FROM THE
EDITOR
The News has been full of devastating natural events lately! Hurricanes and flooding in the south, and out here in the West, fires have taken their toll! Homes, lives, businesses, and entire communities have been destroyed in the wake of Mother Nature. The full extent of the destruction is sometimes hard to imagine when you see it from the safety of your television or computer screen. For those who were in the midst of the “storms,” the sheer terror, uncertainty and emotions had to be almost unbearable. While national news was full of reports on the hurricanes, fires were raging across Montana. Then fires broke out throughout California – especially in the north part of the state.

I have to say that, in these instances, social media spread the word for all to see. The livestock community posted over and over about the fires in Montana. I was able to find out more about their situation than I saw on television news. California news channels did report on the fires in our state, but it was through social media that I could read firsthand accounts of people running from the fire, or view the hundreds of destroyed homes and the city of Santa Rosa, and what was going on with livestock in the area.

In all tragedies, it is heartwarming to see people pulling together to overcome. People doing what has to be done, no matter what. Survival and caring for others is in all of us, and those actions bring hope to any situation, as well as to the future. With strong human spirit, things will be rebuilt, people will be helped, and from the ashes, new beginnings will come.

In areas where fire has destroyed so much forest and grazing areas, the livestock community always bands together to help each other out. We saw it when the fires raced through Kansas last year, and now we are seeing it in our western states. Trucks of hay and feed and supplies arrive from all over to care for animals without feed or shelter. FFA chapters and 4-H clubs round up items for their fellow members who have lost so much. The agriculture community network is there for whoever needs it, in good times and in times of need. I am thankful to be a part of this community!

Fall is a time to be thankful for family and friends and so many things. It is also the time of year to start hunting new project animals. It is exciting to search for the “special one” that will live up to your dreams and help you reach those goals you have set for yourself. There are many sales to attend, and lots of breeders selling private treaty. Do your research early. Make phone calls and do ranch visits to view animals for sale. Don’t wait till the last minute or you may miss out on the one you wanted!
Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.
Time to Plan Ahead!
There are lots of fall activities going on too – and one of them is the National FFA Convention. Held a few weeks ago in October, they say this one set new records for attendance. In this issue, check out how the teams and members from the western states did in the many contests and proficiencies.

huge repair garage. In the spring of 1946, the first Junior Grand National was held and the Grand National was held in the fall. After a massive rainstorm flattened the livestock tents, the lower stormproof barns were built. The Cow Palace isn’t just for cows. The well-built building can house up to 16,500 for a concert and holds a myriad of different entertainments, from sports events to conventions. In 2008, the Cow Palace almost ceased to be. Like so many agricultural lands, it almost gave way to development. Some government officials thought that a supermarket, a bank and more housing would be a better use for the 68 acres of land. A grassroots movement saved the Cow Palace. I first showed at Cow Palace in the spring of 1969 with a Polled Hereford steer out of a cow my grandmother gave me. He was pretty good-looking. Girls were in the process of being admitted to FFA membership. Hard to believe, but up to that point it was an all-male organization. The decision was not sitting too well with some of the establishment state FFA advisors and one took it upon himself to harass me in the show ring over my lack of an FFA sweetheart jacket. Showmanship was not an open class; you had to receive the designation of “Expert Showman” in your respective classes before you could enter a showmanship ring. The state advisor hissed at me before he walked toward the clerk’s table, “You’re not going back into showmanship.” I had read the rules and was fully in compliance with the dress code as it pertained to FFA girls. I was not one for confrontation, but I did this time. I qualified and placed second to a member of the DeRose family of Hanford. My husband’s family owned the Running M Ranch of Lemoore, and Cow Palace was always the place to be in November. The barns that now house the entire livestock show were dedicated to beef and dairy cattle. Sheep and hogs were in the other large barn by the edge of the stockyards. It was a fivenight stay and we slept in a motel and ate out every meal; one of those was always the Grotto Restaurant along Fisherman’s Wharf. We took nearly a full show string, twenty head or more. The family expected to make expenses with premium monies and by selling some bulls. Cattle were shown in the upper arena where the rodeo is held. We walked the cattle up the ramps and hoped that they didn’t pass us up on the way down. Often it was raining and we fitted in the lower barns. Ah, the good old days. Because livestock were there for close to an entire week, throngs of schoolchildren toured the barns and stockyards. The rodeo was held for several nights and for many years was the last qualifying rodeo before the National Finals. It drew the best riders and ropers in the nation, those hoping to maintain standing, and those that were on the edge of qualifying. Championship horse show events were held between rodeo events. Jumps were set up and brought down in a dizzying display of efficiency by the Cow Palace crew. Our children showed at Junior Cow Palace in the spring. Sheep
KATHLEEN'S
KORNER November Date with a Grand Old Lady By Kathleen Wood Vieira From the earliest years of the 20tth century, livestock shows have been a big deal. Rural Americans traveled to the big cities to see the latest and greatest in “modern” genetics. After the well-attended and acclaimed stock show held at the 1915 Pan-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco decided it was time to join big cities like Fort Worth, Denver, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles and build a venue to host its own livestock show. But it would take a little over twenty-five years for the “Palace for Cows” to be built. It was not without controversy at the start of the project, and close to fifty years later another storm began brewing that almost saw the demise of the historical Cow Palace building and the livestock show forever. Rewind to 1925 and the formation of the San Francisco Exposition Company. Its purpose was to finance the project. The land they purchased was never developed, as in 1929, the country was plunged into the Great Depression. Banks failed; people lost homes, farms, businesses, and jobs were unavailable. In 1931, legislation was passed to provide $250,000 of public funds to purchase a suitable site for a livestock facility, and that decision kicked the hornet nest. In 1935 a local newspaper posed the question, “Why, when people are starving, should money be spent on a ‘palace for cows’?” The headlines read “A Palace for Cows?” And the much-loved venue that generations of ranchers and showmen have come to look forward to each year was appropriately named. The Cow Palace was built by an army of WPA workmen. Established by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the WPA (Works Progress Administration) built bridges, buildings and other public structures and put many people back to work, providing them with a steady paycheck and affording them the dignity of providing for their families. This army of dedicated workmen completed the Cow Palace structure. It was a massive concrete and steel hip shaped roof that covered nearly six acres. In November of 1941, the first Grand National Livestock Expo, Horse show and Rodeo was held, but two short weeks later, Pearl Harbor was attacked and the United State was at war. Four years of livestock shows were put on hold and the building was used for U.S. troops heading to war, then eventually used as a NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

