Financial Planning

As a former Financial Planner with a large NZ retail bank, I had the privilege of working alongside some very wealthy and savvy business people in assisting them with their investment and overall risk portfolios. The greatest lesson I learned during this time was that receiving the best advice from industry professionals is hugely important toward making great life choices.

of two beautiful girls, here’s what I’d most likely say to that 19 year young fellow (and maybe you too if you haven’t considered these things). Begin your wedding adventure on the right foot, and consider consulting a professional about the things that while seemingly unimportant right now (like a creating a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney documents, mortgage and life insurance advice), could Now, as a Celebrant and wedding planner, prove to be invaluable to you later. I still see incredible value in sharing the – Peter Duncan, Happy husband, doting Dad, principle of seeking great advice from a.k.a. The Wedding Guy Company. ‘those in the know’, especially when embarking on one of life’s greatest adventures – marriage. When I married my sweetheart at the tender age of 19, “You have brains in your I didn’t know a lot about getting a Will, how to get the best deal on a mortgage, head.

You’re on – as like most young people, I counted your own. And you know what myself pretty indestructible and all you know.
And YOU are the that serious stuff was a long way off. As I look back in hindsight through the spectacles of a husband to a beautiful wife of 24 years, and dad 20

The Role of A Wedding Celebrant A common misconception when planning a wedding is that of underestimating the role a celebrant plays. The celebrant, believe it or not, sets the tone for wedding guests prior to the brides arrival, ensuring your guests (and most often a very nervous groom) are relaxed and settled. From the time the bride arrives to meet her groom, the celebrants role is one of efficiently navigating a seamless wedding ceremony, which best reflects the life and love of the couple, making it appear effortless. Your wedding day should be unique and memorable for all the “right reasons”, and while all celebrants are required to meet the same legal requirements in registering your marriage, no two celebrants will go about the planning and presentation of your ceremony in the same way. It’s therefore vital to choose your celebrant carefully, and within reason, you should not make your decision based upon cost alone: cheap is not necessarily best. Remember, you deserve the best, and more importantly, your ceremony cannot be repeated. Your celebrant should be a great listener, appreciative of your needs, and give you the confidence that 28

your ceremony will be professionally prepared and conducted. Your celebrant needs to be the right fit for you as a couple, evidencing a clear appreciation of your needs, concerns, personalities, and what you wish to achieve for your ‘Big Day’. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING POINTS BEFORE MAKING YOUR PREFERRED CELEBRANT CHOICE: - Do you want a contemporary or traditional ceremony, or do you want a simple and relaxed ceremony, or something different? - Does your celebrant have lots of great ideas and does he/she give you the impression that your marriage is as important to him/her as it is to yourselves? - Is the product that the celebrant is offering in tune with what you want? - Does your celebrant have a clear speaking voice and are they an experienced public speaker? Will all your guests be able to hear the ceremony? - Does your celebrant use a PA system, and if so, does he/she provide this as part of their services? - If you change your mind about the content (or style) of your ceremony is your celebrant sufficiently innovative and flexible to adapt as well? - Does your celebrant have both a

professional air as well as a friendly approachable demeanor? - Do you feel that you will be welcome to contact your celebrant about any issues regarding your ceremony and not be considered a nuisance? - Is the fee that the celebrant quoted you earlier the total charge, or are there (hidden) extra charges that might be levied later? Should you decide to add elements to your ceremony will this involve an additional charge? - Does your celebrant have testimonials from previous clients that you could have a look at? - Does your celebrant have photos of recent weddings that he/she has conducted? - Does your celebrant take bookings for more than one ceremony per day? - What happens if your ceremony runs over time or there is an inordinate delay in agreed upon time for the start of the ceremony? - What happens if after paying any required deposit, your ceremony needs to be cancelled?

MEETING A PROSPECTIVE CELEBRANT FOR THE FIRST TIME Here is a check-list of suggested questions for your celebrant on interviewing them for the first time.

- Is the celebrant currently registered as either an Organisational or Independent Marriage Celebrant in New Zealand? - How much input will you (the Bride & Groom), have into the preparation of your ceremony? i.e. Can you write your own vows? Will you know what the celebrant intends to say at your ceremony? In what ways will your ceremony be personalised? - If you have children what suggestions does the celebrant have for including them in the ceremony? - Will you feel comfortable working with your celebrant in preparing the content of your ceremony? - Does your celebrant offer you a selection of preambles (ceremony suggestions, wedding vows, etiquette, samples of poems or readings etc) from which to choose? - Does the celebrant inspire you with a feeling of confidence? - Does the celebrant have professional manner? We hope this has been helpful to your choice of wedding celebrant or officiant.

