N WHAT TO PACK
orth Queensland is renowned for its hot and sunny weather all year round, even in our so-called winter months. Perhaps the long standing FNQ joke of, “I think winter happened on Tuesday last year, will help you to more understand. A trip to this region is a tropical getaway, pack shorts, t-shirts, tank tops and the essential bathing suit, but be sunwise and, particularly for the kids, long sleeved rash vests are best. Comfy sandals and thongs are almost uniform but do remember to pack closed in walking shoes if you are doing any adventuring. A light rain jacket and umbrella are essentials for the wet season from December to April. If you are venturing up in our winter months, May to August and heading to the Whitsundays, inland or up to the Tablelands do bring a jumper. Temperatures at night can be a little chillier and this is more so if the winds are strong. Most North Queensland restaurants and nightlife venues carry the smart casual theme into the night, so whilst you are welcome to dress to the nines don’t be surprised if you are sitting next to someone in shorts. Last but not least, bring a smile and an eagerness to thoroughly enjoy all that our region has to offer.
The Great Barrier Reef
4
Always carry a water bottle to keep hydrated, apply sunscreen and re-apply often, and wear a hat. Insect repellent is as essential as sunscreen if heading into the rainforest or to mangroves/creeks. Look out for discount brochures/multiple booking discounts with one company or kids travel free offers. Diving on the Great Barrier Reef is a must do, introductory dives are available for novices. An underwater camera is great for capturing photos of your magical moments on the reef. If you are doing independent hiking trips ensure you pack safety and emergency equipment. Plan ahead, many restaurants offer ‘kids eat free’ nights on differing nights of the week.
TOP 10 TRAVEL TIPS

Carry your togs with you everywhere, you never know when a refreshing dip might offer itself up. Beware of danger signs at swimming holes/beaches. Crocodiles, sharks and jelly fish are often present. Remember, have a great time, don’t fret the little things, enjoy the adventure or relish the relaxation.

THE RAINFOREST
T
he tropical rainforest surrounding Cairns and the Daintree is truly unique. Ripe with lush plant life and native wildlife, you can experience the natural beauty in a number of different ways.
There are plenty of free pathways to explore within the the Botanical Gardens, the Centenary Lakes or the Catanna Wetlands to name a few. All of these walks are great for families with young children and include plenty of places to stop and have a picnic, feed the ducks and other birdlife or take a few family photos. There are also several guided day or weekend tours to the Daintree, Tablelands and Cape Tribulation where you soon learn why the rainforest is one of Far North Queensland’s most protected treasures. Many of these tours include guided walks, boat and river cruises and even jungle canopy adventures for older kids. Most of the rainforest in FNQ is considered national park area which is why it is so important to take only pictures, leave only footprints and respect the space by leaving all pets at home.

YOUR GUIDE TO TOWNSVILLE & MAGNETIC ISLAND
L
ocated four hours south of Cairns and five hours north of Mackay, Townsville is home to a number of incredible beaches, freshwater creeks, family-friendly hikes and natural attractions. Whether you live in Townsville or are just visiting for a weekend away, our guide will steer you in the right direction when it comes to what to do, where to stay and how to make the most of your Townsville experience. TOWNSVILLE
Half Day
Take a hike (or drive) up to Castle Hill to enjoy amazing views of the city, explore the reef and the natural history of Australia at Reef HQ and the Museum of Tropical Queensland or take in an NRL game at 1300SMILES stadium, home to the 2015 NRL premiers, North Queensland Toyota Cowboys. Perhaps one of the highlights of Townsville is the Strand, which offers direct access to the beach and ocean water (with plenty of places to hire kayaks, paddle boards, etc.) as well as water parks, playgrounds, a rock pool and the Jezzine Barracks. Being the capital of Far North Queensland, you can expect it to be quite hot. The good thing about Townsville is that, in addition to the many pools and beaches, there are also a number of freshwater creeks and swimming holes off the beaten track. Some of our favourite places to enjoy a swim and a family picnic include Alligator Creek, Paradise Waterhole, Little Crystal Creek, Lake Paluma and Jourama Falls.

CIAF • 14th to 16th July 2017 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) will celebrate the official opening of its eighth annual event on Thursday 13th July with a music, dance and art spectacular beneath the stars at Heritage Listed Shed 3 at Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal. This social gathering signals the start of a multi-dimensional program exhibiting the rich culture and vast artistic talent, spanning visual and performing arts, of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. There is something for everyone, workshops that form an engaging and interactive component, children’s Storytime, dance performances, live music, fireworks and fashion performances. From a visual art perspective, CIAF’s curated art exhibition will be an artistic response to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander notion of family. Themed, ‘Family Values’, the exhibited works will be selected by renowned curator and writer, Hetti Perkins and CIAF’s Creative Director, Janina Harding. 76
