April Showers & Afro Unicorn Make History, Empower Dreams, and Inspire Many Written by Kristin B o rd e n | P h o t o s b y B re n d a C a s h

In the dynamic realm of entrepreneurship, April Showers emerges as a unique and steadfast force, turning dreams into reality with her Afro Unicorn brand. This Palos Verdes resident has made history by becoming the first blackwoman-owned brand to secure a full license for a character brand in major retail stores. In less than two years, April has transformed Afro Unicorn into a global phenomenon, with products gracing the shelves of Walmart, Target, JCPenney, Kohl’s, and Amazon. This is the inspiring story of a woman who blends creativity, determination, execution and a touch of magic to realize her dreams. Meeting April Showers at her Rancho Palos Verdes home, we were privileged to learn more about the woman behind the groundbreaking Afro Unicorn brand. Just before her appearance on CBS Mornings with Gayle King, where she discussed her Afro Unicorn Little Golden Book Series deal with Random House Publishing, April shared insights into her journey. April attributes her success to her supportive upbringing, citing her loving parents who instilled in her a strong work ethic and a kind, Christian background. Despite growing up in South Central Los Angeles, her mother ensured she explored diversely different areas of Los Angeles which ultimately fostered a drive for success and a different lifestyle. April, a highenergy executor, previously managed a real estate and insurance business and still owns a Farmers Insurance office in Long Beach. Her dedication to supporting long-time employees still at her office in Long Beach showcases her generosity and genuine character.

The Birth of Afro Unicorn

The genesis of Afro Unicorn is as enchanting as the brand itself. April was repeatedly dubbed a “unicorn” by friends due to her exceptional ability to juggle multiple aspects of life. Embracing this nickname, she made a decision to explore the concept of unicorns as magical and unique beings. She hired an illustrator to create an image that truly represented and looked like her, unknowingly giving birth to the Afro Unicorn brand. April’s belief in manifestation played a crucial role in Afro Unicorn’s journey to major retailers. The brand now spans over 25 categories, including apparel, accessories, toys, puzzles, books, bedding, backpacks, and more. With 45-plus licensee partners worldwide, April empowers entrepreneurs to manifest their dreams.

Positive Mission

Afro Unicorn isn’t just a brand; it’s a conscious movement with a clear mission. April is committed to uplifting and positively impacting women entrepreneurs. Beyond speaking engagements, her brand continues to be a movement with a social impact with the launch of the Afro Unicorn Foundation, led by extraordinary Executive Director, Kenyelle Ash. The Afro Unicorn Foundation is designed to make a direct impact on young girls by helping them to discover and uncover what makes them unique, divine and magical by nurturing them to become confident leaders of tomorrow. Afro Unicorn’s dedication to normalizing black beauty resonates with messages from mothers expressing how the brand has empowered their daughters to embrace their natural hair and be proud of it.

April was thrilled to be on CBS Mornings and interviewed by Gayle King

The Palos Verdes Experience

Although she has only lived in Palos Verdes for a little over three years, April feels a strong connection to the area. She has created a beautiful home on the Peninsula through hard work and focused determination. Her love for Palos Verdes is evident in her vivid and enthusiastic descriptions of its breathtaking views, serene landscapes, and lush greenery. She shares that the area serves as a haven for her to find inspiration and continue manifesting more of her dreams. She happily landed in Rancho Palos Verdes with her two sons after having visited the area for a wedding and experiencing its beauty and serenity. Now, she resides on a horse-themed-named street, which synchronistically aligns with the connection she has always felt towards horses…and now, unicorns! April credits her love for open spaces to summer visits to Louisiana as she was growing up.

Looking Ahead

For this motivated entrepreneur, it seems she will continue to use Palos Verdes as a sanctuary to peacefully recharge. April is currently pitching an animated series and an entrepreneurial game show, fostering young girls as they develop their businesses. When we asked her about the future and what she currently has in the manifestation queue, she smiled and quickly responded that she planned on being on Oprah’s Super Soul and one day having a theme park! While the success of April Showers and Afro Unicorn may seem like a result of manifestation, magic, and luck, after meeting this very disciplined, and intelligent woman, we know it’s much more. This is a story of lots of hard work, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of focused visualization. That is what has propelled Afro Unicorn to the forefront of the global entrepreneurial landscape. We can’t wait to see what the upcoming years bring for this motivated entrepreneur, as we know this is just the tip of the iceberg!

