FATHERLY LOVE “Anyone can be a father but it takes a special man to be a daddy.”

Breck Nielson Dad to: Soren and Jonas

As a single dad to two rambunctious boys, our cover dad Breck certainly has his hands full. However, through the happy smiles there is a sadness that often overwhelms the father. Two years ago Breck and the boys lost Clare, Breck’s wife and Jonas and Soren’s mum. Jonas was nine months old at the time and Soren just over two years old. Clare died due to an infection whilst she was undergoing treatment for leukaemia and the tragic loss shook the family and the community. Clare was an active member of many organisations in Cairns, co-founded the Cairns Autism Spectrum Group and, as Breck tells us, she lived and loved life to its fullest. As we can all imagine, the past two years has been intensely painful for Breck. “How to explain the experience of losing her is near on impossible,” Breck tells PakMag. “Time stood painfully still, and over the last two years have been slowly getting back to some type of “new normal”.”

brother because he doesn’t remember much. You can’t prepare for these things and they just come from nowhere. I call them land minds.” Soren and Jonas, Breck tells us, are resilient. They are “programmed to love life just like their mummy did. I want my children to grow up with the same sense of adventure and majestic inquisitiveness that she had. It's big shoes to fill and I know I won’t be able to do it to the same standard as her. That’s just an impossibility. But I can do it the best I can. And that’s my life goal.”

And while Breck admits that the big things, like anniversaries and birthdays are painful, but Breck, who is a school teacher and drummer, credits expected, it’s the little things that hurt the most. his family and friends as well as The Leukaemia In a circle – Father’s Day – Sunday, September 4thand the Cairns Base Hospital Oncology Foundation “It’s seeing Cadbury’s Cream Eggs for sale, department for helping him, Clare and the boys on having the knowledge that they were her favourites this incredibly difficult journey. and you were the only one that knew, the really innocent statements from your three-year-old Life, even without Clare, continues for Breck and like, “Can we go on an airplane to see mummy?” his boys. or worse, the lack of questions from his younger “They wake up each day and give me the energy to get up and live life,” Breck tells us. Through the sadness, the crippling grief and the pain comes a lesson for Breck and for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. “Everyone says that people you love are the only thing that really matters. I always follow telling people that with… “No. You don’t understand. It’s the ONLY thing that matters!”

We want to thank Breck for sharing his story with PakMag and for reminding us about what matters – you’re doing an amazing job with your boys, Breck. Clare would be proud.

SUCCESS STORY Jenna Gallina

There’s so much more to sleepovers than pillow fights, glow sticks and scary movies. So join the fun with these adorable overnight ideas and tips for slumber party success.

The Sleepover Basics. Hosting a sleepover, especially your child’s first one, can be a lot of fun for both you and your child, especially the planning process. So here are our top tips to help you prepare for the big night:

1. First time? Consider a half sleepover. Staying overnight for the first time (or having guests over) can be a little overwhelming for kids. It may sound fun in theory but when it’s time for bed, many kids will start feeling anxious and homesick. Consider hosting a ‘half’ sleepover where the kids can pack pyjamas, play games, make dinner, watch movies and then head home around 9pm.

2. Invitation etiquette Aim for an even number of children. Three’s a crowd. As is five, seven and nine. Aim to have an even number of guests for any games that are played.

3. Have a code word. Letting the kids play independently is important but it’s also imperative that you provide adequate supervision without looking like an overprotective parent. A good idea is to have a code word that your child can use if things get out of hand (guests are fighting, someone is hurt) and she needs you to micro-manage the situation.

10

SEPTEMBER 2016 www.pakmag.com.au

4. Prepare for problems. Because someone always forgets a toothbrush or feels homesick. Below are a few of the most common situations that may arise. Sleepless kiddies – It’s 4.00am and you can still hear the giggles coming from the living room. It’s up to you how you handle it. Do you reprimand them in your meanest “go to sleep” voice or simply wait it out? Homesickness – No matter how welcoming the environment is, sometimes homesickness hits. Be prepared to make a late night call to a parent – it happens to the best of us. Accidents at night – Have extra clothing and an extra sleeping bag just in case. And make sure you are discreet when helping the child. Fights between guests – Children clash and sometimes it will be on your turf. Separate the kids to talk to them one on one, suggest a new activity and help them to move on from the incident. Forgotten items – Have extra pyjamas, swimmers, towels and toothbrushes on hand, just in case.

Keeping your guests entertained isn’t always a problem

Homemade pizzas are always a success as kids can choose the toppings. Tacos are another good one as each child can pick and choose what to include in their taco.

as many children can entertain themselves for hours on end. However, it is good to have a few crafts or games

set up just in case the guests cannot agree or are bored.

Indoor and outdoor activities. If the weather cooperates, a game of tug-o-war or hide ‘n

seek before dinner can help the kids work up an appetite and burn off some energy. During the hotter months you may even get away with setting up a sprinkler or slip ‘n’ slide for an hour of water play.

For dessert, you may want to set up a cupcake decorating or sundae making station or set up a snack bar where everyone can choose different treats such as nuts, popcorn, frozen yogurt and jelly. Limit extra sugary sweets before bed unless you want the kids running around the neighbourhood bare foot and crazy at midnight.

