Since taking over this well-established dental practice in 2020, Dr. Tiwana has upheld its reputation of providing exceptional patient care. DUNBAR SMILES: A Small Clinic with a Big Heart

Although typically, most people do not get excited at the prospect of a dental appointment, Dunbar Smiles consistently receives glowing testimonials that speak to the kind and professional team that puts patients at ease and delivers excellent results.
Dr. Sabeen Tiwana owns the practice that has been a Dunbar fixture for 50 years. In November 2020, Dr. Tiwana took over the established business from Dr. George Porteous, who, in turn, acquired the practice from the original owner, Dr. Patricia Piller.
Dr. Tiwana shares, “I am happy to have purchased Dunbar Smiles from Dr. Porteous. He was highly respected and had a lot of clients; we continue to honour his memory by keeping his name on the window.”
“We are known for being friendly and approachable, and this helps put patients at ease.”
The goal is to ensure patients feel relaxed and comfortable when they arrive. The waiting room resembles a cozy living room with a sofa, carpet and diverse reading materials; patients are also welcome to help themselves to a cup of coffee.
Dunbar Smiles’s tight-knit team comprises Dr. Tiwana, a hygienist and office manager.
Dr. Tiwana has intentionally kept the familyoriented practice small as she has three children and desires a work-life balance. She says, “It is gratifying to own my practice, and I enjoy the flexibility of being able to work around my family.”
Dr. Tiwana shares, “I’m a stickler for staying on schedule with my appointments — only an emergency might delay me.” She adds, “Emergency patients are always seen the same day, even if they’re not my regular patients. If someone is in pain, I’ll ensure they’re cared for.”
Most of her patients are from the area, and many walk to her office. With Dunbar Smiles’s long history, Dr. Tiwana sees generations of clients, from grandparents to their children and grandchildren.
She says, “Although there are people who have dental anxiety, I see it improving. Some older clients had a bad experience in the past and have avoided seeking dental treatment for many years. We email patients pre-appointment forms to complete, which I will review in person. The experience is very personalized. We discuss their comfort level and dental history. We build rapport and trust in this very relaxed environment.”
Patient satisfaction is one of the great rewards of her career.

Dr. Tiwana comes from a family with many
doctors; however, she chose a profession that combines her two loves, art and science. She holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Demonte University, Lahore, Pakistan, and a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from TUFTS University, Boston, where she specialized in personalized and culturally competent patient care. Drawing on her experience as a female, immigrant, and person of colour, she sought to understand the intersectional impact of these social identities through a faculty and student perspective in academic institutions.
Dr. Tiwana is also a part-time instructor at the University of British Columbia and instructs dental students in clinics when they are operating on patients. In addition, Dr. Tiwana provides free dental checkups for homeless people and refugees at another dental office. Regarding this voluntary service, she says, “I feel I have to do more to help.”
Dunbar Smiles’s standard preventative sixmonth checkups keep smiles bright and healthy. After cleaning and polishing, she sits with patients to discuss gums, oral health, and gum disease.
Dr. Tiwana’s expertise in cosmetic dentistry uses cutting-edge techniques and advanced materials to create beautiful, natural smiles with veneers, crowns, in-lays, and on-lays.

If you are seeking orthodontic treatment, Invisalign is a clear, convenient, and comfortable option to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted without going through the traditional method of aligning teeth with wires and brackets.
While X-rays provide valuable information, with an intraoral camera and 3-D scanner, Dr. Tiwana takes photos of patients’ teeth to monitor if changes have taken place. She can see every aspect of their teeth and mouth with incredible detail, uncovering cracked teeth, plaque deposits, cavities next to fillings, and excessive wear.
Botox is used not only for smoothening wrinkles but also to treat temporomandibular joint disorders, tension-type headaches, bruxism, excessive gingival display, orthodontic
relapse due to severe muscle movement, sialorrhea, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasms and oromandibular pain.
A child’s first dental appointment should be enjoyable. It is recommended that children visit the dentist at age two and return for annual visits. Dunbar Smiles makes a special effort to use pleasant, non-frightening, simple words to describe each treatment. A post-appointment visit to the treasure chest is always a highly anticipated perk!
Dr. Tiwana finds many rewards in her profession; however, she believes the greatest is making a difference daily while doing what she loves. She says, “People genuinely appreciate it — whether it’s pain relief, teeth cleaning, cosmetic procedures, or even root canals and antibiotics."
“I can’t believe it’s been almost five years since I became the owner of Dunbar Smiles. My long-term vision is to expand the practice and eventually move to a larger location in Dunbar, but for now, it’s perfect just the way it is.”

