Wedding Celebrants & Planners The Role of A Wedding Celebrant
by Peter l. Duncan
A common misconception when planning a wedding is that of underestimating the role a celebrant plays. The celebrant, believe it or not, sets the tone for wedding guests prior to the brides arrival, ensuring your guests (and most often a very nervous groom) are relaxed and settled. From the time the bride arrives to meet her groom, the celebrants role is one of efficiently navigating a seamless wedding ceremony, which best reflects the life and love of the couple, making it appear effortless. Your wedding day should be unique and memorable for all the “right reasons”, and while all celebrants are required to meet the same legal requirements in registering your marriage, no two celebrants will go about the planning and presentation of your ceremony in the same way. It’s therefore vital to choose your celebrant carefully, and within reason, you should not make your decision based upon cost alone: cheap is not necessarily best. Remember, you deserve the best, and more importantly, your ceremony cannot be repeated. Your celebrant should be a great listener, appreciative of your needs, and give you the confidence that your ceremony will be professionally prepared and conducted. Most importantly, your celebrant needs to be the right fit for you as a couple, evidencing a clear appreciation of your needs, concerns, personalities, and what you wish to achieve for your ‘Big Day’. Consider the following points before making your preferred celebrant choice: - Do you want a contemporary or traditional ceremony, or do you want a simple and relaxed ceremony, or something different? - Does your celebrant have lots of great ideas and does he/she give you the impression that your marriage is as important to him/her as it is to yourselves? - Is the product that the celebrant is offering in tune with what you might want? - Does your celebrant have a clear speaking voice and is an experienced public speaker. Will all your guests be able to hear the ceremony? - Does your celebrant use a PA system, and if so, does he/she provide this as part of their services? - If you change your mind about the content (or style) of your ceremony is your celebrant sufficiently innovative and flexible to adapt as well? - Does your celebrant have both a professional air as well as a friendly approachable demeanour? - Do you feel that you will be welcome to contact your celebrant about any issues regarding your ceremony and not be considered a nuisance or a bother? - Is the fee that the celebrant quoted you earlier the total charge, or are there (hidden) extra charges that might be levied later? Should you decide to add elements to your ceremony will this involve an
3
additional charge? - Does your celebrant have testimonials from previous clients that you could have a look at? - Does your celebrant have photos of recent weddings that he/she has conducted? - Does your celebrant take bookings for more than one ceremony per day? - What happens if your ceremony runs over time or there is an inordinate delay in agreed upon time for the start of the ceremony? - What happens if after paying any required deposit, your ceremony needs to be cancelled?
The Paperwork - A Marriage Licence application, referred to as a ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ BDM 60 can be obtained from a Marriage Registrar’s office in your area or on-line via the Department of Internal Affairs website: www.bdm.govt.nz - If applying for a Marriage Licence in Rotorua, you will need to go to the Rotorua District Court (located on Tutanekai Street). If you’re seeking to marry in Rotorua but live elsewhere, you can apply for your Marriage Licence in the Town/City in which you live. Legal requirements for your ceremony in NZ are: - You must be married by a registered* wedding celebrant. *To find out if a Celebrant is formally registered in New Zealand, then visit the Births, Deaths, Marriages website via www.bdm.govt.nz - You must have a marriage licence to be signed on the day by bride and groom, two witnesses and the wedding celebrant - You must marry at either of the two places mentioned on your marriage licence application - During the ceremony you must say to each other in some way that you are going to take each other as husband and wife - The full names of the couple must be used when making their declaration - You must be over the age of 16 years of age. If you are 16-20 year old, you need the signature of your guardian or one of your parents. For details on current cost of licence applications refer to www.bdm.govt.nz
Meeting a prospective Celebrant for the first time Here is a check-list of suggested questions for your celebrant on interviewing them for the first time. - Is the celebrant currently registered as either an Organisational or Independent Marriage Celebrant in New Zealand? - How much input will you (the Bride & Groom), have into the preparation of your ceremony? i.e., Can you write your own vows? Will you know what the celebrant intends to say at your ceremony? In what ways will your ceremony be personalised? - If you have children what suggestions does the celebrant have for including them in the ceremony? - Will you feel comfortable working with your celebrant in preparing the content of your ceremony? - Does your celebrant offer you a selection of preambles (ceremony suggestions, wedding vows, etiquette, samples of poems or readings etc) from which to choose? - Does the celebrant inspire you with a feeling of confidence? - Does the celebrant have a professional manner?

