note

Hi everyone and welcome to the 23rd edition of PakMag in Townsville. This month our resident psychologist Jutta Dempsey has written about praising our kids and how to do it effectively. It’s been a hotly debated topic in the media and we wanted to get some practical advice about how we can support our kids better. We’re very excited about our next PakClub – it will be an awesome Halloween themed party at the Northern Beaches Leisure Centre with three hours of FREE fun, games, and a movie by the pool. Enjoy October and make sure you check our What’s On guide for all that’s happening around town this month. Happy reading and remember to tell everyone you read it in PakMag.

better than last week and I noticed that you worked on your spelling every day”, is more likely to make them pay attention and try harder.

Researchers have discovered three important results of the increased praise movement:

[2] Give descriptive praise

[1] When children were praised for being intelligent or smart they were more likely to blame poor performance on a lack of ability and gave up sooner. However, children who were praised for their effort performed roughly 25% better on a set of problems as they persisted longer and enjoyed the challenge more. (1) Dweck and Mueller [2] Evaluative praise makes the child dependent on the approval of others rather than increasing their independence. “You are so generous” makes the child dependent on the judgement of the person who praised. (2) Joan LeFebvre Uni. Of Wisconsin [3] “Over-focus on self-esteem over the last 30 years has produced more young people who are low in empathy and high in narcissism” (3) Professor McGarth, RMIT

Awesome Try

So where does this now leave us as parents? This research may leave some parents feeling lost after thinking they were doing the right thing for their children. However, this research has now given us some useful insights into how to do even better as parents.

Great Effort Well Done!

Good Job

The process of praising children effectively has a lot more nuances to it than you may realise, writes Jutta Dempsey Over the last few decades there has been a movement in parenting towards giving our children increased praise in order to protect and build their self-esteem. However, how we praise our children has recently been put under scrutiny

6

www.pakmag.com.au

with different researchers and experts finding that indiscriminate praising may make our children more dependent, egocentric and selfabsorbed as well as making them more prone to bullying behaviour.

There is no doubt that praise from parents, the most important people in their lives, is crucial to all aspects of a child’s development, from academic and sporting achievements to social and emotional functioning. However, some

Instead of evaluating what they’ve done, tell them what you’ve observed them do so they can recognise the truth and credit themselves. For example, “when you saw Sue forgot her hat and you played with her under the shelter so she wasn’t alone I could see she was much happier.” This comment helps your child see how their actions have had a positive effect. The key question to ask yourself here is: does my praise make my children more dependent upon me and my approval or do I help them see a clear picture of their strengths, abilities and accomplishments?

[3] Be Sincere Children are experts at reading body language and tone of voice. They know whether you’re being sincere or not so when you’re genuinely pleased with their behaviour allow your child to see it. Give them a hug or a smile.

[4] Role Model

Here are some tips to start using in the way you praise your children:

Whatever skills, attitudes and behaviours you want to see in your children, must be role modelled at home. Giving yourself a break when something does not go perfectly and articulating that “its okay that I make mistakes because I learn so much from them” heightens children’s risk-taking and persistence.

[1] Provide specific feedback

[5] Ask Questions

Children will see general comments like “you’re so smart” as something they can’t change so they are less likely to make an effort to get better. Making specific comments about something they’ve done well is more effective. For example, saying something like “you did

Show an interest in what your children are working on and foster discussions and an evaluation of what they have done. For example, “you’ve worked on that project all afternoon – can you tell me about it?”

great advice Whilst parents may need to develop and adapt the way they praise their children as a result of this recent research, there will still never be any evidence to support being negative and critical. Comments such as “you’re so stupid” go right to the core of who a child is and lasts for a lifetime. It has been said that it takes six positive statements to undo one negative one but labels like “stupid” just stick forever. www.pakmag.com.au

Sam’s Makeover Wardrobe Personal stylist Gerlinda Aras: “Sam rarely gets the chance to dress up so on our shopping trip we decided to choose a smart casual outfit that she could wear for lunch with the girls or out to dinner. Sam’s dark colouring suits bright bold colours – this electric blue is very eye catching.

Hair stylist Emma: “Sam’s hair is completely natural with a lovely wave that we wanted to work with. Since she has five children and not much time for herself we opted for a style that would be easy to wash and wear so we took off all the length and layered it heavily on top to give the curl more movement. We also coloured the perimetre of her hair a darker violet and the top a vibrant violet red tone for a bit of fun.”

Toxins

Family

issues Story thanks to Jacqui Albrecht

Home Safety We all know about the need to keep poisons locked away in a safe cupboard but are we aware of other risks that may be lurking in our homes? Jacqui Albrecht’s personal experiences took her on a journey to a greener home.

My daughter used to eat soap when she was a toddler. Of course it wasn’t ideal but it seemed harmless enough. Then one day she managed to get hold of a bright pink rose scented bar of soap and as soon as she put it in her mouth, her lips started to swell. At the time we were on holiday in the middle of nowhere, the nearest town was over an hour away. Luckily she didn’t actually swallow any of the soap but can you imagine what might have happened to her throat if she did? As a mother this incident really frightened me and caused me to do more research into the potential dangers of seemingly innocent products that I had in my home. I discovered that the Australian government doesn’t monitor chemicals in household products so most of the information available comes from the US. As an example, one study by The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analysed 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products and found the following: • • • • • •

884 of the chemicals were toxic 314 caused biological mutation 218 caused reproductive complications 778 caused acute toxicity 148 caused tumors 376 caused skin and eye irritations

In fact studies by US EPA has found that chemicals in household cleaners, personal care products and cosmetics have been linked to birth defects, cancers, reproductive problems, allergies, asthma, eczema, headaches, depression, physiological abnormalities, fibromyalgia, ADD/HDHD, lupus,

MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and much more. It makes for very sobering reading. Since discovering that there are potentially thousands of toxic chemicals lurking in households I have taken measures to reduce my own family’s exposure to them in our home. I have used bi-carb, vinegar, eucalyptus and tea tree oil in the past for cleaning my home. I’ve even tried my hand at making various soaps and insect repellent. Personally I found them to be time consuming (though fun) and with three small children and work, I really didn’t want to spend my time cleaning and making alternatives. I also found that products at the supermarket that stated they were environmentally friendly only meant that the packaging was recyclable. They still contained harsh chemicals and phosphates. Ultimately my research led me to a company that makes and sells green and non-toxic versions of a range of products from cosmetics to baby care and cleaning products. I have been using them ever since and have been enjoying the smell of a fresh clean house ever since without the need for chemical fragrances. I’ve also noticed an improvement in my own health even though I didn’t consider myself unhealthy – walking down the cleaning aisle in the supermarket now gives me a headache. But the biggest reward of all is knowing that I’m not exposing my children to potentially hazardous chemicals. For more information go to: www.evsaferhomes.com/australia www.pakmag.com.au
