One tradition that I actually like from the States is Thanksgiving. I love that they have a dedicated day where everyone gets together and gives thanks. I know many families give thanks every day, but many of us don’t give it much thought. This month I am going to be giving thanks every day, I hope you join me! I’m going to start now. One of the things that I really want to give thanks to is all the people who have ever made the time to write to me, or my team about how much they love what we do. You have no idea how much my team love getting these messages and letters. We have a very special place for them, so please keep sending them in. We really, really love getting them. We’ve been getting a lot from dads and grandparents too, which makes us really happy to know that we are reaching the whole family. Being thankful and grateful for all the things we have in our lives makes such a difference. In the lead in to the silly season where it’s an overload of messages to buy and get more, I truly hope you take time to think about being grateful for what you already have, and help your children to care more about giving than receiving. If you have any ideas or feedback please send it in, we’d love to hear from you. Until next time, have a great month and don’t forget to tell everyone, you read it in PakMag

The Thing Is
The Thing Is... STORY Bree James One of the things that hurts my heart is seeing people with so much lost-potential - people who know they want more out of their life, but they don’t know where to start. So, they remain stuck on the hamster wheel. Overwhelmed. Off track. Shining a little less bright than they used to, or want to. It happens to pretty much all of us at one stage or another. After all, we can’t shine brightly ALL the time. But the thing is, life is a journey. If you are unhappy with your life, it may be because you are not living the vision you have in your head of how you believe your life should be. Maybe it’s because you’re going through a change. Maybe it’s because you desire some change. Maybe it’s because life has just gone too fast and you’re not feeling like you’re on the right path. If you’re not “feeling it”, what can you do about it? Complain? Mope? Eat ALL the chocolate? Sure, but, at the end of the day, your happiness and the joy in your life falls on one thing. Not complaints. Or chocolate. It falls on you. Sure, there are always going to be people, situations and things that challenge our lives. We can’t be happy all the time, we know that. But I think to be happy within ourselves there are three things we need to nail. 1. You are happy with who you are. 2. You are using your talents. 3. You are living the vision you see for your life. Achieve all three then, well, that ooey gooey happiness may just ooze out of you. We may not be able to nail these three things at once all the time. If we could, we’d all be happier than a kid eating whatever they want from a dessert buffet. But, hey, we can try.
Your talents? We all have them. Most of you know that I am a singer and if I am not doing gigs, I get mopey. I may not get time to do gigs often, which means lots of singing in the shower! You may be really artistic, an amazing organiser, or incredible cook. Try and ensure you are using your talents as often as you can. They make you feel great. And your vision for your life? This is a tricky one. What I find is, with most people, this vision is very blurred. It’s unclear, it’s missing or it’s in our heads and we can’t seem to make sense of it. I know what you are thinking. “Bree, I’m too busy surviving parenthood right now. It’s Groundhog Day and I can’t see that changing til 2030”. I hear you. I get it. But do yourself a favour, put pen to paper and start thinking about these three questions. It will really take a load off your brain in the long run. Sure, there is more to happiness than the above, such as being grateful for what we have and who we are. However the three things above is what I believe gets most people unstuck, myself included. I encourage you to take some time and start thinking about your vision for your life and putting it on paper. Statistics show that out of 100 people, 80 of them won’t have any goals, 16 have goals but don’t write them down, three have goals but don’t review them and only one out of 100 will write down their goals and review them regularly. Be that one. If you want help with setting your vision, check out my new Vision Book or Vision Voyage at www.breejames.com/visionbook. I’d love to help you.
If you aren’t happy with who you are, it’s time to do something about it. No ifs, ands or buts. If you can’t love yourself, it’s really hard for others to love you too.

LOCAL FARMING FAMILIES Raising a family whilst running a farm is an around the clock commitment. PakMag recently spoke to a few local farming families and asked them to share their stories about farm life, from the challenges to the funniest moments and everything in between.
The Clark Family The brave that do it all – Alexandra and Graham Clark are both full time workers, farming in their spare time. The Clarks live in East Palmerston and have been farming beef for the last two years. They love living in paradise with regular visits from Graham's daughter Sophie (four). Both working full time, Alexandra and Graham struggle to find enough time for farm work and work on home
renovations. However, the positives of living on a farm definitely outweigh the negatives for this family. Alexandra and Graham explained to PakMag some of the best parts of living on a farm. “Spending time with animals – We have four horses, 73 head of cattle and two dogs. We love living in paradise and being able to jump on the four-wheeler”, they explained. “Picking fruits from our trees, going for a swim in our creeks, teaching Sophie how to help out on the farm to round up cattle and take care of the horses. Also, being able to have your peace without the suburban noise that use to surround us in town neighbourhoods. We also love our little community in our street. Everyone helps everyone.” When Sophie comes to visit the farm, there’s no shortage of fun. “She loves the farm life. Always something to do, no boredom, and she loves playing with the neighbours’ kids and her cousins who reside just next door.” However, the horses take the cake. “She loves the horses the most, the fact that she can cuddle and ride them whenever she likes.” Sophie is constantly looking forward to her next visit, and the family loves life on the farm.

