Dear Palos Verdes Community, As the holiday season approaches on our beautiful peninsula, I find myself reflecting on the spirit of joy, love, and connection that defines this special time of year. Our community is full of family traditions, cherished memories, and shared celebrations—and it’s an honor to capture that magic in the pages of Palos Verdes Magazine. This month, we’re thrilled to share the inspiring story of Eric and Alan Johnson, two Palos Verdes locals whose transformative vision is reshaping the Port of Los Angeles with the ambitious West Harbor project. Walking the site with them, hard hat securely in place, I was struck by the sheer scale of their endeavor and the thoughtfulness with which they’re approaching it. Their commitment to revitalizing this iconic area while honoring the San Pedro community is a testament to their deep family roots and love for our region. We also had the pleasure of catching up with Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, who calls Palos Verdes home. His connection to our community and his work on behalf of the South Bay remind us of the importance of strong local leadership. And, as always, our Around Town section is overflowing with the vibrant events that make our community so unique. It’s so much fun to attend and get to feature these celebrations, traditions, and achievements month after month. None of this would be possible without the steadfast support of our advertisers. Their belief in Palos Verdes Magazine allows us to bring you stories that celebrate the heart of our Peninsula. I encourage you to support these local businesses and let them know you saw them in our pages—it makes all the difference! Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful, peaceful season filled with love and family. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us. Together, we celebrate the beauty and connection that make our community the best community! Palos Verdes developers Eric and Alan Johnson are bringing new life to the Port of Los Angeles with the construction of West Harbor, a bold new waterfront destination set to transform and reinvent the historic but faded Ports O’ Call Village site. Through their family company Jerico Development Inc., the brothers, along with siblings Craig and Ann Johnson, have partnered with joint venture developer The Ratkovich Company and private equity investor Osprey Investments to create a space that merges local history with fresh, exciting new experiences. Think live concerts, chill waterfront park spaces, topnotch dining, amusement attractions, recreational options, and bustling waterside activities where visitors can immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of a working port and the “industrial theater” of its 24/7 maritime commerce. This long-awaited redevelopment aims to reinvigorate the LA Waterfront, honor San Pedro’s maritime roots, and draw tourists and locals alike back to San Pedro’s historic downtown and waterfront attractions. Among the most thrilling features of this development will be a spectacular Ferris wheel and amusement park with three or four additional rides and a carousel. Other attractions will include an outdoor concert venue being developed in partnership with Nederlander Concerts LA, pickleball and Padel courts alongside world-class restaurants and floating attractions that redefine a unique waterfront entertainment experience. At the heart of the project are Eric and Alan Johnson, longtime residents of Palos Verdes, whose deep ties to both the community and the Port have influenced the development’s vision. “I’ve lived on the Palos Verdes Peninsula most of my life and remember fondly the construction and opening of the original Ports O’ Call in the 1960s, when Alan and I were in grade school. After being selected by the City of Los Angeles to redevelop this once iconic site, we knew intuitively from firsthand experience just what a unique, authentic and fun place the West Harbor site could be. We wanted to create a new unique, forward-looking, and vibrant waterfront attraction that would recapture that pride of place we felt as kids by having Ports O’ Call in our backyard,” Eric recalls. The Johnson family traces their South Bay roots back to the 1920s. Eric and Alan, who have called the Palos Verdes Peninsula home for decades, have a strong connection to the San Pedro Bay port complex that goes beyond development; their family’s history is rooted in the industrial sectors of the region. Their family business began in 1921 in Long Beach, starting in cranes and trucks supporting the oil and gas industry, and moving into oil exploration and production in California and other western states. Over the years, the Johnsons have transitioned from industrial activities in energy to real estate development, always with a focus on the communities where they live, work and build. “We’ve been investing in this area for over 40 years,” says Alan. “It’s our home, and we’ve seen the potential in San Pedro for decades. Now, with the support of the community and the Port of Los Angeles, we’re finally bringing this shared vision to life.”
