It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our very special 1st birthday edition. Yes that's right, we are officially one year old. What a year and what an adventure. This magazine was born out of my passion for the entertainment industry and my desire to find a way to promote and support family entertainment events for the benefit of the local community and also the businesses involved. Thankfully it is slowly working and more and more venues and events are happening. I have a lot of people to thank because bringing Pak MaG to fruition has been a huge team effort. Of course, Pak MaG couldn't have happened without the small team of dedicated people who work with me but importantly, Pak MaG's success is also reliant upon our readers and also our advertisers who have committed to enabling this community publication to serve you. So, please thank them on our behalf by spending your money with them and make sure you tell them you love our magazine! Come along to our huge birthday party on 28th June at the Esplanade and enjoy a piece of cake with us. Until next time, have a fantastic time with your kids over the holidays, we hope you enjoy our Big Fat Holiday Guide and don't forget to tell everyone, you read it in PaK MaG. Bree

Daddy Diary Entry # Thirteen I've been spending a bit of time with my good mate 'Google' lately. What an amazing piece of work that is. If you have access to the Internet you never, ever, ever have to wonder about anything ever again. Google is what the Wizard of Oz was supposed to be, a path to infinite wisdom. It's like a backstage pass and an intimate audience with the keeper of the knowledge without having to traipse a yellow brick road wearing ruby slippers and towing a dog called Toto. One of the best tools ever! Yep, even better than a Stillson pipe wrench. Within minutes I've learned how to fillet a fish, bake biscotti, identify snakes and this is where it comes in really handy, research Summer stuff. Here's some words I've punched into my friend, or should I say our friend, Google. 'Toddler Facial Trauma'. That was when Summer fell out of the house. A four foot drop face first onto brick pavers. 'Daughters Sleeping Patterns Suck!' Pretty self-explanatory. 'Do You Know The Whereabouts of My Wife's Libido?'. Same again. But my most recent query involved children's obsessions. For some kids it's Barbie or Batman or Dinosaurs or Dirt Bikes. For Summer at the moment it's 'Hairy MacLary from Donaldson's Dairy'. Book and video are both on high rotation in our household. The books been thumbed more times than a lads mag in a truckies tearoom. And the other obsession is the game of Hide and Seek. Not with people but objects. Summer hides it; we eventually find it. Found the bath plug in the fridge, a bottle of Mt Franklin in the toilet, the TV remote in the dog food, my car keys in the Milo and a chopstick in a milk container… that was in the oven. What I can gather from my mate Google is that obsessions with hiding stuff, panting puppies called Hairy MacLary or anything else ain't such a bad thing. It's good for our kids to be passionate about stuff. It's great for learning and growth and these early little obsessions help them focus on detail. I look forward to knowing more about trains, superheroes, frogs, planets, horses etc than I ever thought I'd want to. I hope Summer never stops asking questions and I hope Google never stops answering them. Luv Dave P.S The Great Wall of China was never about keeping out rabbits… it was about keeping dinosaurs in.

Home Loans and Savings Tips with Toby Sciacca
ORGANISE OR RE-ORGANISE HI - The most important job at hand in these times is to organise your money matters. Last month I talked about how to “SAIL THROUGH THE RATE RISES” I hope you took some of the TIPS. I know my staff in “The Conveyance Shop” ALL took the advice and they are amazed at HOW much they are saving each week. We don't' need an MBA from Harvard to know that we need more money to come in than is going out to be sure that we survive these tough times. I've got a Four Wheel Drive Diesel which now costs $240.00 to fill up used to be $90.00 about 5 years ago. Rhonda and I now go to work in one car at least 4 days a week Saves about $40.00 per week - $2000.00 per year All we have done is ORGANISE ourselves. Look at your Loan TERMS. Do you have a Loan that allows you to deposit your wages/salary and has a Redraw Facility? Without exorbitant interest? What about an OFFSET account to achieve the same result?
IS YOUR BUDGET GETTING TIGHT? Sometimes for one reason or another having to find that monthly payment of Principal AND Interest can now be a problem. If your Bank won't let you SWITCH TO INTEREST ONLY for a couple of years, there are some Banks who have a good Product to let you do this eg. 1% below the average Standard Variable Rate with Interest for Only 2 years SO DON'T STRESS OUT when you DON'T NEED TO. The average monthly instalments can be reduced by up to $200 per month or more while you sort yourselves out. TELEMARKETING OF LOANS IS ILLEGAL THEY ARE AT IT AGAIN! We see the sad results of these “SOUTHERN SPRUKERS” who will tell you that they can save you money by Consolidating and Refinancing your debts and Loans. Usually the “Lender” on the paperwork is not the actual Lender. I AM not saying that Consolidating Loans is not a good idea - sometimes it is, BUT always have a face to face talk to a Professional Broker who has all the necessary qualifications.

