nother step was taken towards making Barbados a major fashion mecca recently with an appearance in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Even though this wasn’t the first time that a barbadian has made a big impact in Hollywood with the likes of home girl superstar Rhianna being crowned the Queen of West Hollywood it however it’s a first for Barbadians designers. This appearance was on March 9th during the bi-annual Concept LA Fashion Week at Siren Studios in Hollywood for Fall/Winter 2013. Two of Barbados top designers, the talented Kesia Estwick and Brandi Estwick took the runway by storm during the Caribbean Showcase leaving a very good impression with the large crowd of fashion lovers present with their collections Lilith and Iman Estie, respectively. The Lilith collection had structured tailoring, geometric cutouts and appliquéd details producing breath taking designs that were bold and daring suitable for the woman who has plenty of attitude and dare devil personality. The Iman Estie collection was the monochrome trend at its best as it featured cohesive black and white motifs. Her designs had a classic touch but were but were still very edgy and chic doaning architectural inspired details and cutouts. These ladies did themselves and country proud as they produced eye catching collections that got their work some well-desrved international exposure. On the runway having their moment in time were barbadian models Sedia Jackman, Danielle Dottin, Charlene King and Danielle Bishop who accompanied the designers. Here's a look at some of the designs from the collection.....

Paula Souza.

By: Jacqui Brown Model Paula Souza, born in a little town called Nanuque- Minas Gerais in Brazil, is now an aspiring fashion model and is ready to take the fashion world by storm. At 5.8”, she has a look that fashion houses, photographers, designers and make-up artists gravitate to. An energetic persona with a good sense of humour, Paula knew at a very early age that she wanted to be a model as she always enjoyed posing and being photographed. She thinks that her inspiration came from watching the models on fashion TV shows. However, it was only after taking modelling classes that she discovered how passionate she was about her craft. At the moment, Paula’s dreams of becoming a fashion stylist are being kept alive as she currently studies “Fashion Retail” full time at Bridgwater College. She also works part time at Morrisons for DHL as a stock controller. Paula loves the catwalk and is amazed that she has been modelling for 5 years and for almost 2 years in the UK. She was recently selected to be the Shugakane ambassador of 2013. Shagakane are designers renowned for the very latest in contemporary fashion and Ethnouveau apparel and attended the Top Model of Colour show to handpick their candidate for 2013. She also thinks that her style is suited to commercial campaigns.

Paula thrives on working in different, exciting and challenging projects and loves to go that extra mile to create a diverse range of images. A photographic shoot in the winter snow dressed only in lingerie or on the UK’s freezing river bank dressed in a bikini in the middle of winter does not phase her and only convinces her that the little suffering she encounters are worth it allowing her to achieve her goal in becoming an accomplished fashion model Paula’s favourite part of her body is her flat belly. She avidly campaigns for curvy models and is against anorexic models. She would love to see more curvy models in the industry and although things have changed a bit both on the catwalk and in magazines there are unfortunately still a majority of size 1 models but Paula would like to see more natural women in the fashion industry. Her advice to aspiring models is to be confident and to remember, that you are a “trademark”, so take care of it! An April Fool’s Prank That Went All The Way.

L

eading up to the 1st of April we all try to stay on guard to avoid falling victim to an April fool’s prank. That particular day seems to bring out the inner prankster in most people as they plot in great detail, a way to outwit friends and family. I must admit the feeling that comes when a prank goes according to plan is one of satisfaction and pleasure but to fall victim to one of these pranks however, is not so great. I was once a victim to a cunning and elaborate April fool’s day prank (sigh!) of which I will be sharing below. This April fool trick took place during my time at secondary school. We all had tutor groups and had to assemble in our allocated rooms every morning. We usually had PSHE in the morning where we discussed views on society and other relevant issues. During that month my tutor group had received a lot of complaints in regards to our conduct in various lessons. My school’s usual policy for continued disruptions during lessons was an hour long detention for the whole tutor group, which usually took place at the end of the school day. This exact morning was very different, we

Claudia Andrews is a young lady with a keen interest in writing and equality. Usually viewing the world from a different angle; she prides herself on being able to communicate to the world through writing. were handed detention letters by our tutor informing us about the time and date for us to be present to serve our time in detention. As we read the letter further, we realised that the detention was to be held on Saturday the 1st of April. Clueless, we all just moaned and despaired about the Saturday lie in we were going to miss that week and carried on with our daily routine without questioning the letter.

or upset. Dangerous pranks might lead to problems so it is needless to say that caution must be taken on this day of fun. I am sure the jokes are on the way by now so I will be careful that I don’t fall victim to it again. For those that got served a nice hearty prank I say April Fools!!!

I was awakened by my alarm on Saturday the 1st of April and got dressed in a full school uniform. On my journey there, I could see stares from by passers who were probably thinking that I got the day of the week wrong. I approached the school gate to find the rest of the tutor group waiting restlessly by the gate for our tutor to let us in so that we can get it over with. The tutor finally arrives some minutes later with a smug look on her face and shouted a hearty ‘April fools!!! The look on our faces was priceless! It was an epic moment of embarrassment and shock, followed by a laugh for good measure. That was an elaborate and well-constructed April fools that I am sure my tutor group still remember till this day. When done properly April fools pranks can be a funny time that leaves a lasting memory. We must however, consider the types of prank and the victims we choose in order to avoid any casualties Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

Nineties crooners bring great Wembley Arena show to a heartbreaking end

T PROMISED to be ‘the biggest R&B spectacular of 2013’ and, for the most part, it was.

for the 11,000 people who had packed into the sell-out event, the night was brought to a sobering end.