Alternative Wedding FREE TO BE ME
By Shotgun Bridal
When most people hear the phrase ‘Alternative Wedding’ they envision some mad mixture of vampiremeets-punk rocker with the groom in a tutu. Whilst not ruling that intriguing combo out, Shotgun Bridal is here to tell you otherwise: Alternative/Unique is about the freedom to be yourself, in whatever capacity you wish to incorporate. It’s 2012: we have reached a worldwide point (somewhere between fashion and rebellion) where stereotypes and strict traditions have been left for dust. Say hello to individuality. Two huge trends I am seeing for the upcoming season have great potential for creativity: Vintage 1920s flapper inspired themes, and Naturalistic outdoor weddings harking back to early traditions, are making a definite surge. Another interesting development is the appearance of white on white - in some cases making it difficult to distinguish the bride from the bridesmaids. Fascinatingly, the origin of bridesmaids (along with many other traditions) lies in superstition: the bridesmaids were originally dressed to match the bride, and utilised as decoys for any evil spirits that might be floating around on her wedding day. Something I often hear from brides, is “I love alternative weddings, I love reading about them and looking at the colourful photography. I admire couples who have the courage. BUT...It’s not me.” Shotgun Bridal asks “What is you?” After all, it’s your day! A Marriage itself is about the meshing of two unique individuals and their personalities, creating something new, wonderful and unexplored. An adventure. Your wedding is a celebration of that and everything it means to you. Unlike any other service provider in New Zealand, Shotgun Bridal solely caters to the personal touch, creative/unique inspirations, and the best of what New Zealand has to offer to make these visions a reality. Our website (see advert) is a FREE interactive wonderland full of resources, articles and a host of local talent. By Kiwis for Kiwis - and eventual world domination.

Wedding Venues Choosing the Venue
by Valeta J. Duncan
Many outdoor venues in Rotorua can be secured for a minimum fee with maximum results! The picturesque city is background enough for any ceremony and photo shoot. Before deciding on your venue, ask yourself: - How big is our budget? - How many guests do we need to accommodate? - Do we want one property for the ceremony and reception or will 2 separate venues be OK? - Do we want to be married indoors or outdoors? - Do we want to be married in a church or a garden? - Do we want to be involved in the setup of the venue? - Once you’ve thought about these things, visit a few of the venues that fit your criteria and take a walk through, imagining yourself there with your groom and your family and friends. - Take photos of the venues and go home and decide.
Lakeland Queen is the most romantic way to experience the stunning 360Ëš vistas of beautiful Lake Rotorua. It’s good advice, but more in terms of teamwork, respect and common values, than getting exactly what you want - down to the last detail - on your wedding day. It augurs well for your future relationship when you have both talked through what your hopes are for the day, discussed any possible pitfalls, and generally agreed upon what you are comfortable spending – you’ll be drawing on your shared experience of other people’s weddings to do this. As in any relationship, there will be compromises, while respecting the elements each of you value most. The biggest factor in a wedding budget is the number attending. The second biggest factor is the amount of help you have available, and are happy to have involved, closely followed by the amount of time for planning. The longer you have to organise, the better the outcome - cost and stress wise. Then start getting quotes for the different types of wedding expenditures such as: venue, celebrant, attire, catering, photography, invitations, entertainment, flowers, cake, rings, transport, thank you gifts, stag and hen parties, and the honeymoon. Ask married friends about their budgets and for any tips they may have. As in any financial plan, if it doesn’t work the first time, go back to the drawing board. It may be that Plan B or Plan C might bring out your best and most creative ideas. It may help to factor in help from family and friends. This means more people to reach agreement with, but if done well and early, will reduce your stress and costs. It could be that parents are unable to provide cash but would consider helping you to obtain finance for the wedding by guaranteeing or offering security to get things underway. The process of planning a wedding will stand you in good stead in your married life – you’ll be eminently qualified to sort your joint expenses and build your future finances – just think what the two of you can achieve when you keep planning together! Start as you mean to finish!

Wedding Photography Choosing a wedding photographer
by Tracey Robinson Tracey Robinson Photography
Spending the extra for a professional photographer is not so much an expense as it is an investment, because at the end of the day, photographs and memories are all you have to cherish and to hand down to the generations to follow. It is very important that you select a photographer that you feel comfortable with and whose style of photography is one that you can relate to. Often, the more weddings they have photographed, the more they can help explain how it all works and where and when appropriate images can be best taken. Make sure to discuss the timing of the whole day with your photographer, so they and you understand if there is enough time for the amount of images that you would like to be taken. Questions to ask your prospective Photographer. - Ask to see images from weddings they have photographed and not just one or two, as anyone can fluke one or two good images from a day, but ask to see the whole album. - Are they a member of a registered organisation such as the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers - and are they a qualified member? Remember this can be important if things don’t go to plan, It gives you an organisation to fall back on for complaints etc. - What packages do they offer: full day, half day or hourly rate? - Do they provide digital negatives and at what cost? - What ideas do they have for locations? - Do they have two sets of equipment in case one breaks down? - Do they have a contract or some type of guarantee? - Is the photographer happy for guests to take photographs at the same time? - Do they have a studio or some alternative for wet weather? - Do they have options for one photographer or two? - Do they have options for you to make instalment payments? - Do they offer albums and books, CDs DVDs enlargements etc.? - Are they GST registered? - How long after the day until you see the proofs?
Create something memorable you will cherish forever. 19

