Editor’s Letter
Issue No. 50
Dear Palos Verdes Community, As I sit down to write this letter, my heart is filled with gratitude and joy. It feels like just yesterday we launched the very first issue of Palos Verdes Magazine in January 2020. Now, here we are, celebrating our 50th issue, and I can hardly believe how far we’ve come. From the outset, our mission was to create a publication that truly reflected the beauty, spirit, and vibrancy of our beloved community. What we found was that the real magic lies within each of you—our readers, contributors, and supporters—who have embraced this magazine with open arms and hearts. Your stories, your passions, and your unwavering support have been at the heart of every issue. Living in this wonderful community, I am continually inspired by the incredible people who call Palos Verdes home. From the stunning coastal vistas to the Peninsula’s rich history, there is an endless well of beauty and inspiration to draw from. Each issue has been a labor of love, a tribute to the place we all cherish so deeply. As I reflect on this journey, it hasn’t been easy. In the beginning, I was designing, writing, and publishing the magazine on my own. It was a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience. Today, I am blessed to have a wonderful, supportive team that shares the same passion and dedication. Together, we have grown each month through our newsletters, social media, and website, continually striving to bring you the best of Palos Verdes. In this 50th issue, we share a snippet of some of our earliest stories, reflecting on how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown. I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to our founding sponsors who have continue to support us and make this possible: Providence Little Company of Mary, Butler Fishman, Accardo Real Estate, Peninsula Physical Therapy, Trotter Orthodontics, Walk & Wag, Great American Seafood Market and Lunada Consulting & Design, Inc. Without their support and the continued support of all our new sponsors, this magazine would not exist. They have been the pillars that have sustained us, and for that, we are eternally grateful. As we celebrate this significant milestone, we also look to the future with excitement and anticipation. As our print production costs continue to rise, we humbly ask for more sponsorships to help us navigate these challenges. We have so many exciting announcements and new ventures planned for the next 50 issues, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making these past fifty issues possible. Here’s to many more stories to tell, memories to create, and milestones to celebrate together. With deepest gratitude,

introducing
The Palos Verdes Community Archives Written by Ci n d y D o n n e l l y
There is something new at the Palos Verdes Library District Local History Center, and you do not need to visit the library to start enjoying it! The Palos Verdes Community Archives has replaced the former Digital Repository and is a new platform that is more inclusive and for the first time allows the community to interact and contribute by uploading photos or adding recollections to already posted materials. In other words, if you come across a historical photo or newspaper article on the site and have memories to add, or can identify a person pictured, there is a way for you to contribute comments or tag photos. PVLD is one of the first library districts in the country to implement this new software. This program was made possible by support from the Peninsula Friends of the Library who funded the implementation fee for the project. PV Magazine had the opportunity to learn about the new PV Community Archives from Monique Sugimoto, Archivist & Local History Librarian for the Palos Verdes Library District. Anyone can access this new platform at palosverdeshistory. org (the website is the same as the former Digital Archives). You do not need a library card to use the website. If you want to add comments or upload images, you do need to recreate a member login with your name and email, membership is free. The site is completely managed by PVLD staff and user information is not used for any other purpose, so you will not receive any unsolicited advertising and your email will not be shared with anyone. Information submitted is reviewed and moderated by the PVLD Local History Center before posting to the site. You can access the website from any location and do not need to be at the library to use it, although we should mention the Local History Center still has physical archives not yet uploaded that can only

be accessed at their offices. Sugimoto plans on creating pages for educators and other community groups about unique topics of interest, so students can research local history, and history lovers and the curious will be able to learn more about our local history through photos, newspaper articles, and links to videos. Often these materials have geotags to give the user the location on the Peninsula referenced. The Local History Center will be adding oral histories and creating timelines to help users explore and engage with the site. Users can create their own collection, visible only to them, for research or just for personal interest. The best part is that more features will be rolled out over time. Right now community users can add photos and recollections, but in the future users will also be able to add maps, documents and videos. The community should keep checking back as more materials are added and the platform grows, but right now you can already access over 3700 images, collections, videos, documents, and publications with more added weekly!
Although you do not need to visit the library to enjoy the new PV Community Archives, there are still lots of activities happening on site as part of Summer @ PVLD for kids, teens and adults! This summer adults can enjoy a Sushi demonstration, afternoon movies, or yoga for beginners just to name a few of the activities. Teens can participate in a Mario Kart Tournament and an Anime Watch Party. For kids there is everything from crafts and games to fun with science! Everyone can win prizes just by reading and participating in the weekly library events! For more information visit pvld.org.

