Tēnā koutou katoa I am very pleased to have the opportunity to pen a few words to introduce this publication. It offers a wealth of information about Rotorua as a great wedding or honeymoon destination and about the services on offer here. I am sure it will be particularly helpful for those planning that special big day sometime in the future. I am always delighted to see so many people coming to our city and district across all seasons of the year. They come for a variety of reasons – holidays, sports events, cultural activities and conferences to name a few, and of course weddings and honeymoons. The common theme is that people enjoy our world-class facilities, our living Māori culture, our district’s history, breath-taking scenery and a seemingly endless array of attractions and activities of all types. Rotorua’s great outdoors are something very special. We boast many lakes, spas, geothermal features, The Redwoods forest mountain bike trails and some amazing landscapes - not to mention spine-chilling adrenaline rush activities for the more adventurous. Rotorua has been hosting visitors for centuries and there is no better place in the country to experience the traditions of ‘manaakitanga’ – a unique form of hospitality offered to our guests and visitors. This is the ideal place for a wedding or honeymoon – it’s all here right on our doorstep. If you are visiting this special part of Aotearoa - New Zealand, we extend the warmest of welcomes to you. Haere mai. Haere mai. Haere mai.

Choosing a venue Venue choice is the one of the first significant steps in your wedding planning journey, following on from establishing your wedding date. The calendar of highly sought-after wedding venues (many of which can accommodate your ceremony and reception and in some cases even accommodation requirements), often book 12-18 months in advance. If you have a short-list of desirable properties you’re considering, be sure to visit the property wherever possible and take a list of questions for the venue owner and/or on site wedding coordinator.

Legal Requirements A marriage licence application, referred to as a ‘Notice of Intended Marriage’ BDM 60 can be obtained from a marriage registrar’s office in your area, or online at the Department of Internal Affairs’ website: www.bdm.govt.nz If applying for a marriage licence in Rotorua, the Marriage Registrars are located in the Family Court office, Arawa St (opposite Fat Dog Café). If you’re seeking to marry in Rotorua but live elsewhere, you can apply for your marriage licence in the town/city in which you live. The Legal Requirements for your NZ Ceremony You must be married by a registered wedding celebrant. To find out if a celebrant is formally registered in New Zealand, visit the Births, Deaths, Marriages website: www.bdm.govt.nz You must have a marriage licence to be signed on the day by the bride and groom, two witnesses and the wedding celebrant. You must marry at either of the two places mentioned on your marriage licence application. During the ceremony you must say to each other in some way that you are going to take each other as husband and wife or words to similar effect. The full names of the couple must be used when making their declaration. You must be over the age of 16 years of age. If you are 16-20 year old, you need the signature of your guardian or one of your parents. For details on current cost of licence applications refer to: www.bdm.govt.nz 20

The right choice of dress You’ve found the right partner, now find the right dress! The right style combined with a great cut will make the most of your shape, flatter your body, and make you feel like a million dollars! What body shape are you? These handy hints may help when making your decision in line with your figure and personal style: HOURGLASS – Flatten your curves with a deep V-neckline, a fitted draped waist and slim A-line skirt; TRIANGULAR – Feel gorgeous in a silk bodice cut with a sweetheart neckline and a full, detailed skirt. For a contemporary look, choose satin cut into a slim V-neck with narrow shoulder straps. Or, if you’re seeking to explore your romantic side, try a flowing wedding dress featuring a softly flared skirt; PEAR SHAPE – Enhance your figure with a detailed, draped bodice featuring a straight neckline and a high waisted slim A-line skirt. For a softer look, choose a wedding dress with gently scooped neckline and a widely set, beaded straps, empire line and flared flowing skirt with chiffon overlay; RECTANGLE – Be feminine with a low scooped neckline, draped waist detail and full skirt; Sweeping, off-the-shoulder necklines highlight your shoulders and collarbones and look great with an empire line and slim cut skirt; APPLE – Create an elongating silhouette with high waistlines and a skirt that flows away from the body. A fitted bodice with corset back will also create a proportioned silhouette. Find the right colour for your skin tone - there are various shades of white from ivory to alabaster. Are you considering a veil? Veils flatter the face and give a bride an air of mystery and innocence. Generally, the more formal the occasion, the longer the veil. Take your time and consider all the options. 24
Setting the scene Decor and Music
Your wedding day will be a joyous occasion celebrating your union. The right surroundings, decor and music can make all the difference in making the experience memorable, not only for you but for your guests.

