WELCOME The 20th Annual LA Art Show is the largest and longest running platform for modern, contemporary, historic and traditional fine art, bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The LA Art Show has become the most internationally diverse art platform in the Western world, bringing in the largest groupings of Korean, Chinese and Japanese galleries outside of Asia. The LA Art Show has actively developed its international gallery offerings to provide collectors with a unique opportunity, to spot international trends and zeitgeist through art, a medium that has the ability to transcend language. The show features two distinct sections: The Modern & Contemporary Section and the Historic & Traditional Contemporary Section. In addition to viewing the finest works displayed, admission to the show also includes the opportunity to enjoy the show’s stimulating Dialogs LA, special exhibitions, installations and performances, featuring internationally renowned artists, curators, critics and art professionals.

LA Art Show Cracks the Code of the LA Art Market “After 20 Years, We Know Art in LA...” The LA Art Show is Los Angeles’ Art Show. With FIAC’s recent announcement postponing their first foray into the LA market, it has become increasingly clear the only art fair to crack the code for success in the city is the LA Art Show. Taking place January 14-18, 2015 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, The LA Art Show is a 200,000 square foot platform for fine art that brings in more than 50,000 visitors, eager to see 120 galleries representing 22 countries from North & South America, Europe & Asia. LA is the hottest and quickly becoming the most important art Scene in the US. Many fairs have tried and failed to engage the city’s vibrant market over the years including: Art Platform Los Angeles, The Affordable Art Fair, Pulse, and most recently, the Worldwide Art Fair. Yet none has made a mark like the LA Art Show, which meets the need of this very diverse city with

a comprehensive art experience that has been curated into two distinct sections: Modern & Contemporary and Historic & Traditional Contemporary. Over the years, the show has changed and grown with Los Angeles. With attendance figures climbing annually, the LA Art Show has a proven record for success. Fueled by the show’s production team who, in conjunction with a vetting committee, compile a select group of galleries, the LA Art Show has grown to be the platform for art in the West. Welcome to the 20th annual LA Art Show, offering you the most diverse experience of stimulating visual art. We are excited to announce that over 120 galleries from across the nation and from 22 different countries will gather to present our 20th anniversary Show, making it truly an exceptional and unique art exhibition. Looking back on my 20 year involvement with the LA Art Show, I am proud and honored to see how the fair has evolved: changed locations, expanded its platform for galleries who represent the vanguard of fine art, and reflected the scope and trajectory of the vibrant Los Angeles art scene. The fair’s reputation—earned over the last two decades—has been manifested by showing work of the highest merit and serving as the only event to strategically incorporate galleries representing diverse art genres to broaden its audience. Enthusiasts with varying tastes from modern and contemporary to historic and traditional, as well as works on paper, sculpture, and installations, are able to see it all under one umbrella. As a perfect complement to our 20th anniversary, this year’s beneficiary is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. Our Opening Night Premiere Party, hosted by Amy Adams and Darren Le Gallo, will honor St. Jude and their lifesaving mission. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. Together, we celebrate the ability to help spread the word to our peers and drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90% in the next decade. We continuously develop new projects to strengthen the fair’s commitment to the art world. Now and Then: A conversation about the differences in the artistic processes of art from two Cuban artists living in different countries
Speakers: Cuban artists Angel Delgado and Angel Ricardo Ricardo Rios Moderator: Marisa Caichiolo, President of Building Bridges Art Foundation Now and Then explores the artistic processes of two Cuban artists who have produced works of art outside Cuba while still representing their cultural heritage. Angel Delgado’s exile from Cuba compelled him to transform his artistic style while paying homage to Cuban culture. Similarly, Angel Ricardo Ricardo Rios creates large-scale works of art while residing in Mexico. This panel will explore the impact of their conceptual and artistic processes in their works of art, as well as, those who collect their work and who displays them.