The Lorenzo Family Parents Maria and Jon Lorenzo made the move to Lakeland 25 years ago. Just five years later they decided to take the leap and buy a farm. To this very day, the Lorenzos continue to farm, only now they have some extra help from their children Ruben (22) and Natalia (14). For the last 20 years, the Lorenzos have been farming certified organic bananas, papayas, passionfruit and limes as well as a newly planted crop of avocados. They also produce delicious jams and chilli sauces from their own produce for their Farm Gate Market stall. We asked Maria what was the best thing about living on the farm. “The enjoyment of growing our own food and knowing what we are eating. Also growing natural, healthy, organic produce for others to buy,” she told PakMag. Living in a very dry climate with unpredictable weather is a constant challenge that the Lorenzos face. The fluctuation in pricing and consumer demand for organic produce has also made their farming journey difficult at times. However, living on the farm has been an eyeopening experience for the kids. “Natalia loves the farm because she learns life skills and enjoys all the animals. Ruben enjoys the peace and quiet and the space for gardening.” Although demanding work, farming has been a way of keeping the family fit and healthy. “Being able to see the sunrise and sunset every day is enjoyable and relaxing,” Maria explained. Even though there are seemingly never enough hours in the day for Maria and her family, they love doing what they do.
The Watson Family Dan grew up on the Mungalli Creek Bio-Dairy farm in Millaa Millaa with his mum, dad and siblings Rob, Ross, Janet and Jamie. Together with his wife Karen, he is now raising his own family there and his children Lily (ten), Izzy (eight), Luke (seven), and Ben (four), completely love the farm life. One of Dan’s favourite parts of living on a farm is being his own boss. “It’s nice to be doing things I enjoy. It's great not having to wear shoes or fancy clothes,” he told PakMag. “I like the quiet, having lots of family time, and fresh milk of course.” The kids love farm life too, their favourite activities being riding their bikes whenever they want, having creeks close by to play in, going for walks with mum and of course, going with dad to do farm jobs. The farm itself is one big living organism. The property is part rainforest, meaning they get to see lots of wildlife such as tree kangaroos, platypus, wallabies, bandicoots, frogs and cassowaries. There have been some funny moments through the years. “It’s always pretty funny when anyone gets splattered with cow poo,” Dan recalls. However, living on a farm comes with some challenges. “Relying on the weather can be challenging,” Dan explained. “As is travelling time, and getting the kids to activities in nearby towns.” In conclusion, as told by the kids, they think living on a farm is “great, great, great!” and they wouldn’t have it any other way. You can visit the farm and try some of the family’s delicious biodynamic dairy products at the Farmhouse Café at Mungalli Creek, or at your favourite grocer throughout Australia.

Support Local
Benefits of buying local The importance of buying local produce, gifts and household products is a strong focus in areas all around the world. We’re all encouraged to do it more, but why? It carries numerous benefits including supporting local families and having a lower environmental impact, so let’s go over a few benefits of buying local. Supports Local Families Your purchase will help a child go to school, help a mum pay off her car or help a family save for a holiday, rather than helping a millionaire buy another mansion. It’s a good feeling knowing you’ve made a difference in the local community, no matter how small. Creates Connections Buying local helps foster a greater sense of community, as you stay engaged with local farms and businesses. You never know; you may even make new friends if you shop at the same local food stall every week, or build up a positive relationship and get recommendations for other awesome local vendors. One of a Kind Gifts purchased from a local vendor are often handmade. A lot of thought, creativity and love has gone into these pieces, and chances are, there is no other item in the world exactly like yours. It’s a great way to find something that is truly unique and of great quality, seeing as it is not mass produced.
Supports the Local Economy Most of the money spent at local businesses stays close to home, and is usually reinvested in the community. You’ll often pay with cash, which carries a number of benefits. Banks often charge businesses a small fee for processing transactions, and counting out the physical cash makes you value it more. Plus, it’ll help you budget more efficiently and it won’t get you into debt since you won’t be using your credit card. Better for the Environment Buying from local vendors means the product travelled less distance to get to you, especially if it comes from a farm. All of that fuel used up by planes, ships and trucks to get the item to you contributes to global warming, so purchasing locally could make a world of difference. Plus, an added bonus is local fruits and veggies are usually not wrapped in unnecessary plastic. Foods are More Flavourful and Nutritious When buying local food, they’re picked at their peak of ripeness. Imported produce on the other hand is often harvested early in order to get it shipped and distributed to the stores. Sometimes, produce at local markets has been picked within 24 hoursof you purchasing it. Because the food hasn’t gone through a long travel process, there is also less risk of contamination.

Education
For the Love of Learning: Encouraging Learning in Kids STORY Jenna Galley In life, we are always learning. Whether it’s learning to walk, learning our times tables, learning to accept failure or learning how to do our jobs, our brains are naturally hungry for more knowledge. While it’s our job as parents to teach our children the many things that they need to know (not an easy feat!), it’s also important to encourage them to learn things for themselves. It's key that we show them that we love learning things for ourselves too. Where is the (Learning) Love? Babies and toddlers have an innate curiosity about the world around them, soaking up new information like
sponges. They love to investigate their surroundings and develop their abilities. However, somewhere along the way, this natural love for learning is often lost. This tends to happen during their school years when learning starts to feel like a job or a chore. There are books to read, tests to complete and skillsets to master, which can leave kids feeling overwhelmed and often dreading the thought of learning. Well, parents, it’s time to bring back the fun in learning and instil this innocent love of learning that our babies and toddlers knew so well. Here are a few ways to do this:
www.pakmag.com.au | November 2019 17
Education
Model a Love of Learning We are our children’s foremost teacher. Sure, they go to school, but the majority of learning happens at home, with us. If they see you furthering your learning, they may want to do it too. On the rare occasion when I actually sit down to read a book, my kids will often grab their own books and join me. I know my kids won’t do this forever – one day they will be teens and I won’t be ‘cool’ to hang out with anymore. But, for now, if I’m keen to try something new and expand my skillset, then the kids are usually on board too. Talk about things you are learning, and show them that you are always wanting to learn new things, whether that be trying a new recipe, researching a destination for your next holiday, or simply helping them with their science project. Show them that you love learning new things, and that you are inquisitive. Inquisitive minds love learning. Be Aware of How Children Learn Children and teens learn in five main ways: by seeing, hearing, exploring, experimenting and asking questions. Give them opportunities to do all five at home. Teach them to be Active Learners There are always opportunities to learn more. If your kids have a question and you don’t know the answer, look it up (Captain Google to the rescue). Your kids will soon want to do this themselves. Allowing them to seek out answers rather than just accepting that they don’t know is a great way to encourage your children to love learning.
Or, enrol them in PakMag's new online course for kids that teaches children how to master video recording. Email monique@pakmag.com.au to find out more. Learn through Experiences We learn new things by doing them, so get them out to explore. You don’t have to be constantly teaching them, asking them questions or grilling them about what they are learning. Let them explore, play and come to you with questions. This takes the pressure off and helps instil their sense of wanting to learn. Support their Schooling Some kids love school. Others do not. But, regardless of how they feel about it, they have to go. School teaches them so much more than just basic numeracy and literacy skills and, although it can be a bit tricky and tedious at times, it’s part of being a kid. Make the schooling experience positive by asking them about it, keeping up to date on what they are doing and, if you can, volunteering when they need parent helpers. Encourage Relaxation Time Too If your kids are getting burnt out, give them a break. We all need time to just chill out, give our minds a break and absorb everything. I will give my kids a ‘mental health day’ once or twice a year where they can stay home with me for the day, but only if they promise not to fight and to do something creative together. They always do and they always return to school the next day feeling a little more refreshed and ready to learn.
Think Outside the Book
Nurture their Curious Natures
Get creative at home by looking for ways to help further their skills in fun, exciting ways. I make treasure hunts in the backyard for my kids. With every clue, I’ll use maths equations that they need to solve in order to find the next clue. My kids absolutely love doing them and I love that they have to do maths (and work together) to uncover the prize.
The best way to bring back that innocent love of learning that our babies and toddlers possessed is to let our kids be kids.
Discover their Interests Help your child discover what they love doing, reading, writing and watching, and build on that. If your child is learning about a certain piece of history, take them to the museum. If they’re learning about ecosystems and native animals, take them to the zoo. If your child loves watching kids on YouTube, help them learn how to make their own videos (or at least teach them how to use the video function on the iPad without posting it to YouTube).
18 November 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au
Let them explore and experiment, even if it means a big mess to clean up. Encourage them to ask questions, even if you need to pull out the computer to find the answer (hey, at least it’s not an Encyclopedia). Let them do things for themselves, even if it takes FOREVER to get it done. Support their interests, no matter how quirky they are. Reassure them that it’s important to explore what we don’t know. Most importantly, remind them that you are always right there, ready to offer a helping hand if they get stuck. And don’t forget, monkey see, monkey do; role model a love of learning and your children will likely follow suit.

