Hello and welcome to our February edition. I hope you mums are all taking some time out now the kids are back at school. We are off on a family holiday to Bali this month, it’s our first time flying overseas with two kids so it should be interesting. I can’t wait for the $10 massages and pedicures. Last time my feet got any attention was before Sean was born so I probably look like a hobbit! I’m going to need about four pedicures to get them looking human. Hope to see you at our Kings and Queens PakClub on the 10th. And, don’t forget to enter our Disney competition to win VIP tickets to Disney Live and get a chance to be on stage with the cast and crew.

Reading MAtters
National Concern by Elaine Seager
Last year was the National Year of Reading yet recent reports show that Australian children are lagging far behind their international peers when it comes to reading. So what does this mean for our children?
I
n December a report was released showing how Australian Year 4 students compared to children in other countries. The results were sobering and have ignited furious debate. Australia ranked 27th on the list and had the worst results of any English speaking country. Our Year 4 students did poorly in maths and science but especially reading. The 2011 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) assessed approximately 300,000 Year 4 students across the participating countries and provided the first internationally comparable information about the reading levels of Australian primary school students. The study revealed that many Australian Year 4 students have substantial literacy problems, with around one quarter of students not meeting the Intermediate benchmark – the standard generally considered in international achievement studies to be the minimally acceptable standard of proficiency. According to the report “Australia has a substantial ‘tail’ of underperformance. For such a highly-developed country, this level of underperformance is not acceptable and its minimisation should become a priority.” Of course the fingers have been pointing in political circles with everything from poor teacher quality to an iodine deficiency being blamed. Some have also suggested that the way our education system teaches reading needs an overhaul. One of the countries that performed well in the report was Hong Kong where teachers have moved away from traditional rote learning and developed a new style of teaching reading to young children.
12
www.pakmag.com.au
Whatever the causes, our education system is not going to change overnight so what can we do as parents to make sure our children learn to read well? Given that reading is the foundation for all other learning in school, problems with literacy can obviously affect a child’s performance across all other subjects. It is therefore important for parents to be proactive and seek solutions if they begin to notice their child has difficulties with reading. The starting point is to get a full assessment with an educational psychologist or specialist teacher to find out what may be causing the problem. Bill Spooner from Bill Spooner’s Coaching Academy believes part of the problem is the way reading is taught in schools and that it does not suit every student, especially those with learning difficulties. As a dyslexic himself he doesn’t believe that being “immersed” in literacy and books is a guarantee of success and that children need to be taught more systematically in order to become effective readers. He teaches the Australian Reading Freedom program in his business, a comprehensive, fully integrated phonics program that is carefully structured and especially useful for students with reading difficulties. It is based on contemporary research into the ways children best learn to read and is intended for use in both the primary years and secondary schools. For further information and to download the full PIRLS reports, summaries and multimedia visit www.acer.edu.au/timss. Mortgage Rethink?
However refinancing is not always as simple as walking down the street to a different lender, and one of the key stumbling blocks can be lenders mortgage insurance (LMI). LMI applies if you borrow 80% or more of your home’s market value. This type of insurance isn’t transferrable between lenders so unless you have at least 20% home equity it’s likely you’ll be slugged with LMI even if you paid it when you first purchased the place.
16
www.pakmag.com.au
As a guide, if you have a home worth $400,000 and you’re refinancing a loan of $360,000, you could be looking at an LMI premium of around $6,400. Check out the online LMI calculator on the website of mortgage insurer Genworth for an idea of the LMI premium you may face.

Whenever the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decides to cut the official cash rate it is good news for homeowners but as we saw throughout 2012, most lenders are reluctant to pass on the full value of rate cuts to their customers. Rather than getting frustrated by this, check how your home loan compares to the broader market – is your mortgage consistently charging above average interest rates? Variable home loan interest rates currently range from about 5.27% to more than 7.00%. If so, it could be time to take your business elsewhere.

