Issue No. 51

Dear Palos Verdes, The summer is flying by, and we are thrilled to bring you the August issue of Palos Verdes Magazine! This month, we have some great stories lined up, including a heartfelt tribute to the beautiful and historic area of Portuguese Bend. As many of you know, the recent accelerated land movement in this area has caused significant challenges for homeowners. With SoCalGas’s recent shutoff affecting 135 residents, we send our thoughts and hope for a swift resolution to this ongoing challenge. In addition to our tribute, don’t miss our packed community calendar filled with exciting events happening around Palos Verdes. For our fellow pet lovers, we have a delightful section called “Dog Days of Summer,” featuring the touching story of Enzo, a lovable dog rescued from the dog meat trade and brought to the United States. We thank Mary Jo Hazard for sharing this heartwarming story. And as always, don’t forget to check out the many fun events highlighted in our “Around Town” section. Enjoy the issue, and have a wonderful rest of your summer!

Portuguese Bend Historic & Beautiful Photos by Erik Jay

In light of recent developments concerning the land movement in the Portuguese Bend area of Rancho Palos Verdes on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, PV Magazine would like to honor the residents and celebrate the beauty and history of the Portuguese Bend community. On Monday July 29, SoCalGas indefinitely cut service to 135 homes in this area. The accelerated land movement is unprecedented, and we extend our best wishes to our fellow community members in the area.

wayfarers chapel

Wayfarers Chapel, a National Historic Landmark designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. (Lloyd Wright), closed to the public on February 15, 2024, due to accelerated land movement in the Rancho Palos Verdes area. To prevent further irreparable damage to the chapel’s structure and materials, it was determined that immediate deconstruction was the safest and most viable preservation action. The chapel is being carefully disassembled, with each piece catalogued and documented. Efforts are being made to preserve as much of the original materials as practicable, and all components are being relocated to a temporary safe location until they can be reassembled. On June 26, 2024 According to Wayfares Chapel,”the chapel disassembly is near completion with the redwood bents removed. Additional historic elements of the chapel will carefully be disassembled in the coming weeks. The Wayfarers community is committed to preserving the historic chapel and giving it a resilient future.”

Patrick Sean O’Malley in his studio

PETS IN PAINT:

Southern Califonia Artist Captures Furry Family Members on Canvas Written by D i a n e Kr i e ge r a n d P h o t o g ra p h ed b y P h i l i c i a E n d e l m a n

Patrick Sean O’Malley was born and raised in southern California. He attended North High in Torrance and then majored in Studio Art and Art History at Humboldt State University. Sean began painting residential art murals after college, and then branched out to paint murals for larger companies such as Federal Express. In 2006, Sean was commissioned to paint his first mural at Torrance Memorial Medical Center; four scenic wooden panels to be placed around the cafeteria outside seating area (more panels were added later). Since the cafeteria panels worked out so well, he also painted a similarly scenic, 78-foot temporary construction wall outside of TCU. Many more TMMC art murals followed, including X-Ray Room 8, Escort Services, Pre-Op Holding, Main Lobby Waiting Area, and

Pediatrics. One of Sean’s most infamous projects began in 2007 when he painted 22 dog portraits for the TMMC Canine Pet Visitation Program. More canine pet portraits have been added throughout the years. Outside of TMMC, Sean has painted many pet portraits including both dogs and cats. He hopes to be able to expand his pet portrait projects to include horses. Actually, any and all pets would be fun! Sean is also an accomplished musician and bass player and he and his wife, Melissa, are in several bands. They have four children and reside in southern California.

From Survival to Service Enzo’s Heartwarming Journey Written by Mary Jo H a z a rd Photos by Dog Ins p i red P h o t o g ra p h y

Jennifer Giacalone was scrolling through Nextdoor when she noticed a sweet little face topped off by pricked ears and big brown eyes peering back at her. “We already had two dogs,” she said. “We were happy being a two-dog family, but when I looked into his eyes, I knew he was mine. I sent my husband the dog’s picture in a text. “Can we get this sweet boy?” “Yes,” he immediately replied. Jennifer, a financial adviser at Hazard Financial, and Mark, an engineer at Boeing, live in Rancho Palos Verdes with their son, Trent, and Dani and Fiona, their two rescue dogs. Aika, the dog on Nextdoor, was a Korean Jindo, and available through DoVE, a dog rescue in Los Angeles. According to Claudia Bright, co-founder/ CEO of the DoVE Project, the non-profit organization rescues dogs from other parts of the world where they’re bred for the dog meat trade, and brings them to the United States for adoption. The Giacalones submitted an application, had a background check, participated in a Zoom interview with Aika’s foster parents, and were approved. Things moved quickly. Two days later, with Dani one of their rescue dogs, they met Taylor, a 22 | PVMagazine | August | 2024