Choosing the Right Photographer Choosing the right photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as you plan your wedding. Out of all the professionals who help make your wedding day special (celebrant, florist, cake maker, dress designer etc), it’s your wedding photographer who will spend much of the day with you, so it’s important you find one who you can work closely with, have fun with, while also being confident you’re getting the photos you deserve. At the end of the day, investing wisely in a photographer will ensure you get great photographs to share with family & friends for years to come. Some things to consider when choosing your wedding photographer: · Research the photographers in your area. Ask friends or other wedding specialists for recommendations. Word of mouth speaks volumes. · Check out their work. Do they have a style you like? Make sure you ask to see the photos from an entire wedding, not just a few ‘best’ shots. This will give you confidence that they can capture the story of your day. · How many weddings have they photographed? An experienced wedding photographer will have shot a wide range of weddings and will have good suggestions for how to get the shots you want. They will also have 34

plenty of tips on how to make the whole day run smoothly, so pick their brains. · What range of services do they offer? Do they have a range of different wedding packages? How flexible are they? Can they tailor make a package to suit your day? Do they have a contract or some type of guarantee? Do they have backup equipment in case of a break down? How are the photos presented to you? Do you get a disc of high resolution photos, and are they edited? Can you have your photos professionally printed? · Are Albums or Photo Books available? Many brides who choose photographers that only give them a disc of their images (no album, prints or other items) find that they lack the time, software or knowledge to create their own albums. · How long does it take to get your photos back after your wedding day? · How and when do you need to pay by? Can you make installment payments? · Are they GST registered? · Is the photographer friendly and approachable? Ask yourself, “Is this someone I will want to have around if I’m feeling stressed or emotional on my wedding day?” - Kylie Day Kylie Day Photography www.kyliedayphotography.co.nz

Choosing your Videographer Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and deserves to be recorded professionally, by an experienced videographer, who has wide experience in recording your wedding including all the little extras often missed by your photographer. Questions to ask your wedding videographer when making your choices: - How long have you been in the industry? - Do you have sample videos to look at? - How long do you spend at the wedding? - What do you cover? - What camera format do you use ? - What do we get for our money? - What packages do you offer? - How soon after the wedding do we get to see our video? - Can you send to YouTube etc? - Can we get extra copies later? - Who holds the copyright to the video? - Do you have a license to reproduce the music legally? - Does the videographer expect a meal? Answers to these questions should give you a good indication that you have chosen wisely. Most important is whether you feel comfortable with the videographer after you have met him/her. Don’t forget this is your day and any good videographer will be focused on your requirements and customise the

coverage to suit you, not him. The current very popular trend is a short 7 to 10 minute video package which is a pacy highlights package set to your favourite music and focusing on the little things (flowers, jewellery, shoes, getting ready, highlights of the service etc). If it is kept to under 10 minutes, this package can be viewed on you tube etc. and is a great way to show friends and family a lovely record of the wedding without the traditional 1 to 2 hour video. Most videographers will also provide a full version of the day - usually at a later date for those who want to watch the whole day repeated. A professionally recorded and edited wedding video is a valuable record of your day and as such, should not to be left to non professionals. Relive your special day

How to choose the Right Wedding DJ One of the best investments you can make on your wedding day is on your entertainment. It is the icing on the cake on your special day and a chance to relax and have some fun. Make sure your Wedding DJ has “Wedding experience. A club, bar, garage, Rugby function DJ is not a Wedding DJ! A good Wedding DJ will take pride in his appearance and setup, ensuring everything looks immaculate. Ask the DJ to show you pictures of some past wedding setups, and to let you know what you can expect. If they cannot provide pictures, chances are the setup is not worth showing. Professional speakers are expensive. Cheap speakers produce cheap sound and are not reliable. Ask your Wedding DJ what brand of speakers he intends to bring. Quality brands such as JBL, QSC, and RCF are examples of very good brands.

