As we enter mid-February, Steveston is alive with the warmth of community, even amid winter’s chill. From Family Day to Easter long weekend, this is a time of connection, reflection, and embracing the season’s charm.
Looking back, we are grateful for the good weather during the Winter in the Village events! The first annual tree lighting in front of the Steveston Tram Museum kicked off the festivities. Santa arrived by boat on December 8, followed by photos inside the Cannery. Oldfashioned horse-drawn carriage rides, always a crowd favourite, were made possible by the Steveston Merchants Association and Tourism Richmond. These rides also raised funds for the Richmond Christmas Fund. The dog photos with Santa and the festive dog parade were also a big hit. A special shoutout goes to Steveston’s merchants for their beautiful holiday window displays. Congratulations to Splash Toy Shop, this year’s grand prize winner, for their enchanting transformation of their window into an advent calendar.
This month’s cover features Scotty Olak, the proud owner of Little Mexico Cantina, a local gem that has become a staple in our community. Known for its mouthwatering tacos, sizzling fajitas, flavourful enchiladas, and irresistible churros, Little Mexico Cantina brings the authentic taste of Mexico to life.
Inside this issue, we dive into the LEGO® craze! Dub Dub Toys has become a destination for LEGO® enthusiasts, offering a unique retail experience for collectors and builders of all ages. Specializing in discontinued and rare sets, Dub Dub Toys is a must-visit shop for fans searching for something truly special.
We also welcome new businesses to the community: Dancing Florista, Elite Barbershop, Lust for Life Floral, Moncton Craft House, The Pottery, and Your CPAP Shop. At the same time, we say farewell to the 50s Burger Restaurant, Five Roads Brewing, and Berenice’s Braid, which recently closed their Steveston locations.
Exciting developments are on the horizon! The new Steveston Community Centre is coming along nicely, and plans are underway to relocate the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market.
Spring has almost sprung, and it's a wonderful time to browse Steveston's unique shops and savour a delicious meal at one of the village's many fantastic restaurants. Celebrate the season by supporting the amazing homegrown businesses that make our community so special.

LITTLE MEXICO CANTINA: A Mexican Getaway in Your Backyard
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier & submitted
We’ve reached the time of year when people dream of heading south to escape winter. Apart from the sun and sand, Little Mexico Cantina offers a year-round Mexican getaway in your backyard. Lively music sets the celebratory tone when you walk in the door of this little cantina known for its authentic cuisine and festive atmosphere.
Scotty Olak purchased the established Little Mexico Cantina in October 2020. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1988. Scotty had been actively searching for the right restaurant to own, and when he discovered that Little Mexico Cantina was for sale, he knew he had found the perfect fit.
“I love the location — it’s close to Garry Point Park, making it a perfect spot for a walk after your meal. Little Mexico Cantina is unique; it is the only Mexican restaurant in Richmond. Located a few blocks from the centre of Steveston Village, it’s a destination restaurant with plenty of free parking.”
“It’s a new chapter for Little Mexico Cantina.”
Scotty brings vast experience in restaurants and pubs from his native Scotland. The restaurant underwent renovations, including new flooring and a modernized kitchen. A new team of local staff was hired, and the menu was revamped.
The menu offers enduring favourites. Specials are introduced throughout the year to highlight seasonal ingredients.
Local products are utilized whenever possible, including fresh seafood from Steveston’s Fisherman’s Wharf and produce from local farms.
Little Mexico Cantina is known for its mouthwatering tacos, sizzling fajitas, flavourful enchiladas and irresitible churros. Almost everything is made in-house, including the tortilla chips and sauces. Gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian meals are available.
Customers rave about the mushroom tostada, which features roasted local mushrooms. Along with the chicken fajita, it is one of Scotty’s favourite entrees.
Swing by any day of the week between 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. to partake in happy hour. Enjoy wings and wine or tacos with your choice of wine or beer for under $10 during this time.
Taco Tuesday special! Tacos are $5 instead of the regular $8.
One customer remarked, “The margaritas are so good. They’ll have you feelin’ like you're chillin' on a beach in Cancun.”
The impressive drink menu includes feature and classic cocktails, beer on tap, bottled beer, wine, and mocktails. Scotty recommends the Puerto Vallarta, made with pineapple juice and spiced syrup and finished with coconut and almond foam.
Margaritas come in many flavours, including strawberry, lime and the Tulum, a fusion of jalapeno with Hornitos Tequila, Triple Sec, pineapple, spiced syrup, cardamom bitters and almond-coconut foam.
Scotty and his staff know many customers by name. Some visit the bar, while others come in to dine weekly. Many patrons are locals, although there is an increase in tourists during the summer.
Patrons often visit Little Mexico Cantina to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, office and Christmas parties. Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo are especially popular days.
Scotty mentions that weddings have taken place at the restaurant. Both the patio and the restaurant can be rented for private events. The patio is a draw during the spring and summer. With seating for 30 people, it’s a great spot to dine outdoors. Canada Day on the patio is a prime spot to watch the Salmon Festival parade set off.