April’s ability to visualize success, sets her apart. She practices daily gratitude, writing down ten things she’s thankful for each morning, along with daily goals. Afro Unicorn has not only become a recognized brand but also found a place in major retailers, a testament to April’s determination and ability to efficiently execute an idea into reality.

The Heart of Palos Verdes

A Citizen of the Year’s Journey to Community Excellence Wr i t t e n b y M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o s co u r t e s y o f M a l a ga B a n k

“ I love to find solutions, support others, and make a difference whenever I can. Whether it’s raising funds for student athletes to play competitively, collecting food for those with food insecurities, or providing law enforcement with necessary equipment to keep them safe. The difference I make for others is what motivates me,” says the extraordinary Parton. James Rosas, Richard Rosas, Julia Parton Rosas and Edward Rosas

Julia Parton is undeniably the real deal, and her authenticity shines through her radiant, neverending smile as a deeply rooted Palos Verdes resident. She is currently basking in the glow of being honored as the Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. Her role as First Vice President, Business Development Manager at Malaga Bank is a significant motivator. “In 2023, Malaga Bank has supported over 80 partner organizations through either volunteer or financial support. I am the third employee from Malaga Bank to be honored with the Citizen of the Year award. This is a true testament to the bank’s strong community culture and involvement. There is no denying Malaga Bank is truly the ‘community’s bank!’” Parton graciously shared her story with Palos Verdes Magazine to connect with the community. Palos Verdes Magazine: Tell us about your connection to Palos Verdes? Julia Parton: As a lifelong resident of the Peninsula, I love the people first and foremost. I cherish the 20 | PVMagazine | December | 2023

strong sense of community, the area’s beauty, and its slower pace. Growing up in this close-knit community was comforting, making me feel secure. As an adult, I appreciate that this feeling has endured. The small-town atmosphere remains - people are connected and rely on each other. I love running into clients, friends, and neighbors while out running errands, or dining at Red Onion! PVM: What makes you a good leader? JP: Good leaders possess self-awareness, credibility, focus on relationship building, empowerment, presence, and authenticity. I believe I have many of these characteristics. I enjoy being part of a team and working alongside them to succeed. My strong work ethic, instilled by my parents, is something I value. PVM: Tell us about your career path. JP: I started working at the Daily Breeze in high school and enjoyed a career there for 26 years in various roles in the advertising department. I attended college at night to finish my degree from CSUDH. After the Daily Breeze acquired the Beach Reporter and Palos Verdes Peninsula

PVM: What motivates you to volunteer? JP: The benefits of community involvement, including valued relationships, mentors, and friendships, are tremendous. I’ve met lifelong friends through my community work. PVM: Why is Community Service important to you? JP: Non-profit organizations are crucial to our community, and they need support. The fact is that I love to help others. The satisfaction I get from helping is immense and I find the work important and necessary. I am the current President of the Rotary Club of Palos Verdes Peninsula, a 27-year member. Rotary’s motto is “service above self,” and we are people of action. This motto is something I have lived by for years. PVM: How do you spend your free time? JP: Most evenings and weekends I’m at worksponsored events, Rotary, community events, or board meetings. So, when I do have free time, I love spending time with family and friends, traveling to see my sons in college, attending baseball games, wine tasting, concerts, and enjoying quality time with my husband. My husband and I recently purchased a home in Arizona, a place we love visiting. PVM: What would you like people to say about you? JP: That I am sincere, genuine, gracious, happy, fulfilled, blessed, and a good friend to all. PVM: What makes you smile? JP: I am truly blessed with a caring family, a fantastic career, and good health. Since the Citizen of the Year honor, I have been approached by many to thank me for all I do for the community. That made me think about the difference I must be making. This made me smile. Beyond Banking:

Malaga Bank’s Enduring Commitment to the Palos Verdes Community Photo by Erik Jay