BULLYING

AND OTHER CLASSROOM CONCERNS

STORY Gary Hall, Catholic Education

Children spend an average of six hours a day, five days a week in the classroom with the same peers. It is only natural that sometimes tension is going to build and children are going to clash. However, what can we do when challenging classroom behaviour becomes the norm? And what are some of the classroom concerns all parents need to be aware of?

BULLYING

Bullying is one particular form of aggressive behaviour. It can be covert or overt in nature. Most widely accepted definitions of bullying are based on four characteristics: bullying is deliberate, harmful, involves a power imbalance, and has an element of repetition. Some kids that are considered bullies are well-connected to their peers, have social power and like to dominate or be in charge of others. Others are more isolated from their peers and may be depressed or anxious, have low self-esteem, be less involved in school, be easily pressured by peers, or not identify with the emotions or feelings of others. Remember, those who bully others do not need to be stronger or bigger than those they bully. The power imbalance can come from a number of sources including popularity, strength or cognitive ability. For parents who are concerned that their child is being bullied, here are a few signs to look out for: • Unexplainable injuries • Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewellery • Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness • Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. Kids may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch. • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares • Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations • Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem • Self-destructive behaviours such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide

For parents who are concerned that their child could be bullying others, here are a few signs to watch for: • Physical or verbal fights and aggressive behaviour • Friends with people who bully others • Get sent to the principal’s office or to detention frequently • Have unexplained extra money or new belongings • Blame others for their problems and refuse to accept responsibility for their actions • Competitive nature and worry about their reputation or popularity How to Help at Home Many children choose not to tell their parents if they are struggling. This can be hard for us parents but it’s important to understand that it’s not your fault that your child isn’t asking for help. Your child may feel helpless or embarrassed. He may want to handle it himself to feel in control or he may be concerned about being seen as a dobber or worried about the backlash. So what can you do to help your child open up and talk to you? First and foremost – listen. Family Lives, Sandra Hiller explains, “Listen without getting angry or upset. Put your own feelings aside, sit down and actually listen to what your child is telling you.” Let your child feel in control. Rather than just taking over, ask your child what he would like to see you do. Reassure your child it’s not their fault. There’s still a stigma attached to bullying and some children feel they’ve brought it upon themselves. It might be a good idea to tell them stories about your own problems in the classroom or to talk about some of the celebrities who have spoken out about being bullied in the past.

www.pakmag.com.au SEPTEMBER 2016

13

pakmag EDUCATION

But what about if your child is doing the bullying? What can you do to stop this behaviour? All parents need to take it seriously. Don't treat bullying as a passing phase. Even if you're not worried about long-lasting effects on your child, another child is being hurt. Talk to your child to find out why he or she is bullying. Often, children bully when they feel sad, angry, lonely, or insecure and many times major changes at home or school may bring on these feelings. Ask a teacher or a school counsellor if your child is facing any problems at school, such as if your child is struggling with a particular subject or has difficulty making friends. Ask them for advice on how you and your child can work through the problem.

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR

Disruptive behaviour is when a child is uncooperative and prevents themselves and other children in class from working. While acting out and losing focus isn’t necessarily a cause for concern, it might suggest a behavioural disorder if this behaviour becomes the norm. The symptoms of disruptive behaviour disorders will vary based on the age of the child and the type of behavioural disorder that he or she has. Children’s temperament, social skills, and coping mechanisms will also affect the severity of the symptoms. The following are some common examples of symptoms that people with DBD may exhibit: • Behavioural symptoms - Social isolation, bullying, revenge-seeking behaviours, defiance, lying, stealing and blaming others, wilful destruction of property, being cruel to animals and playing with fire • Cognitive symptoms – Difficulty with concentration, memory and problem-solving • Psychosocial symptoms – Lack of empathy and remorse, false sense of grandiosity, persistent negativity, chronic annoyance and irritability and low self-esteem. If you are concerned about your child’s behaviour, it’s important to request an assessment with the school or through a counsellor. There are various forms of therapy that can help your child overcome these concerns.

UNCONTROLLED ANGER

Another problem in the classroom and at home is uncontrolled anger. While anger is a normal emotion, it is important to keep your feelings in check to prevent a situation from escalating. This is easier said than done, especially with children who are still learning to understand their emotions. Here’s how your actions can help your child come to terms with this complex feeling: • Admit it – It’s easier to deal with these feelings when you identify them. • Deal with it - Stop what you are doing, take some deep breaths, and count to 10. • Identify and understand the cause - Try to figure out the exact reason you are angry. Often people have an outburst about something when they are actually upset about something different altogether. • Walk away - This pro-active step allows you to have the power to change a situation. • Get a new perspective - Attempting to understand the other person's perspective in an argument might help you keep your temper down. • Talk it out - Explaining your feelings to those close to you might help you feel better about the situation.

It’s probably been a few (okay, more than a few) years since you were in the classroom environment but I’m sure we all can remember the ups and downs of schooling. While feeling down, getting angry, occasionally having trouble focusing or having an argument with peers are all normal, these classroom concerns can quickly escalade into a bigger issue. So, to all parents out there, be aware. Be proactive. And be there for your children, in and out of the classroom.

