Happy Social Media Valentine by: Claudia Andrews

V

alentine’s Day: the day all singletons and those in relationships alike, look forward to the thrill of being wined and dined, usually celebrated with an exchange of flowers, gifts and cards. It is a day where people wait anxiously in hope of receiving a sentimental gift or surprise as a validation of their ‘lovability’.

It is evident that social media provides us with instant responses to our everyday needs however; I can’t help but wonder if it robs us of the pleasure of tangible contact.

The traditional expressions of love on Valentine’s Day have recently changed, with a decline in the exchange of cards and gifts. This decline can be attributed to the growth of Social Media. The humble rose, cards and chocolates have been replaced by Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Blackberry Messenger. It is common to see trending topics such as #twittervalentine and #bemyvalentine as the day approaches, in an act to secure a cyber-valentine. An influx of sweet messages traded through inboxes and cyber space is sent on the day, something that used to be done with a simple card. It is no longer a surprise to receive a ‘poke’ on your Facebook wall as a gesture of admiration on that day.

Our tech savvy generation thrives on the instant nature of things, the very reason why social media has grown so rapidly over the years. Daily instant messages have replaced the drawn out Pen- pal, and conversations are kept alive with quick responses, emoticons, videos and audio. Social media has connected people all over the world and helped to create unusual friendships and relationships, enforcing the notion of a borderless world. Although it is a fantastic creation as it helps to bring the world closer, it has in turn created a distant world. As sweet as it is to receive a heartfelt message via social media outlets, it takes away from the experience because it reduces genuine interaction in real life. A day out with friends or a night out with a partner has been replaced by a simple ‘@cutegirl wishin u a happy Valentine’s Day’.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

We must observe nonetheless that it has opened opportunities for people to share in the experience of Valentine with cyber friends and loved ones. So what does this mean for future Valentine celebrations? Will the essence of giving and receiving gifts be lost in cyber space? Maybe the trade of words via social media helps us to value the essence of things. The lack of gifts might make us more appreciative of the messages that we receive and we might pay more attention to the sentiments behind the words that we receive. I like to view it as a lesson that: gifts and cards do not equate to the amount of love shared by two people. Thus, by cutting that out, we open ourselves to a world where we value life’s simply pleasures. Regardless of the outcome, we must commend social media for its contribution to communication in this modern world. The possibility of connecting with the world has now become endless. So, ‘big up’ to social media as we tweet, poke and instant message our way to the future. #Happy Valentine’s Day from @PanacheOccasions.

GUBA George Ameyaw is a proactive and idealistic individual. His passion for creating a better world drew him to the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards. George began working with GUBA due to their outstanding contribution to the Ghanaian and UK community, as he hopes to ensure that the efforts of unsung heroes do not go unnoticed. K

wame Amponsa known by his stage name ‘Mista Silva’ is relatively new to the Afro-beats scene.

After being in the UK Funky House and Grime industry, he decided to make music that reflects on his African background and found the Afro-beats genre to be the right choice. His formal music career began in July 2011, and has thoroughly worked to earn recognition in the heavily dominated AfroBeats scene. His first two hits became house hold names not just amongst the Ghanaian community but Africans as a whole and even compared to D’Banj in certain circles. ‘Boom Boom Tah and Bo Won Sem Ma Me’ continues to fill up many dance floors around the country. His talent and efforts has been recognised by many and led to his nomination for the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) award’s ‘Best Music Act’ 2012, as well as the GMA UK artist of the year 2012. Mista Silva won both fiercely contested awards beating fellow talented artists and nominees like Fuse ODG and Brie Boateng. He was honoured with the GUBA award at the glamorous, celebrity packed and well attended GUBA awards ceremony which took place on the 10th of November 2012 at the Park Plaza Hotel. Mista Silva acknowledges divine leadership as one of the reasons behind his decision to join the afro-beats scene. In an interview

with the GUBA awards recently, he expresses that, ‘these awards shows that people acknowledge my music and this motivates me to work harder. The GUBA award was the first award I have ever won and I will always cherish it’ On the notion that there is constant violence in popular music, he draws inspiration from knowing that he is presenting the youth with an alternative, with the hope that his music can encapsulate the youth with its nonviolent approach. Projecting the Ghanaian and African culture through his songs, he hopes to send the message that: Africans in the diaspora are playing their part in putting Africa on the map. Alongside music, Mista Silva is also part of an Events Management Company known as Fresh to Death Entertainment. Fresh to Death Entertainment which organises and hosts a series of events across the UK. His next single ‘I KNOW YOU LIKE AM’ is due out this February 2013 and will be available on iTunes. He looks to make his mark in the next couple of years stating: ‘In the next 5 to 10 years I hope to have fulfilled my purpose on earth. I believe that God has a vision for all of us and I hope that I can find mine and achieve it. In doing so, I also hope that I can inspire others to follow their purpose and believe in themselves for hard work is always key, he concluded. .

Lekan Olujinmi

Exclusive interview with Russell Andrews the Director of “The Diary Of Black Men’’. By Lekan

R

ussell’s journey with “The Diary of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman?” began in 1986 when after two very well-received performances, at Houston’s Ensemble Theatre, an opportunity came to cover a character in The Diary Of Black Men at Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre. After that single performance Russell Andrews was asked to be the sole understudy for all 6 male characters as well as the assistant to the director and technical staff.

With The Diary’s phenomenal success, Russell spent the next two years covering all of the 6 roles, while continuing to drive “the van” across the country several times, ironing the costumes, moving the props and carrying the luggage for the cast. The opportunity to take a permanent role in the play came at the famed Towne Hall Theatre in New York City where, while keeping his position as technical assistant, he took over the role of ‘The Intellectual’ and never looked back since that day.

Olujinmi Russell started StageWalkers Productions as a way to not only draw youth to the theatre but also to have them participate in the process. He and his wife, writer, Katrina Andrews founded the company upon their arrival to Los Angeles from New York in 1997. The couple had been volunteers and mentors at the Hollywood YMCA and The Assistance League of Southern California’s Children’s Club in Hollywood when they produced their first venture, the west coast premiere of a staged reading of August Wilson’s Jitney. The overwhelming success led to its mainstream production in New York City, directed by Marion McClinton in which Russell played the role of Youngblood that won numerous honours including, the NAACP Image, Off-Broadway’s Obie and later London’s prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. How did you feel becoming the Director and the Producer of this Theatre Classic – “The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman” after you started as one of the youngest actor on the stage? Elated, but not for the obvious reasons. This journey has been altogether rewarding and at times absolutely baffling. I’m the only actor in 25+ years of The Diary Of Black Men that began as an understudy and tech crew, moved on stage as a principal character, performed every male role in the play throughout America and abroad and is now the director and producer.. For the last 15 years I’ve had the honor of studying and performing with some of the giants of The American Theatre including

