Recession
Well it’s finally official. Our little bundle of joy, Jordan James Stievano, arrived nearly 2 weeks overdue on the 28th of February. Even though it was the hardest thing I have ever done physically, emotionally and mentally, it was one of the best days of my life.

I definitely have a newfound respect for the female body and the amazing piece of machinery it is. The way it can help grow, protect and bring into this world another human life and then pretty much return to how it was, give or take a few kilos, is amazing. Women are amazing! Don’t get me wrong, I respect that dads have a tough gig too, but I am sure all you dads out there wouldn’t swap places for quid’s. I am very lucky to have such amazing family and friends who have spoilt Jordan and supported Trent and I as we adjust to our new life, so thank you very much. Life sure has been amusing; we have never had so many bodily fluids expelled our way from 3 separate areas in a matter of minutes! So thank you Jordan, I am sure you will keep us smiling for the rest of our lives. This month is packed to the brim with comps, prize giveaways and heaps of activities and we hope to see you at our Easter Event this month on Easter Sunday. Don’t forget to dress-up in your best Easter-themed clothes to win some great prizes, that goes for mum and dad too.

The Dengue Outbreak isn’t going away any time soon so it’s important to keep our little ones protected by using insect repellent both inside and outside the house. There are some natural alternatives available on the market, two of which are created by local Cairns Mum’s. Natural Miracles has a cream product available from Coco Boo and Juniors and BerrySafe Insect Repellent is available in a spray bottle from Enviromart on Aumuller St or go to www.berrybaby.com.au.

Using food as a reward
by 1300smiles
Using food as a reward is natural enough – it happens every day of our lives whether we think about it or not, but is it appropriate? Are we setting our children up for a life time of poor food consumption habits? It’s worth having a bit of a think! Early food experiences can set a life time of eating patterns and influence health status later in life. The use of food as a reward can send inappropriate messages to our children that can, and often does, adversely affect both their short and long term health. Frequently, quick and easy rewards such as lollies, sweets and soft drinks given to our children encourages them to believe that these low nutritional foods and drinks are a more desirable choice than other healthier options. Also, they begin to associate achievement and reward for good behavior with sweets, giving them an emotional value as well as a sweet “hit” when it should be understood that there is no connection between behaviour and food. Using food as a reward begins to undermine the understanding that every day foods and drinks are the staples of our diet, and that the others should always remain as occasional foods and drinks. •A dults should act as suitable role models for appropriate dietary routines.

Farmers Markets:
Buying Food Direct from the Farmer By Elaine Seager Are you one of those people who likes to know where your food comes from and is sceptical about those claims to be ‘fresh food people’ by national supermarkets? Over the last couple of years there have been questions raised about our food supplies with stories circulating about products such as apples being kept in cold storage for months on end and then being sold as ‘fresh’ (with considerably less nutrients). More and more people now want to know where their food is coming from and as a consequence Farmer’s Markets have been gaining popularity in the major cities whereby consumers can buy direct from the farmer. Speewah Markets on the Tablelands sells local and organic produce and now Cairns is also about to join this trend with the new FarmGate Market launching at the Pier Marketplace on Saturday 18th April. Backed by State Government funding, the whole point behind this new market is to give local consumers the opportunity to buy fresh agricultural products directly from our local farmers. All products sold at the market are guaranteed to have been produced in FNQ between Cardwell and Cooktown and everything will be clearly labelled stating who they were produced by, how they were produced (eg. organic, freshcare), where they were grown, when they were harvested and the distance they travelled to the market. Finally there’s a way to be sure about what you’re eating within the city. Some people might be surprised that we even need a Farmer’s Market when we already have Rusty’s but as you may have noticed recently with the flooding much of the food sold at Rusty’s is sourced from somewhere down south. With the notable exception of IGA who do source a fair amount of produce from the Tablelands, Rusty’s had little more on offer than the national supermarket chains. If you’re wondering why this is, it all boils down to business. Rusty’s used to be an outlet for farmer’s to sell produce until the current owners took over and decided to take
10
a more commercial approach by asking stall holders to commit to a longer lease period so they’re income was more fixed. However, the logistics of farming means that farmers do not have harvest to sell all year round – ie. a pumpkin farmer may only have pumpkins to sell for a few months a year so what does he do with the stall for the rest of the time? Whilst this makes good business sense to the owners, it wasn’t practical for farmers and many of the current stall holders make it work by essentially doing the same as the supermarkets ie. sourcing fruit and veges all year round from down south. Farmer’s Markets are just one way of circumventing the sometimes crazy food supply system which makes our locally grown bananas and limes travel to Melbourne (often at the farmers expense) before being sold back to us in our supermarkets. Another concept which is slowly being experimented with around the world is CommunitySupported Agriculture whereby farmers and community groups enter in to a direct arrangement with each other. This idea first originated in Japan where local women were concerned by the globalisation of the food supply and clubbed together to buy rice direct from the local farmers. There has been a CSA project in operation in Koah on the Tablelands for around the last 12 months. The Koah Clean Harvest Food Bowl is an organic/biodynamic community supported project and seeks to protect our local rural farmers livelihoods whilst providing fresh nutritious product straight to families from the farm. How good does that sound? Speewah Markets operate every Sunday 8am-2pm in the carpark of Speewah Tavern. The Farmgate Farmer’s Market will operate between 7.20am-2pm on Saturdays starting 18th April at the Pier Marketplace.

