Whether you are a seasoned collector or merely an admirer of the arts, we are certain that the LA Art Show will provide you with a special experience in the world of Modern and Contemporary Art. We have created the most diverse Art Show in the world. We strive towards making the LA Art Show a premier international arts destination, in the likes of Art Basel, Frieze and The Armory Show. Art has always been at the forefront of society, bravely going where others feared to tread, whether it was the use of color, texture, composition or materials, artists have always pushed the envelope. It takes a discerning eye and measure of courage to embrace and appreciate the new and the different and today’s collectors are a brave and appreciative crowd. A show of this magnitude requires coordinated efforts from a myriad of people, and I wish to thank my entire team, especially Kim Martindale, whose dedication and hard work made this show possible. I am grateful to all our new participants and to the many great galleries that return each year who travel here so that we may enjoy their spectacular works of art. The LA Art Show is proud to serve as a vehicle for today’s artist to be showcased and displayed. Our guests are provided the opportunity to enjoy a unique assortment of creative expression from all corners of the globe. I am proud to welcome you to the 22 nd edition of the LA Art Show and to celebrate the fertile efforts of the human mind.

Enjoy the Show!

MEL RAMOS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The LA Art Show in conjunction with Littletopia is proud to announce the 2017 Artist Lifetime Achievement Award honoring Mel Ramos. Mel is recognised as one of the first artists to embrace Pop art in the early 1960’s. His paintings have been shown in major exhibitions of Pop art in the U.S. and in Europe and reproduced in books, catalogues, and periodicals throughout the world. He is truly an American icon and the LA Art Show is honored to recognize his legacy in the art world with our second annual Artist Lifetime Achievement Award 2017. Mel Ramos is an American Pop artist best known for his female nudes painted alongside brand logos. In the early 1960s, Mel Ramos (born 1935), he abandoned Abstract Expressionism and began to produce the work of glossy, flat paintings of idealised, voluptuous female nudes emerging from banana peels, lounging on top of cigars or caressing bottles of ketchup. Ramos’ pointed coupling of women with familiar products serves as a commentary on the ways in which modern culture has cast the female body as interchangeable with beauty and consumerism. Like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Ramos found imagery from comic books inspirational for his highly graphic style and grew up drawing the cartoons and characters from their pages.

BEN GORETSKY COLLECTOR

OF THE

YEAR

Ben Goretsky, a native to Los Angeles [born and raised], wanted to be an artist from a very young age. Unfortunately his family made it clear to him that if he was to become an artist that he would be a starving one. That is when Ben switched from trying to be an artist to just being involved in the artist community. He currently owns and operates 3DRetro, a collectible art-toy store in Glendale which not only sells collectible art figures but also produces limited collectibles as well. The company has already produced figures with such artists as Gary Baseman, Brandi Milne, Nathan Ota, Bob Dob, Nathan Hamill, Juan Muniz, Greg “Craola” Simkins and many more. Ben also has helped support the creative art community by founding and running the annual show DesignerCon. The show, now in it’s 12th year, runs in Pasadena CA and is host to hundreds of artist, galleries, collectible manufacturers and other designer vendors from around the world. His involvement with the art community has helped Ben acquire a fantastic collection of not only 2-Dimensional art pieces but also 3D figures and collectibles.

CARLOS MART IEL CURATED

BY

CAUCE/RIVERBED

M ARISA C AICHIOLO

In his work “Cauce/Riverbed,” Carlos Martiel exposes the significant challenges faced by immigrants in California and the larger United States. Martiel digs deep into the nature of undocumented immigration and shows how it impacts the lives of some eleven million individuals and their families in the world’s most powerful nation. His performance is a window to the human tragedy that grossly affects immigrants with low-education levels and limited English language skills, who come to the United States risking their lives as they venture into the dangerous desert in an attempt to cross the Mexico-US border. As Martiel shows, despite the highly-publicized “American Dream,” for these poor and uneducated immigrants, making it alive into US territory does not necessarily guarantee access to better opportunities or to a higher quality of life.

DOMA | L A In many ways, DOMA’s installation is an exploration of their Latin American heritage from a “glocal” (simultaneously global and local) perspective. No stranger to the LA art scene, their members have presented here before, with pieces that typified their fascination with creating absurdist breaks in urban landscapes. But with “LA,” they go farther, commenting on the shiny veneer of LA as a polished and automated commodity ripe for export to cultures enamored of it. “LA” begs the question of what happens to a city after it becomes a brand. How should the ‘sellers’ and ‘buyers’ of such a brand, within it and outside of it, respond; and what then is the ‘real’ Los Angeles? DOMA is uniquely poised to explore these questions as longtime critics of globalization’s effects, both positive and negative, through their ironic installations. By presenting this work within the LA Art Show, though, they suggest that the role of art is to confront these problems honestly and headlong, and that the real power of aesthetic experiences lies in their ability to inform and transform viewers’ outlook. “Understanding the world as a big lab helps to detect the reaction to each action. We are living a special moment in history. This scenario calls for action. DOMA tries to interfere in ALL the information channels available. Working with the same elements as them with a bit of irony…” DOMA, 1998.

The staged performance entitled “Violent Times” by Melanie Pullen, will deliberately explore the ceremonial aspect of violence and how we dress for both violence and war. Melanie will re-enact various acts of violence, relevant in today’s societies, in a theatrical and interpretive staged setting. The performers will be contained inside a large clear bubble and will be lit in the same manner as her signature still photographs, creating an invisible wall between the viewer and the performance.

