Mike Ciminera Palos Verdes Author of The Aircraft Designers: A Northrop Grumman Historical Perspective Written by Melani Morose Edelstein Photos at the Western Museum of Flight taken by Ed McClure

Delve into the world of Top Gun and the Grumman F-14 Tomcat through the insightful lens of Palos Verdes author Mike Ciminera, a distinguished figure whose career with Grumman and Northrop Grumman spanned almost 51 years. In his book The Aircraft Designers: A Northrop Grumman Historical Perspective, stretching two, 500 page volumes, Ciminera provides an insider’s report on the design of the iconic Tomcat, exploring the dreams of kids who aspired to fly it and the remarkable individuals who transformed those dreams into tangible hardware. “I wrote the book to talk about the history of the company and the background. Most importantly though, it was to identify and remember the people that created these airplanes. Between the creation phase and first flight, who were they? What were their stories? You always hear about 16 | PVMagazine | February | 2024

the chief designers but what about the others?” explains Ciminera. He learned early on in his career that it takes the support of many to succeed. Ciminera traces his career back to an early opportunity in designing airplanes. At the age of 12, with little knowledge, he began the journey. Through high school, he worked persistently, even buying his own drawing board. Sending his designs to aircraft companies, Ciminera received feedback, marked with corrections and approvals. “This experience fueled my passion, eventually earning me a scholarship to Rensselaer, the oldest engineering school in the U.S. During college, I spent every summer as an apprentice at Grumman. Despite it being a very unusual move, I was hired into preliminary design upon graduation.”

” I was given the chance. You don’t get there by yourself. Yes, you have to have the qualities and the drive and the ambition and a certain attitude, but nobody does it alone, people help you get there.” The Aircraft Designers: A Northrop Grumman Historical Perspective is a retrospective that not only unveils the fascinating history of one of the largest aerospace companies of the 20th century but also highlights Ciminera’s meticulous chronicle of the dynamic company and the extraordinary engineers who played a pivotal role in making Northrop Grumman a great success. In 1994 Northrop purchased Grumman while Ciminera was living in Long Island, New York. In 1996 he was invited to work on the F-18 Hornet production and production programs and made the move to Southern California. He and his wife Donna began renting a home on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1996 after several Northrop compatriots suggested it was a nice place to live. In 2000 they purchased a house and have lived on the hill ever since. “We kind of fell in love with the place. It’s a beautiful place to live and is very convenient to everything, it’s relatively quiet. My wife is very active in animal protection. So we had some cats and a dog and this community was very amenable to that. It’s just beautiful. There are some restaurants, I play golf occasionally, it’s five minutes from my house, it’s a public course and things like that make Palos Verdes a lovely place to live.” Besides airplanes, Ciminera loves flowers. He inherited a love of gardening from his father. His green thumb blooms into full display every spring when his garden comes to life. Ciminera loves laboring in his garden and has been actively involved in a gardening society at the South Coast Botanic Garden for years. The couple lead an active life and have no plans to slow down. Ciminera says he doesn’t like the word retired. He is 86 and she is 82. Donna Ciminera runs the Pet Protection League and spends many hours managing the large foundation. Her husband remains fully engaged with his interests. Continued on page 19

Ciminera sits on the board of the COA (Christian Outreach in Action), a non-denominational center in Long Beach that cares for those in need. He also coordinates the Hot Food Ministry at his church where he and his team have been preparing hot meals for 20 years. “I go back to RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) twice a year to work with the dean of engineering, and the advisory council of the school of engineering, it keeps me up to date on what’s going on and I get to meet a lot of students and help them. I’m also the president of the board of the Western Museum of Flight in Torrance, which is a small, very fine museum with some very unique airplanes and we’ve been building it up.” The Western Museum of Flight’s mission is to “capture the imagination and inspire achievement through memorable experiences that celebrate the rich Southern California aerospace legacy.” They house three types of airplanes used in the movie Top Gun including the Tom Cat, the plane

used to stand in for the Mig, and the one used by “Viper” in the training exercises. Mike Ciminera’s journey from a 12-year-old dreaming of designing airplanes to a distinguished figure in aerospace is a testament to passion, collaboration, and the unsung heroes behind iconic aircraft. His book, “The Aircraft Designers,” not only delves into the history of Northrop Grumman but also shines a light on the remarkable individuals who brought these dreams to life. Beyond the pages, Ciminera’s vibrant life in Palos Verdes, from his love for gardening to active involvement in charitable endeavors, reflects a commitment to community and a perpetual drive to contribute. As he embraces the dynamic chapters of his life, from Long Island to Southern California, Ciminera continues to soar, symbolizing that a life well-lived is a collaborative masterpiece, much like the airplanes he dedicated his career to.