Décor à la Mode: Decorators and Clients in Art Deco France
Speaker: Jared Goss Please join author Jared Goss as he examines some of the most colorful figures from the roster of international clients who commissioned high-style French Art Deco interiors during the 1910s, ‘20s, and ‘30s, including silent movie stars, stage actresses, fashion designers, industrialists, explorers, courtesans, and even royalty. Not only will the clients be addressed, but so too will be the specific and spectacular interiors they commissioned as well as the brilliant designers—such as Jean Dunand, Jean-Michel Frank, Henri Rapin, and E-J Ruhlmann—who realized them. This lecture derives from research undertaken for Goss’s book, French Art Deco, a catalogue of nearly one hundred pieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s modern design collection, published in October 2014.

Reinterpretations: A Conversation Between Recent Quilt and Figure Paintings
Panelists: Sedrick Huckaby and Thomas French Sedrick Huckaby’s veneration of the ordinary is exemplified in his 9 x 14 foot painting “Just a Few Patches,” which will be on view at the LA Art Show. This painting monumentalizes a small patch of a quilt made by an African-American woman in the last century, handed down through her family. For Huckaby, these quilts were the African-American women’s form of jazz. Women would sit together making quilts, creating rhythmic patterns and improvising as needed. They created harmony in the quilt. The quilts became more than blankets— they were about community and creativity. Huckaby focuses on the subject of the quilt, expounding on its metaphor for family, faith, and heritage, and its potential to communicate themes of love and reconciliation—to create dialogue bridging generational gaps. In creating “Just a Few Patches,” Huckaby was inspired by the story of George Washington Carver’s conversation with God about the peanut: the revelation of an entire world to discover in the peanut, instead of the futile attempt to comprehend the entire universe. With the quilt as his peanut, Huckaby finds a world to discover in just a few patches. His painted quilts are grandly symbolic, expressionistic and sometimes abstracted —yet poetic and personal—a way to cherish quilts hand-crafted by people and embody their makers. What dialogue is there between the quilt and the portrait? How are these two subjects so closely connected in his work? Join our conversation to learn more!

Panel discussion on Japanese Contemporary Art
Panelists: Tamie Okuyama, Toshimitsu Ito, Akira Omori, Kazz Morishita, and Maiko Kitagawa Moderator: Matt Kennedy Five Japanese artists, who are featured among the nine Japanese galleries exhibited at the LA Art Show, will hold an in depth panel discussion focusing on Contemporary Japanese Art: the influence of traditional and contemporary Japanese art on their work in comparison to Western art; their perspectives on current trends in the Japanese contemporary art world; their unique styles of surrealist and pop surrealist painting; photography and sculpture; as well as other forms of contemporary painting.

Mindful Design and the Art of Storytelling
Speaker: Paul Vincent Wiseman PVW and his talented team at TWG have been creating luxurious interior design for over 30 years. How have they created such a rich and diverse portfolio? Why, upon completion of the project, do clients feel so grounded and at peace living in their homes? Why do world-renowned architect Frank Gehry and esteemed architecture critic Paul Goldberger sing the firm’s praises? By sharing the backstory of three exceptional residences, Mr. Wiseman gives you a firsthand look at the answer: “Mindful” design that tells a distinctive story in harmony with the site, the architecture and the needs and dreams of the clients.

Tansaekhwa I (Korean Monochrome Painting) Exhibition
Panelists: Scarlet Cheng, Arts section writer for Huffington Post, LA Times, Artillery Magazine, Senior Lecturer, Art History at Otis College of Arts and Design; Dong-Jo Chang, Director of The Columns Gallery Moderator: Hoojung Lee, Director of Korean Affairs & Director of Art All Ways In this panel discussion, we would like to share the sociopolitical phenomena of how Tansaekhwa (Korean Monochrome Painting) started and how it developed into a distinct form of Contemporary Asian Art. Furthermore, we will discuss Tansaekhwa artists' painting methods and identify each individual artist, along with their use of technique, materials and colors as examples of Korean monochrome painting. Lastly, we would like to investigate how Tansaekhwa differs from other monochrome paintings in Western Europe and the US, and compare their painting methods and practices.