Wet weather advice Venue with an indoor option or a marquee If you plan an outdoor wedding, look for a venue which offers an indoor option on the property in the event of rain. If, however, the ceremony venue doesn’t offer an indoor alternative, ask whether you can erect a marquee on site as the next best thing.
Transport Think about transport. The “short walk” could take on a whole new meaning in rain. Umbrellas are very easy to have in place and there are some really pretty designs to choose from, which could also double as a parasol if the sun comes out.
Hair Rain and hair are NOT best friends! Talk to your hairdresser about making your style as secure as possible for your wedding day and ask them to show your mum or bridesmaid how to recover it if it starts to look a little windswept or frizzy. This may involve emergency supplies of hair spray, and hair straighteners close to hand.
Shoes Consider taking a pair of stylish gumboots (for yourself and your bridesmaids), to add a really fun look to your photos if the heavens open; or perhaps have second pair of shoes for outside, saving your best shoes for indoors. 28
Guests
If it is wet on your wedding day, think about your guests and how they’ll stay dry. Perhaps provide the ushers with a supply of umbrellas to hand out and also ensure that they greet guests at the car where possible to ensure they don’t get drenched on the way in.
Check the weather forecast!
It may be the last thing on your mind, but looking ahead at the weather forecast will help you prepare for even the wettest of weathers. It is better to be safe than sorry, especially when your wedding dress and makeup are at stake!
Go with the flow
Keep things in perspective and enjoy the day as a whole. Whether you are met with showers and storms or glorious sunshine on your wedding day, your day will be perfect no matter what, as long as you’re in the right frame of mind. (A rainy wedding day is actually considered a great thing - in some cultures, rain is good luck and can represent cleansing or stronger unity in the marriage.) Since marriage is often referred to as “tying the knot” consider that a wet knot is harder to untie! The Wedding Guy www.theweddingguy.co.nz

Set the tone Music has the power to set a tone, create atmosphere, and evoke emotion. Traditionally, there are three opportunities within a wedding ceremony where music will feature: the bridal entrance, signing the wedding register and exit music (following the introduction of the newlyweds). The bridal entrance is one of the most important and memorable aspects of a wedding day. Choose according to what resonates most for you whether it’s a “live” performance of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” by a string quartet, or Suzy Quatro’s “Stumbling In” played via iPod – it’s all good. Music is a very personal choice, there are no strict rules to selecting wedding ceremony music. Signing the marriage licence and wedding register - this can take between 5-7 minutes towards the end of the wedding ceremony. It’s the perfect opportunity to have a “live” performance from a talented family member or friend, or a favourite song or instrumental track played while the bride and groom and their witnesses sign the marriage documentation. No rules regarding what you can or can’t choose! The exit tune! Once all signatures have been secured on the marriage licence, it’s time to formally introduce the newlyweds to their guests for the first time as “Mr & Mrs”. The exit tune (in similar fashion to the bride’s entrance) can be a traditional tune or fun and funky statement. Song selections can be as varied as Stevie Wonders “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”, The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony”, or the theme tune to iconic New Zealand TV show “Country Calendar”. Whatever you choose “enjoy the journey as much as the destination”. - Peter Duncan, The Wedding Guy www.theweddingguy.co.nz

Entertainment One of the best investments on your wedding day is your entertainment. It is the chance to relax and have some fun. Make sure your Wedding DJ has “Wedding experience - a club, bar, garage, Rugby function DJ is not a Wedding DJ! A good Wedding DJ will take pride in his appearance and setup, ensuring everything looks immaculate. Ask the DJ to show you pictures of some past wedding setups, and to let you know what you can expect. Professional speakers are expensive. Cheap speakers produce cheap sound and are not reliable. Ask your Wedding DJ what brand of speakers he intends to bring. Examples of quality brands are JBL, QSC, and RCF. Make sure the DJ will play music you and your guests want to hear; a good Wedding DJ will have experience in diverse crowds and know how to cater for all. It is worth noting some DJs refuse to take requests and want total control over the music - will you be happy with that? Equipment will fail at some stage; does the DJ have a backup plan on the night? Make sure the DJ has a signed written contract you both agree to. This will protect you from the DJ bringing the wrong equipment, starting late, finishing early or not turning up at all. If the DJ says a contract is not needed, find another DJ who does! Invest in a professional wedding DJ, and make sure your guests leave with memories of a great wedding. - Joel from Absolute DJs www.absolutedjs.co.nz

Pampering, Make-up & Hair Pre-wedding day pampering can be the ideal solution to deal with the stress of planning your Big Day. You could even make a party of it by setting up a spa pampering party for your bridesmaids instead of going out the day or night before the wedding. There are a number of outstanding Salons in and around Rotorua, as well as mobile Hair & Make-Up Specialists - in either case, ask if you can have a “trial run well before the wedding day.

Flowers A wedding would just not be the same without flowers. Every bride wants her wedding to be memorable and her choice of flowers or arrangements should reflect her specific taste and personality. Her flowers should create a theme to make her wedding day special and provide the finishing touch to this very special day. - Pamela Jenkins, Rotorua Florist www. rotoruaflorists.co.nz