HEAVEN HEAD SPA: A Sanctuary
for Rejuvenation and Relaxation

Heaven Head Spa is one of Dunbar’s newest businesses; it opened at the end of December 2024 and is located in the former space of JD’s Barbershop. Owners Trang (Tracy) Phan and her husband, Tom Pham, saw the need for this service in Dunbar. Although this type of spa is relatively new to Canada, it is very popular in Asian countries, including Vietnam, where the couple are originally from.
The spa underwent renovations to create a soothing environment with white walls, lightcoloured laminate flooring, large mirrors, and comfortable stations for hair washes and head massages. The open-concept design includes one private treatment room.
Heaven Head Spa’s mission is to provide a sanctuary for those seeking scalp wellness and relaxation.
Tracy shares, “Having overcome struggles with scalp issues, I understand the frustration and stress accompanying these problems. I found that natural methods and herbal remedies were the key to restoring my scalp’s health.”
She says, “This organic Eastern shampooing and massage is a holistic method that does more than cleanse hair; it combines therapeutic techniques such as acupressure, massage, and muscle relaxation that targets the neck, head, arms, and shoulders, helping to alleviate tension and promote deep relaxation.”
There are multiple benefits from the shampooing and massage treatment. Your hair and scalp receive a deep cleansing to remove dirt, oil and impurities.
The specialized massages boost health and aid in relaxation and stress reduction. Scalp, neck and shoulder massages help to enhance circulation, relieve muscle tension and reduce stress.
Tracy says, “Scalp massages aid in relieving headaches and improving focus. They improve blood flow to the brain, reducing dizziness, headaches and poor concentration.”
“We are dedicated to delivering personalized care that nurtures both body and mind.”
Six different pampering packages are available. The 45-minute Massage Relax treatment includes a hot towel, relaxation with essential oils, and a head, neck, shoulder, foot, and hand massage. The Silver hour-long treatment consists of a head, neck and shoulder massage, a scalp detox, twice-washed hair, a scalp massage with a water circulation ring and a relaxing blow dry. The one-and-a-half-hour Ruby treatment is the crème de la crème of pampering; it includes all the previously mentioned massages, hairwashing treatments, and the LED light therapy mask. In addition to these packages, there are three more to select from.
Tracy believes, “The light therapy mask is the future of skincare.” This treatment uses varying wavelengths of light to target skin concerns such as acne, fine lines, and inflammation. This relaxing experience is painless, non-invasive, and offers immediate results.
Feedback has been extremely positive. Tracy says, “We receive customer comments telling us how much they love Heaven Head Spa.
They feel relaxed, renewed and refreshed after a relaxing treatment.”
Heaven Head Spa has been very busy since it opened, with weekends being the most popular appointment times. People come from Vancouver’s Westside, Langley, Surrey and Delta to experience the new spa.

Dunbar Community Patrol Celebrates 20 Years of Service

In a landmark celebration on February 13, 2025, the Dunbar Community Patrol (DCP) marked its 20th Anniversary at its annual Social Night, hosted in the Fireside Room at St. Philip’s Anglican Church. This milestone event honoured the volunteers whose steadfast commitment has helped keep the Dunbar neighbourhood safe and connected for two decades.
This year’s celebration, made possible through generous support from the Dunbar Residents’ Association (DRA), brought together patrollers, community leaders, and honoured guests. Among those in attendance were Paul Jordan, Executive Director of the Kerrisdale, Oakridge, Marpole Community Policing Centre;
Carol Volkart, DRA 2nd Vice President and Newsletter Editor; Bruce Gilmour, DRA Past President; Falina; Sonia Wicken, Member-atLarge; and former DCP Chair Meredith Kimball.
The evening commenced with opening remarks from DCP Chairperson Marlene Anderson-Joyce, who led a recognition ceremony celebrating long-serving patrollers. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Carmen Smith and Susan Spiro (10 years), Bridget Duckworth (15 years), and an elite group of seven individuals who have patrolled every year since DCP’s inception: Marlene Anderson-Joyce, Richard Dunsterville, Michelle Lim, Gloria McCormack, Diane Verster, Jan Verster, and Kevin Wade.
Following a brief annual review, guest speaker Paul Jordan addressed attendees on the vital role of community-based safety initiatives, including the Community Policing Centre and Block Watch program. His engaging presentation on local crime prevention strategies was followed by an informative Q&A session.
A highlight of the evening was the celebratory reception featuring refreshments and an anniversary cake, prepared by the DCP Coordinating Committee—Marlene AndersonJoyce, Pam Cooper, Gloria McCormack, Diane Verster, and David Andersen. The social also featured a prize draw, with generous donations from a wide range of local Dunbar businesses and residents. Recognition is due to patroller Bill Jan, who has served as the event’s photographer for an impressive 14 consecutive years.