being both a student and protégée of the late director Claude Purdy and of the world’s greatest playwrights August Wilson. Those years as well as my early days with The Diary Of Black Men armed me with the ability to continue what I consider is more than just a play. Growing with The Diary Of Black Men as a young man until now has also allowed me to see my personal growth, yet, I find it all disheartening at times when I think that after a quarter of a century we still, as black men, have not collectively figured out how to consistently/effectively communicate and grow with our black women. Why did you want to become a Film Star/ Actor? Totally by accident. I was an accomplished football player in the state of Texas and went to college (University) on a scholarship. I had a career ending injury and my professional dreams were shattered. I’d studied Sociology and Psychology and after physical therapy left school and took a job in The Texas Department of Corrections prison system. After about 5 years of that, a friend took me to an audition at a community theatre in Houston (The Ensemble Theatre) where I was cast in 2 consecutive plays, met the men of The Diary Of Black Men, was offered the job as understudy/roadie and after 25 years my career has proudly come full circle. TV and Film is a natural progression for most actors and I’ve been successful but theatre is and always will be my first choice. Russell what advice would you give to young budding actors trying to get into the Film/Entertainment Industry? There is a book called “How To Be A Working Actor” which is a must read. It has several

editions but all have the same information. Read it! Including the preface, forwards, etc. One of the first lines in the first chapter says (paraphrasing) “if you can do anything else as a career...do it.” It goes on to say that if you have read this far and still want to pursue a career as an actor here’s what you’ll need. First and foremost, a real job. 70% of actors make an average of $4,000 $10,000 a year as an actor if they’re lucky. And most of those will never be on TV or in a film. Of those, most have jobs waiting tables, temp jobs, babysitting whatever they have to do to chase & sustain a career. Like I said, read it thoroughly. Then practice, practice and keep practising. It’s better to be prepared and have nowhere to go, than to have somewhere to go and not be prepared. Who is your favourite Actor, Actress or Icon - tell us why? Most of my true favourites have been on stage but I can watch Sidney Poitier and Meryl Streep and James Earl Jones, Sean Penn do anything...anything. However I really like Loretta Devine, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angela Bassett and Jeffrey Wright. The British have yet to see this film but Middle of Nowhere directed by Ava Duverney, is a Black Indie that you can take the story and entire cast and make them my complete favourite ensemble of any I’ve seen in quite a while. What are your plans for 2013 & beyond within the Arts? The film and TV series of The Diary of Black Men. Think I’m playing? Watch me. If you could make a Film or a Theatre Production with anyone dead or alive, who would you choose and why? I would direct the film that details the love affair between Diahann Carroll and Sidney Poitier. She’s a very close friend and that

story has fascinated me for years. I would like to play Levee in in the film of August Wilson’s Ma’ Rainey’s Black Bottom. It’s a dark and fascinating piece that among other things ask the question, “If God exists, is he just?” I live for those moments. What would you like to teach the young & others from what you have learned over the years as a Star Actor? See movies, read books, talk to people, do charitable work, give your time to children, love deeply, see the victory in your losses, trust and don’t lie to yourself...and for God’s sake get out of your own way! This will be an anchor for your life and career. The only one that can stop you from receiving your blessings is you! How was it working with The Klub International Management Company for the very first time back in 1989? As conscious, committed and gifted as any I’ve known. Not only were we a massive success in England, the respect and attention given to us in our first venture abroad was like going home. By the time we got there Lekan Olujinmi, the engine that powered the marketing campaign made us and the production a household name. All we did was what he said we’d need to do. That experience can’t rival any I’ve been associated with to date. that’s why we are both the last guys standing on this great theatre phenomenon that is The Diary Of Black Men - How Do You Love A Black Woman. What did you love most about the Arts/ Drama when you were a young child? Truth. I’m not much of a fiction person. What is your experience of what can be considered as Real Love? Ha! Real Love I assume is Love that you

want to be in with someone who wants to be with you. I read somewhere that beyond family we only get a handful of people who will truly love and care about us. And it’s not impossible that we will never meet them all or we may have met them and didn’t know. I think insecurity in people, particularly we black men, clouds our judgement and we tend to overlook the Real Love we have in front of us. Do you tend to make New Year’s Resolutions? When I was a young man I did. And it’s not that I didn’t want to keep them, it’s just that life becomes so demanding, and if you are blessed to have a family and bring children into that equation, then your time if there’s any left, is spent just trying to be the best father and human being you can be. If losing weight, stopping a habit or being more active in church fit under that umbrella then congratulations. I chose to do what I can, for who I can, when I can. Please can you tell your many fans, ‘What keeps you inspired to stay in the Film Industry after so many years’? Well, I tell you... while I respect those that have given their time and attention to my work, there are others of us who do more and less yet always bring truth and life to the written word. It is a life like no other. To captivate an audience and to reflect a thought, pain or joy they once experienced is enough to keep me going. Aside from my family, the rehearsal period is my ultimate joy. The discovery and development of characters and story. My children were literally born if not raised backstage. To have a career made up solely of stage work is my fantasy of sorts but I have responsibilities that Film and TV afford me.

Not to mention I have a healthy ego to feed. Are there many new changes within the production from when it last toured England? If so can you tell us about one or two? Details! As I said earlier we black men and women are still trying to figure out this western post-slavery existence we are in. My journeys through life and theatre as well as being amongst people around the world have opened my eyes to my flaws and confusions as well as my needs and desires. HOUSE & HOME 10 MINUTES WITH OUR RESIDENT PROPERTY COLUMINST & AGONY SISTER:

MARIE PARRIS who is available to assist with any residential lettings dilemmas. If you have a question for Marie please forward your enquiry to: info@panacheoccasions.com

Marie Parris

ASK MARIE:

Resident agony Sister answers readers questions: THIS MONTH MARIE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION ON WHAT TO DO IF A TENANT DIES. I have been a landlord now for over 10 years and recently one of my tenants has died and I have no idea of what I should do. He has been a tenant of mine for the last two years Can you please advise? It is always sad when this happens, but you need to approach this with sensitivity and practicality. Because you have told me very little you need to establish the following: • Was their name on the tenancy? • Do they have succession rights? It is important to note at this stage what type of tenancy did they have with you, because the rules and laws will be different depending on what type of tenancy agreement you had. • Is it a regulated agreement, an assured agreement or an assured shorthold tenancy agreement? • Is the tenancy in a fixed term or periodic? As you mentioned he has been one of your tenants for the last 2 years I am assuming it is the latter type of agreement but you do not mention whether your tenant died in a fixed term or periodic – and it is important to find this out also. Do you have any next of kin details? If you do it is important that you contact them as soon as possible. As good practice, every landlord

should ensure they record next of kin details, which I have been advising clients for years, because it is not until you are in a situation like this that you realise how important they can be. Assuming his name is on the tenancy, is he a sole tenant or is there another named tenant? If there is another named tenant, as joint tenants they are jointly and severally liable. Therefore, the tenancy is expected to continue on the same terms, unless the existing tenant decides to end it. If he is a sole tenant – then there may be an issue for succession depending on a number of things. • Was there someone living there with him at the time of his death? • How they are related and how long were they living there before he died? Is this the first succession? Only one succession is ever granted if there is a case for one. The other thing that you need to establish is whether there is a will. Just because a tenant dies does not mean that the tenancy ends. Contact the Executor of the will, the deceased next of kin should be able to give you those details. If the tenant died intestate (without a will) then the estate is liable for all rents under the tenancy term. If there are no relatives then contact the Crown Office.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

I feel it is very important that you handle things compassionately, because as well as assisting the family on a practical level (dealing with the removal of the deceased possessions etc), you are probably feeling a little anxious about how you are going to make the next mortgage payment. If there is no succession right or no one wants to inherit the tenancy then the best way for all parties is to end it. This is simply done by a Deed of Surrender. If there is no money in the estate, the family would be as keen as you to ensure this is dealt with swiftly. Remember you can end a tenancy by serving a Section 21 notice at the end of any fixed term and in a periodic tenancy by giving the appropriate notice and serving the correct documentation. Bear in mind that the family of the deceased have funeral arrangements to deal with and ending the tenancy may not be their first priority, but you need to act quickly once you have ascertained some of the points above. It is really about how deep are your pockets combined with your compassion whether you will bill the family for the rents during the period they have gone unpaid. Just a word of warning, I do hope you have dealt with registering the deposit etc correctly, because I have heard of the deceased estate making a claim for damages against landlords. So consider what I am trying to convey to you in my paragraph above. Disclaimer: Letting a property creates a legal relationship between the Landlord and the Tenant. I

f your problem persists, your perspective needs to shift!