The Peninsula Is Now Home to Its First National Historic Landmark:

Wayfarers Chapel Written by Cindy Do n n e l l y | P h o t o s b y E r i k Jay

Opened in 1951, Wayfarers Chapel was commissioned by the Swedenborgian Church and was built on 3.5 acres of land donated by Narcissa Cox Vanderlip in what is now the City of Rancho Palos Verdes. Architect Lloyd Wright, the son of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the Chapel. Locals have known for decades that the beautiful Wayfarers Chapel or “glass church” is a special place. Wandering the gardens and admiring the amazing glass structure, or attending Sunday services or weddings inside the chapel, always brings a sense of wonder and an opportunity to feel connected to the natural beauty of the surroundings. On December 13, 2023, the Secretary of the Interior announced that the National Park Service (NPS) designated Wayfarers Chapel as a National Historic Landmark. It joins a list of only 149 other places in California that currently hold this distinction and there are just over 2,600 properties designated as National Historic Landmarks across the United States. It joins just a handful of other Los Angeles-area sites bestowed with this honor including the Rose Bowl and the L.A. Coliseum. According to the NPS website: “National Historic Landmarks are buildings, sites, districts, structures, and objects that have been determined by the Secretary of the Interior to be nationally significant in American history and culture. Many of the most renowned historic properties in the nation are Landmarks. Mount Vernon, Pearl Harbor, the Apollo Mission Control Center, Alcatraz, and Martin Luther King’s Birthplace are Landmarks that illustrate important contributions to the nation’s historical development.”

2024 | February | PVMagazine | 21

PV Magazine reached out to Dan Burchett, Executive Director of Wayfarers Chapel, to learn how this honor came about, and what it means to the Chapel. He explained that Reverend Dr. David Brown, senior minister for Sunday services, guided the five-year application process, managing all the necessary documentation as the application went through three major rounds of consideration before its ultimate approval. Dan recognizes that locals often associate Wayfarers Chapel with significant life journeys such as weddings, baptisms, and memorials but it is also a place of worship open to all. Dan feels this recent honor fits with the original goals set forth at the Chapel’s establishment over 70 years ago: “holding sacred the openness of the chapel and grounds to stop, rest and reflect, removed from the stresses of life to allow a spiritual experience.” He emphasizes they have always welcomed the wayfarer stopping along their journey, no membership or status is required, and the chapel has “open doors to everyone, people of all faiths or no faith, to explore the relationship to the eternal in a beautiful, natural setting.” PV Magazine congratulates the Wayfarers Chapel as the Peninsula celebrates being home to a National Historic Landmark. The chapel is open to the public between services. For more information you can visit their website at www.wayfarerschapel.org.

Crafting Timeless Elegance The Journey of Jewelry Designer

Is a b el Her r er a

PV Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with local jewelry designer Isabel Herrera to delve into her multicultural background and the unique artistry that defines each of her jewelry pieces. Born in Torreon, a desert city in Mexico, Isabel’s journey led her to the United States, where she embraced a new chapter after marrying her American husband, Ramin Daizadeh, 15 years ago. Entranced by the lush and tranquil city of Palos Verdes, Isabel fell in love with the locale. Following a two-year search, the family discovered their dream home, instantly connecting with the incredible community. Proudly raising 14-year-old Sofia and 12-year-old Mateo, Isabel cherishes their life in Palos Verdes and considers the Daizadeh an integral part of the vibrant community.

Inspiration and Education: A Journey Across Borders Isabel’s early exposure to precious metals in her father’s family-owned silver mines in Zacatecas, Mexico, ignited her passion for the craft. The rich silversmith tradition of Zacatecas left a lasting impression, prompting her to pursue in-depth knowledge in Florence, Italy. Later, in the United States, Isabel enrolled in the Gemology program at GIA, focusing on her love for gems, especially diamonds. With seven years of experience in Italy and a commitment to mastering gemology in the United States, Isabel specializes in crafting one-of-a-kind jewelry, offering tailor-made designs and skillfully remodeling jewels. Multicultural Fusion: Shaping Unique Designs Isabel’s multicultural background significantly influences her unique sense of art in jewelry design. Drawing from her experience in Florence’s jewelry craftsmanship hub and integrating Mexican elements of color, textures, and patterns, Isabel creates designs that stand out. The addition of high-end machinery and technology in the United States further enriches her expertise, allowing her to craft highly specific, personalized, and exclusive designs. Studio in Lunada Bay: A Hub of Creativity Isabel’s primary workshop, located in Downtown LA’s Jewelry District, is home to a highly skilled team crafting all their pieces. Meanwhile, her design studio in Lunada Bay Plaza serves as a creative space to engage with clients, refine details, and present proposals. Although many of her client meetings are via Zoom, she tells us she loves meeting her clients in person at her studio in Palos Verdes. Timeless Elegance: Isabel’s Signature Style Describing her style, Isabel emphasizes a distinct classical and timeless essence in her jewelry. Her appreciation for diamond and colorstone pave, coupled with the finesse of high-end craftsmanship, sets her designs apart. Additionally, she has a profound appreciation for highlighting the inherent beauty of gems, creating pieces that exude understated elegance.