Covering 42 acres of the Port of Los Angeles waterfront, West Harbor is all about community connection and culinary, recreational and entertainment excitement. The lineup includes Mike Hess Brewing, King and Queen Cantina, the Hopscotch immersive entertainment experience, Poppy and Rose, and Mario’s Neighborhood Butcher Shop & Delicatessen. Stealing the spotlight, Yamashiro, Hollywood’s iconic Japanese restaurant will bring its famed food and Hollywood vibe to the harbor. West Harbor notes that it is currently “openish” with the San Pedro Fish Market, Harbor Breeze Cruises, Wheel Fun Rentals, Catalina Tea Bar, and Coffee with Crème & Sugar open now in the Town Square at 6th Street and Harbor Blvd. They will be joined this spring by a pop-up park called Berth 84 that will feature rotating events and dining activations like Miller Butler, a local favorite pop-up entrepreneur. With a vibrant mix of restaurants, retail spaces and entertainment offerings, West Harbor’s crown jewel will be a proposed 6,200-seat outdoor amphitheater that the Johnsons believe will redefine the area’s cultural scene and help establish West Harbor as a regional Southern California destination. “The amphitheater is such a big focus for us,” says Alan. “It’s going to bring thousands of people down to the waterfront who might not otherwise visit. And once they’re here, they’ll see the beauty of this place and come back for more. We think it’s really going to enrich the waterfront experience and put us on the map. We are so fortunate to have partnered with Nederlander Concerts LA to imagine and create this world-class waterfront music venue.” The amphitheater concept grew out of the Johnsons’ firsthand experience of the longstanding need for a quality entertainment venue in the South Bay. “Growing up in PV, we always had to drive a long way to see the quality acts we wanted to hear, to the Hollywood Bowl, the Greek, or Irvine,” Eric explains. “The drive was a pain, and the parking worse. We wanted to fill that geographical void for local residents with a venue capable of attracting quality acts. We also realized that there was an opportunity to create an entertainment venue experience unique to Los Angeles: A waterfront location with direct freeway access, ample parking onsite and nearby, lots of walkable choices to enjoy a great meal before the show, and things to do after the show if you’re up for it.” But the West Harbor project is about more than just entertainment; it’s about reconnecting the waterfront with the local community, especially San Pedro. “The north end of West Harbor is where Sixth Street meets the water, which gives this tangible connection to downtown San Pedro,” notes Alan. “The local economy is important to us and we’re excited to see how this project will invigorate both the Port and San Pedro’s historic downtown area.” A significant aspect of the project includes the renowned San Pedro Fish Market. Rather than building a new complex nearby, the Fish Market decided to become part of West Harbor, expanding to accommodate up to 3,000 diners in their own spacious new

single-tenant building after initially serving 1,600 in its temporary outdoor phase. This move preserves a local favorite that has been a regional draw for 50 years. West Harbor and Palos Verdes resident Dan Salas, owner of Harbor Breeze Cruises, are jointly developing the West Harbor waterside. West Harbor’s waterside activities will include whale-watching, harbor and dinner cruises, sport fishing, dive boats, and more to create an unforgettable harbor experience on both land and water. West Harbor aims to blend these traditional vessel operations with other unique floating experiences that immerse guests in the vibrant waterfront atmosphere and actually get visitors physically out on the water. “We’re working hard to take full advantage of the mile-long water frontage that we have,” Alan explains, highlighting potential features like an oyster bar on a tall ship, an event space and a spa on a barge, built off-site in a shipyard. The City and Port of Los Angeles have been crucial partners in the project, contributing over $150 million in infrastructure improvements to complement the nearly $200 million being spent by the developers. “Without the Port’s faith in us and our vision for the site, none of this would have been possible,” says Eric. “It’s rare to have this level of true community engagement and support, led by our local elected government officials. Together we generated genuine support for a project of this scale and impact. It’s really a dream come true and rare in the development world.” As the Johnsons look to the future, they are hopeful that West Harbor will not only transform the waterfront but also strengthen the South Bay bonds between Palos Verdes and San Pedro and make a strong connection to the greater Los Angeles community, while creating a regional Southern California destination. “This project is more than just business for us, it’s about transformation,” says Eric. “It’s about having the opportunity to make a difference and create something lasting for the community you live in. Creating a place where people of all ages will get together, have fun on the water, enjoy great food and entertainment, and create memories of unique experiences on the San Pedro waterfront for generations to come. We’re rebuilding this important site for the future, while honoring its past and embracing our connection with the working Port of Los Angeles.” West Harbor will open in phases, with the first wave of tenants opening their restaurant and retail spaces as early as summer 2025. The rest of the West Harbor project site, including the proposed amphitheater, is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2026. As anticipation grows, one thing is certain: This reimagined waterfront stands as a bold testament to the Johnsons’ unwavering dedication to transforming the Port into a vibrant, community-driven destination. Their vision is clear: Create a bustling waterside gathering place where history and innovation meet, shaping a thriving future for the City of Los Angeles and its waterfront.