Recession:
It might be all doom and gloom in the news but Elaine Seager takes a look at the opportunities that recession presents for parents. These are interesting times for our youngest generations since this global economic crisis is the first time they’ve ever experienced a recession. In fact they are so used to the spend thriftiness of boom times that it’s Gen Y’ers who are apparently the most ill-prepared financially for recession. And, yet, it is a part of the natural cycle of things. Nothing in nature grows consistently forever. Flowers grow and die, trees grow in spring and then lay still, waves ebb and flow, and seasons come and go. Winter is just as inevitable as the next springtime and economics follows exactly the same cycles. To expect continuous economic growth is unnatural. So how come so many people seemed surprised and, what can we teach our children to prepare them better for future recessions?
1) Be Prepared In many ways a recession is like a cyclone – it’s going to be uncomfortable and it’s coming whether you like it or not. But we’ve learnt that one of the best ways to face cyclones is to be prepared. Similarly if we ‘save for a rainy day’ we are less likely to be so scared about recession. Building up reserves of money, skills, network contacts and strong family and community ties makes you feel stronger and protects against future loss, just like an insurance policy.
This recession may be deeply felt and take a few years to recover from but it will eventually pass. Just like anything else in life, no matter how bad things are right now, it will get better.
4) Realise What’s Important We have become a society obsessed by ‘stuff’ over recent decades. Economic growth has made us all much wealthier and we’ve got the big TV’s to show it. But at the same time our children have been suffering from more psychological stress, mental disorders and obesity. Being materialistic has been shown to create depression and anxiety whereas the ‘stuff’ that actually creates happy kids is having close family and relationships, being a part of a community, being involved in worthwhile causes and having a passion in life. So, all the more reason to refocus your attention on enjoying your family.
We have become a society obsessed by ‘stuff’ over recent decades. Economic growth has made us all much wealthier and we’ve got the big TV’s to show it.
2) Don’t Over-Extend There are going to be many people who wished they hadn’t over-extended themselves financially. Excessive home loans and unwise investments have left them vulnerable. Only a few decades ago you could only get a mortgage based on the husband’s income. Whilst this is very often not practical these days because of the increased cost of living, there is still some wisdom in the idea of leaving yourself some room to safeguard against unexpected losses.
www.pakmag.com.au
3) This Too Will Pass
5) Get Your Priorities Sorted
Finally the most important lesson is not to be too attached to your life as it is and to accept that things may change. If you are fearful of losing your job, take action now and start to prepare so that you feel more in control. Downsizing and living a simpler life whilst the storm blows over will allow you feel more stress-free and to really enjoy your family instead of stressing about paying the bills.

Heart Health:
Australians Getting Older, heavier & Less Active By Simone White
The Heart Foundation has recently been celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary and during those 50 years they have successfully overseen death rates from cardiovascular disease steadily decline. However, there are now fears that this trend may go in to reverse with the increase in risk factors such as obesity. More than half of Australians are now either overweight or obese and more than half are also not doing any physical activity. These problems are most common amongst those aged 50-59 so the Foundation is using it’s anniversary year to trigger people also turning 50 this year to have a heart check up. One of the problems with the campaign for heart health is the fact that because heart disease has been in decline for so long there is a general perception that it is no longer a problem and only needs to concern those in old age. However cardiovascular disease remains Australia’s biggest killer accounting for 34% of all deaths. In addition to this a recent study in Western Australia also discovered that almost one-in-three 14 year olds are potentially at increased risk of heart disease. This study looked at clusters of cardiovascular risk factors in more than 1,000 fourteen year olds which included cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood glucose, weight and waist circumference. It found that 29 percent had a combination of blood or body measures that may increase the chance of developing vascular diseases including heart disease and diabetes. Whilst this was only a relatively small study it has sent a clear message - Heart health is a lifelong goal. The risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease are: smoking, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity, diabetes, high blood pressure, being overweight, depression (social isolation) and having a family history of early death from heart disease. To help keep your heart healthy the Heart Foundation has this 6-Step Checklist:
www.pakmag.com.au
1. Maintain healthy levels of blood pressure and blood cholesterol: Healthy lifestyle habits are critical to keeping these at healthy levels. Try to have them checked regularly and follow your doctors advice. 2. Quit smoking: Stopping smoking is the single most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. 3. Enjoy healthy eating: Healthy eating means enjoying a variety of foods from different food groups. Healthy eating is about choosing: mainly plant based foods; moderate amounts of lean meats, poultry, fish and reduced fat dairy products; and, moderate amounts of polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils and fats. 4. Be physically active: Regular, moderate-intensity physical activity is good for the heart. Getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity such as brisk walking on most days of the week. 5. Achieve and maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight and carrying too much weight around the waist are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. 6. Visit your GP regularly: Your GP can check your overall risk for cardiovascular disease and provide individualised advice on the best ways you can lower your risk and lead a heart healthy lifestyle.