WHAT IT'S REALLY LIKE TO ........‌‌.. By Elaine Seager
FEED SHARKS
Even though it's criticised as a practice, there are still dive operators in Cairns who regularly make the long trip out to the Coral Sea to enable adventurous tourists to experience a shark feed. For divers, this is the ultimate experience, the chance to watch these magnificent creatures in action at close range. We spoke to some local exdive supervisors who have worked on these trips. How do the shark feeds work? The location where we feed the sharks is on a reef outside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It's a long way out with very deep drop-offs and as soon as the boat arrives at the dive site the sharks start to mill around the boat. As you get in the water the ocean disappears below you and it's eerily peaceful, only interrupted by the sharks gliding by. We don't feed the sharks by hand so we thread big frozen tuna heads on a big chain and once all the divers are safely arranged in the water we lower the chain in. Immediately several sharks come darting in at speed from all directions and the chain turns in to a swirling ball of sharks as the feeding frenzy begins. It's a matter of seconds before the tuna heads are gone.
Does it worry you that the sharks behave differently as a result of humans feeding them in this way? Yes, it's just like with any wild animals, they change because they come to expect the food, but feeding them is better than killing them for their fins to make soup! (Shark fin is allowed to be imported in to Australia). A shark feed is an amazing experience and most tourists who take this trip are more likely to be enthralled by sharks and want them protected. To help stop shark fishing on the Great Barrier Reef go to www.amcs.org.au.
How many and what type of sharks are there? Usually around 15-20 sharks including white and black tip reef sharks, grey whalers and oceanic silver tips. The largest can be up to 7-8 feet long. Do the sharks ever behave aggressively towards the divers? No. The sharks are excited by the frenzy for food but they're not aggressive and we've never been seriously concerned about them threatening us. Sharks are amazing creatures as dive professionals we have nothing but respect and admiration for them. Most shark attacks on humans are a result of curiosity or mistaken identity because they use taste to find out what things are (just like babies!). That's how they investigate things, it's just unfortunate they have big sharp teeth!. As the recent Sharkwater movie said, most attacks are simply 'shark mistakes'.

Common Sense Time Savers For Busy Parents By D.G. Conti
Do working parents have time for themselves anymore? Busy couples can easily fall into time wasting patterns. But shaving off just twenty minutes of chores per day adds up to more than two hours of extra time each week. Break the cycle and try these common sense approaches to save time on your household chores. Grocery Shopping Stop going to the grocery store every day. Shopping piecemeal is a huge waste of time. Plan seven days of meals, make a list, and get in the habit of shopping once per week. Also, many supermarkets now have inexpensive grocery delivery with an easy online ordering system. Oh, The Filing. Piles of paperwork waiting to be filed or shredded can create stress, clutter and lost time. This time-consuming and tedious task can be easily streamlined. The key is to stop filing the old-fashioned way-with each topic in a separate file. Make twelve files, one for each month of the year; every paid bill is put into that month's file. Pay online, and then throw the whole batch of paperwork into a single file. Laundry Woes. Washing and drying several loads of laundry each week can eat up hours of your time. But what is the alternative? Paying a laundry service is the ideal solution but too costly for many families. Try this time-saver: buy each person ten pair of socks for daily wear and two washable mesh laundry bags to keep in their rooms. Clean socks go in one bag, dirty in the other. When the clean bags are empty, wash the bags with the soiled socks and give them back. The dirty bag becomes the clean bag and viceversa. No more sorting, mixing and lost socks.
Fill Up The Tank. Fill your tank completely every time you fuel up. Saving three or four trips to the petrol station every month saves time. Write it Down! Don't underestimate the power of a "To Do" list. Just the task of writing things down often helps to keep them in mind. The list should stay with you, in a wallet or in the car. While running one errand, look at the list and determine what else can be accomplished then. Three trips will turn into one trip. Every week make a list and check off the accomplishments or items you have delegated. Multi-Task. When possible, accomplish two things at once. Fold laundry while on the phone; clean the bathroom while the kids are in the tub; take the dishes straight from the dishwasher and set the dinner table. There are plenty of chores that can be done simultaneously. With some forethought, one task accomplishes two goals. Delegate Chores. Busy parents often forget, or just don't bother, to assign kids specific chores. Children of all ages should have some responsibility in the home. Picking up toys, carrying their laundry to the correct bins and carrying dishes to the sink. Older children can set the table, vacuum, take out the garbage, unload the dishwasher, and at some point should be responsible for their own laundry. Make a chart of chores with dates to check off when the task is completed. Give them a deadline-all weekly chores must be done by Saturday at 3 p.m. for example. Every chore the kids complete is one less you have to do.
Learn To Pay Bills Online. Most banks will help their customers set up secure online accounts. Then, one click and each bill is paid. No more shopping for stamps and writing dozens of cheques every month.

