FROM THE
EDITOR Crazy times surround us! As I write my editorial, the news on the TV is all about the hurricane barreling down on Texas with predictions of lots of rain hanging over the south for at least three days. Then our local news comes on and we are told to expect another heat wave! If I took a cross-country road trip this time of year I would probably experience every type of weather possible!
P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net
If there’s one thing I have learned over my lifetime of being a country girl, it's that people involved with farming or ranching deal with Mother Nature on a daily basis. We're always trying to keep our animals comfortable and safe, and our land in the best shape so it is productive and good for us, our animals, the environment, and the consumer. No matter what those Animal Activists think or say, we love our animals and land. In fact, I know you would all agree, our show animals are more pampered than we are!
Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com
As we roll into September, the Fall season has arrived. This is when parents and kids start trying to plan out their next year. Between school activities, meetings, lessons, practices, and whatever else can be jammed into the daily schedule, it can get crazy! But it is also an exciting time because this is when you start planning what animals you are going to show and where you are going to make those selections and purchases. I always enjoyed this time of year because I could go from breeder to breeder or to different sales and see what was out there – the thrill was in the search, then making a choice, and then getting “my” new project home! I have talked about this before – this is the time for you to make your plans, set your goals, dream the big dreams, and then work to make them a reality. The best part of a project is the journey, and success in whatever form comes from your efforts from day one. So dream big, work hard, and have fun – it's all worth it!

This issue starts the 2018 membership drive for the CJLA. Check out the application in this issue. If you want to join, you can mail in the application and payment. Or you can go to the CJLA website and enroll online using the PayPal feature. Starting a new year also means the current year is winding down to the end. If you have been going to the jackpots throughout the year, hopefully you have learned a lot, added new friends to your group, and have done better than the year before. CJLA is so fortunate to have the support of so many people, families, and businesses so that we can honor and recognize our members at the annual award banquet. However, we always need more help! If you are interested, or know someone who is, please let me know so I can get out more information or help decide where support is most needed. We will be sending out sponsorship forms soon, so when yours arrives in the mail, take a few minutes to read through it, give me a call, or share it with others! It takes a village, but the cause is so worth it!

ABOUT THE
COVER
In January of 2014, Rival Feeds was established with one goal in mind: to provide a simplistic high quality nutritional program for show cattle that would provide unlimited assistance to helping our customers be successful at any desired level. We felt a user friendly program that provided options nutritionally to fit different body types and stages without needing additional additives would help deliver a more successful experience to our feeders. Through the three available rations — Base, Beast and Bold — we have been very pleased to see the program work so successfully for our loyal customers. This year marks our 4th year and we are proud to say that for the fourth consecutive year we fed the Supreme Champion Steer at the California State Fair, as well as the Supreme and Reserve Female. In addition, our customers turned in a record number of wins through the County Fair and Jackpot season. There is nothing more enjoyable for us than to see our customers experience success and create lifelong MEMORIES! We thank all of our customers who have loyally fed our program, and are grateful to have you as part of the team. We welcome anyone who would like to be part and would gladly spend time with you to help educate you on our program to help create as many #unRivaledmemories as possible. 15

NEWS & UPDATES!
Points are posted for all shows held so far this year. Be sure to check out your totals and see where you are in the standings. If you have questions about your point totals, please contact us so we can go over our records! Our point tabulator asks that you provide a record of the shows you went to and your placings so she has a reference point to start researching the show results. It is much easier for her to look up the information when you can tell her you went to show A, B, and C, and she doesn’t have to also look through 10 other show reports to see if you exhibited there.
you must pay the additional fee for those divisions as they are separate from the Mkt. Goat or Mkt. Lamb Divisions. Questions? Contact us! Be sure to watch your e-blasts and check out the website for News for 2018! And in the next issue we will have the comprehensive list of all 2018 shows and events so you will definitely what to see that! Some new shows coming on board, and some updates to the CJLA format! **Banquet News! This time of year is when we start thinking about our Annual Award Banquet! The CJLA relies completely on our generous sponsors to help us reach our goals of recognizing the achievements of our members. Each year we ask for your help to spread the word about CJLA and what it means to you, and to bring in new supporters. We will have available new Sponsor Letters soon or you can contact Heidi with names of people you want her to contact.