DoVe Project volunteer, and Aika at a dog park near their home. The visit went well, The dogs got along and the next day the Giacalones brought Aika home. They changed his name to Enzo to give him a fresh start. In 2018, when Enzo was a puppy, he and his four siblings lived in deplorable conditions on a Dog Meat farm in Namyangju, South Korea. Their house was a small rusty wire cage set just above the ground. Summers they baked. Winters they froze. Water bowls were scarce. The dogs ate foul leftovers, boiled peppers, onions, and chilies. When they were hungry, they forced it down-even though it made them sick. Fortunately, when Enzo was 4-5 months old, the DoVE Project removed him from the farm and placed him with their rescue partner CARE. Five years later, he was brought to RUN, DoVE’s rescue partner’s boarding facility in 2023 where he was closely accessed and evaluated physically and behaviorally. From there, he and a flight volunteer flew directly from Seoul to LAX. One month later he was adopted by the Giacalones. “He was a very nice dog,” Jennifer said. “But we knew from his background, that he’d been through a bad time.”

Enzo had his own special place at Camp RennerVation in Katie’s Quiet Cabin where he focused on campers who were stressed. The kids used the cabin to get away, read, or just settle down and have quiet time. Enzo spent about two hours in the cabin every day, listening to the kids read, watching them color, and enjoying them stroking his thick white fur. He’d close his eyes in contentment and lean into their gentle touch. One of Enzo’s favorite things to do at camp was to meander leisurely over to the meadow, find a comfortable spot, and watch the kids play games. He’d sit there with a smile on his face, head held high, ears perked, ready to comfort anyone who felt left out or didn’t want to play. Enzo’s been on an incredible journey since he left the Dog Meat Farm in South Korea, it’s amazing to witness the unconditional love and happiness he bestows on others in need. Jeremy Renner agrees. “Enzo was a magnet that united our campers everywhere he went. He’s a star!” You can follow Enzo’s journey on Instagram @EnzosIncredibleJourney. For more information: RennervationFoundation.org and Dove-Project.org Thank you to Mary Jo Hazard for this touching story. Mary Jo Hazard is a retired MFT, the author of four children’s books, a comingof-age novel, and is a contributor to Palos Verdes Peninsula News. She and her husband live in Rancho Palos Verdes.

When Enzo moved in with the Giacalones, his emotions ran the gamut of excitement, fear, and anxiety. Eventually, he bonded with them but it took almost a year to for him to relax and feel at home. “He was overwhelmed and scared,” Jennifer said. “He was drawn to small spaces like our living room fireplace. When we realized it was his safe place, we moved his bed in there. It’s still one of his favorite places in the house.” Gradually, Enzo felt more and more at home. One day Jennifer noticed him sleeping on the family room couch. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture in the Giacalone house, but Enzo looked so happy and peaceful, Jennifer let him stay. “Since Enzo is very calm and well-behaved,” she explained. “We’ve let him dictate where he needs to be. We want him to feel loved and safe.” Because of Enzo’s calm demeanor, the Giacalones knew Enzo would make a good therapy dog, and they thought exposing him to new people would benefit him as well.. Enzo aced the ATD (Alliance of Therapy Dogs) tests and was certified. The first place Jennifer and Enzo volunteered was a local nursing home. “It was quiet and he seemed to like it,” Jennifer said. “There weren’t a lot of residents--it was like visiting f riends. The dog enjoyed the outing and it was great seeing the positive impact Enzo had on everyone.” Next, Jennifer and Enzo visited South High. The school wanted to reduce the amount of student anxiety during testing. Enzo settled in right away. The students crowded around waiting for a turn to pet him. After a few of their visits, one of the teachers had her two dogs registered with ATD. She’s retiring soon and wants to focus on decreasing student anxiety instead of causing it. Later, Jennifer discovered Camp RennerVation on the Incline Village’s Facebook site. Jeremy Renner established the RennerVation Foundation in 2023. According to the foundation’s website the non-profit organization is dedicated to serving children in foster care and at-risk youth by providing them with a safe haven and targeted programs to develop their skills, confidence, and opportunities. Jennifer contacted Kym Renner and asked if they were looking for a therapy dog. Jennifer explained how Enzo and the campers had similar backgrounds and how he could help. Before long, Enzo was approved and on his way to Lake Tahoe. During the first week of July, 2024, Renner’s first camp in Lake Tahoe welcomed more than 100 foster kids—all from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Giacalones were a bit concerned when Enzo arrived at camp because it was a new experience and he gets easily intimidated. At first, Enzo was wary, but when the kids realized the dog was stressed and needed a minute, they understood that he was like them, and they tried to make him feel better. With their help, he relaxed and warmed up.