R&B superstars Jodeci, Blackstreet, SWV and Dru Hill were among the names that made the winning line-up for The Show Tour at Wembley Arena last night (March 23), but

Jodeci, who many had billed as the headline act, were the last act to grace the stage and first to get booed.

e MC for those who like abbreviating) an entertainment, d to celebrating British talent, both home and abroad, on top stories from around the world ://themastercopy.com/ Nineties favourites Changing Faces, SWV, Dru Hill and Blackstreet had many prematurely branding the night as “the best concert” they’d been to in a long while. And they weren’t wrong, it was amazing.

And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, it didn’t. Jodeci turned up seemingly intoxicated, a view that was only strengthened when group member Mr Dalvin fell off the stage before singing a note.

Déjà Vu’s DJ Frisky’s carefully selected playlist, a homage to hits from the famous musical era, went down a treat with fans and acted as the perfect antidote to bridge the gap between sets. The night’s hosts, comedian Eddie Kadi and Choice FM’s Jigs, also reaped praise from the crowd for their winning blend of comedy, dance and their natural flair to sustain a seamless order of events. Even the UK’s very own boy band Damage, the show’s supporting act, did a great job as the crowd filed into the arena singing hits Ghetto Romance and Rumours.

Mr Dalvin.

Their once silky and harmonic vocals were nothing but a distant memory as the group, which was noticably missing member Devante, struggled to perform hits from their fruitful career and reach the notes and melodies that had made them stars. The live band, who had taken 30 minutes to set up, didn’t know what the R&B group were doing most of the time and it showed. K-Ci, JoJo and Mr Dalvin’s attempt to draw audience participation failed miserably and instead sparked the onslaught of crowd members gathering their belongings and leaving. In a last ditch attempt to claw back some glory, the threesome invited the fellow groups back on stage for the performance of

Get On Up. Blackstreet reportedly declined the offer, while others, despite the hostility of the skeletal crowd, joined them on stage. The song would have been a complete disaster if Sisqo and Jazz of Dru Hill fame hadn’t picked up the microphone and taken on the lead vocals. Quite ironic that K-Ci had once allegedly accused Sisqo of stealing his sound - and he was the very man to save it. It’s unfortunate that the stage antics of Jodeci overshadowed what was otherwise a great night. SWV’s vocals were amazing on the cover of Patti Labelle’s If Only You Knew and hits including You’re The One and Weak sparked jubilation from the crowd.

Dru Hill’s set was just as solid. The infamous dance routine to Tell Me was replicated around the arena and the gorgeous simplicity of Beauty went down a treat as fans twostepped to the stand out track on 1998’s Enter The Dru album. And they couldn’t leave the stage without singing their first No.1 single, In My Bed and second charttopper, Never Make a Promise. The quartet’s set was followed by Blackstreet, whose time on stage read like a mini concert

of their own. Dressed in matching white outfits, the foursome, led by Teddy Riley, performed hits including Before I Let You Go and U Blow My Mind. Riley, often credited with the creation of the New Jack Swing era, performed a short solo stint on his famed keyboard and led the group in a professional and well-produced set.

Overall, a great beginning and middle was let down by a tragic end. Promoters may need to think twice about booking Jodeci until they clean up their act, both personally and professionally. What was witnessed yesterday was truly heartbreaking for fans.

Lorna manages to excel in many of her ventures including her work with the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards. In this interview, she talks us through the recognition by the GUBA team, the inspiration behind her designs and her expectations for African fashion. As a team member for GUBA, talk us through your work with the team and the inspiration behind Boutique de L’Afrique The Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards, gave me the inspiration I needed to pursue this passion. I watched her design and make her own clothes and her love for designing and how effortlessly she went about it, inspired me greatly. The constant motivation, along with my love for design and fashion, led me to start up Boutique de L’Afrique. What message do you try to send with your collection? I try to reflect my cultural influences and creative background in the production and delivery processes at Boutique De L’Afrique. I therefore try to make sure that my collection ‘screams’ out cross-culture, unique, adaptive, Africa, quirky, fair trade, elegance, sophistication with class, affordable and quality. What achievements to date have you had with your collection? The fashion industry is extremely competitive so to be able to survive and still exist is an achievement in itself and I am grateful to God for that. The support I get from the GUBA team is also an acknowledgement that I am on the right path. We have also been featured at Soho Arts Fair through which we received recommendations to be the main designer brand at Self Help Africa; a charity organisation which supports farmers in Africa to build towards success. was a fantastic opportunity and we worked in collaboration with the MTN Kampala marathon. We currently have a shop on ASOS marketplace where we feature and sell some of our products. Boutique De l’Afrique collections have appeared on catwalks such as Fashion Finest last year, Ghana Fashion UK Show and FashionMist. The likes of Miss Congo (2010) and Top Model of Colour (2013) have modelled for our label. This year, we hope to participate in many other shows and to be one of the forces striving to improve the quality and creativity of the African print. Where will you like to see Boutique de L’Afrique in a few years? In the next few years my aim for Boutique de L’Afrique is for us to be successful and to have a firmer brand presence in the market. We are working to develop and diversify our brand by creating unique products with an African edge to it. I hope to participate in world class Afro centric shows such as: Ghana Fashion and Design Week, London Fashion Week, Arise Fashion Week and many other opportunities and of course, to win an award at GUBA 2013. I enjoy working with hard working professionals.