So it’s 2013 and for most of us we’re back into the full swing of things. Back on the treadmill, back to the grind and for a lot of people - backs against the wall. With the recent news in UK of HMV and Jessop’s going into administration it’s almost as if we are desensitised to the inevitability of our economy going further into decline. But, and it’s a big but - this is where you come in. We need entrepreneurs more than ever because we all know that successful small businesses are the life blood of our economy. However, a lot people, those you may know, or maybe you reading this email for some reason just can’t make it happen. Be it a new project, a new business or a new element to their existing venture. I’d like to suggest that this time around you take a new perspective on your challenges at the top of the year. Because if you don’t then you’ll simply set yourself up for another year where you didn’t quite make it happen. Now I’m not going to tell you how to overcome your challenges, only you can work that out, but I’d like to give you some tools to help you work it out. So here are 3 things you can do that will really make a difference: 1. Take an honest look at why you’re doing / starting the project or venture

Hall you have on the table. Are you doing it for the money or to really add some value to whoever your customers or clients are? This year, people are going to want products and services from people who are genuine, not people who just want to make a quick buck. The consumer sense of excellence has heightened and can tell genuine from hustler - Which one are you?

2. Think objectively. Most people are ‘married’ to their idea or regard it as their ‘baby’. We attached emotionally charged terms to what should be an objective - Creating a successful business. This doesn’t remove passion, just emotion. So get some third party advice from someone in business who doesn’t know you that well. If you’re not connected with someone through the social or business networks who you can reach out to, then feel free to ask me. Just expect an honest response. 3. Having thought ‘why’ you’re doing this project / venture you now need to look at the ‘what’. That is, ‘what’ are you trying to achieve. Some businesses have a ‘see how it goes’ approach which sometimes works by accident but can equally not work by accident. It’s OK to want to just have something that ticks over and pays the bills and it’s also OK to want you venture to change the world. Just focus on one or the other and be sure about it. As with most things in life the application of knowledge is more valuable than the dictation of knowledge.

3 Simple Steps To A Loving Aromatherapy Massage

F

By Leah Salmon

orget chocolate hearts and pink champagne! Show the one you love how much you care by treating them to an indulgent aromatherapy massage. Aromatherapy is an ancient practice of using essential oils, extracted from herbs, flowers and spices to naturally heal, nurture or restore balance and vitality in many areas of your body. These very concentrated oils are normally diluted into carrier oils then applied to the skin, scalp or hair, where they are absorbed into the skin and carried throughout the body to where they are needed. They are gentle but powerful when used correctly and can even be a side effect free alternative to chemical drug therapies for minor symptoms. An effective and popular way to apply them to skin is using massage. Warming essential oils blended into a carrier oil, then rubbing them onto skin helps them to be absorbed more easily and massage by nature is relaxing, soothing and a very sensual way to connect with one you love.

Some essential aromatherapy oils you can use to massage your partner are: • Geranium • Rose Otto • Lavender • Chamomile • Patchouli • Ylang Ylang Add 3 drops any one of the above to 3tbsp (approx 10mls) of a carrier oil like: • Olive oil • Coconut oil • Jojoba oil • Shea butter • Cocoa butter • Avocado oil • Jasmine oil • Vitamin E Oil Now follow these 3 simple steps Step 1 – Set the mood First make your oil blend by putting the carrier oil in a cup and sitting it in a bowl of hot water for a few mins to warm it up. Place the essential oil nearby and extra carrier oil in case you need it. Put on some soft music, warm the room, turn off the lights, light some candles and burn some incense if your partner likes it. Get a bowl of very warm water and place it in front of the chair and a soft towel. Prepare a comfy chair that your partner can sit in that you can stand behind and in front of. Once the room is ready, invite your partner in.

Step 2 - Massage Time Once your partner is sitting comfortably, take their shoes and socks off for them and place their feet into the bowl of water. Add the essential oils to the warmed oil, rub your hands together vigorously to warm them and then pour about 1tbsp of the blend into your hands to massage their neck and shoulders. Starting at the top of their neck use your thumbs to rub small circles down their neck and them use your whole hand to massage their shoulders. If your hands get dry, apply more oil. Massage for about 5mins. Next kneel in front of them and rest one of their hands on a pillow so you can massage it. Rub some oil into each finger them massage their palm, the back of their hand and wrist before doing the same to their other hand. Finally, use the rest of the oil to massage their feet. Take one of their feet out of the water, dry it on the towel and begin to massage oil into each toe, the sole of their foot, the top of their foot and finally their ankle before moving onto their next foot and doing the same. The whole process should take about 30mins Step 3 – Relax Now the massage is over, spend some time having a chat, enjoying a cuddle or just being silent together, so they can enjoy the relaxing after effects of the massage and you can relax with them. Take care, stay healthy and enjoy Leah The Naturally You Coach P.S. If we’re not already friend on facebook or twitter, let’s get connect. Body Fitness Tips It’s February

Top Fat Loss Tips For VALENTINES

D

by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

o you remember what New Year’s resolution you made at the beginning of this year? Did you stick to it? According to studies, there’s around an 88% chance you will have answered “no” to that question. Research shows that 88% of New Year’s resolutions made end up in failure. In fact, many people don’t even stick to their resolutions past the first week.

HEALTH

If you’ve resolved to lose weight and get fit in 2013, you’re in good company. Losing weight consistently tops the list of resolutions for the New Year, with statistics showing that seven out of every 10 of our family members and friends are now overweight or obese. We make resolutions at the start of each year. And while some of us might stick them out all the way to February (!), very few people achieve lasting health and happiness this way. Instead, most resolutions are so joyless and restrictive that you just can’t wait to revert to your previous bad habits. So how can you ensure weight loss success this year?

EXERCISE

This year, how about making a New Year’s resolution that anyone can keep; resolve not to make any more drastic resolutions. Instead

of limiting yourself to a once-a-year all-out assault, try setting yourself more realistic, long-term goals. Keep at it and you’ll soon find you’ve enjoyed more than just a onemonth fling with good health but If you think you’ll feel better over the next few months by closing the curtains and settling down in front of the TV, think again. Research has repeatedly shown the ill effects of not doing exercise, including an increased risk of viral infections, diabetes, heart disease and even premature death. In contrast, regular exercise boosts your immune system and increases your life expectancy.

