Editor’s Letter

Issue No. 53

Dear Palos Verdes Friends and Neighbors, As October officially starts the holiday season on the Peninsula, we’re excited to bring you this month’s issue, filled with stories that showcase the incredible talent, creativity, and spirit of our community. One of the highlights this month is the Grand Opening of the VEFA Gallery in Torrance. I had the opportunity to visit this remarkable space while it was still under construction, and I can tell you firsthand—it’s poised to become a major destination in the South Bay art scene and beyond. The gallery, brought to life by the visionary Anderson family, is truly stunning. From the handcrafted, Italian-inspired tiles in the bathrooms to the world-class artist exhibitions, every detail has been carefully curated. The enthusiasm of Jonathan and Kath Anderson was contagious, and we’re certain this will be an art destination you won’t want to miss. We’re also thrilled to celebrate the outstanding young talent in our community with the 4th Annual Student Photography Contest. This year’s theme, Summer on the Peninsula, inspired so many creative entries from our local students. Be sure to explore all of the photographs in this issue and, if you know any of these talented students, give them a well-deserved congratulations! Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to you—our community readers. Your continued support means the world to us, and we are grateful to our local business owners whose ad sponsorships allow us to bring this magazine to life each month. Please take a moment to support them and let them know how much you value their contributions. Here’s to another wonderful month of celebrating the vibrant community were so proud to call home.

The Anderson family of Palos Verdes is on a mission to reshape the cultural heartbeat of their community with the launch of VEFA Gallery, a world-class fine art destination poised to elevate the South Bay’s art scene. At the helm of this exciting new venture is Jonathan Anderson, gallery director, whose passion for art and deep family ties have driven the vision behind VEFA. For Anderson, this isn’t just about opening a gallery, it’s about crafting a lasting legacy that blends family, community, and creativity into one transformative art experience. Raised in Palos Verdes the seventh of eight siblings and a graduate of Peninsula High, Anderson credits his father for exposing him to the world’s greatest artists. “My dad has owned his Palos Verdes palace in the sky since the 1970’s near Abalone Cove. We have the most stunning view of Catalina. It’s just incredible,” he says. “My dad was an orthopedic knee surgeon who worked long hours. By the time I was a teenager, he made up for lost time by taking us on these incredible educational trips. They weren’t your typical vacations. They were weeks long.” Prior to these trips Anderson says his dad made the kids prepare. “He required that we watch a 60-hour course of lectures from Ivy League professors about the history and culture of the country we were set to explore. One time, in Egypt, we even toured with the world’s leading Egyptologist, Bob Briers. Those trips planted the seed for art and culture in a way I never expected.” Jonathan Anderson is not only shaping and creating VEFA Gallery from the ground up but is also collaborating with developers and the city of Torrance to craft a visionary cultural master plan. His efforts aim to integrate art more deeply into the urban fabric, fostering a cultural shift that will elevate the region’s artistic presence and create a lasting impact for future generations. “Bringing VEFA here felt right. It’s about creating a dialogue between the community, art, and the spaces we inhabit. Art is the thing that will change the landscape,” he says passionately. VEFA offers a variety of services that go beyond traditional galleries, from showcasing exclusive artworks by global artists to providing comprehensive corporate art consulting. “Just give me a color and a budget and we offer it all. From selecting the artwork to final installation, we handle every aspect.” Housed in a 6,700-square-foot state-of-the-art building, VEFA’s home has a rich history. “Dad bought the building in ‘92 when it was still a bank which he turned into his medical practice,” Anderson reflects. “When it closed in 2015, we realized

we had an opportunity to build something special together, a real legacy project for our family.”. The idea of opening a gallery was an idea that his father had for a long time until one day when he called his son. Anderson was living the good life in San Diego, surfing, and soaking in the sun when the call came. “He told me he didn’t want to sell the building and asked me to move back home to open this gallery,” he recalls. “That’s what brought me home.” The entire Anderson family played a role in bringing VEFA to life. Jonathan’s brother Joey serves as the general contractor, Gabe and his wife handle creative direction, and their youngest brother George who is still in college, is lending a hand when he can. “We didn’t hire a contractor for the gallery; it’s been a hands-on project for all of us,” says Anderson. “It’s a full-on family affair, from the artists we acquire to the sales and sourcing, everything is done in-house.”

