held March 14-15th. Pacific Coast and MJC Spring Classic canceled, Clash for Cash and the newly sanctioned Breeders Classic have postponed with hopes to hold their event in the fall. The cattle Field-days the end of May have cancelled and we are awaiting news on the shows after that. We will keep you updated via our website, Facebook page and by E-blast as updates are available. We also recommend that you check with each show through their media sites to get information from them immediately.

also know how much our members what to keep showing and participating with their animals. Working together, we will get it all figured out! Keep thinking positive and stay hopeful! In this issue, we have posted all 2020 members in the divisions you signed up for. PLEASE check for your name and contact us if you have questions. By the time this issue is in your hands, we should have already sent out and posted the first set of points. We send out to members by E-blast and also post on the CJLA website. If you didn’t receive the email, then head on over to the website and look up your points. PLEASE contact us ASAP if you have any questions about your points, etc. so we can review our records right away! If you have questions about points or shows or rules, please contact us so we can answer them! The CJLA Rule Book is posted on the website and we recommend everyone print a copy for your reference! We would like to remind everyone that the CJLA Rules were made with an effort for fairness to all exhibitors and members. We have always been proud of our members and the way in which our livestock youth conduct themselves in life and in competition. Each of you set an example for the younger ones coming up behind you – just as those you looked up to did when you first started out.

With all that, we did have an exciting first few months of the year highlighted by our Award Presentation Ceremony on February 15th to honor the 2019 members for their many achievements over the past year. Check out the Feature Article in this issue! We did have a few awards not picked up and some requests for the t-shirts. Please know that we did not forget about you! Our original plan was to deliver to some upcoming shows but with not being able to get out, that plan is on hold for now. Once I can get back to the office, we can do some mailing instead.

I think this is about all the news for now …… so go full speed into the weeks and months ahead! Set new goals and work hard to achieve them! Be sure to enjoy the journey along the way! Stay safe, and be sure to thank your crew that helps you get it all done. And say Thanks to those awesome people who work so hard to put on those shows you attend!

Even though the award ceremony is over, the CJLA is still looking for donations to help with the costs incurred to hold our award event and to cover the costs of the awards. We will also be holding an online auction of items to help raise money for these expenses. Please contact Heidi if you are interested in donating financially or items for the online auction. Your help is always greatly appreciated!

Happy Trails!

Getting back to talking about our sanctioned shows going forward: we have been asked about the possibility of any of our sanctioned shows hosting a virtual show if they can’t have a live event. This is currently being discussed to figure out how it could work with our point system. We will have a decision out soon regarding this and details as to how it would work if it is decided to offer this option. At this point, all species have held at least, or more than, our required 8 show minimum for points but we

Jr. Division Winner: Bella Herrera "Because of CJLA I Can..." My name is Bella Herrera and I am 12 years old. I have been showing pigs since I was six years old, and was able to join CJLA in 2017 when I was nine years old. I just completed my third year in CJLA and this year I made a goal to attend every CJLA show and I was able to do that. So, after three years of being in CJLA I can proudly say because of CJLA I can have confidence to speak to a crowd of people. I also can have memories inside and outside the showring that will last forever! In 2018, I competed at the Arizona Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona. This was my second year competing and I was named Reserve Champion Junior Swine Showman. During the final drive, the top three Junior Showmen spoke on the microphone with the judge. He asked me, “Why do you love going to shows?” and “Why as a family do you go to shows?” I was so nervous answering them but as I was talking, I thought to myself this was not that bad. The last thing the judged asked me was to thank my parents. I knew exactly what I was going to say but as soon as I saw my dad all I could say was, “Thank you for everything you do for me and I love you.” For some reason as I was finished, I thought I could have said so much more. But that moment got to me and I

Intermediate Division Winner: Mia Torigiani "Because Of CJLA I Can Be The Best Me" Because of The California Junior Livestock Association, I can be the best me. CJLA will forever have a special place in my heart as I have never been a part of anything quite like it. CJLA is a program that is like no other in the state of California. CJLA has blessed my life with so many amazing experiences that it is truly too difficult to list them all. However, the best highlights that CJLA has offered me this year are allowing me the opportunity to meet new people, being able to be competitive though the point system, the winning feeling, and the family bond that is made stronger at each show. Through the CJLA circuit, I have met many new people that I know I would never have met if I were not a part of this amazing association. Not only have I met these new people, but I have made relationships with them that will last a lifetime. I have made relationships all throughout the state of California. I would not have had the opportunity to see and compete against these friends if I had not been a member of CJLA. For instance, when I am ringside at a show, I am able to get to see my friends compete and succeed in the show ring. I have always been a shy girl; however, having the same interests as others in CJLA has helped me to have the confidence to develop new friendships. The people I have met showing livestock is one of best parts of CJLA. Although we make friendships through CJLA, we also compete against

