This issue’s Ask An Expert section is full of helpful tips from Dermapure, Dunmed Medical Clinic, West Side Paint & Decorating, Goldstop Shoes & Repair, Dunbar Pizza & Indian Food, Golden Rug, 30 Minute Hit, and Life Integrative. This might be our biggest Ask An Expert section yet! Let us know what questions you’d like to ask any business in Dunbar and we will share their answers in a future edition.

Welcome to the autumn issue of Dunbar Life! It’s a busy time as many of us switch gears from relaxation mode to heading back to our routines of work and school after a beautiful summer.

On the cover is Ken Charko, owner of the Dunbar Theatre. His passion for films and this community drives him to continue operating this well-loved 87-year-old neighbourhood anchor. Ken and the Dunbar Theatre were recognized by the Motion Picture Association for resilience, creativity, and leadership in keeping the theatre operating throughout the pandemic. Congratulations! The Dunbar Theatre was the only theatre in North America that remained open!

We’re also excited to profile a new Dunbar business. Jar Bar Refillery recently opened at 4335 Dunbar Street. This environmentally friendly and very timely business provides alternatives to wasteful packaging by offering soap refills and other eco-friendly products to help reduce plastic pollution.

We were very sorry to see Kerrisdale Equipment close its storefront In Dunbar but they are still operating from 820 SW Marine Drive. Rummage Community Thrift has temporarily closed but can be found at 2169 W. 4th Avenue until they find a new Dunbar location. Angela T&Q Nail and Spa has opened at 3383 Dunbar Street. The UPS Store at 3271 Dunbar Street and Papa John’s Pizza at 5636 Dunbar Street will be opening soon. We also welcome MLA Kevin Falcon to his new office at 5640 Dunbar Street.

We are looking forward to bringing back the DVBA’s most popular community event this fall! Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village will take place this year on October 29th. This family-friendly, non-frightening event will be held from 3pm5pm and we look forward to seeing the community children in their costumes trick-ortreating at Dunbar businesses. Until then, please enjoy the change of seasons. Autumn has a way of making everything feel just a little bit cozier as leaves change colour, temperatures gradually drop, and pumpkins pop up and launch us into two major autumnal celebrations.

We thank you for keeping the Dunbar spirit alive as you continue to support your local businesses—and each other.

DUNBAR THEATRE

Vancouver’s Iconic Movie Theatre

There has never been a question that Dunbar is a very special community, which is confirmed by the neighbourhood’s support of Dunbar Theatre. On the landscape of full-time independent movie houses, the theatre is a sole survivor; it is the last of its kind in the city of Vancouver.

Dunbar Theatre was built in 1935 by J. Howard Boothe; he ran it until 1941 when Odeon bought the theatre and made it part of a nationwide chain. It closed between 1987-1988 and then was taken over by Famous Players for approximately ten years. Once again, it closed, and this time it seemed destined to be demolished; however, the community adamantly rejected plans for redevelopment.

In February 1998, three university students, including entrepreneur Ken Charko, the present-day owner of Dunbar Theatre, approached the property owner and requested permission to operate the theatre as a summer project. Soon after, Ken leased the building and brought Hollywood magic back to Dunbar as the theatre’s new independent owner. Eight

years later, he also became the operator of Varsity Theatre on West 10th Avenue, which closed in 2006 due to redevelopment.

Neighbourhood theatres are in a high-risk category – they are costly to run, leases can be expensive, buildings are located in prime locations where real estate is sought-after and independent theatres are in competition with multiplex cinemas and streaming services. But

8 www.DunbarLife.com September 1 - November 15, 2022

this is a happy story, a success story, and the Dunbar, as the theatre is fondly referred to, has stood the test of time.

Over the last 87 years, many memories have been made at the Dunbar.

From first kisses to first dates to the first time you brought your kids to your childhood stomping ground, there is a feeling of history in the air from this building that opened during the Great Depression. If walls could talk, they would have as many tales to tell as the stories on the big screen.

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced entirely new challenges, but Ken responded creatively. To his credit, he says the theatre didn’t close, not even for a day, something he says no other theatre in North America managed to achieve. As a result, Ken and the Dunbar Theatre were recognized by the Motion Picture Association for resilience, creativity, and leadership. Way to go, Dunbar Theatre!

People kept coming during the height of COVID. The Dunbar held socially distanced private screenings for families and small groups. People came from across the Lower Mainland to support their beloved movie theatre.

Ken says, “The safety of our customers and staff was our number one priority. We followed provincial guidelines and sold out our available seating daily. We also found other uses for the theatre, such as holding weddings for up to 30 people.”

Another draw was the Dunbar’s legendary buttery popcorn, which happens to be a secret recipe. Ken reveals, “We use real butter. I’m probably the biggest butter buyer in Vancouver. It’s all part of the experience of attending a movie.”