Since its establishment in 1985, Malaga Bank has been more than just a financial institution; it’s a steadfast supporter of the Palos Verdes community and a patron of local businesses. President and CEO, Randy C. Bowers, emphasizes Malaga Bank’s commitment to community spirit, stating, “At Malaga Bank, we champion the spirit of community. With genuine concern for both customers and the community, we stand as an example of support and connection that defines us beyond banking. We proudly support our community and patronize local businesses, recognizing that together, we create an environment of strength, resilience, and shared success.” Functioning as a full-service community bank, Malaga Bank addresses the financial needs of the entire South Bay, offering a range of personal and business banking products and loans that rival those of larger financial institutions. The bank’s philosophy revolves around providing a comprehensive array of financial products and services, coupled with top-notch hospitality and service. Despite the challenges faced by many community banks over the past 38 years, Malaga Bank has not only endured but has continued to grow. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the bank recognized the struggles of its customers, both businesses and non-profits. When the SBA PPP program became available, Malaga Bank took a hands-on approach, working closely with customers to secure approvals and facilitate loan forgiveness. Unlike other institutions, Malaga Bank opted to provide personal assistance to customers, assigning dedicated staff to guide them through the application process. For Malaga Bank, community service extends beyond banking services. The bank actively engages in sponsorships, fundraising initiatives, and encourages employee involvement on various non-profit boards. Employees contribute their time and efforts to support local non-profits and small businesses that are integral to the community’s prosperity. In embodying the spirit of community, Malaga Bank treats its customers as loyal friends, and its employees live and work within the community they serve. This commitment to community goes beyond financial transactions, creating a lasting impact on the well-being and success of Palos Verdes. 2023 | December | PVMagazine | 21

Malaga Cove Gift Shop Owner

Jürgen Käding

From Shopkeeper to Innkeeper: Meet the Longtime Proprietor of Corners of the World After more than 30 years on the Peninsula, Malaga Cove gift shop owner, Jürgen Käding is bidding adieu to Palos Verdes and saying bonjour to a farmhouse located in a little village in the south of France. “It’s beautiful where I am moving. My property has views of sunflower fields in the Tuscany of France. I have a 200-year-old farmhouse and over three acres. There is no traffic, it is a perfect location,” says Käding. Looking for a quieter life and ready to retire, the German-born proprietor of Corners of the World gift shop, who has traveled the world over and lived in six countries, says he loves his loyal customers and shopping for the unique one of a kind gifts the store offers. “I select items with great care and I love shopping. It gives me great joy. That I will miss a lot,” he says. Käding loves beautiful things and curating Corners of the World for the last 31 years has been his dream job. He plans to remain open until summer of 2024 when he will hang up his shopkeeper’s hat and put on his innkeeper’s hat. “In France I am going to open a bed and breakfast. It will be wonderful. I am not going to sit around but it will be quieter. I will putter in the garden and can manage my work how I please.” Along with the stunningly unique selection of gifts including one of a kind home decor, books and cards Käding’s colorful and delightful presence, his eye for refinement and beauty and his deep ongoing relationships with his customers will create a void in Malaga Cove. “I am going to miss this place and this community. I love my customers. I have seen many of them come in with their children over the years and now those children have children.” Käding hopes that Corners of the World will continue to flourish and be part of the community under new ownership. For now Corners of the World is filled with a delightful assortment of gifts from across the globe and the warm glow of the holidays fills the store and beckons customers.

Giving Gift Ideas for Teens Writ t e n b y A i d a n S h e n | J u n i o r C o n t r i b u t o r 11th g ra d e , Pa l o s Ve rd e s H i g h S c h o o l