A Dedicated Public Servant
Al Muratsuchi’s Unwavering Commitment to Community Written by Melani Mo ro s e E d e l s t e i n
20 | PVMagazine | December | 2024
pv profile
Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi emerges as a devoted public servant with a heartfelt connection to the community he proudly calls home. In a recent interview with Palos Verdes Magazine, Muratsuchi shared details of his life, his love for the community, and the relentless dedication he brings to representing the interests of Palos Verdes. A Love for Palos Verdes: For nearly 30 years, Muratsuchi has been an integral part of the South Bay, starting his journey in Torrance after completing law school at UCLA. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that he and his wife, Hirako, along with their daughter Keiko and their small rescue dog, Teddy, decided to make Palos Verdes their permanent home. In his own words, Muratsuchi expressed his gratitude for the privilege of residing in one of California’s most picturesque and privileged communities. Navigating the Weekly Commute to Sacramento: Despite the demands of his role as a State Assembly member, Muratsuchi seamlessly balances his duties with a weekly commute to Sacramento. Every Monday, he leaves his Rolling Hills Estates home, returning every Thursday evening. This rhythm, facilitated by Southwest Airlines, serves as a testament to his commitment to both legislative responsibilities and the comfort of returning home to Palos Verdes, his refuge. Education as a Passion: Beyond his political endeavors, Muratsuchi’s commitment to education shines through. As a parent, former Torrance School Board member, and current Chair of the Education Committee in the State Assembly, he champions the cause of public education. Muratsuchi proudly shared that his daughter Keiko is a student at Peninsula High School, having progressed through Cornerstone Elementary and Ridgecrest Intermediate, showcasing a personal investment in the local educational system. Upholding School Funding and Addressing Critical Needs: A cornerstone of Muratsuchi’s advocacy lies in securing adequate funding for Palos Verdes schools, recognizing the disparity faced by affluent communities in receiving less funding per student. His proactive campaign for equitable resources
is complemented by his emphasis on the crucial need for a school bond to address infrastructure issues. This commitment was vividly demonstrated in a pivotal town hall organized by the Palos Verdes Council of PTAs, where Muratsuchi engaged with high school students expressing concerns about dilapidated bathrooms at Peninsula High School and Palos Verdes High School. Responding swiftly to their plea, he successfully secured $500,000 for bathroom renovations in 2022. This dynamic interaction not only highlights Muratsuchi’s dedication to addressing critical needs but also underscores his commitment to listening and taking decisive action in response to the community’s concerns. Family Traditions and Love for the Ocean: Beyond the legislative halls, Muratsuchi’s personal connection to the ocean reflects his diverse background. Hailing from Okinawa, Japan, where his father served as a United States Army civilian, Muratsuchi shares a profound love for the beaches and surfing. In 2018, he introduced and passed a bill that declared surfing as California’s official sport, celebrating both the sport itself and the vibrant coastal communities like Palos Verdes. The Challenges of Public Service: Navigating the complexities of public service in divisive times is no easy feat, but Muratsuchi maintains a positive outlook. He acknowledges the differing opinions but remains resolute in working diligently to represent Palos Verdes and the South Bay. While he recognizes the toll his public service takes on his family, especially his wife, he remains a true believer in the importance of community representation. Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi’s narrative is one of love, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Palos Verdes. From his advocacy for education to his efforts in securing funding and addressing critical infrastructure needs, Muratsuchi emerges as a genuine champion for this beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula and the surrounding areas. As he continues to navigate the intricate landscape of public service, his love for Palos Verdes remains the guiding force, making him an invaluable representative for the community he wholeheartedly serves.

