WELCOME

Los Angeles has emerged as a global epicenter of art & culture, with a distinct, interwoven multi-cultural influence unique to the city. Diversity is our strength and art is most impactful when it includes or transcends all borders. As LA rises as the world-class destination for art, the LA ART SHOW continues to lead the way with innovative programming and one-of-a-kind experiences for an expanding collecting audience. To celebrate our diversity as a city and a fair, we’re engaging and working with local and international museum curators and galleries to develop innovative programming, engaging dialogs and cutting-edge exhibitions with an ecumenical resonance. Building on last year’s excitement, DIVERSEartLA dedicates over 60,000 square feet in the LA ART SHOW to performance art, installations, exhibits and programs curated by major museums and arts organizations such as LACMA, MOLAA, THE AUTRY and MUSA MUSEUM OF THE ARTS GUADALAJARA. The DIVERSEartLA section is devoted to nurturing the creative energy of collectors, artists, curators and institutions by providing a contemporary art platform that helps to empower, connect and engage LA’s dynamic community and diverse audiences with the world. More than 200,000 square feet of booth space is committed to today’s prominent galleries. These domestic and international galleries, beyond their booths, curate special exhibits that are at the forefront of the burgeoning contemporary art movement. The fair offers an extraordinary array of works in specialized sections - Roots, Core, Littletopia, Works on Paper, Project Space, Jewel and new to the show in 2018, Design LA Art. Dialogs LA returns in 2018 with a slate of talks and panel discussions led by international curators, esteemed panels comprised of artists, designers, collectors, art influencers and museum directors. The compelling combination of galleries, exhibits, dialogs and programming creates the perfect cultural event for seasoned collectors and new collectors alike as more than 70,000 people descend on the LA ART SHOW to consume art! The LA Convention Center is home to the fair, offering an expansive 260,000 square feet of exhibition space, the only venue that can accommodate an international fair of this caliber. The LA ART SHOW is the unparalleled international art experience with over 100 galleries from 18 countries exhibiting painting, sculpture, works on paper, installation, photography, design, video and performance. All works presented by galleries are available for your purchasing pleasure.

MAGIC SPACEBOAT By Bunnie Reiss

Bunnie ‘Bonnie’ Reiss was born in Maryland, but raised mostly with the wide-blue skies of Colorado. Having come from a large Polish/Russian family, eating, loud talking and community shaped her life. She was a tiny rebel with a large imagination, knowing at a young age that she quite didn’t fit in and the world was a much bigger place than the quiet suburban landscape that seemed to endlessly surround her.

THE ROOTS OF FORM by

Born

South

Korea,

Jae-Hyo

L e e , J a e -H y o

gained

acclaim

for

his intimately

crafted

oeuvre. Combining traces of Land Art, Arte Povera and Minimalism, he uses materials from nature to cast a questioning eye over the roots of form.

Lee’s work reveals the beauty in what is usually seen but not noticed as well as its function and role within the natural world.

Lee´s works willfully play with the oft-contested boundaries between modern art and design, referencing the idealist´s cubes, cylinders and cones as perversions of the chaise lounge, the coffee table, the lampshade, and even the humble doughnut. Revealing a subtly humorous and unsentimental attitude to nature, what unites these works is a belief that the beauty of art is a product of the labor from whence it comes, whether this be the meticulous carving of larch trunks into the form of a perfect sphere or, equally, the precise bending and sanding of thousands of nails hammered one after another into a hunk of cut lumber.

METAPHYSICAL OROZCO

MUSA, Museum of the Arts of the University of Guadalajara —México— presents Metaphysical Orozco, showed for the first time ever in the United States.

This project is based on the work of José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) one of the most important Mexican artists during the first half of the 20 th century and a central figure in Mexican Muralism.

The images, projected by a multi-layer mapping, belong to the murals made by the artist between 1935 and 1937 at the auditorium known as Paraninfo, inside the building in which is located the Museum of the Arts.

During the post-revolutionary years, muralism, based on the creation of monumental pictorial works, conveyed ideas regarding national identity while also highlighting the principles that define human dignity and the transcendence of social struggles throughout the world.

