Hello and welcome to PakMag’s Guide To Schools. As parents, we know that choosing the right school for your child is not an easy task. So many things need to be considered. Will the school teach my child more than academics? Is the school in a location that suits my family? Does the school cater for special needs? How much are the fees? These are some of the many things families want to know at a glance. That’s why we’ve created our school guide - to take out the guesswork, to bypass the research and to save you time. We’ve compiled a full directory of all the schools in Far North Queensland so you can see all the options available to you. Plus we dig deeper with almost thirty primary and secondary schools to showcase what they have on offer and give you more insight. If you see a “play” button, please check out the school review video. If you have any feedback on how we can make this guide better for edition three, please email admin@m2f.com.au We hope this guide helps you on your journey to find a school, and wish you all the best with your decision making. Good luck and don’t forget to tell everyone, you read it in PakMag.

FAQ’S 1. How do catchment areas work? Public Catchment areas ensure every Queensland student from Prep to Year 12 is able to enrol at their local state school. The state school within your catchment area is the one closest to your home. You can still apply for enrolment at a state school if you reside outside of the catchment area, but enrolment is not guaranteed and your child will be placed on a waiting list. You can find your catchment area at www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap Catholic Schools Catholic schools and colleges do not have geographical boundaries or catchment areas, so you can apply to the school you wish. However, many schools experience high enrolment demand and may have waiting lists. You can enrol up to two years in advance and there is an enrolment fee to apply. Private Schools Private or Independent schools also do not have defined geographical boundaries or catchment areas. There is no restriction on which schools you can apply to, but there are often wait lists due to high demand. Again, there is an enrolment fee to apply. 2. When can I enrol my child? In order to enrol in Prep, your child must be five years old by the 30th of June in the year of attendance.

If you are enrolling at a public school and reside within the catchment area, your child is guaranteed a place. You can often enrol at any time, but at least a year in advance is recommended. You may need to contact the school for any specific enrolment information and procedures. Generally speaking, for Catholic and Private Schools, the enrolment period is Terms 1 to 2 for the following year, but this may vary per school although applications are welcome at any time and are subject to vacancies. It’s best to contact the school you want to apply to and ask them directly. 3. How many weeks do students get off per year for school holidays? Each Queensland school year is broken up into four terms. Generally speaking, a term runs for ten weeks, with two weeks school holidays in between. There is one exception over the summer holidays, when many schools wrap up around mid-December and return late January, adding up to six weeks of school holidays. School holiday times for Catholic or Private schools vary, and some senior high school students may finish earlier in December as well. 4. How do I prepare for an interview? Ensure you have completed the enrolment application and that the school has all relevant information (such as previous report cards, if applicable). Prepare any questions you have and bring them along to the interview, and remember to be on time.

OOLS OF CAIRNS CITY AND THE BEACHES

The perfect balance of the city and the beaches Located 10 to 20 minutes’ drive north of the Cairns city centre, each of the beaches has its own unique attractions. Participate in water sports, follow a relaxing walking trail, have a meal at the water’s edge or play at one of the many playgrounds. Build endless sandcastles and find the best places to fish along the beaches of Cairns. The neighbourhoods along the beaches have a peaceful village feel. Many locals are lucky enough to live within walking distance of the beach, while also enjoying the convenience of having shopping centres, restaurants and health facilities nearby. If you choose to live closer to the city, you open up more shopping and entertainment opportunities for yourself while still living a short drive away from the beach. Another excellent option for families is Redlynch Valley and its surrounding areas. Located just a short drive from Cairns City Centre and the beaches, Redlynch Valley is peaceful, lush and home to many creeks, forests and farms.

HOOLS OF SOUTHERN CAIRNS

South of Cairns you’ll discover towering mountain ranges, endless sugar cane fields and numerous forests waiting to be explored. Weekends tend to be filled with dips at the picturesque Behana Gorge, hikes up the iconic Walsh’s Pyramid and delicious meals at one of the many local cafes. There is more to what meets the eye south of Cairns, and plenty of magical locations that can be found off the beaten track. You’ll find many hidden treasures, from refreshing swimming spots to stunning views overlooking the whole region. The region also has plenty to offer for families. S OF THE TABLELANDS AND SURROUNDS

Head into the mountain ranges and discover a world of rolling hills, pristine waterfalls and crater lakes. If you’re chasing the country life but aren’t a big fan of the hot weather, The Tablelands and surrounds is the region for you. From close-knit towns to huge open farmlands and dense forests scattered with waterfalls, you’ll feel right at home on the Tablelands and never run out of areas to explore. It’s also very popular with camping and swimming. As it’s up in the mountains, it’s usually a few degrees cooler up on the Tablelands in comparison to coastal towns. It’s a natural wonderland, and there are plenty of areas waiting to be discovered. Weekends are often filled with outdoorsy activities such as kayaking, hiking or horse riding. While the Tablelands is definitely quieter than Cairns, you’ll find everything you need to enjoy the country life to the fullest.

HE CASSOWARY COAST AND SURROUNDS

Untouched beaches, vast rainforests and small-town vibes is what the Cassowary Coast is all about. The Cassowary Coast is defined as the area in between Babinda and Mutarnee, lining the coast between Cairns and Townsville. While many people pass through on their way up or down the coast, there are many gems in between that are not to be missed. If you’re looking to escape the noise of the city, you’ll find numerous small towns along the Cassowary Coast such as Babinda, Innisfail, Silkwood, Tully, Kurrimine Beach, Mission Beach and Lucinda. If you’re after a taste of the country life while still residing in a tropical climate, you’ll find it here. As an added plus, you’re never far away from the beach, many of which are quiet and untouched.

ONDARY & BOARDING SCHOOLS

Discover the opportunities waiting for you at the secondary and boarding schools in North Queensland. North Queensland is home to a number of secondary schools, all offering a variety of classes, courses and learning opportunities for students. Whether your child has an interest in STEM, The Arts, hospitality, animals or childcare, there is bound to be a school that fosters their interests and helps them turn it into an exciting career. Most schools offer students exciting learning opportunities, such as camping trips, outings to the reef or even the chance to travel overseas. While there are many primary schools in FNQ, there are not as many secondary schools - because of this, some students may have trouble enrolling in their school of choice. Some of these schools have weekly or full-time boarding options to make life easier for those with a long commute. Boarders have access to a range of facilities, help with study and they are taken on excursions in their free time to fun local activities.

Holy Spirit College is a Year 7 to 12 co-educational Catholic youth assistance college offering a second chance for young people who have found mainstream schooling unsuitable. They have two campuses - the main one is in Cooktown with boarding and day facilities, while the Manoora campus is a day schooling only facility. Both facilities provide an alternative to mainstream education and aim to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged young Australians, especially those from low socio-economic backgrounds. The school values a Christian way of living that promotes a commitment to building relationships, respect and responsibilities through care, service and respect for justice and compassion. Holy Spirit operates under guiding principles that underpin and permeate all aspects of the life of the College. As a Catholic school within the Diocese of Cairns and under the administration of the Cairns Catholic Education, Holy Spirit College offers quality learning and teaching, educational experiences that embrace ‘living life to the full’ and an environment that is safe, welcoming and inclusive. The principles inform how members of the College community interact with each other to cultivate and maintain positive and meaningful working relationships. The school focuses on education for disengaged young people which guides their spiritual, social, emotional, academic, and physical development through an engaging and individualised curriculum.

GENERAL

Holy Spirit College offers an alternative style of learning. The College’s vision is to engage every young person in reaching their potential as confident, successful people ready to contribute to society as informed, responsible and productive citizens.
