THE 29TH ANNUAL LA ART SHOW

THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW IN AMERICA

Los Angeles has emerged as a global epicenter of art & culture, with a distinct, interwoven multi-cultural influence unique to the city. Diversity is our strength and art is most impactful when it includes or transcends all borders. As LA rises as the world-class destination for art, the LA Art Show continues to lead the way with innovative programming and oneof-a-kind experiences for an expanding collecting audience.

The LA Art Show is an unparalleled international art experience with over 100 galleries, museums, and non-profit organizations from around the world exhibiting painting, sculpture, works on paper, installation, photography, design, video and performance. All works presented by galleries are available for your purchasing pleasure.

More than 180,000 square feet of exhibition space is committed to today’s prominent galleries. These domestic and international galleries, beyond their booths, curate special exhibits that are at the forefront of the burgeoning contemporary art movement. The fair offers an extraordinary array of works and experiences in specialized sections.

PALM BEACH SHOW GROUP

Dear Friends,

Whether you are a seasoned collector or merely an admirer of the arts, we are certain that the LA Art Show will provide you with a special experience in the world of Modern and Contemporary Art. We have created the most diverse art show in the world.

We strive towards making the LA Art Show a premier international arts destination, in the likes of Art Basel, Frieze, and The Armory Show.

Art has always been at the forefront of society, bravely going where others feared to tread, whether it was the use of color, texture, composition, or materials, artists have always pushed the envelope.

It takes a discerning eye and measure of courage to embrace and appreciate the new and the different and today’s collectors are a brave and appreciative crowd.

A show of this magnitude requires coordinated efforts from a myriad of people, and I wish to thank my entire team, especially Kassandra Voyagis, whose dedication and hard work made this show possible. I am grateful to all our new participants and to the many great galleries that return each year and travel here so that we may enjoy their spectacular works of art.

The LA Art Show is proud to serve as a vehicle for today’s galleries to showcase their artists. Our guests are provided the opportunity to enjoy a unique assortment of creative expression from all corners of the globe.

I am proud to welcome you to the 29th edition of the LA Art Show and to celebrate the fertile efforts of the human mind.

Enjoy the Show!

Welcome to LA Art Show 2024!

For our 29th edition, we return once again supported by some of our long-time exhibitors while welcoming many more who are new to our show.

As we begin a new year, I am very excited to share news of our expanded modern and contemporary franchise, Fine Art Shows, which now includes our sister show, Art Palm Beach, in Florida. After our debut last year, we had another successful edition this January in West Palm Beach, and I congratulate our dedicated LA Art Show team who worked so passionately to produce a second edition that created tremendous media buzz and wowed the art community. I was quite thrilled at the show’s growth since we started, and how well our exhibitors did in terms of art sales.

Now, just weeks later, we have produced yet another sterling edition of the LA Art Show without missing a beat. It was a grueling schedule and I would like to thank every member of our team who helped to make this possible, especially key members Marisa Caichiolo, Katrina Fernandez, and Wuang-Ee Blum.

At the same time, words cannot adequately express my heartfelt appreciation for the support of all the exhibitors in the show, many having to make tremendous financial and personal sacrifices to participate. Yet, we have all come together with a common spirit as we welcome more than 100 exhibiting galleries and museums from North and South America, Asia and Europe.

Our show has always been about community and inclusivity, and we strive to be a force for all that is progressive and positive. As the most comprehensive art fair on the West Coast, we have always presented one of the most diverse and engaging programs in the world.

In my evolving role as Director and Producer of Fine Art Shows, I anticipate endless possibilities for growth. The future is truly bright as we continue to explore new opportunities and new markets, with more to offer our local and international exhibitors. That said, I take nothing for granted. I remain grateful to our team, working tirelessly and graciously under pressure. Their optimism for what is possible, and their faith in my leadership, continue to be an inspiration. I am happy to share the culmination of our collective hard work.

Enjoy the show!