Pak Health By Chiropractic Works
Why Chiropractic? My Back Doesn't hurt! Traditionally people have thought of visiting a chiropractor when they have back or neck pain and whilst it is true patients enjoy great relief from the above mentioned ailments, many people don't realise that as well as specialising in back pain, neck pain & headaches, Chiropractic can help with many other conditions. Conditions such as diabetes, obesity & osteoporosis are increasing in their prevalence each year and have a large social and financial burden on society. While Chiropractic cannot cure these conditions, it can decrease or alleviate some of the symptoms that are associated.
-
Spinal care & lifestyle changes can markedly reduce the risk of osteoporosis & osteoporosis related incidents.
While there are a multitude of factors necessary to achieving optimal health, it is important to have a clear connection between your brain, spinal cord & the rest of your body - Chiropractic can help achieve this. Please call Chiropractic Works on 4031 3388 for your appointment today with one of our professional chiropractors.
For example: -
Obese patients can benefit from Chiropractic through improved biomechanics thus lessening strain on the spine, bones & joints. Specific spinal friendly exercises can be prescribed aiding weight loss while maintaining postural & spinal integrity.

Look like a star wherever you are‌ DRESSING YOUR ONE YEAR OLD FOR THEIR FIRST BIRTHDAY Turning one is a significant milestone in a child's life (although probably more so for the parents who are relieved they made it this far!). The first birthday marks the end of being a baby, and the beginning of being a toddler. In celebration of our own first birthday, we've come up with some great ways to make your little one year old look like the trendiest toddler on the block! Here are some suggestions: * * *
Groovy clothes are a must - they don't have to be expensive, ask around for some hand-me-downs. Use some glitter or little face stickers. Add some funky accessories hats, belts, groovy shoes, a bandanna, bangles or a necklace.
If your toddler doesn't want to look groovy there's always the option of a face-painted tiger or cat to fall back on! However you dress them up, don't forget to take lots of pictures of your gorgeous toddler to show all the 'rellies' and to help you remember just how cute they are further down the track.
24 2 52
BOYS:
GIRLS:
As demonstrated by our groovy model James, we have opted for a fashionable David Beckham look by spiking his hair up. You can do this using some gel in the palm of your hands, or if you just want a temporary effect, use a little water (it just won't hold as well as gel). Pop on a cool little outfit and a pair of sunnies and get ready to receive comments on how cute he is!
With girls it's easy to find lots of decorative things to dress up their hair although it might only stay in for a few minutes! On Hannah we've used brightly coloured hair clips to hold back bits of her hair. Of course, you can also get inventive with their hairstyle or add hair glitter. Cute sunnies complete the outfit.

THE TOTALLY AMAZING, IN CREDIBLE, FANTASTIC A Last edition: “We haven't let anyone down yet and we're not gonna start now!” said Bree as the Bopper trio, along with Wally and Sally, began to explore the ocean's depths, searching for this unexplained noise. Bree began to wonder what the noise might be: 'Is it really an alien as Trent predicted in his nightmares or was it something else, something more sinister?' Only time would tell because Bree knew that they only had a few hours left until dark. They needed to search……Quickly!

AND THE BOPPERS!!
“It must have some kind of special powers!” cried Trent, confused as to why it hadn't affected the Boppers. “Whatever it is, we'd better be careful and put our Super Special Gas-filled Goggles on, so that we don't get affected by the light rays” announced Bree. She was also puzzled as to why it hadn't affected the trio. “Let's go to that bommie (bombora) over there and see if we can get a better look at what is shining those lights.” said Eleese.
Swimming from reef to reef, the group of 5 ventured hours north along the Great Barrier Reef and as they swam further and further away from their pontoon, they could hear the sound getting louder and louder. “Do you think we are close?” asked Eleese, as her legs began to weaken from the hours of 'flippering'. Just as Bree was about to reply, a huge light could be seen in the distance. “There it is!” exclaimed Wally. “It's soooo beautiful” said Sally as she wandered closer to the mesmerising lights. Wally too, seemed to be in a trance as he swam towards the lights too fast for the Boppers to keep up. With a few quick flicks of Wally's tail and Sally's flippers, both were out of sight, leaving the Bopper trio alone in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef.
All three Boppers crept up behind the bommie that looked as though it had been damaged by something. Something big. “Have you noticed anything strange? Really, really strange?” asked Trent. “I haven't seen one single fish for about half an hour!” The look of realisation dawned upon the faces of both Eleese and Bree. It was true. Other than Wally and Sally, who had suddenly left in a daze, they had not seen a single fish, octopus, shark or coral polyp in a while. What could it be that was drawing the fish away, or worse, KILLING them? The Bopper trio had to find out….and FAST. What was disrupting the reef? People? Aliens? Whatever it was, the Bopstars were going to find out! To Be Continued…