teared up and knew what I said to my dad came from my heart. Then I realized that I just did something I never could have thought I would have ever done. I was pretty proud of myself. I should have known that I could do that, as I was preparing for this all year as I talked to judges during shows all the time. I knew that whatever question I was going to be asked I would be ready for it. I just had to think it was just me and the judge and not the entire crowd watching the show. Memories, fun, and lots of laughs. Going to livestock shows all year long has made for some very long and memorable car rides, hotel stays, and RV stays for weekend livestock shows. I have been very lucky that with all of these shows attended I have made some pretty great memories. Yes, I have memories of winning a banner, a buckle, and getting the handshake from the judge of a job well done. Those memories are great, but what I cherish is the memories of car rides going to dinner after being at a show all day and just laughing and being silly with my livestock friends and family. Or getting ready for a show in the morning and having my friend Jess doing my hair for the show. I know when I ask her that she will do it for me, as we are more than just friends, we are family! Because of CJLA I can say that I am following my passion and doing what I love to do, and that is showing and raising livestock. I am excited about what 2020 brings and I have made goals and am hoping I can achieve them. I also know that I have my family and livestock family there with me regardless of the outcome. This industry has some amazing people and I am fortunate that I have surrounded myself with them. Not only am I looking forward to this year but every year that I am able to do what I love!! Junior Division 2nd Place Winner: Courtney Fernandes

each other. We each want to win and get the most points we can at each show. I feel that one of the greatest things about CJLA is the points at each show. After a show, I am always trying to figure out the amount of points that I earned and how many points I will need for the next show, in order to stay ahead. I mean, what is a pig show without some competition, right? It is always fun going into a show, knowing that you need a certain amount of points to catch up to the top person, and if you earn these points, you are now the top person. The intriguing thing about the point system is that it helps your mentality; such as, you are determined to win showmanship points for your division at the end of the year. At a show, you are just mentally checked in and determined to win your showmanship division. The point system of CJLA helps me to become a more competitive person. Hands down, winning a livestock show is the most amazing feeling in the world. The winning feeling you get from a livestock show is indescribable. There is so much time, dedication, and flat-out hard work that goes into the preparation for a show. I have played club volleyball and played against very competitive teams. I promise that it is nothing compared to the winning of a show. I have been told many times, you win some and you lose some. In showing livestock, you find that out very easily. I also have been told how you deal with your losses helps to define the person you are. I remember going to a show and not winning a single thing. As disappointed as I was, I didn’t give up. I got in our barn and worked hard until the next show. And guess what, I won the next show, and it was Western Bonanza! Making the decision to hit the snooze button in the morning or get up out of bed defines the showman you are and leads you to the winning feeling. CJLA has shown me how to deal with losses and how to create a true grit in you to win. You learn that livestock shows, much like real life, have ups and downs. This is not only a pig-showing lesson, but a life lesson I can keep with me forever.

Helping you navigate through the lessons learned while showing livestock is your family. There is no other sport with such a family presence. Not only is my family there supporting me, but also the mentors I have because of CJLA. They have become my honorary uncles and aunts. Their support is invaluable to me. Having my family as my teammates is pretty awesome. The journeys my family takes to show my animals through the CJLA circuit is what we call vacation. Most people wouldn’t consider packing their trailer, working their animal, waking up at very early hours of the morning and going to bed at very

Sr. Division Winner: Tiffany Vannoy "CJLA Paved My Future" The sound of an alarm clock, the aching pain to get up at the crack of dawn, the morning excitement on a show day, and the joy of seeing your animals as the first thing in your morning. The good, the bad, and the ugly, it is all worth it and I can proudly say that the California Junior Livestock Association has had an impact on my life and my future career. The distinct smell of a show barn forces a slight smile on my face and it is all due to the memorable experiences I have had the opportunity to face over the last several years. You can smell the newly batted down shavings, hear the sound of clippers and blowers being fired up, remember the hours spent in wash racks, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I started showing livestock during my freshman year of high school. Unlike many showmen who had the opportunity to show growing up from a young age, I was not exposed to the livestock industry until I entered the agriculture department in my first year of high school. Truthfully, I was unsure about what exactly I had signed up for until my ag teacher explained to me what FFA was and asked if I wanted to show an animal. Despite being slightly intimidated at first, without hesitation, I had decided to jump right in. I had no clue that accidentally signing up for a class would change the course of my life. My parents did not grow up around livestock or agriculture but instead decided to pursue careers in law enforcement and computer technology. My sparked interest in animals did not stop my parents from whole-heartedly supporting my dreams. I primarily started by showing goats, both market wethers and breeding does, although I also had the opportunity to show a sheep and a steer. Although I funded all of my own projects and often would attend shows without my parents, they could see the passion in my eyes and only wanted the best for me. With success at my county fair level, I decided to go further and I was introduced to CJLA. I found a family within other members and supporters of the California Junior Livestock Association. I continue to learn and grow about showing and have since earned the opportunity to help younger showmen. From time to time, I carry a bit of jealousy when I see families who had the privilege of growing up around livestock, but I have no doubt that there are people like me who are searching for the same opportunities. Occasionally feeling intimidated that I did not come from a traditional agricultural background, CJLA and showing livestock has shown me that I do hold a place in this industry and it has opened a window of future career opportunities. I often ponder where I would be if I had

