Pv MAGAZInE TEAM Greetings Palos verdes! school has officially started in Palos verdes but for our household and many of my friends in the community, this school year is going to look much different. After recently returning from moving my daughter to college at TCu in Texas, I can honestly say it was an exhaust ing bittersweet experience. If you have been through it, you get it. My kids have both gone to school in the PvPusd since before kindergarten (valmonte Early Learning Academy) so driving through the community on a school day and seeing the line of cars to drop off or pick up stirs emotion. Although, my son still has two more years of high school, the realiza tion that these days are officially coming to an end has hit me. whether you are ready or not to send them off, it is just different. not bad different or good different, just different. so, to all the moms with littles struggling to make lunches or running late for carpool, it’s all going to be ok. I think right now the famous quote by Gretchen rubin, “the days are long but the years are short” couldn’t be more true. Enjoy the fleeting moments. we are so excited to share this issue with you. There are so many incredible things happening in the community. I was lucky enough to get invited to the PvPLC’s big announcement day at Catalina view Garden and when I heard the news, I knew we had to put this 96-acre land ac quisition story in the magazine immediately. This wildlife corridor is historic for the Peninsula. I also had the pleasure of visiting with the accomplished Bob Gold and hearing his very interesting and touching story. we thank Bob for opening up his home and bravely sitting down and being “open”. (I couldn’t resist.) we hope his experience inspires anyone that has a similar story. Thank you for your continued support. Please thank the businesses in this publication for helping the magazine to grow. Check out our community calendar and submit your event. we look forward to meeting you and hearing your stories! The Land Conservancy was awarded the larg est grant in the nation last year of $12.6 million from the u s fish & wildlife service’s Endangered species Land Acquisition program. This award demonstrates the national importance of the lands and ecosystems of drought tolerant and fire-resistant plants that support the endangered species in habitat managed by the Conservancy.

The Conservancy will launch a $30 million “Go wild for the Peninsula” fundraising campaign to provide for the corridor’s restoration. The 96acre coastal wildlife corridor connects coastal land to the contiguous Palos verdes nature Preserve above.  “ we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to protect and restore undeveloped coastal California land on the Peninsula,” said Palos verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Executive director Adrienne Mohan. “Precious coastal natural lands have all but disap peared beneath bulldozers and concrete, but this campaign, Go wild for the Peninsula, will benefit our communities, support threatened and endan gered species, reduce fire risk, and contribute to California’s 30 x 30 goal of conserving 30% of our lands and coastal waters by 2030.”

one of the rarest butterflies in the world resides in our beautiful community! the palos verdes Blue Butterfly

In the early 1980s, the Palos verdes blue butterfly (Glaucopsyche lygdamus palosverdesensis) was thought to be extinct until a sighting by a team of researchers at the defense fuel sup port Point in san Pedro in 1994. This rediscovery spearheaded a multi-organizational effort to bring the Pv blue butterfly from the brink of extinction to full recovery. As part of a multi-organizational partnership, the Conservancy grows the food plants, restores and maintains the habitat essential to the rein troduction of the species. According to biolo gist dr. jana johnson, who heads the Butterfly Project at Moorpark College, “The Conservancy’s work to restore this native habitat has been key to the recovery of the Pv blue butterfly.” over the past several years, thousands of Pv blue butterflies have been released into the wild. In addition to cultivating plants and creating habitat necessary for their survival, Conservancy staff and volunteers monitor the species’ host plant establishment as part of recovery efforts. Contributed by the Palos verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy

Conservancy have collaborated to acquire and conserve approximately 1,500 acres of land within our city. These beautiful lands can now be protect ed forever,” said rancho Palos verdes Mayor, david Bradley. “The acquisition of this 96-acre parcel will further protect the scenic landscape and provide a coastal wildlife corridor connecting the coast to lands above. This is a dream fulfilled for the found ers of rancho Palos verdes and residents through out the Peninsula. This success is the product of a long and strong partnership between the City and the Land Conservancy.”