HANDMADE GIFTS THE KIDS WILL LOVE TO MAKE
HANDMADE PLAYDOUGH
FUNNY FACE PLANTERS
Ingredients
Ingredients
1 cup flour 2 tsp cream of tartar 1 cup water 1 tbsp sunflower oil Food colouring of your choice 1 airtight jar 20cm string
1 terra cotta pot Acrylic paint colours of your choice Paintbrushes Hot glue gun Dry pasta in assorted shapes Plant of your choice
Method Combine all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the water and sunflower oil and combine. Divide between a number of smaller bowls, depending on how many different colours you want. Add a few drops of desired food colouring to the small bowls and combine. When fully mixed, pour into a non-stick pan. Cook for about three minutes over medium heat, stirring often. When the mixture starts to draw away from the pan, it’s done. Let the playdough cool until you are able to handle it. Knead until smooth and place in an airtight jar. Attach a gift tag using string, and your gift is ready to go. PakMag Tip: You can also use natural dyes to colour your playdough. Try turmeric for yellow, matcha powder for green and blueberries for pink/purple. For extra sparkles, you can add glitter too.
Method Paint the outside of your terra cotta pot in the colour of your choice. Paint about five centimetres of the inside top as well. Put your pot somewhere safe and let it dry completely. Use your imagination to make some silly faces with pasta. Shells or penne can be a nose, macaroni can be eyes, spirals can be eyebrows or a mustache, farfalle can be a bow tie – there are endless possibilities. Decide which you will use, and paint them any colour you’d like. Once both the pot and pasta pieces are dry, use a hot glue gun (with help from a grown-up) to attach the pieces to the pot, assembling the face. Allow the glue to dry for several hours. Pot a lush plant in your colourful brand-new pot, or gift it as is. PakMag Tip: if you plan to use your pot outdoors, apply a coat of Mod Podge Outdoor to weatherproof it.

Save time and money while keeping the kids busy by letting them create their own wrapping paper. Making the wrapping paper can be just as fun as giving the gift itself. Here are a few methods you can use.
two eyes on it (you can use googly eyes to give them a bit of character). Using some glue or sticky tape, stick the balloon in between the ears and voila – suddenly, there’s an elephant in the room.

Potato Stamps
Lay down a solid-coloured wrapping paper (such as white or brown), break out the paints, dress the kids in old clothes and let their imaginations run wild on the paper. One-of-a-kind and super cute.
Cut a potato in half, draw a shape onto the surface (such as a heart, star or smiley face), get an adult to cut around the shape with a knife, and you’ve got your very own stamp. Dip it in paint and stamp on solid-coloured wrapping paper.
Confetti Paint thin layers of mod podge over plain white wrapping paper, and place confetti wherever you wish. Place a few random patches, make shapes or sprinkle them all over. Elephants Wrap your gift and draw the outline of an elephant using a black marker. Next, grab a balloon and stick