ARE YOU PREPARED OR PONDERING? “School? No, my baby is too young to be starting school fulltime! I want more time with her at home!” This can be the feeling that surfaces as THAT time edges closer. The maternal impulse is to hold on to your baby, when deep down you know, this is the first big step in letting go. At this time of year a conversation for many parents is the topic of Prep.Mixed emotions that go with this are evident and revolve around personal feelings as well as feelings for your child. How will she go all day at school? Will he make friends? What if…? Starting the school journey is a big milestone. But like any big step, preparation is the key and in the case of starting Prep, you and your child can get ready for this next exciting phase in their life as a team. Mrs Sarah Rowan, Head of Junior School at Peace Lutheran College explains the learning process and how parents can support their child: "Generally, when children start Prep they should be able to: • Write their own name, using a capital letter for the first letter and then the rest in lower case letters;

promote great conversations around recipes and ingredients and can help your child develop maths concepts in measuring and estimating. Having play dates and visiting friends also provide an opportunity to involve your child in skills of planning, organising, cooperating and problem solving, and even in the bath, water can be used to estimate, experiment and predict with a variety of containers. Free play, whilst fun, is also vital because it is through play that children explore and practice their ideas.

• Recognise numbers from 1 to 10, again, in random order."

Through simple everyday activities, vibrant conversations and varied opportunities for play, children are making connections to their world and increasing their knowledge and skills.

From a very young age, children learn by watching, talking and doing and this is also the case with learning words and numbers. You can support this learning by involving your child in the everyday things you do. Shopping offers opportunities for naming, counting, comparing, choosing and sharing, and preparing meals can

Mrs Rowan comments, "Every child is exceptional and each will develop differently, not necessarily in the same way or at the same rate as another. Each child’s progress should be considered a unique journey, with their efforts being encouraged and even the smallest achievements being celebrated."

• Recognise the letters of the alphabet, if possible, in random order;

"When choosing a school, factors to consider not only include academics or facilities, but at this introduction stage, the development of your child as a whole person is absolutely vital. A child who is surrounded by nurture, respected for their individual learning and made to feel important, known and valued, will build solid foundations for future success." It is this respect and individual attention that sets Peace Lutheran College apart – they are a small school with a big focus on making sure everybody is somebody special. The Peace Lutheran College Prep Program will equip your child with the right tools for a successful and enjoyable educational journey.

Living with Worry - Anxiety in Children STORY Jenna Gallina “I don’t want to go to school. My stomach hurts.” – it’s something many parents have heard before. For parents with a child struggling with anxiety, where this plea is usually accompanied by tears, tantrums or panic attacks, this simple phrase can leave you feeling concerned, confused and at a complete loss as to what to do.

Approximately two to nine per cent of children and teenagers are diagnosed with anxiety disorders in Australia and countless more suffer behind closed doors. Anxiety can be a crippling condition for your child and, as a parent, watching it unfold can leave you feeling overwhelmed, helpless and most likely guilty. In most instances there is nothing you are doing to cause their anxiety; it is something that comes from within. But there are ways you can help them and it starts by understanding and identifying the signs of this illness. In addition to excessive worrying, children with anxiety disorders often have trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating and can experience diarrhoea, stomach aches and headaches. Emotionally, anxiety can impact a child’s thought processes, and can result in a child striving for perfection, being overwhelmed by unrealistic threats and consumed with fearful thoughts, avoiding social situations (such as school) and feeling afraid, uneasy, restless and sick.

What parents need to know about children with anxiety. Its okay for your child to worry – It is our body’s natural reaction to worry when threatened. Anxiety, however, causes our brains to think a situation is threatening when it’s actually not. Anxiety is not ‘made up’ – Yes, anxiety impacts the thought process and many people assume

it’s all in the sufferer’s head, but this is not true. It is often part of a person’s internal temperament. Anxiety may be the result of another condition - Anxiety can be more common in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder and depression. See our Behavioural Busters article at www.pakmag.com.au for more information on these conditions.

Getting Control of Anxiety When a child (or anyone, for that matter) is experiencing anxiety or a phobia to an extent that it causes genuine distress and interferes with normal functioning, then it’s time to get help. There are psychological support services available across Cairns that can help with diagnosis, treatment and management. There are plenty of coping mechanisms that can help children determine realistic thoughts and fears from unrealistic ones. There are also ways to help children practice mindfulness, to prevent panic attacks and to gain more control in social situations. What approach you take will depend on your child and the assessment done by a professional. And while I can’t tell you exactly how to help your child with anxiety, I can tell you that recognising the signs and accepting help is the first step in the right direction.