PaK Animals Facts SE RVALS
Servals (Felinae serval) have the largest ears and longest legs in relation to the size of their body of any cat. Their fur is yellow, gold to reddish with black spots that often merge to form stripes on the neck and back. Their ears have horizontal stripes. The stomach is usually a lighter color than the rest of the body. They have a long neck and a small head. Servals live in well-watered grasslands of Africa. Their habitat overlaps with the caracal who usually preys on larger animals. The serval cat mainly eats hares, ground squirrels, hyraxes, and mole rats, but will also prey on frogs, snakes, lizards, insects, fish, and birds. They listen for their rodent prey. Once they have a position fixed on the animal, they leap with all four feet off the ground and pounce on the prey. Their success rate of pounces is 50%. Most other cats’ success rate is only 10%. In length, serval cats are about 2 to 3 1/4 feet. Their tails are ¾ to 1 ½ feet long. At the shoulder they stand 1 1/3 to 2 feet tall. Weight ranges from 17.5 to 40 pounds. To call other servals, servals have a high-pitched cry. Like other cats, they snarl, growl and spit when angry. Contented servals purr. 1 to 3 kittens are born per litter, although sometimes as many as 5 are born. They weigh about 9 ounces each. Kittens are born with their eyes closed, but they open in 9 to 12 days. They reach independence at about 6-8 months, but will stay in their mother’s range until they reach sexual maturity at 18 to 24 months. The main threats to servals are hyenas, leopards, dogs, and man. Sometimes they are hunted for their pelts which are passed off as immature leopard pelts.
Fun Serval Cat Facts - Serval cats are diurnal or nocturnal depending on the habits of the prey where they live. - The name serval is derived from a Portuguese word which means wolf-deer. - The serval’s hind legs are longer than the front ones. - A serval can leap in the air to catch birds. 36

Pak Vaccine or Venom?
By Elaine Seager
No parent likes taking young children along for immunisations but most consider it a necessary evil to prevent their children from being at risk of contracting some very serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Despite this, the debate about whether to vaccinate or not continues. Information on the subject is either vehemently pro-immunisations (ie. the medical community) or vehemently against it (Australian Vaccination Network). At the end of the day we all want what's best for our children so how easy is it to make an informed choice about immunisation? The short answer is: difficult. On the one hand the medical community quote supposedly reliable research which is usually funded and undertaken by the pharmaceutical companies themselves. At the opposite extreme, reading information from the AVN about the harm you are causing your child is enough to scare any parent witless. Honest and balanced information to help parents make an informed choice seems hard to come by but we attempted to find our way through the maze on these three questions: I had chicken pox as a kid and I'm ok. Why do children now have to be immunised against it? Officially it's because there were always complicated cases requiring hospitalisation even though most make a full recovery. Unofficially it saves money less hospitalisations, less prescriptions and less time off work! What is the current status on the MMR/autism link? In the 10 years since the first claims were made of a link there has been no evidence to prove it. Many studies have been undertaken and the medical community now seems convinced that there is sufficiently valid evidence to disprove
the link. Meanwhile, some legal cases against the vaccine manufacturers in the US have successfully gained agreement that the MMR may have aggravated a prior condition which led to autism. There is still a question mark about whether certain children may be more predisposed eg. due to an immune impairment, so it seems the debate will continue until a concrete explanation is found for the rise in autism. What are my options? As the parent you can decide whether or not to vaccinate. There is no other alternative to having an immunisation apart from having the disease itself. Homeopathy is often cited but no homeopath will claim to be able to vaccinate your child. Homeopathy may have benefits in terms of reducing susceptibility to illness generally but it won't prevent them getting it. Then again, whilst most of the community is vaccinated your child is probably less likely to be exposed to these illnesses anyway! Despite its detractors most people are glad that we don't have to worry about these particular major diseases. Every parent should make their own informed decision but, for now, the majority will continue to vaccinate. At the very least, make sure your child is 100% well on the day they get their immune system bombarded!

TODDLER BOREDOM BUSTERS By Elaine Seager As your baby turns in to a toddler it's the start of a new phase which presents a whole lot of new challenges. Suddenly they need entertaining and you barely have a moment to yourself. So if your curious toddler is driving you crazy, here are a few ways to keep them entertained: 1) One of the great things about toddlers is that they just love doing anything that you're doing including the housework. Their quality of work may not be quite up to scratch but don't let that put you off. Give them a cloth to wipe tables and surfaces and when you're trying to sweep the floors, give them an extra brush. 2) Patio looking a bit dirty? Time to get the toddler working, get a bowl of soapy water (bubbles!) and let them get in to it with a brush. 3) Trying to get dinner ready? There's little point resisting when your toddler is trying to climb up your legs to see what you're doing. Make life easy - put the chopping board on the floor, let them watch you chop the vegetables and even give them the job of putting the veggies in the saucepan. Some will be eaten or dropped, of course, but in the meantime they feel very happily involved.
4) Give them the job of sorting out coloured clothes from whites and then let them stuff them in the washing machine. Great fun. Then they can hand you pegs as you hang them out to dry. 5) Make homemade play dough and use biscuit cutters, a garlic press and rolling pin 6) Donate some potatoes to their creative expression. Cut the potatoes in half, cut shapes in to them and let your toddler loose on some paints. Messy but fun. 7) Put a rug or sheet on the floor and have a picnic 8) Make a tent with a sheet draped over two chairs for impromptu camping 9) Get arty - Make a card for Daddy or what about a little handy hints poster for the bathroom (ie. Wipe, flush, wash!) 10)Create a pretend shop all you need is a couple of old shopping bags (paper ones are good), a calculator and some tins of stuff out of the cupboard plus any toy food you might have. It's a good idea to collect things for this purpose rather than throwing them away.
Feeding Time at the Zoo! Hints and Recipes for Toddlers and Kids Quick and Easy, Last Minute Ideas Fruit and cheese platters (cubed cheese, dried fruit, grapes, fresh fruit pieces) Scrambled eggs (cook in microwave with some cheese, easy and good for them) Spaghetti or Baked Beans on toast (very easy, nutritious and kids love it)
Corn thins with toppings (cream cheese, vege butter, vegemite, nut butter etc.) Vege Butter on toast or crackers or corn thins (Make it by blending roasted pumpkin, sweet potato, potato etc.)
Vegie fingers and dips (try carrot, celery and cucumber sticks with hommus, white bean dip etc.)
Potato gems/ chicken nuggets or fish fingers (easy ideas when you are too tired/ busy to cook...)
Little tins of corn kernels or peas or cold baked beans (keeps them amused as they eat them one by one)
Frozen Vege “Lollies (try the diced corn/ peas/ carrot mix; nutritious and some kids love it this way and think they are 'lollies'!)