Breaking with Tradition: Contemporary Chinese Ink Painting and its Conceptualization
Panelists: Li Gang, Contemporary ink artist; Wu Zhan, Curator of Chinese Cultural Media Group Moderator: Weimei Chen, Director of Chinese Art Affairs Presenting a large collection of Li Gang’s ink painting, this conversation between the artist and curator, Wu Zhan, will explore the evolution of Li’s artistic practice in which he takes Western modern and contemporary art styles and transforms them using a traditional medium. Li Gang’s success as a contemporary artist stems from his ability to break through the traditional perceptions of ink and creates a new conceptualization. His contemporary ink art is a classic example of the development of Chinese ink art from the past to present.

The last year has seen public art developments that were not imaginable even 24 months ago. Some murals have been painted out as unpermitted, some have been given reprieve by City Hall, and some artists couldn’t care less if their murals are legal or not. Money is never far away, as walls have been appropriated, donated, rented, leased, bought and sold. What does history have to teach us about the economics of renaissance and culture? How can the City, artists, commercial enterprise and citizens co-exist in this landscape? Join the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles for a panel discussion, as we explore our contemporary public art scene standing at the crossroads of economics, culture, politics and history.

Panelists: Brad Howe, artist; Shana Nys Dambrot, art critic and writer; Rick Robinson, Robbie Conal, Elizabeta Betinski, Margaret Bruning and Frances Anderton. Public Art these days has become increasingly difficult to define, and answers about its arbiters and custodians more difficult to answer. Beyond the conventional purview of the majestic civic plaza sculpture, murals and street art, billboards, private developments, and even more transitory performative works are all dynamic parts of the discourse. Steps from the Downtown business and art districts, the mural culture in the Arts District, and the restored Olympic Freeway Murals, artist Brad Howe (whose work is on view in the Show entrance) and critic Shana Nys Dambrot assemble a panel of artists, curators, and policy-makers to address timely and salient questions like: Who is the public, what constitutes public space, who are the custodians of existing public works, what are the current policies governing the practice in Los Angeles.

Inclusion and Engagement at the Museum of Latin American Art
Speaker: Edward Hayes, Jr., Assistant Curator of Museum of Latin American Art Moderator: Marisa Caichiolo, President of Building Bridges Art Foundation This year, the Museum expanded its definition of Latin American art to include Chicano and Latino art. Prior to this action, MOLAA focused on the work of artists who lived and worked in Latin America. With the opening of Mex/LA, MOLAA’s 2011 Pacific Standard Time exhibition, the Museum began to move in a new direction to embrace the breadth of Latin American art. Join Assistant Curator Edward Hayes, Jr. for a panel discussion about the museum’s initiatives. Panelists will address the topic of inclusion from the perspective of museum education, curatorial programming, and collecting.

Chinese Classical Furniture and Chinese Culture
Speakers: Pu Anguo, Dean of Chinese Redwood Research Institute; Liu Yangsong, Chairman of Beijing Yuanshenglongbo Furniture Co., Ltd Classical Chinese furniture is a very significant element of China’s rich cultural heritage. It is an outstanding representative of the oriental arts, so it is not only the furniture, but also the work of art that can be collected. The lecture will consist of a discussion about the brief history and style of Chinese furniture, its value, and its evolution in Chinese culture.

The Arts District: The Development of an Art Scene and the Art of Development presented by Cartwheel Art and Arts District Alliance
Panelists: Yuval Bar-Zemer, Mark Borman, Stephen Seemayer, Carlton Davis, Steve Grody, Ashleigh Sumner, Yasmina Cadiz and Weimei Chen. Co-Moderators: Cindy Schwarzstein and Justin Shenkarow Cartwheel Art, along with The Arts District Alliance, a project of Arts District Community Council LA (ADCCLA) presents a panel discussion featuring artists, developers, historians and creative entrepreneurs exploring the history of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District and how the area's shifting elements contribute to today's changes in one of the city's most unique neighborhoods. The Arts District's past and present mirror the issues facing many cities as they develop older districts into attractive creative hubs for businesses and residents. Developers from around the world are purchasing land, redeveloping historical buildings, and starting to build from the ground up in an unprecedented rush for property, which threatens to displace the artists and earlier adopters who gave the neighborhood its unique character. Some of the questions for the panelists will be: Why do developers follow artists? Why is the Arts District one of the “hottest” areas in the country? What is it about artists that make an area “cool” and create a fervor that more mainstream people then follow? Can the Arts District balance development and maintain its authentic core as a neighborhood rich with artists who might not be rich?