About the American Heart Association:

The American Heart Association is a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. We are dedicated to ensuring equitable health in all communities.

Founded in 1924 by six cardiologists, our organization is grounded in the belief that scientific research leads the way to better treatment, prevention and – ultimately – a cure for these leading causes of death and disability. The AHA is proud to be the leading nonprofit funding cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease research. Bold investments have led to significant medical advancements including the first artificial heart valve, implantable pacemakers, cholesterol lowering medications and techniques for CPR.

For 100 years, the American Heart Association (AHA) has saved and improved lives, pioneered scientific discovery, and advocated for healthy public policies in communities across the country. These bold moves have helped transform our nation’s health and significantly reduce heart disease and stroke death rates. However, those gains have not been shared equitably. Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian and LGBTQ people have suffered and died disproportionately. So have people in underresourced communities all over the country. These longtime disparities were magnified, and even worsened, by the COVID-19 pandemic. With overall death rates actually rising in recent years, we face a global health crisis that threatens us all. But the American Heart Association stands ready. Success over a century has prepared us for this moment.

And the American Heart Association is just getting started. The Centennial Celebration is harnessing our historic success to fuel our relentless pursuit of equitable health for all into the AHA Second Century. Through collaboration with numerous organizations, and powered by millions of volunteers, we fund innovative research, advocate for the public’s health and share lifesaving resources.

Daphne Alazraki | Daphne Alazraki Fine Art New York City, NY and La Jolla, CA

A highly esteemed private art dealer, Daphne Alazraki grew up in La Jolla, CA, and attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. After graduation, Daphne pursued her interest in Art Law, completed a series of Senate internships in Washington D.C., and worked as a paralegal at a Wall Street law firm in New York City.

Opting for a change, Daphne took a job working in the PR and Special Events division at Christie’s. The role offered her broad exposure to all of the internal departments of the auction house. The opportunity to work alongside a business partner specializing in Dutch and Flemish Old Master paintings led to another career shift and a move abroad. In the early 1990s, Daphne and her partner based themselves in Paris and Düsseldorf and exhibited paintings at more than a dozen prestigious annual art fairs.

The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, in the Netherlands, eventually offered her a booth at the prestigious show in 1994, ultimately leading Daphne to launch Daphne Alazraki Fine Art as a solo business venture. This extraordinary opportunity in the international art world opened the door to an “old boys” club. It quickly established her as a pioneer for women in the field of Old Master European paintings. In early 2000, she returned to New York City with a focus on 17th Century Northern Old Masters.

A decade later, Daphne Alazraki Fine Art shifted its emphasis to specialize in 19th-century Impressionist art and later more Abstract and Contemporary art. Her business continues to evolve with the

changing times and tastes. At this year’s LA Art Show, she will feature Abstract Expressionist and Contemporary pieces while still showing some works of the French Impressionist era.

Alazraki seeks to acquire exceptional paintings and works on paper for established and new clients. She offers advisory services, including artwork evaluation, appraisal, conservation, and framing. Daphne Alazraki Fine Art remains based in Midtown Manhattan, and Daphne also maintains an office from her home in La Jolla, California.

In this Gallerist Talk, Daphne will discuss what appeals to her about working in the secondary art market, what draws her to the artworks she chooses to represent, her thoughts on why she believes collectors choose different periods of artwork, and what she believes collectors will focus on next.

Cynthia Valianti Corbett | Cynthia Corbett Gallery London, United Kingdom

Cynthia Corbett Gallery, a London-based Contemporary art gallery, was established by American former economist, art historian, and curator Cynthia Valianti Corbett in 2004. This international nomadic art gallery represents emerging and established contemporary artists. They also provide a broad annual exhibition program that includes international art fairs and collaborative projects worldwide. Gallery-represented and guest artists from British, American, and international backgrounds have had their work acquired by major museums, institutions, and private collections.