NUTRITION

In a bid to get quick results, many people ignore their body’s need for healthy nutrition by trying extreme, highly restrictive diets. For longer lasting results, try applying the energy you spend searching for quick-fix solutions to simply cutting down on portion sizes and making healthier choices every day. If you can’t comfortably follow your chosen approach for the rest of your life, you’re wasting precious time. Remember that giving into temptation doesn’t mean that all your hard work goes down the drain; healthy eating is about the big picture and an occasional splurge doesn’t need to kill your efforts. By still enjoying your favorite foods from time to time you’ll find it easier to stay motivated all year long.

T h e Source My work speaks of the ‘Beginning’ and the ‘End’, the stem and the leaves, the ‘root’ and the ‘fruit’

From the ‘Beginning’ The soil for the seed, the land itself. The foundation and structure, the substance and raw material The clay The earth and the deep earth, The clay that holds trees in soil.

From the ‘End’

Objects in vessels such as flowers, water and soil recycling life’s essence - never ending. The ‘Source’ represents the start of every vessel I make; The inspiration, the ideology and the unspoken word, representing vision, feelings and cultural experiences. The transference of inspiration into invention, innovation into Art, through bringing dust to life and life, to imitate nature itself as a secondary essence of creation.

So does MY CRAFT AS AN ART FORM; It feeds off my culture and draws from its traditions as one would draw from a well to quench thirst. It has its roots in the language of my forefathers. The eyes feed off this rich abundance of heritage and adorns its splendour, as the mouth feeds off African food when cooked in its native clay furnace. It reminds me of the infusion between the village traditions and culture And the ethics which are passed down from generation to generation. This fusion has a silent voice and speaks of individuality, beauty and family. My silent voice being emulated through my craft; representing the continent revealing my contemporary fresh new light, life of Art, Every handmade ceramic I create tells a unique story of a rich measure, culture, texture, mixture and splendour; valuing a people indigenous to the motherland (Africa). www.facebook.com/asantheartist. please like my page thanks.

Finding the Guru Within Retreat By: Esther Austin

I

managed to catch up with Earl Talbot, Karmic Coach www.theinnerguru.co.uk and www.karmiccoaching.com.

Earl runs the, Finding the Guru within Retreat, which focuses on holistic wellbeing. (The next one will held in October 2013). Earls shares more about what that means and how he personally maintains such a state of being. He shares with us why it is important and gives us an insight into his passion and commitment to serving humanity by empowering individuals to find their own inner guru. He offers them a platform to explore, express, make friends with and communicate with their own divine inner guide. In a nutshell who is Earl Talbot? Earl is your ordinary guy that has responded to the calling to take part in his hero’s journey to fulfil his life’s purpose. And what does that mean exactly? I have been fortunate enough that a mentor of mine woke me up from the matrix. I was in the normal rat race situation until someone introduced me to alternative ways of viewing the world and life and as such tuning into what I was born to do and to fulfilling that purpose.

Why did you choose the name “Finding the Guru Within”? I chose this name because in my search for really connecting and understanding things on a deeper level and looking for teachers and guru, what I found was that when they told me something it was as if I already knew within myself what they were telling me. Then this took me on a process on a journey of deeper understanding self. We all have all the information, knowledge and truth within self and we must learn to trust this process from within. Hence the inner guru. You are not looking outwardly for that knowledge and learning it is intrinsic in our own DNA, ancestry and nature. What is so important about seeking to find the Guru within? It is not so much that it is important to seek the inner Guru. I do not heavily advertise. It is important, that someone who has awakened to their calling innately knows they want to journey within, knowing that there is something greater or they are greater. My work creates a space where they can explore this guided and safely

In this instance, it was about also awakening people to their life purpose by facilitating them increasing their awareness about who they are and about their qualities and abilities and what they can contribute to the world, I.e. community, family, society, humanity.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

It’s not a case of shouting from the roof tops that everyone should seek to find the guru within. My work is more for those who have a desire or need or who have started to become more aware of this inner guidance and wisdom. I create a space for them to find that inner connection. It’s equally important for individuals to recognise and realise that my work is for those who feel ready to be deeply awakened, not for those who are not in that space or ready to awaken to their calling, because they simply might not be ready for this part of their journey.

themselves. So in effect, I literally came across this by accident. How long have you been doing the retreats? I’ve been doing the retreats in Thailand since 2007 What to you is important to live a happy, abundance blessed and balanced life? Knowing yourself and over-standing yourself. I believe that alternative to this question, when you are in pain, is when you reject, judge and no longer love any part of yourself. That is where pain is and where you find disease. What are you own personal spiritual beliefs and practices and why are these important? I practice meditation and exercise. To me exercise is a spiritual practice. It’s the intent behind things rather than what you do. If I had a religion I would say that it would be life. I am not in a mutually exclusive club; I am in an inclusive club. Everyone is united in this thing we call life.

Why did you initially start the retreat? I was doing coaching, guided meditation and healing. I went for a detox for myself and in the process of doing the detox I encountered other people who were also detoxing who were intrigued as to what my background was. I explained what I did and ended up doing some sessions and what I found was that the results were far more effective and profound when I had done the detox whilst others were going through the process

In your eyes why are people beginning to seek inner peace and truth? We are in a system where we are a collective species and as such we are awakening to a transitioning time. It’s a change of cycle like the seasons change and we are wakening up to a new time and era of transition.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

Why do you think this is happening at this moment in time? Because it’s time! And the reason why we all know it is time is because we sense it. The interesting thing is whether you are aware of it or ignore it or and it’s time for transformation, the question is, are you going to act on it? Ultimately transition will happen and anyone aware and open to it will be bought into alignment and there will be those trying to holding onto the past may experience suffering which will cause dis-ease. The banking systems, organised institutions, institutionalised religions, unethical governments and any form of control system that we have seen that oppresses and exploits people will begin to fail, we are seeing a big shift in that now.

If you inherit and accept a negative or limiting belief that someone has passed onto you, you have become infected and this is another level of toxicity. We then have to move deeper beyond and beneath to purge them, but more importantly when putting the building blocks back, I look at whether the belief serves you and what is the purpose of holding onto it. In practise the person goes through a physical detox for three and a half days and the other three and a half we explore the thinking patterns, belief system and behaviours. Sometimes we use behaviours to try fulfill a need within us, which we are exploring outside of us.