The Christmas season, a time of joy, gift-giving, and love, is upon us once again. Before Santa slides down your chimney, ready to spread holiday cheer, he may need some help figuring out what teens are wishing for this year. As kids, our desires have evolved over the years, influenced by ever-changing trends and innovations. To gain some insight into the latest interests of teenagers, I decided to reach out to the Palos Verdes community to get a sense of what’s currently capturing the hearts and minds of local teens. We have long since passed the days of fidget spinners and Pokémon cards so what are all the hottest items on the kids’ wish lists this year? There are two main types of teen gift-getters. The ones who will ask for a new gaming console, and those like Abby Waisman, a student at PVHS, who “would rather receive a gift card or money” to be able to indulge in whatever gift they want. On the other hand, Maddie Ahn, another Senior at PVHS talked about how she’d “love an iPad for Christmas to be able to organize schoolwork better. It’s practical and a little more portable than a computer.” Personally, as someone who has recently gotten into buying clothes and adding to my repertoire, I would be thrilled with gift cards to thrift stores or clothing stores in the area. Some more mainstream stores to include which are always a good addition to somebody’s wardrobe are Target and Nike. Some thoughts from younger age groups in middle school and below expressed their love for brands like Brandy Melville. Here you can buy casual clothes, dresses, and accessories which are a favorite of Gracie Abe who attends PVIS. If these suggestions didn’t spark the perfect idea for the young people on your list, here are some more suggestions. For the people who love to spend time outside, some hiking gear or sports equipment could make a timely gift for when spring rolls around. One last creative thought to consider would be exploring the realm of do-it-yourself gifts. There’s a charm and personal touch associated with receiving a handmade item that appeals to everyone. Even those of us who may not consider ourselves particularly crafty can easily venture into the world of DIY with just a single YouTube tutorial, whether it’s crafting a candle or crocheting a piece of clothing. As we get ready to celebrate the holiday season, let’s keep in mind that the genuine spirit of this occasion is found in the unmatched delight of giving and seeing the smile you get in return. Merry Christmas Palos Verdes! 2023 | December | PVMagazine | 31

Terranea Resort Elevates Holiday Offerings with Gingerbread Experience On the evening of Saturday, November 25, Terranea Resort hosted its annual Celebration of the Season:Tree Lighting ceremony, turning the occasion into a joyous celebration. Guests immersed themselves in the festive atmosphere, seizing opportunities for photos with Santa, engaging in a delightful Build-A-Bear station, reveling in a mesmerizing Nutcracker ballet performance, and enjoying a scenic train ride around a portion of the resort’s vast property. Adding an extra layer of holiday cheer, Terranea went above and beyond this year by debuting a captivating Gingerbread Lounge. A gathering of delighted attendees marveled at the impressive resilience of gingerbread bricks that supported the roof of a towering structure. The ingenuity was not only in crafting these oversized bricks from essentially cookie materials but also in embellishing the roof with vibrant red shingles made from house-made gingerbread. The ephemeral delight, known as the Gingerbread Lounge, was just one facet of the delectable revelry unfolding at Terranea’s annual Tree Lighting event. Traditionally, Pierino “Perry” Jermonti, the resort’s executive pastry chef, has showcased grand gingerbread creations. However, this year, the culinary team aimed for new heights to enhance the overall experience. The walk-up bar’s foundation itself was constructed from the spiced biscuit-like substance. This family-friendly haven featured a walk-up gingerbread bar, where patrons could indulge in an array of treats, from cocktails and mocktails to hot cocoa, candied apples, and festive cookies—essentially every sugar plum imaginable. The lounge was complemented by a charming gingerbread village adorned with gumdrops, peppermints, and frosting snow. In the spirit of generosity, Saturday’s festivities were open to the public, with complimentary admission granted in exchange for unwrapped donations to Toys for Tots. The holiday spirit lingered beyond the Gingerbread Lounge, turning the celebration into a heartwarming kickoff for the festive season. Gingerbread Lounge open daily, Monday-Friday 4:00p.m.-10:00p.m., Saturday-Sunday, 2:00p.m.-10:00p.m. For more information, visit terranea.com/traditions.

Celebrating Over a Century of Service

Redondo Van & Storage

An Enduring Legacy in the South Bay For more than 100 years, Redondo Van & Storage has stood as a testament to commitment, community, and quality service in the South Bay and greater Los Angeles area. Since its establishment in 1919, the company has been dedicated to providing topnotch moving and storage services, evolving with the times while maintaining an unwavering dedication to its customers.

A Century in the Making

Redondo Van & Storage’s roots are deeply embedded in Redondo Beach, California, where it set up shop at 325 Diamond Street in 1919—a location that has served as the company’s headquarters for an impressive 104 years. The company’s commitment to independence and quality is evident in its unique status as an independent, family-owned, and operated business, distinguishing itself from larger national van lines in the moving and storage industry. Over the years, ownership changes have been minimal. Greg Halvorsen, an Ohio native with over six decades of local roots, has been at the helm for the past 45 years. In 1989, Greg and his wife

Laurie Inadomi-Halvorsen bought out their partners, the Sims family, and took over full ownership, expanding the fleet to 10 trucks and increasing storage capacity with four local warehouses.