When you are figuring your points – don’t forget we count two animals per show (per division), AND remember that your top eight shows count for year-end totals but the tie breakers for both division and showmanship are the number of shows you earned points at in that division. It often happens at the end of the year that placings change based on this tie-breaker rule! So keep on trucking and keep on showing! Summer went by fast and school has started up again! There are several sanctioned shows scheduled in the coming months for all species so you still have the chance to improve your scores and move up in the ranks. Year-end standings can change a lot for those who compete until the end – so if your goal is Top Ten, remember those tie-breakers I just mentioned!
We are also looking for some great items for both our live and silent auctions we have every year during the Banquet. So if you have something, or have an idea – don’t wait! Let us know! We have had many inquiries about how we get information out to everyone. We mainly send out E-Blasts with news, information, and point updates. We also post everything on the CJLA website and in each issue of this magazine. Due to the cost of postage, we only mail paperwork for year-end stuff unless there is a special instance where we need to get paper copies to all members. PLEASE be sure to read your E-Blasts – if you are not getting any – let us know so we can double-check your email addresses!
And if you have questions about how the points are awarded, please contact us! We are here to help! **CJLA UPDATE FOR 2018! CJLA will be adding a Wether Dam Ewe Division next year! We had great response to adding the Wether Dam Doe Division in 2017 and we have had many requests to add the Wether Dam Ewe Division. We were able to get more than the required 8 Shows to confirm that they will add it to their event, so here it is! More information and rules will be included in the 2018 Rule Book, posted on the website, and eblasted out to everyone. Please note that if you want to join the Wether Dam Doe Division and/or the Wether Dam Ewe Division,

SHIC Funds Near Real-Time Global Swine Disease Monitoring System Ames, Iowa – The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) has funded a near real-time monitoring system for swine diseases around the world. Reviewed by SHIC’s Monitoring and Analysis Working Group, the system will include identification of potential hazards due to new diseases or changes in current diseases’ status, screening steps to evaluate the information collected, and informing the U.S. pork industry through regular, timely reporting.
or unofficial (rumors or data that may or may not have been corroborated) and hard or official (confirmed by national or international agencies). On a regular basis, data will be evaluated by a group of swine health experts, including collaboration with the USDA/APHIS Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health, and a report generated. The summary will include interpretation from the experts that add their impression about the event; does it sound accurate, should I care about this, why or why not. Followups with local contacts will also be done, when possible. The information will be graded to reflect a consensus of risk to the U.S. pork industry and the report will be released. The system is expected to be operational early in 2018.
This project, being developed at the University of Minnesota, will use a private-public-academic partnership to develop the system. The University of Minnesota and USDA/APHIS Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health will be collaborating on the project. The U.S. swine industry is free of several swine diseases existing in other countries while having other diseases in common. “Having a systematic way to monitor new or emerging diseases around the globe will help keep the U.S. pork industry informed of risks. Knowing the changes in risks will spur thinking about how to mitigate them,” remarked Dr. Paul Sundberg, SHIC Executive Director.
Funded by America’s pork producers to protect and enhance the health of the US swine herd, the Swine Health Information Center focuses its efforts on prevention, preparedness, and response. As a conduit of information and research, SHIC encourages sharing of its publications and research for the benefit of swine health. Forward, reprint, and quote SHIC material freely. For more information, visit http://www.swinehealth.org or contact Dr. Paul Sundberg at psundberg@swinehealth.org.
Multiple sources of information may contribute to the development of a near real-time global monitoring system for swine diseases. Sources of information may be classified as soft

National Junior Angus Board Elects New Officers
Angus juniors elected to lead the National Junior Angus Association.
pharmaceuticals salesman in the future.
Throughout the barns, the prestige of the green jackets is widely recognized. National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) members serve as mentors, friends and the next generation of leaders for the Angus breed. During the 2017 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), hosted July 9-15 in Des Moines, Iowa, six new junior leaders were elected by their peers to serve on the NJAB.
DeHaan purchased her first Angus female seven years ago. She hopes to live up to everything the green coat symbolizes by exemplifying dedication, passion and inspiration during her two years on the board. Entering her sophomore year at Purdue University, she is majoring in agricultural sales and marketing, and plans on adding agricultural communications as a dual degree.