VEFA is set to make an immediate impact with its first exhibit The Art of Surf. Running from November 9, 2024 to January 4, 2025 the show is a nod to the coastal roots of the South Bay community. The gallery aims to bridge the gap between worldclass art and the local population. “We want to give people in the South Bay an art destination right here,” Anderson explains. “There’s a lot of affluence between Manhattan Beach and Palos Verdes, and we’re fulfilling a need. People won’t have to drive to Laguna or downtown LA anymore.” In addition to its exhibits, VEFA plans to be more than just a gallery. Anderson envisions it as a cultural hub with rotating events, artist talks, and charitable initiatives. “Each exhibition will be tied to a meaningful cause,” he explains. “For our first show, we’ll be donating proceeds to legendary big wave surfer Greg Browning, who’s battling ALS.” VEFA’s ambition doesn’t stop there. The gallery is working with global artists, offering exclusive residencies and even installing immersive art experiences. “We’re aiming to compete with the biggest

galleries in the world, right here in the South Bay,” Anderson declares. “We want to change the cultural landscape and wait until you see the bathroom. It’s going to look like the peak of the Italian Reanaissance,” he promises. For the Anderson family, VEFA Gallery is more than just a business, it’s a statement. A legacy built on their shared love of art, culture, and the community they’ve called home for decades. VEFA Gallery • 21825 Hawthorne Blvd Torrance, CA • 310-251-2944 • www.vefagallery.com

Destination Art: Celebrating 10 Years Bringing Art to the Community Written by Cind y D o n n e l l y | P h o t o s b y E d M cc l u re

If you have not discovered Destination: Art, this is an exciting time to find out what you have been missing! This year it celebrates 10 years in the community with a “10th Anniversary Celebration and Showcase” on Saturday, November 16th. In November 2014, Destination: Art opened its doors in downtown Torrance, and the combination studios and art gallery is eager to celebrate 10 years of success with the community! Come for an afternoon of beautiful art, food and beverage, fun, art demos, a silent auction, and prizes. Ribbon cutting promptly at 12:30 pm. Tickets are $20 and available now. Destination: Art was expressly founded to bring art and beauty to the community. The studios reflect the unique personalities and styles of the artists. During business hours, visitors can meet the studio artists and get a better understanding of their inspiration, techniques, and thoughts on art. Although this is a unique and successful art

space, the programs are what make Destination: Art a community hub. There are three community outreach programs organized by Destination: Art. The Creative Conversations series promotes human growth and worth through the acknowledgement of beauty and creativity. These talks, at just $10, are led by people who have lived an authentic expression of their passion, allowing their love and enthusiasm for what they do to naturally express creativity in areas such as being a restauranteur, a florist, a psychologist or a business leader. Art for Everyone invites the community to come for a morning of creativity, at a nominal cost of $10 per session. This is an opportunity for people who think that they are not creative or artistic to be touched by the process of creating small works of art while learning some basic design principles. Friends of Destination: Art is a program in conjunction with the Autism Society of Los Angeles

This drop-in program is open to everyone and is $15 ($10 for members). Destination: Art brings together 12 Studio Artists, 20 Gallery Artists and 120 Associate artists who fulfill the belief that art is essential to the flourishing of the human spirit. Studio and Gallery Artists are Juried in, and volunteer at Destination: Art with the organization’s outreach and events. Associates are eligible to exhibit in the Associates’ Only Show once per year. WATERCOLOR WONDERS

The National Watercolor Society’s 104th International Showcase Written by Melani Moro s e E d e l s t e i n

Art lovers rejoice! Get ready for an explosion of color and creativity at the National Watercolor Society’s (NWS) 104th International Open Exhibition, a dazzling display of watermedia mastery that you won’t see anywhere else. Held at the NWS Gallery in San Pedro, this prestigious event is open through November 3rd, 2024, bringing together a global selection of artists who are pushing the boundaries of one of the oldest art forms on Earth. From its founding in 1920 by a pioneering group of Los Angeles artists, the NWS has stood as a leader in promoting excellence in watermedia, remaining a cornerstone of the art world for more than a century. The exhibition showcases not only the versatility of watercolors but also the cuttingedge innovations that have transformed the medium into the broader category of watermedia. “This exhibition is truly a celebration of the medium. It’s about showing the world just how versatile and powerful watercolors can be,” says NWS Vice President Judy Salzman. “Every year, we are blown away by the talent, and this year is no exception.” This year’s collection is a blend of breathtaking landscapes, thought-provoking abstract pieces, and everything in between. Artists from around the globe have submitted their best work, competing fiercely for inclusion in this juried event. Only the most unique, technically skilled, and impactful pieces make the cut, chosen based on a combination of objective factors including design, composition, and technical expertise and the elusive subjective feel-it-factor. Some of the pieces will make you laugh, others will make you think, and a few may even challenge your sense of comfort. The emotional punch behind many works is part of what makes this exhibition so compelling. As Salzman puts it, “This is not just a local event; it’s an international celebration of art. The works on display offer something for everyone, from seasoned collectors to casual gallery-goers.” One of the crowning moments of the exhibition is the selection of a single standout piece to join the NWS Permanent Collection, a hall of fame for the watermedia elite. Inclusion in this collection is a coveted honor, marking the chosen work as

