BIOPHILIA defined, A dialogue with Art, Nature and Science Panel Discussion

The Rosenberg Family Legacy and Looted Art Recovery

Christopher Marley (Artist), Louise Irving (Museum Director for the Weiner Museum of Decorative Art), Violeta de la Serna (Moderator) • Gallery of Amazing Things Biophilia is a condition that, to one degree or another, affects all of humanity. It is an instinctive sense of kinship with the rest of the living, breathing world. Literally translated, it is "love of life." Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm defined it as "the passionate love of life and all that is alive." In this panel discussion, we will explore how NY Times Best Selling Author and Internationally collected Artist, Christopher Marley, has created a symbiotic relationship with art and nature, successfully transforming the art of taxidermy into contemporary work. We will explore humanity's need to connect with the natural world and evidences its stimulating power over us.

3:00PM Glass is More: Stories from the Road Arlie Sulka • Lillian Nassau LLC Arlie Sulka is the owner of Lillian Nassau LLC, world-renowned for specializing in the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany and Tiffany Studios. Since 1998, Ms. Sulka has been a regular appraiser of glass on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow. Lillian Nassau LLC began exhibiting at the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show in 2007. Ms. Sulka will recount her stories from the road as an appraiser of glass for PBS’ Antiques Roadshow particularly how her expertise expanded from her knowledge of Tiffany and other 19th and 20th Century art glass to more common everyday glassware. She will also share some of her most exciting discoveries.

Marianne Rosenberg • Rosenberg & Co A history of the multi-generational art dealing family which redefined the art market and represented luminaries of the twentieth century (Picasso, Matisse, Braque et al.). A discussion of the family’s wartime journey from Paris to New York and the following quest to recover their Nazi-looted art.

3:00PM Post-War Fashion Illustration A Genre Rediscovered Connie Gray • Gray M.C.A Fashion Illustration is back in vogue. Navigating the New Ivory Laws in the United States: How to Buy and Sell Legally.

How Art, Fashion, Technology & Globalism Define Art Deco Jewelry

Scott Defrin • European Decorative Arts Recent changes in ivory laws in the United States has brought a lot of concern and confusion among the antique collecting community. Many don't know what is legal to buy and sell. This talk will briefly outline how the trade in antique ivory can continue legally by knowing the rules.

Benjamin Macklowe • Macklowe Gallery The period between the First and Second World Wars was a time of radical change in modern life. Art, fashion, and broadened international communications all played key roles in defining the styles and tastes of the era that was most famously dominated by the geometric lines and striking simplicity of the Art Deco movement. In this lecture, Mr. Macklowe will offer an in depth look at jewelry from the late 1910s to the late 1930s by exploring how different facets of the era came together to define a crucial moment in design history.

"IT WOULD TAKE A LIFETIME OF TRAVEL TO EXPERIENCE ALL THAT THE PALM BEACH SHOW GROUP HAS TO OFFER."

THINGS OF BEAUTY GROWING British Studio Pottery By Kate eagen Johnson NEW HAVEN, CONN. — As certain ancient philosophies honor the elements of earth, water, fire, air and void, so in its own way does “‘Things of Beauty Growing’: British Studio Pottery,” an iconoclastic exhibition gracing the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) through December 3. The imaginative survey features nearly 150 kiln-fired clay vessels or vessel-inspired works dating from the late Nineteenth Century to the present. After closing in New Haven, the exhibition will travel across the Atlantic to the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge. From its beginnings, the studio pottery movement typically involved potters laboring by themselves or in small groups to craft wares by hand or by wheel. They adopted an artisanal way of working in reaction to industrial modes of manufacture and products. This movement blending Eastern and Western traditions reached great heights in Britain, with pioneering figures Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, among others, creating objects of high artistic and technical achievement while also generously sharing their knowledge with students. As exemplified by Leach, the “father of British studio pottery,” early proponents looked to centuries-old ceramics for inspiration, with Chinese pottery and porcelain from the Ming, Tang and Song dynasties holding a special place in their collective hearts. While Asian methods and aesthetic sensibilities remained a touchstone, studio potters’ stylistic influences and techniques broadened as the Twentieth Century progressed. Part of studio pottery’s enduring ( continued on page 30 )

While still a child, Nigerian ceramic artist Ladi Kwali received training in traditional regional pottery techniques from her aunt. In 1954, she joined Michael Cardew at the Abuja Pottery Training Centre where she learned to throw on a wheel and developed a broader repertoire. In 1962, she undertook a lecture and demonstration tour in Britain and was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) the following year. “Water Pot” by Ladi Kwali, circa 1962. Hand-coiled, glazed stoneware with incised decoration through slip, mottled brown glaze, wood fired. The John Driscoll Collection, New York.

One of the most unusual objects in the exhibition is this large mahogany bathtub, circa 1780–1820, carved from one log, much as native Americans hollowed out logs for their canoes. It was on display when the John Paul Jones House was opened to the public in 1920 and is more than 75 inches long, with a head rest carved at one end and handles carved at each end for carrying it. Portsmouth Historical Society, gift of the Hon. Woodbury Langdon, July 1, 1920.

By RICK RUssaCK

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — The Portsmouth Historical Society (PHS) recently opened its spring exhibition, “Four Centuries of Furniture in Portsmouth.” Concurrently, the society has mounted an exhibition of the works of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters. Both exhibitions are on display at Discover Portsmouth and run through June 18. The organizer of the exhibitions is Gerry Ward, consulting curator at the PHS. The loan exhibition of about 50 objects interprets the furniture made and used in Portsmouth, starting with the joined furniture of the Seventeenth Century, highlighting the Colonial and Federal periods of Portsmouth’s cabinetmaking, the revival style of the Nineteenth Century, as well as examples from the later Arts and Crafts and Studio Movements. Included is furniture used at the signing of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty, which ended the Russo-Japanese War, and examples of locally owned and retailed works of the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries — there is even an IKEA chair. Explored is how changes in furniture have been regarded over time, including the transition from its role as a symbol ( continued on page 30 )

When prominently featured in Portsmouth Furniture (pp 124–27, color plate 3 and the dust jacket), this important high chest was still in a private collection. The inlaid inscription in its pediment — “I + S / 1733” — suggests that the piece was owned by John Sherburne (1706– circa 1736), a merchant of Portsmouth, and made in 1733, which, in the words of Brock Jobe, make it “the earliest dated example of American furniture in the Queen Anne style” (Portsmouth Furniture, p 125).