hinese contemporary art has developed over the past thirty years through trials and hardships. From absorbing the ideas and techniques in Western painting to developing a critical adaptation, Chinese contemporary artists have constantly endeavored to refresh and expand their understanding and interpretation of art. The themed exhibition of “ Inspirations-Highlights of 2015 Chinese Contemporary Art” to be presented during the 2015 LA ART SHOW will feature easel painting works by prominent Chinese contemporary artists, including Zhang Hong, Ding She, Xu Junhua, Chen Jian, Zhou Gang, Chen Jiushuang, and Su Xing. Abstract expression is deeply rooted in Chinese culture of a long history, reflected in symbols, design elements, art forms, decorations and people’s aesthetic response. At this exhibition, the artists will display their most dynamic and passionate original works to showcase their view of the swiftly changing world and their life experience as reflected through art, forming the soul image of their generation. There are no heroic epics or revolutionary storms, but the globally common issues. In different styles and patterns, the artworks displayed at this exhibition either focus on contemporary abstract images, or bright colors, or feature exquisite texture and lively charm, but they all tell the stories, metaphorically, of the development and essence of traditional Chinese art, as well as the imaginative symbols they have created.

Lacquer art in China has been used since the Shang dynasty for decorating and preserving wooden objects. It has evolved over time becoming more intricate and refined, serving more as collections of art than simply preservations. Su Xing, born in 1962, is a renowned modern Chinese Lacquer Artist. Su has dedicated his life to the art of lacquer painting, experimenting with different techniques and recreations in Lacquer Painting, adapting of art form, and integrating new ideas into his work. In 2005, Su successfully invented lacquer paints that come in tubes like oil colour, which greatly reduces the time needed to prepare l acquer paints and gives instant lacquer colours that are more vibrant. In Su’s words, it gives more expressive and imaginative results.The invention of tubed lacquer paint has been named a “revolutionary breakthrough in lacquer art history”.

Light of Ink- Chinese Contemporary Art’s Restart In recent years, “contemporary Chinese ink” has become a brand-new direction of Chinese contemporary art. Such phenomenon exists in the large amount of exhibitions held by Chinese art museums, galleries and art fairs, and also manifests in the high price of auctions. During the “Light of Ink- Chinese Contemporary Art’s Restart” of the National Exhibition of China, we would like to introduce a group of excellent contemporary Chinese ink artists to the audiences from all over the world. Among these artists, Li Gang combines the traditional Chinese ink’s concept with Western art’s abstraction to form his unique art style. Through his art works, Li Gang tries to research the changes of traditional Chinese ink within the contemporary cultural context. He underlines that the Chinese ink should say goodbye to ancient taste, and should be reconstructed under contemporary context. Furthermore, artist Zhuang Yujun has reconstructed the traditional Chinese figure painting into huge art works with Pop Art concept. He changes the individual scholar painting into public art. Through the “monument” of well-known celebrities, Zhuang Yujun tries to express the special value of traditional Chinese art concept in the contemporary society. And in other young artists’ paintings, the old Chinese ink has become rich and colorful. Among these works, there are private feelings about daily life, contemporary reconstruction of traditional Chinese ink skills, and mixture of Renaissance style and Chinese culture as well. At LAAS 2015, Volvo collaborated with Freewaves to highlight the work of Pascual Sisto, an artist living in Los Angeles and representing the digital edge of contemporary art. Freewaves has repeatedly shown his videos, including during How Can You Resist at the Hammer Museum and during Hollywould on the boulevard; as well as a permanent piece in the Bradley Terminal at LAX’s See Change in the International Arrivals area. Shown at the LA ART SHOW are his video installation Push/Pull (my luck is your misfortune) and latest video works on monitors from his Expanded Series. Sisto has created a site specific multimedia installation inside the booth to function as expanded environment in which to experience the connections between the two works.
PASCUAL SISTO Push/Pull (my luck is your misfortune) Two video projections face each other in a darkened room. A never-ending, tunnel-like flow of automobiles passes from one screen to the other, approaching in white and receding in red. These opposing, kaleidoscopic images create a suspended state for the viewer, neither coming nor going, in the space in between. These seductive automobiles that overwhelm L.A. are complemented with digitally enhanced plants, tranquil in the aftermath. The video animations, printed carpet and custom painted set walls match the color and patterns of the plants to allure viewers into an expanded synthetic environment. The photographic and the synthetic co-mingle, asking the viewer to sort the realities from the forgeries so easily combined. 194