People drop by to purchase the best popcorn in town and to support the business. Some customers arrange for concession food to be delivered through

Skip the Dishes, Uber Eats and Door Dash. As well, sports teams and corporate groups purchase bulk popcorn for their fundraising events.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts are a fairly recent addition to the concession; they are sold on weekends. With a laugh, Ken says, “It’s a specific treat that is not available in Vancouver. The only reason we might not continue selling them is because I have gained six pounds and so have some of my staff!”

The 350-seat theatre rotates first-run films that generally show for two weeks. Ken opts primarily for family-friendly movies, reflective of this community’s movie-going audience.

9 www.DunbarLife.com September 1 - November 15, 2022
Some of the things people love about the iconic theatre include its incredibly comfy and roomy seats, ample leg room, and the charming old-fashioned balcony.

Moviegoers also appreciate the Dunbar’s friendly staff; some have been with the theatre for 20 years. Ken says, “I’m lucky because we have good staff retention. I’m really proud of my ‘kids.’ They are thankful we stayed open. They didn’t want to stop working, and we are better off for having done it.”

Are you aware it is possible to hold a private birthday party, or corporate or customer appreciation events at the Dunbar? A full-screen experience blows even the best home media room experience out of the water.

If you are a new mother craving a romantic comedy or drama, Movies for Mommies is designed for you. This program was put on hold during the pandemic but recently resumed.

To save money while catching a great flick, round up your family and friends for Cheap Tuesday. All seats are a mere $9.50. This fall a discount will be introduced on Wednesday nights for people aged 50+.

The festival kicks off with films from Greece (September 30 to October 2), followed by the Philippines (October 3 to 5) and Ukraine (October 6).

Ken is a councillor candidate in the October 15 Vancouver civic election; he intends to be a voice for small businesses. He says, “They need support so they can survive. I believe theatres and mom and pop shops are important parts of the community.”

For Ken, the theatre is a labour of love. It is his passion for films and for this community that drives him to keep operating it. He is devoted to the neighbourhood and is committed to giving back. He says, “We are a large donor to Canuck Place, and we have donated to almost every organization and event in Dunbar.”

Ken concludes, “Being the owner of Dunbar Theatre defines who I am. I’ve got the greatest job.”

How do I look after my Persian rug?

A genuine handknotted Oriental rug will last for several generations if you look after it and protect it from premature wear and damage from water, moths, pets, vacuum cleaners, chemicals, sun, and uneven wear.

Should you experience water damage, the rug must be removed quickly, properly cleaned, and allowed to dry completely. Most rug dyes are quite resistant to sun fading or bleaching. Still, ultraviolet rays are a powerful force of nature, and a rug will likely fade over time if used for years in a very sunny area. A rug should be turned end-forend once every year or two to even out wear and colour change.

Although many kinds of damage can be repaired, prevention is much easier and more cost effective. Inspect the entire rug periodically for signs of wear or damage. Have your rug cleaned only when it really is dirty. When you see something wrong with your rug that is beyond your ability to rectify, don’t hesitate to call us. With just a bit of care your Oriental rug will provide many years of enjoyment, lots of compliments and pride of ownership.

Are you troubled by facial hyperpigmentation?

As a 30+ year veteran dermatologist, I see patients with facial hyperpigmentation that is persistent, complex and troublesome where basic remedies have not worked. At Dermapure, we continue to explore science-based solutions for our patients.

Non-prescription cysteamine cream or Cyspera, available recently as a 5%-7% cream, has been very promising, as we see good improvement in melasma patients along with a good tolerability profile even during summer months and for those with sensitive skin.

The addition of prescription oral Tranexamic acid has been transformative for stubborn melasma cases. More recently for those unable or unwilling to take oral medications, mesotherapy tranexamic acid performed as a monthly lesional treatment can be highly satisfying. Korean based studies, where this form of therapy has been used successfully for years, has been helpful in informing us.

Make an appointment with us to get an appropriate diagnoses so we can provide alternative treatment options that will suit your individual needs. Dermapure is invested in the science of beautiful skin!

JAR BAR REFILLERY

Solutions to Protect the Planet

When we put out our blue boxes each week, we feel proactive; however, it is estimated that only five to ten percent of plastic worldwide is recycled. The health of our planet is desperately in need of tender loving care. This is where the Jar Bar Refillery steps in. The new Dunbar Street business provides alternatives to wasteful packaging by offering soap refills and other ecofriendly products to help reduce plastic pollution.

Tamara Komuniecki owns Jar Bar Refillery. In 2010, she launched her initial business, Delish General Store (DGS). Four years later, the business moved from her home in North Vancouver to Granville Island. In 2018, DGS moved back to North Vancouver’s Edgemont Village. Two years ago, Tamara expanded the store to include the Jar Bar Refillery, and opened the Dunbar location in June 2022.

Before being a business owner, Tamara had a

long and varied career as a broadcast and print journalist, editor, producer and communications specialist. While she loved her work, she stepped away from it when her son was born.

Tamara explains, “Being an entrepreneur has always been in my blood — I come from a line of general store owners, and this always felt right to me.”

When thinking about growing her business, she considered what other communities would support a Jar Bar Refillery, and Dunbar fit the bill.