late hours of the night a vacation. But you know what, me and my family do. We wouldn’t have it any other way. To me, meeting new people from all over the state, the point system that has kept the competitive fire in me lit, experiencing the winning feeling and creating a stronger family bond is why CJLA shapes me to be my best self. I’m so thankful I’ve gotten to experience CJLA. You learn from your mistakes and work hard to make each day showing livestock an experience that will be with you forever. I have grown and learned so much about myself from being a member of CJLA. Inter. Division 2nd Place Winner: Jaycee Petersen

started out showing with the knowledge that I know now. Fully understanding that there is no such invention as a time machine to take me back in time, I can only look towards the future with hope in growing and expanding my knowledge in the agriculture industry. Being a member of CJLA has continued to fuel my passion for livestock. I may be finishing up my final year showing livestock, but my place in the agricultural industry does not end here. I have been accepted to West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, where I am currently studying Agribusiness Management and have a double major in Agricultural Education and Extension. Through these programs, I intend to further my career in extending agriculture throughout the community. I enjoyed taking the Principles of Animal Science class that was offered at my school. In the class, we covered topics such as animal nutrition, genetics, physiology, breeding characteristics, and more, most of which I was first able to gain insight on by showing livestock at CJLA sanctioned shows. Agricultural education in the classroom and the hands-on experience provided by the California Junior Livestock Association have allowed me to open my eyes to a new aspect of our community and I can truly appreciate the value of an organization such as this one. CJLA has given me the opportunity and inclination to continue my education in agriculture. This has demonstrated to me that with the support of a community, backed by a structured organization, the potential to educate the community surrounding topics that are important to us, such as livestock, is possible. Through CJLA sanctioned shows, I also had the opportunity to network and meet industry professionals throughout the state. CJLA allowed for building connections and catered to supporting youth in agriculture. Being able to learn from others is a crucial quality that I believe CJLA helps foster. I have learned the value of observational learning, then applying practices by doing. Without the support of the California Junior Livestock Association, I would not have been able to meet so many people who were able to support me and my projects. In turn, I hope that through this organization, I will be able to do the same for the younger generation in the future. I will never forget the butterfly feeling that wells in my stomach before entering the ring no matter how many times I had done it in the past, or the times that I had anxiously awaited the results of the champion drive. Some days you may find yourself in the drive with the satisfaction of a winning handshake and some days you may have fallen at the back end of a class. Regardless, the memories I have made at livestock shows and through making connections will carry with me for the rest of my life. I can only hope that I am able to pass on similar experiences to the next generation of showmen and many more to follow. Not only did the California Junior Livestock Association have an impact on the path of my career, but CJLA also played a vital role in paving the way for my future and career. NILE Offers Internship Experience; Application Deadline July 31st

The NILE is offering the experience of a lifetime Oct. 8-18!

have brains and brawn-handle high pressure critical thinking and not be afraid to pick up a pitch fork, can you handle this?

The Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) is searching for college students who are willing and able to work all day and into the night, eat and sleep minimally, handle high pressure situations, work in the extreme weather conditions of October in Montana, and enjoy every minute of it!

We get it, the NILE is during the school months and it's hard to get away, but believe us, it's worth it for the experience! Yes, the NILE is months away, but it's not too soon to start thinking about your future. Many of the NILE's past interns are gainfully employed and attribute some of their success to the NILE internship experience. Apply today (while you have a little extra "unexpected free-time) and set yourself up for success!

From the bright lights of the rodeo arena, to the heart pounding hooves of the horse events and finally to the smells of adhesives in the cattle barn, you won't want to miss out on the action! The internship is ten days of early mornings and late nights. Some interns work the livestock show ring; checking in exhibitors, lining up steers, shuffling sheep, and recording results. Other interns set up horse awards, buck bales, and score keep the ranch rodeo. All interns laugh, goof around, and accomplish tasks. The work details are to be determined, but we guarantee they'll be valuable!

A new addition in 2020, is changing the Media internship from a 10day option to a semester long opportunity. This will allow the student chosen the opportunity to get an in depth knowledge of the inner workings of the Media side of the NILE Stock Show and Rodeo and receive full college credit for their efforts. Want more information on how to apply? Go to www.thenile.org for all the answers! All applications must be in the NILE Office by July 31, 2020 and interns will be announced shortly thereafter.

So, are you one of those college kids who are little obsessed, a little quirky, and has a lot of heart? Do you eat, breathe, and sleep stock shows and rodeos? How are you at functioning on minimal sleep and maximum caffeine or sugar? This is a job for those college kids who MAY/JUNE 2020

It is because of your character that we are able to work together and create a solution to allow our students the find closure for the year.” Go FFA!