CJLA
NEWS & UPDATES!
The points posted in this issue are for all shows UP TO Cow Palace! We received the show results from Cow Palace just prior to going to print and did not have enough time to process them. We plan to do a point update the end of November and will eblast that out to the CJLA member list and also post on the CJLA website. We will then have one more update at the end of the year when all shows have been completed.
Banquet! The CJLA relies completely on our generous sponsors to help us reach our goals of recognizing the achievements of our members. Each year we ask for your help to spread the word about CJLA and what it means to you, and to bring in new supporters. We have a Sponsor Packet available – or give Heidi a call and she will contact the people or businesses you tell her about.
If you have questions about your point totals, please contact us so we can go over our records! Our point tabulator asks that you provide a record of the shows you went to and your placings so she has a reference point to start researching the show results.
We are also looking for some great items for both our live and silent auctions we have every year during the Banquet. So if you have something, or have an idea – don’t wait! Let us know! CJLA MEMBERS – We will be sending out End-of –Year information – please watch your email boxes and your mailboxes for communications from CJLA. These are things you will need to respond to! And don’t forget – we have some contests to go along with the Banquet! More information on those will be emailed to you asap!
**CJLA UPDATE FOR 2018! CJLA will be adding a Wether Dam Ewe Division next year! We had great response to adding the Wether Dam Doe Division in 2017 and we have had many requests to add the Wether Dam Ewe Division. We were able to get more than the required 8 Shows to confirm that they will add it to their event, so here it is! More information and rules will be included in the 2018 Rule Book, posted on the website, and eblasted out to everyone. Please note that if you want to join the Wether Dam Doe Division and/or the Wether Dam Ewe Division, you must pay the additional fee for those divisions as they are separate from the Mkt. Goat or Mkt. Lamb Divisions. Questions? Contact us!
We have had many inquiries about how we get information out to everyone. We mainly send out E-Blasts with news, information, and point updates. We also post everything on the CJLA website and in each issue of this magazine. Due to the cost of postage, we only mail paperwork for year-end stuff unless there is a special instance where we need to get paper copies to all members. PLEASE be sure to read your E-Blasts – if you are not getting any – let us know so we can double-check your email addresses!
Be sure to watch your e-blasts and check out the website for News for 2018! And in the next issue we will have the comprehensive list of all 2018 shows and events so you will definitely what to see that! Some new shows coming on board, and some updates to the CJLA format!

Dear Friend of the CJLA, The California Junior Livestock Association began in 2000 with a dream, an idea, and a whole lot of belief in our livestock youth. With more than 325 members annually, and 30-plus sanctioned shows, the CJLA has grown into California’s premier junior livestock organization. From beginning level to the most advanced presentation, CJLA strives to offer positive experiences for everyone. It has provided a venue for our young members to showcase their passions and commitment to excellence in the show ring, in school, and in their daily lives. Our members love what they do. They love to raise and show livestock. From selecting a certain animal, setting goals, and working hard, to competing in show rings up and down the state, CJLA kids are up to the challenge. But its’ more than time in the ring, it is time with family, making friends, and building memories that will last a lifetime. The California Junior Livestock Association has become the cornerstone of the junior livestock scene in our state. Our focus is on providing members with opportunities for recognition as they set and attain new goals, expand their animal husbandry skills and industry knowledge, and compete with their cattle, sheep, hogs, and goats in competitive events. Every member is honored at the annual award banquet, and the top exhibitors in each division are awarded prizes for their achievements. In addition to earning awards for exhibiting their animal projects, members can also enter other CJLA contests. The CJLA Essay Contest, Memorial Scholarship, and the Fitting Skills Video Contest appeal to our youngest to oldest members. The CJLA continually strives to offer something for all our members, and we are excited for the new events planned for this year, and into the future! Our upcoming banquet, recognizing the achievements of our 2017 members, will be held February 17, 2018, at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, California. Cal Poly’s Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show will also be taking place this weekend at the fairgrounds, and many of our members and their families will be attending both events. In order to reach our goal of providing special awards to all our members, the CJLA relies completely on the generosity of those who share our belief in the future of our youth and the future of agriculture. CJLA members are the leaders and bright stars of tomorrow who use the skills they learn today in their future endeavors. Your sponsorship will help the CJLA give awards that can be used in our members’ future projects, education, and careers. Large or small, all contributions go directly back to our members and help to ensure the success of our award program. As you plan where your support dollars will go in the upcoming year, we ask that you consider the California Junior Livestock Association on that list. You can help us keep our vision alive through your support. Please read through the enclosed sponsor information. Several levels of support are offered and you can choose where you want your donation applied. To make a contribution to CJLA, please fill out and return the enclosed form or you may go to the CJLA website – www.cjlainfo.com and use our PayPal service. If you have any questions at all, please contact me directly at (408) 888-2503. The CJLA truly values your support, but more importantly, our junior members and their families appreciate it! We promise to put your contribution to good use. Thank you for your consideration of our request. Sincerely,
Heidi Beljean