50 Years of Trojan Spirit The Trojan League of the South Bay Written by M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o s co u r t e s y o f T h e Tro j a n L ea g u e o f t h e S o u t h B ay
The Trojan League of the South Bay (TLSB) proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of connecting USC alumni, nurturing future Trojans, and spreading USC pride across the South Bay. Founded in 1974 by a group of nine passionate alumni who first gathered at the Bel-Air Bay Club, TLSB has grown into a vital network that supports not only each other but also students, families, and the broader USC community. Back in 1974, TLSB launched its first major event, the Forum, welcoming South Bay high school juniors and seniors to learn about USC life. As the event grew, so did its reach, opening doors for younger students and their families to explore USC’s academic programs, social opportunities, and financial aid options. By 1991, TLSB was hosting campus events at USC, offering students and parents an immersive experience with admissions workshops and meetand-greets. TLSB also held special sessions for local high school counselors, equipping them to guide hundreds of students in making informed college choices. TLSB’s commitment doesn’t stop at information sharing. In 1984, the League began fundraising for USC, supporting scholarships, campus projects, and library upgrades. In the 1990s, they launched an artful fundraising tradition, selling hand-painted ceramics crafted by Palos Verdes artist Lisa Van Nortwick. This successful initiative led to the creation of an endowment fund that, along with annual member contributions, still supports USC students from the South Bay. Just last year, TLSB awarded 19 scholarships, continuing their long tradition of making college more accessible for promising students. Beyond its service, TLSB keeps Trojan spirit alive through community activities, from themed gatherings and general meetings to the annual Alumni
Day of Service, where members volunteer locally to give back to the South Bay. Current President Sylvia Mehl guides TLSB’s nearly 200 members in fostering a lifelong connection to USC and creating a legacy of dedication and pride. “We’re thrilled to celebrate the past 50 years of TLSB,” says Patti Johnson, co-chair of the recent 50th celebration. “Our members have been making a difference for USC and in the South Bay for decades, and we look forward to continuing this legacy for many years to come.” As TLSB commemorates its golden anniversary, it honors five decades of Trojan pride, service, and scholarship. With a legacy that grows brighter each year, TLSB’s impact promises to extend far into the future, inspiring generations of Trojans to come.

Otherworld PV’s Indie Darlings Rec Hall’s New Album Takes Fans to New Heights Written by Melan i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o s b y Jas o n Ya m a m o t o
Palos Verdes indie rock trio, Rec Hall, returns with their latest album Otherworld, making waves across the music scene. Known for their beachside, coastal vibe, the band featuring John Barry on guitar and vocals, Lance Meliota on drums, and Ben Tyrrell on guitar and bass has built a strong following with catchy singles like “She Doesn’t Get It” and “Pontiac.” Now, they’re adding a bold new chapter to their sound, blending dreamy indie rock with an 80s intergalactic twist that will leave fans craving more. Their new EP, Otherworld, was released on November 15th, 2024 and features the hit single “How Long” along with new tracks like “Bored With My Feet” and “Olive.” It’s a sonic journey that dives deep beneath the surface, as Tyrrell describes: “We wanted Otherworld to feel like slipping into a world of glowing colors and overlooked life, where sound itself feels alive.” This evolution from their 2023 EP Localism shows a new, daring side to the band, complete with shimmering guitars, high-energy drums, and lyrics that feel like stories from another dimension. Fresh off a whirlwind tour with Beach Weather, Rec Hall has packed this album with the raw energy of live shows and a touch of introspective lyricism that fans love. Their new sound is richer, weirder, and ready to take you somewhere new. If you’re looking to explore indie rock with a twist, Otherworld is the ticket. Buckle up, PV, Rec Hall is going interstellar!

