PAIGE FOLKEN design mission To me, design is a meticulous work of art expressed to allow users of each space to thrive and improve their everyday life. My substantial passion for design allows me to accept new opportunities and challenges with gratitude and excitement. Upon graduation this coming May, I look forward to entering the hospitality design industry. My education at Kirkwood has assisted in preparing me to succeed in any design role that best suits me and the skills I have obtained. Throughout my student design experience, I have worked on a wide range of design studio projects including: Corporate, Residential, Education, Hospitality, and Healthcare. I am grateful for the growth and knowledge gained in each project.

CONCEPTUALITY Inspiration for this project is derived from the techniques of creating terra cotta. The physicians are the artists that scuplt the patients to be strong and unique. The rich characteristics create a warm sense of relaxation, while still incorporating an accented element of color. The contrast between grounded neutrals and earthy deep tones will be balanced by biophilia and carefully selected furnishings. Influenced by Norwegian and Scandinavian design, organic shapes in architecture and FF&Es will soften the space.

A monochromatic color palette gives a more relaxing, earthy feel, perfect for a healthcare space. Pairing complimentary hues and values together to create a sense of balance and cohesiveness.

23

BIOPHILIC DESIGN Healthcare facilities require a space where patients feel comfortable and safe. Biophilic design has transformed the healthcare industry tremendously. Bringing the outdoors in creates a sense of relaxation and safety by incorporating a variety of plants and greenery throughout the space in existing architecture. In addition to the impact biophilic design has on patients, it also creates a nice workplace environment for staff.

Incorporating the organic shapes of our concept into the reception desk helps it feel approachable. Applying various materials give the custom piece visual interest and results in a cohesive look throughout the rest of the space. Repitition of finishes is important for each space to feel included in the desired aesthetic.

30 As a solution for the surrounding curtain walls effect of natural light, exterior solar control panels are designed to automatically position effectively throughout the day. In addition to the exterior solution, interior shades are available to manually draw as needed for privacy or visual comfort. The shades selected provide glare protection and visual privacy from the exterior, without limiting natural light access.

9:00 AM The interior solar solutions can be pulled to the full length of the window to maximize shade. The exterior shading panels are automatically placed at a 135 degree angle.

1:00 PM The interior solar solutions can be adjusted to permit or resist sunlight. The exterior shading panels are automatically placed at a 110 degree angle.

5:00 PM The interior solar solutions can be opened completely to allow indirect sunlight into the space. The exterior shading panels are automatically placed at a 75 degree angle.

The Graduate, 1967, is a story of a love affair between recent graduate Ben, and bored housewife Mrs. Robinson. What started as a fun summer fling turns complicated when Ben falls in love with the one woman Mrs. Robinson demanded he stay away from, her daughter, Elaine. The classic movie is famously known for it’s iconic mid century interiors. Key aesthetic elements include extravagant plants, black and white tile, and neutral patterned textiles.

conceptual images

Inspiration derived from the 1967’s movie “The Graduate”, materials and architecture take a mid century approach. Pulling neutral finishes including wood tones and patterned textiles balance out the bold black and white selections. Incorporating these finishes repetitively throughout the space creates a successfully cohesive aesthetic. Plants are placed throughout to replicate the look Mrs. Robinson has in her windows.

TEND TO STUDENT DIVERSITY Create accessible working environments that can be effective for everyone. Take into account different productivity habits when designing.

PRIORITIZE THE PRIVACY OF FACULTY Isolate faculty offices and hub to create a private and comfortable environment.

INCORPORATE COLLABORATIVE SPACES Encourage active ineraction among the students and faculty throughout the space by providing functional space planning.

63

GROWTH As the students of NEXT University are aspiring to grow, they are in need of a space to provide both collaborative and private learning opportunities. Inspiration is derived from the United States Botanic Garden, found locally in Washington D.C. Pulling colors and textures from various plants and flowers creates a fun learning opportunity for the students. Both students and plants need room for growth as well as a healthy and safe environment. In order to grow, students need to be nurtured, as well as plants. The design intent for NEXT University is to create a space for students to successfully grow into who they want to be.