KEEPING BABIES SAFE By Elaine Seager Keeping children safe as they become curious about exploring their environment can be a challenge and usually means having to always be one step ahead of them. Initially it can be stressful but it becomes a lot easier if you can child proof your house ahead of time so they can have the run of the place without being in any serious danger. The trick is to make your house child proof without removing all the fun. The two key danger areas in the home are the kitchen and bathroom. Before you do anything else you will need to establish a very secure and unreachable poisons cupboard. The more possible dangers you remove upfront the greater your peace of mind. Once you've established a poisons cupboard the next job is to lock away other potential dangers so here are some tips for getting you started: -
Put safety latches on all doors and cupboards containing potentially dangerous items (but leave at least one cupboard safe for exploring, for example, the one where you keep plastic ware)
THIS MONTHS HOT PRODUCT With the help of Howards Storage World we are offering one lucky reader a Dreambaby Home Safety Essentials Pack that includes 46 pieces including various types of safety catches, outlet plugs and door knob covers (retail price $29.95).
TO WIN... Email us a your “Tip of the Month to info@pakmag.com.au and you could be the winner of this fantastic prize!
TIP OF THE MONTH
-
Always use the backburners on the cooker and make sure the handles always point away from the front
Newborn babies should only be awake for an hour at a time.
-
Lock drawers containing sharp utensils (but let them get to the wooden spoons and other 'toys')
-
Tuck away the electrical cords of your appliances so they can't be yanked on
Be consistent with your settling technique even if it doesn't seem to be working. Bubs will eventually learn to associate it with sleep and it will then act as a trigger for them to fall asleep.
-
Never pass hot liquids over the top of children
-
Keep the toilet doors shut/locked at all times (God knows, they find any water irresistible!)
-
Keep all your shampoos, toothpaste, cosmetics locked away or on high shelves