In 2009, Cynthia Valianti Corbett proudly launched the Young Masters Art Prize, a unique, not-for-profit curatorial platform supporting emerging international artists. The Prize celebrates artistic skill and innovation with awareness of the Old Masters and art of the past. The work is reviewed, and the winners are selected by an independent judging panel of renowned art historians, collectors, curators, and art professionals. Three years later, the gallery launched an inaugural Young Masters Emerging Women Award. Following that, the fifth edition and 10th Anniversary Exhibition of the Prize were held In 2021, the Focus on the Female curatorial platform was developed as an artistic and philanthropic antidote to the disproportionate impact of the COVID pandemic on women. The 6th edition of the Young Masters Art Prize successfully coincided with the 2023 Frieze London art fair held in Marylebone, London. In 2020, Cynthia was the recipient of the 2020 Tufts University Alumni Award with a Career Service Citation in recognition of her achievements and contribution to the international art world.

This Gallerist Talk will focus on Cynthia’s exciting and varied career and path, which includes working at Citi as an international economist specializing in emerging markets and based in New York and London.

Cynthia Corbett Gallery artist and artwork images, including Klari Reis and Nicole Etienne, courtesy of Cynthia Corbett Gallery (CCG).

The discussion will include insights into how her experience around the world has influenced her work in the fine art world, and how she selects the artists she represents.

Joining the conversation will be two distinguished artists:

Klari Reis is renowned for her discerning integration of scientific tools and methodologies into the fabric of her artistic endeavors. Unceasingly committed to exploration, Reis adeptly maneuvers through a panorama of inventive techniques, perpetually unveiling novel applications of materials. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a profound inclination to scrutinize the organic and the surreal, her artistic expression is imbued with an ineffable sense of wonder and joy.

American-born and Henley-upon-Thames-based artist Nicole Etienne, whose mixed media compositions explode with vibrancy and sensuality. Blending painting and photography, Etienne captures romantic settings during her extensive travels, manipulating each image for a mystical entry point. Printed on glitter or natural canvas, her images transform with thickly layered paint, gold leaf, glitter, and Swarovski crystals. The result is a powerful blend of movement and opulence, inviting viewers into an intimate and unexpected moment within an extraordinary environment. Etienne’s work graces public and private collections worldwide, showcasing her skill and beauty. With an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BFA from the University of California Santa Cruz, she has held solo exhibitions in global art hubs like New York, Aspen, London, Dublin, Tokyo, and Saint Barthélemy. Nicole Etienne continues to captivate audiences with her exquisite creations.

LA

DIVERSEartLA is a special programming section devoted to nurturing the creative energy of international collectors, artists, curators, museums and non-profits by connecting them directly with audiences in Los Angeles. The LA Art Show donates 50,000 square feet of exhibition space to participating organizations each year as our civic engagement, and the featured work is not for sale. DIVERSEartLA is curated by Marisa Caichiolo with individual curators from institutions around the world.

Through a range of media and approaches, this DIVERSEartLA edition will encourage visitors to explore the complex and evolving relationship between memory, humanity, and AI.

Memory is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, shaping our individual and collective identities and informing our understanding of the world around us. As we enter an era of rapid technological change and increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI), it is important to consider the role that AI can play in shaping our memory and our sense of humanity.

Through installations, interactive experiences, and thought-provoking artworks, visitors will be challenged to consider the ways in which AI is changing our relationship to memory and shaping our understanding of what it means to be human. It is important to consider potential challenges and risks associated with AI and memory. Reliance on external memory systems could lead to decreased retention and reliance on inaccurate or biased information.

Additionally, concerns about data privacy, security, and the potential for manipulation of collective memory should be addressed as AI continues to evolve. From AI-generated artworks to immersive virtual reality experiences that challenge our sense of self, the works in this edition invite us to consider the opportunities and challenges presented by AI and memory.

What does it mean to remember in an age of digital memory? How can AI be used to enhance our memory and our understanding of the world? And what are the ethical and social implications of relying on AI as a tool for memory and identity?

