With Christmas coming up, many people think about donating to charity as a gesture of festive spirit, but for Ren, Ray, and Angie charity work is a livelihood. Whether it’s a children’s charity or a charity for the elderly, these three parents all have one thing in common – they are passionate about helping others and making Townsville a better place to live. to meet up with a group of mums in a similar situation. She thought it would simply be a group of supportive friends, but it snowballed into much more. “We were mums that had coffee together and realised we were all very confused about where to go and what to do as parents. Like any support group we began to share knowledge and tips.” The group then turned to an online environment, where they created their organisation’s website, as well as an e-mailing list and Facebook page, whereby they could share information and tips with even more parents in the Townsville area. Eventually the once small group of mums found enough demand that they set up their own office in Kirwan. They now offer services to any families in the Townsville area looking for support or information. “We didn’t realise that it would have such an effect and that there were so many parents in Townsville walking the same path as us. If not dealt with carefully and compassionately, Christmas can easily become a time of pain and sadness for children rather than one of merriment and joy. Children need to be children at Christmas. They should be preoccupied with dreams of Santa and reindeers; not filled with guilt over their warring parents. Curriculum is at the heart of school learning. And at the heart of curriculum is reading, that is why it so important to us to get this right. in order for us to do this, we have recruited the help of a literacy expert. We are always looking for ways in which to lead the field and are constantly evaluating not only what we are teaching but how we are teaching. this has already lead to some very exciting breakthroughs and will ensure that our students are receiving the best learning opportunities the school can offer. What is even more exciting is that as a part of this progress we will be employing our own, on site literacy coach for next year! this is seen as a major breakthrough in the quality of the education we are delivering to your children, our students.

Mini Vol-au-vents
• Whole fruit cake (we use dark but light works as well)
• Pack of 12 mini vol-au-vents cases (Woolworths)
• Alcohol - we use sherry but rum is also good
• 100 g diced bacon
• White chocolate melts
• 1/2 cup grated cheese
Recipe thanks to: Marcy holdsworth
• Tin of creamed corn
• Glazed cherries
Method Break the whole cake up in to little bits into a bowl, pour alcohol over the cake (I never measure but so it makes it moist but not soggy). Cover in Plastic Cling Wrap and set aside for a day or two. Then take teaspoons of the mixture and roll into balls until all the cake mixture is used. Cut the Glazed cherries into quarters. Melt your white chocolate buttons, then put a small dollop of white chocolate on top of each ball with a piece of cherry on each. You can also cut up Mint Leave lollies and place along side if you want to get really fancy. Refrigerate. They look great presented in mini patty pans.
Method Cook vol-au-vents in oven to warm them, while this is happening, cook the diced bacon in a pan and then take vol-au-vent cases out of oven. With a teaspoon put creamed corn, some diced bacon and a little grated cheese into the cases. Put them back in the oven until the cheese is melted. A great recipe for parties or after school snack.

It is a well-documented fact that although Child Restraints have improved over the last 20 years, parents are still not installing them correctly. Studies consistently show that as much as 85-90% of self-fitted restraints are fitted incorrectly. The manufacturers of restraints provide instruction booklets and stickers that must be followed closely. If you’re still not confident seek professional help.
[4] Restraint connected to the wrong anchor point – many vehicles have a luggage tie down point too so be sure you’re using the correct one
Some of the most common mistakes to look out for are:
[5] Shoulder harness straps at the wrong height – they should be level with shoulder height or slightly above, NEVER below.
[1] Wrong seat belt pathway used to secure the restraint to the vehicle seat [2] Restraint facing the wrong way (rear facing for infants up to 9kg and forward facing for 9kg+)
[6] Shoulder straps are twisted – this concentrates the force inwards rather than spreading it and can cause injury [7] Shoulder straps are not adjusted firmly to the child
[3] Front seats of the vehicle jammed on the restraint in the rear facing position – there must always be a gap between the car seat and child seat

Remember, it doesn’t matter how good your restraint is if it isn’t fitted correctly so use professional help to ensure it really is protecting your child.

tiny teeth in tatters The tiny teeth of Australian toddlers are rotting and dental researchers at the University of Sydney are have just received funding to start a long-term study to find out why. Oral Health lecturer Doctor Amit Arora who is leading the study says: “The Child Dental Health Survey of Australia reported that 45 percent of 5-year-olds had one or more decayed or missing teeth and 10 percent of those children examined were found to have more than seven decayed teeth. Also, 40 percent of the 5-6-year-olds who participated in the survey had up to 5 missing or decayed teeth,” While it is widely recognised that breastfeeding is best for baby, on-demand breastfeeding has been associated with poorer oral health outcomes.

aquarium as ‘the turtle hospital?’ One of the main missions of the turtle hospital, and Reef HQ itself, is to promote environmental awareness amongst all ages. Even though the turtle hospital attracts all kinds of people, Reef HQ’s director, Fred Nucifora, says that it is best to start developing an environmental awareness at a young age. “The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and Reef HQ are big believers that the children of today are the decision makers of tomorrow. If they can be active, informed and empowered citizens - the sustainable nature of our ecosystems, and animals that call it home will be in good hands,” he says.

“(Children) come in as a family, so they just come with Mum or Dad, or they come in with school groups. Children of all ages, including pre-school, come through the aquarium,” he says. One mum, Laura Kleinhans, found that her children took a shine to the turtle hospital. Her two sons, and her friend’s son all took part in the tour of the turtle hospital and she says one of her sons still talks about it.
“They took a shine to one turtle, and they were talking to him through the glass!” she says. Kleinhans says that she would recommend other parents to take their kids along to the turtle hospital, because of the positive and educational impact it had. “It was great for the kids to see the turtles and learn about them in that environment,” she says. The hotline number for a marine animal rescue is: 1300 130 372

W “Last Christmas my 7 year old son received an electric helicopter off my Dad so they went out in the backyard to master the art of flying it. Soon after they came back inside as my son had flown it straight into the pool, where it sunk to the bottom. Since he was so upset, my Dad bought him a new one the next day. They were banned from flying it in the backyard again so they went out the front. Five minutes later they were back in – this time my son had flown it so high it ended high up in a gum tree! When it finally fell down five months later it was still working...damn!!! Morale to the story - don’t buy the kids electric helicopters!!!”
From: Chantel Divers “My family are mad about Christmas to the point where you have to wake everyone up in the house before you’re allowed to see the presents. One year all seven of us bowled into the room together to see the dog having an early lunch on the entire collection of gifts. The only thing that got ‘returned’ later in the day were my grandmothers gold earrings but funnily enough she didn’t want them!”
From: Leanne Rangitaawa “When my daughter was two, I took her Christmas shopping with me during the July toy sales because I couldn’t find a sitter. As I put the toys into the trolley, I was telling her that the items were for her little cousins. This one’s for Mia, this one’s for Payton etc. On Christmas morning, she
opened one of her presents from Santa, looked at me and said “Mum, this isn’t mine. This is Mia’s” and promptly threw it to the side. She still, almost two years later, tells me that Santa gave her the wrong presents!”
From: Su Corea “As per tradition, in our family we always cooked symbolic items in to the Christmas pudding (ring=imminent wedding, thimble=not likely to ever marry, coin=rich man etc). It all seemed like harmless fun until the year my great-grandmother choked on the thimble and my granduncle had to thump her until the thimble popped out. I was nine at the time and had to go to the bathroom to laugh my guts out. Needless to say no-one baked anything in to the pudding after that.”