Focus on a Fundraiser Every month Pak Mag would like to help our Not For Profit Organisations by promoting to our readers what they do, who they help and how you can help them. Often these organisations have very limited government funding and rely heavily on volunteers and donations to keep their service going.
Thanks to all the PaK MaG readers who helped us raise funds for the Give Me Five For Kids Campaign. There was a great turn-out to the Teddy Bear's Picnic, with over 300 bears entered for the parade, and hopefully some of you will even have seen us on the Channel 7 News! The Give Me Five For Kids concept was developed in 1998 on the Central Coast, born from comments from radio listeners suggesting that even loose change could make a difference in fundraising, especially for local hospitals. The fundraiser's success encouraged Macquarie Southern Cross Media to implement the initiative across its national network. However, instead of funds being dispersed throughout the country, as is the case with many national appeals, the money is used to purchase pieces of equipment asked for or suggested by the nursing staff of the local children's ward. The appeal raises funds for the children's wards at the local hospitals, rather than supporting a foundation for terminally ill children, because of the desire to support something that, at some point, most parents will need to access. So, it is a true community cause and goes right to the heart of local families. Even if it's for a scratch or broken bone, all parents want to be sure that those people caring for their child have the best possible facilities.
the generosity of the people and businesses of Cairns will help towards renovating the Children's Ward at the Cairns Base Hospital including the construction of an outdoor playground and a short stay observation ward. To date they have raised over $50,000 that has gone towards these causes. Flu Shot Facts to Consider Before Getting One It is time once again to consider whether or not you should get a flu shot. For many people the decision is obvious, depending upon their age, health and where they work. But should you get a flu shot? Understanding a few facts about the flu and the flu shot can help you decide if it is right for you.
The vaccine should not be given to pregnant women in their first trimester or to women who are trying to conceive because of the mercury that is contained in the shot. People allergic to eggs should also not receive the shot since eggs are used in the production of the vaccine. People who are generally healthy, eat right and exercise regularly should not need the vaccine.
What is influenza? Pros and cons Influenza (flu) comes in many strains because the viruses that cause it continually change. Symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite and cough. It usually lasts between 3-7 days but can sometimes cause complications like dehydration or pneumonia that can require hospitalisation. For generally healthy people the flu poses no lasting threat but to those with weakened immune systems it can be deadly. What is the flu vaccine? Each year the flu vaccine is developed with the three most prevalent strains of the virus for that season. The vaccine is made up from purified viruses grown in egg cultures. This vaccine is made to be inactive and noninfectious and the purpose is to stimulate an immune reaction in your body once the shot has been given. Since the flu season typically runs between May and September it is best to get the shot in early autumn because it takes two weeks to become effective. Few people experience side-effects from the vaccine however some do have redness and swelling at the injection site and others feel mildly sick for a day or two. The vaccine is 70% effective in preventing the flu and if you do contract the flu the symptoms are less severe. Who needs the flu shot? It is recommended that people who are at high risk of developing complications due to the flu should have a flu shot. These people include the elderly age 65 and older, residents of nursing homes or other care facilities, students living in shared housing, people working in hospitals or schools, people with chronic disorders and people with diabetes, asthma, HIV or any other health problem that compromises their immune system.
The flu shot is highly effective in reducing the amount of deadly flu cases in Australia each year, especially in the elderly population. It reduces the risk of upper respiratory illness by 25% and also reduces absences in the workplace by 36%. Having the shot does decrease spreading the flu to family, friends and co-workers and saves thousands of lives each year. However, getting the flu shot does not mean you will not get the flu. Since the shot only covers three of the most prominent viruses that cause the flu there is a chance of contracting a virus that is not covered. Also, if you are someone who is relatively healthy but continues to get the shot each year you can weaken your immune system's natural defense system. Immune systems actually strengthen when they have to fight off viruses. Getting the shot deprives your body from becoming immune to the different viruses that cause the flu. The vaccine also contains a preservative called thimerosal that contains mercury. Mercury is a toxic metal that can damage the brain and nerve cells. It has also been linked to developing Alzheimer's disease, memory loss, dementia, anxiety, depression, ADD, hypertension, heart disease and birth defects. Elderly people who have had five or more consecutive flu shots are 10 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's due to the accumulation of mercury in the brain. The flu vaccine is definitely a lifesaver for many individuals who might otherwise suffer consequences from contracting the flu but like so many other medicines it can also cause side-effects. Knowing the facts will help you make an informed decision on whether or not the shot is right for you.

Step 1: Making it to Fame‌.oops I mean, Frame! Cut the lengths of pine in their sizes so that you can be laid out how it should be put together. Once the lengths of wood are cut, begin making the frame by starting with one end, then the middle, then the other end. This will be your frame to start from. Step 2: The laying quarters. Now that you have the frame done, you need to begin the covered area which will cover the nesting area for the chooks. Firstly, start with the back and cut up your hardy flex to fit. Then the sides, base and then the face of the enclosure. This sheet is similar to the back sheet but this sheet will have little doorways cut out.
first and make sure to secure the mesh to the frame as you go to make sure that there are no bulges in the middle. Once you have done the sides, do the same for the base and top. Now you can also cover the door. Step 5: Shelter from the elements Now we need to make a roof. Firstly, make the frame for the roof so that the iron can be attached easily. Get the timber already cut to size and screw it together. Then cover this with mesh and then attach the roofing iron.
good
Step 3: Getting out! The doorway should be made now so that you can cover it with chicken wire when you cover the coop. Simply get your four pieces of timber and join them to make a rectangle and this will be your doorway. Step 4: Covering it all up! Now that the frame and enclosure is finished, you need to cover the entire frame with chicken wire. Make sure to use you gloves to handle the wire because it can be quite sharp at the edges once it has been cut. Roll out the wire around the sides
Step 6: Whinge, whinge‌hinge. Now we must attach the roof and the door to the main frame. This will be done using our door hinges so that the roof will lift and the door will open. For the door, attach the two hinges so the door is able to swing open and closed freely. The roof will need three hinges so similar to the door, attach the hinges. Step 7: Lock up and lock out! Now all you need is the lock or latch to hold the door shut and the chicks are ready to move in! Hope you've enjoyed making the coop and send in any ideas you may have for a DIY project or even send some pics of your own DIY projects.