Are You Stuck in a Food Rut? Our supermarket shelves are stuffed full of thousands of different food lines but despite all this variety most of us are well and truly stuck in a food rut. We stick to a limited repertoire of tried and tested recipes and pretty much eat the same meals week in week out. Of course when you’re responsible for feeding a family (some of whom can be fussy) it’s easy and less time consuming to churn out what you know will be eaten than to experiment with new dishes. However, whilst it might be easier eating the same foods all the time can leave you vulnerable to illness. Food ruts, even healthy ruts that include healthy fruit and veg, mean that you will be missing out on some important nutrients. It can also lead to cravings and over-eating caused by deprivation and boredom. So, if you feel like you’re just going through the motions at mealtimes, try these ideas for spicing up your diet:
16
• Buy seasonal fruit or vegies • Go to a deli or speciality shop • Each week make a point of buying a new ingredient you never usually buy eg. Make it a pineapple or beetroot week and force yourself to look for a new recipes. • Go foreign – have a Mexican, Chinese, Indian or French theme night • Experiment with a new cooking technique. • Experiment with marinades • Dedicate one meal a week to having fun. Turn the music on, have a glass of wine, get the kids involved • Buy a food magazine for some new inspiration • Switch ingredients. If you normally have banana on your cereal, choose blueberries one week. Spice up your salads with some different ingredients eg. corn, pine nuts, grated carrot, avocado, feta cheese, grapes, herbs, seeds, olives. And, bored of your usual boring old lettuce? Try mixing it with baby spinach leaves or rocket.

Nerve Impulses: Let the orchestra play By Dr. Allen Bonilla DC (USA)
Just as the individual strings of a well-tuned violin each participate in the making of a symphony, your body is composed of many different players working in harmony to make you you. From individual cells and organs to entire organ systems – the crux of true health depends not just on how each piece works as a unit but how they perform as a cohesive whole. As a conductor ensures that the brass does not overpower the woodwinds and that the string section performs in perfect time with the percussion, your nervous system controls the trillions of pieces and processes that make you you. Just the act of eating an apple requires a tremendous feat of organisation and precision. From the muscles of your jaw and salivary glands to the redirection of blood from limbs and head towards organs of digestion, it’s a symphony of bodily functions. It’s hard to fathom an orchestra without a conductor but it’s likely that the timing would be loose, the balance skewed and the affect less impactful. Similarly, when the nerve impulses orchestrating our bodily functions are compromised by spinal misalignment, the health of your body as a whole can only be less than optimal.
www.pakmag.com.au
Chiropractors, by removing nerve interference resulting from spinal misalignments, help the body function at all levels at its very best. We have all seen how powerful music can be in linking together the elements of a movie for instance– think of the score to your favorite movie and how the director uses music to steer your emotions and help the story evolve. And yet, this orchestral music is in the background so you’re barely aware of it. Similarly there are millions of processes happening in your body right now that act to make you function as you do but you’re not aware of them. In order to function at your best, to make your story more impactful and so that you can be you, it is important to let your inner conductor free to do it’s magic. Nerve interference is a commonly neglected area of health, especially when there are no outright symptoms, but it can interfere with this. Remember, there’s a big difference between being symptom free and optimal in health.

Easter Egg Bikkies Method Easter Egg Bikkies Ingredients • 200g white chocolate melts • 25 milk arrowroot biscuits • Coloured sprinkles, to decorate (different colours)
Easter Birds’ Nests Ingredients • 9 shredded wheatmeal biscuits • 4 53g tub Creamy Deluxe Milk Chocolate Fudge Frosting • 1 1/2 tablespoons shredded coconut • E aster eggs, to decorate (we used nut M & M’s)
1. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl and place in the microwave as directed. 2. Use a small palette knife or butter knife to spread chocolate over 1 biscuit. Transfer to a wire rack. Carefully sprinkle 1 colour of sprinkles across the centre of the biscuit to form a wide stripe. Carefully sprinkle 2 other colours over either end of the biscuit to form 2 more stripes. Repeat with the remaining chocolate, biscuits and coloured sprinkles (if the remaining chocolate starts to set, repeat step 1). Set aside for 20 minutes or until the chocolate is completely set.
Easter Birds’ Nests Method Place 6 biscuits onto baking paper. Spread each with 1 tablespoon of frosting. Top with another biscuit and repeat.. 2. Spread 2 tablespoons of frosting over sides of each biscuit stack. Cover biscuit tops with a thick layer of frosting. 3. Using a spoon, make an indentation in frosting on top of each biscuit stack to form a ‘nest’. Fill each indentation with 1 teaspoon of coconut. Divide eggs between biscuit stacks. Stand for 30 minutes to allow icing to set. Serve.