In closing – is there a quote or saying you can leave with the readers which has either touched you or which you feel can inspire someone on their journey? One that stands out for me is this one by How does your retreat propose to deal with Carl Jung - “Your vision will become clear supporting someone to find these inner only when you can look into your own heart. qualities? Who looks outside dreams. Who looks inside Going for a body and mind detox means awakes.” clearing the channels to allow the wisdoms to come through. Effectively when people There is so much mis-information out there. cleanse and get a much deeper understanding If more people would only look inside their of themselves, leaving them empowered so heart they would get a much clearer vision they can organise their beliefs, values and not only for themselves but for the planet. channel emotions rather than being unaware and potentially at the mercy of unwanted If you want to find out more about Earl’s work feelings and thoughts. or to book on his retreat please visit www. theinnerguru.co.uk or Email: earltalbot@ Effectively they become more congruent and karmiccoaching.com become more fully accepting of themselves because they are understanding themselves on a much deeper level. Cleansing out the chemical and emotional toxicity and then the cleansing our thought processes that we inherit or take on from other people is important because often times when someone infects us, we take this on and affects all areas of our lives. My husband introduced me to Earl about 8 years ago now and he and other friends have always spoken about Earl in such high regard and respect. Those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting Earl will know what I’m talking about those of you who haven’t will know why when you do! You may ask why I talk of Earl in this way and here’s your answer, because he is everything that he appears to be no more, no less. He says what he means and he means what he says always, you always know where you are with him and in turn because he asks the right questions allows you to be your true self. When Earl first mentioned FGW 08 to me back in 2007 I don’t think I even allowed him to finished what he was saying about it, I just said “yep I’m there” no hesitation, no 2nd thought because I was ready and from that point on I never looked back. Since that day when I chose to be a part of FGW 08 my life and soul began on its journey towards what I can only describe as a rollercoaster of emotional and physical waves that showed me exactly who I have always been but have never allowed to shine through. When I began this journey, I didn’t expect to begin from my first commitment to FGW I had thought it would be about Thailand itself but I was pleasantly surprised of my capacity to learn from my own experience of life and having a slightly different outlook and approach, minor tweaks make so much difference and trust me it hasn’t all been a walk in the park, as well as the ups there have been many downs and it is these that teach me the most about myself and others, which have helped me on my journey. Through the 9 months leading up to FGW 08 I was in contact with Earl by phone and email and these

conversations were enlightening, thoughtful and interesting. He always gave me food for thought and I feel that I also made it interesting for him by allowing him to see and be a part of my journey. Thailand, beautiful, serene, spiritual, awe-inspiring Thailand. For me, was a trip of a life time and for this I have 7 words to say to Earl and that is ‘THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY’ was the first time I have been but will definitely not be the last. If you feel that it is your time to embark on such a journey (and you will know when the time is right for you) then I would say without a shadow of a doubt “do it, do it now”! Experiencing a 3.5 day detox did wonders for my health, my strength, my sleep you name it. There were of course draw backs which were moodiness etc but all very temporary. My main aim for my journey was to release some caged demons that I have been carrying around with me for a very long time, and to realise my capabilities as a human being. Earl has helped me to begin to do that, I have other things that I need to do but now that Earl has been a beautiful guide in this happening I now have the tools to carry on. Thailand was the catalyst for this, now my life continues on its new found path. If I had to pinpoint 1 memory that was a real turning point for me, it would be our group trip to Nuang Waterfall. A truly self enlightening experience for me and one which will never be forgotten as it has been permanently imprinted on my soul…

“When I began my journey to Find My Guru Within my main outcome was Confidence and Direction. I had come to a stage in my life when I recognised that I could achieve anything and the only thing holding me back was me, my inner voice or lack of confidence.

I kept on putting off important meetings or personal goals as I just kept talking myself out of it before I even began. During my week with Earl and Inka my internal dialogue became quiet and positive and began to work with me instead of against me, helping me put plans into action and ideas into reality. All of this happened on such a subconscious level that I knew I had changed I just couldn’t put it into words. It is only now that I am back home and I find myself looking back at how I would have previously felt and behaved that I now realise my confidence has doubled and I actually feel myself holding my head up high, seeing challenges as exciting opportunity’s rather than approaching them with trepidation and fear. And my goals are now on the way to becoming my reality!! To sum it up I feel as though I have been polished, shiny and new. I am still me only a whole lot better.

Gabriela (Mexico)

“I am very happy with the results , I feel more confident with my mission and a stronger feeling that I have the potential in me to do what I want to achive in life, you have been a great help, to get in me that confidence that I need inside. The exercise we did at the beach, that help me to recognise which are the values that I live with which I have never knew, the priority of them and I have live with them, and made certain decisions that have affected so much my life and the people near to me like my children and family. That exercise gave me the clear vision of why I have live and decide things for me. Now I know the VALUES that are driving my life and decisions.” Thank you .”

As Far As You Can See by: Pastor Chidi JC Akunma

I

n this edition, I will be looking into the scripture as recorded in Genesis 13.

14 The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” (Genesis 13:14-17. NIV) God said Abraham was to have as far as what he could see. That means that the extent of his vision was to be the extent of his possession. A limited vision or perception will give a limited possession. As was also in the case of Joshua, God instructed Abram to see and then He told him to move (verse 17). This is the power of vision. One of the problems we have today as Christians is the problem of “poor sight”. What do you see? How far can you see? Many of us have very little possibility because our poor visibility.

Lot Must Go

Earlier, God instructed Abram to leave his father’s house. God said to Abram that He was going to bless him if he separated himself from (1) his country (2) his kindred, and (3) his father’s house. Abram was able to separate himself from the first and second levels of attachment – his “country” and his “kindred”. But he took a bit of the third with him –Lot, the son of his late brother. God’s promise to him remained pending until “after Lot was separated from him.” It was only then that God could say to him “Lift up now your eyes and look….” In other words, it is now the time to enter into the possession of your long pending inheritance. You see, Lot had to leave so that Abram could be

blessed. God is concerned about our associates and associations. You cannot continue to hold onto the past associations or people whose life choices are contrary to your life’s purpose and expect to be productive or expect the manifestation of your blessing. You may be required to leave some of the things you have been holding onto before you will be able to receive what God has for you. You may be required to give up some habits or relationships you are in right now before you are able to move to your next level or promotion in life. These things may be hampering your ability to “see” clearly or “see” very far. There are some activities and habits you are practising that may have been blurring and dulling your vision. To put it bluntly, the LOTS in your life have to go for you to be able to possess your possession. It is important to note, that God wanted to give Abraham the land but firstly, Abraham has to see it and then he was to walk over it. When God brings specific things into your life, do you “see” them? Do you see the possibility of those things becoming a reality in your life? Then will you “walk” over and around it? Will you claim it? Are you able to live now as if you already have it? Will you thank God for it even before you see its manifestation in your life? That is called faith. Faith believes first before the result or manifestation happens in the physical.

God’s Blessing Is Always Geographical.

I am a firm believer that our blessings come to us when we are at the place where God wants us to be and doing what He said we should be doing. I believe there is a place called “there” for every one of us. It called the RIGHT PLACE.

Doing Something about Your Vision

Next, Abraham was to walk the length and breadth of the land. That also constitutes an area, for area =length X breadth. That is simple geometry. It becomes apparent then, that

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

Abraham’s several journeys and wanderings were each, prophetically significant, although their significance was not apparent to Abraham at that time. His sojourn from home to a ‘yetto be-disclosed’ destination, his journey for three days to sacrifice Isaac on the Mount Moriah (which turned out to be the same place as Calvary, outside Jerusalem, where Jesus was crucified about two thousand years later), were all part of the active process of the prophetic geometry for the possession of the land. Therefore, permit me to say that some of the things you are doing now or have been doing as a result of your obedience to God, (and sometimes some of them don’t make sense – but they make faith), could be that you have been walking around your land ready for possession. May be some of the things you have been going through are preparing you for possession of your land. Joshua’s march around Jericho may also be understood in the same light, as physical expression of the same spiritual principle. In Joshua’s case, however, instead of a length x breadth geometric activity, it was a circuit, a circumference around the city several times, and that was after having seen the city through the two spies who had been sent to scout the land (Joshua 2:6).