DIVERSEartLA Museum Acquisition Award:

DIVERSEartLA 2024 is proud to announce the second edition of the Museum Acquisition Award for Emerging Artists in Los Angeles.

Inspired by Spain’s La Neomudéjar Museum last year, the initiative seeks to support the art scene by promoting the acquisition of art works by leading national and international museums. The winner of the award will be chosen by Ana Maria Mattei, Museum Director and Magazine Founder as well as Marisa Caichiolo, Curator of DIVERSEartLA.

The award will be presented by Matthei, Caichiolo and LA Art Show Director Kassandra Voyagis in a closing ceremony at the fair.

DIVERSEartLA is curated by Marisa Caichiolo.

MYTHSTORIES

Myths are constructed to express realities beyond logical understanding and to help us comprehend concepts that are difficult to explain with ordinary language. Carlos Castro’s work is situated precisely where contemporary society is confronted with a mirror but is hesitant to open its eyes. By employing the ancient medieval technique of tapestry and utilizing an iconography that connects the ancient and the contemporary, he intricately weaves a new understanding of our recent history within the context of a hyper-communicated, transcultural, hybrid, and meaning-hungry society. In the midst of complexity, it becomes necessary to turn to myth in order to approach our existence in a symbolic and cohesive manner, using a resource that enriches the imagination and emotion required to assimilate the succession of moments that will eventually become history.

Each Castro tapestry is a journey through time, not only through chronological time, but also through the transposition of characters, places, forms of representation, canons, and values. This creates a spiral that enables us to visually and conceptually navigate between a past-present, a future-past, and a continuous, indeterminate present, all seasoned with the ineffable irony necessary for digestion. His work is an invitation to create or recreate our own myths—the kind that allow us to transcend experience and redefine the culture and social significance that is implicit within it.”

THE JOURNEY

The Warriors are life-sized, laser-cut, wooden sculptures set in an environment that resembles a harsh desert landscape. Inspired by the 2,200-year-old Chinese Terracotta Warriors – 8,000 life-sized soldier statues excavated in Shaanxi province in 1974, Bert’s vision was to honor the warriors of our time by creating an army of immigrant heroes. The relationship between the individual and the collective group is apparent in the installation. Seen individually, the modern-day warriors are strong and proud, but when viewed together – and multiplied in the surrounding mirrors – they become an overwhelming and forceful army.

All the individuals depicted represent real people with real names – David, Alex, Margarita, Nalleli, Eduardo, Sabrina, and others – who stood at the forefront during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Bert encourages us to think about the invisibility of Latinx workers, including nurses, farmers, firefighters, and activists, who kept the American economy thriving when most of the world stayed home. A visual tribute to strength and dedication, The Warriors pay homage to these fighters, acknowledging their courage, resilience, and warrior spirit.

FAKE MEMORY OF A TRUE PAST

This project seeks to create a reflection on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to generate a historical archive. Currently, what we know about history is thanks to the vestiges and testimonies that humans themselves have left and recorded. Our conception of yesterday depends on that legacy, but what would happen if in the future the account of what happened was in the hands of a virtual entity? Would the vision of the past be the same?

With this project, we will delve into the history of the University of Guadalajara and pay tribute to Raúl Padilla López, the most important cultural promoter and visionary that this institution has had and who promoted the creation of the MUSA Museum of Arts in 1994. This video installation tells the same story from two different visions: the human and the artificial, making a visual comparison of the memory that the human being has preserved with the one that, through algorithms, the AI has generated. Thus, the substantiated testimony and the speculative recreation will be confronted before the eyes of those who observe it, leaving the door open for reflection about the importance of writing our history by ourselves, so the truth about it could be as faithful as possible of what happened in reality.

REPAIRING THE FUTURE

Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) is proud to present Osceola Refetoff: Repairing the Future, a multi-media exhibition focusing on global sea level rise. The centerpiece of the installation is a large-scale immersive audiovisual projection of the artist’s 8-minute film, Sea of Change.