18 www.DunbarLife.com September 1 - November 15, 2022
“I always felt compelled that people could and should do more to make changes in their lives that would positively impact the community and the planet’s health.”

“I created a list of neighbourhoods in the Lower Mainland that had the right mix of demographic and density, were not currently served by a soap refillery, and that had a population who would be interested in a sustainable lifestyle for the health of their family and the planet.”

“I wanted to be a part of figuring out some solutions I could help teach others. In a small way, that is what I am doing now.”

Tamara mentions, “When you think of how much plastic waste one household generates daily, it is gut-wrenching. I have this image of the pile of plastic my household produces that keeps growing and growing, and I will do whatever I can to slow down the growth of its size.”

“Will it make a huge difference in the biggest environmental issues we face today, like resource extraction, greenhouse gas emissions, loss of biodiversity? Maybe not. But I feel strongly that people need to feel like they are doing something that makes a difference, and if they start in one area of their life (plastic pollution), then that even small sense of empowerment may fuel action in bigger ways.”

Customers can bring in containers from home if they are clean and dry, or they can purchase new containers at the store. There are a variety of jars and bottles available with different tops like sprayers and pumps, in case someone needs that at home. Jar Bar Refillery carries mainly glass, some lovely ceramic ones and even HDPE plastic (BPA-free) for families who find a more breakable option unsuitable for their needs.

“We also carry many locally-produced natural brands with organic ingredients, and so some folks mistake comparing our products and prices to the more mainstream, mass-produced, filler-heavy, chemical-laden products, but really, that is a false equivalency.”

Tamara’s goal was to create a spa-like environment, and she has succeeded. Whitetiled walls, a green tiled feature wall behind the cash desk, and wooden floors create a calm and inviting space.

Jar Bar’s staff often hear how good the store smells; customers describe it as clean, fresh, and energizing.

19 www.DunbarLife.com September 1 - November 15, 2022

Soap refills are the store’s most popular products. Customers have been raving about the orange blossom rosemary scent from Port Moody-based brand Live for Tomorrow, as well as products from Ucluelet’s Mint Cleaning Co. Jar Bar Refillery also sells a lot of bath and body products from Carina Organics, headquartered in North Vancouver.

Other popular products include refills from Routine deodorant, shampoo and conditioner bars from Unwrapped Life, and dishwasher pods with a water-soluble corn plastic wrapper from The Unscented Company. Additional popular purchases include Swedish sponge cloths, bamboo dish brushes with replaceable heads, and other tools for a clean home.

Tamara is grateful for being so readily accepted by the community and neighbouring merchants. She says, “I haven’t heard this message in any of my other locations as much as I have here. We are getting thanked for opening such a business in this community. How amazing is that?”

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert:

When is the best time to begin preventative aesthetic medicine?

As the medical world progresses, we can see how cause and effect shows on the face. Now is the best time to start treatments and take care of your skin. Always use sunscreen. In your 20s you still have youthful elastic skin, so prolonging this elasticity and slowing down the aging process can begin then. We all age at different times and speeds. It is most important to recognize your own process.

Botox is the most popular and easiest to start with for preventing wrinkles. Once wrinkles form on the skin, it is harder to reverse. Botox is safe and works by relaxing facial muscles, thus preventing fine lines and wrinkles. If you are just starting your aesthetic journey, it may be too late to prevent, however, there are ways to reverse!

Fillers are used for hydrating the skin where elasticity and volume have been lost. Other treatments such as PDO threads and PRP can give the skin a more hydrated and voluminous appearance.

What can I expect at my first chiropractic visit?

An initial consultation is a 45-minute one-on-one session with our chiropractor, Dr. Zybutz, where he will go over your medical history and examine the area(s) of concern to determine what kind of treatment will be best suited for you for your recovery.

Wondering if the new patient consultation includes treatment? Dr. Zybutz tries his best to provide treatment and relief on the same day after he runs through the initial assessment. The treatment itself is not included in the new patient consultation. As each case varies, please note that it is not guaranteed that you will receive treatment on the same day as your initial assessment since it is dependent on his findings and his schedule that day.

Dr. Zybutz has over 20 years of experience. He uses a variety of techniques to bring the body and spine back into alignment, allowing the body to restore structure and support healing. Patients of any lifestyle can benefit from his expert care and knowledge, whether it is from chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, shockwave therapy, exercise and rehabilitation, or orthotic inserts.

When do I need to prime a wall before I paint?

Primers are designed to help cover the existing surface and to help create better adhesion. Benjamin Moore paints all have a self-priming element, so most previously painted, undamaged walls do not require a primer, especially when using our highest quality paint.

However, some instances where primers can be helpful are for:

1. When painting over a non-porous or glossy surface such as tile, metal, or panelling.

2. Colour changes, when going from dark to light, or vice versa.

3. To block stains such as smoke, water, or other odours.

4. When painting over porous surfaces like drywall or wood, to create uniformity when painting, and so the primer gets soaked up rather than the paint.

At West Side Paint & Decorating we are a proudly locally owned store, eager to help you with any other painting questions you may have.