Make sure the DJ will play music that you and your guests want to hear; a good Wedding DJ will have experience in diverse crowds and know how to cater for all. It is worth noting some DJs refuse to take requests and want total control over the music - are you going to be happy with that? Equipment will fail at some stage; does the DJ have a backup plan on the night? Finally, make sure the DJ has a signed written contract you both agree to. This will protect you from the DJ bringing the wrong equipment, starting late, finishing early or not turning up at all. If the DJ says a contract is not needed, find another DJ who does. Invest in a professional wedding DJ, and make sure your guests leave with memories of a great wedding.

Flowers for the Big Day It’s a daunting task getting every wedding detail perfect. Floral arrangements - from the Bride’s beautiful bouquet, Grooms party’s boutonnieres, through to the wedding reception table settings - are often reflective of the Bride’s unique style and personal taste. It’s important that your florist is able to understand your “vision” of your wedding day and is able to creatively translate your ideas into reality. When seeking your florist, the process should start with an appointment to discuss ideas. Bring along sketches or magazine examples of the gowns, fabric samples, and thoughts on bouquet styles. It’s also helpful to do some online homework (on NZ websites) to check the availability of preferred seasonal flowers. Knowing the details – including the style of the wedding, when/where it’s been held, what the flower and colour preferences are, what the budget is, what the men will be wearing, if there are flower-girls/pages, and whether other floral accessories like corsages, buttonholes, headpieces, table centre pieces, wedding cake flowers or venue/ pew decorations are planned – allows your florist to picture the overall coordinated effect, and come up with 54

inspired suggestions to perfectly harmonise with all the other wedding day elements. A great florist can effectively work within a specific budget, or quote for the ultimate dream option. As part of the discussion process, your chosen florist will offer lots of helpful suggestions designed to maximise the “wow factor” for brides on more modest budgets. For instance, keeping the maids’ flowers to one or two beautiful blooms, some foliage and a beautifully trimmed handle, enables the focus to remain on the all-important bridal bouquet; incorporating expensive ‘wish-list’ blooms like orchids, roses or lilies amongst complementary but less lavish flowers; or simplify/minimise the floral arrangements outside of the actual bridal party. You might also discover that your florist can even provide accessories to dress an outdoor wedding location, and is happy to offer DIY suggestions for dressing venues.

Transport on your Special Day

57

Planning your Transport The sooner you plan your mode of transport the better. It’s amazing how many people do get married on the same day, particularly in the “wedding season”. The transport is often the groom or best man’s responsibility, so keep on their case as these decisions are important and usually left to the last.

If you do choose a limousine as your preferred mode of transport, here are valuable points to consider: Choose a company that is fully insured and registered as a commercial vehicle. This is for your protection should there be an accident on the day (of course no one wants to see this happen).

When choosing your transport, some vehicles are not easy to disembark elegantly - especially with a full wedding dress. So, it’s very important that you ask to view the transport that The most economical could be found you are keen on before paying any within your family and friends, who have deposits, and while you’re enquiring similar vehicles in make, model and about the deposit, also ask if you are colour, so ask if you can borrow them able to pay off the residue prior to your for the day. Having an offshore wedding was the best idea! Whoever said planning your own wedding is an easy thing to do? Is that beautiful outdoor tent really over $2000.00 to hire? Do I want finger food or a sit down buffet? How many people should we invite? Invites, favours, decorations, location… the options are endless and the total figure just keeps going up – SO, this is where an offshore wedding is just perfect! We got married at the Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa and our Wedding Planner was more than amazing - she was perfect! She was quick to email me back, so patient, calming and accommodating – I couldn’t have put together a more fantastic day without her. I thought organising a wedding via email from another country would be challenging and the day wouldn’t be as great as a New Zealand wedding, but how wrong I was! Everything was fantastic. Whatever your budget, whatever size wedding, a traditional style or small and intimate, all your needs will be catered for in Rarotonga. For such a small island, there isn’t much they can’t get their hands on to make your day your dream one. They understand how important your wedding is -no question too silly, no request too large. 66

Once you know that this is the road you wish to go down, my biggest recommendation is take the stress off yourself and get a Travel Professional to help put together all the travel arrangements and wedding side of things for you. This leaves you free to take care of the fun, exciting things, like dresses, favours, table setting etc. This would be me my biggest regret from my own experiences - taking on not only our wedding and big day, but also a group travel booking - all at the same time! This was very stressful and can be avoided when you have the right help with the right Travel Professional. Just imagine…you don’t just have a Wedding Day, but a Wedding week and for most, a holiday too! We will remember our magical day forever; our photos are fantastic and truly highlight our amazing memories which we will treasure forever. - Sarah Sloan, Rotorua