The film’s original footage was shot by Refetoff in Svalbard, Norway, near the North Pole during his The Arctic Circle Artist & Scientist Residency. These visuals are paired with NASA satellite images of the Earth and graphics depicting NASA’s scientific measurements of current climate disruptions. AI-generated animation envisions possible future climate outcomes.

The project was edited with Juri Koll during Refetoff’s 2023 artist residency at Building Bridges Art Exchange in collaboration with Dr. Eric Larour, manager of NASA’s Earth Sciences Division at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The original soundtrack is written and performed by award-winning composer Paul Cantelon and Sultan + Shepard.

Blending hard science, documentary video, and impressionistic imaginaries, Refetoff is known for using aesthetic strategies to define and communicate an urgent need for both personal and systemic engagement, leveraging the natural beauty of remote regions to command our global attention toward local climate issues.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a performance from Hibiscus TV artists Kaye Freeman and Amy Kaps, and will also include a talk with Refetoff, curator Andi Campognone, and Rosanna Xia, L.A. Times climate journalist and author of California Against the Sea.

BE WATER

The immersive installation “Be Water” presents a visual narrative that delves into the multifaceted dimensions of water in nature and human life. Antuan’s creation of the Human Net, a human geometric structure visible in each sculptural piece, symbolizes the symmetry of the universe, elemental purity, and omnipresent wisdom. The characters within the installation represent the unity of humanity in the face of the urgent need to address the global water crisis, highlighting the essential collaboration between humanity and AI to create a new network of human consciousness. This interconnectedness is crucial in working collectively to tackle the challenges posed by the water crisis and establish a new order for the planet.

The installation places a particular emphasis on the intrinsic memory of water and explores how AI can effectively convey the significance of this vital element to humanity. This exploration seamlessly integrates art, science, space, metaphysics, energy, and the compassionate stewardship of our planet. By captivating audiences, “Be Water” aims to inspire a reconsideration of our relationship with water, shedding light on its potential to heal and sustain us through its memory. The “Be Water” installation represents a significant milestone in the ongoing art-science research led by the esteemed contemporary artist, Antuan. Building upon the success of the acclaimed project, “The Other Dimension,” which was showcased in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, FL in 2017, “Be Water” continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression and scientific exploration.

ENTROPIC SYSTEMS

Laleh Mehran’s Entropic Systems is an immersive installation that considers the politicization of ideologies, dictating responses to activities outside and within its borders. Analogous to doctrines imposed by governments or systems on people, the “drawing” machine seeks to instill pattern and order, operating hypnotically and rhythmically. In this work, the machine inscribes a sort of memory into the mineral bed, much like a rudimentary hard drive. Each day the past is erased, but at the same time, the grains will never sit the same again, containing remains of history much in the way that AI is trained with billions of words and yet “remembers” none of them.

THREADED TRACING

Threaded Tracing uses current computer vision technology (LiDAR) to encode natural and human made spaces into digital memory. Made during visits to forests and airports across the US, it plays with the idea of how we remember time and space vs how computers try to represent and process it. As we feed more and more of our lives into AI systems, we must continue to ask what is lost in translation. Music by George Cicci.

BRIDGING EMOTIONAL AND DIGITAL LANDSCAPES

This exhibition explores the intersection of human emotion and advanced digital technology to create a thought-provoking digital mural of individual and collective experiences. Through the utilization of AI-driven word-to-image conversion, tangible printing, and large-scale projections, the artists are seeking to reveal the evolving correlation between personal memories and moments and their emotional and physical manifestations.

Visitors are encouraged to engage with a touchscreen interface to input words or phrases that resonate with their emotions and memories. These contributions are then projected onto a wall, forming a dynamic word-cloud art display that evolves as new submissions are added. The collective impact of societal connections is visually represented as frequently repeated phrases gain prominence through boldness within the projection, reflecting the shared experiences of the community. FEATURED EXHIBITIONS

Expanding beyond the confines of booth spaces, Featured Exhibitions create immersive experiences to engage audiences through thoughtprovoking artworks, performances and other exhibitions offered by participating galleries, highlighting works that will be talked about for years to come.