“Serving on the National Junior Angus Association Board of Directors is something I have dreamed about my whole life,” says Jera Pipkin, Republic, Mo., newly elected NJAB director.
Fitzgerald says the NJAA is unique because it offers so many events for its juniors. Currently, he is an Oklahoma State Cowboy studying agribusiness with a minor in marketing. He wants to pursue a career in foreign trade, particularly focusing on agricultural commodities.
Joining Pipkin on the 2017-2018 NJAB are: Dawson Dal Porto, Oakley, Calif.; Hayley DeHaan, McMinnville, Ore.; Brody Fitzgerald, West Grove, Pa.; Sydnee Gerken, Cashion, Okla.; and Madison Sundsbak, Des Lacs, N.D.
Gerken believes what sets the NJAA apart is the family environment between its members. Currently, she is on the livestock judging team at Butler Community College and is pursuing a degree in animal science with hopes of being a feedlot nutritionist.
Board members serve a two-year term and travel across the country to various events, promoting the Angus breed and helping young people succeed in the industry’s premier junior organization. Their first official activity is the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference in Raleigh, N.C., Aug. 3-6.
Pipkin is pursuing a degree in agricultural communications and animal science with a minor in agricultural business from Oklahoma State University. Since her family started in the Angus business in 1933, Pipkin has Angus cattle in her blood. She’s a fifth-generation Angus breeder and hopes to one day manage their family Angus operation, as well as have her own agricultural marketing firm.
“This opportunity will allow me to show others how Angus can change your life, just like it did mine,” Pipkin says. “I wouldn’t be the person I am without the NJAA, and this is only a small step in what I owe to give back this association. I am extremely blessed, humbled and honored for this opportunity to serve.”
Sundsbak says being elected to the NJAB is a dream come true. She is the current North Dakota Angus Queen and the North Dakota Junior Angus Association’s president. As a student at South Dakota State University, she is studying agricultural education with a minor in agriculture business and a certificate in agricultural and environmental law. She hopes to make a difference in student’s lives by pursuing a degree in teaching.
In addition to the new board members being elected, members serving for their second year on the NJAB were elected to officer positions. Named as chairman was Madison Butler, Vincennes, Ind.; vicechairman, Will Pohlman, Prairie Grove, Ark.; membership director, Michaela Clowser, Milford, Neb.; communications director, Catie Hope, Berryville, Va.; Foundation director, Corbin Cowles, Rockfield, Ky.; and leadership director, Jordyn Wagner, Billings, Mont.
As the new six join the board, the old six also say goodbye to the NJAA and will retire in August at the LEAD conference. Those who ended their terms on the board are: Macy Perry, Prather, Calif.; Reese Tuckwiller, Lewisburg, W.Va.; Gabrielle Lemenager, Clifton, Ill.; Braden Henricks, Anadarko, Okla.; Tim Mardesen, Oxford, Iowa; and Katelyn Corsentino, Denham Springs, La.
Get-to-know the New NJAB
The 2017 NJAS in Des Moines, Iowa, was a record breaker for the Angus breed. More than 1,260 head of Angus cattle were shown — the largest number since the last record was set 10 years ago.
Dal Porto says the NJAA sets itself apart because of the passion its members share for the Angus industry. Starting his sophomore year at Hutchinson Community College, where he is studying agricultural communications and is a member of the livestock judging team, Dal Porto plans to become an agricultural

AgConnect® technology showcases potential to protect US cattle industry In the spring of 2010, John Wenzel, DVM, New Mexico State University Extension Veterinarian, observed an increasing number of bred cows aborting their calves. By the fall of 2011, that number spiked even more. Using early technology that was later developed into the mHealth mobile application, a component of the AgConnect® system, Wenzel was able to better track and analyze his clinical visit data. Surprisingly to him, he found colleagues noting high abortion rates in other rural areas of New Mexico and was able to find two diseases as the common thread.
insight into herd health, increasing the safety and stability of our nation’s food animal industry along with the confidence of consumers and trade partners.” In addition to outbreak response tools, AgConnect® mHealth uses the EPS concept to improve understanding of “normal” versus “abnormal” health events in the food animal industry by allowing practitioners to record health and production-level data on healthy and sick animals in the field through mobile apps customized for different commodities. The collected data is aggregated and integrated into an easy-to-use display where, when combined with veterinary diagnostic test results, epidemiologists can compile and analyze data in real time in order to monitor animal health status more effectively.