Fun and Adventure in Rotorua

One of the great things about weddings is that everyone makes an effort to be there. People fly in from all over the world and for many families weddings are the only time when everyone is together in such a joyous occasion. As families grow, this becomes harder and harder, so these times are special – to be treasured forever and, as everyone knows, the time passes far too quickly. Rotorua is a perfect place to create some of these special moments, to turn a wedding into a week long celebration of family and friends – create memories that go beyond the traditional late nights of food and wine when everyone gets together. At Rotorua Canopy Tours we see many groups of families and friends – sometimes four generations at a time getting out and enjoying good old fashioned fun quality time together high in the treetops. But we have also seen some of the other fun things they are all doing together.

70

Here are some examples: · Renting a lake front holiday home at Lake Tarawera for a week · A half day chartered lunch and hot pool cruise on Lake Rotoiti · A big quad bike adventure high into the forests of Mount Ngongataha · Family challenges on the high speed go kart track at Off Road NZ · A float plane excursion to a hidden lake or river lodge for lunch together · A rafting trip to wash away any hangovers! There are many other neat things to do as a family hidden around the district, so get online, start searching and create some of these quality family moments for yourself.

The Dress

75

Some Advice on Bridesmaid Dresses Before you decide what dress is perfect for your bridesmaids, do your homework and consider these things...

Is my budget tight? Yes, then hiring is the way to go. No, your options are open to buy or hire. Do I want to re-sell the dresses afterwards? Yes: be prepared to sell the “off the rack” dresses individually - no wedding party has the same combinations of sizes! Expect to only get a fraction of the cost you paid! No: consider where they might be worn again, check out hire options. Are my bridesmaids standard shapes and sizes? Yes: buying off the rack could work if all sizes needed are stocked. No: hire dresses come in all sizes - from kids to plus sizes. Are all my bridesmaids in the country? Yes: buying is an option, but ensure you have everyone sized at the same time. No: only hiring will give you the peace of mind if you need a last minute size change!

Do I want the bridesmaids colour to match the groomsmen? Yes: beware of buying different fabrics in the same colour - they are never the same colour! Hire options include many different items in the same colour and fabric at a fraction of the cost. No: talk to the wedding specialists about how to coordinate your colours so it all blends in perfectly for your photographs. Do I want to look back on my photographs in 20 years and have people know what decade the wedding was? Yes: buy trendy fashion styles off the rack in the latest season colour or print. No: opt for the classic A-line style that looks good on everyone, and never dates! Specialist stores retail or hire these in many popular colours.

Choosing your Wedding Gown How do you make the right choice for you? The array of wedding gowns makes it a difficult choice for Brides-To-Be when choosing the spectacular “look”. Here are some handy hints to consider when making this crucial decision in line with your fab figure and personal sense of style: HOURGLASS – Flatten your womanly curves with a deep V-neckline, a fitted draped waist and slim A-line skirt; TRIANGULAR – Feel gorgeous in a silk bodice cut with a sweetheart neckline and a full, detailed skirt. For a contemporary look, choose declustered satin cut into a slim V-neck with narrow shoulder straps. Or, if you’re seeking to explore your romantic side, try a flowing wedding dress featuring a softly flared skirt; PEAR SHAPE – Enhance your figure with a detailed, draped bodice featuring a straight neckline and a high waisted slim A-line skirt. For a softer look, choose a wedding dress with gently scooped neckline and a widely set, beaded straps, empire line and flared flowing skirt with chiffon overlay; RECTANGLE – Be feminine with a low scooped neckline, draped waist 78

detail and full skirt; Sweeping, offthe-shoulder necklines highlight your shoulders and collarbones and look great with an empire line and slim cut skirt; APPLE – Create an elongating silhouette with high waistlines and a skirt that flows away from the body. A fitted bodice with corset back will also create a proportioned silhouette. Final thoughts:
Find the right colour for your skin tone: white is not necessarily best, and shades vary from ivory to alabaster. (Remember, you’re not breaking any unwritten laws in not choosing white). Considering a veil? Veils flatter the face and give a Bride an air of mystery and innocence. As a general rule, the more formal the occasion, the longer the veil. The choice of veils and headpieces is endless, so take your time and consider all the options. Whatever your figure, you can look amazing in your wedding dress and show off your fantastic figure. The right style of gown combined with a great cut will make the most of your shape, flatter your body, and make you feel like a million dollars!