The Land Conservancy has a proven history of successfully conserving natural land with beauti ful views for people to enjoy and restoring healthy ecosystems with native plants for beauty and for wildlife. Establishing the wildlife corridor will require extensive habitat restoration and fire risk mitigation work to help an array of endangered and threatened species like the Palos verdes blue butterfly, the El segundo blue butterfly, the Monarch butterfly, songbirds such as the Coastal California gnatcatcher, and rare local species like the cactus wren, raptors and owls, along with countless other birds and land mammals such as the grey fox. restoration efforts will include the removal of invasive plant species—through the help of volunteers and goats—and the addition of native plants local to the area. These plants provide food and habitat for native birds and butterflies connecting the coast and the land above in a wildlife corridor.

Life’s exciting adventures continued years later when he hired his future wife, Marcia at Lifetime. The two had become close friends at work, but Bob says he refused to date her at first. he recalls those early days with Marcia with a smile, “she said, ‘I love you’, and I said ‘well, I like you too’, and she said, ‘I want to take it to the next level’, but I told her it was unethical to go out because she worked for me. so she said “okay, then I quit.’” Although it was a slow process, Gold says that as he got to know Marcia, he realized what a fabulous and amazing woman she was. “I thought, why aren’t you giving this wonder ful woman a chance? so I called her. our first date was the closing ceremonies of the 1984 summer olympics.” By the third date, they were a couple, and within a month, they began living together. In 1986 the two married, and in 1988 they had the first of their three sons. Marcia’s parents lived in rolling hills, and they encouraged the young couple to buy a house nearby. “ so we moved to the hill. Marcia wasn’t sure at first, but rolling hills is spectacular. we didn’t have any friends on the Peninsula. we didn’t know anyone, but Marcia eventually con nected to many people through the women’s Club in rolling hills and also their temple, Con gregation ner Tamid, and as it happened, the Bob moderating at MESA

parents of our children’s friends became some of our lifetime friends. we were married for 33 years.” sadly, after 38 years together, Marcia got advanced colon cancer and passed away in 2018. Those early days in rolling hills were glorious for the Gold family. “ we moved here, and we fell in love with all of it. Marcia was a stay-at-home mom, and we felt like we were living in a resort. It’s so fabulous and I will always love it. I worked in Century City for so many years so coming home to this beautiful countryside and community was a dream for me. This is a ranch-style house; every thing is on one level. I love this house so much, I thought I would be here forever and ultimately die here. It was never my plan to have Marcia pass first. They say that man makes plans, and God laughs.” Gold says. The only thing I could do for her was to sit next to her and hold her hand. It was heartbreaking to lose my best friend and wife, Marcia,” he says. he’s very proud of the life and times he shared with Marcia raising their three boys who all went to Pv high school. The couple even collaborated on a book together, The shiny Penny, (a children’s book that captures a moment in their family history that exemplified love and teaching). Bob put the experience into words and Marcia illustrated the heartfelt story. coming out and moving Forward during this very emotional time for his family, Bob began to give some serious thought to how he wanted to live his life moving forward. This personal reflection lent itself to an understanding and realization. “I thought, well, maybe this is the time to open up and date men.” Luckily it didn’t take long until he found an excellent partner. “I came out at 65 with john, and now I’m 67, I think I always had these feelings and tendencies. I know I did, but there was a lot of shame. The perception I had when I was growing up was that gay people were not equal to others. I greatly admire everyone who has come out regardless of when, to live a gay lifestyle. when I came out, the reaction was gener ally okay, or Bob, I had always wondered. you know, most people could care less.” Gold confides. he is grateful his three sons embrace his partner, john Lee who is a local real estate agent. Bob al most died when he succumbed to CovId-19 before there was a vaccine. john explains, “Although I had it as well, I was asymptomatic, but Bob was very sick and not getting better. After about a week of Bob going from bad to worse, it was time to call 911.” Gold ended up spending 24 days in Torrance Memorial and 12 days intubated. he had a heart at tack while on the ventilator which led to total renal failure. The doctors told his kids to prepare for the worst. But Gold wasn’t ready to go, and today he feelsGoldexcellent.laughs when thinking about how fortunate he is. “now, the hardest part of my life, the most challenging part, is finding out how to bring all my kids together again in one place because they have such busy lives,” says the proud dad. “I have a very full, vibrant life. I’m incredibly blessed.” But don’t call him tough. “People say, you went through such a tough time with your wife, and the years of her cancer, and then months and months of rehab from that hospital experience, and wow, it’s so tough. It’s nice to see you happy now. well, it’s called life. It’s not tough. It’s you just deal with what life hands you, make the best, and go forward. you go forward in all things, no matter what happens. Because that’s why we’re here.

