For nearly 50 years we at Macklowe Gallery have had the privilege of collecting only the finest of fine historical jewelry. Our team, comprised

of historians and gemologists, seeks out the very best of each period, and works to carry out a mission of education, hoping to give jewelry lovers everywhere the ability to understand their favorite piece’s place in history. We seek to give jewelry lovers a little insight into how to date period pieces; the differences between diamond studded Deco and elegant Edwardian, between always golden Retro and the gemmier 1950’s glamour, and more. We hope that our team of experts will have the opportunity to give our valued collectors a tour through the ages in person at this fabulous show, but until then, hope to share some of our knowledge through this brief article. Our own collection begins in the early Victorian

acrostic jewels (jewelry in which the first letter

Era, named, of course, for the great Queen

of each center stone spells out a love message)

Victoria, reigning Queen of England from

for Queen Victoria and their daughters. Early

1837-1900. It is important to note that Queen

Victorian jewelry is charged with symbolism.

Victoria was coronated in the same year as the

she was coronated in 1837, the moment in which Queen Victoria’s style became most widely celebrated and fully matured was when she wed her first cousin, the German Prince Albert in 1840. The great love affair that blossomed between the young Queen and her Prince Consort inspired a sentimentality in jewelry heretofore unseen. Lockets, on pendants, bracelets, and rings, meant to contain locks of a beloved’s hair became widely popular. The same can be said of acrostic jewelry. Although acrostic jewelry was originally made fashionable by Marie Antoinette and the French firm Mellerio, Prince Albert revived the practice of commissioning 10

12/30/19 10:35 AM

The “Mid” or “High” Victorian Era, which began in 1860, maintains the hallmarks of the Victorian style with two very notable changes. The first is that in the 1860s diamonds were discovered in South Africa and large scale diamond mining operations were established there, so a new abundance of the gemstones meant that large scale and predominantly diamond jewelry became not only fashionable but plausible. The other great change that occurred during this period was the death of the Prince Consort Albert in 1861.

Queen Victoria, after losing her great love, had the British royal court present themselves exclusively in what was considered “mourning jewelry” for nearly a decade, creating a huge market and massive interest in jewelry in somber colors that included garnets, topaz,

Lover's eye ring. Circa 1860

jet, gutta percha, etc. and had features like inclusion of hair or miniature portraits meant for remembrance of the departed. Concurrently, this period of empire and burgeoning international trade also witnessed the excavation of Pompeii, the opening of East/ West trade with Japan and the construction of the Suez Canal by the British. Jewelry of the moment reflected these remarkable occasions, with Etruscan Revival being championed by the house of Castellani, and both Japanese and Egyptian inspired jewelry being made across Western Europe.

The Victorian Era saw the introduction of technical innovations at a rate that had eluded previous generations. This rapid introduction of mass manufactured goods created an interest, in the likes of William Morris and Arthur Liberty, among others, in returning to processes in which decorative arts were made with meaningful design and produced by trained artisans. This resulted in the Arts & Crafts movement. Following closely on the heels of the English Arts & Crafts movement was an international style that also celebrated highly detailed and hand crafted decorative arts, sought to integrate and elevate the decorative arts in everyday life and was deeply influenced by Japanese art forms: Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau (Jugendstil in German, Stile Liberty in Italian, and Modernisme in Catalan) was a short lived movement that lasted from the mid 1890s to about 1910. Throughout its brief lifetime it steadfastly rejected revivalism or quotation of any other time period, seeking to create a truly new and unique aesthetic.

Art Nouveau sought to imitate the beautiful imperfections of nature on a poetic scale, and found champions and female models in the likes of famous dancers and performers like Sarah Bernhardt and Löie Fuller. Art Nouveau jewelry favored laborious hand executed techniques like enamel and tended to include full compositions, often featuring a feminine form. It served as a rejection and aesthetic counterpoint to the mere arrangement of gems or bands of metal that were Victorian jewelry.

In 1901 England coronated a new monarch, King

Edwardian Pearl and Diamond Earrings. Circa 1915

Edward VII, and he ushered in a distinct style of jeweled ornament that would long outlive him. After the intensely somber aesthetic of the late Victorian Era, Western Europeans were excited by the style of the lavish and fancy free new King, and so the “Belle Epoque” was ushered in. Many were quick to compare Edward’s court to the opulence and decorative joy of the Courts of Versailles, and jewelry wearers of the day were eager for the return of the lightness, elegance, lavishness and joyfulness of the old French ornament.

