FROM THE

EDITOR I can hardly believe it is Fall already! It seems that my days and weeks have been much more hectic than usual and that I have had to do a lot of catching up to get projects completed. Sometimes it is hard to prioritize and stay focused on a task when so many different demands are coming your way and they all want your time! A good motto would be to “take one step at a time, and breathe”!

P.O. Box 41430 • San Jose, CA 95160 (408) 888-2503 • Fax (408) 776-9811 Publisher & Managing Editor: Heidi Beljean — (408) 888-2503 Email: pacshow@earthlink.net

Fall signals the end of some activities or projects and the beginnings of new project and a new school year, too! With each new school year, or each new project you purchase, remember to take what you did or learned previously, keep working hard, and learning more, until you reach a new level of achievement! Maybe you are thinking, “ I got straight A’s in school,” or “I won my county fair.” Well then, congratulations are certainly in order! But my question to you is “how are you going to do that again,” or “how are you going to better yourself?” On the other side of the coin, if you didn’t get the grades you wanted, or didn’t win the prize you had hoped for, how are you going to get to the next level?

Production Manager & Art Director: William Crump — (662) 305-5434 Email: pacificshowcase@gmail.com Instagram and Facebook Management: Kaela Cooper – kaelacooper@aol.com Representatives: Kaela Cooper Tiffany Carter

Getting to where you want to be is a big question. I talk often of setting goals. A goal is the endpoint of what you want. To get started on achieving a goal, you need a game plan, a program of steps that build one on top of the other that will give you the skills or knowledge and the capability to realize your goal.

Pacific Showcase limits its liability resulting from any and all errors, misprints and/or other inaccuracies in the advertisements and editorial content. The opinions or views expressed in all editorials are those only of the writer or persons interviewed and not the Pacific Showcase.

The big thing in school, or showing, or being active in your club/ chapter, is to keep your mind open to learning. You are never too old or too good to learn something new. I have seen many people who rested on their achievement and thought they were from then on entitled to win or be considered the best. But guess what happened? There was somebody else waiting in the wings who was working their tail off at home, who was doing their homework, who was talking to experts in their field, and who was applying what they learned to what they were doing, and when show day came along, they entered the ring with confidence and power, and came out of that ring on top. And Joe Know It All was left standing.

Articles of interest, show results, sale results, and calendar dates are welcome and will be printed on space available. To have articles or pictures returned, include a stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Send all submissions to address above. Pacific Showcase is published bimonthly. It is mailed first class and third class bulk mail at Morgan Hill, California. Postmaster: send address changes to Pacific Showcase, P.O. Box 41430, San Jose, CA 95160. Subscriptions: (Bulk mail - one year - $25; two years - $45.) (First class - one year - $35; two years $65.) For processing of new subscriptions - please allow 4 to 6 weeks. For address corrections, send current mailing label along with new address to Pacific Showcase.

There are so many teachers in your life: at school, your parents, feed company representatives, and the breeders of your project animals, to name just a few. You can go online and look at so many websites, and see what different breeders are offering to help you make a project selection. But you can get so much more out of actually talking to a breeder. They can give you details on your animals and answer your questions and pass along their viewpoints and knowledge to you. Verbal communication builds a relationship that goes far beyond the cell phone or computer screen. Breeders I talk to love to share their knowledge with young showmen who want to learn. It is exciting to help build ideas and skills in a young person and then see them apply it and get an end result they are proud of.

Time to Plan Ahead! The November/December Issue is our

Jackpot Issue and the Start of the Sheep, Hog and Meat Goat Sales

Be sure to check out the CJLA section in this issue. The 2019 membership application is included for you to send in with your payment so you are ready to start earning points at your first show of the new year. You can also sign up on the CJLA website. As we head into Fall, we are already beginning to plan for the annual CJLA Year-end Award Banquet. Our big sponsorship drive is beginning and we are mailing out Sponsor Packets now. The CJLA relies on the generosity of so many great people and businesses who believe in our youth in agriculture. ABOUT THE

COVER

For over 20 years, Rodgers Livestock has been committed to providing elite show cattle and seed stock to our customers. Over the last year we have made some drastic changes to increase our effort to take care of every customer at the highest level. As many of you are aware, we have expanded our operation with a new location in Savannah, Missouri. After much consideration, the decision was made to add this location to help grow our operation and increase the number of of high quality cattle we could provide. The opportunity to be in the heart of the Midwest and move cattle back and forth from there to California has increased opportunity and allows us to meet the needs of our customers. This fall we will continue to sell cattle out of both Sanger, California, and Savannah, Missouri, on a first-come first-served basis. Feel free to contact us for information on what we have available, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Rodgers Livestock to keep up to date on what’s going on. We are fired up about the success our customers have experienced over the summer and can’t wait to get this years group of cattle into their new homes. We feel we have the deepest and most elite calf crop yet and can’t wait to work with you! Whether you are a repeat customer or considering coming to look at our cattle for the first time, we greatly appreciate your business and look forward to working with you this year!

NJSA 2018-2019 Junior board of directors Assuming a national leadership role of an organization of more than 13,000 youth from across the country is a big responsibility. It also provides a wonderful opportunity to sharpen leadership skills, improve communication skills, and develop decision-making skills. Junior Board members also work closely with a team of eight other talented individuals that become life-long friends. Serving on the NJSA Board is an awesome experience that is taken seriously so the members of our organization are served by the best leaders possible. Congratulations to Hannah Seymore for being elected to serve on the 2018-2019 Junior Board alongside Whitney Whitaker, also from California, and an elite group of youth swine enthusiasts from throughout the United States.