Your Florist They’re one of the oldest wedding traditions and play a big part in personalising your wedding celebration. Incredibly adaptable, flowers help create a mood or theme for your special day. Each bride is unique and so too should be her bridal bouquet! There are many different bouquet styles, colours and types of flowers to choose from. You can also add a personalised touch with different items like sentimental pieces - your grandmother’s necklace, ring etc. Or, how about adding grasses, seedpods, berries or fruit for a point of difference? If you have a favourite flower you’d like in your bouquet or arrangements, check with your florist about flower availability during that time of year. We are blessed in NZ with a great availability of flowers all year round, but there are always some exceptions. Don’t wait until the last minute book your florist well in advance to ensure they can secure beautiful, fresh flowers for your special day, A good florist will meet with you in person to get a good feel of your expectations and style - they should ask you about your dress colour and style and it can really help if you can supply a picture. In that way the florist can suggest a style that would best suit your type of dress and reflect your personality, They should be able to guide you in flower type and colour choice to complement your vision. While the bridal bouquet can be the main focus, flowers can really tie in a theme for the entire day. Flowers for the bridesmaids, buttonholes for the groom and groomsmen, boutonnières for the ladies, flowers for the hair or cake, table arrangements, church arrangements etc. - nearly anything is possible, just talk to your florist and they will come up with some great ideas!

Videography &Photography Remember - your wedding day images will record one of most significant occasions in your life, so the decision you make when choosing your photographer and or videographer is an important one. Don’t leave it too late as popular photographers are booked well into the next wedding season!

Choosing a Photographer Spending on a professional photographer is not so much an expense but an investment. Photographs and memories are all you will have to cherish. It’s important to select someone you feel comfortable with and whose style of photography you relate to. Make sure to discuss the timing of the whole day with your photographer so you’re both aware of whether there is enough time for the amount of images you would like to be taken. Questions to ask your prospective photographer: - Ask to see albums of weddings they have photographed. - Are they a qualified member of a registered organisation (e.g. the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers)? If things don’t go to plan, it gives you an organisation to fall back on for complaints etc. - What packages do they offer: full day, half day or hourly rate? - Do they provide digital negatives and at what cost? - What ideas do they have for photography locations? - Do they have two sets of equipment in case one breaks down? - Do they have a contract or some type of guarantee? - Are they happy for guests to take photographs at the same time? - Do they have a studio or some alternative for wet weather? - Do they have options for one photographer or two? - Do they have options for you to make instalment payments? - Do they offer albums and books, CDs DVDs enlargements etc.? - Are they GST registered? - How long after the day until you see the proofs? Create something memorable you will cherish forever. 48

Catering for your big day Find a caterer who will create the perfect menu at the right price for you. Catering and refreshments will depend on the venue and type of reception you’ve decided on. Many venues, if they don’t cater in-house, will most often have a list of recommended caterers. Your caterer will need to know the date, time of reception, number of guests, level of hospitality you wish to provide and your limit on charges per head to supply you with ideas and accurate quotations. Costs are usually quoted per ‘head’ (guest). Always ask for quotes and confirmation of everything in writing!

Transport &Travel You’ve booked your wedding venue, wedding accommodation, found the dress, the celebrant, the stationery, now it’s time to concentrate on your wedding arrival and departure. If you’re having an overseas wedding or honeymoon, there are travel companies waiting to hear how they can assist you to create your dream come true. They have a wealth of knowledge and advice on how to make it happen.
60
Planning your transport The sooner the better. It’s amazing how many couples marry on the same day in the “wedding season”. Transport is often the groom or best man’s responsibility, so keep on their case as these decisions are important and usually left to the last. There are many options available but your budget determines the end result. Whatever transport you decide on, remember the weather, think about a back-up plan if hiring a horse & carriage, or even a helicopter! The most economical could be found within your family/friends circles - who has similar vehicles in make, model and colour? Ask if you can borrow their vehicles for the day - often they will even offer to drive. It may cost you a few petrol vouchers to show your appreciation. You can decorate the cars yourself and of course a good, clean, shiny vehicle inside and out is essential - don’t be afraid to emphasise this point as it is really important! If you do choose a limousine, choose a company that is fully insured and registered as a commercial vehicle. This protects you should there be an accident on the day (of course no one wants to see this happen). Some vehicles are not easy to disembark from elegantly - especially with a full wedding dress - so ask to view the transport that you are keen on before paying any deposits. Also ask if you are able to pay off the residue prior to your wedding day: this option can certainly help with an already stretched wedding budget. The cost will be dependent on how long you hire the limousine for one hour minimum, and generally up to 3 or 4 hours is sufficient. (If the ceremony, photos and reception are all at different locations, do check with your photographer as to how long they think is needed.) - Anne Norton, Xquizit Limousines www.xquizit.co.nz

Finance Begin your wedded life on the right foot. Consider consulting a professional about things that may seem unimportant right now (creating a will, power of attorney documents, mortgage and life insurance) but which will prove invaluable at a later date.

Last minute tips Check in with your vendors and settle any final payments - if you pay them ahead of time, you don’t need to remember who is owed what on the day. Drop your luggage off early if you’re staying overnight after the reception. Discuss with your photographer who you’d like to have photographed together beforehand. Entrust your legal documents to someone responsible after signing them so they don’t get lost. Pack an emergency kit: bobby pins, hair spray, face powder, lip gloss, lipstick, heel-stoppers, panty hose, an umbrella and shawl, tissues, backup copies of music and white chalk to cover up marks on your dress.