“I was with my wife for almost 38 years before she passed, and when it was time to date— I decided to open up my horizons and met a fabulous man. Nothing like coming out at 65! And you know what, most people have been very supportive.”

Softball All-Star State Champions

Soaring to the Top!

To see more photos of any of these events, please visit palosverdesmagazine.com/photo-galleries for the first time in the history of Palos verdes Peninsula Girls softball, the league has won the All-star state Championship! Twelve girls, ages 11 and 12, had one of the most successful runs in memory. After completing three invitational tour naments with a record of 12-1, with two tournament championships, the PvPGsL girls set their sights on a usA softball 12 and under All-star Los Angeles/ south Bay “C” district title. In winning the district Championship, the team went 4-0 with an average margin of victory of over ten runs. Competing in the southern California “C” state Championship is much more difficult. In addition to dealing with the oppressive heat of Lancaster over the fourth of july weekend, the caliber of competition from talented southern California teams posed a significant obstacle. The PvPGsL girls did not back down, going 7-0. That sounds easy, but it took two comeback wins (down 2 runs and 3 runs in the final innings) to stay in the win ner’s bracket. They took the state Championship, beating Aliso viejo 11-2. The team had a stellar offense, batting .453 as a team, and a crisp defense. what made this team unique was that this group of girls truly define teamwork. Each player made huge contributions, each had their moments to shine, and each player played in every single game. Most importantly, they played for each other. Although they finally lost in the “B” western nationals in Corona, CA, coming in 13th nationally, they amassed an All-stars season record of 28-3.

Probate is a court-supervised process where a will is validated by a Probate Court Judge. The process is very time-consuming and/or very expensive. By the conclusion of the proceeding, assets and liabilities have been addressed and accounted for. It is only then that the inventoried assets can be ordered to be distributed to beneficiaries in accordance with the intent expressed in the will.

When someone dies without a will, a similar process under the supervision of a judge takes place. Assets and liabilities are addressed in an orderly manner. Regarding distribution, there exists a statutory framework that directs the distribution of assets to heirs.

In general, probates drag on and can easily take well over a year to complete. Not only are they time consuming, but they are alsoProbatesexpensive.can be expensive because lawyer’s fees and executor’s commissions are based on a statutory fee schedule. The fees them selves are based on a percentage of the gross value of the assets… not the net value of the assets.

2022 | Issue 28 | PVMagazine | 33 onssrofPvPEIAL

In California where we have high real estate values, the fees can be astronomical. For instance, on real estate valued at $1,000,000 the statutory fee for the lawyer and the executor is $23,000 each. Extraordinary fees arising out of work relating to any sale of real estate can also be ordered.

Yes, probate can take time and is costly, but some clients prefer it over the administration of a Probate Avoidance Trust. Probate is often a great alternative when clients worry about combative heirs who might seek to frustrate their intent. In these instances, some prefer throwing their estate into a court supervised proceeding so that their potential combatants will have to answer to a judge. Living trusts are common instruments used to avoid probate. They can make the post-death transition more efficient at a frac tion of the cost for their loved ones. If you would like to learn more, most probate lawyers, including myself, offer a free initial consultation for those seeking to learn more.

Avoiding Probate Court is the Rule, Not the Exception

Once Letters Testamentary are issued the executor has a fourmonth period to address creditors and any claims they may make. During this period, the executor takes charge of the assets and pay debts. Often this four-month period goes well beyond four-months.Followingthe expiration of the creditor’s claim period, an ac counting with a request for final distribution can be prepared and filed. (I recently filed an account. The hearing date was set six months later. I can start and finish a Trust Administration in a shorter time frame.)