BULLETIN #17 The totally amazing, incredible, fantastic adventures of Bopstar, Bree and the Boppers! Where there’s a SHOW that needs a GLOW, a SMARTY that needs a PARTY, Bree and the boppers are ready to entertain the people of Cairns! But when Trouble arises and there’s no one else to call, The Bopstars use their Super Special Powers and embark on Exciting Expeditions to protect and preserve.
FOREVER! TOGETHER! BOPSTARS! Bulletin: Part XVII
Last Edition: After capturing Crazy Jim, restraining his servant, ZORAN, and shutting down the CYCLONEA-FLOOD-A-MATIC machine, the three boppers decided to take a break and spent the rest of the day playing at the beach and enjoying the sun! However, it wasn’t long before the Boppers were back into action, a call came in from Bopstar at Headquarters and something was terribly wrong!
After therir quick trip from Cairns, the Boppers pulled up to 4 Mile Beach and scanned the horizon looking for the Coconut Cruiser. “Can you see it anywhere?” asked Trent. “Not yet!” stated Eleese. Moments later, Bree piped up “There it is guys! Just in front of Low Isles!” The Coconut Cruiser had been spotted and the Boppers now needed to decide how they were going to sneak aboard. “We need to get a boat, jet ski or something to get out there and save those people!” declared Eleese. “How about a submarine?” stated Trent, “A submarine?” replied Bree and Eleese simultaneously. “Yes, a submarine. That way we can get out there without them seeing us, get onto Low Isles undetected and figure out a strategy to climb aboard that boat!” clarified Trent. “You are right, that is a good idea. But, where will we find a submarine in Port Douglas?” Eleese asked.
“Boppers, we need your help!” stated Bopstar. “A large cruise ship has been taken over by a mysterious being claiming to be the most Evil, Diabolical & Ruthless villain in the World!” explained Bopstar. “We are not sure who it is but we need you to sneak aboard the Coconut Cruiser, anchored off Port Douglas, stop the mysterious villain and take back control of that cruise ship! Bopstar… out.” Eleese, Bree and Trent quickly packed up there belongings from the beach, jumped into the BopMobile and began their trip up the coast to Port Douglas.
Without wasting another moment, all three Boppers began to search town for a submarine. Boat shops, marine mechanics, bait shops, the yacht club and the marina mirage were explored but nothing was found. The Boppers were beginning to lose hope, when all of a sudden an old, grey haired man emerged from the shadows and spoke, “I hear you are looking for a submarine, well I have something for you to see!” To Be Continued…

Bouncy, Bouncy, Bounce!
The cute and cuddly - Rabbit! Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, found in several parts of the world. There are seven different genera in the family classified as rabbits, including the European rabbit, Cottontail rabbit, and the Amami rabbit which is an endangered species in Japan. There are many other species of rabbit, and these, along with pikas and hares, make up the order Lagomorpha. Rabbits are ground dwellers that live in environments ranging from desert to tropical forest and wetland. In the Eastern Hemisphere rabbits are found in Europe, portions of Central and Southern Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Sumatra, and Japan. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has been introduced to many locations around the world, and all breeds of domestic rabbit originate from the European. Rabbits have been a source of environmental problems when introduced into the wild by humans, especially in Australia. As a result of their appetites, and the rate at which they breed, wild rabbit depredation can be problematic for agriculture. Gassing, barriers (fences), shooting, snaring, and ferreting have been used to control rabbit populations.

Boy or Girl? Amanda Mathiot Explores the Hot Topic of Gender Selection. Preparing to conceive a child is usually as simple as a quick trip to the Doctor’s, some routine blood tests and taking your pre-natal vitamins, but for some couples who want a specific gender for their baby, simple baby making becomes a lot more complicated. The Shettles Technique, Micro Sort and DNA testing all are phrases that are very familiar to would-be parents who are hoping to try and improve the chances of achieving their desired gender. In Australia using IVF techniques for gender selection can only be done for medical or genetic reasons although it has been reported that some couples are travelling overseas to take part in complex IVF procedures that enable you to choose the sex of an implanted embryo. However, using natural ways of sex selection are more common and The Shettles Method is the most well known and widely used. Based on the fact that male sperm are smaller, weaker and faster then the female sperm, which are bigger, stronger but slow, Dr Shettles found that the following techniques could increase the chances of a couple choosing the sex of their baby.
For a boy: • Engage in baby-making activities on the day of ovulation, so the faster boy sperm can beat the slower female sperm to the egg. Chart your cycles using an Ovulation Prediction Kit (OPK) to more accurately pinpoint ovulation time.
For a girl: • Engage in lots of baby-making activities 2-4 days prior to ovulation. Since female sperm can survive longer, having sex outside of peak fertile times increases the chances of a girl. Of course, also be aware that following the girl method could make falling pregnant harder because you’re avoiding ovulation. • Get jiggy with it every day from the end of your period until 2 –4 days prior to ovulation. • Ladies should lie back in the missionary position and try not to enjoy it too much! If you have too much fun it makes the vagina more acidic and less favourable for girl sperms (why does it have to be less fun for a girl?!). According to Shettles, his methods for a boy have a success rate of 80-85% and the methods for a girl around 75-80%. Many people swear by it although some studies have suggested that Shettles doesn’t work and can even make falling pregnant harder. Gender selection will always be a hot topic of discussion but choosing the sex of your baby is a personal matter and couples who do have a strong preference for one particular gender and choose to try the Shettles Method should do so knowing that there are no guarantees. More importantly, make sure you explore the feelings that may arise if you don’t get what you wanted and find a way to accept whatever nature throws your way.
• Men should try and keep their trouser department cool by avoiding hot baths, spas and tight clothes or underwear. Loose boxer shorts are recommended. • Avoid horizontal jogging 4 –5 days prior to ovulation. • Get adventurous with your positions (ahem…aim for deeper penetration). • Women should ‘try’ and climax