MELLA JAARSMA | T H E C A RRIE R C URATED BY B AIK A RT

Mella Jaarsma’s wearable sculpture The Carrier addresses the fleeting nature of all living things, especially the temporality of humans and their urgent need to escape their current situation or move from place to place. She notes how the human condition of gathering experiences without knowing why, collecting possessions, and fearing death while longing for immortality impacts every living human being. We live in a world in which people are on the move as travelers, vacationers, explorers, and even migrants fleeing the oppressors of their beloved homelands. Today, in capitalist-driven environments, merchants and their consuming masses can be considered carriers of cultures on the move from country border to country border, some of them on the run from oppressors and dictators begging the question: What do I take and what do I leave behind?

R AM I R O GOM E Z | CUT- OUTS CURATED

BY

CHON NORIEGA

The Cut-Outs installation piece, an 8 x 73 foot acrylic on cardboard mural, deals with scenes from Gomez’s West Hollywood neighborhood. Gardeners and pool cleaners tend to the outside, then the mural proceeds inside, depicting housekeepers cleaning the living room, dining room, the bathroom and finally, the bedroom. Playing with negative space and with perspective, Gomez has life-sized cardboard figures emerge from the body of the mural, standing alone in the space, confronting the viewer. The piece functions as a still-life of affluent Los Angeles.

“In my Floating World, Landscape of Paradise, a soft sculpture, Garcia collected inner tubes in different sizes and in a variety of shades of blue. She also bandaged the surface of some of the inner tubes with photographic images of the sea on which she has drawn a variety of symbols from her visual repertoire that refer to the memory of the sea. She composed a floating landscape with these inner tubes, creating a randomly organic form connected by electrical ties, sometimes tied very tightly, a suggestion of the struggles hidden within the deep blue beauty. Also each of the inner tubes carries an airport baggage tag that identifies the intended destination of the waves, which is New York, alluding to the contemporary promised land of the free.

Widely considered one of the most influential Korean art movements of the 20th century, Dansaekhwa (pronounced “dawn-say-qua) is rooted in mesmerizing abstractions. Though the methods and mediums vary greatly across the monochromatic genre, works are typically rendered via pushing layers of white, black, blue, or earth-toned paints across soaked canvases or dragging pencils across (sometimes ripped) pieces of traditional hanji paper. INK PAINTING CHINA

Ink is one of China’s most traditional art forms and possesses a long and rich history. It is a medium that is embedded and a central reference in Chinese culture. Traditional ink painting represents the true cultural heritage of Chinese people, and has persisted as an art form over the centuries. Contemporary ‘ink’ art has evolved out of the traditional use to display endless new possibilities. This has a great bearing on how the traditional medium of ink is recognized, and can be further popularized in the contemporary dialogue. China’s increase in wealth as a country has attributed towards a trend of more interest, collection, and support of the arts. Contemporary ink art has captured the imaginations of collectors and speculators in Asia and Europe, and gradually in China too. Chinese Ink painting has been setting strong sales at auctions such as Sotheby’s Hong Kong and New York. It has become in high demand in the art market. LAAS has showcased and highlighted Chinese contemporary ink art since 2013, over the years it has become one of the landmarks of the show.

BY

M ARISA C AICHIOLO

Born in Holguin, Cuba, Rios studied art at the Institution Superior de Arte (ISA), Havana, Cuba as well as Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana. He currently lives in Mexico. Rios’ massive paintings and deft drawings blend organic, vegetal forms with allusions to the erotic in fantastic displays of sensual excess. Expressed in vibrant colors with a quick, sure hand, or made using his body to apply paint, his meld of Expressionist and Neobaroque explorations appear part abstraction and part dreamscape, recalling the theatrical presence celebrated in the Spanish Baroque.

YI HWA N K W ON PRESENTED

BY

CMAY GALLERY

Yi Hwan Kwon’s eccentric and arresting sculptures and environmental installations are both the sites and the triggers for an explosion of cognitive and visceral dissonance. Cheerfully brimming with paradox, his distorted statuary of modern people have the immediacy and surprise energy of Pop Art, but none of its flashy, high-calorie excesses. Instead, these object-images offer nuanced disorientation; they are as much about direct experiential materiality as they are about deracinated, mediated perceptions. They offer poetic personal narrative and socio-political analysis. They speak simultaneously in the languages of art history and science fiction. Like Helen of Troy, each of his faces launch 1,000 ships of inquiry. To Yi Hawn-kwon’s mind, the dominant quality of modern existence is tension. We exist in a kind of self-made limbo between isolation and connection, individual and society, real and virtual, phenomenon and invention, in which everything is flattened, condensed, trapped and made relative. In his illusionistic manipulations of the human body – as represented by an eclectic array of exemplar citizens both anonymous and archetypal – Yi Hwan-kwon seeks to give durable physical form to a cluster of ideas about energy and cognition.

PA R T N E R S

Most traditions from the 14th century are long dead. The styles established by leading artists then have given way to widely different modes of expression. Authors on the New York Times Bestsellers List no longer imitate Dante Alighieri, and contemporary artists rarely work in the style of Fra Angelico and Jan van Eyck. This makes Stella Artois truly unique. Our brewing heritage dates back to the middle ages in Leuven, Belgium. The famous Den Hoorn Brewery was founded in 1366 and set the bar for quality taste that Stella Artois is known for today. Only nine years after he was admitted to the Leuven Brewer’s Guild as Brew Master in 1708, Sebastian Artois purchased the Den Hoorn Brewery and carried on the brewing tradition. In honor of legends like Sebastian Artois, our credo is simply:“Be Legacy” We are proud to support the work of artistic risk-takers, including the DOMA Collective, whose mission it is to leave their mark on the world, just like Stella Artois continues to do. Welcome to the 2017 LA Art Show, and enjoy.
