PROJECT OVERVIEW There is a proposed ENT Clinic coming to the top level of an existing building in Scottsdale, Arizona. The majority of this project will be focused on the Audiology and Allergy departments of ENT. In search of more information, we toured a local ENT facility to gain knowledge and perspective.

5

WHAT IS ENT HEALTHCARE? ENT is a healthcare clinic, specializing in audiology and allergy practices, ages ranging from infant to elderly. ENT specialists treat conditions including ear infection, hearing loss and impairment, dizziness, ear, face, or neck pain, etc. In regards to allergy-like symptoms, ENT specialists treat sore throat, hoarseness, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), infections, throat tumors, airway and vocal cord disorders, etc.

OUR RESEARCH We toured a local ENT clinic before beginning this project, to be prepared and put together a design solution for our project. We talked to several employees with different jobs, to gain multiple perspectives. The manager proposed minimal cooridors to promote easy wayfinding. The nurses opened up about wanting less exposure to patients at the nurse’s station. The administrative staff would like a comfortable work environment and natural light.

“I like to say that ENT specialists treat pretty much everything from the collarbone up, except for the brain and eyes. So much of this work, medical and surgical, affects how people perceive themselves as human beings, and it is a unique privilege to care for my patient’s ENT health due to the personal and profound nature of this specialty.” - WILLIAM R. BLYTHE, MD

6

CONCEPTUALITY Inspiration for this project is derived from the techniques of creating terra cotta. The physicians are the artists that scuplt the patients to be strong and unique. The rich characteristics create a warm sense of relaxation, while still incorporating an accented element of color. The contrast between grounded neutrals and earthy deep tones will be balanced by biophilia and carefully selected furnishings. Influenced by Norweigan and Scandinavian design, organic shapes in architecture and FF&Es will soften the space.

7

MONOCHROMATIC COLOR PALETTE A monochromatic color palette gives a more relaxing, earthy feel, perfect for a healthcare space. Pairing complimentary hues and values together to create a sense of balance and cohesiveness.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN Healthcare facilities require a space where patients feel comfortable and safe. Biophilic design has transformed the healthcare industry tremendously. Bringing the outdoors in creates a sense of relaxation and safety. Incorporating a variety of plants and greenery throughout the space in existing architecture. In addition to the impact biophilic design has on patients, it also creates a nice workplace environment for staff.

CUSTOM RECEPTION DESK

10

11

NATURAL LIGHT ACCESS As designed, the exam rooms are in the perimeter of the space, allowing natural light into those spaces. We had to come up with a design solution to access that sunlight in the corridors. The design solution resulted in an architecturally interesting facade, as well as a successful approach to allowing natural light.

12

SOLAR CONTROL DIAGRAM 9:00 AM The interior solar solutions can be pulled to the full length of the window to maximize shade. The exterior shading panels are automatically placed to a 135 degree.

1:00 PM The interior solar solutions can be adjusted to permit or resist sunlight. The exterior shading panels are automatically placed to a 110 degree.

5:00 PM The interior solar solutions can be opened completely to allow indirect sunlight into the space. The exterior shading panels are automatically placed to a 75 degree.

17

RECEPTION The reception desk accomodates 3 employees, with desk height on either sides and an ADA counter in the center. Patients will check in for their appointments here, and then head to the waiting area. On either sides of the desk, are two doors: the left for Audiology appointments, and the right for Allergy.

18

RECEPTION

19

WAITING The waiting area provides a comfortable space for patients to wait for their appointment. Typical appointments last between 10-30 minutes, therefore there isn’t much of a long wait. Incorporating various seating options allow the patients to be comfortable. Surrounding curtain walls allow natural light to flood into the space, and expose the patio.

20

WAITING

21

22

SELF SERVE CAFE The purpose of inplementing a self-serve cafe counter is for patients to experience joy during their visit. A quick coffee might improve their experience and feel more relaxed going into their appointment. In addition, it keeps guests occupied if accompanying the patient.

23

SELF SERVE CAFE

24

CORRIDORS Our research showed us that there are often confusing routes for patients to get to their appointment, and our intent was to come up with a design solution. Because the exam rooms make up the perimeter of the building, there is 2 patient hallways to accomodate for allergy and audiology appointments. The furtherst east hallway is for staff only. In addition, there is a center cooridor to access the center rooms.

26

27

AUDIO BOOTHS Audio booths are intended to test hearing in patients. The room requires a closed off acoustically accurate space for the patient to be tested. Our research showed us that Audio booths often have a desk and monitor on the outside for staff to observe.

30

EXAM ROOMS Exam rooms require the neccessary medical equiptment, including an otoscope, patient chair, storage, and a sink. We incorporated our concept through materiality and ceiling design.

31

EXAM ROOMS

32

NURSES’ STATION The two nurses’ stations are adjacent to the spa and exam rooms, but facing the offices to reduce patient interaction. The break room and work room are on either sides of the nurses’ stations.

33

34

BREAK ROOM The break room has a kitchen and seating for staff to enjoy their meals. In attempt to encourage interation between staff, we opened up the break room to the staff cooridor.

38

SPA A majority of ENT clinics are expanding to spa services, such as laser hair removal, botox, and other cosmetic services. This is a major adjaceny to the nurses’ stations.

PHYSICIANS’ OFFICES The physicians’ offices are located on the north wall, with the least adjacencies to increase privacy. Each of them has a full curtain wall to maximize natural light.

SUB WAITING The subway waiting area is designed for Allergy patients to sit and wait for results. Adjacent to the Allergy exam rooms, it is easily accessible.