One key technical innovation, accomplished in 1900, allowed for the execution of this delicate yet extravagant style, and it was the invention of the Oxyacetylene torch, which made commercial use of platinum possible for the first time since the metal’s discovery. Platinum, which is lighter and stronger than gold, and unlike silver does not tarnish, became the premier choice for the elaborate, lacelike diamond and pearl studded jewelry, fashioned in delicate

bows, garlands, and ribbon like forms that would adorn the lightly hued highly embroidered velvet and satin womenswear of the day. The Edwardian style remained predominant until the disruption of WWI decimated Europe’s demand for luxury items and limited their access to precious materials needed to make jewelry. After the war, women, who had had entered the work force in droves, were reluctant to return to constraining corsets and cumbersome long skirts, and so women’s fashion was changed by the likes of Paul Poiret and Coco Chanel to shorter hemlines and streamlined silhouettes. That, in combination with the artistic revolution that was Cubism, created a great demand for jewelry with stark, clean architectural lines that celebrated the new wealth and prosperity of the 1920s. The result was the movement that was dubbed “Art Deco” after the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1925.

PB20 - Palm Beach Catalogue.indd 13

13

12/30/19 10:35 AM

Art Deco’s stark but gemmy extravagance would survive the stock market crash of 1929, growing, in fact only more and more opulent through the early ‘30s. By the 1937 Paris International Exhibition of Arts + Techniques in Modern Life a new style had emerged, and it was a glaring shift from the white metal, white diamond and strictly geometric designs of Deco. The jewelry exhibited was largely in polished gold, mirrored natural forms in dramatic scrolls and volutes and floral shapes and incorporated colored gem stones. 40 years later, this style would be dubbed “Retro”. Retro remained a super luxe and over the top trend until the beginning of World War II.

After the outbreak of WWII gold became scarce, and so different alloys of gold, including rose gold, became more popular, as did lower karat gold. The “tank” bracelet, mirroring the appearance of tank tracks became hugely popular, as did hollow tubogas and snake chain, which also mirrored the appearance of wartime industrial equipment. Highly textured metal or pave-set small stones made up for the lack of large gemstones, and semi-precious stones like amethyst, topaz, and aquamarine rose to prominence. Patriotic jewelry such as Van Cleef and Arpel’s “Hawaii” collection and Mauboussin’s “Jeep” brooch also became popular and remains very collectible to this day.

12/30/19 10:35 AM

Women of the 1950s, who suddenly had access to gold, platinum and major gemstones again, were enjoying the prosperity that followed the discomfort of war. Lady’s fashion returned to hyper-feminine forms, inspiring flamboyance in jewelry design. The “Retro look largely maintained, but movements like Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism challenged jewelers to add more texture and more dynamism to their designs. Intricate texture, asymmetry and intricate color palettes became the norm, reflecting the artistic trends of the day, while a sense of whimsy, particularly found in the animal pins created by many American and French firms, demonstrated the joy felt by the parts of the world that were finally at peace. Gold, Diamond and Green Tourmaline Earrings. Circa 1950

Understanding jewelry requires deep and wide ranging expertise. Its innovations and its trends are dictated, more than any other medium, by the material advances and technical innovations available in any day and age. It is inherently married to the artform of clothing design, and is influenced undoubtedly by the political climate in which it is made. We at Macklowe Gallery believe to understand and love jewelry is to understand and love history and the history of beauty, and that to collect jewelry is to invite beauty of historical importance into your life.

At the turn of the 20th Century, the short-lived but long celebrated Aesthetic Movement dubbed “Art Nouveau” took hold. Unlike much of the Romantic art and jewelry of the Victorian era, Art Nouveau has a complex relationship with revivalism and a less than clear association with the international influences that drove previous artistic movements. This lecture will examine how the great artists, painters, sculptors and jewelry and furniture designers engaged with or consciously moved away from the philosophy that drove the leading trends that preceded it.

Dr. Rocky Ruggiero, PH.D., Art History Professor and Italian Renaissance Expert Renaissance Pleasure Palaces: The Art of Delectation Renaissance Italians revived the ancient Roman tradition of the suburban villa as a haven from the pressures and anxieties of urban life, but also as a hub for debauchery and hedonism. This lecture will explore the art, architecture and history of perhaps the three most beautiful and well-preserved Renaissance villas – the Villa Farnesina and Villa Borghese in Rome and the Palazzo Te in the northern Italian city of Mantua. The extraordinary art which has adorned these structures for the past five centuries serves as testimony to the often-lascivious revelry that ensued within them.