Anxiety manifests in various ways and in varying severities. Separation anxiety – an intense fear of being away from family Social anxiety – an intense fear of being in social situations, such as school Phobia – an intense fear of a certain object, situation or event Social phobia – an intense fear of how others see you characterised by extreme shyness Generalised anxiety disorder – unrealistic worries about a broad range of possibilities including what might happen and what has happened in the past Post-traumatic stress disorder – a type of anxiety that develops due to a traumatic event and often results in irritability, violence, changes in sleep patterns and problems concentrating Obsessive compulsive disorder – the persistence of unwanted thoughts that results in children feeling compelled to repeat a particular action

Abacus by Wallis competitors shine in annual Abacus Skills Competition Think outside the classroom with Abacus by Wallis – a tutoring program that can foster incredible results in not only maths but across the board. PakMag was invited to come along to the Abacus Skills Competition where students aged four to 12 were treated to an afternoon of competition, face and nail painting, food and beverage and plenty of fun! And, for four of the students, the day ended on an even better note with an award for the best in each grade. Come and meet the winners of this year’s competition.

Abacus Explained Abacus is a manual device that consist of beads that can be moved up and down. It is used as a way to calculate sums quickly and aid in improvement in maths and problem solving. Abacus by Wallis, however, is so much more. After speaking with a few of the proud parents and the excited students, it is clear that this program is not just about improving maths skills. Abacus by Wallis owner, Yoriko has created a warm, welcoming and friendly environment where children learn to expand their mind, improve their concentration and boost their confidence. You can enrol anytime on a monthly basis and, with twice weekly sessions, you will notice improvement in your child right away. HEALTH

pakmag

+ HEALTH Gaining Control of Asthma Approximately one in five children and one in 10 adults in Australia suffer from asthma or asthma related symptoms. Asthma is usually caused by an allergic reaction in the lungs which leads to inflammation of the lining of the airways. This inflammation causes swelling and constriction of the airway muscles, leading to poor oxygen flow. This lack of oxygen can then lead to the sufferer wheezing and gasping for breath.

WHAT SYMPTOMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ASTHMA? The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and a persistent cough at night or after exercise. These symptoms are not exhaustive and are not always related to asthma so it is important to seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist. WHAT CAN TRIGGER ASTHMA? Some of the most common triggers for asthma include: • A cold, flu or chest infection • Pollens, grasses and mould • Exercise • Cigarette smoke or smoke in general • Some chemicals, particularly those with strong smells • Emotions such as stress • Animal hair and dander • Dust mites • Some drugs including aspirin, anti-inflammatories and some blood pressure medications

WHAT STEPS SHOULD PEOPLE TAKE IF THEY HAVE ASTHMA? It is really important to visit a doctor if you experience any of the above symptoms. If diagnosed with asthma your doctor will provide an ASTHMA ACTION PLAN. This plan will incorporate ideas for reducing symptoms by avoiding known triggers. Your doctor will most likely prescribe medication to be used on a daily or regular basis to PREVENT or REMOVE an asthma attack. There are also some nutrients that can assist in reducing the allergies and the inflammation leading to asthma. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS MAY HELP REDUCE ASTHMA SYMPTOMS? The addition of magnesium, zinc, fish oils (Omega 3 fatty acids) and fortified Vitamin C can help prevent or reduce the extent of inflammation produced in the airways. These should be taken on a daily basis to allow the body to fight the trigger factors and reduce airway sensitivity. If you have questions please don’t hesitate to ask advice at your local, friendly Calanna Pharmacy.

TIPS FOR AVOIDING TRIGGERS 1. Dust Mites – Exposure to dust and dust mites can be difficult to exclude completely as they are part of everyday life. Reduce exposure to dust mites by washing bedclothes in hot water, removing sheepskin and woollen underlays and airing pillows and quilts in direct sunlight each week. 2. Mould – Ridding your house of mould can also be tricky, especially when living in the tropics. Keep surfaces clean and free from moisture build up, seal leaks in bathrooms, kitchens and roofs and regularly check your house for mould patches. 3. Medicines – Only a small percentage of people have an allergy to anti-inflammatory medicines and blood pressure medications that may trigger an asthma attack. Usually this can only be identified after having taken one of these particular medicines (and experiencing asthma symptoms shortly after). Talk to your doctor or pharmacists for more information.

+ HEALTH Five Things You Probably Didn’t Know About… Allergies and Anaphylaxis Australia and New Zealand have among the highest prevalence of allergic disorders in the developed world with almost 20 per cent of the population allergic to something. There are several theories as to why this is the case (obesity rate, climate change, a delay of foods in childhood and a lack of exposure to illnesses and bacteria have all been suggested) but none have been confirmed. When an acute allergic reaction occurs, it is known as anaphylaxis.

DID YOU KNOW? • A study of hospital admissions from 2005 to 2013 found a 50 per cent jump in children with anaphylaxis with a 110 per cent increase in rates in older children (aged five to 14). • While the majority of food-induced anaphylaxis hospital admissions occur in children less than 5 years of age, all food-induced anaphylaxis fatalities occurred between 8 and 35 years of age. • Although food allergy is common in childhood, there's a good chance of outgrowing it, especially allergies to eggs, milk, soy and wheat. The food allergies most likely to stick around for life are allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, seeds and seafood. • According to the Australasian Society for Clinical Immunology and Allergy a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis usually occurs within 20 minutes to two hours of exposure to the trigger. • Bee string anaphylaxis is estimated to result in approximately two deaths per year in Australia. The other main cause of anaphylaxis death is drugs (48 per cent) with food-induced anaphylaxis fatalities accounting for six per cent of fatalities. ANAPHYLAXIS: LIBBY’S STORY Anaphylaxis is something which you can't predict and, for many families, it is also something that is not in the least bit concerning. After all, if your child doesn’t have allergies, then why should you worry? This is exactly what Libby thought, until she witnessed someone she loved nearly lose his life due to an anaphylactic reaction. Libby shares her story with PakMag. “Having two kids who don’t suffer from allergies I had never thought much about food allergies or anaphylaxis,” Libby tells us. “We never had to park in the hospital car park to give peanut butter for the first time as we have no family history of severe allergies.” However, often finding out someone has an allergy only occurs when the person comes into contact with the substance. And the first encounter can be a very terrifying one for both the child and the family.