Highlights this year include works from LP Gallery, Cynthia Corbett Gallery, Fabrik Projects, Art In Dongsan, Pigment Gallery, and Robert Vargas.

“I” OF THE BEHOLDER: DAIN YOON

Dain Yoon is a South Korean fine artist, currently based in New York City. Widely acclaimed for her illusion painting on her face and body, and her prolific work with a variety of media, Ms. Yoon explores the complex portrayal of raw emotion filtered through the unique personal diversity of each individual. Yoon has participated in a wide variety of collaborative projects. She has collaborated with artists, including Maurizio Cattelan, Halsey, and James Blake; worked with museums including the Tate Modern and the Van Gogh Museum; and garnered significant attention in media, appearing on The Ellen Degeneres Show and in publications such as Vogue, Dazed, TOILETPAPER, and The New York Times Magazine.

Yoon views her face as the strongest and most sensitive part of her body: a canvas on which she can deliver her most delicate emotions. Her eyes in particular have always been a key object or primary focal point of her works. For this work, Ms. Yoon chose the title ““I” of the Beholder” to reflect the inherently and unavoidably unique way that each person processes both art and emotion. She used time-lapses of herself in an anxious and agitated state to capture the full spectrum of the emotions revealed through her eyes. Yoon chose large format oil paintings as the medium with the intention to evoke the same feeling of unease in the viewer. The paintings are presented without wood paneling, the same format in which they were created, to convey the raw and delicate nature of the work.

YOUNG MASTERS

Young Masters is a not-for-profit international initiative which was launched in 2009 by gallerist Cynthia Valianti Corbett, founder of Cynthia Corbett Gallery.

Our mission is to support emerging artists from across the world, bringing their work to a wider audience through a triennial Art Prize independently judged by an illustrious panel. Young Masters has an international programme of touring exhibitions and fairs as well as maintaining a vibrant online presence that showcases our wide network.

This unique initiative highlights emerging artists of any gender, age, or nationality, working in any media, whose work responds to the art of the past.

In 2014 the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramic Prize was added to focus more attention on the growing interest in the collection of contemporary craft. 2017 saw the launch of the inaugural Young Masters Emerging Women Award. The fifth edition and 10th Anniversary Exhibition of the Prize took place in October 2019. In 2023 Young Masters returned after Covid-19 with its 6th edition of the Prize and its most culturally diverse and woman led open call yet with 75% of applicants being female-identifying artists.

Young Masters has provided a launching pad for over 350 artists alumni from all over the world. Important alumni include British ceramicist and curator Matt Smith, British painter Flora Yukhnovich, South-African artists Gigs Kgole and ceramicist Lucille Lewin, artist duo Ghost of a Dream and US-based Iranian Azita Moradkhani.

THE SOUL OF YOUR CITY

Welcome to ‘The Soul of Your City’ exhibition, a unique visual journey that brings to life the diverse and intimate essences of cities from around the globe.

This exhibition is the culmination of a global photography competition organized by Fabrik Projects Gallery in Los Angeles, aimed at capturing the hidden spirit and true identity of cities and communities through the lenses of local photographers.

‘The Soul of Your City’ competition was born out of a desire to explore and reveal the unseen aspects of urban living. We invited photographers worldwide to look beyond the familiar landmarks and tourist attractions and instead focus on the aspects of city life that are often overlooked. This included capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow in the alleys, the vibrant life in local markets, the architectural heritage in the streets, and the candid moments of everyday life.

Our call for entries resonated with photographers from various corners of the world, each bringing their unique perspective and creative approach. The resulting submissions are a rich tapestry of images that tell stories of culture, history, community, and personal experiences within urban settings.