MIND Of The MASTER BY JAMES D. BALESTRIERI CLEVELAND, OHIO — As the exhibitions, essays and reconsiderations mount in the quatercentenary of his birth, it seems to me that Leonardo Da Vinci approached and solved artistic problems scientifically and scientific problems artistically. This is what is troubling about the orb in the legendary (and now apparently invisible) “Salvator Mundi” — the optics are unscientific and the handling of the reflec-

THE LAST KNIGHT The Art, Armor And Ambition Of Maximilian I BY JAMES BALESTRIERI NEW YORK CITY — The Duchies of Burgundy and the Low Countries. The Kingdom of Bohemia. The Republic of Venice. Brabant. Flanders. The Holy Roman Empire. Names of places absorbed into history and geography classes, the lines that defined them erased from maps, they are as far from us as the world of armored knights, tapestried courts, chivalry and jousts, shifting alliances and expedient betrayals that sustained them for centuries. But that world, the world of the knights, maintains its grip on our imaginations. “The Last Knight: The Art, Armor and Ambition of Maximilian I,” now on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, suggests that rulers like Maximilian labored long and hard to ( continued on page 30 )

WINTER PARK, FLA. — For connoisseurs in the Northeast who think they have seen all of Tiffany’s treasures, it may be time to book a train to Florida. Skip those theme parks in nearby Orlando and make a beeline for the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum in Winter Park, where “Iridescence – A Celebration” is on display through September 26, 2021. The exhibits — around 50 drawn exclusively from the permanent collection — include blown glass vessels, pottery forms, lighting and tiles. Many are marked Tiffany, but there are also comparative examples from the same time period produced by other firms in the United States and abroad. Workshops everywhere were simultaneously striving to produce that elusive shimmering effect. If Louis Comfort Tiffany (18481933) ever sang about a few of his favorite things, iridescence was at the top the list. He was inspired in part by the effect as it occurs in nature — on hummingbird breasts and butterfly wings, for example. But he also had observed objects of ancient Roman and Middle Eastern glass which had become iridescent through chemical changes wrought by time and burial in the earth. Several examples of these archaeological artifacts are included in the exhibition, and Tiffany had his own collection of pieces in his home. As mentioned, all the displays come out of the Morse’s own extensive collection, so a few words about the source of the museum’s holdings. Museumgoers may have heard the institution’s name when the Metropolitan Museum of Art presented the landmark exhibition “Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall” in 2006, a show which was organized in collaboration with the Morse Museum. The loss of Laurelton Hall, Tiffany’s summer residence and architectural masterpiece at Oyster Bay on Long Island, is a heart-rending tale, made more painful by the existence of vintage photos — exterior and interior — of the spectacular unified designs he had created. Iridescence in the form of tiles and glass elements played an essential role in the impression produced. The sad history in brief, the trustees of the Tiffany Foundation sold off the contents of the house in 1946, then the property and its land in 1949. Finally, the structure itself was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1957. In her introduction to the MMA’s 2006 exhibition catalog, curator Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen outlined what happened next: “However, the artist Hugh F. McKean, who had studied at Laurelton Hall, and his wife Jeannette Genius McKean, salvaged

Against the backdrop of a weakening pound, the price of gold in the UK has hit an all-time high. The gold fix, climbing since May, peaked at £1184.17 on Friday, August 2, representing a 3.1% rise on the previous week and above the previous record of £1182 set in September 2011. The silver spot rate reached £13.64 per ounce last week, the highest of 2019 but some way short of record levels. Precious metals are a traditional safe haven at times of economic uncertainty. The current peak follows the increasing possibilit y of a no-deal Brexit and the announcement that the US Federal Reserve was cutting interest rates.

Brighton precious metals dealer Michael Bloomstein reported larger amounts of gold and silver coming in due to the increasing scrap values. At the start of the year he had predicted greater movemen t in the gold price after the relatively consistent levels across 2018 (see ATG No 2373). He pointed out that the ratio between the prices of gold and silver was growing ever wider. “For the past 20 years you would normally have needed about 60 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. Now you would need 85 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold.”