PASCUAL SISTO Aucuba Expanded About Pascual Sisto Pascual Sisto is an internationally recognized artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Highlights of his recent noteable international commissions include: a commission by Michael Tilson Thomas, former conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, to create a unique video scenography for the New World Symphony in Miami; a commission by architect Thom Mayne to create multiple video works at the Centre Pompidou; and a commission by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department to create a permanent installation of 29-channel video at LAX airport. Additionally, the monochromatic theme in “Dark Progressivism: Metropolis Rising” connects to the Hollywood genre of film noir and its predecessor, German Expressionism.

THE FROSTIG COLLECTION Once again, we are beyond thrilled to be back at the LA ART SHOW! We know that the booth space for non-profits is very limited and we are honored to have been chosen to spread the word about THE FROSTIG COLLECTION and the important work that we do. THE FROSTIG COLLECTION is an on-going series of small sculptures and additional works of art that have been created by well-known artists to raise money for a social skills program for children with learning disabilities, Asperger’s and high-functioning autism at the renowned Frostig Center in Pasadena, CA. Los Angeles Art Association is proud to present Ping Pong 2015 at the 2015 LA Art Show. Ping Pong is a multi-destination, cross-cultural collaboration featuring artists from Los Angeles, Miami and Basel. This most recent iteration of Ping Pong is proud to debut at the 2015 LA Art Show before continuing its exhibition schedule at Projektraum M54 during Art Basel 2015 and finally concluding its run in Miami in December 2015 during Art Basel Miami Beach. Ping Pong is curated by Sue Irion, Peter Mays and Mette Tommerup. Los Angeles Art Association has been providing opportunities, recources and services for emerging artists since 1925.

Los Angeles Art Association is proud to present The Paradise Circus by J.T. Burke, a physical and conceptual mash-up of confession booth, cathedral steeple and big top tent. The exterior of the structure will be covered with circus posters announcing religious-themed acts, presenting canonical mythology as entertainment spectacle. It is a lighthearted lampoon of traditional orthodoxies and a comparison of doctrinal storytelling with carnival merriment. The interior of The Circus will be darker, featuring symbols, characters and runes of unknown origin in a foreboding environment. A large, imposing face greets you at the entrance (could that be St. Peter, Ridwan, Uriel or Charon?) and a traditional church kneeler invites you to make obeisance and push open the slider to reveal...a small glimpse of Paradise. It is said that the role of the artist is to reveal unseen truths. Burke is creating this work, and all the work in this ongoing series, because he oftens wonders about what lies beyond this mortal life. He questions the veracity of those who claim to know, and challenge the authority of monolithic institutions that spin stories and perpetuate myths for purposes of social control and political gain.

KAFA an installation by Olga Lah Background of KAFA In June 1989, a group of the arts supporters in the Los Angeles area founded the Korea Arts Foundation of America (hereinafter "KAFA"), a non-profit organization, to promote creativity, research, study and exhibitions in the arts. KAFA arms to encourage cooperation and free exchange among those who are interested in the arts, to provide educational facilities and services for persons and organizations engaged in all forms of artistic studies, and to coordinate, plan, organize and execute art projects. All Funds for KAFA are primarily derived from contributions by KAFA members and supporters. KAFA selects one artist biennially (even numbered year) and awards $10,000 to the winner. The purpose of the awards is to facilitate the capability for realizing creative endeavors, and to enhance, encourage and nurture artistic accomplishments, and to acknowledge the presence of outstanding Korean-American artists. Awardee’s art work will be exhibited in the Los Angeles area.