VIVA ITALIA April 2021
The timeless beauty and glory of the Palos Verdes peninsula always evoke a sense of Italy’s charm. Standing on the cliffs of Lunada Bay, our favorite Italian photographer, Tom Wayne Bertolotti watched a man exclaim, ‘La California sembra la Sicilia!’ – capturing the essence perfectly. This moment reaffirmed his love for PV, our Mediterranean-like corner of Southern California. The stunning coastline and delightful villas will forever make Palos Verdes feel a little bit like Italy.

In 1994, Jim York and his business partner acquired 300 acres of the Vanderlip Estate and 104 acres where Marineland of the Pacific once stood, now home to Terranea. After nearly 20 years working on Terranea, he still owns property across the street, now Catalina View Gardens, where he is currently building a new home. A longtime Palos Verdes resident, York values the land’s history and details, such as pathways created with local stone. York enjoys walking through his gardens and vineyard, sharing his knowledge of agriculture and wine. He expects a record avocado harvest this year, with chefs at Terranea using fruits and vegetables from his property for farm-to-table dishes. Reflecting on his life, York wants to be remembered as a hard worker who never gives up and strives to leave things better than he found them.

THE PEOPLE WE SEE DO
MEET SHIRTLESS KETIH Written and Photographed by Erik Jay
It seems any time of day and any location, someone is spotting ‘Shirtless Keith’ riding his bike up and down the streets of PV. For the last decade, he has been spotted on his $1500 ‘old school’ 30 pound BMX bike, passing athletic powerhouses optimizing their speed records on $12,000 racers. Five days a week on the road and weekends with the warriors on their bikes. From Marymount to Malaga Cove, Shirtless Keith leads the pack. He is the one to pass. He starts his days prepping his bike, using WD-40 to polish the chrome and protect the moving parts. Finishing up with a large bowl of Grape Nuts and as much whole milk as one can tolerate, he sets off to begin his day. No watch, no internet, no drama; his Photo Erik Jay feeding every sense. spent of outside days arecourtesy He is a kind person who has made several friends; many stopping to wave and say hello. Kids, professionals on their lunch breaks and August 2022all know him. “My best friend is resistance. Every time you meet, it leaves you better and stronger" he says
"The biggest enemy is convenience. Every time something is done for you, it could cause all sorts of problems. You forget how to do things.” He has no mantra, he tells time by the shade of dark and his level of keeping it real leaves you with a feeling of a lesson learned. And what keeps this biking super force fueled all day? Lots and lots of Mountain Dew and cookie dough. That’s the ‘go-to’ for Keith for immediate energy. And somehow it works. His dream bike is the one he rides. He wouldn’t trade it for anything. There is no fancy racer that is appealing to him as he prefers the one gear approach because, “You are always in the right gear that way.” Since 2010, Keith has been pedaling around the peninsula day and night, putting over 150,000 miles in the last seven years alone, going through three to five sets of tires a year. He found his dream Photo courtesty of Katrina Vanderlip life and he is living it, using his body to take him around the most beautiful city around, stopping whenever and wherever he wants. Our article about “Shirtless Keith” back in 2021 was a reader favorite! For years drivers had passed by him his bike, seeing|him mber 2021| on PVMAGAZINE 32 all around the Peninsula with no shirt and cutoff jeans. We loved learning a little about his philosophy and what keeps him going!
January 2020
Kelvin Vanderlip, Sr. was one of the six children of Frank Vanderlip who was considered the founding father of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Kelvin shared his father’s love for California and made a decision to carry on his father’s dream and he continued to develop different areas on the Peninsula. He met and married Elin and together they moved their four children into the Villa Narcissa, the home his father, Frank Vanderlip, had built in Portuguese Bend. The family had a deeply rooted passion for nature, education, art, culture and entertaining as well as love for the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This set the tone for a very colorful and dynamic lifestyle which was filled with spirited parties attended by Hollywood celebrities, politicians and writers such as Ted Geissel who wrote the Dr. Seuss series. The family rode horses, attended Wayfarers Chapel and ran around the beautiful hillsides of Portuguese Bend.

