From local entrepreneurs to the arts, culture, and the captivating history that has shaped our community, each page is a celebration of Palos Verdes’ unique spirit. The second issue of our recently launched EXPLORE publication has received a fantastic response, thanks to local enthusiasm. We look forward to bringing you more issues in the coming year. A heartfelt thanks to Terranea Resort for hosting a delightful holiday sunset toast and extending a warm welcome to the Palos Verdes community. harvest time
In 2021, the Palos Verdes Peninsula was named as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). The Peninsula became the second in Los Angeles County and the 142nd in California in 2021. Catalina View Farms, a local gem, initiated its harvest in 2016, yielding over 650 cases of exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With an annual production consistently ranging between 600 and 700 cases, the vineyard has expanded its repertoire to include a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reserve. Exclusively available to South Bay area restaurants and markets, the wine is also available at Catalina View Gardens, an enchanting outdoor venue surrounded by five acres of vine-covered hillsides. Situated across from Terranea, the sprawling property benefits from Palos Verdes’ cool, foggy mornings and warm, sun-drenched afternoons—a winning combination according to Catalina View Gardens Owner Vintner Jim York. While the grapes flourish on the Peninsula, the wine itself is crafted in Buellton, California.

brook’sgarden
Oftentimes, a small gesture makes a meaningful difference. Such was the case when a family friend put together a butterfly garden outside the window for Brooke Sailer. Brooke, a Mira Catalina Elementary School student, was fighting pediatric cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, which kept her indoors most of one summer. No one imagined how this garden would inspire her and the Mira Catalina school community. Palos Verdes Magazine was honored to share Brooke’s story, we hope you will read it again and remember Brooke the next time you see a Monarch butterfly flutter by.

A longtime resident, Sullivan shares her Palos Verdes journey, dating back to 1973 when a chance meeting with writer Derek L.T. Gill led to a profound connection with the area. Sullivan and her family fell in love with Palos Verdes, and her husband’s story, “If You Could See What I Hear,” became a best-selling book and major motion picture. Sullivan has a very rooted commitment to the community, serving on the boards of many philanthropies and achieving success as a Realtor, Sullivan’s Palos Verdes story is intertwined with a deep appreciation for the life they’ve built on the Peninsula. 2024 | January | PVMagazine | 19

October 1939 – June 2023 Born in Inglewood, CA, to Scottish immigrant parents, Ian, a proud Angeleno, married his childhood sweetheart and fellow Morningside High School and El Camino College classmate, Marilyn Ness, on September 30, 1961. Dedicated supporters of PCCH, they were fixtures at the Saturday Night Supper for decades. Ian, an avid golfer since his teens, played on the Morningside High School Golf Team, El Camino College Golf Team, and later became a proud member of PVGC, RHCC, and Bel Air Country Club. George M. Sweeney Jaunuary 1944 – October 2023
Born on January 14, 1944, George M. Sweeney, a true architectural luminary dedicated over four decades to shaping Palos Verdes and beyond. When the Peninsula Art Jury was formed in 1923, their goal was to assure architectural consistency and over the past 40 years, Sweeney has been a leading proponent and protector of that aesthetic, both as a past president of the Palos Verdes Art Jury and member of the Rolling Hills Architectural Review Committee and as an architect. Raised amidst the rural charm of the South Bay, he transformed his idyllic surroundings into an enduring artistic legacy. Initially drawn to commercial art, Sweeney’s trajectory shifted when a college professor steered him toward architecture in 1971 at the University of Southern California. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that left an indelible mark on Southern California’s architectural identity. In 1976, a serendipitous encounter with a real estate office on the Peninsula propelled Sweeney into a prolific career, designing residences from Palos Verdes Estates to New York City. Integral to the Palos Verdes Art Jury and Rolling Hills Architectural Review Committee, his dedication to preserving the Peninsula’s aesthetic consistency earned him admiration. Architect Jeff Dahl hailed Sweeney as a “master craftsman” whose expertise transcended aesthetics, delving into the fundamental interplay of structure, function, and beauty. A guardian of architectural integrity, Sweeney’s legacy, synonymous with traditional architecture in Palos Verdes, reflects a life devoted to elevating cultural essence. Some of the styles of homes he designed on the Palos Verdes Peninsula include; Italian, Contemporary Ranch, American Colonial, Traditional Ranch, French Normandy, Spanish Colonial and Early California Ranch.
Heather Chapman Kramer
November 1964 – April 2023 Heather was a remarkable individual whose life embodied dedication, compassion, and community spirit. Growing up in Palos Verdes Estates with parents Drexel and Kathryn Chapman, Heather shared a close bond with her younger sister Camyn, who, in turn, blessed her with two precious nieces. Heather’s academic journey led her to graduate from PVHS in 1983, followed by earning a degree from the USC School of Accounting in 1989. Her professional path brought her to Santa Monica, where she worked for Disney and Honda. Heather’s heart, however, belonged to her family, including her two beloved sons, Jared and Lawson. “It’s been 3 long years since I rode my horse Blue due to a very serious health issue. In October 2023, I was finally able to get back on. With the help of Linda Cooper of Maverick Farms, she and her staff helped me achieve the unthinkable. I’m back on my horse and riding again! Not only did I start riding during the holidays, Linda’s holiday spirit really brightened up December with all of her cool Equestrian decorations, and letting her staff and students like me dress up for the lessons. What an asset to our South Bay riding community and a happy place to be!” —Karen Sarmast