Remember the cheapest mortgage is always the one you pay off sooner. Making extra repayments is a simple way to enjoy big savings on interest and become mortgagefree ahead of schedule. It also helps you build equity in your home so you’re better placed to refinance further down the track. Even small extra payments can lead to supersized savings over time. For example a $300,000 mortgage payable over 25 years at 6.50% would add up to around $307,686 interest costs over the full term. However, by paying an extra $40 off the loan each month you could cut the long term interest bill by as much as $16,913. That’s $2,929 more than the $13,984 you’d save in interest by switching to a loan charging 6.25%. It’s essential to crunch the numbers before bailing to a different mortgage lender. And if it turns out you can save on monthly repayments by switching, give your finances an extra boost by using those savings to pay off the new loan sooner. Circumcision – to snip or not?
news
Circumcision is back in the headlines with people lobbying hard on both sides of the debate.
Bowel Cancer
By Dr. Julia Driscoll
Bowel cancer is a major health problem in Australia with one in 12 Australians likely to develop the disease before the age of 85. The good news is it is 75% preventable through protective lifestyle factors. The Queensland Health Department has the following tips to protect against bowel cancer:
[1] Watch your tummy fat From my perspective I side with the Australian College of Surgeons and Physicians who both advise against circumcision at this time as there is no medical reason to routinely perform the procedure. They state that, “after reviewing the available evidence, the risks of routine circumcision are believed to be greater than the potential benefits.“ Whilst the potential complications of surgical procedures (pain, bleeding and infection) are cited as a key reason not to circumcise, the following summary outlines the main medical arguments put forward in favour of circumcision: • It is argued that circumcised boys get fewer UTIs although the jury is still out
on this one. Less than 1% of boys get UTIs and they are usually treated with simple antibiotics. • They get fewer STD’s like HPV and HIV. This theory is based on a study of African men and its findings haven’t been able to be replicated in our western society. It is now policy to vaccinate all Australian boys against HPV.
[2] Keep up the fibre
• It protects against infection round the head of the penis. This infection is uncommon provided the foreskin is not forcibly retracted.

like chicken, cheese and yoghurt need to be kept cool which can be a challenge in our tropical climate. Here are a few tips for keeping school lunches cool: • Invest in an insulated lunch box. • Freeze a small water bottle or juice carton overnight to pack in a soft insulated lunch box. I have suggested that she come with me to visit our family GP but she refuses. What can I do to help her? Your daughter does appear to be showing some key signs of depression. Two of the key identifiers for depression are feelings of sadness and losing interest in activities that used to bring enjoyment. Physical symptoms may include often feeling tired, feeling run down, having headaches and muscle pain, sleep problems, poor appetite, weight loss or changed eating patterns. Depression can be linked to medical issues such as low thyroid

children. Although some parents may want to react strongly when their child bites, the most effective approach is to be calm and provide a consistent, firm and loving response. It is also important to understand why your child is biting. Most children don’t bite out of anger or to hurt another child. It can be a way of communicating or gaining attention; sometimes a child may get some kind of pay-off for biting.

Try jotting down who, when and in what situations they bite as this can provide an insight into what your child might be achieving by doing this. The best intervention is prevention, and this is more easily done once you’ve identified a pattern in their behaviour. Many children display certain behaviours, such as teeth clenching, just before they are about to bite another child. If you see your child doing

It’s normal for newborn infants to cry for up to two hours a day but during a colic episode, a baby may be difficult or impossible to comfort, their crying is intense and they may clench their fists, draw up their knees or arch their backs.
What causes Colic? The causes of colic are unknown but research has indicated the following:

Turkish
Delight by Amanda Cranston
For a fantastic family night out, Ala Turka Turkish Restaurant on the Esplanade has great food with an exotic selection of dishes to cater for everyone, including the kids.
Traditional Turkish Cuisine
K
ids can be fussy eaters at the best of times but my kids delighted in everything Al Turka had to offer from the food and service through to the atmosphere. The interior of the restaurant is like being in Aladdin’s Cave with walls and floors covered in Turkish rugs, lanterns hanging from the ceiling and a comfy sitting area at the back of the restaurant with sheeshas for the true Turkish experience. We actually spent time in Turkey before the kids were born so it was nice to introduce the kids to Turkish food. Once seated, we started off our meal with a selection of dips including carrot, humus, baba ghanoush and cacik, which were served with Turkish bread, a great starter with wonderful flavours. The kids menu offered plenty of choice with lamb shish (skewers), chicken shish, meatballs, pizza, fish and chips and spaghetti and nearly all served with chips. Mine chose spaghetti bolognaise which had the most amazing spices and fish and chips, and I mean not the usual battered fish but an actual barramundi fillet that was cooked to perfection. Their meals were lightly spiced but not too much to upset their tastebuds. The rest of the menu offers a wide selection of banquet choices, dips and entrees, appetisers and salads, mains, vegetarian meals, authentic
dishes, seafood and Turkish pides. Our favourite dish of the night was Iskender, apparently Alexander the Great’s favourite dish too. It was succulent grilled lamb cubes with a tomato base and topped with a creamy butter sauce, served on pita bread which had soaked through the juices on the plate and was accompanied by a side serve of Greek yoghurt. The combination of flavours was incredible and true to the style of traditional Turkish cooking. For dessert we chose the Turkish Delight and Baklava over the rice pudding and apple flavoured crème caramels, to give our kids a true taste of Turkish desserts. They were quite divided with one loving the Baklava and the other preferring the Turkish Delight, but both were sticky sweet and decent sized portions. To finish the meal I had a Turkish coffee served in a beautiful little teacup and saucer. For anyone not familiar with Turkish coffee, all I can say is it is VERY strong. Once finished our waiter tipped my teacup upside down on the saucer and put a coin on top and left it for five minutes before coming back to read my cup. Similar to reading tea leaves, he flipped over my cup and read the shapes on the inside of my cup to reveal some insight into my future. The kids loved listening to his interpretations and we all really enjoyed our night out at Ala Turka.

Family
Health Story thanks to Lisa Lodwick
Families
D
id you know that the amount of kids who are overweight has doubled in recent years? An alarming one in four children are now classed as overweight or obese and the amount of kids placed into this category continues to rise.
Family
Fitness The best way to ensure our children grow up with healthy lifestyle habits is by being a good role model. If children learn to put a high priority on physical activities they are far more likely to grow into healthy active adults.
46
www.pakmag.com.au
The health ramifications of these statistics are enormous and consequently the Government has been introducing new programs to stem the tide. These include many Queensland Government schools implementing programs to encourage physical activity, having strict guidelines on what is served at the tuckshop as well as teachers monitoring lunches brought from home. But of course, this is only part of the solution. As parents we also need to take responsibility for how much exercise our children are getting and ensure they are spending sufficient time outside being active. Since the whole family can always benefit from more physical activity why not commit to doing more active things together in 2013?
Here are some ways to get more active as a family: • Bike Riding – there are lots of great bike paths around Cairns, even just along the Esplanade and foreshore. Cairns is also full of great mountain biking tracks. • Swimming – if you haven’t got your own pool take a weekly excursion to a public pool like Tobruk or head out to one of region’s many swimming holes • Running – Why not commit to participating in a 5k fun run and train together for the event? Check out Cairns Road Runners for local events.
• Dog walking – Owning a dog is a great way to get the whole family out for a walk. • Roller-skating/blading – Got some fond memories of roller disco’s? Head down to the Cairns Recreation Centre for a couple of hours of fun while working up a good sweat. You could even try the rock-climbing too. • Esplanade – the Council kindly provides lots of activities to get fit for free so there’s no excuse! A walk along the whole length of the Esplanade is good exercise in itself and there’s also the green gym equipment and bouldering to try out along the way •
Bush walking – the Red Arrow track is a great place to start building up your fitness before taking on longer tracks such as the Blue Arrow, Stoney Creek to Glacier Rock or one of the tracks at Crystal Cascades.
• Sport – why not take up a new sport together as a family like tennis, golf or martial arts. As parents it is important that we are good role models and that we lead by example. If we have healthy habits it is far more likely that our kids will too. It costs nothing to skip, jump, dance, throw a Frisbee around, do some gardening together or play games like hopscotch with your children. You will feel better for it and your kid’s health will benefit throughout their lives.