Health
Hormone Changes within Families STORY Jana Gorski, Calanna Wholehealth Pharmacy, BHsc.Nat, Natural Fertility Educator Many people cringe when ‘hormone changes’ are mentioned. But really, they are a fascinating and unique part of the human experience and don’t have to be uncomfortable or challenging. Women who bear children undergo the greatest number of changes to their bodies. Like women, men undergo sexual maturity gradually but experience their decline in fertility differently. Understanding the changes and how they affect us can help us support our family members. Puberty Humans are unique in the way we sexually mature. It’s certainly not usual in the animal world to sexually mature and stay actively fertile for an extended period of time. Nor is it common to reach puberty but take time to reach sexual maturity. While a male will become fertile around the age of 13, his peak fertility isn’t achieved until the late teens. Women, despite reaching menarche around the same age and looking like women for many years afterward, do not reach their peak fertility until their late teens also.
This remarkable change from child to adult actually begins in the womb with the development of our primary sexual characteristics and is sometimes referred to as minipuberty. In boys, it pauses after the first six months of life and in girls, continues as their ovarian follicles mature until ages three to four after which the process also pauses. As early as the age of six, the adrenal glands begin to increase their production of DHEA (the building block of our sex hormones) causing the skin to become oilier and hair to become coarser. This lays the groundwork for puberty to begin. It’s still unknown what triggers the hypothalamus to begin pumping gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) but its effect is to stimulate the pituitary to release luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These two hormones signal for the ovaries and testes to produce oestrogen and testosterone respectively, which trigger the physical changes seen in puberty. This begins at ages eight to 12 for girls and nine to 14 for boys, lasting around three to four years. In both males and females, earlier onset is associated with a number of health risks later in life.
www.pakmag.com.au | November 2019 25
Health
During all of these pubertal changes, hormones are often blamed for the mood swings and challenging behaviours that parents and caregivers of teenagers report. However, research shows the cause to be a reconstruction of synaptic pathways in the growing brain, elevated levels of stress caused by school, a shifting social awareness and pressures rather than simply hormones. A Woman’s Fertile Years A woman’s monthly cycle of egg development and release, uterine thickening and shedding is governed by the same hormones involved in puberty and provide a monthly opportunity for reproduction. The complexity of this cycle can give rise to many dysfunctions, making female reproductive disorders quite common. Oestrogen can support the production of serotonin and modify the action of endorphins so it is understandable that changes in mood, energy and libido in response to the monthly rise and fall of oestrogen are reported by 90 per cent of women. Pronounced changes that impact relationships and work is a diagnosable condition and much less common. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are the next significant hormonal shifts for the female body after puberty. The increase in oestrogen and progesterone drive the development of the womb, support growth of the foetus, breast tissue and increase absorption of nutrients through the gut. Post birth, the sudden drop in ovarian hormones and rise of lactogenic hormones is thought to play a part in the development of PostPartum Depression in susceptible women. Women experience one last shift in hormones as their ovarian reserve declines – Menopause. As the Hypothalamus and pituitary attempt with greater intensity to trigger ovulation, the balance of hormones is disrupted causing many of the symptoms of perimenopause. A blood test can confirm the state of menopause but a widely accepted marker is the absence of menstruation for 12 months.
After menopause, the fall of oestrogen is associated with changes to hair, skin and negatively impacts the density of bone. The body composition shifts, increasing in body fat and reducing muscle mass. Andropause in Men While the term ‘andropause’ remains controversial, it continues to be a well recognised term to describe a gradual decline in testosterone from the mid-thirties in males with accompanying symptoms. Not all men experience symptoms with the decline in testosterone and can experience the same symptoms due to health, medications or lifestyle factors so it remains difficult to diagnose. Symptoms can include difficulty with sexual function, decreased libido, increased fatigue, irritability, and depression, issues with memory, sleep and hot flushes. Other manifestations include loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, anaemia, and decreased bone density leading to osteoporosis. Due to the changes in body composition, lower levels of testosterone are associated with an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, both of which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, supplementing with testosterone as a therapy has not been associated with improved outcomes. The best thing a man can do to minimise the effects of andropause is to maintain a healthy weight with a quality diet and active lifestyle that supports his mental wellbeing also. As a Family Hormones can support our bodies to create and maintain highly satisfying relationships. Shifts in hormones and the impact they have on our mood and self-image can test our immediate relationships. When multiple family members are experiencing hormonal shifts interchangeably or simultaneously, the effects can be pronounced. If you feel your hormones are affecting your health or relationships, seek the advice of your trusted health care provider.

Since we get most of our Vitamin D from spending time in the sun, deficiencies are very common nowadays due to our predominantly indoor lifestyles. Vitamin D is a prohormone, meaning that the body absorbs it and converts it into a hormone. It is a hormone the kidneys produce, and affects many different body processes.

Expert Advice
THE PAKMAG EXPERTS ALAN REN Cairns Cars Home of Audi and Haval Dear Alan, what modern safety features should I look for when buying a car? In today’s society, new cars are considerably safer due to their modernised safety features. Key safety features which you should be on the hunt for include airbags, a rear-view camera, blind-spot warning, auto-braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and pre-collision technology, just to name a few. The power of the car on overtake and its stability around corners and wet surfaces should also be considered. Therefore, it’s critical to test drive the vehicle first before committing to a purchase. Our team would love to assist, and we also offer overnight test drives. 4046 6333 www.cairnsauto.com.au
DR RICHARD THOMAS Cairns Vet Clinic Dear Dr Richard Thomas, why should we enrol our puppy into puppy preschool? Enrolling your puppy into puppy preschool is a great way to get your pup on the right track with their obedience. It’s important that your puppy is happy and a well-adjusted member of the family and these classes provide basic obedience and essential early socialisation with other dogs. Puppies develop very quickly between eight and eighteen weeks of age. Our puppy preschool is designed to take advantage of this important learning period in a supervised environment. NARDINE COLLIER
Sunbird Orthodontics
Collier Lawyers
Dear Dr Bobby, I’ve been told I should take my eight-year-old to the orthodontist, but I can’t see a reason why, because she’s obviously too young for braces.
Dear Nardine, why do I need a lawyer?
You should definitely listen! A kid’s mouth is like a swan – calm on the surface, but chaos underneath. There is so much activity during the six to eight year transition from the baby teeth to the adult teeth. Unless you know what to look for, you will be blissfully unaware that problems may be developing.
Would you build your own house or remove your own tooth. Probably not. Why? Because some things just need to be left to experts. There is so much at stake in family law. It is very easy to get things wrong if you don’t know what you are doing, which can be a disaster.
A Specialist Orthodontist is trained to detect problems early, and we can often take small steps to prevent big problems when your child becomes a teenager.
Let’s face it – how would a ‘layperson’ (a name we lawyers give to non-lawyers - like a muggle) know what to do in court? If you can’t afford a lawyer, at the very least get some advice about what orders to ask for and get them to look over your paperwork.

HEALTH 5 Facts facts about EPILEPSY Epilepsy is the most common chronic brain disorder. It can occur in any age and affects more than 65 million people worldwide.
BRAINY About Brainy ABOUT Brain BRAIN Health HEALTH Looking after your brain is important at all ages, but becomes particularly important between the ages of 40 and 65 to help lower your risk of developing dementia. Looking after your brain can even help lower your risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Healthy heart, healthy brain – What is good for the heart is good for the brain. Have regular health checks to ensure your heart is in good condition, and if you’re a smoker, take steps to quit. Physical activity – Taking part in regular physical activity will increase blood flow to the brain. Build up to at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on most days. Challenge your brain – Keep your brain active, too. Take up a new sport, learn a new language or have a go at a new hobby – as long as it’s new, complex, and done often, your brain will thank you for it. Brain food – In order to function properly, the brain requires adequate nutrition. Fruits, veggies, fish and lean cuts of meat can help boost your brain. Have a chat – The brain loves social activity. Join a club, volunteer in the community or spend more time with friends and family. These activities are all good for our brain health.