Pet Tips & Hints By Cairns Vetinary Clinic
DOES YOUR PET HAVE ARTHRITIS? Pets are just as susceptible to this condition as humans and it causes just as much discomfort. To determine whether your pet could be suffering from arthritis, ask yourself if you've noticed any of the following: - They have difficulty rising from a resting position - They appear to be stiff after exercise - They have trouble climbing stairs - They've developed a limp - They have difficulty walking, running or jumping If you've answered yes to any of these questions you should ask a vet to examine your pet for arthritis. In dogs the condition is quite common, affecting more than one in five, however in cats the condition often goes unnoticed as they adapt very well to disabilities. This painful degenerative disease can occur at any age or weight and at its worst, especially if left untreated, arthritis can cause chronic pain, difficulty in movement and a decline in quality of life. So, what causes arthritis? Most of the joints in the body depend on a layer of cartilage acting as a cushion, which also provides a smooth surface so the adjoining bones can move freely over each other. This is assisted by the lubrication provided by synovial fluid, the oily liquid in joints. With arthritis, the cartilage deteriorates and the synovial fluid loses some of its lubricating properties, so that the movement of bones becomes less smooth. This frequently occurs as a result of the cumulative effects of abnormal stresses placed on the joints. These might be because of trauma, ageing, continual wear and tear or because of the abnormal alignment of bones that make up the joint. Obesity can seriously aggravate arthritis, as the joint must carry a greater load than it was
52
designed for. To help your pet be happy and enjoy life again there are four important areas of therapy: 1) Effective medication - treatments for arthritis include medications which protect, nourish and lubricate joints plus nutritional supplements which promote cartilage formation and reduce inflammation. Treatment may involve daily medication, a course of weekly injections, in addition to nutritional supplements or prescription diets. 2) Weight control - joint problems, which lead to pain, are aggravated by excess weight therefore it is important for your pet to maintain a healthy physique. 3) Exercise - over exertion will put an excessive strain on the joints, but not enough exercise will lead to greater stiffness and muscle wastage. Gentle regular exercise is best as this keeps the joints moving and the muscle in tone 4) Environment - ensure that your pet has a warm bed away from draughts. This bed should be well padded, so as not to put excess strain on the joints. Reducing the number of stairs or the steepness of the slope your dog must use to get to its resting place. Japanese Mothers Group I had the good fortune recently whilst I was in Japan to be able to attend a mothers group meeting. It was so different to the way we run mothers's groups in Australia and one of the most surprising things I discovered was that Japanese mother's groups are not just for new Mums. In the group I attended there were brand new Mum's sitting alongside Grandmothers and every other type of mother inbetween. What a great way to share valuable parenting experiences!
This particular group in Hiroshima were very concerned with ensuring that kids eat healthily and they publish recipes in the local newspaper once a week and also do cooking presentations in supermarkets. Amazingly they are sponsored by several different food companies including a seaweed company, soy sauce, a pickle company and also a miso paste company. The sponsors use the group to research their new products and to ask them for their feedback on packaging, labelling, presentation and price before they're launched on to the market.
54
The group made several dishes showcasing their sponsors' products in healthy kid's meals. The average Japanese kitchen is tiny compared to the Australian version so add seven ladies in aprons and you can imagine how cramped it got! Despite this, everyone seemed to know their job and they worked alongside each other very smoothly. We made rice burgers (rice instead of bread) and rice balls wrapped in pickles. Once these were all cooked they then bought out other treats they had purchased and sat down for lunch and to discuss future projects etc. It actually runs very formally and they even keep minutes of meeting. Also, their idea of a healthy breakfast is so far removed from what our kids eat most mornings, it's incredible. They asked me what most kids in Australia have for breakfast and I had a bit of a hard time explaining things like Coco Pops, Muesli Bars, Pop Tarts and other such really awful things we give our kids. Japanese kids generally eat rice, pickles, fish, eggs, vegies etc for breakfast. There is no cereal aisle at the supermarket in Japan and even finding a toaster is a difficult task. We discussed general child issues which seem to be the same the world over and then I had to leave to catch a train. It was a fantastic experience and I came away feeling that I could definitely learn some lessons from the Japanese with regards to healthy food for the kids. Within a few week of being back in the country we were back to porridge and rice bubbles which I suppose aren't that bad! All I can do is try my best, as every mother does, to make sure our kids eat healthy as often as possible.

New Zealand The Land of the Long White Cloud is a great family destination - easy to navigate with lots of sightseeing and activities to keep the kids entertained. The best way to get around the country is by hiring a car from Auckland and dropping it off at your final destination. Within Auckland, visit the Auckland Sky Tower or Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium before heading south to Rotorua, the home of thermal springs, mud pools and Maori culture. Take the kids Zorbing or to the Agrodome where you can watch sheep demonstrations, cow milking and all sorts of other farm animals. At the bottom end of the North Island is Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, where you can visit the bold and innovative national museum of Te Papa. Crossing over to the South Island, you'll find a land of contrasts. Christchurch is a beautiful city with a very English feel, beautiful botanic gardens, whale watching and the amazing International Antarctic Centre where you can see Little Blue Penguins. From Christchurch the drive to the snow in Queenstown is a 6 hour journey. Even in summer you will find plenty of activities (including a luge) set amongst some breathtaking scenery.

