Editor’s Letter

Issue No. 30

Greetings Palos Verdes! With the weather finally starting to cool off, it seems everyone around the Peninsula is starting to get into the fall spirit. I love driving around and seeing all of the fun Halloween and Fall decorations. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. I have always loved to decorate for Halloween and promptly on October 1, I would start. Halloween for my kids started out small and as the years went by it grew and grew. By the time they were in middle school, I was hosting Halloween parties throughout the month for the kids and their friends, my friends and even my friends’ friends! My haunted house which had started out as a room in my downstairs, through the years, evolved into my entire downstairs area, the garage and extended out onto the driveway under a popup tent! Anyone that knows me and has kids, most likely has been to one of my Halloween parties. I haven’t done a haunted house in a few years but that doesn’t mean I can’t get the same excitement and joy out of all of your fun Halloween decorations. This month we asked everyone to send in photos of their Halloween decorations. From Bob Ross skeleton to a skeleton giving another skeleton a COVID test, Rob Cabrerra of Rolling Hills Estates, delivered. These hilariously clever skeletons are not to be missed! If you are looking for something to do, check out our community calendar as our Around Town section in this issue is an example of how busy the community has been over the last month. So many things have been happening. I am excited to share the completion of Coastal California, The Wild Life and hope you will help us celebrate the animals and incredible organizations that protect and preserve them. Thank you to Co-Creator and friend, Amber Becerra, who took an idea and literally ran full speed ahead to make it happen! I would also like to give a huge thank you to Lane Bullard, our very own PV Magazine Graphic designer who put the book together and added all her beautiful touches to the 220 page book. We hope you enjoy this Thanksgiving issue. We are extremely thankful to be able to continue to share this magazine with the community. Please continue to send us your great story ideas and photos. Don’t forget to go to our website and sign up for our weekly newsletter which recaps each issue, has local events and content that we can’t always fit into our printed publication. Follow us on Instagram to get real time event reminders and lots of beautiful photos of our beautiful community. The Palos Verdes Peninsula is a place of extraordinary beauty. The exquisite allure of PV is obvious to all who visit the Peninsula but what lies beyond the view of the naked eye, on a different level, is equally as captivating. While putting together the book Palos Verdes, The Great Peninsula, an epic photographic journey across the Palos Verdes Peninsula with photographer Erik Jay, local resident and PV Magazine’s very own publisher Kristin Borden had an epiphany about the magical place she calls home. With the recent raging wildfires and news of climate change leading the evening news night after night Borden knew she had to do more to shine a spotlight on the area’s wildlife and the amazing conservation efforts at play behind the scenes. “Seeing all the hundreds and hundreds of photos, and working with the amazingly talented Erik Jay on the first book, there were so many photos of incredible wildlife in the photo library, I knew I had to figure out how to use them. They just made me smile. I couldn’t get them out of my mind even after the book published. I just knew once

14 | PVMagazine | Thanksgiving Issue 30 | 2022

I acquired this vast photo library, I had to do something with these photos and that it was an opportunity to bring awareness to the challenges facing these animals up and down the California coastline,” Borden says. ”I certainly was not an authority on these challenges so I decided to reach out to Amber Becerra and presented the idea to her. It took quite a few meetings about the project, but once we finetuned our vision, within a production period of about eight months, we had a stunning 220 page hard cover book with an incredible amount of passion and love behind it. Becerra, President and CEO of the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles and the book’s Co-Creator says the idea to create Coastal California, The Wild Life became clear as she and Borden were marveling over the incredible wildlife that call the California coastline home. One thing that makes the book so powerful, says Becerra, is the thousands of dollars in proceeds that will go directly to benefit the nine wildlife conservation organizations showcased in its pages. These conservation heroes fight daily to ensure the survival of several iconic California species we

rarely get to see, until now. “Coastal California, The Wild Life allows every person an opportunity to peek behind the scenes and catch a glimpse of the beauty around us, beauty that conservationists work so hard to protect,” says Becerra. Becerra worked tirelessly for the last three years bringing the Marine Mammal Care Center back from the brink of financial disaster, and recently secured a onemillion dollar donation from Melanie and Richard Lundquist for the Center. The center not only rehabilitates and releases our local marine animals but also contributes to important research on the state of ocean health as well as educating tens of thousands of local students and visitors who come to the center to see and learn about marine life. Readers are provided a sneak peek into the magnificent array of creatures that reside up and down the beautiful California coastline. With breathtaking photography donated by twenty of California’s most respected Dr Lauren Palmer looks through the section in the book spotlighting the amazing work that they do at Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro

philanthropy wildlife photographers, it’s no wonder that Jeff Corwin, world-famous biologist and conservationist was inspired to get involved. The book is dedicated to P-54, a beloved Los Angeles mountain lion who was tragically hit by a car and killed while the book was being created. One of P-54’s beautiful cubs is featured on the title page of the book in her honor. Becerra and Borden said they both cried when they heard the news of P-54, as they had been so enmeshed in the imagery of these majestic creatures that roam the Santa Monica mountains at the time of the accident. Borden speaks from her heart when she explains that this book goes further than just inspiring readers to appreciate the variety of beautiful flora and fauna that graces our coastline. It actually raises awareness about the environmental threats that are facing our lands and its wildlife. “The stunning beauty of the wildlife photography absolutely moved me, it was like the photos were alive. I had to share that. I wanted to create a piece of tangible history, which I think this book is, but without the 20 incredible world class photographers who capture the perfect moments, that dream never would have been possible.” Amber Beccera and Kristin Borden hope you will support the organizations showcased in this book who tirelessly work to care for the animals living on the California coastline that make Palos Verdes and all of California such a beautiful and dynamic place to live.”

Pelican release after being rehabilitated at the center Photo courtesy of International Bird Rescue

international bird rescue Written by Mela n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

The International Bird Rescue is one of the nine organizations spotlighted in Coastal California, The Wild Life. It is located in San Pedro near Fort MacArthur and adjacent to the Marine Mammal Care Center which is also featured in the book. Every person on the planet bears a responsibility to minimize harm and protect wildlife. As a society that remains reliant on petroleum products, we all share the burden for the impact that spilled oil can have on wildlife and the environment. This is a special obligations for residents of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and surrounding coastline communities and one that thankfully, International Bird Rescue (IBU) takes fervently. One of IBR’s biggest tasks is to capture, clean, and rehabilitate oiled aquatic birds and other animals so they can be released back into the wild. International Bird Rescue cares for sick, injured, abused, and orphaned aquatic birds at two yearround wildlife care centers in California, one right here in San Pedro the other in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bird Rescue aims to give a voice to waterbirds through conservation, advocacy, and wildlife literacy that builds empathy and encourages action. Their mission is to inspire people to act toward balance with the natural world by rescuing waterbirds in crisis. In 1971 after 800,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into San Francisco Bay, concerned individuals led by a registered nurse named Alice Berkner jumped into action bringing International Bird Rescue to life. “We have always had to pave a road where there is none.” Berkner notes.

Her work continues. Earlier this year, after rescuing more than 300 sick and injured pelicans from our Southern California coast IBR volunteers, who work with tenacity alongside professionals and the public and anyone willing to jump in, were overcome with joy by releasing a dozen pelicans they nursed to a healthy recovery. The release also marked the 100th pelican they’ve treated and let back into the wild. “It felt like I was letting them back into their own environment,”Michael, a volunteer who helped open the cage for one pelican, told reporters. The Bird Rescue team sees and cares for a variety of species. Among the most commonly treated include Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, Northern Fulmars, Western Grebes, American Coots, Common Loons, Black-crowned NightHerons, Snowy Egrets, and Great Blue Herons. Experts also say common human-caused injuries to aquatic birds include habitat destruction, plastic pollution, fishing hook lacerations, and fishing line entanglements and they implore humans to do better, and care for the wildlife. Incredibly, while International Bird Rescue specializes in treating seabirds and other aquatic birds, the organization is also capable of working with non-aquatic birds, including owls, hawks, doves, finches, hummingbirds, pigeons, sparrows, and wild turkeys. While International Bird Rescue is based in California, they work all over the world. IBR has responded to over 230 oil spills and conducted a variety of trainings in nearly a dozen different states and more than a dozen countries. IBR maintain a more than 25-member response team of highly trained and experienced wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians and biologists and they have cared for over 140 different species of birds, mammals and reptiles, including threatened and endangered species. The IBR maintains the belief that every life is valuable and that each animal is deserving of care and affirm that preserving the life of even one bird sends an important message. The International Bird Rescue is one of the nine organizations spotlighted in Coastal California, The Wild Life. It is located in San Pedro near Fort MacArthur and adjacent to the Marine Mammal Care Center which is also featured in the book. Donations for the book can be made directly to either organization and book can be picked up or shipped anywhere in the US just in time for the holidays and a great gift for anyone that loves animals.