“The Diary of Black Men”

will be on tour in August 2013 at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon.

IVE information on the cast and the director; Russell Andrews of The Stagewalker Group via Panache E-Magazine.

Management Company has been working with this production since 1989 and acted tive producers when the play previously toured England in 1994 and 2000. For all sponsorship options for this international production contact: -theklub@hotmail.co.uk +44 (0) 7831 128 707 www.diaryofblackmen.com

Why did you want to become a Film Star/ Actor? Initially to make a lot of money and meet beautiful women. Now that I’ve been around for a minute, I simply enjoy telling stories through the medium of moving pictures.

If you could make a Film or a Theatre Production with anyone dead or alive, who would you choose and why? Too many to name just one. If my arm was twisted, I’d say Meryl Streep. Because...well... it’s Meryl Streep!

Lawrence, what advice would you give to young budding actor trying to get into the Film/Entertainment Industry? If you’re trying to break into the film business, my advice is to go to school and learn your craft, then hangout with other people trying to break into the business. Eventually somebody will. Maybe with a short film, or student film, or independent feature. They will call all of their friends to work for free. If you are one of those friends and that film hits, then you’re in.

What would you like to teach the young & others from what you have learned over the years as a Star Actor? I’d say this; “The Business” is a “Business”. Businesses are about making money, not art. Learn as much about “The Business” as you can. Also, try your best to save more money, or at least as much money, as you spend. Even if your career lasts forever...Oh, right...nothing lasts forever. Lastly, have fun. If you stop having fun, stop doing it, or figure out a way to make it fun again.

Who is your favourite Actor, Actress or Icon tell us why? There is no one actor that I can point to. I like many actors for different reasons. I love some actors for their ability to transform to the point of almost un-recognition. I love other actors for their ability to make you believe what they’re going through on screen even though they look exactly the same in every film that they do. What are your plans for 2013 & Beyond within the arts? My plans are to work, work, work. Sam Jackson once said to me, “Work begets work.” So that’s what I plan to do.

What did you love most about the Arts Films, Drama etc. when you were a young man/ child? The arts have always affected me emotionally, even as a youngster. Whether it was music, movies, dance, or visual art, they all caused me to feel. They still do. I guess that’s what I loved and still love. Someone once told me, “Once the arts have you, it never lets you go.” And that has been the truth. h t t p : / / w w w. d i a r y o f b l a c k m e n . c o m / TheDiary-Cast.htm

he 2Inspire Ladies Day event took place on 9th March 2013 at the Crowne Plaza, Docklands. Coinciding with International Women’s Day, “Celebrating the Creativity of Women” it was a free event that showcased budding and established female entrepreneurs; particularly those in the creative sector.

topics included health, education, personal development, business start-up, media and styling. Feedback of the event has been empowering and inspirational; many delegates staying for the entire programme and stall holders keen for the next event which will hopefully take place in September 2013.

The 2Inspire Ladies Day offered a platform that promoted and celebrated the creative talent of women. Some businesses owners had only just launched their products and services and felt that The Ladies Day was a superb entry to market. With poetry readings from Joanne Mills, LD Henriquez and Cezanne Poetess delegates were treated to some superb entertainment topped off with exclusive singing performances from Linda E and Nyarai.

The 2inspire network was launched in May of 2012, “Empowering individuals and helping them to realise their potential is something that I am passionate about. I believe that women should work together and support each other on their journeys, this belief is the foundation of the network, an organisation that provides forums and platforms that help to empower, promote and inspire women” says Founder Hazel Chawapiwa.

The 2Inspire Ladies Day was honoured to have Councillor Joy Laguda MBE as one of our guest speakers; encouraging women to take ownership of their goals and strive for the best in life. The event included stands from organisations and education as well as a wide range of creative businesses and services selling everything from natural beauty products to cupcakes and fashion. There was also entertainment and workshops to meet the lifestyle, personal and business development needs of attendees. Workshop

Hazel has been nominated as “Role Model of The Year” at this year’s Women4Africa Awards. The event also marked the official launch of the 2Inspire Network’s Academy; a personal development and life-skills programme for young people aged between 16-21. enture FM has been around for just over two years now. An online internet radio station also with an FM dial 99.5 continues to go from strength to strength. The ethos of the station is to empower and inspire the global community through the delivery of conscious programmes and as true to its word as ever, this is what Venture FM have achieved todate. One might ask why are they so committed to serving and reaching out to the global community in this way. Well, from what I have seen and experienced it is because they know the power of radio, they know the power of good radio content, they have seen and know the need in people’s hearts for good quality radio but more so, they have a passion to reach out and touch lives whether that be through the talk shows or music shows because they realise people are searching for that eclectic mix of music and conscious talk.