From Art to Healing Written by M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

Kitty Garaczi’s journey to Sacred Therapy exemplifies the transformative power of selfawareness and holistic healing. Her dedication to serving the Palos Verdes community and beyond offers a path to greater well-being and a deeper connection to oneself. Spirituality has been integral to Garaczi’s life since she was eight years old, though she has only recently shared it with the world. While painting brought her fulfillment, it often felt solitary. A persistent question emerged: “How can I be of service to the world and the people around me?” This introspective journey led her to open Prismatify Sacred Therapy in Rolling Hills Estates. Prismatify Sacred Therapy helps clients explore their being, release stagnant energy, and awaken their true potential. Through compassionate, intuitive guidance, it uncovers root causes, dissolves energetic blocks, and achieves balance and harmony, providing profound healing and self-empowerment for physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. Tired of trying different approaches, Garaczi decided to create her own method. By integrating her learnings and continuously working on herself, she developed Sacred Therapy, a method that truly works. “Rather than fitting everyone into a predetermined box, I always focus on the person in front of me,” she explains. “Everyone deserves a uniquely tailored problem-solving approach.” Garaczi’s work is divided into two main parts. The first encompasses holistic healing ideas, including Theta healing, Reiki, Chakra balancing, and sound bath therapy, all aimed at promoting overall wellness and balance. The second part is sacred therapy, a revolutionary method of healing, self-awareness, and personal transformation. Clients first delve into their inner world. “You will never know who you are until your shadow meets the light,” Garaczi explains. The process then moves on to treat the body, releasing stuck emotions and balancing chakras to build a healthier self. This holistic combination addresses both the mind and body’s needs. Previously living in Torrance with her husband and son, the Palos Verdes Peninsula had always been Garaczi’s vacation haven, a refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Its scenic beauty reminded her of her homeland, Hungary, with the added charm of spectacular ocean views. Today, she feels fortunate to work in this serene environment, while her son, Nimrod, attends school in Rolling Hills Estates. Nimrod, turning six

this summer, is bilingual, speaking both Hungarian and English. “He is my ultimate teacher, guide, and source of happiness,” Garaczi shares. Garaczi emphasizes the importance of slowing down in our fast-paced world. “We rush from one event to another, and every moment of our lives is scheduled. Honestly, when was the last time you took a deep breath? When did you last admire a flower or the ocean while driving?” she asks. She believes everyone needs to consciously pause during their day. “It could be liberating to admit to ourselves that we’re stressed, sad, or nervous. We don’t have to share it with anyone, but let’s allow ourselves to feel it,” she advises. Take Garaczi’s advice and embrace your fears to discover the most authentic version of yourself.

Protect your brain and heart with knowledge, preventive care, and healthy habits Written by M e l i ss a B ea n S t e r z i c k

A stroke can cause long-term brain damage, disability, and even death. It’s a serious medical condition affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. However, many strokes can be prevented through controlling health issues and adopting lifestyle changes. Lorena Layrisse Landaeta, MD, a Torrance Memorial Physician Network primary care and geriatric specialist, advises seniors to reduce their risks by understanding and caring for their overall health. Understand Your Risks Some risk factors for strokes are modifiable, and some are not. Individuals should be aware of nonmodifiable risk factors, including age, race, ethnicity, gender, and genetics. For instance, strokes are the third leading cause of death for women, and Black, Latino, and Native American communities are at higher risk. Controlling treatable risk factors is crucial for stroke prevention. Major modifiable risk factors include hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, smoking, atrial fibrillation, alcohol and substance use, obesity, and physical inactivity. Get Preventive Care Regular medical checkups are crucial, especially for seniors at higher risk of stroke. Weight management, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar monitoring, along with medication adjustments, help control conditions leading to stroke. “Your doctor should check your blood pressure at every visit, and ideally, your cholesterol should be measured once a year,” says Dr. Landaeta. It’s essential to control these risk factors to prevent strokes.