Do you want to bring harmony, clarity, focus, calm, love, energy and peace into your home? Mario’s Essential Oils Range are locally made oils and blends, born from combining the best minds in the natural and traditional health field in Cairns. This quality range of essential oils, when blended into specific combinations, can achieve a range of mood and mind outcomes for your home. Mario’s is available for sale exclusively at Calanna Wholehealth stores and is part of a complete suite of natural health products.
Seizures can vary greatly in frequency, from one per year to several per day. With treatment, 60-70 per cent of people with epilepsy can be seizure free. After two to five years of successful treatment with no seizures, medications can be withdrawn without relapse.

HEALTH Nuts NUTS for FOR Almonds ALMONDS Almonds are the world’s most popular tree nuts and are enjoyed in various different ways. They’re highly nutritious for many different reasons, so if you don’t already include almonds in your diet, here are some reasons why you should. Massive amounts of nutrients – Almonds contain fibre, protein, magnesium, and Vitamin E, to name a few. Just a small handful of almonds can give you a great boost.
Natural Remedies NATURAL REMEDIES FOR SUNBURN for Sunburn is the result of too much exposure to the sun. Since our UV levels are so high in Queensland, it’s essential we take steps to protect ourselves from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Loaded with antioxidants – Almonds are a great source of antioxidants which may help protect against inflammation and diseases like cancer. May assist with blood sugar control – Nuts are naturally low in carbs but high in healthy fats, protein and fibre, making them an ideal choice for people with diabetes. May help lower cholesterol levels – Eating just one handful of almonds per day can assist in reducing the “bad” LDL cholesterol, therefore reducing the risk of heart disease. Almonds are certainly well worth incorporating into your diet. You can include them in muffins, smoothies, on top of yoghurt, through salads or use as a spread in the form of almond butter. Why not try a few less-heard of recipes, such as almondcrusted chicken, almond-chocolate chip cookies or cauliflower and almond soup?
However, sometimes we forget to reapply sunscreen or we spend a little too much time under the sun, and we end up with sunburn. Thankfully, there’s some natural ways to ease the pain. Aloe vera – Getting it straight from the plant is best (just make sure you wash it first), and it’s also known to be very cooling. Apply the gel every few hours to the affected area. White vinegar – Although the smell isn’t too pleasant, vinegar can help alleviate some of the pain and inflammation from the burn, and may even help prevent it from getting infected. Make a mixture of half vinegar and half water and apply to the affected area. Essential oils – Oils like lavender and tea tree may help soothe the pain of a sunburn and speed up recovery. Dilute a few drops into a spray bottle filled with water and spray it onto the skin.

Five great nature play ideas STORY First Five Years November is a great time to head outdoors with small children, making the most of nature play. Children are naturally curious, and there is so much out there in the world for them to discover through play. Nicole Sadlier, Regional Coordinator of Early Years at Bluearth Foundation, says the natural environment offers physical challenges, cognitive challenges and the opportunity to navigate risk. Try some of Nicole's favourites with your children and remember, the goal here is to keep things simple, cheap and don’t overthink it. Take a Slow Stroll One of the easiest ways to engage children in nature play is through a simple stroll around your neighbourhood. This doesn't have to be fast; in fact, it's better if it is slow – very slow. Nicole points out that most of the time, we are really busy getting ourselves – and the children – from A to B, which often means that we miss out on simply checking in with the natural world around us. "Parents are surprised by what they learn. They tell me that previously they would never have stopped to look at all the different coloured leaves on the ground, or enjoyed spending 15 minutes looking at all the bugs on one tree with a magnifying glass near their local playground," Nicole explains. Start a Collection of Natural Items
returning them to nature to make room for your next collection," she says. Create a Dry Creek Bed If you have room in your backyard you might like to turn a corner of the yard into a dry creek bed. Many of today's playgrounds are very flat and are made of a rubber soft fall material. A dry creek bed changes all that; it allows children to build up skills walking on an uneven surface, and controlling their balance in a way that will help them be more confident on their feet. They will crawl along it, push their toy trucks across its bumpy path and get creative with the stones. Grow Something Most young children love the opportunity to garden, and with this project, it’s easy to start small. “Keep things simple if you are new to growing and start with a couple of large pots or some herbs you will be able to use in your cooking," says Nicole. Kids will love tasting all the different flavours or smelling what you grow. Plus, when it comes to dinnertime they will be keen to watch or help you harvest your crop. Ditch Your Shoes
Even before young children understand the idea of pockets, they are natural collectors. There is nothing more fun for a young child than finding a special rock, stick, leaf or feather and taking it home.
Most adults will remember a childhood where shoes were freely abandoned. Give your own children the same joy; going barefoot not only enhances the outdoor experience, but it provides a number of other sensory benefits for children (and adults!).
“You might like to make them into an artwork before

TODDLER TANTRUMS Parents all around the world are all-too familiar with the ‘terrible two’s’, but ask any parent and they’ll tell you it carries on into the treacherous threes, frightening fours and so on. Tantrums come in all shapes and sizes and can involve explosions of anger, frustration and disorganised behaviour accompanied by crying, screaming, kicking, falling down or running away. This is because children’s social and emotional skills are starting to develop around this age, and they’re
often not yet equipped with the words to express what they’re feeling, resulting in a tantrum. Tantrums are very common and difficult to prevent, but there are a few things that can make them more likely to happen: Temperament – A child’s temperament may influence how quickly and how strongly they react to certain situations. Children who get upset easily may have more tantrums. Overstimulation, stress, hunger, and tiredness – These factors can make it more difficult for a child to manage or express their feelings. Strong emotions – Fear, shame, worry and anger can be overwhelming for their children if they don’t yet know how to express it.
HELPFUL TIP If your baby obsesses over pulling tissues out of boxes, stuff an empty baby wipe box with various pieces of brightly coloured material. They can pull them out to their hearts’ content, and it’ll keep them entertained for a little while. When done, they can be stuffed right back in for the next time. This also makes simple distraction during nappy changing time, and it’s a great use for any scrap fabric you may have around the house.
To make tantrums less likely to happen, try to reduce stress, tune in to your child’s feelings, identify the triggers and talk about emotions with your child. However, sometimes no matter what you do, tantrums still happen – and that’s okay. It's a normal part of development and it doesn’t make you a bad parent, or make your child a bad child.
DID YOU KNOW? ‘Pregnancy Glow’ is a very real thing! A pregnant woman’s hormones can give the skin a rosy appearance, make the hair thicker and shinier and make the nails longer and stronger. Enjoy it while you can, though; these differences subside once baby arrives.