Whooping Cough on the Rise Recently a 4-week old baby in NSW died of whooping cough. It was the first death in Australia from this disease since the early 1990’s but it has been on the increase as a result of adults failing to vaccinate. Throughout the north Queensland health district (which stretches from Torres Strait to Mackay) there were 240 cases in 2008, of which 147 occurred in the Cairns and Tablelands area. According to Queensland Health cases are continuing to be notified this year. Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that is particularly dangerous for young babies. The symptoms are similar to a cold but they quickly progress to a severe cough which includes the characteristic ‘whooping’ sound and vomiting at the end of a bout of coughing. Babies under 6 months are more at risk because they are more seriously affected by the disease than older children or adults and more likely to develop complications like pneumonia, inflammation of
the brain and convulsions. One in every 200 babies who contract whooping cough will die and it is most often spread to babies from family members who are not immunised. The whooping cough vaccine is combined together with diphtheria, tetanus and polio (DTPa-IPV) and is provided free for all babies at 2, 4 and 6 months of age with a booster shot at 4 years of age. However the protection provided by these vaccinations gradually reduces over time, leaving adolescents and adults potentially at risk of catching the disease. A single booster shot is provided free for adolescents at 15 years of age, or year 10 students if vaccinated in a school based vaccination program. Queensland Health has warned parents and family members to boost their immunity to whooping cough by receiving a booster shot but it is not funded by the government. Ask your doctor or child health nurse for more information
DENGUE FEVER – PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN The current Dengue outbreak is the worst on record and all 4 strains of the dengue virus are now present in the Far North which makes it particularly dangerous for anyone who has had Dengue Fever previously. Unfortunately children are part of the statistics and it is vital we all take steps to protect both them and ourselves and to help eliminate this fast spreading outbreak. In addition to keeping our yards free of mosquito breeding sites (regularly inspect your home and garden for anything that can hold stagnant water) we are advised to use personal insect repellents during daylight hours both inside and outside of the home. However it gets tricky when it comes to babies, toddlers and children since repellents containing DEET do not recommend their usage on children and when essential should only be applied to a small area of skin and never for prolonged periods. If you’ve ever bothered to read the instructions on the back of common brands of insect repelIents you’ll have noticed how potentially toxic they are. They advise against contact with spectacle frames, other plastics, leather and synthetic fabrics and yet they’re ok to spray on your skin as long as you take care to wash your hands afterwards! The odourless products are even worse because they use yet another toxic chemical to mask the smell. So, given that we need to use repellents regularly during this
36
outbreak can we be sure that consistent exposure is not also doing harm to Mum and Dad too. There are now some safe products available that use blends of essential oils and which are also effective at keeping the mozzies at bay. Local Mum Tammy Parsons has created her own Natural Miracles Insect Repellent which is 99.5% natural, containing .05% preservative to ensure a quality and bacteria free product. It uses a blend of essential oils in a moisturising base derived from Almond, Palm and Coconut Oils. Natural Miracles is available at Coco Boo, Juniors and Baby Equipment Hire North Cairns. Anything to declare? Justine Johnson relives her first experiences with toddler motion sickness. Like most experiences with your first child, our first trip overseas with our 18 month old da ughter was a major learning curve. Both of us have globe-trotted many times but nothing could prepare us for the trepidation of taking our daughter with us on a trip to New Zealand (which, by the way, is a great destination for kids). It started well. She handled the two flights there with no difficulty and received compliments from all the flight crew for being so well behaved. Meanwhile the toddler in the row in front of us got motion sickness and threw up all over her parents and the seats (note to self : always take a spare set of clothes for parents as well as the child!). It was a major clean up operation and throughout it all we smugly smiled at our sleeping angel and thanked the stars for our good fortune. We arrived in Christchurch at almost midnight and joined several hundred other people in the immigration queue. Our daughter was quiet and lethargic which we expected given the fact that it was well in to her bed time. As we progressed in the queue I began to feel a little anxious, my mummy-senses were tingling but I couldn’t determine why. At the head of the queue, just as we were handing over our passports and being welcomed in to the country, my docile baby suddenly lurched and let out the most enormous pewk you’ve ever seen. There I stood in front of a crowd of gawping strangers covered in vomit. There was a hushed silence apart from one lone voice: “Yuk Mummy…that baby’s just been sick”. Sensing the next wave of nausea approaching I had no time to feel embarrassed and began desperately looking around for a bin or somewhere to aim my poor baby’s head. However, thanks to terrorists they don’t have bins in airports
38
anymore so I had to make do with nipping behind the immigration officers cubicle and aiming my daughter at the patterned carpet. It wasn’t pretty. As if all this wasn’t bad enough we were then set upon by a group of customs officers with sniffer dogs! “Madam, have you brought any fruit or vegetables in to the country with you?” they barked. I looked down at the splatter of regurgitated bananas and grapes and ham and seaweed crackers on the carpet and wondered about what a stupid question it was. “Well, in a manner of speaking” I replied whilst pointing at the offending mess. Incidentally, being covered in vomit is the best way to ensure a quick access through customs. Luckily our daughter recovered well after a couple of rest days in Christchurch and we set off on our road trip around the south island. It didn’t take too long before the whole of the back half of the car was covered in vomit (babies can projectile vomit a surprisingly long way) and we began to realise that our daughter suffers from motion sickness. Thereafter the trip became an important learning experience: 1) Always carry a second change of clothes with you 2) Always take lots of wet wipes to remove half digested banana from car seats and 3) when they absolutely refuse to put on any clothes in the morning they’ve well and truly had enough of being in the car! Happy Travelling!

