Publisher's Note Spring is a season of hope, and this one is more than ever! The days are getting longer, warmer, and more colourful. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and cherry trees are blooming. Masks are no longer mandatory in some places and travel restrictions are lifted. The Cherry Blossom Festival is virtual again this year on April 10. Easter long weekend follows. We welcome visitors to Steveston for the International Judo Tournament. Tour operators will be in town from April 23 to May 31 for the Tourism Neighbourhood Challenge. In May, we celebrate Mother’s Day and the season opener of the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market. The Spot Prawn and Seafood Celebration takes place from May 18 to June 5. This new event is organized by Tourism Richmond and offers locals and visitors an opportunity to sample fresh seafood, learn about the fishing industry and explore the village. On the cover is Glenda Walliser, owner of Bon Retour. Her boutique is a treasure trove of gently preloved and stylish women’s clothing, designer handbags, jewellery, accessories, along with the latest footwear fashions at affordable prices. Read about Richard Roberto, the owner of Win Win Chick-N, who opened his business on Canada Day 2018. Win Win’s homestyle chicken is locally-sourced and ordered fresh daily. Richard’s clever marketing campaigns attract people from all over Metro Vancouver to the village.

Did you know that Steveston has three separate societies that run three different historic cityowned sites? Read about Steveston Historical Society, London Heritage Farm Society, and Britannia Heritage National Historic Site Society and discover how each has a volunteer board and operating agreement with the City of Richmond. We welcome Sprinkles Gelato and Dessert House to Steveson. Pathfinder Dog Ranch opened just east of Steveston village and offers day and overnight care for dogs and training. Colony Bar is preparing to open this summer on the Onni waterfront site. Meow & Bark is now closed, and Benchmark Botanicals has moved out of the area. Patio season has arrived! There are plenty of patios where you can drink your morning coffee and watch the village come to life, or dine and watch the sunset over scenic Steveston Harbour. Gardening continues to be more popular than ever and you can find everything you need at both Prickly Pear Garden Centre and Wong’s Greenhouse and Nursery. Events are now back and preparations are underway for a scaled-down 75th annual Steveston Salmon Festival spread over two weeks. It is wonderful to see businesses opening at full capacity again and it proves how important local support is to help a community thrive. Enjoy the village this spring!

BON RETOUR:
A Passion for Upcycled Designer Fashion Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Sandra Steier and Carolynne Palla
Calling all fashionistas! Are you aware there is a store in Steveston village where you can purchase women’s designer clothing in like-new condition for a fraction of the original retail price while avoiding the environmental cost of fast fashion?
“It was scary when I opened the door of my original location on Cambie Street in 1987 until customers started arriving. I sold a bunch of stuff that first day and then I knew there was a market,” says Glenda.
It has been 35 years since Glenda Walliser took the leap from staying at home with her young children to opening her own business, Bon Retour, a consignment boutique that specializes in higher-end apparel and accessories.
Bon Retour was based in Vancouver for 25 years until Glenda found its forever home in Steveston in 2011.
Glenda has loved fashion for as long as she can remember. As a teenager, she enjoyed trading clothes with her friends. She says, “My friend’s closets were always much more interesting than mine.”
People are not always aware that Bon Retour is a consignment store. When they step inside they find current, stylish clothing, designer handbags, jewellery, accessories, and the latest footwear fashions.

Glenda remarks, “Bon Retour specializes in gently preloved designer brand clothing. We offer quality brands you want at very affordable prices.”
“When customers discover we carry high-end labels for as much as 90 per cent off retail prices they get excited!” Merchandise is always changing as items sell and new pieces come in on consignment. Some of the brands you may be lucky enough to find include Chanel, Coach, Donna Karan, Eileen Fisher, Gucci, Kate Spade, Lady Dior, Louis Vuitton, Ted Baker and Tiffany.
April - May 2022
Glenda finds it satisfying to run a business that supports sustainability and saves clothes from the landfill. She knows some people who will only purchase consignment clothing, herself included. Her clients see the value in upcycling clothing which is more popular now than ever before.

The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters, therefore choosing to purchase pre-loved clothing is not only a sustainable choice but also a necessary one for our fragile planet.
New consignors are always welcome. The best time to consign is at the beginning of the upcoming season. Glenda says, “In the small 500 square foot space every hanger counts. The clothing needs to be in excellent condition, current and different.
Authentic designer labels and well recognized brands of clothing and accessories are best suited for re-sale, although all quality pieces will be considered.” If you are new to consignment, call the store to make an appointment prior to your first visit. Bon Retour’s website features a helpful list on how to consign with the store. Glenda will start looking at summer attire in May. A shift occurred during the pandemic as the demand for dressy clothing to attend special events and formal occasions dropped, however, as things return to normal these items will be back. Customer service is of utmost importance to Glenda and her two employees Lina and Sally. While some clients prefer to browse quietly, others enjoy being fully assisted, and will even leave the store wearing the items they purchase. Helping people with their style is one of Glenda's favourite parts of her job and putting an outfit together that someone loves always brings a smile to her face.