Maintain Your Weight with a Healthy Diet and Regular Exercise Diet and exercise are fundamental to good health. Dr. Landaeta recommends a weight loss program, seeing a nutritionist, or working with a personal trainer. A healthy lifestyle involves nutritious foods and regular physical activity. “Exercise, exercise, exercise and follow a healthy diet with high intake of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fish. Limit animal protein, substituting with fish or lean poultry,” she advises. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, five days a week. Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption. For diabetics, consult your doctor about medications to promote weight loss. Be Aware of the Warning Signs “In the health care world, we like to say ‘time is brain.’ If you wait too long to seek medical attention, it may be too late for treatment,” says Dr. Landaeta. The American Stroke Association’s B.E.F.A.S.T plan helps spot warning signs of stroke. Immediate treatment is key to reducing damage and increasing survival. Local Resources South Bay residents have additional safeguards in place. Torrance Memorial is a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, prepared for stroke-related medical problems and serious stroke events. The hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for its dedication to providing the best treatment based on nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

Important Numbers to Remember Blood Pressure: Normal: 120/80, Elevated: >129/80, Stage 1 Hypertension: >130/89, Stage 2 Hypertension: ≥140/90 Cholesterol: Elevated LDL without cardiovascular disease: ≥190 mg/dL, with history of stroke or MI: <55 mg/dL Blood Sugar: Hemoglobin A1c of 5.7–6.5 indicates prediabetes, >6.5 indicates diabetes

Lorena Layrisse Landaeta, MD, practices at Torrance Memorial Physician Network Palos Verdes, 602 Deep Valley Dr., Suite 300, Rolling Hills Estates. She can be reached at 310-517-4692.

Omnilore:

Learning and Fun in Retirement Written by M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

A visit to a local gallery to meet with working artists and do an art

When Leslie Criswell retired from her career project of our own as a trial lawyer and high school law teacher, she knew she wasn’t ready to stop learning. That’s why she joined Omnilore Learning-In-Retirement, a vibrant community of lifelong learners in the South Bay. With 175 members, Omnilore is a nonprofit organization where everyone volunteers to run the organization. Their mission is simple: to provide intellectual stimulation, shared inquiry, and social engagement for seniors. Onilore is a learning-in-retirement community where members plan and lead study discussion groups. There are no tests or grades, just pure learning. Membership is open to anyone aged 50+ who seeks intellectual stimulation. For an annual fee of $250, members gain access to a wide array of Lifestyle creative writing group learning opportunities, social interactions, and fun activities. Criswell, a Palos Verdes resident, has always been a lifelong learner. She finds Omnilore perfect for her. Members meet twice a month to discuss topics they want to learn about. Before COVID, they met in person, and now they have adapted to a hybrid model. Meetings take place at the Beach Cities Health District, where they explore various topics based on the agenda for the day. One of the things Criswell loves about Omnilore is the diversity of classes. Each trimester, members receive a list of about 25 class options and choose what interests them. The Curriculum Committee, with input from members, selects the classes. They cover everything from comedy and historical figures to science and literature. They even had a three-month session on Mark Twain, complete with a creative presentation by a member dressed as Twain. Group field trip to the Nixon Library The classes are interactive and engaging. Empowering Neurodiverse Couples