Some Visions Have Become Mere Dreams. God does not usually explain the significance of everything He asks us to do. God instructed Abram to see. Next, He was told him to move. God was implying, therefore, that visions should give birth to actions; and vision minus action equals zero (vision – action = 0). Many visions become mere dreams because they are not followed up with action. You have to give some legs (actions) to your vision in order for your vision to walk (become a reality). God told Abram – Arise. Most of us prefer to sit and just dream, gloating over the multitudes of revelations and promises from God that we have received, even if their fulfilment never comes to pass. God told Abram, “Arise,

walk through the land in the length of it and breadth of it”. Here, one can safely say that God was asking Abraham to also do with his feet what he asked him initially to do with his eyes. By vision, he covered the area; with his feet, through action, he established it. If you can perceive it, you can pursue it and if you can pursue it, you can possess it. As far as you are able to see you are able to possess. It is my prayer this year that you are able to perceive, pursue and possess your possession in Jesus Name.

Last Word

God is the giver of real dream and He is the best dream releaser. You need Him to help you to order your steps. Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that will stand (Proverbs 19:21). Therefore, if you have not made the decision to enter into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, I would like to invite you to do so now by praying this simple prayer.

“Lord Jesus, I need you. Please forgive me for all I have done wrong. Please come into my life and begin to lead me. I pray this as sincerely as I know how. Amen” If you have prayed this prayer, you are now born again. Congratulations! I will like to hear from you. Please contact me and let me know of your decision. The night of January 13th was a spectacular as it saw the eclipsing of two worlds. The air was filled with activity as there was a collision of great barbadian music and fashion. Attendees were treated to the best of both worlds as the 8th annual Barbados Music Awards came to a climax. All that were present, gathered to celebrate and pay dues to talented barbadian musicians, singers, songwriters and producers, who have either attained local stardom or achieved international recognition.

8th Annual HOUR” BARABADOS MUSIC AWARDS By Natalie Eastmond

T

he special occasion was also dedicated to the late legendary Whitney Houston and her mother Cissy Houston graced the attendees with not only her presence but also with here performances in song. Cissy later accepted the 2013 BMA International Icon Award in the memory of her daughter. It was surely a star filled occasion as there was an out pour of local and international artists that left the all spellbound. CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY WITH Paul ‘BARRY BOOM’ Robinson

B

arry Boom was born Paul Robinson in May 1964 in St Giles Hospital, Camberwell, south east London (UK); to Jamaican immigrants Ernest Robinson (a carpenter) and Sithel Robinson (a seamstress). He is the youngest of six boys. Boom first appeared on record aged 13, as a drummer/lead vocalist in the Simeons band. The Simeons recorded one album entitled “Dub Conference in London” (Freedom Sounds Records). In 1979 he formed part of “One Blood” alongside four of his older brothers. They cut two albums with Neville King Records, “In Love” (1980) and “Super Showcase” (1982). One Blood also released a series of successful singles throughout the period. In late ‘82 Boom was approached by Nick Bailey of the Nick Straker Band” and asked to perform as featured vocalist (as Paul Robinson) and co-write four tracks for their album ‘The Nick Straker Band’, which was released on Pinnacle Records in 1982. This was a pivotal point for Boom, as he learned a lot of production techniques and developed his production skills from this association with Nick Straker. In 1983 Boom moved into production for the first time scoring a certified reggae classic hit; with his production of Papa Levi on “Mi God Mi King”, staying at the number one spot in the UK reggae charts for 8 weeks. “Mi God Mi King” was picked up by Island Records and was released in Jamaica on the

Taxi Gang label. It sat atop the JA reggae charts for six weeks (the first British recording artist to hit the number one spot in JA) and Boom received his first recognition as a UK reggae producer. In 1984 Boom started his own record label ‘Level Vibes Records’ and went on to produce singles for Maxi Priest (‘Throw mi Corn’, ‘Should I’ et al), which all went to the number one spot on the UK reggae charts. Why Barry Boom? After recording numerous dub plates using many different pseudonyms for various sound systems around the UK and Europe; the name ‘Boom’ became Paul’s main nickname and for some unknown reason ‘Barry’ was put at the front - hence the name: Barry Boom. The notoriety of the dub plates created the demand for Barry Boom to become a recording artist. Barry Boom produced and released his first single “When You Smile” in 1984 on his own Level Vibes Label, which was his first solo number one in the UK reggae charts. That same year Boom produced and sang the ‘One Blood’ hits; “Get in Touch” (Ensign Records), “It’s A Romance” and “Changed Man” (Level Vibes Records) and all achieved the number one spot in the UK reggae charts. Also in 1984; Boom founded the Caution Band featuring Maxi Priest; where he performed as drummer/backing vocalist/ musical director.

Boom went on to produce and compose all the music and co-write lyrics for the Maxi Priest debut album “You’re Safe”. It was obvious that Boom’s musical style and record production produced a unique sound that was instantly recognisable and this caught the attention of Virgin 10 Records. Maxi was signed and the rest is history. Boom remained in the band One Blood with his brothers, but in 1987 tragedy struck when Boom’s elder brother and founder member of One Blood (Errol Robinson) died. The brothers disbanded, despite the best intentions of its members. With the success of the Caution band and Maxi Priest debut album; Boom was subsequently approached by Polydor Records and commissioned to produce and co-write the debut album by Smiley Culture “Tongue n Cheek”, which went on to become a major success in the UK. In 1988 Boom went on the Sly & Robbie/Taxi Gang world tour, with Freddie McGregor and Maxi Priest. This tour saw Boom shine in his capacity as a second tenor backing vocalist alongside Maxi (freeing him from his drum playing duties), which gave Boom the impetus to get back out front as a lead vocalist and do his thing. On his return to the UK in December 1989 he recorded his anthem, “Making Love” on Fashion Records. It remained on the reggae charts at number one for 7 weeks and entered the British national charts. In November 1990 Boom produced and cowrote Barry Boom’s debut album “The Living Boom”, which was released on Fashion Records. The album went to number one in the UK reggae charts and stayed for a further 6 weeks. This led in turn to Barry Boom

receiving the Radio One award for ‘Best Male Vocalist’ at the 1990 British Reggae Awards in London. VOX magazine described the album in its review as ‘Brilliant’. Barry Boom received the 1991 Best British Reggae Album award. He was also nominated in a further 4 categories: Best Songwriter, Best Single, Best Producer and Best Musician. Two other artists Boom had been producing at the time Janet LeeDavies and Mike Anthony received awards at the ceremony; Best Female Vocalist and Best Newcomer respectively. In 1992 Barry Boom went to JA to record his sophomore album “Trust Me” at Tuff Gong Recording studios in Kingston; he worked with reggae giants Sly & Robbie, Robbie Lyn, Danny Brownie and Handel Tucker. The first single “Dial My Number” went to number one in the UK reggae charts. The single “Kissing You” featuring Cutty Ranks received heavy rotation on Jamaican radio. In 1994 Barry Boom performed as tour support and worked as Musical Director for Chaka Demus and Pliers on the UB40 ‘Promises and Lies’ tour. The tour covered Japan, Australia, Europe and the Caribbean; playing to audiences between 5000 – 250,000 people. In 1996 Barry Boom was offered a production deal with Buzz Productions/MCA. The album was entitled “Taste of Things to Come”; it was produced by Livingstone Brown and Gary Benson, featuring the singles, “Stand and Deliver” and “Taste of Things to Come”. Boom spent his time between 1998 – 2001 touring on and off, writing songs and collaborating with acclaimed writers, such as Rick Knowles, Billy Steinburg and Troy Taylor, to name a few.