26

SEPTEMBER 2016 www.pakmag.com.au

“The dangerous reaction that could happen had never crossed my mind until my nephew had an anaphylactic reaction to an insect bite. My nephew was blue and unconscious within eight minutes and that image will never be far from my mind. We didn’t know what insect had bitten him until he suffered for a second time and we were able to identify that ant bites had caused the reaction.” Libby suggests not letting it get this far. It’s important for all parents to know what to do, just in case. “Our family has now completed a paediatric first aid course to learn about severe allergic reactions and life-saving CPR skills,” Libby explains. “Because you really just never know.” SO WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW? There is a Triple A Management Plan for anaphylaxis that only takes a moment to memorise and put into place: • Avoidance – avoid whatever your child is allergic to. • Awareness – raise awareness with those around you of your child’s allergies. • Action – administer a shot from an Epi-pen and then call 000. For more information on Anaphylaxis or to learn CPR contact Little Lives Paediactric First Aid – 0428 656 970.

Self-Care New Mums STORY Dr Elizabeth Chappel (BSc MBBS FRACGP), Apple Tree Medical Smithfield

I saw a meme this morning on Facebook - “Behind every great kid is a mum who is pretty sure she is screwing it all up.” Mother’s guilt has a lot to answer for. From the second we get that positive pregnancy test the guilt and the worry starts to sink in. • “I shouldn’t have had so many drinks last week.”

you can. This may involve compromise: the house doesn’t need to be immaculate; you don’t have to watch that final episode on TV; and it’s ok to have an afternoon nap. Sleep is vital to your well-being.

• “I shouldn’t be smoking.”

2.

• “What if that Panadol I had for a headache damages my baby?”

And lots of them! Try to focus on the healthiest diet that you can. That doesn’t mean calorie restriction, but more like avoiding processed foods, junk foods, alcohol, nonprescription medication and smoking.

And so the (negative) self-talk starts. And I am not too sure when it ends. I’ve met many mums well into their 80s who are still worried about their children. One of the best things that you can do for your children is to be a positive role model - to be happy, healthy and energetic. This means being the best possible version of yourself. So how can you do this, especially when you have a newborn?

Start with some self-care 1.

Rest. (I can hear you laughing )

Ok, so maybe you are not going to achieve the conventional eight to 10 hours of sleep each night that you used to take for granted before children, but try to get as much rest when

3.

Eat vegetables.

Take time out.

Take time with your children to get outside every day. You don’t need to frantically exercise, but just keep moving. Walk bare foot on the beach or go swimming at a favourite swimming hole. Enjoy moving and enjoy nature. It’s also important to take time by yourself to have a coffee with friends, to laugh and to have fun. These three basic concepts will take you a long way towards being a fantastic role model for your children, and enable you to have the vitality to really enjoy every step of their journey into adulthood.

THREE TIPS TO HELP WITH YOUR CHILDCARE SEARCH Wanting the very best for your child is great motivation for any parent, and when it comes to choosing an early learning and care provider it can be a daunting experience if you’re unsure what to look for. To help parents and carers make this all-important decision, Goodstart Early Learning has three simple tips.

1. Start your search early Finding high quality child care is very important. Research shows that 80 per cent of a child’s brain development occurs in the first five years and children who attend early learning are one third less likely to start school behind. Starting your search early will put you in a better position to secure childcare where and when you need it – doing your research during pregnancy is a great time to start!

2. Undertake a centre tour, meet the team and ask about the learning programs

Visiting centres you are interested in will help you narrow the search and find the right provider to meet your child’s needs. Centre tours are a valuable way to meet the centre director and educators. Don’t be afraid to ask about their qualifications in early childhood development. You’ll also get a feel of the indoor and outdoor learning environments and hear first-hand how the programs can support your child’s learning, development and wellbeing.

3. If the childcare centre is in high demand, be flexible with start and days

Wherever possible, remain flexible with your start date and days of childcare if the centre is at full capacity. When a spot becomes available at a centre, remaining flexible with your days and when you commence childcare can mean you get your foot in the door. Once your child is within care, centre directors should work with you to help secure additional days or preferred days once these places became available.

Starting your search? A good place to start your search is the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) Building Blocks website. For information regarding Goodstart centres, call 1800 222 543. Their team will organise a centre tour and discuss your needs and childcare availability.