So it seems the word on the street at the moment is VENTURE – well let’s find out more about the station. The station is run by Musical and Queen Genius a husband and wife team along with

What is the ethos of Venture FM? Venture FM’s mission and ethos is to empower and inspire the global community through delivering conscious programs. We aim to deliver programs which empower our audience to think, to reflect, to understand self and to embrace life. Whether that be through our talk shows which cover empowerment, spirituality, astrology, personal transformation and other conscious shows or from the variety and diversity of music delivered, at Venture FM we keep the listener in mind and aim to deliver the best at all times.

Musical and Queen Genius with guest Felicity Ethnic

What inspired you to set up Venture FM? Venture FM was set up after we experienced a situation on another station which meant we had to make a decision to go our own way. We therefore decided after discussions with Chris Jammy that we were going to form “Venture FM” which was the name given by Chris Jammy.

We are passionate and dedicated to our audience and about our station and what we stand for. Our presenters are committed and dedicated to their shows and are carefully selected to represent the ethos of the station. Venture FM broadcasts 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

What is your background in the industry and what is it that you enjoy so much about what you do? Queen Genius: My inspiration came from my late father who was a sound man. I’ve been involved in radio since 1988 and been doing it ever since and this is something that I always enjoy.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

I’ve been on crystal FM, Rasta House radio and managed Crystal FM and I was also on Invincible Radio. Musical Genius: I’ve been involved in the music industry since the young tender age of 9 years and have been involved in radio since 1987/1988 on a yearly legal station where I used to share a radio show with a friend of my school teacher. This clashed initially and after that I was involved on various radio stations which included Charity radio, Genesis radio, Crystal FM, Invincible radio and then I formed my own internet radio, One Harmony Radio which now streams international shows also via Venture FM. You both have your own shows can you briefly tell me a little more about them? Queen Genius: My show is a Lover’s Rock show and it’s on Sundays between 12pm to 3pm. This is a sub-genre of reggae that I love from I was young and this love for Lovers Rock came from my late father. I also interview Lovers Rock artists on my show from time to time. I’ve interviewed artists like Barry Boom, Barry Biggs, Susan Cadogan,

Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, Winston Reedy, Fredrica Tibbs, D Sharp and many more. I have also interviewed Intuitive Healer and Author Esther Austin. I have done two previous shows with Esther which has now lead to a twice monthly show to talk about healing, offering live readings and talking about other intuitive issues. Musical Genius: My show is The International Reggae Show and it’s on Mondays: Midday to 3pm, Wednesdays 3pm to 5pm and Saturdays 4pm to 7pm. This show contains interviews from recording artists worldwide and I also have international link-ups with hosts from Bermuda, Canada, Jamaica, South Florida, Atlanta, and Gambia. I have interviewed artists over the years such as Romain Virgo, Fiona, Brigadier Jerry, The Mighty Diamonds, Freddie Mcgregor, Tony Anthony, Prince Jazzbo the list is endless. This is also streamed on One Harmony Radio, Rock Da Box in South Florida, and Da Flava Radio in Atlanta. Who are some of your heroes or who have inspired you?

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

Queen Genius: My late father was my inspiration and heroes for radio. Musical Genius: My inspiration for radio came from Jamaican radio announcer Barry Gordon known as Barry G who I heard as a youngster on David Rodigan show in the early 80s I used to copy his radio style to perfection till I developed my own style which paid off. If I was to say who was my radio hero it would be him he is a legend. It must be quite challenging running your own station what are some of those challenges and how do you keep things in the balance? It is challenging because you have to stay calm, positive and be understanding. You have to remain focussed in order to keep things in the balance and you have to learn to communicate with everyone. The station has a variety and types of shows how do you select your presenters and how do you typecast the content of your shows? We decided that we have to have a mixed bag of shows to include not just music shows

but information shows which include health issues, astrology and intuitive readings etc. We also host international shows where listeners can hear what is going on in other parts of the globe. For example some of our shows are broadcasted from the USA, Canada, Bermuda and Jamaica. What is the best thing about running your own station and where to next for Venture? The best thing about running your own station is to keep control of the content that is aired. Also you can select the type of presenters that you want. Venture aims to move from strength to strength and to wherever the Universe takes us. What other services do you offer on the station?

We offer advice, Intuitive Readings, information on health issues and guidance. www.venturefmradio.com 99.5FM

9 Quick Fun Easy Ways To Get More Exercise (Excerpt from Budget Behaviour Belief) By Leah Salmon

Taken from “Budget, Behaviour & Belief - Boost these B’s to beat disease” at www.budgetbehaviourbelief.com

I

f our ancestor from 200 – 300yrs ago could see some of us now, they’d be disgusted at how lazy and out of shape many of us are due to our poor food choices and lack of exercise.

or a student wailing for help with their sums. So I can confidently say that as a busy homeschooling mother of 5, I have an active lifestyle, but even I need some structured exercise.

When I start working with clients and take a brief history from them, it’s amazing how many of them have no structured exercise and don’t even have a lifestyle that includes any amount of strenuous physical activity on a regular basis.