The installation involves the public in an exploration of the fields of thought found within Orozco’s murals, as well as the history and themes that inspired them.

The projection of the master works will be accompanied by a musical soundtrack, giving visitors a comprehensive sensory experience that will be complemented by informative graphic material.

ESPECULAR (THRESHOLD) by

Leyla Cárdenas

The Colombian writer Manuel Hernández B. defines his nation’s capital, Bogotá, as a permanent threshold that announces the promise of a place that never arrives. Leyla Cárdenas’s Especular provides a real-world yet ghost-like image of this insight with her set of photographic prints of Bogota’s neoclassical train station façade. First built in the late 1880s—concurrent with the formation of the Republic of Colombia—the station is a once-hopeful symbol of the nation that then became a long abandoned modern ruin. Cárdenas represents the façade with two printed scrims suspended back-to-back from the ceiling, over twenty feet up, and running a similar distance along the floor. These discontinuous panels are cut to match the different track gauges used in Colombia that made a unified national transportation infrastructure impossible. Especular is part of a series in which the artist documents the architectural remnants of the urban fabric. Cárdenas reflects on these artworks as illustrating “History repeating itself: vicious circles and accumulation of thresholds that lead nowhere.”

IF YOU DRINK HEMLOCK, I SHALL DRINK IT WITH YOU OR A BEAUTIFUL DEATH; PLAYER TO PLAYER, PIMP TO PIMP. (AS PERFORMED BY THE INMATES OF THE ASYLUM OF CHARENTON UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE MARQUIS DE SADE) by

Daniel Joseph Martinez

Daniel Joseph Martinez’s immersive environment references Jacques-Louis David’s seminal portrait The Death of Marat (1793), painted and also reproduced shortly after Marat’s assassination during the French Revolution. Whereas David’s painting represents a single moment, both sanitized and accurate in its details, Martinez creates a mise en scène using three life-like sculptures modeled after the artist’s own body. These depict Marat in his bath as well as assassin Charlotte Corday and Martinez himself both standing behind Marat (each with a bloodied dagger in hand). Martinez stages Marat’s assassination as a public spectacle surrounded by bleachers, although viewers can also immerse themselves within the scene, no doubt taking selfies. In this way, Martinez connects David’s painting with our present moment, giving a historical dimension for modern politics as a form of theater, sport, and business. But Martinez pushes even further. The Death of Marat quickly became iconic of the French Revolution, not because it depicted a public spectacle, but rather because it circulated a political image that focused attention on the personal and private. Once that happened, politics-as-spectacle was no longer dependent on public space—it was in our minds.

APORÍAS MÓVILES by

Nuna Mangiante

Aporías Móviles is an installation that features photographic portraits of individuals whose faces have been expunged by a solid coat of graphite scratched on in layers. The altered portraits are displayed alongside small drawings which can only be seen from specific angles and various construction and building materials. The juxtaposition of these elements speaks to how we dismiss individuals affected by gentrification or urban renovation, where marginalized groups are often geographically displaced resulting in a global phenomenon of increasing class segregation. By erasing the face—a person’s most distinguishable physical attribute—Mangiante points out how society ignores the rights of those who bear the brunt of the economic violence perpetuated by overdevelopment. Mangiante chooses to work with rudimentary materials and methods, which she describes as simple but forceful in meaning.

The work of renown Pueblo/Cochiti artist Mateo Romero explores the intersection between figurative painting, Native imagery and art historical myths, and the role of self-representation in a post-colonial art world. In a performance that combines cultural commentary and a dynamic working method, Romero will create a live, immersive mural painting destined for the collection of the Autry Museum of the American West.

NOMAD SCULPTURES by

Angel Ricardo Ricardo Rios

The thesis of the Nomad Sculpture’s project is to insist that each object is a model of one’s thoughts – a visual representation of thought modeling. The scale of the objects is used as a necessary seduction to catch the attention of the urban and busy viewer, to turn his attention to the arts and nature surrounding him. Each object is around 26 ft. high, and their inflatable nature gives them easy transportation; for that reason it is possible to change locations and play with their presence in different public spaces.