Are We There Yet? Road Trips with the Kids By Elaine Seager
Australia is road trip heaven and yet because it’s such a vast country it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not bother trying to discover any of it. However, now that the cooler weather is heading our way it’s time to start thinking about stuffing the kids, dogs and tents in the car and venturing out in to this vast country of ours. If you’re lacking inspiration, get the maps out and let the kids help you choose where to go or even better, blindfold one of them and do a version of ‘pin the tail on the donkey’. Since most of the year we are coast dwellers, we decided it was time to check out the outback so here are a few ideas to get you started:
Go West Is it time you showed your kids the Outback? Yes, there’s a reason most of us choose to live in the luscious green tropics but since most of our country is desert it is an important part of our cultural heritage. And, it’s easily accessible, just head west from Mareeba and you could be on a different planet. Luckily, not too far way, there are a few points of interest for the kids to see including Undara, Cobbold Gorge and Chillagoe.
Inland Loop to Townsville Another alternative if you go a bit further south after Undara is to head to Townsville via Porcupine Gorge and Charters Towers just for something different. Don’t fancy Townsville? Well, you could always head for the beach on Maggie Island.
Cosmos Observatory For those contemplating a really big road trip during the holidays, the Cosmos Observatory near Charleville is slightly off the beaten track but for anyone with a fascination with stars this is a magical ‘must-see’ trip. It may be remote but being out in the middle of the desert is ideal star-gazing territory and adds to the magic of looking out in to the Universe on a clear night sky. Look through hugely powerful telescopes to see star clusters and the distinctive craters of the Moon. Find out how fast a light year can travel, how big the galaxy is and what it looks like, how many stars there are, how big and what colour they are, how many moons Saturn and Jupiter have, what planets are made of and lots more. Get your kids the answers to those questions you can’t answer! Whilst some people might say that the best way to take road trips with the kids is to get someone else to drive them in a separate car or just go by plane, they are also a great family bonding experience. There’s nothing quite like being cooped up for hours together in a car to forge the family bonds. However, having said it can also test your nerves and patience if you allow the back seat passengers to get bored, so lots of planning and preparation are necessary to create a smoothe and enjoyable journey for everyone.
Outback Dinosaur Country Another option for going out west and a longer trip is to head out to Winton which is most famously known as the place where Banjo Patterson wrote Waltzing Matilda. More importantly perhaps for the kids, Hughenden to Winton is otherwise known as Dinosaur Country after Australia’s largest dinosaur skeleton was found near there in 1999. About 110kms south west of Winton you can visit the Lake Quarry Conservation Park and see the footprints of a dinosaur stampede and in Hughenden there is the Dinosaur Display Centre. Also expect swimming and fishing to be on your agenda.

These are our top tips for surviving long road trips with the kids: 1. Leave very early in the morning so you can get a few hours in before stopping for breakfast. 2. Have a new surprise toy/game for them to play with for the journey. 3. If you don’t have one already, get a portable DVD player. These are indispensable on long journeys and will keep the kids entertained for hours. 4. Take lots of food and drinks for snacks along the way (inc. a few extras for bribes). Keep the esky handy in the car, so you can just reach in and give them something. 5. Stop at nice rest areas for breaks and to eat meals. 6. Plan on stopping every 3-4 hours, especially if you’re travelling with small kids. 7. Have lots of games and trivia questions handy inc. a few on areas that you’ll be passing through. 8. Pre-book accommodation to avoid the stress of trying to find somewhere at the end of a long day in the car 9. Take wipes & wipes for clean-ups, especially if Dad decides to get ice-creams. 10. Have balls, skipping ropes and any other devices for getting your kids exercising during pitstops. Have fun! a trip to...
Green Island
By Emily Thomson
It’s when I occasionally take a daytrip to a nearby tropical island like Green Island that I truly appreciate living in the Far North. Only a 45 minute ride by catamaran and you can spend the day lazing on a golden beach, exploring turquoise waters teeming with colourful fish and strolling through a rainforest environment. All of it within easy access on a small nearby island - we really do live in paradise. As far as family day trips are concerned Green Island is the perfect family beach day and a great way for the kids to start snorkelling and seeing coral and fish underwater from the relative safety of a beach. It also enables them to learn in an easy environment where they can still put their feet on the ground. The whole focal point for a day on Green Island is the ocean so snorkel gear is essential for older kids and smaller ones can have just as much fun with goggles and floats. They will absolutely love it and are pretty much guaranteed to see fish even if they’re not necessarily Nemo. We went to Green Island with Great Adventures and decided to take the early boat at 8.30am. It was a beautiful clear day and the water so calm that we arrived 20 minutes early. We headed straight for the beach on the opposite side of the island from the pier which was empty and began making and jumping on sandcastles until we got bored of rebuilding them. Then it was time to get our stinger suits on and to explore the island offshore. As a part of the package you also get to take a 25 minute ride on the glass bottomed boat which is an excellent way to see the coral gardens surrounding the island. We saw heaps of fish and coral.

By midday it was getting hot so we took refuge by the pool. The adults chatted happily on shaded sunloungers with a beer in hand from the pool bar and the kids got even more wrinkley in the pool. By the time lunchtime came around we had built up quite an appetite and decided to eat at the Island Resort’s excellent restaurant, Emeralds. Their menu has a great range
42
of reasonably priced meals ($15-20) including BLT’s, steak sandwiches, fish and calamari. There are several other options for lunch on the island including a buffet lunch or you could even bring your own esky for a picnic on the beach. Before we boarded our boat back home we walked along the pier and went down in to the Underwater Observatory for one last opportunity to see some fish and we actually managed to see the resident Nemo. We travelled on the Great Adventures Eco-Adventure Tour. Locals can receive a 30% locals discount on all Great Adventures cruises if you show local ID. Prices for the Green Island Eco Adventure (valid from 1 April) are $73 Adults, $36.50 Kids, Family Fare (2 adults and 2 kids) $183. Kids 4 - 14 are inclusive. Children 3 and under are free.