The works showcased in this exhibition are the winners of the competition, selected for their exceptional ability to convey the ‘soul of their cities.’ These images are not just photographs — they are windows into the diverse, dynamic, and intricate tapestries of urban life. They invite viewers to go on a visual journey, traveling continents and cultures, to experience the essence of cities as seen through the eyes of their residents.

This exhibition at the LA Art Show presents these winning entries, offering attendees an opportunity to engage with and appreciate the myriad facets of urban environments. It’s an honor to bring these perspectives to such a prestigious platform, allowing the public to connect with cities’ souls through the art of photography.

We thank all the photographers who participated in the ‘Soul of Your City’ competition and congratulate the winners whose work is exhibited here. Their contributions have made this exhibition a testament to the power of photography in capturing and conveying the beauty of our world’s cities.

SOUND:

WISH INTO THE WIND BY CHOI SORI

Art in Dongsan is pleased to feature a special live art performance by acclaimed artist Choi Sori. “Visible Sound: Wish Into the Wind,” is a multimedia piece that invites us to reflect on the origins of life and the majesty of nature.

Through drumming and manipulation of metal surfaces, Choi Sori creates an abstract interplay of light, color, and sound that seems to materialize the invisible energies that animate our planet. The surfaces reflect rays of light in shifting patterns depending on the movement of viewers within the space.

Sori conveys the idea that all matter and energy in the world has its own essence and message. He sees himself as a creative messenger, translating these messages into perceptual experiences that harness sound, rhythm, and the visual arts.

This performance also represents Sori’s lifelong creative philosophy of harmonious coexistence with the natural environment. Created in coordination with the seasonal changes in his native Korea over multiple years, the Wind series, Kalpa, and Fire Paintings on view alongside the performance emerge from a meditative collaboration between artist and Mother Nature.

We hope this performance and exhibition provides a mindful escape from everyday concerns, reminding us of the ephemeral beauty of the natural forces that sustain life on our precious planet.

PRESENTED BY ART IN DONGSAN

JUAN MIGUEL QUIÑONES

Quiñones is a self-taught artist who began in the field of restoration, an approach that helped him to understand the know-how of the old masters, learning all the traditional techniques of stone carving developed from ancient Rome to the Renaissance. An observer and connoisseur of the popular, Quiñones combines his particular sense of humor with the use of precious stones, the most refined technical skill and a profound knowledge of the materials he works with to create trompe l’oeil works that break down the barrier between the everyday object and the work of art.

The artist applies his work in stone to postmodern languages and themes, present urban languages that swing between illusion and memory and allows him to delve into antagonistic concepts such as reality, fiction, artifice or verisimilitude. Consciously, his works elude a direct or closed interpretation, forcing the viewer to project his or her own memories. Very rich in meanings, the evocative object and the material-conceptual trompe l’oeil are the most important material-conceptual. The references used go beyond the recurrent themes of urban art, hence the enormous complexity of Quiñones’ work. As iconic skateboards or surfboards represent elements detonated from evocation. The warm afternoons of southern Spain, from El Palmar to Estepona. But they are also signs of the end of pubescent innocence and the beginning of a new period, adolescence, in which human beings are reluctant to leave forever the domains of playfulness.

THE WORLD HOUSE MURAL

In honor of Black History Month, acclaimed artist Robert Vargas will create this mural on site inspired by one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s last books, The World House.

King imagines the world as a large house in which we must learn somehow to live with each other in peace. We are facing converging global crises – a horrific pandemic, the growing threat of world war, climate change, inequality both in the U.S. and globally, the continuing scourge of systemic racism and tensions in the U.S. brought on by elections later this year.

Vargas brings his dynamic approach to portraiture and re-imagines this inherited large house on canvas. As King writes, “A great ‘world house’ in which we have to live together — Black and white, easterner and westerner, gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Muslim and Hindu – a family unduly separated in ideas, culture and interest, who, because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace.” Robert Vargas brings necessary attention and healing through this mural in the spirit of mindfulness, and creating art for the greater good of mankind.