a symbol of excellence. Adding to the excitement, thousands of dollars in purchase awards, cash prizes, and merchandise are up for grabs, supporting the continued work of these talented artists. The bar for this exhibition is set high. Becoming a signature member of NWS is no easy feat. Of the many selected for the exhibition, only 19 artists will earn the right to append “NWS” after their name, a designation that significantly enhances the value of their artwork and establishes them as leaders in the field. If you think watercolor art is still the soft, delicate medium it once was, think again. Since the 1990s, advancements in water-based paints and tools like pencils, crayons, charcoal, and ink have transformed watercolor into a powerhouse of texture, brightness, and depth. These technological leaps allow for genre-blending experimentation, turning traditional watercolor painting into dynamic watermedia art. And perhaps the NWS owes some of its magic to its location. San Pedro, with its breathtaking

coastline, vibrant art scene, and ever-changing light, provides inspiration for local and international artists alike. The society’s presence in this coastal town is no accident, its natural beauty has long been a muse for watermedia. As the exhibition rolls out its 104th iteration, it serves as a reminder that San Pedro is home to one of the most influential and venerated institutions in watermedia art. This exhibition offers a perfect opportunity to discover the power and potential of watermedia in all its forms. The National Watercolor Society’s 104th International Open Exhibition is a thrilling testament to the evolution of a time-honored art form. Don’t miss your chance to see the work of artistic titans and witness the ongoing watermedia revolution in action. The NWS Gallery • 915 S. Meet Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Attorney Jane S. Lee of Guzman Law Group

J

ane S. Lee is an associate attorney working in the areas of estate planning, trust and probate administration. She earned a JD degree and a Master of Laws degree in taxation. Before joining Guzman Law Group in 2019, she assisted individuals and businesses with developing efficient and strategic tax-planning solutions. Tell me about what you do at Guzman Law Group? Jane S. Lee: I assist individuals, couples, and their families with establishing or updating their estate plan including the Trust, Will, Powers of Attorney for assets and health care, and other documents pertinent to a client’s estate plan. I also assist families through the trust administration and probate process when their loved ones have passed. Photographed by Marisa Guzmán-Aloia

What drew you to working at Guzman Law Group? JSL: One of the reasons I was drawn to Guzman Law Group was the firm’s focus on their clients. I wanted to work closely with clients and develop long-term client relationships to assist them and their loved ones at various stages of their lives. I also enjoy that the firm works collaboratively, giving clients the best outcome in their legal matters. What are the advantages of hiring a smaller firm like Guzman Law Group vs. a large firm? JSL: The advantage of a boutique firm like Guzman Law Group is that there is more personalized attention and flexibility to cater to the client’s needs. The firm values client relationships and the time it takes to build long-term relationships and trust with our clients. How would clients describe you? JSL: Clients would describe me as accessible and that I actively work to obtain the best results based on the client’s wishes and needs. I take the time to listen, understand my client’s concerns, and consider all aspects of their situation, from family dynamics to complex trusts, to ensure their interests are protected and planned accordingly. What do you find most satisfying about your job? JSL: I am most satisfied when the client has found peace of mind after setting up an estate plan that reflects their values and objectives for the future.

“ Jane is an asset to the team. She is a kind, thoughtful, and caring person; all attributes essential to an Estate Planning and Trust Administration attorney. Jane is sensitive to the client’s needs which is especially vital when working with a grieving family.” —Denise M. Guzman Founder and Principal Attorney, Guzman Law Group

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? JSL: I enjoy trying new restaurants with friends, going to basketball games, and playing with my dog, Gomi. For more than three decades, Guzman Law Group has advocated for the families and businesses of the Southbay community. Led by founder and attorney Denise M. Guzman, this Manhattan Beach-based law firm guides clients through business and finance transactions, trust and civil litigation, estate planning and trust administration. With the firm’s wide breadth of legal services and collaborative approach, Guzman Law Group excels at assisting clients in matters that combine multiple facets of law—including preparing estate plans, administration of trusts and the probate of estates.

Catalina View Gardens Celebrates Record-Breaking Harvest Wr i t t e n b y M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o s b y E r i k Jay

With every season, Palos Verdes’ own Catalina View Gardens strengthens its reputation as a premier producer of world-class wines, and this year’s record-setting harvest is poised to raise the standard even further. In early September, owner Jim York and Vineyard Manager Nick Zetts oversaw their largest harvest yet, marking a milestone in the vineyard’s history. Planted in 2012 this marks the vineyard’s sixth harvest of these grapes. With foggy mornings, sunny afternoons and the ocean breeze sweeping through the South-facing slopes of PV, the vineyard produced a stunning ten tons of premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. “This year is shaping up to be the best vintage we’ve ever had,” said York. “It’s all thanks to Nick and the care he’s put into growing these grapes. Every year, the vines mature a little more, and now, after a decade, we’re seeing the full potential of what this vineyard can produce.” The grapes are transported to Buellton, where winemaker Ken Brown and his team take over the production process. In just under a year, Catalina View Gardens will release 400 cases of Pinot Noir, 250 cases of Chardonnay, and 50 cases of their celebrated Rosé of Pinot Noir. Catalina View Wines are available at local restaurants such as Terranea and markets including Lunada Bay Market, Malaga Cove Market and the Wine Shoppe in Torrance.