I’d say about 50% of clients I work with have lives that involve driving or being driven to work, sitting down at work, driving or being driven home, then sitting at the computer or TV before sitting in a bath before bed.

You see there are weeks when I don’t put on a DVD and get jiggy with Gillian Micheals, but every day involves some levels of heavy lifting from lifting and carry 1 (or 2) babies and children, laundry, mopping and sweeping, hovering, making beds, carrying and packing groceries etc and in my house, you have to move quickly before when it comes to housework, take too long with it and you’re sure to be interrupted by an argument that needs quelling, a spillage or breakage, a ripped off nappy causing havoc

I appreciate that our society is made in a way that promotes and encourages this pattern, but unless you use step one from this book and find the time exercise, we will end up like the people in Wall.E minus the cute rusty robot. The main benefits of regular physical exercise (to name just a few) are: 1. Along with a good diet, it helps maintain your weight 2. Helps control blood sugar levels which can in turn reduces cravings and

comfort eating (especially if as soon as a craving or desire to comfort eat hits, you get up, do some exercise then have a long drink of water) Strengthens your heart and stops you getting out of breath doing simple things Relieves constipation and improves your digestive systems Improves your circulations, so the toxins get more easily removed from your body and the nutrients from your diet are more easily absorbed. Improves your mood and helps relieve stress

A few fun, quick or easy ways you can easily get regular exercise into your life 1. If you have a bike, do a search for a local bicycle riding club, many areas have them, where locals get together and all go for a ride in the evenings or for long faster rides on the weekends 2. Find a local martial arts or dance class to join 3. If you have young children, challenge them to a race, a game of hide and seek, give them a piggy back ride or a game of tag. 4. Do the housework (sweeping, mopping and hovering particularly) while dancing to really fast soca, dancehall, afrobeats, samba, calypso, house and garage, hip hop, disco or another favourite upbeat music.

5. If you or your children have a trampoline, jump on and do 10 big star jumps. 6. Make a promise to yourself that you›ll always run up stairs, never walk again (unless you have some really cute heels on, in which case, whip them off!!! Woooo Whooo!!!) 7. Never sit down when you›re on the phone if you don›t really have to. When I›m on a business or coaching call, I much prefer to walk up and down the room or garden, whilst occasionally stretching, bending or getting into horse stance. 8. Do a YouTube search for ‹Office Worker Exercises» for really simple exercise you can do while sitting down at your desk or around your desk. 9. Wash the windows on your house or wash and wax your car as quickly as you can (make sure you do it properly though). Think of Karate Kid «Wax on, wax off» Make sure to do a good warm up or at least a few stretches before you start anything to strenuous and if you›ve been told that you have a medical condition that prevents you from exercising, find a professional exercise coach (I’d recommend a certified CHEK Practitioner) to show you what you can do.

DIABETES THE EPIDEMIC. by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

HEALTH:

listen to your body, develop healthy lifestyle habits, and do regular medical check ups.

Diabetes affects more than 3.7 million people in the UK and a further 7 million people are at high risk of developing it. Along with diet, lifestyle factors such as physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight can help to both manage and prevent the disease. The symptoms of diabetes can be very subtle, and seemingly harmless. It is possible to have diabetes for months, even years, Before the first symptoms occur, it is not possible to know whether a person is going to get diabetes, but there are some risk factors, that if present in our life, can lead to the manifestation of this aliment. In the pre-diabetes phase there are no symptoms of diabetes. This is the phase in which you have to recognise that you have one of the risk factors, like obesity, poor physical activity, cigarette smoking, and high blood pressure. These are loud warning signs that you should rethink your habits. One out of three people who are in the pre-diabetes phase will get diabetes. Once you get the symptoms of diabetes, it will become clear that you should have paid more attention to the prevention of this disease. Best way to prevent diabetes is to

EXERCISE:

If you want to decrease the probability of getting diabetes, here are a couple of pieces of advice for you. If you are over-weighted, try to reduce your body weight. Inactivity promotes type 2 diabetes. In contrast, exercise causes muscle fibers to become more responsive to insulin, the chemical signal that tells cells to absorb glucose, which provides energy for your body? These exercise-induced muscle fibers also have higher capillary density and greater blood supply, all of which adds up to lower blood sugar levels and a lowered risk of diabetes. So go out and get physically active. Daily physical activity will reduce the glucose level in your blood and thereby make a positive impact on your blood pressure. If you smoke cigarettes, you probably know how much harm it can do to you health.

NUTRITION:

Your diet should be well balanced in terms of diversity, and the quality of foods you eat. A well-nourished body will have much more power to protect itself and be more balanced and well-being.

st month’s health tips was helpful, April is here and getting warmer, but your bones ache, what to do? re are more health tips to help you with your exercise routine.

o be fit, lose weight and look good so lets put these tips to action and look forward to being much healthier. So Go forward and be healthy! by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

Researchers have found that those who consume on average 2-3 servings of whole grains a day are 30% less likely to developed type 2 diabetes than those who rarely consume whole grains. The bran and fibre found in whole grains make it more difficult for digestive enzymes to break down the starches into glucose, leading to a lower, slower increase in blood sugar and insulin. Finally, even if you live a perfectly healthy life style, it is recommended you get regular medical check ups. In order to learn about your predisposition to diabetes, get your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides checked at least once a year.