2014 KAFA Awardee Olga Lah is a second generation Korean-American, born and raised in the Los Angeles area. She now resides in Long Beach, California. She received a B.A. in both Studio Art and Art History from the University of California at Riverside. She also received a M.A. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Her interest in the relationship between theology and art led her to an art practice exploring these themes in site-specific installations and sculpture. She has exhibited at the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles; the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance; and at the Venice Arsenale in Italy. She will be exhibiting an installation project at the Orange County Museum of Art in 2015. She recently completed residency at the prestigious Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, CA. Founded in 1996, it is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art. PERMANENT COLLECTION MOLAA features over 1,300 works of art in its internationally recognized collection. The MOLAA Permanent Collection is one of the most significant holdings of modern and contemporary Latin American art in the nation, comprised of works by Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, Francisco Zúñiga, Roberto Sebastián Matta, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Fabelo, Lucia Maya, Fernando Botero, Jorge Marín, Leonora Carrington and Rodolfo Morales among others. The museum campus also includes a 15,000 square foot outdoor performing arts venue that displays a collection of outdoor sculpture nestled in a drought tolerant garden. EXHIBITIONS The Museum’s exhibition program features work by important modern and contemporary Latin American artists, selections from our permanent collection as well as hosting travelling exhibitions. Most recently, we featured Frida Kahlo, Her Photos, an exhibition organized by Museo Frida Kahlo. MOLAA’s season opens with Esterio Segura, the mid-career survey of one of Cuba’s most provocative contemporary artists. Esterio Segura is on view through February 15, 2015. This year, the Museum expanded its definition of Latin American art to include Chicano and Latino art. Prior to this action, MOLAA focused on the work of artists who lived and worked in Latin America. With the opening of Mex/LA, MOLAA’s 2011 Pacific Standard Time exhibition, the Museum began to move in a new direction to embrace the breadth of Latin American art. Photographer Jim McHugh has chronicled the Los Angeles art world for over three decades, publishing several books including “California Painters: New Work” with Henry Hopkins and “The Art of Light and Space” for Abbeville Press. His artist portraits were included in the Getty Museum’s “Pacific Standard Time” in conjunction with Timothy Yarger Fine Art. This massive 16 foot panorama photo-collage is of the recent graffiti installation titled Scratch at the El Segundo Museum of Art, ESMoA. Considered one of the most forwardthinking small museums in America, “Scratch,” was curated by David Brafman, curator of rare books at the Getty Research Institute. The photographic mural includes many separate images of both artists and individual graffiti walls. The photograph includes such acknowledged artists as Phantom, Axis, Cre8, Defer, Eyeone, Fishe, Miner, Gajin Fujita, Big Sleeps, Prime, Heaven, Trigz, Patrick Martinez, ENKONE, and Dr. Eye. More importantly, many other dedicated artists freely contributed to this monumental graffiti installation, their extraordinary work is pictured here. About the Exhibit “Scratch” The Getty Research Institute owns a 16th Century manuscript called a liber amicorum (book of friends) illustrated by artists of the time. In 2013, The Getty invited LA’s leading graffiti artists to contribute to a single book, thus creating the Getty Graffiti Black Book. ESMoA and the Getty Research Institute subsequently invited Getty Black Book artists to turn ESMoA into an open black book. Juan Carlos Mu単oz Hernandez
combines his signature graffiti style with the classical traditions of oil painting and sculpture. Born in Mexico, Mu単oz Hernandez was exposed to the Los Angeles graffiti arts scene and thus aerosol based mural painting when his family moved to Boyle Heights. He was quickly commissioned by Homeboy Industries to paint a public mural, which led to further commissions throughout L.A. County. In 1992, after a rigorous interview process, world-renowned sculptor Robert Graham selected Juan Carlos to join the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Torso Project. Since then he has worked on internationally acclaimed projects including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial in Washington D.C., Duke Ellington in New York, Charlie Parker in Kansas City and Our Lady of Angels Cathedral doors in Los Angeles, California. Mu単oz Hernandez's work has been included in numerous museum and gallery shows over the past twenty years. He is currently represented by Timothy Yarger Fine Art, Beverly Hills.
Rolland Berry