The boutique has many loyal customers and consignors, with some dating back to the early days when the shop was located on West Broadway and Spruce Street.
“It’s like Christmas when customers discover a great find. People come in and say they’ve been looking for something for years. When they find a piece of clothing in their size, they are thrilled. Some customers even have their names on a waiting list for certain items.” Glenda mentions, “We put out new items daily. You never know what treasure you might find, but we guarantee it will be unique.” “Without a doubt, the greatest reward of my business is the friendships I have made. It is such a social atmosphere. I don’t think I will ever retire — I love my business so much.” If you are looking for designer labels while saving money, or if you are looking for ways to care for Mother Earth and want to stop fuelling the fast fashion industry, pay a visit to Bon Retour. You may find, like their many devoted customers, that the boutique becomes your one-stop fashion shop! Bon Retour 3806 Moncton Street Richmond BC V7E 3A6 Telephone 604-370-1951 www.bonretour.com

WIN WIN CHICK-N: Chicken Made With Love Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos submitted
What is Win Win Chick-N’s secret ingredient that makes their fried chicken so popular? Although owner Richard Roberto won’t reveal the recipe, he says, “Win Win’s chicken is made with love.” This little gem of a restaurant is located on First Avenue between Moncton and Bayview Streets. The family-owned business opened with a bang on Canada Day 2018 when customers lined up for a taste. Richard is no stranger to the restaurant industry; in the Philippines, he owned and operated a 40 seat dine-in gourmet burger restaurant. He chose Steveston as his first location for Win Win Chick-N because he loves the area and visited it frequently with his family for walks, ice cream and fish and chips. He says, “My family laughed at me, saying it wasn’t the right place to open my business due to all of the coffee shops, sushi and fish and 24
chips restaurants—I said that’s exactly why I want to open it here!” The restaurant has been such a success that Richard opened a second location in Vancouver on Main Street at S.E. Marine Drive in February 2019, and he is on the lookout for a third space in Metro Vancouver.
“Our food is as fresh as you can get.” While some recipes have Filipino influences, Win Win Chick-N is branded as homestyle chicken. The locally-sourced poultry is ordered fresh daily. Marinades are made in-house and processed foods and preservatives are not used. Richard says, “Our focus is on home-style cooking rather than fast-food style meals.”

Customers can’t get enough of Win Win Chick-N’s unique flavours. The hand-breaded crispy and juicy chicken differs from their competitors.
“There is a simplicity to the taste; the chicken is not overly battered.” Customer favourites include the original fried chicken which is sold as a single piece all the way up to 20 pieces. The menu also features combo specials which offers customers an opportunity to try some other popular menu items including the Filipino style macaroni. The dish is made with a sweet sauce that includes lean pork and hot dog slices. Richard says, “It’s basically a full meal by itself and you get your protein and carbohydrates!” He adds, “In the Philippines, it is everywhere we go – parties, birthdays, gatherings.” Another big hit is Win Win’s crispy chicken sandwich, and it happens to be one of Richard’s

personal favourites. He says, “I’m a big fan of white meat but I love our drumsticks. They are so easy to eat. I also love our sandwich. Eight to 11 ounces of organic breast meat is partnered with a brioche bun. It’s simply delicious and it is really filling!”

Filipino cake made from purple yams. If you are hoping to bring one home, this tantalizing sweet treat can be custom ordered in larger sizes. In the beginning, Richard was actively involved on all fronts of the business until the two restaurants were up and running. Now he focuses his attention on marketing, monitoring customer feedback and customer service. “I used to work in sales. I learned how to be on the front line and how to handle the good, the bad and the ugly. I learnt how to be a problem solver.” Win Win uses social media platforms such as Instagram very effectively. They connect with influencers who are eager to cross-promote on their posts. It benefits the food-loving influencers and helps promote Win Win Chick-N to a wider market. Locally sourced potatoes are used to create hand-cut, double-fried French fries; they are made fresh with every order. What is a meal without dessert to cap it off? Richard’s sister-in-law, Wendy Vergel de Dios, makes personal-sized ube cakes, a traditional