If you notice some of the symptoms of diabetes like frequent urination, constant thirst, weight loss, or feelings of fatigue and weakness, you should immediately contact your doctor. The sooner the symptoms get examined, and diagnosed, the better chance you have to get a handle on a healing treatment. Diabetes is a serious aliment but with your persistence and devotion to the treatment, as well as good medical care, you will be able to control your diabetes, and have a normal and joyful life

Lettings & Landlords

PANACHE PANACHE E-Magazine agazine E-M

ASK MARIE:

House & Home

Resident Property Columnist answers readers questions: THIS MONTH MARIE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION on WHEN IS IT BEST TO INCREASE THE RENT AND BY HOW MUCH?

B do.

efore any landlord thinks about increasing the rent, there are a number of factors you need to take into consideration before you

The type of tenancy (fixed or periodic), when you last increased the rent, reasons for doing so, market conditions and your tenants. Like any business, buy-to-let is a business and as such, as landlords we incur increased costs like any other business. These could be increased mortgage rates, insurance, management fees and introduced legislation that comes with costs (licensing for example). These are all valid reasons for an increased rent. You need to assess the current market value of your rent to ascertain whether your rent is below market value and you can do this relatively easily by sitting in front

10 MINUTES WITH OUR RESIDENT PROPERTY COLUMINST:

MARIE PARRIS who is available to assist with any residential lettings dilemmas. If you have a question for Marie please forward your enquiry to: info@panacheoccasions.com

of your PC or IPad. Check portals like, Rightmove, Zoopla and there are also a number of other rent index portals that collect up to date information as well. You could also look in the local press and consult with the local letting agents. The next thing to take into consideration is your tenants and when was the last increase. Now try not to let emotions get the best of you here. I meet many landlords who have had the same tenant in occupation for several years and they are still paying the same rent as they were five years ago. Well rent prices have increased since then. I think landlords who find themselves in this type of scenario find it more difficult to increase the rent, for varied reasons, mainly, fear the tenants will leave, and to bring the rent in line with market value or just below market value it will be a huge increase, that is bound to evoke a reaction in a tenant, saying, “we’re off”. Nevertheless, it is either now or never and the former, is best, by implementing small but annual ( or bi-annual) increases is the way forward. Of course I understand if you have good tenants you do not want to lose and thus risk a void period not to mention the fact of incurring re-letting

fees. But it is one of those things that every established landlord needs to do. Once you identify the facts, what you should also do is to approach your tenant about your intention as so to engage their reaction. Remember, tenant relations is vital, after all, if you were a long standing customer of any business it is nice to be informed of this first and it can work greatly to your favour. Facts - assuming all tenancies are on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy, if the tenancy is in a fixed term you cannot increase the rent during this period, unless both tenant and landlord are in agreement, or there is a clause in your contract that states that you can. Few tenants would agree to any increase during a fixed term contract, therefore, unlikely to sign one even if it had this clause. Once the initial fixed term ends you could renew the tenancy with the new increased rent, though not necessary. If the tenancy is periodic, then both parties can agree to the increase and send a rent agreement notice, for tenant to sign (hence speak to them first) and the new increased payment can take effect, giving one months notice, if your tenant pays weekly or monthly, or six months

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

notice if your tenant pays yearly, to start on the same rent due date. If your tenant does not agree to the increased rent you can increase this by using a Section 13 Notice under the Housing Act 1988. There are legal guidelines that must be followed when using this form. If your tenant takes no action after receiving S13 before the date of the rent increase, the new rent will automatically apply. If a tenant pays the increased rent this cannot be contested later. Tenants do have recourse to refer any rent increase matter to the rent assessment committee. You should also ensure that your contracts have clauses that state a rent increase will be made and how often (yearly and it is fair practice to state by how much). By how much you increase your rent - a percentage of the Retail Price Index (RPI) or Consumer Price Index (CPI) or a stated amount per month – you decide. Just a point to bear in mind, if you are not on top of all of those minor repairs before you get your increased rent – do not be surprised if your tenant hands you a long list!

Ultrapreneur MONEY ISN’T SCARCE... AMAZING IDEAS ARE. By Julian

Professional

Hall

Whenever I speak to entrepreneurs who are starting up or grow their businesses they often complain that they can’t find or attract funding for their idea or business. The suggestion is that there’s no money out there and this is the reason why their venture cannot get off the ground or grow to the next stage. It’s almost as though they find comfort in believing that this is a problem which is out of their control and not a failing of their own. The fact is the opposite is quite true. I’ve been fortunate enough to have met and do business with multi-millionaire business owners, investors and venture capitalists who are sitting on huge investment funds or pots of cash. There was a time when you rock up with a business plan written on the back of a cigarette packet and bag an investor or funding for your business idea. And in reality if your idea is good enough, it’s possible to do the same thing today. However, most ideas just aren’t