In fact because of the chemicals contained within it, it can cause illness or even death if it’s fed to a dog. The problem with chocolate is a compound called theobromine, which is a cardiac stimulant and diuretic and can cause a dog to become overexcited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may also become extremely thirsty and pass large volumes of urine. Vomiting and diarrhea are also common but it’s the effect of theobromine on the heart that is most dangerous. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or it could cause the heart to beat irregularly. So you could quite literally inflict death by chocolate if you’re too kind and share your Easter treats with pooch. The thing to be aware of is that if a dog does eat chocolate the signs of sickness may not appear for several hours afterwards so do not give them a little piece and then lots more because they look ok!
Any form of chocolate is bad for dogs with cocoa powder and cooking chocolate being the most toxic forms. If a 10-kilogram dog ate half a 250g block of cooking chocolate it would be seriously affected and smaller dogs only need to eat a small amount to make them ill so even licking the chocolate icing off a mud cake could cause problems. Be aware, keep your pooch’s nose from sniffing around chocolate in your cupboards and be careful if the kids leave chocolate lying around the house. So as much as our pets are part of the family, we cannot assume that human food is always safe for pets. But since Easter is a family occasion it’s a good idea to involve your pooch by buying them some special treats of their own. Doggie chocolate is available so why not pop in to one of our parlours to pick up an Easter treat for pooch. You could even hide them in the family Easter egg hunt - they will love it. Happy Easter from all of us at Poochies!

Easter Bunny Mask By Amanda Mathiot
Are you looking for fun, interesting crafts to do this Easter? Why not make this Easter Bunny Mask. The kids will love the different textures of the wool, feathers and crepe paper. Great news is…it’s so easy to make! With just a little cutting, gluing, painting and scrunching your little one will be hopping around the backyard looking like the cutest little Easter bunny in town.
You will need:
- A piece of lightweight cardboard or a paper plate in the shape of a circle for the face and two ear shapes. - Pipe cleaners for whiskers - Medium sized pink pom pom for nose. - A small feather Boer or cotton wool balls can be used. - Pink crepe paper - Paint - Paint brushes - Craft glue - Elastic - Scissors - Lead pencil
Steps: 1. First up you will need to cut out the shape of the rabbits face. Using a pre cut circle (size of child’s face) or the paper plate cut a triangle out of the bottom for the mouth. Then cut two eyeholes. If this sounds a bit complicated don’t worry. Children will not mind if their eyeholes aren’t cut perfectly, all that matters is they are doing craft and it’s a nice activity to do together. 2. Cut out two ears. Pointy at the top, long and bunny rabbit style. Around 15cms long. Again, don’t stress if they aren’t perfect, it all gets covered up with crepe paper and wool or feathers. 3. Now the fun part. Mix up your paints and get your little one to paint their mask face whatever colour they choose. We chose Pink. 4. Leave the face to dry. 5. Now onto the ears. Start ripping up the crepe paper and scrunch. 6. Glue the scrunched up paper onto the ears. Leave a row around the edge for where the feathers or wool goes. I found it easier to draw a guide for my little one. So he knew where he could glue. Don’t forget to leave a row at the bottom of the ears so you have room to glue it onto the face. 7. Once both ears have the crepe paper glued on, it’s time to add the Boer or cotton wool if you don’t have the feathers. 8. Glue around the edges of the ears to add lovely texture. 9. Now the face should be dried and once the ears are dry glue or staple the ears to the face. Be careful while the ears dry, they do get heavy and will fall off. It’s best if the mask is left flat while the nose and whiskers are glued on. 10. With a lot of glue, in the centre of the facemask, glue on the whiskers. Again, using lots of glue so our noses don’t fall off, glue on the pom pom for the nose over the whiskers. · Leave to dry. 11. Attach some elastic to the sides. 12. Wear and hop around.