Confidence for the year ahead Committed study of the Kumon Maths and English programmes has helped student Kylinda Zhang to, in her own words, “become a better version of myself.”
are free to race ahead in their studies. Those who may need more practice are given the time they need to revise.
The Year 6 student studies Kumon Maths at the Year 11 level. Kylinda has also completed the Kumon English programme; this means she has the literacy skills of a Year 12 student.
Kylinda has studied with Kumon since 2014, starting when she was in Year 1. She says Kumon study will help her as she moves into high school next year.
“Being strong in maths and English in school has helped my confidence a lot”, Kylinda says. “It’s helped me to improve in other subjects in school, such as geography and history, because they involve English and maths as well.” Kumon Maths develops calculation skills for the study of high school mathematics. Topics covered in the Kumon Maths worksheets include number recognition, counting and writing, the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, algebra, equations, functions and calculus. Kumon English develops a high level of reading comprehension ability. To support students to read widely, the Kumon English worksheets contain more extracts from published texts than any other reading programme in the world. Both Kumon Maths and English allow students to study at their own pace. Advanced students like Kylinda
“What I’ve learnt in Kumon has helped me to become more confident in taking on challenges”, she says. “I don’t feel as stressed.” Kylinda wants to become a doctor when she grows up. After seeing how Kumon helped Kylinda, her sister Selina also enrolled with Kumon in March this year. Selina is already studying one year above her school level in Kumon Maths and English. Kumon Education Centres in Cairns are open and enrolling throughout the summer holidays. As Kumon only requires around 15 to 30 minutes of daily study, the long summer holidays are the perfect opportunity for children to prepare for the year ahead. “I think Kumon is a big help. The worksheets are very detailed, step-by-step, so a student can self-study”, says Lisa Zhang, Kylinda’s mum. Please contact our Kumon Education Centres in Cairns North and Raintrees to learn more, or enrol into Kumon Maths and/or English during the summer holidays.

“I was born and bred in Gordonvale. When I was a student, I was pretty quiet and didn’t speak too much, but I really enjoyed school. I always wanted to work with children. I love working in the education industry and I love the lightbulb moments when students finally understand something.
“As a student, I did all the arts subjects. I was quiet but driven and had my eye on the prize; to study a Creative Arts degree. I became a teacher because I thought it would be a job where I could be creative every day, work positively with students and instil them with performing skills and confidence.
I currently teach grade 3, but I have been teaching for seven years. Some of my favourite memories are from the book week parades when we get to dress up. Since we’re going into reporting time now, a song that represents my life at the moment is Under Pressure by Queen.”
As for funny memories, there are too many to name just one. When you work in an intimate environment like the Drama and Dance classroom, you are able to build a strong rapport with the students, so there are lost of funny moments and one liners said in the moment of spontaneity.”

“After working as a Teacher’s Aide in Learning Support for seven years I went on to become a Youth Support Coordinator and worked across four different schools. I decided that I could make more of an impact as a teacher so I completed my GDTL at the grand old age of 45. I have always loved working with youth so it was just a natural progression. My favourite subjects to teach are Humanities and Study of Religion.
“I get great enjoyment and am passionate about equipping students to reach their full potential and become all that they can be. Educating, guiding, nurturing and journeying alongside the next generation I find is very fulfilling. My funniest memory was when I was teaching Grade 3 and a student’s tooth fell out. I told him to go wash his mouth out with water, and he returned with the front of his shirt totally drenched. I asked him if he washed his mouth or took a shower, and later that day, his mum said the same thing happens when he ‘brushes his teeth’ at night.” info@freshwatercc.qld.edu.au www.freshwatercc.qld.edu.au

“I never thought that I would be a teacher, but when I was provided with the opportunity to study at Notre Dame, it was just too wonderful an opportunity to pass up. This is where my journey started to become a passionate teacher, especially in the early childhood area. I have been teaching since 2012, all around Australia in different year levels.
“During my first degree, I developed a passion to teach children. I know what it’s like to be in the ‘learning pit’ and struggle, while also knowing what it’s like to have supportive mentors and teachers. My current theme song in life is Castles by Freya Ridings. Whatever comes my way, I’m going to build castles out of it!
I like teaching English to the younger years. It is so amazing to see their growth over the years. It is the little light bulbs that go on in their little heads when they start reading or writing. It’s pretty special.”
I’ve been teaching for almost a year, and I think my favourite subject to teach at the moment is Maths. I love it, and my students love it too. I think the funniest memories so far is the amount of times the students call me Mum.”

St Teresa’s School, Ravenshoe “When I was younger, I was a very quiet and shy student going to school. I became a teacher to make a difference in the lives of as many children as I can. I love working with children and I enjoy looking back on their growth over the year. I’ve now been teaching for four years and I love teaching science; you can have so much fun!
St Joseph’s School, Parramatta Park “I became a teacher because I was inspired by a drama teacher at school who had a very positive impact on my life. I hoped I could do the same for others, and I’ve now been teaching for 10 years.
It makes me laugh when the children call you mum, and then you see the shock on their face when they have realised what they just said.”
One of my funniest memories was at the end of my first year of teaching. I surveyed my class to get some feedback, and asked them “What do you think Miss Ryan’s least favourite subject to teach is?” and one student’s reply was “Maths is her least favourite subject because she is not very good at it.”