A Family Business with Deep Community Connections and Roots

The Halvorsen family’s connection to the Palos Verdes Peninsula is not just a business affiliation but a deep-rooted commitment. Greg and Laurie’s ties to the community span decades, with Greg growing up on the Peninsula and graduating from Rolling Hills High School in 1968, as a distinguished quarterback. Laurie has been an active commercial real estate agent in the South Bay for over 35 years, and a major donor and founding member of the Peninsula Education Foundation’s Real Estate Honor Roll since its inception in 2008. She also served on the Board of Vistas for Children for 5 years as well as the Norris Theatre Board. Growing up, both sons have been involved in Rolling Hills Little League, Palos Verdes Peninsula 4-H Club, Vistas for Children, and Palos Verdes Performing Arts.

Van & Storage has donated moving services for the past 27 years. The company helps with the set up and break down of the iconic weeklong celebration under the white tent. Plus, all of the decorated trees that are auctioned off to raise money for the hospital’s projects are then delivered to the winners courtesy of Redondo Van & Storage. As Redondo Van & Storage looks towards the future, its commitment to quality service, community involvement, and family values remains unwavering. With Ryan at the helm, the company is poised to continue its legacy as a local household brand, embracing the next chapter in its remarkable 100+ year history.

The family’s commitment to community involvement extends beyond the business, with Redondo Van & Storage supporting local schools, theaters, charity drives, and events. This dedication has earned both Greg and Laurie the Switzer Learning Center’s South Bay Man and Woman of the Year awards, respectively. Moving Forward:

A New Chapter with Ryan Halvorsen

In 2018, the next generation of the Halvorsen family, Ryan, joined the business as Chief Operations Officer, bringing a wealth of cross-sector experiences to the table. Ryan grew up on the Palos Verdes Peninsula where he graduated from both Rolling Hills Country Day and Chadwick Schools. With a professional background that includes a Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs and management consulting for Accenture Federal Services, Ryan has seamlessly transitioned into a leadership role within the family business. Under Ryan’s guidance, Redondo Van & Storage has continued to thrive, earning accolades such as being voted the Best Moving Company in the Daily Breeze/Easy Reader for consecutive years as well as winning the 2023 Excellence in Business Award given by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Ryan’s focus on streamlining operations, expanding the business footprint, and building strategic partnerships has contributed to this success.

Quality Service, Community Commitment

Redondo Van & Storage’s range of services, including moving, storage, and packing, is tailored to meet the evolving needs of the local community. The company stands out by keeping all moving teams as in-house employees, ensuring a high level of quality control. A testament to its unique position in the industry, Redondo Van & Storage has received numerous accolades, including online designations as a Neighborhood Favorite on the NextDoor app. With over 75% of its business coming from repeat and referral customers, the company’s reputation for excellence speaks for itself.

BAKED BRIE

Whether you are hosting or guesting this holiday season, this baked brie appetizer is an easy, beautiful, and delicious way to begin any celebration! Choose your favorite jam, nut, and fruit combination, or pick ones whose colors match your theme. Your guests and friends will love it! Happy Holidays! Ingredients:

8 oz. brie cheese wheel ¼ cup raspberry jam (or any jam you like that fits your color scheme) ¼ cup pecan halves 2 tbl maple syrup ¼ cup fresh raspberries (or fruit you like) 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves 1/8 tsp Morton Sea Salt or Kosher salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine pecans, raspberries, and maple syrup on bowl. Toss to coat fully. Set aside. 2. Place brie round on oven safe serving dish. Cut a 1/2” deep “X “on the top. Place raspberry jam in the middle, then arrange the pecans on top of the jam. Bake for 10 minutes. 3. Take out of oven, arrange maple coated raspberries on top of brie and nuts, place back in oven for 10-15 minutes until cheese is warm and soft. 4. Sprinkle with salt and serve hot with baguette slices or crackers. Enjoy!