The 40th anniversary Holiday Festival Gala at Torrance Memorial attracted more than 600 guests for a joyous celebration in the expansive white tent. Auctioneer Letitia Frye skillfully inspired bids on live auction items and Gift from the Heart, and the silent auction broke its record with nearly $69,000 in winning bids. Immersed in a festive atmosphere, guests displayed their generosity, enjoyed a delicious meal and danced the night away. The $5.2 million raised, including the generous $3 million donation from Carol and Jerry Marcil will make a significant impact supporting Torrance Memorial’s Emergency Department expansion campaign.

Memorial Service to Honor Members of PVEPD With heavy hearts, we solemnly remember the anniversary of the passing of two esteemed members of the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, Captain Michael Wayne Tracy and Sergeant Vernon Thomas Vanderpool, whose watch ended on February 14th, 1994. Sergeant Vernon Thomas Vanderpool and Captain Michael Wayne Tracy were tragically shot and killed while attending a department staff training seminar at the Holiday Inn in Torrance, California. The fateful incident occurred during an attempted robbery when a gunman burst into their conference room. In a display of remarkable courage, Sergeant Vanderpool immediately lunged at the gunman and was shot, while Captain Tracy was shot while attempting to assist his colleague. The assailant, wearing a bulletproof vest, ultimately choked to death on the vest while being subdued by other officers. Sergeant Vanderpool, a dedicated public servant, had served with the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department for 13 years and had previously served with the Los Angeles Police Department for nine years. Captain Michael Wayne Tracy, whose End of Watch was on Monday, February 14, 1994, had deep roots in Torrance. Graduating from Torrance High School, he pursued his lifelong ambition to become a police officer. Capt. Tracy commenced his career in 1966

as a Reserve Officer with the Garden Grove Police Department. After completing the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Academy, he was hired on full-time with the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department in 1969. In recognition of his exceptional bravery, Captain Tracy was presented with the South Bay Medal of Valor Award in 1974 and 1975. These two officers, Sergeant Vanderpool and Captain Tracy, not only exhibited selfless valor during the attempted robbery that fateful day but also dedicated their lives to serving and protecting the community they loved. Their legacy lives on in the hearts and memories of those who had the privilege of knowing them.

On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, the City of Palos Verdes Estates will hold a memorial service in honor of the two men at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis Church with a short reception to follow.

“Our debt to the heroic actions of Captain Tracy and Sergeant Vanderpool can never be repaid. They have earned our gratitude and as we honor them on this 30th anniversary, we will never forget their sacrifice.”

Las Amigas Valentine’s for Seniors Las Amigas, an inclusive community for moms and dads, and Los Amigos, a group of boys and girls from 6th to 12th grade, constitute a family-oriented organization. They extend a warm welcome to Palos Verdes/South Bay families who appreciate Teamwork and Volunteerism, and who are enthusiastic about having enjoyable experiences while giving back to the community. Over the past several years, the Los Amigos, comprising around 43 kids, have dedicated their efforts to creating Valentine Cards for PVE Cares to distribute among their members. Peninsula Chapter of NCL Hosts Annual Holiday Tea 2023 On Sunday, December 10, the Lee’s home filled with the scent of fresh brewed tea and coffee as over 500 guests celebrated the work-filled year. After collectively volunteering over 13,840 hours since June 1, each girl got to invite two guests, including aunts, grandmothers, cousins, teachers, and coaches. This year, there were three generations of 7th grade, 9th grade, and 11th grade classes host, serving tea and refilling tea sandwich platters to the class immediately above them. These years emphasize hostess skills amongst the Ticktockers, from how to welcome guests to how to properly serve food. The 8th, 10th, and 12th graders and their moms socialized and enjoyed the afternoon. Alternating these roles strengthens the Ticktockers’ hostess skills, in addition to teaching them how to be a poised and polite guest. The annual afternoon always emphasizes the joy of taking time away from their busy lives, especially chaotic with finals this time of the year, to enjoy a leisurely afternoon with their friends.