Meet Maverick and Koa, the Shikiya Family’s beloved fur boys. Steve and Sharon Shikiya, empty nesters, have filled their Palos Verdes home with love, laughter, and the delightful company of their two beloved dogs, Maverick and Koa. As Steve and Sharon put it, they “can’t imagine life without their fur babies,” and it’s easy to see why. These two dogs-our PV Pets of the month-bring a unique blend of personality and joy into the Shikiya household, making every day brighter and full of surprises. Maverick (Bichon-Poodle): The Little Firecracker with a Cat-Like Personality Twelve years ago, Sharon attended a Vistas meeting and spotted Maverick, an 8-week-old BichonPoodle mix with an undeniable charm. It was love at first sight. The Shikiyas took him home, and since then, Maverick has made his mark as the household’s “little firecracker.” Despite being small in size, his personality is anything but! With a personality that combines the independence of a cat with a dog’s love for companionship, Maverick brings an intriguing dynamic to the home. He enjoys his alone time, often grooming himself with the precision of a feline. But Maverick is also incredibly affectionate, always coming around when you least expect it for a cuddle or some quiet moments together. His quirky blend of independence and warmth has endeared him deeply to Steve and Sharon, making him their steadfast companion through the years.
Kai, Ryan, Sharon and Steve Shikiya with Maverick and Koa
Koa (Golden Retriever): The Big Cuddle Bug with a Heart of Gold Four-year-old Koa entered the Shikiya family in a rather unusual way. After several unsuccessful attempts to adopt a dog from a Golden Retriever rescue center, Steve and Sharon sought out a service dog training center in San Diego. Koa, a Golden Retriever, had been training as a service dog but didn’t quite make the cut at four months, a twist of fate that the Shikiyas consider their luckiest break. Since joining the family, Koa has proven himself to be a gentle giant, weighing in at a hefty 70 pounds yet convinced he’s a lap dog! His heart is as big as his size, and his love for people, especially children, knows no bounds. In fact, Koa is currently in training to become a certified therapy dog.

ACelebrating Century of Stories: a 100-Year-Old Palos Verdes Home Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n Photos by Ed M c C l u re
Nestled beside the historic Malaga Cove Library, the Cartwright House is one of the oldest houses on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, standing as a centuryold witness to California’s coastal evolution. Built in 1924, this remarkable residence was only the seventh permitted on the Peninsula, an enduring symbol of the area’s early vision. Designed by renowned architects David J. Winter and Loyall F. Watson, the home reflects their dedication to harmonizing architecture with nature. Winter and Watson were celebrated for crafting homes that embraced their surroundings. With its adobe hues, red-tiled roof, and elegant archways, the house is a perfect example of classic Spanish Revival design, surrounded by mature gardens and views that capture the natural beauty of the coastline. This home’s story is unique, woven into the Peninsula’s rich history and the family legacy. Beth Carr grew up in the house which she now owns with her husband Marshall. In the 1920s, it served not only as a family residence but also as a doctor’s office, welcoming patients into a dedicated space on the lower level. This downstairs office, with its private entrance and original fixtures, has been preserved to retain its early 20th-century character, offering a glimpse into the family’s roots in the community. Nearby, a detached apartment still features heritage tiles and an original “ice-box” refrigerator, a relic from the days when the iceman made deliveries. These charming elements make the home a living time capsule, capturing a simpler era when the Peninsula was quieter, its roads unpaved, and its architecture shaped by the Spanish influences that have come to define Palos Verdes. The Carr family’s dedication to preserving these unique details has allowed this home to maintain its historic integrity. Today, the Carr family home remains a stunning example of Palos Verdes’ architectural heritage, preserving a connection to the 1920s that contrasts with the modern homes now dotting the coastline. Each corner of this residence reflects the commitment of its architects to design with artistry and respect for the landscape, while also representing the family’s care and dedication to their home’s legacy. As one of the few homes of its age still standing, it captures the essence of old Palos Verdes, linking the past with the present in a way that few homes can. For the Carr family, this home is not just a place to live; it’s a legacy, a piece of history that carries forward the spirit and heritage of the Peninsula.