The sculptures become desired objects to the viewers, full of life and sexual forms. The artist, with his playful nature, designed these exotic plants after working a long time on sketches based on seeds brought from Cuba and mixed them with his magical and symbolic imagination. He manipulated reality, creating and cultivating them with plastic material and feeding them by air compressors as independent hearts.

The full project has six monolithic pieces that resemble columns and fruits on small trees in pots. They are versions of some kind of fable told by Ettore Sottsass or Aldo Rosi, or Oldenbur, or found in children’s toy shops.

Angel Ricardo Ricardo Rios was born in Holguin, Cuba, but currently lives in Mexico. He has studied the Arts at The Superior Institute of Art, Havana, Cuba, and also at the National Art School of San Alejandro, Havana, Cuba. Ricardo Rios has had very important solo exhibitions as well as participated in important Art Fairs. He is represented in important Art Galleries in Spain, Mexico, Havana, Miami, Turkey, Colombia, Venezuela, and others.

This interactive installation depicting different world leaders and tyrants will allow the spectator, thru the punching of the bags, to release anger, hatred, resentment. This release of negative emotions will transform these objects into tools of detoxification and mental healing. Current global politics has created an environment of disrespect for humanity and our planet, lack of harmony, senseless wars, violence, racism, ignorance, loss of values and principles, lack of consciousness, super egos and demagoguery, corruption, disrespect of women, false promises, and outright lies. SYNESTHESIA: What

is the

Taste

of

Color Blue?

Building Bridges Art Exchange, the International Association of Synaesthetes, Artists, and Scientists and UCLA Art|Sci are collaborating together to present SYNESTHESIA: WHAT IS THE TASTE OF COLOR BLUE? Curated by Marisa Caichiolo, Synesthesia is an inherited trait, like red hair or brown eyes, and is found in less than 3.75 percent of the world’s population. It is defined as a cross firing of any one of the five senses in which one sensory experience triggers additional sensory experiences in one or more of the other four senses. Synesthesia does not replace one sensory mode with another; it adds perceptions from another sensory modality to the initial “normal” perceptions. There are at least 60 different forms of synesthesia.

Plantigrade, an experiential installation by Marcos Lutyens | The installation presents patrons with a psycho-synthetic terrain; they are invited to walk across barefoot, paying special attention to the sensations of color and texture coming through their feet. This is a sensibility developed by surrealist writer René Daumal, called paroptic vision, and by extension para-tactile sensing. The project has been enhanced with the collaboration of celebrated author and neurologist Richard E. Cytowic.

Space Palette by Tim Thompson & Paul Sable | The Space Palette is a musical and graphical instrument invented by Tim Thompson that lets you play music and paint visuals simultaneously by waving your hands in the holes of a wood frame. No prerecorded media, sequences, or loops are used - everything is generated in realtime by your hands.

LIU YILIN Liu was born in Fengyang County, Anhui Province, China, 1955. He is a poet and writer first. Liu entered the realm of arts by chance, and in an explosive manner. He had never received any professional training, but his creations range from pen drawing, sculpture, oil painting, architecture, weaving, Chinese painting, and calligraphy, almost every single aspect. His works came from his inheritance and comprehension of Chinese classical culture. The lines are flowing freely without a stop, the colors are rich yet not chaotic, all of which are pleasant and comfortable. In the eyes of Liu, the fundamental reason why he is able to create so many artworks is because he knows how to “let go” - letting go of greed, anger and wishful thinking, and returning to peace and serenity so that he can experience the rules of the world and nature.

THE “ESSENTIALIST” FINE ARTS IN THE EAST LIU YILIN I was on the other side of fine arts. For me, I met myself as I encountered the fine arts. There was a force overlooking and I was the chosen one, as an ordinary person. Objectively speaking, I serve as some kind of energy channel. It is not about creating, but demonstrating and releasing. Normally speaking, artists should be skilled in some aspects instead of knowing something in all aspects. For any accomplished master, you have to “sit on a cold bench for ten years (which means you have to be persistent before you succeed).” However, there was an opening on the wall of common knowledge, and something else showed up: It’s not about learning before succeeding now, and everything is simply so spacious, profound, natural and less artificial.