STEM
THE BEST TECH YOU CAN BUY FOR SCHOOL Over the last few decades, technology has completely transformed the way children learn. Whiteboards are being replaced with electronic touch-screen boards and workbooks are being replaced with laptops. More schools than ever are introducing a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, allowing students to bring a device from home to help them with their studies. In the long run, using a device for learning is more cost-effective than textbooks, they are easy to use and help your child improve their technology skills. There are a number of different devices out there, all with their own benefits and price tags. No matter the learning journey your child is on, you’re bound to find a device that is perfect for them and will accompany them through the years. While students have generally embraced these technological changes with open arms, it can be difficult for parents to navigate what type of device their children need. Laptops Laptops offer a wide range of benefits for learning. Simply open it up for class, and close it back up again when class is over. Laptops usually don’t have a touch screen, but do have a built-in keyboard and trackpad, although an external mouse will help make learning easier.
Tablets Tablets are easy to use and lightweight. They have a touch screen, making it very easy to navigate its handy features. Many also have a camera, making it easy for students to document their learnings during field trips or outdoor learning. Tablets also make drawing, composing music or making films easier than ever. To make taking notes extra handy, an external keyboard can be connected. 2-in-1 Laptops If you put a laptop and a tablet together, you get a 2-in-1 laptop. These devices offer the look and feel of a laptop with the versatility of a tablet. They have a touch screen, PC operating system, keyboard and other handy features. Screens often fold back 180 degrees and some even detach. They are also called convertible laptops or hybrids. There are some benefits that all three of the above devices carry, such as fostering online collaboration, making learning more interesting and promoting better organisation skills. They also offer more efficient note taking and with an internet connection, an extremely broad world of learning. It’s the way the world is heading, and kids are more prepared than ever for it. The learning doesn’t have to stop outside of school. There are plenty of apps available that are not only fun, but educational as well.

What Happens if my Child Needs an NDIS Plan? If your child has been diagnosed with a disability or if they have delays that are impacting their ability to participate in home and community life, then they may be eligible for funding from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). What happens first? Your child first needs to meet the requirements to access the NDIS. This process can take some time as we help you gather evidence to support their application. This evidence can include an official diagnosis from your child’s paediatrician, assessments from allied health professionals (such as speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists), letters from school or day care educators and even observations completed by members of our Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) team. We will help you collate this evidence to ensure that your child’s application is as strong as possible, and support you to contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to register the application. What happens when my child’s application is approved? When your child has met the requirements to access the NDIS, one of our ECEI team members will give you a call to arrange an appointment. These appointments normally take about two hours and in this time, we would like to meet your child.
We have some processes that we follow during these appointments, but most of the time is for you to share your observations and concerns. Afterwards, we may call or email you to clarify some information, and we may ask for your permission to observe your child at day care. We try to establish a clear picture of your child to ensure that we can make accurate recommendations for them. Waiting… The next part for you and your family is to wait while your ECEI Coordinator writes a detailed report to support funding recommendations for your child. Every child’s plan is unique and individually tailored to their needs and circumstances. The finished plan is then sent to the NDIA for approval. What happens when the plan is approved? When your child’s plan has been approved, your ECEI Coordinator will contact you to arrange another face-toface meeting or a phone call. You will be taken through the plan in detail and shown how to access the NDIS portal. We will answer any questions you have, and will continue to support you throughout the period of your child’s plan. No question is too silly, no concern is too great. We are here to support you. Contact your local ECEI team on 1800 860 555, or email us on ECEICAIRNS@ndis.gov.au