Contributed by Gregory Becker

For smaller estates, California does not require assets to be probated. A Small Estate Affidavit can be used to circumvent a probate when the value of an estate does not exceed $184,500. (For deaths prior to April 1, 2022, the maximum value is $166,250.)

In a typical probate, an executor named in the will starts the probate process after death. The executor files a petition in court seeking official appointment as executor. After approximately 45 days from filing the hearing to approve the executor occurs. After the judge approves the executor, the executor then sub mits Letters Testamentary to be signed by the judge. This should be simple enough, but it has been taking over 30 days to obtain signed Letters Testamentary.

CKW, Palos Verdes Estates

Without question, he’s extremely driven to get the job done and see you leave escrow satisfied. We’re very grateful for his time & effort in getting the home sold. Dana was responsible for a seemingly insurmountable situation, the Mt. Everest of real estate transactions, yet he did it!

Dana did a fantastic job for us when we sold my childhood home. He guided us on what things needed to be fixed and what to leave alone. He has a great resource of people who can repair any problems with the house. Dana put us in touch with someone who could setup and run an estate sale, remove anything that was left and leave the house spotless and ready for move-in. He handled advertising, escrow, and negotiating with potential buyers very smoothly. He was very available when we had questions. His advice on what to expect at each stage helped to make the process very smooth. We would recommend Dana very highly to anyone.

CE, Palos Verdes Estates Dana Graham is the most professional agent I have ever met. I have bought and sold many properties and Dana is the best agent by far.

A FEW

Dana handled the sale of my mother’s house after she passed. His knowledge of the neighborhood and past sales was encyclopedic. He had a huge list of contractors, stagers, etc, and those who could help us get the house ready. He was responsive throughout the process (he even loaned us his vacuum when ours was mistakenly packed up and sent off with the moving truck). He was a calm, firm, and creative negotiator, who got us 100K more than any of the other 3 agents we had interviewed thought possible. He stayed present throughout the process, making sure we got through closing smoothly. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

As a follower of real estate I make it a point to keep up with the current Palos Verdes market, trends and what is important to buyers and sellers. I thought I was quite knowledgable until I attended a fantastic lecture “Real Estate Realities and Myths” by Dana Graham, a top real estate broker in PV. FG, Rancho Palos Verdes Dana Graham is one of the best real estate agents I have ever used. He just gets the job done. He takes care of all the details from start to finish. He is always so positive throughout the whole process. His knowledge of the market and how buyers and sellers work is amazing. He is accessible (at all times!). He comes up with innovative ways to handle complex situations. Nothing is too hard for him to deal with. HW, Rolling Hills Estates I cannot recommend Dana highly enough. He was professional, helpful, responsive and a terrific communicator in assisting us in selling our childhood home after our mother’s death. In what could have been a very difficult transaction, both in terms of family dynamics and the condition of the house, he had a solution for every problem. He even assisted with, and directly handled, getting the house in shape to be shown as well as disposing of 60 years worth of contents. I recommend him without reservation!

we were part of the Pony Club but did not have our own horse. our entire family is petite, and my child was six at the time, so I wanted a small horse. one that she could learn on and not be scared. A former trainer helped us find Prince through a friend. What does your pony eat and are there any favorite treats he enjoys?

Where and why did you get your pet?

Prince does not really get treats; I am scared to give him too much sugar. he loves apples and carrots and healthy foods. just like for the kids, the pony also gets healthy food. What is the best part of having a pony?

In addition to learning to ride, it is a learning opportunity. The kids learn how much responsi bility it is to take care of a horse. some days you do not feel like cleaning after them, but it has to be done. one day everything is fun, the next day you may get bucked off during lesson. Through the ups and downs, the kids form a bond with the animal. I asked the kids what they liked best about their pony. Ava’s favorite thing about Prince is “that he is so calm”, while Luca says he likes that he “likes me so much”. do you have any advice for families considering get ting a pony? Anyone considering getting a pony should ask themselves “why do you want to get a pony?”

Think about if you will outgrow the pony and need to change to a larger horse later. you should think hard because you develop a bond with the animal. Also, in addition to the cost, consider that a pony needs attention, so you need free time and to be willing to spend your free time at the barn.