WHAT ABOUT DAD – POST NATAL DEPRESSION IN FATHERS In many households Dad is the pillar of strength. Dad kisses the boo-boos, chases the monsters from the closet and makes all the worries in the world disappear with a simple cuddle. But what happens when Dad is suffering in silence and struggling with a mental illness? Recent research confirms that postnatal depression and anxiety affects around one in 10 new dads. Although these mental illnesses are often associated with new mums, dads are affected too. “Stress, sleep deprivation, new responsibilities and changing relationships, as well as feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty all contribute to how dads cope with becoming a parent,” PANDA CEO, Ms Smith tells PakMag. Knowing that your man isn’t coping can be difficult but some signs to look for include an increased reliance on drugs and alcohol, trouble focusing at work and detachment from you and bub. “The best way to know how dad is going is to ask him,” Ms Smith explains. Make time every day to talk about your thoughts and let your partner know that you are there to listen. "Sometimes new dads don't even realise that there's something bothering them, until someone close checks in and asks.” It is also important that new dads recognise this important life transition. Becoming a dad is a massive responsibility and it’s only natural to feel a little freaked out. Give your partner time to get used to this change and to find a balance between work and home life. In some instances additional help and medical intervention is required. And this is not something to be ashamed about. The most important thing is that everyone in the family is healthy, happy and coping with the change. If you or anyone you know is struggling with perinatal anxiety or depression, call PANDA’s free National Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Helpline (1300 726 306).

pakmag CRAFT

HANDMADE GIFTS

FOR DAD Father’s Day just isn’t complete without handmade crafts from the kids. In addition to a card and a gift they make at daycare or school, you probably want to do something special with the kids just for dad. This year we’ve decided to whip up a few gifts that are not only lovingly handmade, but also incredibly handy. Both of our crafts can be done with the kids (with adult supervision of course, unless you want a kitchen covered in paprika and a lounge room covered in Sharpie Pen). And both will be enjoyed by Dad. Here are our easy guides to making the perfect marinade for Sunday afternoon’s BBQ and an adorable personalised mug for Sunday morning’s coffee.

Dried Mustard

Black Pepper

Chilli Powder

Sugar

BBQ DRY RUB SPICE MIX

Paprika

Thyme

Garlic Powder

Salt

If your man is anything like mine, then having a good seasoning on steak, pork or any other meat makes a meal. This BBQ dry rub spice is a tantalising combination of spicy flavours that will bring out the zest in all meats. And, best of all, most of the ingredients are probably already hidden away in the pantry, just begging to be used. This recipe makes enough to cover 3.5 kilograms of meat really well. Place the mixture in a jar and you can use it for more than one meal (if you’re not keen to cook up 3.5 kilograms of meat in one sitting).

WHAT YOU NEED

46

HOW TO MAKE

• 1 Teaspoon Dried Mustard

• 2 Tablespoons Paprika

• 2 Tablespoons Chilli Powder

• 1 Teaspoon Dried Thyme

• 1/2 Teaspoon Black Pepper

• 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder

• 2 Tablespoons Sugar

• 1 Tablespoon Salt

SEPTEMBER 2016 www.pakmag.com.au

Making BBQ dry rub is incredibly easy. Simply mix all the ingredients together (just make sure you break up all the clumps of sugar). Add the mixture to your favourite meat and cook. It works for meat made on the BBQ, baked in the oven and pan fried.

KIDS ART ON A MUG

Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Marker - Medium Point Sharpie Pen mugs are all the rage these days. Well here is an idea just for Dad – a mug featuring the kids’ amazing artwork. Little ones will love being able to use special Sharpie Pens and Dad will love having a reminder of just how special he is anytime he enjoys a cuppa.

WHAT YOU NEED • Plain white mugs • Oil-based Sharpie paint markers (in various colours) • Stencils for decoration • Rubbing alcohol and cotton balls • Nail polish remover • Cotton buds • Oven

How To MakE 1. Clean the mug with rubbing alcohol and cotton balls. Let dry. 2. Let the kids draw what they would like on the mug, whether it’s a funny face, a monster, a rainbow, a butterfly, a picture of the family or simply the word DAD in bubble writing. Any mistakes can be fixed with nail polish remover dabbed on a cotton bud. 3. Let dry for 24 hours before putting the mug in a cold oven on a cookie sheet. Bake at 210 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. 4. Leave the mug in the oven until oven has cooled (to reduce cracking).

Choi Kwang Do - Noah Conlan

Swim Skills Siblings – Emma and Ben Pullar

Ten-year-old Noah Conlan has been overseas and back, representing Australia in the prestigious sport of Choi Kwang Do. Noah attended the World Choi Kwang Do Championships in Seoul, South Korea for the 2015 World Championships which was held last October. Noah starred in the Under 15 Colour Belt division, defeating competitors from around the globe including USA, Russia, India, Great Britain, Italy and South Korea. Noah returned to Australia with a trifecta of medals, including two World Title gold medals - one in the Speed Drill and one in the Pattern categories as well as a bronze in the Shield Spar category and gained recognition from Choi Kwang Do worldwide Grand Master Pereira who singled Noah out and made a special note of his exceptional performance. In June 2016, Noah also represented Australia for the first time in the North Queensland Games, which were held here in Cairns. “The NQ Games gave the people of Cairns a chance to see Choi Kwang Do at its absolute best,” Choi Kwong Do instructor, Barry Hampton explains. And Noah surpassed expectations, receiving One Gold and Two Silver. Noah has inspired all students who train with him and excels in all things from school work to martial arts. “As Noah’s instructor I am proud of all of this young man’s achievements,” Barry tells PakMag. “He is a great example how you can have anything if you work hard at it.” Fifth Degree International Instructor, Barry Hampton has run Choi Kwang Do Cairns Central for the past 14 years. Barry has overseen the training and advancement of over 85 Black Belts throughout this time ranging from 1st to 3rd Dan. To learn more about the programs offered through Choi Kwang Do, contact info@ckdcairns.com.au or call Barry at 0414 782 189.