PV RESCUE OF THE MONTH

the Harbor Seal Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n Photos courtes y o f t h e M a r i n e M a m m a l C a re C e n t e r

Elmer, the once malnourished harbor seal pup rescued from the shores of Palos Verdes’ Christmas Tree cove, is now thriving and joyfully on his way to his permanent home, thanks to dedicated care and support of the team at the Marine Mammal Care Center. MMCC CEO John Warner says as Elmer matured, it became apparent the adorable harbor seal pup, found alone on the beach with his umbilical cord still attached, lacked the typical interest and ability to catch fish. “This is a vital skill for independent survival. Veterinary examinations revealed bilateral cataracts, resulting in blindness in both eyes. You can take comfort in knowing that blind harbor seals can go on to live full lives, but as you can imagine, returning to the wild isn’t a viable option for Elmer,” Warner explains. The good news is many zoos and aquariums are willing to adopt marine mammals like Elmer that are in need of permanent care. NOAA is actively searching for an ideal facility among zoos and aquariums to provide Elmer with the specialized care he requires for optimal well-being. With conditional approval from NOAA Fisheries, Elmer is expected to be transported to his new home in early 2024, less than a year after he was found. Elmer’s incredible journey, fueled by the compassion of countless individuals, underscores the importance and resilience of wild animals. Rescued at just a few days old, Elmer faced slim chances of survival, but thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers, he now has a second lease on life. As a reminder, when at the beach, encourage others to share the shore by giving animals a minimum of 50 feet of space, using zoom on cameras for pictures, and promptly reporting distressed marine mammals to the hotline at 1-800-39-WHALE. Thanks to compassionate people like you, Elmer received life-saving support when he needed it most. Elmer’s inspirational story reminds us of the importance and resilience of wild animals. He was only a few days old when we rescued him, making his chances of survival low; however, because of the generous support of donors and volunteers, Elmer gets a second chance at life.

Thank you for being there to help Elmer on his rehabilitation journey and road to release. Any time you head to the beach remind your fellow beachgoers to Share the Shore by giving animals at least 50 feet of space, using zoom on cameras to take pictures, and calling our marine mammal hotline at 1-800-39-WHALE if you see a marine mammal in distress.

Cars ‘n Coffee PV’s Chance to Check Out What’s Under the Hood! Written by Aid a n S h e n | P h o t o s b y A i d a n S h e n

In the world of automotive lovers, many assume that you have to have deep pockets and own a multi million-dollar car to have an entry into the community. But the culture has changed tremendously over time. Teens without a large budget to work with have learned how to resourcefully upgrade their own less expensive cars, turning common Honda Civics into roaring machines on the road. Those and many other assortments of different vehicles can be seen at car shows. On the first Saturday in January, assorted supercars met in the Peninsula High School parking lot and there were tons of enthusiasts of all ages. As someone who has traveled as far as San Clemente for their Cars and Coffee, it was exciting to see a show that’s held locally. For January, Peninsula Cars n Coffee hosted with the theme Shelby vs. Corvette to celebrate the birthday of one of the most well-known automotive designers in history, Caroll Shelby. Shelby is best known for helping to build the Ford gt40 and has since created his own independent brand. Entering the parking lot, I parked at a distance to make sure my car wasn’t considered to be part of the show. I walked towards the crowd that had gathered in the middle, and I was greeted with a cup of coffee and conversation with those who had shown up early. Within the first 30 minutes, there was a turnout of all kinds of cars and people. The theme of Shelby and Corvette didn’t discourage members of the BMW, Mclaren and Ferrari etc. communities from showing as well. Among all the vehicles that were being shown, I was most captivated by the crowd who brought their creatively modified Nissans, Toyotas, and

Hondas. The number of younger kids that showed serves as a true testament to the shift in culture from a time when they would have had to beg their parents to take the nice car to show off. Nowadays they can show off something of their own creation with all the design and performance modifications that make each car unique. As the event wrapped up, it was pleasantly evident that the essence of car enthusiasm transcends the restrictions of age and budget. The value of a build is in the eye of the beholder, and you should always keep an open mind to other people’s creativity. The Peninsula Cars n Coffee car show meets the first Saturday of the month from 7:30 to 9:30am at the PV Peninsula High School North Parking Lot follow them on Instagram @pvconcours.