September 1965 – May 2023 Matthew, her devoted husband of over three decades, stood by her side, embodying enduring love. Her children, Becca and Josh, were the center of her universe, filling her with pride. Dawn, with degrees from the University of Colorado and Boston University, dedicated 32 years to Occupational Therapy, impacting diverse patients in various settings. Beyond her professional life, she embraced a vibrant existence, enjoying swimming, tennis, pickleball, and cherished moments with her golden retriever, Riley. Dawn’s legacy lives on in the memories we shared, the lessons learned, and the love she generously gave. Dawn will forever be woven into the fabric of the lives of those she touched.
“My friend Dawn Golding was a force of unwavering strength and kindness. Her battle with congestive heart failure wasn’t just a health struggle; it was a testament to her resilience. She faced each day with a grace that was nothing short of inspiring. Despite the challenges, she always managed to offer a smile, a comforting word, or a listening ear.” — Melani Morose Edelstein
Ann Rheinstrom Cullen
1943-2023 Together with her husband Bill and their two adult daughters, Nina Berry and Debbie Chaky, along with their families, Ann shared a remarkable journey through a life filled with love, laughter, parties, travel, community service, and above all, fun! Born in Evanston, Illinois, Ann lived a vibrant life. From New York City to Rancho Palos Verdes, she actively engaged in community roles, radiating a gentle spirit, nurturing presence, positive energy, wide smile, organizational skills, and unwavering devotion. Truly a people-person, over the years, she held active board positions in the Junior Women’s Club, Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital, and National Charity League, while also volunteering at Torrance Memorial Hospital. A golf enthusiast, she organized tournaments locally and in Palm Desert. However, her greatest joy was being a devoted mother and grandmother, leaving an enduring impact.Ann’s legacy is one of warmth, joy, and dedicated service, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Ronnie Silverstone 1942-2023
In loving memory of Ronnie Silverstone, who passed away on February 7, 2023. For 36 years, Ronnie dedicated herself to teaching kindergarten and preschool, infusing joy through music in her classrooms. Beyond teaching, she connected with popular artists, producing children’s concerts and founding Bubble Rock Productions, which spread joy through music concerts in Southern California for over 20 years. All proceeds went to her grandchildren’s college fund. Ronnie, a perpetual “Energizer bunny,” loved bubbles, teaching bubble classes, making Bubbie cookies with her grandchildren, knitting for shelters, playing mahjong, and spearheading community initiatives. Her boundless love extended to family, friends, students, and the Jewish community and Congregation Ner Tamid. A true inspiration, she is deeply missed, leaving an enduring legacy of love and joy. To honor her memory, donations can be made to Congregation Ner Tamid preschool and the American Cancer Society.

2023 year in review In 2023 the Peninsula came together for a special day to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first real estate event held in Palos Verdes. The Palos Verdes Library District organized Doors Open Peninsula (DOP) which took place on June 17, 2023, exactly 100 years to the day of the first real estate rally. Many local organizations and historical sites had volunteers on hand to give tours and greet the public. Special “passports” were handed out to participants and a wonderful day of exploring the Peninsula was enjoyed by both residents and visitors. A few of the places that opened to the public were the Nike Missile Silo at the Ken Dyda Civic Center, the historic La Venta Inn (also celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2023), the Mirlo Gate Lodge Tower in Palos Verdes Estates, and the workings of the giant Palos Verdes Flower Talking Clock designed by jeweler Michel Medawar in Rolling Hills just to name a few. Palos Verdes Magazine would like to thank the PVLD Local History Center for organizing DOP and for providing our readers with slices of Peninsula history through articles and photos throughout the year. If you missed any of the history articles, scan the QR code to read all the great history articles about the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