Long-time, high-achieving Swim Skills student, nineyear-old Emma Pullar introduced her 10-month-old brother, Ben to his first Hot Tots lesson, the class where Emma herself started her eight-year-long swimming career. Emma passed the baton to Ben as she graduated from swimming in the Turbo Turtles senior squad to pursue competitive swimming. Emma’s parents, Grace and Mark enrolled Emma as a 12-month-old in 2008. “We started swimming with Emma because we had family and friends with pools. She had confidence but no concept of water or safety,” says Grace. Emma remembers those days when she would “swim under the watering can and then chase the balls.” These days her focus is on bigger things. “I hope to go to the Olympics to represent Australia and my family in PNG.” Swimming has been part of the talented tween’s weekly routine for eight years now and Emma has learned “selfdiscipline and to challenge herself” from these sessions. “Emma now competes with older children due to the stroke technique and form she has learned at Swim Skills.” Mark and Grace have been watching from the sidelines since Emma was placed in a preschool class when she was three-years-old. However, the proud parents have taken the plunge back into the pool with baby Ben. Emma’s good example is rubbing off on Ben. Teacher, Jess Kelly says, “Ben’s abilities have grown week to week. It helps to have confident and experienced parents, and a big sister to show him the way.” "We are proud of Emma and her achievements in the pool, and are honoured to have taken her from a baby to a competitive swimmer," says Swim Skills owner, Peter Dalle Cort. “Swim Skills hope to do the same for Ben.” Formerly known as “Essential Skills Swim School”, Swim Skills have recently rebranded. They are the same team, but with a fresh new look, updated programs and renovated facilities. To find out more about Swim Skills programs’ email info@swimskills.com.au or call the team at 4045 2782.

STORY Kelly Cresswell What do you buy the man who has everything this Father’s Day? How about a GBR Helicopter experience? For just $49 per person you can send Dad and the kids up, up and away for a “Taste of Heli” experience they will never forget. I was recently invited by GBR Helicopters to test out the Taste of Heli experience with my two girls. After picking the girls up from school early (I am back in the running for the Mother of the Year award) we headed to the Pier to start our adventure. After watching the safety briefing video we headed to the landing pad to join the pilot and prepared to be lifted up. My girls especially loved wearing the super-cool headphones and the pilot was more than happy to answer their bazillion questions. If you’d like a “sneak-peak” of the flight … head to the PakMag Cairns Facebook page where you can see a “live stream” of our flight! So what is the Taste of Heli exactly? It’s a five minute tour and a great introduction into flying. Starting at the Cairns airport or at the Lagoon landing pad, the tour heads over

the beautiful waters of Cairns where you can see some of Cairns’ best attractions like never before. GBR Helicopters depart daily from the city and have various packages available. They cater for weddings, conferences, birthday parties and other events as well as individual flights. If you’re looking for more than just a taste, you can explore rainforests, waterfalls, even the reef, with GBR Helicopters. GBR is locally-owned and operated and has been a family favourite for locals and tourists for 20 years. If your kids have ever longingly stared at the helicopters as they take off, take advantage of this great opportunity and give the family an adventure they won’t soon forget. Just make sure you take your camera along! To purchase this ultimate Father’s Day experience for the man in your life call 4081 8888, email reservations@gbrhelicopters.com.au or visit www.gbrhelicopters.com.au.

1. It’s under $50! $49 per person to be exact. 2. It’s one of the best ways to experience the true beauty of Cairns. 3. It’s great for children of all ages. Children under three sit on mum or dad’s lap. 4. It’s extremely popular – so book early to avoid disappointment

Unlike a majority of women, most men prefer comfort over style. This makes them very fussy when it comes to what they wear. Men are tactile so always choose good quality fabrics that will not itch. 100 per cent cotton is a fabric that breathes well and is agreeable to the Australian climate. Some men like V neck or round neck T-shirts. Find out his comfort preferences before making any purchases. That way he is more likely to wear what you’ve chosen.

Cubby Houses

WITH THE BLOCK’S CARO & KINGI

Every child needs a little area to call his or her own. And this is exactly what a cubbyhouse can provide – a small (to you) but spacious (to your child) area where a child can go to play, create and reflect. There is no exact science to designing an indoor or outdoor cubby house. It comes down to the personal taste of your child as well as the space that you are working with. But below are some basic tips for designing both indoor and outdoor cubby houses with flair and fun. INDOOR CUBBY HOUSES

OUTDOOR CUBBY HOUSES

The name of the game when creating a cubby house indoors is cosiness. Sometimes kids need a bit of a time out and having a dome of comfort is a great way to let them have their own space that helps to shape their identity.