DANSAEKHWA IV: INTERNAL RHYTHM B y K i m T a e H o

Characterized by his brush strokes and panorama of colors painted in thick layers, first, he drew a line on a canvas. And then, with even breath and order, he applied paints with brush strokes on it, which accumulated into a pile of paint layers. Usually, when he cuts through the surface of the layers of 20 or more colors with a palette knife, the colors hidden underneath come alive, and they carry both the internal rhythm and the external composition.

DIRECTORS CHAIR By Matthew Modine

On the 30th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, Matthew Modine’s “Full Metal Diary” offers an incredibly rare and vibrant portrait of one of cinema’s most iconic war films - by one of the industry’s most enigmatic directors. The exhibition is a study of a young actor under the apprenticeship of a legend. A combination of rarely seen, medium-format photographs taken on set are displayed alongside poetic, intimate excerpts from the actor’s personal diary. This glance behind-the-curtain reveals unique insights into Kubrick’s methodology as well as the complicated process of an actor struggling to come to terms with his craft. “Full Metal Diary” is an extraordinary example of art imitating life.

character constructed from symbols and archetypes. Pandemonia is literally a walking advertisement of herself as well as her paintings, photographs & sculptures.

The character, Pandemonia is a vessel for the artist to travel through society, absorbed by the media complex, appearing in print magazines, films, social media and major product advertisements, enabling her to reach and effect public consciousness as both a myth & a brand.

By means of improvisation, Pandemonia will pose and perform in a booth using various art objects & props from her perfect surreal-ideal world that echo her Pop Feminist vocabulary. She will naturally interact with the public and gallery display booths throughout the fair… always making herself available for conversation, interviews and that perfect Polaroid “Photo-Op.”

Artist Matt Elson presents a series of boxes that allow intimate groups of people to interact via elaborately constructed infinity mirrors set up inside. Aesthetically they are objects that draw the viewer in from a distance with the box’s odd beauty and become progressively less comprehensible during interaction.

Typically two people will walk up, look in from each side, put their heads in the box, and then are surprised by the world that opens up inside. The works truly become active only when someone else is looking in the box from the other direction creating a social connection in a perceptually-created other world.

SONGS AND POEMS II by

Erika Harrsch

Harrsch’s work, thematically aligned with the butterfly, shares content based on migration and the surrounding circumstances that define identity, nationality and global mobility. Departing from these projects, she has further elaborated on the complexity of the migratory experience, to approach immigration reforms and the recontextualization of the physical borders.

Erika creates wall installations with cut-out butterflies incorporating images of international currency.

The circular patterns and waves created by currency butterflies and drawings represent the countries from which people are moving, reflecting on how these mass influxes shape economic markets.

After hearing Philip Glass’s metamorphosis in a concert, Harrsch got inspired and was commissioned to illustrate the CD of this great composer.

Through the Looking Glass was birthed from the notion of introspective cultural perception. It questions the viewer’s engagement with cultures not recognized as his or her own, as well as the educational conduits that are relied upon regarding said cultures, and finally, it questions the viewer’s responsibility to pursue these inquiries. Created in the spirit of a social experiment, Through the Looking Glass aims for the audience to engage in a deeply internal conversation, allowing themselves to seek new cultural experiences from a completely fresh and open perspective.

YARE: ONE MORE DANCE By Cristobal Valecillos

Yare, One More Dance is a contemporary multi-disciplinary representation of Los diablos de Yare - declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

To celebrate the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative, the artist invokes the annual Los Diablos de Yare festival by sculpting a collection of handcrafted masks. Valecillos also created a series of stunning photographs set against a backdrop of iconic Los Angeles landmarks. These provocative and compelling images incorporate the joys and challenges of the contemporary human spirit.

The Dogma that enables our darkest times, the Propaganda that seduces us into complicity, the Basura that feeds us, the Matasano to whom we trust our greatest love, the Solo our technological refuge, El Dulce, leader of the gang that ridicules our thirst, the Asfixia we are inflicting upon Mother Earth and the Sangre that we so irresponsibly shed.

The viewers will have the opportunity to view these unique masks and photographs and experience a spectacular performance of the traditional Los Diablos de Yare ceremony on the Opening Night Premiere Party while they dance through the isles of the LA Art Show.