to the Palos Verdes Peninsula An average of two Los Angeles County residents die by suicide every day, according to Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Hope Gatekeepers was created from the tragic loss of the founder’s first husband. In 2020, Misty Rivera started her work to bring suicide prevention and mental health awareness to The South Bay. September 23, 2022, marked the opening day for Hope Gatekeepers’ new office in Rancho Palos Verdes, and sadly marked the 20th year since Misty Rivera lost her first husband to suicide. Rivera and her team are a combination of certified suicide prevention instructors, child development experts, mental health advocates, survivors of suicide loss and coming soon—mental health responders to become Palos Verdes Peninsula crisis support. Hope Gatekeepers was created to bring our community together to end the stigma surrounding mental health and to stop suicide. The services include emotional support, family support, suicide prevention training, social connection, referral support, grief support and mental health crisis visits. Hope Gatekeepers provides suicide prevention and mental health awareness classes, workshops, and events; along with peer-to-peer mentorship and a safe place to receive resources and authentic care. New Nature Center to be Built at George F. Canyon The City of Rolling Hills Estates announced that it has been awarded $1.2 million from the California Department of Parks and Recreation to support construction of a new nature center at George F. Canyon. Senator Ben Allen requested the funds through Governor Newsom’s signed Budget Act of 2022 (AB 179). Senator Allen said, “I am proud we were able to secure this crucial support for the nature center in Rolling Hills Estates and I am so excited about the education, preservation and recreation opportunities that the new center will offer folks of all ages from the hill and across the entire L.A. basin. This is such a great win for our community.” George F. Canyon Preserve and Nature Center, located at the corner of Palos Verdes Drive North and Palos Verdes Drive East, is operated jointly by the City of Rolling Hills Estates and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. The nature center provides educational and recreational opportunities for the greater community to learn and enjoy the natural beauty of George F. Canyon. Inside the center, exhibits focus on the local flora and fauna, including live animals to observe up close. The nature center has been re-imagined from the existing 1,450-square-foot facility, including the outdoor deck, to a 3,290-square-foot facility to provide a welcoming gateway for the city with a new building that will offer a community facility and viewing decks with the purpose of promoting the canyon, trails and native habitat of the area. Mayor Frank Zerunyan stated, “We look forward to the enhanced programming a new nature center will offer the community to better connect with the natural habitat of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.”

Baldridge & Bonfires gives fans an opportunity to win their own intimate backyard show. Drew explained that he came up with this fun idea when COVID shut down all performances indoors. He had such a blast doing it in 2021 that he decided to continue in 2022! We know Beth, Shelby and all their f riends were happy that the concerts continued!

Dr. Hiroshi Suzuki This new UCLA Health doctor embraces the Peninsula lifestyle By Melani Moro s e E d e l s t e i n

Palos Verdes is privileged to welcome Dr. Hiroshi Suzuki, who brings years of comprehensive, international medical training and a global mentality to our community. UCLA Health primary care physician Dr. Hiroshi Suzuki is board certified in family medicine. His clinical interests include preventive care, managing chronic disease, and helping patients engage in transitional care after hospitalization. Having received his medical degree from Tokyo Medical University, Dr. Suzuki soon left Japan to pursue his dreams of becoming a US-licensed family physician. Today, he practices medicine right here on the Peninsula. Dr. Suzuki loves life on the Hill, with his office located in Rolling Hills Estates on Deep Valley Drive and the ocean just a few minutes away. Palos Verdes Magazine recently caught up with the doctor to learn more about Dr. Suzuki. Welcome to our community. How long have you lived here? I’ve lived in Palos Verdes for three months. I’m a person who loves the outdoors. What do you like most about Palos Verdes? Palos Verdes is a great place for me to live. Since PV is surrounded by nature, I go outside every chance. What I like most about PV is the many beautiful hiking trails with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean! Tell us about your work. I am passionate about educating patients to promote their health and wellness. I want to help my patients develop autonomy. My patients are very motivated to learn how to improve their

health and prevent diseases. I have terrific co-workers in the Palos Verdes clinic. Do you have a treasured pastime or unique way to spend time when you aren’t working? My favorite hobby is tennis. I used to play competitively in medical school and continue to play actively today. I enjoy exploring cities, trying different foods, and traveling in my off time. We know you moved to California in and worked as a research fellow for Preventive Medicine at the University of California San Diego and graduated from Family Medicine at the University of California Riverside. What else would you like readers to know about you? I am originally from Japan. I studied medicine in Tokyo. I studied Public Health in Berlin. I have seen many diverse patients who have different cultural backgrounds. Through my experiences, I learned the importance of understanding their background to facilitate patient communication and healthcare delivery. Working here in Palos Verdes, I bring this global and flexible mindset to our clinic, which I feel best serves the community. I am looking forward to developing meaningful relationships with patients here in Palos Verdes.

turbo the turtle

PV PET OF THE MONTH Tell us about your pet Turbo is a male, eight-year-old Sulcata Tortoise. We got Turbo when he was just a baby and could fit into the palm of a hand. Currently he is weighing in around about 65 lbs.