It is a huge wildlife park that occupies 8 acres of land and has been designed to emulate our regions three main types of natural environments so you can observe the animals in an 'almost' normal setting. We spent 4 hours at the Habitat but we could easily have spent much longer wandering through the rainforest, wetlands and grasslands habitats. There's plenty to keep the kids amused.
The Wetlands The Wetlands area reflects are a crucial depicts the amazing diversity of our natural wetlands that are important fringing areas and provides a link to many ecosystems. An array of wading birds can be viewed foraging for fish in waterways beneath the boardwalks.
What makes a day trip to the Habitat even more special is that you can break up the tour of the park by having 'Lunch with the Lorikeets' in the Wetlands area. For the bargain price of $29 per adult (if you're a local) you can gain entry to the park and it includes an excellent BBQ lunch. The lunch includes soup and freshly baked breads, BBQ steaks fish or pasta and some very fresh and tasty salads. To finish off there's also cheese and crackers, tropical fruits and a selection of teas and coffees. It's delicious and very good value and it also saves you having to bother packing lunches for the kids. Meanwhile there's lorikeets squealing overhead and if you're really lucky they'll also come and sit on your shoulder. There are also other birds to look out for including curlews, parrots, herons and lots of others. You can either walk around and enjoy meeting the animals by yourselves or join one of the free guided tours that take place. There are also daily presentations focusing on some of our more popular animals ie. snakes, crocs and koalas.

The Rainforest Look out for the Southern Cassowary, Boyd's Forest Dragon and the colourful Eclectus parrots. Walk along meandering Boardwalks along the forest floor to the rainforest canopy.
The Grasslands This is a fabulous area where you can get close to kangaroos, wallabies and emus. There's an endangered Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo and many more animals to watch out for including Estuarine and Freshwater crocodiles which lurk beneath the murky waters of the lagoons.

Movie Review - Movie Review - Movie Review
It's the story about a lazy, irreverent slacker panda, named Po, who is the biggest fan of Kung Fu around...which doesn't exactly come in handy while working every day in his family's noodle shop. Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po's dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane,
Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- under the leadership of their guru, Master Shifu. But before they know it, the vengeful and treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung is headed their way, and it's up to Po to defend everyone from the oncoming threat. Can he turn his dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master into reality? Po puts his heart - and his girth - into the task, and the unlikely hero ultimately finds that his greatest weaknesses turn out to be his greatest strengths.

Nights Walk around the living room from 5pm to 10pm carrying a wet bag weighing approx. 4 - 6kg. At 10pm, put the bag down; set the alarm for midnight and go to sleep. Get up at 11pm and walk the bag around the living room until 1am. Set the alarm for 3am. As you can't get back to sleep, get up at 2am and make a cup of tea. Go to bed at 2.45am. Get up again at 3am when the alarm goes off. Sing songs in the dark until 4am. Put the alarm on for 5am. Get up when it goes off. Make breakfast. Keep this up for 5 years. Dressing Small Children Attempt to put a live octopus in to a string bag so that no arms are hanging out, within 5 minutes. Cars Buy a practical 5-door wagon and then shove a chocolate ice cream cone in to the glove compartment, insert a coin into the CD player, and mash a box of chocolate biscuits into the back seat. Lastly, run a garden rake along both sides of the car. Grocery Shopping Go to the local supermarket. Take with you the nearest thing you can find to a pre-school child - a fully grown goat is excellent. If you intend to have more than one child, take more than one goat. Buy your weekly groceries without letting the goat(s) out of your sight. Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys. Feeding a 1 year-old Hollow out a melon and make a small hole in the side. Suspend it from the ceiling and swing it from side to side. Now get a bowl of soggy cornflakes and attempt to spoon them into the swaying melon while pretending to be an aeroplane. Continue until half the cornflakes are gone and then tip the rest into your lap, making sure that a lot of it falls on the floor. Mess Smear peanut butter in to the sofa and curtains, hide a fish behind the stereo, rub muddy fingers over the walls and then cover the stains with crayon. To complete the look, empty every drawer/cupboard/storage box in your house onto the floor & leave it there. Conversations Talk to an adult of your choice whilst having someone else continually tug on your shirt hem or shirt sleeve. Make sure they are continually shouting Mummy at supersonic volume.
Teacher: When was Rome built? Pupil: At night. Teacher: Why did you say that? Pupil: Because my Dad always says that Rome wasn't built in a day! Do you know the first Prime Minister? No, we were never introduced! An ideal homework excuse Teacher: Where is your homework? Pupil: I put it in a safe, but lost the combination! Doctor, Doctor I dream there are monsters under my bed, what can I do? Saw the legs off of your bed! Why do cows like being told jokes? Because they like being amoosed! What do you get if you cross a sheep with a kangaroo? A woolly jumper! A man drove 2,000 miles with his family without knowing he had a flat tire. How come? It was his spare tyre that was flat. Two outlaws robbed a bank. They decided to bury the money they stole. If it took two outlaws five days to dig a hole, how many days would it take them to dig half a hole? None. You can't dig half a hole.