Little Mexico Cantina recently introduced outside catering, which is becoming very popular. Meals can be prepared at the restaurant and delivered to your event; they also offer the option to cook on-site at home events.
Giving back to the community is Scotty’s way of saying thank you to his customers for their loyalty, especially for the support people offered during the challenging pandemic months.
Hosted by Little Mexico Cantina and Dinnell Real Estate, the Taco Eating Challenge has been held annually for the past four years. The challenge benefits Wigs for Kids B.C. This past summer, the event raised an impressive $64,652. Defending champ McLuchador held his title by devouring 32 tacos in under 30 minutes!
What does Scotty attribute the restaurant’s 37-year success to? He says, “Little Mexico is unique in the community. It’s a place where people come to celebrate and experience the authentic taste of Mexico.”

DUB DUB TOYS:
The Enduring Popularity of LEGO®
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos submitted
Dub Dub Toys is a relative newcomer to Steveston Village; storeowner Willam Wong opened his Chatham Street shop in November 2023. This specialty shop has attracted a following for its LEGO® sets, individual minifigures and licensed LEGO® products.
William’s interest in LEGO® dates back to his youth. He recalls having a small tub of LEGO® pieces and with those limited resources, he could build almost anything he imagined. As he grew older, William’s attention shifted to video games; however, in 2014, his passion reignited when he watched The LEGO® Movie.
William says, “Since then, I’ve been collecting LEGO® rather than building it. Then life’s priorities took over, like getting married and having kids, but I continued buying LEGO® with the dream of one day having a dedicated LEGO® room to share with my children.”
Eventually, William’s collection grew so large that he needed a website to track it. His garage was stuffed, and this is when he decided he needed a storefront.
William had always dreamed of owning
a business. He says, “I grew up in a family where my father was a businessman in Hong Kong. I also worked as a student accountant, where I gained valuable insights into business finances. Before considering opening Dub Dub Toys, I thought about starting a tutoring school since I had been a tutor for many years. However, with my growing collection, pursuing something I was passionate about that could also benefit others felt right.”
“I’ve shifted from wanting to build LEGO® sets to enjoying the process of collecting and imagining how the sets would look once built.”
The Richmond Chamber of Commerce awarded Dub Dub
Toys New Business of the Year.
What is the story behind the business’s name?
William explains, “My initials are WW, and when you say them quickly, it sounds like dub dub. I wanted the business name to feel young and exciting.”
Dub Dub Toys specializes in acquiring discontinued LEGO® sets, making it the only store in Vancouver focused on this niche. The store’s inventory features a wide range of retired sets, including limited-edition promotional items unavailable for public purchase.
“I want Dub Dub Toys to be a place that brings joy to every visitor.”
Customers range from children to seniors. Many live in Steveston, while others travel from across the Lower Mainland, including the islands and further north, to visit this unique store.
William finds it gratifying to connect with his customers and hear how much they enjoy their sets.
“I love seeing photos of their creations and engaging in conversations. Over time many customers have revealed how building with LEGO® has played a vital role in their lives, whether as a source of joy, creativity or even therapy.”
“Each customer has a story. One memorable customer purchased two Indiana Jones sets for $1,000 because his mother had thrown away his sets during his childhood. He shared that playing with LEGO® inspired his creativity and led him to become a short film producer.”
Another customer uses LEGO® to fuel their imagination through stop-motion animation using minifigures.
More than half of Dub Dub Toys’ inventory consists of discontinued sets.
“I prioritize acquiring retired sets over current ones, as these items hold special appeal for LEGO® enthusiasts and collectors. By focusing on discontinued and rare sets, Dub Dub Toys has become a must-visit destination for fans and collectors looking for something truly special.”
Due to space limitations, approximately ninety percent of Dub Dub’s inventory consists of sealed sets. Sets are displayed sideways on shelves, like books in a library. William plans to add a larger display shelf for preowned LEGO®
Dub Dub Toys carries vintage sets from as far back as the 1970s, including the first LEGO® Castle (1978), the first Spiderman set (2003) and the first wave of Harry Potter sets (2001).
“Sets released in the 1990s to 2010s are the most sought-after. Those were the times before LEGO® became very popular, and many people missed the opportunity to buy them at retail prices when they were still available.”
Sellers usually contact William after they visit the store. Others discover his business through Facebook Marketplace and online listings. People will often stroll in seeking something specific. On the day I visited, someone was in search of The Office TV sitcom LEGO® set.
“One significant advantage Dub Dub Toys offers is our trade-in program. Customers can bring in old sets and exchange them for store credit, which they can use toward purchasing something new without paying
extra. This program provides added value for my customers and allows me to acquire retired sets at a healthy profit margin.”
“LEGO®’s popularity lies in its timeless designs and unmatched quality. Every brick, from the very first piece to the most recent one, is compatible, ensuring that the sets you buy today will fit seamlessly with future sets. This is something few toy companies can guarantee. The bricks are durable and are designed to last. They provide endless creative possibilities. Whether you follow instructions or build freely, there’s no wrong way to play with LEGO®. LEGO® is a toy that transcends time; it sparks imaginations and brings joy to people of all ages.”