is a contemporary artist and muralist whose art bridges the gap between pop art and graffiti. Berry has built himself a brilliant identity using reckless and powerful details such as bold collages, unique color concepts and hand silkscreen methods; all of which are guided by his own rules and sense of style. Art Going Public – Happily Ever After? An exhibition by The Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles (MCLA) curated by Isabel Rojas-Williams
Most people agree that quality public art is desirable. But after the unveiling and party, art in public space can take on a life of its own. Economics, appropriation, and changing neighborhoods are among the factors that push public art away from the intent of the artist. This exhibition will showcase the historical and cultural evolution of some of Los Angeles’ most notable pieces of art displayed in public. Embracing LA’s visual art culture, this exhibit will include, among others (in alphabetical order), Carlos Almaraz, Angelina Christina, David Botello, Pablo Cristi, El Mac, Wayne Healy, Victor Henderson, Judithe Hernández, Willie Herrón III, Alex “Defer” Kizu, Francisco Letelier, Los Four, Gilbert “Magú” Luján, Michael Massenburg, Noni Olabisi, Frank Romero, and Kent Twitchell. In conjunction with the exhibition, MCLA will also present Public Art Land Grab: The Gold Rush Economy of LA’s Mural Renaissance (Saturday January 17th, 2015 at 4 pm) a panel discussion moderated by Isabel Rojas-Williams. We are one year into LA’s new mural ordinance, and the City’s public art community has experienced unprecedented creativity coupled with unexpected conflict. The line between sponsors and patrons is ever-blurred. In our temporary culture, is the difference even relevant? Where are the Medicis of today, or is it reasonable to expect such ideal patronage? The last year has seen public art developments that were not imaginable even 24 months ago. Some murals have been painted out as unpermitted, some have been given reprieve by City Hall, and some artists couldn’t care less if their murals are legal or not. Money is never far away, as walls have been appropriated, donated, rented, leased, bought and sold. What does history have to teach us about the economics of renaissance and culture? How can the City, artists, commercial enterprise and citizens co-exist in this landscape? Join the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles for a panel discussion, as we explore our contemporary public art scene standing at the crossroads of economics, culture, politics and history. Tansaekhwa
(Korean Monochrome Painting) Exhibition I Tansaekhwa refers to a style of Korean monochrome painting and is one of the most famous and important artistic movements hailing from twentieth-century Asia. During the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, Tansaekhwa artists manipulated materials, mainly using hues of white, black and brown to create primarily large abstract paintings. Extensive promotion during the 1970s and 1980s, garnered Tansaekhwa artists international recognition and acclaim. Consisting of sixteen paintings, the LA Art Show’s special exhibit, “Tansaekhwa I” will be the first overview of this important genre, focusing on six artists who practiced Tansaekhwa’s artistic manner during the 1970s and 1980s using their unique artistic method. In this exhibition, artists such as Sang-Hwa Chung, Hyong-Keun Yun, Seung Won Suh, Myoung Young Choi, Hwang Hur and KiLin Kim offer a magnificent interpretation of this movement’s visionary practice. Through abstraction, subdued palettes of various hues and texture, these artists reveal a delicacy and refined sense of freedom in their oeuvres. The 2016 LA Art Show will display “Tansaekhwa II” as a further investigation of the movement by introducing additional artists consisting of artworks from notable collections in Korea. ZOOM
is an installation by the interdisciplinary collaborative NO RELATION, led by artist Mads Christensen and architect Steven Christensen. ZOOM originates from an interest in the ornamental excess one often observes in objects when viewed in microscopic detail and the perceptual qu exuberance when amplified. Although an object’s surface detail has a certain relationship to the form upon which it lies, it can also convey an additional layer of information about an object's properties, as in an unexcavated mineral whose striated surface may provide evidence of the geometric logic of its atomic structure. Mads Christensen is an artist residing in Los Angeles. He creates light sculptures using LEDs, microprocessors, and algorithms. His work has been featured at Santa Monica Glow, Create:Fixate, Frankfurt Luminale 2014, Burning Man and A+D Museum, Los Angeles. Christensen is represented by Timothy Yarger Fine Art, Beverly Hills. Steven Christensen is an architect residing in Los Angeles. He is a member of the faculty in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA where he teaches graduate and undergraduate design studios. He received his Master in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