Outdoor cubby houses are often a lot more detailed and bigger than indoor ones. And while indoor cubbies provide a great area for children to reflect, outdoor cubby houses offer a space for children to play in an area that is all their own.

Start with a tepee, add cushions, blankets and a few wicker baskets to hold quiet activity supplies such as colouring-in books and crayons, picture books, puzzles and a few of his or her favourite stuffed animals.

Consider creating a cooking nook with a tea set, pretend kitchen, BBQ set or mud area. Add a table and chairs setting and some shelving to hold their items.

Keep the lighting calm and serene with fairy lights or a cute reading light. No parent wants to trip over a cubby house every time they come inside or need to vacuum so place the cubby in a corner which allows for privacy for the child but also provides adequate supervision.

Consider adding a chalk board or even a letterbox to the front of the house so you and your child can exchange messages while in your private areas. And be sure to make time to come over to your child’s cubby for tea or a BBQ every once and a while. The benefit of having either an indoor or an outdoor cubby house is that it provides children with their own space all the while allowing you to supervise (and hopefully get a few things done while the kids play). BUYING YOUR FIRST HOME? Becoming a homeowner is the dream of many Australians, but we all know that getting into the property market for the first time isn’t easy. That’s why a plan, good savings habits and realistic expectations are important.

Set a budget and plan for the unexpected. • Review the amount of money coming in (your income) and list all your regular expenses.

Eliminate Debt. • The less money you owe elsewhere, the better position you’ll be in for a home loan.

• Remember to leave a little extra aside for unexpected costs and the occasional treat.

• Be aware of extra debt such as credit cards, store cards, car loans and personal loans – the interest you’re paying can add up fast.

• Any money left over at the end of the month could be set aside for your deposit.

• Work on paying debts off – start with the smallest debt or highest interest.

• As your deposit grows you can move your savings to a higher interest earning account.

• Why not look at rolling your debt into a personal loan or low interest rate card?

Little things add up.

Know what you’re entitled to.

• Simple changes to your spending patterns can mean big savings with minimal impact on your lifestyle.

• As a first home buyer, you may be entitled to a government grant which could help towards the cost to purchase your home. Why not check your entitlement out with the Qld Office of State Revenue?

• You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars every year just by packing your lunch, turning off the lights, avoiding takeaways and shopping around for the best price on various products and services. • Put aside what you have saved in making these changes into a dedicated bank account set aside especially for your deposit.

• If you are considering building your first home research building companies, visit on site displays, doing your homework can save you so much time and money. Your first home is likely to be the biggest investment decision you ever make.

So it pays to look to a trusted financial partner for a home loan that will suit your needs now and into the future. Bendigo Bank has been in the business of helping people buy their first home for more than 150 years. So why not make an appointment with your local Bendigo Bank lender to discuss your home loan options by calling any of our 17 Far North Queensland branches and make a difference to your community as well! pakmag ADVERTORIAL

SKIN CANCER And Your Pet STORY Jane Quinn

With the beautiful sunny weather we experience all year round, everyone who lives in Cairns is well aware of the skin cancer risk and the importance of ‘slipping, slopping and slapping’ every day. But what about our pets?

As well as protecting your human family members, it’s equally important to protect your pets from sun damage. Even though most pets are covered in fur, which does act as a natural sunscreen, their skin can still be affected by harmful UV rays and skin cancers are not uncommon. Many pets love to sunbathe and, as a result are at risk of sunburn and skin cancers such as carcinomas and melanomas. Whilst commonly seen in white cats and dogs around the thinly furred nose and ears, pets that sunbake on their backs are also prone to developing skin cancers on their tummies. Ideally, limiting your pet’s exposure to the sun is best, but if your pets are sun lovers there are some ways to help protect them from damaging UV rays whilst they participate in their favourite activity.

SLIP into a Sun Shirt If your pet loves to sunbathe on its back, a sun shirt is worth considering. With lots of different styles and designs available they not only provide excellent protection but look great to.

SLAP on Doggles Whilst hats for pets are rarely seen, sunglasses are gaining popularity for dogs with white skin around their eyes. ‘Doggles’ are a popular brand available and have UV coating on the lens to protect the eyes.

SLOP on (Zinc-free) Pet Sunscreen Sunscreen is not only for humans. Applying sunscreen daily, particularly to the ears, nose and belly is a great way

74

SEPTEMBER 2016 www.pakmag.com.au

to protect the skin. There are sunscreens available which are specifically formulated for pet skin. When selecting a sunscreen, it’s important to ensure it does not contain zinc as this can be toxic to dogs and cats.

Detection and Treatment of Skin Cancer Early detection is the key to treating skin cancers. If you find a lump or notice changes in the colour of the skin, it’s important to have your pet examined by our veterinarians. Whilst treatment depends on the type of skin cancer present, there are various options available to treat skin cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. If you are concerned about lumps or bumps on your pet it’s important to get them checked out sooner rather than later. Call us at either of our locations to make an appointment.
