Issue No. 56

Dear Palos Verdes Community, As we turn the page on another year, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible community for making 2024 an unforgettable journey. Together, we’ve shared countless inspiring stories, celebrated milestones, and deepened our connection to this beautiful Peninsula we call home. This past year, Palos Verdes Magazine had the privilege of highlighting the people, organizations, and events that make our community so special. From the vibrant Peninsula Parade of Lights pre-party, where we witnessed the dedication of our selfless community leaders, to countless features on local philanthropies and city initiatives, every story has been a testament to the heart and soul of Palos Verdes. I am immensely grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us to share your stories. Your unwavering support has fueled our mission to celebrate the Peninsula’s unique spirit, and I couldn’t be more proud of the connections we’ve fostered and the moments we’ve captured together. As we step into 2025, my wish for each of you is peace, love, and a renewed appreciation for the extraordinary community we are privileged to live in. We look forward to discovering new stories, meeting inspiring individuals, and continuing to shine a light on the people and places that make Palos Verdes so special. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with story ideas or suggestions for Community Members we should feature in the coming year. Together, let’s make 2025 another year to remember! WAYFARERSCHAPEL

Photos by Erik Jay

In our February issue, we featured this beloved Rancho Palos Verdes’ iconic Chapel and it becoming the Peninsula’s first National Historic landmark. As of June 2024, Wayfarers Chapel was fully disassembled to safeguard it from ongoing land movement that threatened its structural integrity. The beloved glass Chapel, a beacon of architectural and spiritual beauty, had closed indefinitely earlier this year following heavy rains and ground instability. Efforts are now focused on preserving the Chapel’s legacy while addressing the challenges posed by nature.

Peninsula NCL Holiday Tea The Ryan family home transformed into a winter wonderland on Sunday, December 8th, as over 500 guests gathered to honor a year of dedication and service by the Peninsula Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL). The Los Angeles Challenge Holiday Celebration Brunch

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, The Los Angeles Challenge hosted a Holiday Celebration Brunch honoring their students, families and donors. Over 75 people attended the event which was held at the Pacific Unitarian Church in Rancho Palos Verdes. A lovely brunch was served and attendees heard from a panel of current students about their experiences in the program. The Gordana Swanson scholarship was awarded to a deserving senior with funds to be applied towards college expenses. Founded in 2002 by Palos Verdes residents Gordana Swanson and Greg Alessandra, the Los Angeles Challenge (LAC) is a charitable organization with the goal of providing economically disadvantaged children equal opportunities to succeed. Since inception, over 400 scholarships have been granted for selected K-12 students to attend the independent school of their choice. However, the program goes beyond writing checks for tuition, as it’s also designed to involve the student’s parents to ensure comprehensive academic and developmental progress. Another benefit, each LAC student receives one-on-one mentoring throughout the year on their academic progress, as well as planning for the following year. LAC relies on donations from the community to fund scholarships and support programs. Please go to www.losangeleschallenge.org to learn more and make a donation.

A Family-Led Vision for Art in the South Bay P h o t o g ra p h y b y Jo h n D e Te m p l e

The VEFA Team: Gabriel Anderson (Archivist/Registrar), Anna Kim (Creative Director), Dr. Joseph Anderson (Owner), Kath Anderson (Owner), Delia Cabral (Senior Advisor/Lead Curator), Jonathan Anderson (Gallery Director/Assistant Curator), George Anderson (Associate Director), Suzi Paine (Director of Events), Joey Anderson (Director of Exhibitions)

VEFA Gallery, established by the Anderson family, has quickly emerged as a dynamic force in the South Bay’s art scene. Rooted in the Palos Verdes community, the Andersons bring a deep appreciation for local culture and a global perspective to their gallery. Their passion for fostering creativity and connection is evident in every aspect of VEFA’s design and programming, which aims to unite diverse artists around today’s most relevant topics. At the heart of VEFA Gallery’s success is Delia Cabral, its Senior Advisor and Lead Curator. With over two decades of experience as a curator, art writer, and strategic advisor, Cabral has shaped the gallery into a platform for artistic innovation and community engagement. Her global expertise and thoughtful approach drive VEFA’s inclusive and educational programming, which resonates with both casual visitors and seasoned collectors alike. Recently, we sat down with Delia Cabral to explore the vision behind VEFA Gallery. Her insights reveal the thoughtful and ambitious goals that make this gallery an inspiring cultural hub in the South Bay.

30 | PVMagazine | January | 2025

Delia Cabral

Q: Can you share how your involvement with VEFA Gallery began?

Delia Cabral: It all started with a suggestion from my lawyer, Michael, to join a Zoom call with an LA based family who was looking to open an art gallery in The South Bay. I initially agreed to offer advice and point them in the right direction, as I often do. But as we spoke, I realized there were so many synergies between us—our families, our experiences, even shared moments at Rat Beach. It was as though the universe was pushing us together. Since then, we’ve grown into an extended family, working relentlessly and passionately to build something extraordinary. Q: How do you balance your international work and your role at VEFA Gallery?

Delia Cabral: It’s a 24/7 commitment. I split my time between the UK and Los Angeles, leveraging my international contacts to bring opportunities here. I’m also pursuing another master’s degree in curation and ceramics in the UK, so my days are packed with studies, art theory, Zoom meetings, and gallery work. I love this dynamic life—it allows me to stay connected globally while nurturing the gallery locally. Q: What has the response to the VEFA Gallery been like so far?

Delia Cabral: It’s been overwhelming in the best way. We had 600 people show up to our opening, and the demand has exceeded all expectations. Collectors, museums, and even my old contacts from the art world have been blown away by what we’ve accomplished. The gallery itself is a work of art, and it’s thrilling to see how it resonates with everyone who visits. Q: Can you tell us about your approach to creating the gallery experience?

Delia Cabral: The gallery isn’t just a venue for showcasing art—it’s a masterpiece in its own right. Every detail, from the thoughtfully curated educational programs to the immersive exhibits, reflects a commitment to innovation and storytelling. With a nod to art history, we delve into bold contemporary themes, like the interplay between digital consciousness, AI, and surrealism. It’s about redefining boundaries and crafting an experience that lingers in the memory.

John DeTemple, Jeff Ho and Delia Cabral

Q: What’s next for VEFA Gallery?

Delia Cabral: We have big plans! I’m exploring the possibility of bringing some of our exhibitions to London, continuing to expand our international network. Locally, we’re diving into ambitious projects, including surrealism-inspired exhibitions tied to the centennial of the Surrealist Manifesto. We’re also exploring how art intersects with modern realities like NFTs and AI. The future is bright, and I’m excited to see how the gallery evolves. Q: What makes VEFA Gallery stand out in the South Bay?

Delia Cabral: VEFA Gallery has transformed what used to be an art desert into an oasis. We’ve brought a level of artistry and innovation that’s rare, not just in the South Bay but even in Los Angeles. The gallery draws visitors from all over, including major museums and collectors. It’s become a cultural hub, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve created. Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring curators or gallery owners?

Delia Cabral: Follow your passion but know that it takes relentless hard work. Be open to collaboration and never stop learning. In the art world, you don’t have to be everything for everyone, but always aim to guide people along their path. It’s about creating opportunities and connections that elevate art and its impact on the world.

Q: How do collaborations play a role in the gallery’s success?

Delia Cabral: Collaboration is key. We’ve spent years building relationships with organizations, artists, and collectors, and now we’re bringing them into the gallery. These connections enrich our exhibitions and events, creating a vibrant community around the gallery. It’s a team effort, from the curatorial work to the support from family and friends.
