Wedding Planning guide will help you keep everything under T his control and running smoothly. It allows an average of six to 12 months preparation, and is based on a traditional style wedding. If you plan to get married in a shorter time, or have a different style of wedding, don’t worry - the planning and order will remain much the same. It helps to start planning your wedding well in advance to ensure all runs smoothly. Delete any items that don’t concern you and insert any extra items, then just tick off your achievements as you go. 4

The Budget Y
ou’re engaged and you’ve set a date. Now what? In our experience as wedding planners, our first piece of advice to clients is set a wedding budget. Then, once you’ve determined the most you’re willing to spend (and where you’ll source the funds), set aside 20% of your total budget. Hide it. Get rid of it as far away from yourself as possible. This 20% will serve as your emergency fund ONLY IN AN EMERGENCY to cover last-minute purchases, or cost overruns. Holding fast to your budget will require discipline, courage and sheer willpower but you’ll be so much happier (and far less stressed), if you do. – Peter & Valeta Duncan. Wedding Venue
your preferred choice of wedding S electing venue can be quite a daunting task. Here are 5 quick-fire tips to consider before sealing the deal when it comes to booking the right wedding venue. Tip #1
Understand the logistics
Taking the logistics of a venue into consideration can actually save you big headaches later on - how many guests you will need the venue to fit, the season, time of day you want to have your wedding and any special needs your guests might need (i.e. can your venue of choice accommodate guests on site?). 10
If the venue holds weddings in all seasons, make sure you ask questions such as, “Is there heat and air conditioning? Is there a ‘backup’ space in the event of rain?” Tip #2
Visit your venue at the right time of day
Visit your venue at the very time of day your wedding will be held. Everything from how the light floods into the area where your ceremony and/or reception will be hosted, to how quickly it gets cold, or when the sun sets, could determine whether this is the right venue choice for you. If you’ve secured the services of a wedding planner or coordinator, this is also the perfect time to take them out to the venue. Oftentimes, those wedding professionals may have worked with the property before and able to share valuable insights and impartial advice. Tip # 3 Read
the fine-print
There are two very different types of wedding venue: full service and venue only. A full service wedding venue may include table linen, chair covers, linens and catering supplies. On the other hand, “venue only” offers you the space and it’s up to you to do the rest. 11
You will be responsible for booking all of the vendors for the wedding day. Either way, it’s important you read the fine-print of any contract before signing, so you’ve a clear understanding of what the venue can, or can’t, offer you leading into and on your ‘Big Day’. Tip #4 Decide
On Your Wedding Style & Feel
Your wedding “vision” may involve a romantic vineyard, an elegant barn, or a secluded escape. But just like it’s not easy to fit a square peg into a round hole, it is not easy to plan a style-specific wedding at all venues. Taking into account what style wedding you want will help you choose the venues you need to visit. Tip #5 Ask,
Ask & Ask Again
Most venues will have someone with whom you can ask the myriad of questions you’ll have when seeking your perfect venue. Important questions you might not think to ask are: “How many weddings are held here in one a day? Who will be here helping me the actual day of the wedding? Do you have any construction or landscape changes coming up before my wedding? Do you anticipate any changes to the venue before the wedding day?” Just when you think you have asked enough questions, ask again and then, of course, get everything in writing! 12
A stunning azure lake and bottle green hills make the perfect venue for the most important day of your life. Whether you and your partner are wishing to be married on the sandy white shores, in a secluded bush setting or at the lodge with the views of the stunning vista in the background, the choice is yours to decide. Lakes Lodge is a great winter wedding venue as well. Lakes Lodge Wilderness Retreat | 692 Lake Okataina Road | Rotorua p | +64 7 362 7849 e | weddings@lakeslodge.co.nz w | lakeslodge.co.nz

Choo se your
Celebrant
you do, don’t choose purely on price. Whatever Cheap is not always best. You may not think so, but your celebrant has a large influence on your wedding day. They’re the first person your valued guests will come into contact with and will set the benchmark leading into, during, and post-ceremony if they mingle with your guests directly following the ceremonies conclusion. 26
Consider these handy tips before making your choice:
Male or Female? - Do you prefer one or the other or are you not fussed? Make sure you ask your partner too. Don’t assume they’ll want the same as you…
Personal style - Does the celebrant have a personal style or way of conducting a ceremony? Do they present as relaxed, welcoming, with a weave of humour mixed in for good measure? It’s important you choose a celebrant who not only understands your wedding day ‘vision’, but is also sensitive to your values and beliefs. If you really want to personalise your wedding, ensure you choose a celebrant who “gets you” as a couple.
Cost - New Zealand celebrants range in price on average from $350.00 - $700.00. Factors influencing price may include level of experience, qualifications, and in some cases whether the celebrant is a radio or TV celebrity. Again, while price may be an important consideration, having the right celebrant setting the atmosphere on one of the most important days of your life can’t be understated. Throughout the process of selecting your celebrant, remember this is all about you, your love and your future together. 27
If you’ve short-listed candidate celebrants you’re wishing to interview, here are some important questions to pose: * Ask the Celebrant about the extent and breadth of their experience, particularly if you have specific ideas as to how you’d like to approach your ceremony. * Ask what help, information and resources they provide to couples in terms of ceremonies, traditions, readings and writing personal vows; and if appropriate, ask about equipment such as PA systems for outdoor ceremonies. * Ask how they work and what the process will be. A celebrant should explain how they work. Choose someone who will guide you clearly during the process of creating your ceremony, encouraging you to participate in the process, to ensure that you achieve what you want in terms of content, style and tone. A great celebrant should inspire you with confidence, so that you can relax and anticipate your wedding day with excitement. After all, this is the day on which you will make your vows to the person you love and want to spend the rest of your life with. – Peter Duncan [Managing Director/Co-founder, The Wedding Guy]

