08 publishers note Hello and welcome to the 48th edition of PakMag, our very special 4th birthday edition. Wow, I can’t believe it’s been four years. Creating PakMag has been one of the most challenging and yet rewarding things I have ever done. Thanks so much to all our readers, businesses, and community groups who have supported us and made it such a vital and popular resource for local families, we couldn’t have done it without you. The biggest thank you must go to my team and of course, my wonderful, patient, supportive husband Trent as well as all those other friends and family who’ve helped keep me sane (almost!). By the time you read this it’ll be only 4 weeks until baby no. 2 arrives so I’d really better start getting myself organised! This second pregnancy has certainly not been as easy as the first and it’s funny how much more nonchalant you are with the second when so much time is still taken up doting on the first. We really hope you enjoy this edition, and hope to see you at one of our many events this month. Until then, happy reading, and don’t forget to tell everyone - you read it in PakMag.

Parents are tending to ask what they can do themselves, independent of schools, to best support their child’s education and some see tuition as an investment. According to Mr Dhall tutors can act as

If, on the other hand, consequences change from day to day, how can children learn the rules of the home, let alone the outside world? Inconsistency causes confusion in children, which, in turn, may be misinterpreted by adults as disobedience. Sara, a mum of a three year old, admits she struggled with being consistent. “When my daughter misbehaved, I would try reasoning first, then a naughty corner, timeouts in her room, taking a toy away etc but nothing seemed to work. I felt so frustrated and helpless.” This is a problem many parents encounter. It can be difficult to know what the appropriate consequence to use is, and when it should be applied.
Tips for creating consistency [1] Have a simple plan that’s easy to remember. If you have to juggle too many different strategies and consequences, you increase the risk of being inconsistent. It also makes it difficult for your child to predict what the outcomes of their choices will be.

buying footwear Make sure that your child’s shoes are symmetrical when you buy them. Not too long ago I had a young patient at my clinic complaining of painful ankles. While examining their walking pattern, foot range of motion, muscle strength and flexibility, I enquired about the type of footwear they use on a day-to-day basis, for general use and for sports.

This is especially important for children as they are still developing. If their footwear is throwing their foot the wrong way, their lower limb development will be negatively affected. So, when you’re buying shoes it’s important to remember to place both shoes on a flat surface to check that they’re symmetrical. Look at them

Surviving Vomiting
thanks to Dr Julia Driscoll
Vomiting is a common symptom of lots of things. Some children are born “chuckers” and may vomit from nothing more than overtiredness or an unfamiliar taste but the common sources of vomiting are frequently viral and may last a couple of days. The best treatment is fluids and medicine to treat any fever. When children can’t keep anything down

active kids Did you know children and adolescents need to be active for at least 60 mins a day to be healthy? This means engaging in moderate or vigorous activities like running, walking, cycling, swimming or playing sport. Yet research is suggesting that children are becoming less and less active. As a parent the most effective way to help your child enjoy being active is to be a good role model so find ways for your family to enjoy being physically active together. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune – try making some of these ideas a part of your family routine:
2006 found that only 16.5 % (boys) and 6.5% (girls) in Year One and 12.5% (boys) and 4.8% (girls) in Year Ten achieved the 60 min daily target for physical activity. This same survey

skin infection. Caused by the herpes simplex virus it is highly contagious and can be spread via general household items such as face towels as
light and sunburn, windburn, some food allergies and excessive rubbing of the skin. The best way to deal with a cold sore is to keep them dry and clean; this tends to speed up the healing time to a number of days rather than weeks and can be achieved by using lip balms or Vaseline. Lysine and antiviral creams such as Zovirax also work well as treatments.

Method
Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease an 18cm x 28cm slice pan. In a large bowl, combine oats, sugar, coconut and sifted flours. Heat butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan on low heat for 1-2 minutes, until butter has melted and mixture is well combined. Make a well in centre of dry ingredients. Trudie Trewin Story thanks to Amanda Cranston

TT: Yes I have a whole drawer full of rejection
TT: Growing up, it wasn’t something I considered seriously as an occupation, apart from briefly flirting with the idea of becoming a journalist. Over the years I have written here and there but never imagined I would be a children’s writer. It was a random comment from a co-worker that started me thinking about writing for kids and then I discovered it was way more fun than writing for adults. My first job was actually in a bank but I definitely prefer working with words than numbers. PM: What is the first story you ever had published? TT: A short novel called Stowaway which is about a girl who hides in the back of her aunt’s

Time for a break jokes
Being a parent changes everything. But being a parent also changes with each baby. Here are some of the ways having a second and third child is different from having your first.
Pacifier
Diapering
1st Baby: If the pacifier falls on the floor, you put it away until you can go home and wash and boil it.
1st Baby: You change your baby’s diapers every hour, whether they need it or not.
2nd Baby: When the pacifier falls on the floor, you squirt it off with some juice from the baby’s bottle.
2nd Baby: You change their diaper every 2 to 3 hours, if needed.
3rd Baby: You wipe it off on your shirt and pop it back in.
3rd Baby: You try to change their diaper before you see it sagging to their knees.