Sharing Smiles DICK KAZAN April 2021
If you live in the Montemalaga area you have most likely had the pleasure of seeing Dick Kazan during your daily morning drive. Dick stands at the end of his driveway each morning for 30-45 minutes and greets all the cars with a huge smile and friendly wave. We noticed Dick Kazan and we had to ask him why.
“ I do it because it’s a wonderful way to make life a little better for us all. Many people live stressful lives and for at least a moment, their stress is released, and their hearts beat a little happier.”

Since we first met John, the Malaga Cove resident and iconic Los Angeles pop artist and graphic designer has continued to inspire with his creative output, now featured in the new traveling exhibition, “Crazy World Ain’t It: The Art of John Van Hamersveld.” Van Hamersveld’s enduring impact on the art world is celebrated through this comprehensive display of his diverse and influential works. His art has been featured in exhibitions worldwide while the documentary about his life, Crazy World Ain’t It has been viewed over 35,000,000 times. We were also excited to find out that John’s iconic movie poster, Endless Summer is celebrating 60 years!
Shortly after the launch of our magazine, the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing with it unprecedented challenges and losses. We faced the absence of normalcy, the strain on our communities, and the heartache of lost moments and connections. Despite these hardships, our community and the entire world emerged stronger and more resilient. Now, we all are back and this magazine is more dedicated than ever to sharing stories and celebrating our community’s human spirit.

Point Fermin Lighthouse
Celebrates 150 Years! Written by Ci n d y D o n n e l l y
This year the Point Fermin Lighthouse is celebrating its 150th Anniversary. For a century and a half, this restored Victorian era lighthouse has stood at the natural entrance to the Los Angeles Harbor, and today it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In honor of this milestone, PV Magazine recently visited the Lighthouse and had the pleasure to meet with Kristen Heather, Historic Site Curator/Director, Martha Austin McKinzie, President of the Point Fermin Lighthouse Society (PFLHS) and board member Diane Bertelsen. A partnership between the City of Los Angeles and the PFLHS made a renovation in 2002 possible. In 2003, the Lighthouse opened to the public on a regular basis for the first time in its history. This was the culmination of years of community fundraising, first led in the 1970’s by local community leaders John Olguin and Willam Olesen. These efforts eventually led to the formation of the Point Fermin Lighthouse Society as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and the organization has been instrumental in the preservation of this community landmark ever since. As we started to discuss the rich history of the Lighthouse, Diane pointed out that the Point Fermin Lighthouse pre-dates both the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty! Martha noted that both the first lighthouse keepers in 1874 and last lighthouse keepers between 1925 and 1927 were women. During the tour, it was clear that Martha felt at home in the Lighthouse rooms; it turns out that she is not only the PFLHS President, but 20 | PVMagazine | July | 2024
she is also the granddaughter and niece of the last lighthouse keepers. She is named after her grandmother, Martha Austin, who served as lighthouse keeper with her husband Willam from 1917 until 1925. Their daughter Thelma Austin, with help from her sister Juanita, took over as the last lighthouse keeper after Martha’s death until 1927. After 1927 the City of Los Angeles managed the Lighthouse until 1941, and then again after WWII. As we moved from room to room, Martha explained that the Lighthouse was empty when it opened to the public in 2003. The last lighthouse keepers took their furniture and belongings when they moved out. Over the last twenty years, the Lighthouse has been completely furnished with donated historical pieces as well as items acquired by the PFLHS. The original blueprints were used to restore the Lighthouse to its original condition from when the keepers lived in the house. Martha also has shared first-hand accounts from her aunts about what life was like during the years the family called the Lighthouse home, such as who used which bedroom and who might have snuck out a window to attend a dance! Today, the Point Fermin Lighthouse welcomes guests from the local area and from around the world as well as special tours for local school children, seniors, and other organizations. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and tours are offered with the help of volunteers and city employees. One of the highlights of the tour is
PV HISTORY