Photographer &Videographer wedding day images will record one of most Y our significant occasions in your life, so choosing your
photographer/videographer is an important decision to make. Consider these essential elements: their personality, style, and package price. Select someone you feel comfortable with and whose professional style you relate to. Make sure to discuss the timing of the whole day with them so you’re all aware of whether there is enough time for the amount of images you would like to be taken. 33
Questions for your photographer: • Are you able to see albums of previous weddings they have photographed? • Do they belong to a registered organisation (e.g. the NZ Institute of Professional Photographers)? If things don’t go to plan, it gives you an organisation to fall back on for complaints etc. • What packages do they offer? Full day, half day or do they charge an hourly rate? Are they GST registered? • Do they provide digital negatives? At what cost? • What ideas do they have for photography locations? • Do they have two sets of equipment in case one breaks down or batteries die?And do they have options for one photographer or two? • Do they have a contract or some type of guarantee? • Are they happy for guests to take photographs at the same time? Are you? • Do they have a studio or some alternative for wet weather? • Do they have options for you to make instalment payments? • Do they offer albums and books, CDs, DVDs, enlargements etc? • How long after the day until you see the proofs? 34

Videography – Love In Motion Moving images and sound create lasting impressions on people. There is a fundamental shift in the way that Kiwi couples are choosing to remember their wedding day. And there’s an equal shift in the way videographers are capturing a wedding day: employing cinematic technique and employing drones to capture stunning results. Whether you appreciate it, or not, your wedding day will be over in a flash. A film can help you remember all the little details, preserve the big moments and experience some of the things you didn’t see the first time. Remember too, you’ve spent countless hours planning, preparing, anticipating and spending money to make your big day perfect. You deserve to have the best way to remember it. Create something memorable you will cherish forever. Don’t leave it too late as popular photographers and videographers are booked well into the next wedding season! 36

Music and Entertainment
O
ne of the best investments on your wedding day is your entertainment. It is the chance to relax and have some fun. Make sure your Wedding DJ has wedding experience - a club, bar, garage, rugby function DJ is not a wedding DJ! A good wedding DJ will take pride in their appearance and setup, ensuring everything looks immaculate. Ask them to show you pictures of some past wedding setups, and to let you know what you can expect.
50
Cheap speakers produce cheap sound and are not reliable. Professional speakers are expensive. Ask your DJ what brand of speakers they intend to bring. (Examples of quality brands are JBL, QSC, and RCF.) Make sure the DJ will play music you and your guests want to hear; a good wedding DJ will have experience in diverse crowds and know how to cater for all. It is worth noting some DJs refuse to take requests and want total control over the music - will you be happy with that? Equipment will fail at some stage; does the DJ have a backup plan on the night? Make sure the DJ has a signed written contract you both agree to. This will protect you from the DJ bringing the wrong equipment, starting late, finishing early or not turning up at all. If the DJ says a contract is not needed, find another DJ who does! Invest in a professional wedding DJ, and make sure your guests leave with memories of a great wedding. - Joel from Absolute DJs www.absolutedjs.co.nz

Perfect Dress
I
t’s so much more than just a dress! Find the perfect silhouette for your shape and focus on your personal style. Don’t worry about the size on the label, just find the right fit for you and feel fabulous. Find the right colour for your skin tone - there are various shades of white from ivory to alabaster.
Are you considering a veil? Veils flatter the face and give a bride an air of mystery and innocence. Generally, the more formal the occasion, the longer the veil. Take your time and consider all the options. You’ll look and feel beautiful on your special day. 56

The right choice of dress: The style you choose may be classic, trendy or have elements of both. Chances are, the basic construction will be similar to one of the styles below:
Mermaid/Fishtail This dress hugs the body and begins to flair, usually at the knee. The flare can be modest or exaggerated. This design accentuates a woman’s figure and shows particularly well on tall, athletic women, or the classic hourglass shape.
Column/Sheath This dress has a narrow shape that flows straight down from the neckline to the hem. It tends to hug the body and show any and all curves. The column is appropriate for all types of weddings, especially casual occasions on the beach. This silhoette suits the hourglass figure, tall & thin, and the petite.
Modified A-Line Fitted on the bodice and hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. The skirt of a modified A-line dress fits closer to the body than a traditional A-line. Ideal for all body types. 58
Ball Gown/Princess This is the classic fairytale princess dress. It has a long, flowing skirt and a fitted bodice. It has lots of fullness, created with petticoats or hoops. Well suited to the tall & thin, apple shape and pear shape.
Tea Length A dress that falls in between the ankle and the knee. Ideal for all body types.
Trumpet Fitted through the body and flairs mid-thigh. The cut is between a modified a-line and a mermaid cut. Ideal for frames with small waists. This style of dress accentuates your tummy and hip area. Suits hour glass and tall & thin.
A- line A fitted bodice that has a modest flair in the skirt. A-line wedding dress designs are among the most popular sold today. This is a universal classic that suits almost any body type. 59

Letterpress revival From the beginning of mechanical printing in 1445, letterpress was the only method of printing. It was the new technology of the day, that spread quickly from Germany to the known world, just as the internet (in 25 years) has taken over communication today. Letterpress lasted for over 500 years. It had all but disappeared by the 1970s, being replaced first by offset printing and today, more and more by digital printers. However in the last few years worldwide, there has been a revival of letterpress print: mixing old press technology with computer generated text and graphics. Letterpress is again available with its unique qualities; tactile, with a deep inked impression, giving a wonderfully sharp and crisp look, both distinctive and elegant. With interesting design, letterpress printed stationery can look more like a piece of art rather than just a nice invitation. 65