“Because of these results, over the course of a couple years, we really changed how we look at herd health and preventative vaccinations,” Wenzel said. “This gave us the opportunity to visualize and learn from the data that we had a problem that, on an individual basis, I don’t think we would’ve recognized.”
“By organizing individually reported information about animal health on a state and regional level, the EPS system can assist individual veterinarians, industry and federal and state animal health officials in identifying emerging trends,” said Michelle Colby, DVM, M.S., program manager in the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology (DHS S&T) Directorate, who provided funding for this project from DHS S&T’s Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency. “The earlier an outbreak is detected and managed, the lower the likelihood it will require federal assistance as part of the response.”
Melissa Berquist, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases (IIAD), said that both the AgConnect® mHealth technology and concept of Enhanced Passive Surveillance (EPS) have been created to do just that – enable veterinarians to make better decisions through increased situational awareness. Earlier this week, Institute held the AgConnect® Enhanced Passive Surveillance Exercise to evaluate the potential impact of the system and concept. The Exercise, held on August 22 and 23 at the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service Emergency Operations Training Center, utilized a notional, high-consequence disease outbreak in the cattle industry that affected cow/calf producers in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. Participants – who ranged from state veterinarians and livestock industry representatives to U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) staff members – used the AgConnect® system to collaborate and leverage their collective resources just as they would during a real-life disease scenario.
With approximately 400,000 head of cattle in transit to the next location in the production system at any given time, early detection on the local level is critical. “Without AgConnect® mHealth you could have a lot of incidents occur and never be tied together,” Wenzel said. “The opportunity to share your data with someone else and get another opinion is huge – from a practitioner standpoint, it makes you feel like you’re not on an island.” The Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases (IIAD) focuses on research, education and outreach to prevent, detect, mitigate and recover from transboundary, emerging and/or zoonotic diseases, which may be introduced intentionally or through natural processes. IIAD is a member of the Texas A&M University System, a World Organisation for Animal Health Collaborating Centre in the specialty of biological threat reduction and a Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Emeritus Center of Excellence. For more information about the Institute, visit iiad.tamu.edu.
“AgConnect® mHealth mobile applications and the EPS concept hold tremendous potential for widespread use across and impact upon food animal industries,” said Berquist. “Ultimately, a system of this nature can facilitate better decisions through the recognition and characterization of animal health anomalies, and mitigate the impacts of disease on animal agriculture. Use of mobile technology to bring field and laboratory data together in real-time allows veterinarians better
Angus Hires Digital Content Manager
Katy Holdener to manage digital content for the American Angus Association and its entities The American Angus Association announces Katy Holdener, a native of Tracy, Calif., as the organization’s Digital Content Manager. Holdener began her new role August 14.
“It is truly an honor to join the American Angus Association’s knowledgeable and experienced communications team,” says Holdener. “I look forward to building relationships with the Association’s membership while cultivating relevant and insightful digital content.”
As the Digital Content Manager, Holdener is responsible for executing communication and branding strategies for all digital content, both external and internal, for the Association and its entities, Angus Productions Inc. (API), Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) and the Angus Foundation.
Holdener will also contribute to Associations multimedia reporting efforts, including writing, photography, videography for The Angus Report, I Am Angus and Angus Journal.
“Katy is a talented and bright individual with a keen eye for producing quality content, as well as understanding the importance of building a strong, digital brand which speaks to a variety of audiences,” says Clint Mefford, Director of Communications. “Katy will play a key role in streamlining online processes and enhancing user experience for members in the digital realm.”
Prior to joining the Angus team, Holdener served as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the American Hereford Association in Kansas City, Mo., and was vital in the revitalization of their digital and online presence. “Coming from a cattle background, I have always held the American Angus Association in high regard,” says Holdener. “I am excited to represent the members of the largest breed association in the world across various digital platforms.”
In her new position, Holdener will coordinate digital stories for the angus.org website, while reviewing and creating monthly analytic reports to determine audience engagement. She will also serve an integral role in overall communications planning and scheduling to meet the needs of Association members, commercial partners and other audiences.