climbing up the four flights of steps to the tower to see the location of the original lens and light and enjoy the amazing view (please note that young children are not permitted to climb up to the tower.) Visitors will also enjoy the opportunity to see one of the fourth-order Fresnel lighthouse lenses that was used at the Lighthouse. Outside is a Butterfly Garden tended by volunteers that was in full bloom during our visit. Diane and Martha share how a local Boy Scout Troop 276 from Rancho Palos Verdes completed Eagle Scout projects at the site including clearing the area for the Butterfly Garden and making benches for guests to enjoy. The Point Fermin Lighthouse is located at 807 W. Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro, in beautiful Point Fermin Park. The Lighthouse is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, with free tours at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. It is closed Mondays and city holidays. No reservations required, and tours are on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is also a charming little gift shop. If you have not been, or it is has been a while since your last visit, this 150th Anniversary celebration is the perfect time to enjoy this local treasure.

“ That after 31 wonderful years, I have decided to say adieu to Palos Verdes and I will be moving to a small village in France in October.” — Jürgen Dear Friends and Neighbors of Palos Verdes, It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter to inform you that after 31 wonderful years, I have decided to close the doors of Corners of the World and move to a small farmhouse located in a little village in France. This decision was not made lightly, and it comes with a flood of emotions and memories that I will cherish forever. When I first opened Corners of the World, I could never have imagined the incredible journey that lay ahead. Over the years, this shop has become more than just a place of business; it has become a gathering place, a community hub, and a second home to many. I have had the privilege of meeting so many remarkable individuals, each bringing their unique stories, laughter, and warmth into the shop. You have not just been customers; you have been friends and family. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support you have shown me throughout the years. From the grand opening day to the countless community events, and even through the challenging times, your loyalty and encouragement have been the backbone of Corners of the World. Your enthusiasm for the diverse and unique treasures we offered made every day a joy and kept the spirit of the shop alive. As I embark on this new chapter of my life, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. Thank you for your kindness, your patronage, and for making Corners of the World a beloved part of Palos Verdes. I will carry your smiles, stories, and the sense of community we built together with me, always. While I am excited for the new adventures that await, saying goodbye is never easy. Please know that I will miss the daily interactions, the familiar faces, and the shared moments that have made the past 31 years so incredibly special. Thank you, Palos Verdes, for the memories, the friendship, and for being such an integral part of my journey. I wish you all continued happiness, health, and prosperity.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center Ambassadors Evening: & CSC South Bay Celebrate National Embracing the Beauty of Aging Cancer Survivors Day Photos by Ed McClure
Torrance Memorial Medical Center, together with Cancer Support Community South Bay (CSC South Bay), joined in commemorating National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 2 with a Hawaiian luau themed celebration held at Torrance Memorial Hunt Cancer Center. The event honored cancer survivors, provided inspiration to those recently diagnosed, and was a gathering of support and outreach to the community. More than 200 cancer survivors, their families and friends sporting Hawaiian attire were treated to healthy refreshments, crafts, wellness resources, entertainment and more in a festive outdoor setting. It aims to celebrate milestones and show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, fulfilling and inspiring.
Donors and their guests enjoyed dinner and inspirational speakers on aging gracefully at the Bluewater Grill on May 14. Esteemed medical professionals, including Nadai Jafar Curran, MD, Cynthia Ro, MD, Shlee Song, MD and Lynn Whitlock, RN, CCRP, shared invaluable insights on women’s heart health, hormonal changes, stroke prevention and the vital role of exercise in maintaining wellness.