In 2001 Boom was working in a recording studio in NYC and touring, but took a break to return home for his wife’s graduation ceremony. A week later whilst home in the UK, 9/11 occurred and Boom made the decision to stop touring and take a hiatus from the music business to spend some quality time with his family. Boom has been happily married to his writing partner and wife Valerie for nearly 30 years and they have four children; 2 boys and 2 girls: - André, Renée-Louise, Ashley-Paul and Layla. Boom has continued to write songs and perform live throughout the UK. Revived, Refreshed and Renewed; Boom has emerged with an original musical bag of songs; giving birth to his new album “Everyday Life”. Everyday Life speaks to the masses, as Boom delves into cultural matters, whilst remaining true to his fans by singing songs that deal with relationships and matters of the heart. Produced and co-written by Boom; the album captures the ‘old school’ vibe with a new flavour. Boom has emerged as one of the cornerstones of British reggae music. As a singer, producer, songwriter and musician he is a ‘quadruple’ threat with a musical pedigree that few in any musical genre can match.

HAPPY VAL

My One And Only Roger, who was 19 years old, was buying an expensive bracelet, to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, at a very smart jeweller’s shop in Hatton Garden, London. The jeweller inquired, ‘Would you like your girlfriend’s name engraved on it?’ Roger thought for a moment, grinned, then answered, ‘No, instead engrave “To my one and only love”.’ The jeweller smiled and said, ‘Yes, sir; how very romantic of you.’ Roger retorted with a glint in his eye, ‘Not exactly romantic, but very practical. FICTION A Jamaican Story Chapter 10 by Clayton Brown

A serialised story of a Jamaican boys journey from the hills of Trelawney to the golden streets of Brixton.

I

was in Jamaica again after 10 years away! When I awoke everyone else was up and about, carrying out their various tasks. I got up quickly, put some clothes on, got my tooth brush, tooth paste and flannel and went outside to be greeted by beautiful sunshine and a blue cloudless sky. Aunt Naomi called to me from the dining room. When I opened the door, she had an enamel basin and a jug of water which she gave me to wash my face and brush my teeth. I said good morning and thanked her for the basin and water. After I had finished my ablutions I went straight to my Granma’s room and knocked on her door. “Come in, come in!” the dulcet tones of my Gran beckoned me. When I entered my sister was dressed and sitting on the side of the bed, I said good morning to her, then went up to the bed and kissed my Gran and asked if she had had a pleasant night. She said she had slept well and that it had been a long time since anyone had slept with her but that my sister had been a good sleeper and had not disturbed her during the night. Aunt Naomi called us for breakfast and we hurried through to the dining room. On the table I saw; Ackee and saltfish, fried dumplings, hard dough bread and avocado pear. All of a sudden I was very hungry! Everyone was summoned from whatever they were doing and we all sat down to a fabulous breakfast. After breakfast my brother and Wessel went to work their land and my thoughts returned to my catapult and the birds. I got my catapult and told my sister that I was going to have a little walk around the back of the house. Ten feet beyond the cleared area at the back of the house was like a forest. Once you ventured in it was difficult to see anything behind you but trees. The trees were populated by all manner of birds.

Send us your comment

I aimed at a small colourful bird not ten feet away, sitting on an avocado pear tree limb. I fired and missed! After half an hour of fruitless endeavour I decided that I would change my target. I had been trying to shoot very small birds, because from what I could remember they were the sweetest. However, it was now no longer a matter of reliving a memory of long ago, now I had to shoot a bird, any bird! Amongst all the little birds there was a profusion of black birds the size of sea gulls. I must be able to hit one of those you would think. Unfortunately not! I created a lot of noise and consternation, but nothing fell to ground. I gave up after I had shot all my pellets and used up a goodly amount of the small stones I had gathered. I decided not to speak of this particular adventure.

We decided to go to the main bar in town because it had lots of room and the music was always up to date. There were quite a few people in the bar and it seemed lively but cool. I went to the bar and ordered two white rums and looked for a stool of which there were none available. We chatted for awhile, then a little drunk man sitting on a stool next to me decided that he wanted to stand up for awhile, which he did, pushing the stool away as he stood. My brother, looking out for my comfort, decided to retrieve the stool for me to sit. I sat down and ordered another drink. As I turned to Roy to offer him a cigarette the drunken fellow decided that he now wanted to sit and did so. Unfortunately I was now sitting on the stool he had “placed “behind him recently.

Our days in the first week or two were taken up with visiting family, of which there were many. My father’s family and my mother’ family basically made up the majority of the population in our vicinity. In fact, later on, the area actually, informally, became known as “Bailey Town”. In the evenings, however, my brother and I would go down a “city”. City, was just a line of shops on each side of the one road that led in and out of “town”. But when you’re sixteen years old and it gets dark at 6 O’clock and you have no television, a “one horse town” is like Las Vegas.

Most people who had seen the episode were laughing or smiling. One strapping young fellow, however, was not. “It should be my father an we would a see something”, he said. Then I heard my brother say loud and with authority, “Say a yu Fada!” I thought, shit, thems’ fightin words! And I had been in such a good mood. The guy muttered under his breath and went back to whatever he had been doing.

It was on one of those sojourns into town that I finally got to realize what it was like to have a big brother to watch out for you. I had received a letter that morning from my best friend in England, telling me that I had now passed all my exams! I was deliriously happy and after telling my aunty and grandma, I told Roy to get ready as we would be going “out a road” to celebrate.