Marriage Therapy for Neurodiverse Couples

Neurodiversity is not a limitation but simply a different way to view the world. Bridgitte Green brings a wealth of experience as a foster parent and former Los Angeles County Probation Officer to her practice, providing her with unique insights into the struggles faced by many individuals who lack the necessary skills to navigate life. Often, these struggles stem from pain, misunderstanding, and a lack of knowledge about relationships, the world, and self-emotions. Challenges and Strengths Neurodiverse individuals—those whose brains function differently from what is typically considered “normal” or “neurotypical”—often face difficulties in identifying the emotions of others. This includes individuals with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other cognitive variations. They may miss social cues that others easily recognize, leading to misunderstandings and being mislabeled as odd or lacking empathy. Bridgitte helps them understand these cues and develop strategies to address them effectively. Supporting Neurodiverse Relationships In relationships where one partner is neurodiverse, Bridgitte emphasizes active listening and clear communication. She educates both partners on neurodiversity, covering sensory issues, flexible thinking, problem-solving, and self-awareness of triggers and individual needs. Each partner is encouraged to have a robust support system. Parental Self-Care Parents of neurodivergent children must prioritize self-care to maintain emotional stability. Bridgitte advises continuous learning, patience, and understanding that what worked yesterday may not work today. She stresses the importance of building a support system that includes schools and other professionals. Goals for Couples Many couples seek Bridgitte’s assistance to improve communication and connection. Often, resentment, grief, and pride prevent reconnection, leaving partners overwhelmed and unwilling to reach out. Bridgitte’s work focuses on rebuilding trust and fostering a healthier relationship dynamic.

Improving Communication For both neurotypical and neurodiverse couples, effective communication begins with listening for understanding. Bridgitte encourages curiosity and asking clarifying questions, such as “What did you mean by that?” or “What do you need for more understanding?” This approach helps bridge gaps and fosters better understanding. Navigating Neurodiversity and Sexuality Neurodivergent individuals often experience sexual development differently, which can be challenging for their partners to understand without discussion. Bridgitte helps couples navigate this complex area by addressing sensory sensitivities, communication differences, mental health, medication issues, and recognizing partner cues. Education and awareness are crucial for both partners. Creating a Safe Space Providing a nonjudgmental, safe space is essential for all clients. Bridgitte ensures that her clients feel free to express and explore their emotions and needs, building rapport at their own pace. She emphasizes respect, confidentiality, and the importance of clients feeling safe in her sessions. Empowering neurodiverse couples and individuals to thrive through specialized counseling and workshops, Bridgitte Green offers compassionate, insightful support where neurodiverse couples can thrive in understanding and connection. If you have any questions about Neurodiverse couples or want to know more, you can schedule a consultation with Bridgitte Green.

MEET DAZU

PV PET OF THE MONTH AN LAX PUP PARTICIPANT

Travelers at LAX can find relaxation amid the chaos of travel thanks to the Pets Unstressing Passengers (PUP) program. This initiative brings therapy dogs to interact with passengers, offering comfort and information. Among the PUPs is Dazu, a six-year-old Standard Poodle from Palos Verdes, accompanied by his owner, Merin Dahlerbruch. PVM: Why did you adopt Dazu? Merin Dahlerbruch: I’ve always had Standard Poodles. After our last dog passed, I wanted a dog that could join the PUP program. I found the perfect puppy from a breeder in Vista, California, and we’ve been training since he was three months old. PVM: What’s the story behind Dazu’s name? MD: We named our previous dog Xian after a city from our honeymoon in China. We continued this tradition and named our new dog Dazu after a historical village we loved in China. PVM: What’s unique and special about Dazu? MD: Besides being an LAX PUP, Dazu has his AKC Good Citizen title, two trick titles, and is certified with Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He loves to “speak” on command and thrives on learning, which is why we take trick training and agility classes. PVM: What do you like best about your pet? MD: I love his sweet nature and human-like eyes. Volunteering at LAX together is wonderful. He brings joy to many people and helps de-stress them. Many are surprised to see his “PET ME” vest, and he has a collector’s card we give out as a souvenir. PVM: Any funny stories to share? MD: Dazu has a favorite stuffed turkey/rooster he takes to bed every night. If we’re up late, he grabs it and stares us down to signal it’s bedtime. Despite his training, he sometimes leaps for hotdogs or counter surfs for pizza. PVM: How spoiled is your pet? MD: Doing therapy dog work is like getting a few hours of massage! Dazu is living his best life, joining us for lunches, playdates, photo shoots, and has a great collection of outfits. PVM: What else do you want the community to know about Dazu? MD: Dazu has led to many fun experiences. He’s featured in an upcoming book on working dogs, filmed a movie last year, and starred in another movie filmed on the PV bluffs. You’ll also see him in a National Target commercial soon. He has modeled for Healthy Spot, been photographed by notable photographers, and walked the runway at LA Fashion Week in a custom outfit. Follow Dazu’s adventures on Instagram @PoodleGoesShopping.