On Valentine’s Day, the restaurant sold Valentine’s bouquets, but not the standard dozen long-stemmed roses. Win Win’s chicken bouquet contained 12 drumsticks and a small ube cake. Richard says, “People loved it!” Prior to the pandemic, Win Win Chick-N hosted customer appreciation events including selling drumsticks for $1 to say thank you to their customers. These promotions attracted big crowds, and Richard looks forward to seeing them return when it is safe to do so. The business has always been based on takeout and this helped it survive through the tough days of the pandemic; while many restaurants had to pivot they did not have to. Most of their business is walk-in although orders can also be placed online through Uber, Skip the Dishes, Door Dash or Fan Tuan delivery services. “It is rewarding to see happy and satisfied customers. To see them smile and nod with appreciation once they taste our chicken makes me feel grateful. We appreciate the support the community has given us. We are here for the long term,” Richard says.

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Current events and the ongoing pandemic has made me feeling stressed and anxious. Can you suggest some things to alleviate these awful feelings? Never downplay stress or anxiety. A low level of stress and anxiety is normal and can actually be healthy in that it keeps us alert. However, if it becomes bothersome, be sure to seek the guidance of a trained professional such as a psychiatrist and counselor. Appropriate sleep and diet lifestyle definitely plays a role, as well. Ensure you stay hydrated and have adequate electrolytes on a daily basis. If you cannot omit or eliminate the root cause of the stress and anxiety, then some self-remedies can be safe and effective to try, especially for short-term or milder cases. The Rescue Remedy and Bach Flower Remedy line, with its various lozenges, gels, liquids, and sprays, has been around since the 1930’s and, being homeopathic, is very safe to try without fear of side-effects or interactions; there are even formulations safe for kids, and some specific to sleeping.
Fredrick Cheng, Registered Pharmacist
A passion-flower-based supplement called Pascoflair by Pascoe is effective at curbing mild anxiety episodes, as well as preventing future attacks. Zen-Theanine by AOR is an amino-acid that could inhibit production as well as block the action of excitatory neurotransmitters. For more chronic cases, synergistic combinations containing ashwagandha, GABA, ginseng, vitamin B5 and B6’s, such as Adrenal-Pro by CanPrev or Endo Calm by Emerald Health Naturals provide longer-lasting effects via adaptogenic action. STEVESTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Story and photos submitted Steveston Historical Society (SHS), established in 1976, is a non-profit charitable society with a mandate to preserve and promote the history of Steveston. The Society operates the Steveston Museum Post Office and oversees the operation of the Steveston Museum, Japanese Benevolent Society Building, and the Town Square Park. The Society also hosts the Steveston 20/20 Group which is comprised of most of the nonprofit groups in Steveston, as well as Richmond organizations with an interest in Steveston, including Tourism Richmond. The Steveston 20/20 Group mandate is to establish effective communication between the non-profit groups, to foster a positive working relationship and to facilitate information exchange and networking between the nonprofit groups, the City of Richmond and the merchants, for the betterment of the community. Traditionally the Society programs such as: 38

Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes: Tours incorporating five short plays written especially for SHS, featuring the history of Steveston. The Society commissioned a local playwright to develop these original scripts, as well as a costume designer to design period-appropriate costumes. They partner with Steveston-London Secondary School’s drama department to create an opportunity for students to perform during the summer. (Hiatus during COVID-19). Songs in the Snow - A Vintage Christmas: A winter celebration in partnership with Richmond Arts Coalition highlighting Richmond singers, performers and artists with songs and activities. (It was held virtually the last two years.) A report describing the 2021 consultation and resulting recommendations was approved by Council on November 8, 2021. The City and Steveston Historical Society developed the following guiding directions for future programming at the Steveston Museum and Post Office:
StevestonInsider.com
April - May 2022
• Retain a mix of amenities that serve locals year-round. • Continue to support heritage programming, and improve and raise the profile of existing displays. • Reframe Post Office operations as more than just a business, but a community-meeting place that celebrates local heritage and provides valued services. • Continue to collaborate with Tourism Richmond to explore other options for delivery of visitor services throughout Steveston. • Explore the potential for additional retail services. These guiding directions will shape programming and facility changes taking place over the coming months and years. Planning for these changes started in 2021, with the development of a new vision for the Museum facility, in part to address the departure of the Visitor Centre. Tourism Richmond decided to focus its efforts on supporting visitors to Steveston in ways other than a permanent visitor services counter. Therefore, they will not be continuing service at the Steveston Museum. The Steveston Historical Society is excited to launch a new Pop-up Artist Program in collaboration with the Richmond Arts Coalition which will replace the Visitor Centre activity. This program will offer temporary space for local artists and artisans to demonstrate, exhibit, and sell their work. To support this programming, the City is undertaking a number of alterations to the facility starting in early 2022. Work includes removing the visitor services counter and bank manager's office display, and upgrading the space with new flooring and furnishings, to support art displays and post office storage. This work is supported, in part, by funding from the Government of Canada.
April - May 2022
In addition to the new vision for the main room of the Northern Bank building, a refresh of the displays is planned for late 2022. The new displays are intended to: i) create a deeper understanding and sense of pride in place for local community; ii) connect post office patrons and visitors to the history of the building and Steveston’s postal service; and iii) tell the stories of Steveston’s community not found in other heritage places. Lastly, a number of minor improvements to the Japanese Fishermen’s Benevolent Society building are planned, with the goal to increase awareness of and visitation to the displays inside. These improvements include: • making the entrance off First Avenue accessible during summer season, with exterior improvements to landscaping and signage to increase its visibility; • establishing an engaging, public-facing name for the facility; and • offering new programming and changing displays in the back room of the building. More detailed planning for historical displays and the Japanese Fishermen’s Benevolent Society building will be undertaken in collaboration with local community starting in late 2022. The Steveston Historical Society and City are working together to make these changes and improvements to the building and operations. It is their desire to ensure the site remains responsive to the community over the coming years. BRITANNIA SHIPYARDS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE SOCIETY Story and photos submitted Britannia Shipyards is an authentic representation of a once thriving community of canneries, boatyards, and residences. Many of the buildings date back to 1885 and tell the stories of multi-ethnic residents and workers at the Britannia Cannery and Britannia Shipyards: Chinese, European, First Nations and Japanese. This collection of buildings has national value and was designated a National Historic Site in 1992 by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board. During site hours, visitors are welcome to tour buildings to discover and explore the fascinating stories of those who worked and lived on this historic waterfront. The Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site Society’s purpose is to preserve and to celebrate the history of the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, a living museum, through collaboration with the City of Richmond and the community.
The Society’s role includes assisting with program development, providing a means for community input into capital improvements on the site, managing vessel moorage at the dock, fund raising, site volunteer activities, the preservation of wooden boats, and the promotion of the general knowledge, enjoyment and understanding of the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. If you wish to support the role of the Society or become an active participant on some of the working groups or sub committees, please consider becoming a member. Society members or interested individuals can also get involved in many activities on the site such as registering as a volunteer to help out with minor boat maintenance or projects, join in with others who have a passion for tinkering with east-hope engines that propelled many of the fishing boats built on the site, demonstrating some activities that would have taken place when it was a busy shipyard and cannery, be a greeter in the various site buildings, help maintain some of specialty gardens, and assisting at special events such as the Richmond Maritime Festival. For more information on how you can become involved in the Society or to volunteer at the site please check the websites. LONDON HERITAGE FARM SOCIETY Story submitted Richmond’s long-standing history of farming and agriculture is alive and well at the London Heritage Farm. This farm site was purchased by William London and Charles London in 1886 and on this land they built the London family farmhouse. The London Heritage Farm Society, in partnership with the City of Richmond, supports, preserves and celebrates the authenticity of the London farm and all that it encompasses. This includes authentic artifacts both in the house as well as in and around the barn, including a very old tractor and threshing machine. In addition, the gardens surrounding the house reflect the types of flowers and various herb bushes that would have been found in the London family garden.
grown is organic; many of these types of produce would have been part of the London family vegetable garden. Jams and jellies made from fruit picked at the farm are sold at the Society's gift shop located inside the farmhouse. In addition, visitors can purchase a delicious blend of “London Lady” tea that partners nicely with tempting scones that are baked onsite. Special events are held throughout the year, and during these times visitors can experience a delightful afternoon tea in the home's former dining room. With the end of COVID in sight, the Society will once again host the Mother's Day annual plant sale and the London Family Farm Day, both events are major attractions for Richmond families. The Society welcomes new members! For further information visit the website or email londonhf@telus.net.
The Society endeavours to keep the site and the farmhouse reflective of the era including maintaining the many original varieties of trees and fruit bearing bushes. Beehives, lavender gardens and a duck pond can also be seen as important components of a rich farm life. And don’t forget the chickens! While visiting the farm you will enjoy the activities of the resident chickens and rooster. These creatures love to roam the grounds and use various areas for their daily bath. The London Heritage Farm website has a wonderful video of these activities!

The Society’s promotion of organic gardening and farming is further exemplified in the allotment gardens, which are part of the site. Gardeners for these plots ensure all that is April - May 2022