compelling or fully developed enough to attract the funding it might need to see the light of day. Investors see 100’s of business plans and pitches every year and with the rise of modern technology driven primarily by the dot com and mobile sector, starting up a business is a lot easier today than it’s ever been. You can come up with an idea for a mobile app or website in the pub with a few friends and have it up and running within months or even weeks. There are less and less barriers for the average person to enter into a market with their ideas, and let’s face it, everyone has good ideas. This is great for the investor because it means that they can cherry pick the best ideas and reduce their overall cash risk. It’s always a good exercise to put yourself in the shoes of an investor who’s worked hard to obtain their wealth and now has to risk it on your business or business idea. So let me ask you, is your business or business idea amazing? Are you solving a big enough problem or adding enough value to a niche to really

make a difference? What generally qualifies an amazing idea is whether or not people are benefiting from it. Because let’s face it, an idea is just that – an idea. Investors and savvy entrepreneurs are painfully aware that what may seem like a good idea at first may turn out to be anything from mediocre to a waste of time. So, the challenge for you is to demonstrate that your target audience is actually using your product or service and are benefiting from it. They make repeat purchases, recommend or positively review your stuff and provide the feedback you need to improve your business. Investors are simply looking for the next best thing since sliced bread. They’re looking for next Facebook or Google, an investment where they can see a huge return on their cash, not necessarily overnight but with an idea that has huge potential. Now it’s important to remember that amazing ideas are allowed to be simple ideas. Some of the most amazing ideas since the dawn of time have been

incredibly simple, from the wheel to the light bulb to searching a database which is essentially what Google does, people respond well to simplicity and usefulness. But the litmus test for any business comes when people are prepared to part with their well-earned cash for your offer. Now for many business models there’s a lot you can do to get your idea to market and test this. Granted there are business models which do require a significant investment before you have something to sell, and in this case your expertise coupled with enough market research and feedback. Remember an amazing idea doesn’t have to be something completely new but simply improve on what’s already there. The saying “the best thing since sliced bread” isn’t referring to bread it’s referring

“the best thing sin

nce sliced bread”

to the simple of process of slicing it – very useful but very simple. Entrepreneurs have a tendency to overcomplicate their ideas which not only slows down their entry into the market but makes it had to explain the value to the end customer. It’s ok to have a vision of a product or service with all the bells and whistles but that’s not how it should start. Using Google as an example, they started off as a simple, yet highly effective search engine. They did one thing. Once they mastered that one thing, they then moved into other areas and now have a portfolio of solutions in lots of different markets. This is a good approach, but it requires you to be clear with yourself about what immediate value or solution you can deliver against future add-ons to your product or service.

Chapter 12

PANACHE E-Magazine

I

left full time education after 12 years with 8 O’levels, 2 A ‘levels and an optimistic outlook! Most of the group of friends I had at school were going on to university. I decided that I had had enough of studying and was looking forward to getting a job and earning money.

Fiction

I had planned to join the Civil Service and make that my career. I had not had much guidance in regards to career choices. My parents were happy that I would be able to get an office job and work nine to five. My careers officer at school, instead of suggesting options, had asked me what I wanted to do. I told him that I wanted to work in an office. He told me that with my exam results I could get a job as a Clerical Officer or an Executive office in the Civil Service. He gave me a list of addresses of government departments and told me to write application letters. Back in 1978, unless you had access to an office, there were no easily accessible photocopiers and certainly no email. Therefore, if you wanted to send a letter, you would need write it by hand and send it by ‘snail mail’. I composed a generic application letter, which I then wrote out twenty to twenty five times, addressed it to the various departments and sent then off.

A Jamaican Story A serialised story of a Jamaican boys journey from the hills of Trelawney to the golden streets of Brixton. After about a month waiting by the letterbox and only receiving a few replies informing me of their sorrow at their inability to offer me a post, I accepted my sister’s offer to enquiry at her work place (The head office of the Construction Industry Training Board) as to whether they had any jobs going. As it transpired there was a job as an inwards clerk available and after not much of an interview I was offered the job. I was a ‘big man’ now! The job involved sourcing and packaging stationery request from training boards across the country and then posting them. There were four of us in the store room. The supervisor was a white guy of about fifty years old who basically did nothing all day, apart from telling us about his many fishing trips to various parts of the country and playing darts on a dart board we had hung on the wall opposite the door to the office. Next in age was a Maltese guy named Vincent, who although a practising Jehovah’s Witness, did not talk about his religion unless he was asked. Finally there was Matt an eighteen year old white guy who became my first real ‘white friend’. I had found while at school that white people, on the whole, did their thing and

that black people, on the whole, did theirs. To me this was not strange. Matt and I, however, had a great deal in common. We both loved playing darts and practically all sports apart from hockey. We also had the same sense of humour. And most important of all we were both Star Wars fans! I remember us going around greeting everyone we met by placing our clenched fist across our hearts and beseeching ‘The Force’ to be with them. With Matt I did not ever feel that underlying sense of unease you feel when you are in close proximity with someone you don’t understand. Therefore, it was not a problem when for some reason, maybe because we had never been, we decided to take the Dover ferry across to Boulogne for the day. We learnt an important lesson that day! We had saved a week’s wages and were filled with excitement and anticipation at our first trip on a ferry. The ferry was huge and had rooms, bars and a casino. After a few beers we decided to try our luck at the roulette table. Knowing nothing about roulette we decided that it would be easier to play red or black as you had a fifty/fifty chance of winning.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

Looking back, I think we may have been more intoxicated than we realised at the time because we began between us to play red and black, which meant, in our intoxication, that at least one of us would win. Not taking into account that one of use

would lose. When we got to France we had enough money to buy two halves of larger and a cheese roll between us. We then spent the rest of the day walking around aimlessly, waiting for the ferry home.