Wedding Videography “UNCLE CHARLIE” vs a Wedding Videographer
by Ron Heydon “Magic Moments” Specialist Wedding Videography
If you want: - Blurry, out of focus video - Shaky cam footage - Camera batteries going flat at the wrong moment - A stressed out relative who should be enjoying your wedding day - Bad sound ...then get “Uncle Charlie” to video your wedding. However, if you want: - Rock steady video footage - Sharply in focus - Recorded in full HD (High Definition) quality - Great clear sound recorded through radio microphones - A professionally edited and titled video package which you will treasure for years to come as a great record of your most special day ... HIRE A WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHY PROFESSIONAL. Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and deserves to be recorded professionally, by an experienced videographer, who has wide experience in recording your wedding including all the little extras often missed by your photographer. Questions to ask your wedding videographer when making your choices: - How long have you been in the industry? - Do you have sample videos to look at? - How long do you spend at the wedding? - What do you cover? - What camera format do you use ? - What do we get for our money? - What packages do you offer? - How soon after the wedding do we get to see our video? - Can you send to YouTube etc? - Can we get extra copies later? - Who holds the copyright to the video? - Do you have a license to reproduce the music legally? - Does the videographer expect a meal? Answers to some, or all, of these questions should give you a good indication that you have chosen wisely. Most important is whether you feel comfortable with the videographer after you have met him (or her).
24
Don’t forget this is your day and any good videographer will be focused on your requirements and customise the coverage to suit you, not him. The current very popular trend is a short 7 to 10 minute video package which is a pacy highlights package set to your favourite music and focusing on the little things (flowers, jewellery, shoes, getting ready, highlights of the service etc). If it is kept to under 10 minutes, this package can be viewed on you tube etc. and is a great way to show friends and family a lovely record of the wedding without the traditional 1 to 2 hour video. Most videographers will also provide a full version of the day - usually at a later date for those who want to watch the whole day repeated. A professionally recorded and edited wedding video is a valuable record of your day and as such, should not to be left to “ UNCLE CHARLIE”!
Relive your special day

The Wedding Dress Choosing your wedding dress
by Kelly Sefton, Fab Frocks
Many women spend years planning their dream wedding dress. Others don’t give it any thought until they become engaged. Whatever your situation, there are a number of factors to consider when shopping for your perfect dress. Here are three which are very important: COST - Set a realistic budget before you start looking at dresses, and stick to it. It is easy to get swept up in the romance of a high end designer gown, and blow your budget completely. Likewise, if looking at a low cost dress remember the adage that sometimes “you get what you pay for”. Beware of fakes and consult a specialist bridal store at least 6 months before your wedding. A good bridal retailer will not show you items which are out of your price range. CUT - Try on lots of different gowns to see what styles, and fabrics, flatter your figure. Look at classic styles as well as the latest fashion trends. Always expect alterations to your dress to achieve a perfect fit. Wear proper undergarments to your fittings and bring a trusted friend who will give you honest opinions. You are not usually allowed to take photos. If you are over a size 16 then seek out the services of a plus size specialist. COMFORT - Be realistic about any expected weight loss before your wedding day, and the size of dress you order. You will spend the best part of a whole day in one outfit and need to be comfortable. Think carefully about your shoes too. Sore feet or a dress which is overly tight, hot or heavy, may overshadow your special day. The best advice is to buy a dress that fits you now and plan on alterations to down size it to a perfect fit. Notes

