Like most autistic children, Victoria says Rylan occasionally has meltdowns when they are out and she finds this especially hard because other people can be very judgemental. She struggles with the stares people give her and she says it can be hurtful. “Everybody wants to be the better parent and unfortunately they can often judge others too quickly,” she says. Now pregnant with their third child, Victoria says she is more relaxed this time round. She says they are more confident and in control of the situation and are a lot more settled. Rylan is a high functioning autistic child who will go to a normal primary school next year, and that will be a new chapter for the family. They say there is fantastic support in Cairns for families dealing with autism including the Cairns Autism support groups, Play Connect which is a playgroup for autistic children, facebook forums and the autism centre which Rylan attends. [5] Exams Your child does not have to do exams but if they get to Grade 7 in most boards, it can help boost their OP at the end of Grade 12. Most children are ready for an exam of some sort after about 18 months – 2 years of study. There are lots of different examining boards these days with different options, for example, classical and modern. Some of the newer boards are making exams much more child-friendly. You can pick and choose which ones best suit your child.

[6] Younger Children If you do have younger children that are desperate to learn music, try classes such as Kindermusik and Kodaly for Younger Children. There are no qualified Suzuki teachers in Cairns (there is one on the Tablelands) so it’s often best to wait than to have someone under-qualified teach your child and teach incorrect technique. Follow these general guidelines and you will be setting your children up to love music for life. Nicole Tobin-Donnelly is currently VicePresident of the Music Teachers Association of Queensland (Cairns & District branch). She has recently been awarded Kindermusik Maestro status for the 8th consecutive year.

living the good life Some would say that living the good life revolves around having material possessions, money and social status but as Anne Rennie states (2012), the ‘good life’ sold to us by the media comes with an expensive price tag of built-in obsolescence. It requires constant worshipping at the altar of commerce whose gods are insatiable. There’s a big difference between this ‘good life’

Health Fund Focus

HEALTH FUND April 1st is never a celebrated day for people with health insurance policies because it’s the day most of us will pay more for health insurance than we did the previous year. Increases in the cost of goods and services push up the cost of hospital and medical procedures, adding to the costs of health funds and in turn resulting in increased health insurance premiums. But now is the perfect time to review our policies to make sure they continue to meet our needs and give us the best value for money. Since 2006 Queensland Country Health Fund’s premium increases have been consistently below its major competitors and 6.65% lower than average industry rate increases, which mean real savings for Members. motion if it appears to be causing a problem. Fully breast fed babies may have a poo every 7–10 days, or it may be after every feed! Bottle fed babies and older children generally poo at least every 2-3 days. Kids regularly get too involved in playtime and ignore the physical sensation of an impending bowel motion. As this sensation passes, more water is absorbed from the motion while it is in the rectum and a dry, hard poo results. Some kids just seem to have a sluggish bowel

and sometimes, soiling, which is mostly due to chronic constipation even though they may sometimes pass a small amount of faeces.

What to do about it: • Establish a regular toilet routine, for example, five minutes after breakfast. This is important because it will encourage good toilet habits.

If you are still having difficult consult your G.P. There is an array of medicines available for chronic constipation. Catch up with Cleo We visited Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures and got to feed a crocodile, pat a wallaby and get up close to a koala, a snake and a few other animals. I had a chat with the mammal keeper to find out a bit more. Q&A with Hartley’s Mammal Keeper, Tanya Melville [1] How many crocodiles are there at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures? 2400 saltwater crocs & 100 freshwater crocs. [2] How many saltwater crocodiles and how many freshwater ones? 2400 saltwater crocs but only 100 of these are at the zoo (the others are at the crocodile farm) and about 100 freshwater crocodiles.

[3] Who is your biggest crocodile? Big Ted and he is 5.3 metres long. [4] What do crocodiles like to eat? They like to eat almost anything but at the zoo we feed them chicken and fish.

[6] What can kids do at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures? We have snake and crocodile shows, a boat cruise to watch a crocodile jump for food, kids can feed wallabies, pat a koala and have their photo taken with a baby crocodile, koala or a snake. And in the school holidays we have an animal show where

Story thanks to Dr. Jacqui Dalby-Payne

Fussy eating is so common it is considered normal toddler behaviour. It is normal for children in the second year of life to use food to exert control over their lives. 3-4 times a week. Non-haem iron – found in

they eat better at one meal than another and better on some days of the week than others. Plotting your child’s weight and height on a growth chart every couple of months will often show that, despite the apparent lack of intake they are receiving adequate calories and growing normally. It is important to ensure, however, that their diet is adequate in important nutrients, particularly iron and calcium, and that they are consuming foods from all five food groups.

Iron deficiency

For some fussy eaters dairy can become restricted and, having received most of their nutrients from formula or breastfeeding in the first six months of life, they seem to suddenly dislike dairy products and refuse to drink milk. Soymilk enriched with calcium is a good substitute for cows milk. Other soy products available include soy yoghurt, cheese and ice cream, which can ease the pain of a dairy-free diet. Other sources include tofu, canned salmon with the bones, sardines, breakfast cereals with added

calcium and broccoli.

One of the most common causes of iron deficiency is overconsumption of milk. Giving toddlers more than 600mL of cows milk a day will reduce their appetite for other essential foods.

Sensory food aversions Children with sensory food aversion have a more extreme form of fussy eating. Unlike the fussy eater who eats a variety of foods that vary from meal to meal and day to day, the child with a

mealtimes and may refuse all similar foods. They may have sensory issues outside of mealtimes, for example, preferring to have clean hands, becoming distressed with loud noises or refusing to walk barefoot on grass or sand. Taking the focus off ‘eating’ the non-preferred food and reducing the amount of coaxing, begging and directing the child to eat is important to reduce anxiety. Parents should give positive reinforcement for early steps such as tolerating the food or touching food in play. A child with sensory aversion often needs to first see a new food several times and then tolerate it on their plate before being expected to eat it. Working with a psychologist as they get older may also help them overcome their fears relating to food. It is important to recognise that for children with sensory issues the transition to eating a variety of foods takes much time and effort and may require the involvement of a dietitian, doctor and psychologist. wearing the latest fashion trends. Style is putting thought into what you wear and having your clothes and accessories co-ordinate beautifully. It’s wearing wellfitted garments that flatter your shape as well as having clothes that look well cared for, washed and ironed. Style requires a wardrobe that includes a mix of timeless classics, modern fabrics in colours that suit your skin tone and styles that suit your figure. It also means paying attention to personal grooming; neat hair, plucked eyebrows, tidy nails (no chipped nail polish) and neatly applied make up.

Following on from the success of our last Adventure Mums outing, we invited a few PakMag readers, all mums of course, to join us for a morning cable skiing. It required good upper body strength and gave all the mums a workout, even the super fit ones. Everyone had a great time and felt exhilarated at making it around the lake on kneeboards, and some even attempted the wakeboards. www.pakmag.com.au