The Gardner family of five! Jeff and Holly, Katherine and Ben (twins, both Juniors at PVHS) and Will (8th grade at PVIS)

Is there a story behind Turbo’s name? Turbo was named because even though he is a tortoise, he gets around pretty fast! Tell us something special or unusual about Turbo? Turbo and our labradoodle Bucky are good buddies. Bucky can bark and get right up in Turbo’s face and he is unfazed. Turbo also has a very sophisticated palate and enjoys snacking on kale and romaine lettuce. He also loves fruit—bananas and melon are two of his favorites! What do you like best about your pet? Turbo is super cool looking and very low maintenance. Any funny stories you would like to share? On occasion, Turbo has gotten out of our yard and since he is so large and heavy—our wonderful neighbors have had to return him to us on a skateboard and in a wagon. So please don’t be surprised if you see him cruising around pretty fast in Valmonte! How spoiled is your pet? Turbo is pretty spoiled! Sometimes, we have to make trip to the market not for the Gardner family of five, but to get fresh lettuce for Turbo!

Harold Gudmundsson

Surviving the mental and physical wounds of the Vietnam War, this Palos Verdes local finds his own peace Written by Eri k Jay

Veteran’s Day is November 11 so what better way to honor veterans, those that have fought for our country and those that have been killed in the line of service, than to share Harold’s story. Convertibles, surfboards and the Beach Boys were part of a daily regimen in 1960s Southern California. These daily drives and dives were no strangers to Harold Gudmundsson. Harold has always been a local who loved life and had no problem making friends wherever he went. A class act, a good surfer and a student at El Camino College, he was in love and he was happy where he was in life. But, the Vietnam War was no stranger to Harold either. After receiving a thirty-day notice to report for duty, he did the hardest thing he had ever done: he said goodbye to everything he knew and went to face something he knew nothing about. He traded in his education at El Camino for an education in weaponry. With eight weeks of basic training and weaponry training, the transition from PV to Vietnam was complete. Along with up to 60 other men in his company, he set out into the jungles of Vietnam. Local villages housed friend and foe, leaving a man to make friends while also seeking out the enemy. “The people that would serve you a beer during the day could very well be the same one shooting at you at night,” Harold said. “Everybody was intermingled and you had no way of telling who was who.” Harold’s life took a turn as he was turning 21 when he shouted, “incoming!” and then felt a blast send him to the ground. “I remember it detonating and the piercings hitting me all over my legs,” Harold said. “I recall two guys grabbing me and throwing me into the closest foxhole.” Harold had detonated a landmine and his legs took the impact. The doctors could do nothing

about his injury. If they were to try to remove shrapnel and repair, Harold stood a chance of ending up even worse. It was decided to leave shrapnel inside and send him home. Harold escaped death while most of those he knew in his unit were not so fortunate. He was eventually stationed at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, where he felt welcome in a way nowhere else could provide. “Everyone on base treated me very well. They were always very nice to me,” Harold said. “It was great for me because I had the chance to stay at home because of how close my parents lived to the base.” For the first time in what was months, but felt like a million years, Harold Gudmundsson laid his head back down on his own pillow. But returning home wasn’t easy: regular facets of life felt like they were first-time experiences and he dealt with an uncontrollable readiness for combat, survivor’s guilt and PTSD. “I remember going to Torrance Beach with my friends and hearing the helicopters go down the shore,” Harold said. “I remember what that did to me.” This promising young man who was once in school was now gone. With every physical and emotional step, Harold felt Vietnam. He still does today, exactly the same with 52 years in between. “It just hurts.” That hurt has presented itself in life’s battles over the years, but it never stopped him from moving on and taking on the struggles that he has learned to combat. Battle and war did not give him any added strength; coming home, immersing himself in the love of friends and family, handling the horrors of Vietnam and finding peace at heart did.