All Things Tweens and Teens
ALL THINGS TWEENS AND TEENS HEALTHY Minds Healthy MINDS Maintaining our mental health is just as important as our physical health. When your child reaches adolescence, the whirlwind of hormones, exam or work stress and decisions about their future can provoke some difficult emotions for them. The most effective ways to deal with the stresses of adolescence lay with looking after your body and mind. Encourage your teen to get active, take time out every day to relax, plan fun activities for themselves, eat healthy foods and try relaxation techniques. As a parent, show love and care for your child, show that you’re interested in what’s happening in their life and encourage them to share their concerns with you. If all else fails and the problem persists or your child is experiencing darker thoughts, get in touch with your GP who can refer your child to a mental health centre such as Headspace. If the situation is urgent, call 000 or go straight to your local emergency department.
DEALING Dealing WITH With BODY Odour ODOUR Body Body odour is a normal part of life, especially when your teen is a raging ball of hormones. However, when it first starts happening, it can be quite embarrassing for them. Thankfully, there are loads of helpful ways to keep body odour under control.
Body odour mainly manifests in the armpits, groin, hands and feet. Taking a bath or shower every day, thoroughly washing the ‘hotspots’ and using deodorant usually does the trick at keeping the odour at bay. You can even pop a travel-sized deodorant in their school bag so they always have one on hand. If it’s really bothering your child, a pharmacist may recommend an extrastrength antiperspirant. But at the end of the day, remind them it’s all normal.
Victorinox VICTORINOX SWISS Army Swiss ARMY Knife KNIFE Swiss Army Knives are useful in many areas of life. Victorinox has recently launched the eighth limited edition of its iconic classic pocket knife. A colourful celebration of food of the world, the ten available designs were created by fans of the brand all over the globe. If you have an outdoorsy tween or teen, a Swiss Army Knife is a great addition to their expeditions (given they are old and mature enough to safely handle one). This particular handy tool contains tweezers, a nail file, small blade, key ring, toothpick, scissors and 2.5mm flathead screwdriver, and features a beautiful design. All Things Tweens and Teens
FUTURE PROOF YOUR TEEN for CAREER SUCCESS STORY Kathy Donaldson, The Parent’s Precinct As a committed and loving parent, you want the best for your child. Schools do what they can in the time they have available for career lessons and career counselling, however, studies have shown that teenagers have indicated they get most help from their parents. Helping teenagers to find a career that best suits their skills, abilities and interests can be daunting. Many parents are keen to help but are unsure about what they can do, and more importantly, they frequently base information or advice on their own experience of career transition. Jobs of the future are constantly changing, and chances are that your child will be doing a job that hasn't even been invented yet. So, how can you help prepare your teenager for the future? Have conversations about their likes and interests Listen carefully and ask questions about their ideas and expectations. Let them develop their own thoughts and aspirations and allow them to discover more about occupations that may interest them. Be aware of your reactions To assist your child in exploring possible career options, be sure you don’t jump in and make judgements and decisions for them. Allow them to discuss their ideas and interests freely as this will increase their self-awareness. Encourage your child to explore their options Sit with your teen as they are investigating jobs and careers through websites. Prepare them to find their own work experience. This can provide your child with opportunities for decision-making and problem-solving while increasing confidence and taking responsibility for creating their own future. Allow them to take up new challenges which will give them a sense of achievement and independence.
64 November 2019 | www.pakmag.com.au
Show interest in your child’s aspirations Allow them to freely express their interests in particular jobs. Discuss their strengths and interests with them and how these may lead to a worthwhile career. Plans and pathways There are so many pathways available to teenagers through schools and private providers. Keep close contact with your school to become familiar with suitable options and opportunities. Discuss your own work experiences Be careful not to elaborate too much on the negatives and focus on the learning experiences of your job, whatever it may be. Explain that all jobs play key roles in the effective development of our community. Be a good role model Your children are influenced by your thoughts, values and behaviours. Be aware of how you communicate with other family members, friends and neighbours. Are you displaying the attributes of the person that you would like them to be? Keep up-to-date with information and resources By attending school information nights, visiting career expos, understanding the local job market and by using internet resources, you will have a good knowledge of the current trends and be able to guide your child confidently. Seek advice Schools have careers advisors and vocational support co-ordinators who can assist you and your child in making informed decisions and help them establish pathways that will provide the foundations for a successful future.
Celebrate
RACE DAY PARTY! Spring is finally in the air. It's time to dress up, get together with friends and head to the races. Whether you’re planning on going down to the track for a local race or are hosting a Melbourne Cup Luncheon for your circle of friends, we’ve got you sorted for a great day. Fashions on the Field The weather is heating up, so it’s time to ditch those jumpers and long pants and bring back the flowy dresses and sleeveless tops. Dress pretty in pink, pair it with stylish heels and a floral touch and you’ve got a trendy outfit that welcomes spring with open arms. Don’t forget the little ones! There are plenty of gorgeous outfits out there that are not only stylish, but perfectly suitable for play. Choose outfits that are easy to move around in and made of thin, breathable fabric.
Prancing Ponies Placing flowers around the table with elegant equine figurines will give your lunch area a refreshing “spring racing” feel. On the walls, hang up homemade ribbons spelling out a word of your choice (you can get the kids involved with this step). If all else fails, sticking to a theme of bright colours and blooming flora is sure to achieve the look you are going for. Seasonal Snacks Platters are never a bad idea – they look great, taste great, and work fantastically for picky eaters. Arrange nuts, crackers, seasonal fruit, cheese, sliced meat and dips on a platter and allow your party goers to graze on the nibbles throughout the party. Offer your guests a variety of foods served in small amounts. Think sliders, deviled eggs, mini quiches and spring rolls with dipping sauce. The finger food is sure to be a big hit with the adults as well as the children. You can even impress your guests with homemade cocktails (and mocktails) served with fresh fruit and mint leaves.

Chicken Souvlaki
KEFIR ICE CREAM
RECIPE Lenard's Chicken
RECIPE Beth Watson, Mungalli Creek Dairy
This super easy chicken souvlaki is loaded with classic Greek flavours.
Perfect for hot summer days.
Ingredients 3 Lenard’s chicken thighs, diced 1 cup iceberg lettuce, chopped 2 red onions, chopped 2 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 lime 1 tsp ground cumin tsp black pepper
½ tsp cayenne pepper 1 tbsp coriander 4 flatbread wraps 4 tbsp Greek yogurt Olive oil Salt and pepper
Method Toss the chicken thighs in a mixing bowl with garlic, a pinch of salt, black pepper, cumin, cayenne and olive oil. Cover the chicken and let it marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Heat a little oil in a pan. Cook the chicken until cooked through and golden in colour. Lightly warm the flatbreads in the oven or by using a sandwich press. Lay chicken, lettuce, tomato and onion in the centre of the bread. Squeeze lime juice over the chicken, drizzle with Greek yoghurt and garnish with coriander. Wrap together, serve immediately and enjoy. Ingredients 1 Mungalli Creek Bio Egg ¾ cup Mungalli Creek Cream 1 ¼ cups Mungalli Creek Kefir ¼ cup honey 1 tsp vanilla extract Handful of organic blackberries or mix-in of your choice Method Mix the egg with the cream and cook in a small saucepan over low medium heat, stirring constantly until you have a somewhat thick custard. Do not let the mixture boil. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Mix in the Kefir, vanilla extract and honey to taste. Freeze in your ice cream maker, according to the directions for your particular machine. Add your mix-ins just before the ice cream is ready: we chose organic blackberries. When finished, transfer to another container and place it in the freezer for a couple of hours to harden it a bit more, giving it the consistency of ice cream. Serve and enjoy. Beth's Tip: Some great mix-ins are choc chips, fruit, nuts and caramel. Mungalli Creek Dairy www.mungallicreekdairy.com.au

We’ve gathered some awesome tips to keep your family a little more organised and hopefully minimise the possibility of important items getting lost. Drop Zone - A drop zone is not a place for parachutists to land, but it does live up to its name; it is a designated space located by the entry of the house. It’s a great spot to “drop” backpacks, shoes and umbrellas upon arriving home – and picking them up again when it’s time to head out. It’s also a great place to file incoming mail, hang the dog’s leash or keep hats for sun-safe playtime. Designate an area and hang up some hooks and some
handy storage containers to keep everything where it needs to be. Command Centre - Hand-in-hand with drop zones go command centres. This is an area in the home where families can go for quick information, such as dinner plans, medical appointments and extracurricular activities. It’s an easy way for everyone to know what’s happening and when. A white or blackboard, calendar and chore chart work great in this area.
“
Freedom's Tip: Despite the name, a drop zone doesn’t need to be messy. Investing in some storage units such as baskets, fabric drawers and magazine holders can help keep the area tidy. A simple clock mounted on the wall will help everyone be on time.