Our first trip on a ferry ........

THE LAMB THAT WAS SLAIN FOR US by Pastor Chidi J. C. Akunma

Belief

Dear Reader, In this edition, I write to arouse in us the need to put ourselves in remembrance of what our Lord did for us.

J

esus is the Lamb of God who died for the sins of the world (John 1:29). Jesus mission became clear to mankind only after He had been crucified on the cross. Yet the scriptures reveals in Revelations 13:8 that “the Lamb was slain from the creation of the world Peter repeats this truth in even more detail when he wrote about the precious blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:18-20 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. (NIV) The reality is this. The Blood of Jesus was shed for us before the creation of the world, but was only revealed to us when Jesus was crucified on the cross, died and rose again. Not even Satan knew about the shed blood until then. This truth, once understood, should have great implications for our faith and victorious living over Satan, sin and sickness.

Chidi JC Akunma is the Founder and Senior Pastor of Dominion Faith Ministries International, Southampton, England. A Church that is committed to transforming lives, empowering people and raising a people of the Kingdom to fulfil their dominion mandate. He is a dynamic preacher, teacher, leadership mentor, business consultant, and motivational and inspirational speaker. His passion is to empower people. His belief is reflected in his passion for teaching and mentoring all those who come into his sphere of influence.

The punishment that you and I deserved had been paid. Those who would believe in what He did for them would be saved. This isn’t just about a gruesome death. It is about the greatest act of love ever committed by Almighty God Himself that He could save His own creation from the wrong decision of sin. The very man He created did not even recognize Him. The very man He created rejected Him, tortured Him, lied about Him and put Him to this terrible death. Jesus then went into the belly of Hell so that He might suffer the punishment that every single human being deserved for their sin. Hell found that it could not hold an innocent man and had to release Him as He rose from the dead.

The cross is then lifted into place. The left foot is pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees flexed. The victim is now crucified. As he slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, excruciating, fiery pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain—the nails in the wrists are putting pressure on the median nerves.

Understanding Crucifixion?

As the arms fatigue, cramps sweep through his muscles, knotting them with deep relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push himself upward to breathe. Air can be drawn into the lungs but not exhaled. He fights to raise himself in order to get even one small breath.

May be getting understanding how crucifixion works will help you appreciate what our Lord Jesus Christ went through for you and me. A medical doctor provides this physical description: The cross is placed on the ground and the exhausted man is quickly thrown backwards with his shoulders against the wood. The legionnaire feels for the depression at the front of the wrist. He drives a heavy, square wrought iron nail through the wrist deep into the wood. Quickly he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow some flex and movement.

As he pushes himself upward to avoid this stretching torment, he places the full weight on the nail through his feet. Again he feels the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between the bones of his feet.

Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream, and the cramps partially subside. Spasmodically, he is able to push himself upward to exhale and bring in life-giving oxygen. Hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-renting cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain as tissue is torn from his lacerated back as he moves up and down against rough timber. Then another agony begins: a deep, crushing pain deep in the chest as the pericardium

slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart. It is now almost over—the loss of tissue fluids has reached a critical level—the compressed heart is struggling to pump heavy, thick, sluggish blood into the tissues, the tortured lungs are making frantic effort to gasp in small gulps of air. He can feel the chill of death creeping through his tissues. Finally, he can allow his body to die.... All this the Bible records with the simple words, “And they crucified Him” (Mark 15:24).

Just A Few People Understand

What wondrous love is this? Many people don’t know that pain and suffering Jesus went through for us. Jesus did nothing to deserve this type of death, yet he went willing to die, in between two thieves, God’s love was with a specific purpose—to rescue all men (who would believe) from the grips of the great liar and deceiver— Satan! Jesus has shed His Blood and made it available for us all. His Precious Blood converts the lost and inverts our position. The Precious Blood of Jesus inserts us into God’s fellowship and grants us access to Heaven (Hebrews 9:14-15; 10:19. The Blood of Jesus asserts the blessing of forgiveness (Eph 1:7), and also subverts the power of hell (Hebrews 2:14)

Last Word

To enjoy all the benefits provided by the Blood of our Lord Jesus, you need to accept the sacrifice he made for you and enter into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I would therefore, like to invite you to do so now by praying this simple prayer.

“Lord Jesus, I need you. Please forgive me for all I have done wrong. Please come into my life and begin to lead me. I pray this as sincerely as I know how. Amen” If you have prayed this prayer, you are now born again. Congratulations! I will like to hear from you. Please contact me and let me know of your decision. I have a free gift for you to help you begin your new life in Jesus. Need Prayers? Please email or text your prayer request or call: Email: dfministries@hotmail.com; Tel: +44 (0) 7749061345