Dana handled the sale of my mother’s house after she passed. His knowledge of the neighborhood and past sales was encyclopedic. He had a huge list of contractors, stagers, etc, and those who could help us get the house ready. He was responsive throughout the process and got us $100K more than any of the other 3 agents we had interviewed thought possible. EB, Rolling Hills Estates As a follower of real estate I make it a point to keep up with the current Palos Verdes market, trends and what is important to buyers and sellers. I thought I was quite knowledgable until I attended a fantastic lecture “Real Estate Realities and Myths” by Dana Graham, a top real estate broker in PV. FG, Rancho Palos Verdes Dana Graham is one of the best real estate agents I have ever used. He just gets the job done. He takes care of all the details from start to finish. He is always so positive throughout the whole process. His knowledge of the market and how buyers and sellers work is amazing. He is accessible (at all times!). He comes up with innovative ways to handle complex situations. Nothing is too hard for him to deal with. HW, Rolling Hills Estates I cannot recommend Dana highly enough. He was professional, helpful, responsive and a terrific communicator in assisting us in selling our childhood home after our mother’s death. In what could have been a very difficult transaction, both in terms of family dynamics and the condition of the house, he had a solution for every problem. He even assisted with, and directly handled, getting the house in shape to be shown as well as disposing of 60 years worth of contents. I recommend him without reservation! SW, Palos Verdes Estates

Lisa Boyd’s H o l i d ay H o s t i n g T i p s How to step-up your hosting game while keeping your sanity this holiday season: Tip #1- Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!!! Hosting is made manageable and even enjoyable when you plan-ahead. Clean, decorate, and prepare as many food dishes as you can ahead of time to ensure you enjoy the company of your guests this holiday season. Some of my favorite prepare-ahead Thanksgiving side recipes are below. And when it comes to dessert, let me help you prepare your make-ahead desserts through my online baking classes. We will prepare the dessert dishes together so you can get back to enjoying the company of your family and friends! Featured desserts this year are a Million Dollar Chocolate Mousse Tart and a Flavor Infused Apple Pie. Class listings and registration can be found at: www.BakerBoyd.com/classes Can’t wait to bake with you! Tip #2- Decorate with Fresh Ingredients There’s no better way to add a crisp freshness to your decorating then by incorporating fresh foliage and fruit to your arrangements. We live among some of the most beautiful foliage in the world. Get out there and bring some of it inside for your guests to enjoy as well! Pair these beautiful greens with fruits that complement the season. This decoration can take place several days and even weeks ahead of time (depending on your foliage and fruit). Check that off your list as early as you can, and then if your family is anything like mine, barricade the doors to the assembled room and keep those adorable but curious kiddos out!! Tip #3- Moderation is the key! How many times each year can you pull out your fancy silverware or unique napkins? If you are like me, there are not many occasions that call for such treatment. The holidays are a perfect time to make use of those special pieces that you don’t use every day. BUT - all in moderation. If you use nice glasses and silverware, save yourself some hassle and serve on dishwasher safe plates. Or if you just can’t resist pulling out your lovely china, then use something that requires less maintenance for dessert. No one needs to be cleaning up for days or even weeks after your guests leave. Try to keep it as simple as possible, while adding glamour here and there as you desire.

The transition from life to death for most of my clients is a slow process. Generally, we see an extended period of diminishing capacity prior to the inevitable occurring. During this time a trust can play an important role as the successors named in the trust can step in and help with many financial issues that arise. Furthermore, succession teams have broader powers when a living trust is complimented with power of attorney for business because as discussed in more detail below. Without the necessary documents, a court supervised conservatorship proceeding may be required, which is usually expensive and time-consuming. While having a court scrutinize every financial decision made can provide a great checks and balances, it is more often not what my clients want. Upon temporary or permanent incapacity, the successor trustee nominated in the trust manages the trust’s assets. This person is usually a spouse, a child, a relative, a friend or even a professional fiduciary. The successor trustee may have the power to handle financial affairs involving a residence, investment property or nonretirement accounts to name a few.

The successor trustee will not have the power to handle all financial matters though. So then, how do we handle financial matters such as retirement accounts, social security, life insurance, medical bills or even utility bills? The answer is through a power of attorney for business. The agent under a power of attorney for business is generally the same person as the successor trustee. Through an agent with powers vested in a power of attorney for business, one’s successors will have broader powers. Through the creation of some simple documentation, successors can be empowered quickly and inexpensively so that when incapacity arises, needs can be met by named successors.