Wedding Hair and Makeup Some Wedding Makeup tips
by Haley Hogan, Makeup Artist, Rotorua
Wedding makeup should compliment and bring out your best features, rather than overpower your face. You will want your makeup to last as long as possible so you need to use good quality products applied in the correct manner. A good skin base will also help your makeup to last longer. Maybe consider facials or mircodermabrasion, but be careful not to book any too close to your wedding day, as they do sometimes make the odd blemish come out. It’s recommended that you have a makeup trial prior to your wedding day. You want to make sure that you are not going to get any surprises on your big day! The use of either eyelash extensions, or false eyelashes, can really enhance anyone’s eye shape. Eyelash extensions are best applied one or two days prior to your wedding and will last 2-4 weeks. False eyelashes will be applied on the day for the day. When choosing lip colour remember that you will need to reapply throughout the day. One option that can look great is using a lip stain/pencil initially, then a coloured lip gloss on top. Coloured lip glosses are great and easy to reapply without a mirror for touch ups. What to consider when choosing a makeup artist Your makeup is going to be part of your big day so you want your makeup artist to be easy to get on with, as well as professional. See if you can look at examples of their past work in either a portfolio or on a website. Can you see that they have created looks in the past that you would like yourself?

Fitness Bride-to-Be Fitness Looking your best on your wedding day. Every bride wants to look stunning as she walks down the aisle. Along with beautiful hair and makeup, manicured nails and a lovely dress, she wants a toned and trim body. Knowing all eyes will be on you during your big day gives most brides the motivation to get into shape. The ideal time to start your Wedding Day Shape Up programme is 8-9 weeks before the event. It is usually fat-loss and toned tummies that most brides want to achieve, though many also want to tone hips, butts and upper arms, because of the dress they will be wearing. The most effective plan is to combine full body strength training with interval training. Full-body strength training is the fastest way to tone - without building bulky muscle. This will also increase your metabolism, burning more calories. Interval training helps with fat-loss by using maximum calories in a short time. Combining these training methods is the most effective way to change your body-shape. Losing weight is a separate issue from reducing body-fat. If dropping kilograms is your goal you need to change your diet. Fat stored around the middle is metabolically active – and closely related to hormonal influences. Fluctuations in cortisol and insulin caused by too many refined sugars and too much stress is common. To reduce this fat, it is important to eat lots of fibrous vegetables and lean protein, with small amounts of fruit and high quality essential fats. Stress, fatigue and alcohol also interfere with your hormonal balance so make sure you get plenty of rest and keep alcohol to a minimum. If you haven’t worked out for a long time and are starting a pre-wedding programme, give yourself 12-16 weeks, so that you can start easier and get some basic conditioning before you begin higher intensity workouts. It is very important that you don’t get injured so make sure that you seek advice from a qualified person before starting any exercise programme.
Best of luck for your special day. Susan Birch Exercise Specialist MHSc (Otago)

Wedding Traditions Wedding Traditions
by Peter L. Duncan, The Wedding Guy
Where does the bride stand – on the left or on the right? In the good ol’ days, getting married was not quite as much fun as it is today. The bride was often kidnapped by her groom and as such, he ensured to keep her on his left hand side so that he can fend off any grumpy relatives with his right hand. (That’s assuming he’s right handed!) This is why the bride stands on the left of her groom during the ceremony. However...once they’re married, she then switches to the right hand side. This tradition comes down from the days when the husband would protect his wife from the splashes of mud on the road and therefore, keep her on the inside of the path. Wedding Rings What exactly is a wedding ring? The wedding rings embody the continuous flow of love, a circle that symbolises eternity, with no beginning or end. The wedding ring is a symbol of never-ending love and devotion between husband and wife and is an appropriate sign for the true meaning of marriage. The ring unites the married couple through happy or sad times. In older times, the wedding rings were not only a sign of love, but were also linked to the bestowal of ‘earnest money’. According to the prayer book of Edward VI: after the words ‘With this ring I thee wed’ follow the words ‘This gold and silver I give thee’, at which point the groom was supposed to hand a leather purse filled with gold and silver coins to the bride. Why kiss the Bride? As far as tradition goes, the wedding kiss that seals the wedding is much more than a sign of affection. It has long been a token of bonding and the exchange of spirits as each partner sends a part of their self into the new spouse’s soul, there to abide ever after. Why give away the Bride? The root cause of this tradition is somewhat controversial. Not too long ago, women were considered to be the property of men. This applied not just to wives, but to daughters as well. Many people see the giving away of the bride as an extension of a system which kept women from being recognised as equals. However, there is also a school of thought that interprets the giving of the bride as a symbolic realisation of the Bible verse that describes a marriage as two people leaving their families to start a new life together. In this context, the phrase is used less as an exchange of property and more as the exchange of one support system for another. Did You Know? (What’s In A Name?) In NZ, when you get married, under common law, the bride and groom can be called by either name. If they are not formally changing their name on their birth registration, they will establish their new name by use and reputation. An example of assuming a name is acquiring a spouses/partners surname after marriage.