ts to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

My proudness knew no bounds. I had a big brother. I love you Roy R.I.P

n April of this year, the very best reggae Artistes at home and overseas will be brought together on stage for the exciting annual “Digicel Barbados Reggae Festival”. The event will be held on April 21 to April 28, 2012. This production will bring together a star-studded line-up of local and international recording artistes and the audience who are lovers of vintage reggae will be treated with a show of the highest calibre. A mixture of the rhythmic reggae beats complimented by the Caribbean Sea breeze and traditional atmosphere, this festival has been one of the most prevalent attractions on the reggae scene around the Caribbean for 8 Years. Three independent promoters – “AG Productions”, “Premier Promotions” and “Hardcore Promotions”, formed together in 2004 to create a superlative force behind this festival. “FAS Entertainment Services (FAS)”. By pooling their resources they were able to undertake entertainment projects on a scale that was not previously possible as individual operators. The first such project was the inaugural Reggae on the Hill production at the Farley Hill National Park in 2004, which featured the largest cast of

local, regional and international reggae stars ever assembled on one stage in Barbados. The result was success beyond the directors of FAS’ wildest dreams. It attracted a crowd of over 12,000 of totally satisfied reggae lovers of all ages and from every social level in attendance. The following year, 2005, FAS expanded the reggae venture by adding a second event, the Vintage Reggae Show and Dance and officially launched the Barbados Reggae Festival. In keeping with the standard set the previous year, both productions were equally as successful. The rest is now history with Digicel coming on board in 2006 as title sponsors and the expansion of the Festival to three events with the introduction of the also very popular Reggae Beach Party, which caters to the younger generation of fans. This year FAS has added a fourth attraction to the Festival in the form of an MV Harbour Master Reggae Cruise designed to give fans the opportunity to meet, mingle and party with both the visiting

and local Reggae on the Hill performers. In addition to the Digicel Reggae Festival, FAS Entertainment Services coproduces one of the most popular Crop Over events, Ten-to-Ten, and an early December event which last year was titled Hennessy Artistry and featured Jah Cure, Duane Stephenson and Tarrus Riley at the National Stadium. Our resident photographer, Peter Branch, attended and took photographs of last year’s festival which included performances by: - Jah Cure, Capelton, Freddie McGregor, Glen Washington, Admiral Tibet, Ernie Smit, Wendy Alleyne, Chris Martin, Konshens, Tanya Stephens and Everton Blender also local act Buggy Nhakente and Mike Grosvenor. sports by Kieran Etoria-King According to the Yanks, it’s the greatest show on Earth. What we do know is it is the most watched sporting event on Earth – higher than the FIFA World Cup Final, higher than the Premier League of FA Cup Final, the Olympics, anything. Kieran Etoria-King

The Superbowl

A baffling exercise in Americanness

y first thought as soon as the BBC’s presenters hand over to the CBS coverage they have been given is just how American everything is. The stars and stripes are on everything, and it’s all so glitzy. Everything seems polished and perfected, from the on screen display right to the pitch. As a fan of proper football, I find the sheer perfectness of the pitch disconcerting. My second thought is that I have never seen so many dreadlocks in one place, and I have been to Jamaica. As the teams walk out, half of the defensive players look like they were rounded up at a Damian Marley concert. The two teams contesting the final game of the NFL season are the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49’ers. Surprisingly, I have heard of both of them. My flatmate points the Ravens’ linebacker Ray Lewis out to me, because of his awesome ‘denchness’. This means he is large, muscular and scary. CBS promptly shows a montage of Lewis leaping ridiculous heights to intercept passes. NFL players are incredible athletes. The stadium announcer - who sounds like the voiceover guy on every film trailer introduces every single one of the opening performers with “HERE, TO HONOUR AMERICA…” starting with the Sandy Hook Elementary School choir. Yes, that is the same school where 20 children were murdered by a gun-wielding maniac not two months ago.

However, their moving, poignant rendition of the pseudo-anthem ‘Sea to Shining Sea’, featuring Jennifer Hudson, is overshadowed as the camera cuts to the shiniest, most orange, whitest-toothed man I have ever seen, who for some reason seems to be miming the song in sign language. And God DAMN his smile is creepy - no one needs to smile that much ever, let alone while leading a group of post-traumatic elementary school children.

Next to honour America is Alicia Keys, who sings the national anthem from a piano in the centre of the pitch. It’s all very patriotic, everyone is on their fists, with their hands on their heart, looking teary-eyed at the sky. Except for Shiny McCreepysmile, who now seems to be miming holding something in the air and admiring it. An imaginary flag, maybe? I don’t know, right now I just hope he isn’t going to keep appearing throughout the game.

Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick throw immediate, inch perfect passes is beyond impressive. Between the constant breaks that is. ‘Footbawl’ is a very stop-start game, and while the Americans usually fill this time with endless sponsor messages and ads, the ad-free BBC uses them to have inane chats with people like former England Rugby captain Martin Johnson. After several shots of more teary-eyed patriotism around the New Orleans Superdome, the camera cuts to a group of uniformed American soldiers watching the anthem in a tent at ‘Camp Courage’, Afghanistan, and it become clear that this whole Superbowl thing is less a sporting event and more a huge, 4 hour long advert for the great nation of America. The children, the popstars, the happy shiny fool, the athleticism…yawn get on with the game. I have watched American Football before, so I understand the basic objective of the game, but not enough to fully understand what is going. My screen has been taken over by number and letters, the pitch has more lines drawn across it than a map of London…it’s a confusing old game, so I turn to Twitter for some standard of the absent scrolling that defines my generation. My friends are posting ironic messages like ‘Go Arsenal! #Superbowl’ and ‘Im just waiting for Bane #Superbowl #DarkKnightRises’. It’s reassuring to see a reciprocation of my ignorance, but it doesn’t help me understand the game. But as a neutral, I’m not here for the game, I’m here for the spectacle, and there is plenty of that. The sheer skill on show is astounding; it’s incredible to watch the quarterbacks

The tackles are flying and the hits are hard. But something is missing, and I work it out when one player takes a dramatic sliding fall, and nothing but small rubber pellets shoot into the air – they are playing on astro turf, artificial grass. I find this deeply offensive. It’s already basically a bastardised version of rugby, sanitised with helmets, pads and a host of unnecessary rules. Can’t they even handle a bit of mud in the name of a proper sporting spectacle? Even the oft-maligned European footballers get down in the dirt. The first moment of the game that I truly understand comes with the Ravens’ Jacoby Jones touchdown shortly before half time. Seconds before I had remarked to my friend, who had asked if the game was any good, that I didn’t know enough to pass judgement. But I knew this was good, as he

dived to catch a 56-yard pass, stood up, and then breezed right around 2 defenders into the end zone. Half time in the Superbowl lasts over half an hour, so that they can sell some prime ad space for up to $150,000 per second and throw in a mini concert. This year it’s Beyonce. Everyone was very excited by this, but I just didn’t get it. Don’t get me wrong, I like Beyonce, but I didn’t see or hear anything that I couldn’t at literally any other time. So then the second half kicked off, and immediately Jones catches the kickoff at his own end and runs the entire length of the pitch to score another stunning touchdown. “Dis gon’ be gurd!” I think. But then immediately afterwards, thanks to Beyonce’s half time show, a power surge causes the lights to cut out in the stadium. The game was suspended for a further half an hour. By this time, it’s about 3am UK time, and I’m not sure how much more I can take. I bravely take the executive decision to leave the living room and go to bed. New experiences are all about learning. So what did I learn from my first Superbowl? Well, I learned that America is just as baffling and bizarre a place as it apparently always has been, but shinier now. I learned that American Rugby (as it should really be called; show me one similarity to football!) is a fascinating, technical, but infuriatingly and unnecessarily complicated game that goes on for too long and uses too much electricity to be good for the world in any way. As I said before, they sell it as the greatest show on Earth. As a spectacle, it certainly was impressive, even if it was just gung ho promotion of ‘’Murica’. But as an actual

sport fixture? Well I’m obviously biased, but give me the FA Cup Final any day. Oh, in case you were interested in the score, the Ravens won a tight victory 34-31. But I suspect you were not. SPORTS CALENDAR FEBRUARY 2013