Vocal Boot Camp: Exercise for your Vocal Cords Boot Camps have become quite the rage over the last few years and usually involve someone barking orders at you as you do Army exercises on the beach. However, two local women have joined forces recently to create an altogether different kind of Boot Camp, it’s a Boot Camp aimed at getting your vocals in to shape. Gail Rogers, a Speech & Language Pathologist and Katerini Manolatos, a Singing Teacher and Music Therapist, have combined their skills to create an innovative Vocal Boot Camp which is targeted at anyone who has an interest in using their voice professionally. So many well known singers and performers have suffered from vocal problems after years of abusing their voices that many take the step of taking out insurance to safeguard their potential loss of earnings. But of course, it doesn’t just affect rock stars. Apparently, statistics show that 60% of professional voice users (including teachers, TV presenters, radio announcers, barristers, preachers, auctioneers and public speakers) experience a vocal disorder at some stage in their life including vocal nodules, diplophonia (false vocal cord use), laryngitis, polyps, spasmodic dysphonia, inflammation and bowing. Voices are a precious instrument and just like athletes, those who use their voices professionally need to learn how it works, how to get the best out of it and how to protect it. Vocal abuse or misuse can occur in many ways and includes abusive and prolonged use of your voice (especially when emotional), inappropriate pitch use, frequent throat clearing, coughing, shouting, cheering, harsh or strained phonation, whispering, head & neck tension, laryngeal constriction, talking above noise, over distances or excessively, grunting, laughing, speaking for prolonged periods in dry, airconditioned, dusty, smoky or toxic environments. And, most detrimental of all, is continuing with all of the above when you’re sick with colds and flu. Most people know when they’ve overdone it when they start losing their voice but abused vocal
48
cords can also let you know you have a problem by giving you other symptoms such as reflux effects, a quiet husky, breathy voice quality, inappropriate pitch changes, frequent throat clearing and coughing. If these occur you should rest your voice and seek professional help. If you or one of your children is interested in using your voice professionally, Gail suggests taking vocal care seriously and offers the following tips to start taking care of your voice: 1. Drink lots of water and limit your alcohol and caffeine intake 2. Avoid exposure to smoking & chemicals 3. Use humidification 4. Rest your voice, especially when you’re tired or stressed 5. Use amplification when necessary 6. Eat a balanced diet 7. Minimise throat clearing 8. Don’t talk too much! 9. Chew gum or suck lozenges 10. Stretch your vocal cords in the morning and afternoon Gail and Katerini’s Vocal Boot Camp is available to both children and adults who are aspiring professional voice users. They teach how the voice works, the do's and don'ts of voice care & protection, new ways of breathing with diaphragmatic breathing techniques and other ways to ensure that you keep your voice skills robust. The program mixes theory with practical exercises. Contact: Gail Rogers SLP Mobile #0412 906 241 and Katerini Manalatos Music therapist and singing teacher Mobile #040 2200 745

Trinity Beach Tavern By Nathan Dainney
Endless ocean views, chic modern decor, exquisite food and yet still the perfect place to be bring the kids... The Trinity Beach Tavern’s commitment to restaurant entertainment would leave any fresh eyed young child gasping with excitement. Don’t get me wrong, the food is great but when you have six flat screen plasmas with Sony PlayStation staring you in the face the nuggets can wait! This makes it the perfect place for a peaceful meal out for Mum & Dad without having to worry about a babysitter. The Jelly Bean Kids Club’s has giant plasmas playing the latest cartoons and movies as well as the big colouring-in table and plush bean bags. And, on Saturday Nights between 5.30-7.30pm there is face painting and a balloon sculptor and the kids eat free! The Trinity Beach Tavern has recently renovated its menu and added greater variety, cheaper prices and monthly specials. Not only that but having been there only a month ago prior to the menu change I can testify to the fact that the food itself has also been improved. We ordered the Caesar salad with salt & pepper squid on top which was fresh and full of flavour as well as Lamb Korma with an array of fresh beautiful herbs and slivered almonds over a tasty curry gravy, crispy skin salmon on a bed of wasabi vinaigrette soba noodles and crumbed Camembert with plum dipping sauce. They were all delicious. The restaurants
50
signature dish is the Trinity Beach Chicken which is a chicken breast stacked with 3 grilled prawns, potato rosti and seared spinach topped with a creamy avocado sauce. Yum. With the kids woofing down their generous serving of crumbed chicken and chips and now well on their way to slaying the sleeping dragon on a PlayStation, there was only one last thing to do. Bring out the dessert. We decided unanimously on the chocolate share plate off the specials list which included white chocolate cheesecake with caramel sauce, fresh chocolate mousse and Mmmmm mud cake and ice cream. Suffice to say I have begged Rick to leave this on the regular menu so that you can try it too (make sure you ask for it!). The Trinity Beach Tavern is the perfect place for family dining. The restaurant is open 7 days 11am –9pm and the Bar/Club is open between 10am -12pm. Local entertainment is provided Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoon from 2pm. And remember, kids eat free Saturday 5:30-7:30.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH THE BOAT THAT ROCKED* Comedy
*
From Richard Curtis the creator of many of Working Title’s most successful comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and Notting Hill comes this outrageous ‘semi-true’ film “The Boat That Rocked” an ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between the young people of the ‘60s and pop music. It’s about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz. The Count, a big, brash, American god of the airwaves; Quentin, the boss of Radio Rock -- a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea that’s populated by an eclectic crew of rock and roll DJs; Gavin, the greatest DJ in Britain who has just returned from his drug tour of America to reclaim his rightful position; Dave, an ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny co-broadcaster; and a fearsome British government official out for blood against the drug takers and lawbreakers of a once-great nation. Starring; Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson In cinemas April 9, 2009

Time for a break Zen Teachings 1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me for the path is narrow. In fact, just bugger off and leave me alone. 2. Always remember you’re unique. Just like everyone else. 3. Never test the depth of the water with both feet. 4. If you think nobody cares whether you’re alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments. 5. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes. 6. If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you. 7. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. 8. If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably well worth it. 9. If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything. 10. Some days you are the bug; some days you are the wind screen. 11. Good judgment comes from bad experience ... and most of that comes from bad judgment. 12. A closed mouth gathers no foot. 13. There are two excellent theories for arguing with women. Neither one works. 14. Generally speaking, you aren’t learning much when your lips are moving. 15. Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it. 16. We are born naked, wet and hungry, and get slapped on our ass ... then things just keep getting worse. 17. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
