indrush Foundation presents a story featuring riots, rebellions and revolutions in a free exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in Kensington, London.

Making Freedom (6 November 2013 – 21 December 2013) takes guests on a journey up to and beyond 1838, when nearly one million Africans were freed from enslavement in the Caribbean.

This is the first time that important collections from Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), the National Maritime Museums, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Archives, Anti-Slavery International, and the Imperial War Museum have brought together in an exhibition.

The exhibition will celebrate those who resisted enslavement, those who fought to end it, and others who worked in Britain to improve social, economic and cultural conditions in the Caribbean.

Visitors will learn about the unrest – such as Jamaica’s 1931 ‘Christmas Rebellion’ that hastened Emancipation, as well as the struggles for independence that ensued.

The exhibition features 83 images from the Society’s Collections and includes a number of audio-visual booths for visitors to delve deeper into individual stories.

Members of London's diverse communities have participated in the design of the exhibition by giving feedback on a version of Making Freedom at the Marcus Garvey Library in Tottenham.

GUBA AWARDS IN FOCUS.

he Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards is an annual award ceremony that begun in October 2010. The Founder Dentaa, sought to create a platform to highlight the talents of the Ghanaians living and working in the UK. GUBA’s objectives are centred on the premise of showcasing excellence; with the hope that it elevates and empowers others in the community to aim higher and reach a pivotal point where they can be recognised for their achievements. In the UK, multicultural integration and unity has been positively encouraged over the years; the GUBA Awards provides a platform to see the contribution and efforts being made within the Ghanaian Diaspora towards the betterment of Great Britain.

GUBA has since grown to become an organisation that showcases and honours the efforts of successful Africans working diligently to contribute to, enhance and improve the African community in the UK. GUBA’s achievements have been outstanding to date. In 2012, GUBA partnered up with the AfroCaribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) to appeal for bone marrow donations. The appeal was to help 22 year old Dennis Gyamfi and 8 year old RoseAnne Ofori who were in a critical condition and urgently needed a match. The appeal brought about a generous amount of potential donors that can help others in a similar position.

George Ameyaw is a proactive and idealistic individual.

His passion for creating a better world drew him to the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards.

George began working with GUBA due to their outstanding contribution to the Ghanaian and UK community, as he hopes to ensure that the efforts of unsung heroes do not go unnoticed.

He is the Head of PR/Marketing/Sponsorship for GUBA Awards.

During the London Olympic Games, GUBA in conjunction with award winning Ghanaian producer, Kaywa, composed a song to celebrate and support Ghanaian athletes and Africa as a whole, in spite of the low number of Ghanaian representatives at the Games.

Following the Olympic Games, GUBA joined forces with the Ghana Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Clement Kofi Humado, to call for greater participation in sports from Ghanaians ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games. GUBA’s partnership with the Minister of Sports is a bid to get 200 athletes to Rio and to improve Ghana’s sporting image in the future.

“London’s diversity is its strength, and the GUBA Awards showcase all that is great about this city. The Awards celebrate the valuable cultural and economic contribution that the British Ghanaian community make to London, while also strengthening the Ghanaian voluntary and community sector.

FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, also invited GUBA Founder Dentaa to a FIFA commemoration of Arthur Wharton, the first black British professional footballer – who Was also awarded a posthumous GUBA Lifetime Achievement Award. Dentaa was chosen because of her ambassadorship of the Ghanaian community, an honour which will always be a motivation for GUBA to reach higher heights.

GUBA's efforts and its role in recognising Ghanaian achievements in the UK, has been recognised and supported by several dignitaries. Leading up to the GUBA launch which took place on the 5th of September 2013 at the House of Commons, Mayor of London- Boris Johnson, gave his support for GUBA.

The impact of the GUBA Awards within the African community, supporting and encouraging growth in business, education, sports and entertainment, make it a deserving winner of the International Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence Award 2013.

Other notable MPs such as Adam Afriyie and Dianne Abbott also gave their endorsement of GUBA. “I am delighted to support the 2013 GUBA Awards. On the 29th of June 2013, GUBA in collaboration with Network Diaspora Professionals Limited (NFDP) hosted the inaugural Ghana Careers & Opportunities Fair at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel. The Fair provided an unrivaled opportunity for prominent companies to meet talented Ghanaians seeking to establish careers in Ghana. The Careers fair, a first of its kind in the UK, generated a lot of positive feedback and connected a number of employees with qualified participants.

In conjunction with The Economist, GUBA held The Ghana Summit on the 29th to 30th of October 2013 in Ghana. This summit brought together over 150 key Ghanaian policymakers, international businesses leaders and influential thinkers to explore the country’s continued economic growth and human development. Guests included HE John Dramani Mahama, President, of Ghana and HE Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, Vice-president of Ghana. This summit was a significant and beneficial gathering for those concerned in the growth of Ghana in the next five years.

This year, GUBA have also been the recipient of a number of awards. On the 29th July 2013, GUBA was adjudged winner of the International Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Excellence Award. A national campaign was launched to find Britain’s leading

companies that support and enrich their communities. GUBA emerged winners after competing with over one hundred nominees and was invited alongside other corporate organisations to receive the award.

GUBA FOUNDATION EDUCATES THE COMMUNITY ABOUT AUTISM

he GUBA Foundation was set up to tackle a broad spectrum of issues.

The foundation's current focus is on Autism, with the aims of finding ways to provide services to autistic children and families whilst, reducing the stigma attached to it within the African community.Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects communication, social interaction and how people make sense of the world around them.

Experts were on hand to discuss child and adolescent psychological behaviour.

Attendees gained unique insight into why autistic children have physical and emotional outbursts, thanks to a short film from American teenager Carly who has learnt to communicate to her parents using her computer.

Since its formation, the GUBA Foundation have held a number of successful workshops and seminars geared towards educating the public about Autism. These seminars are attended by affected families, friends, service providers and provide an interchange of information and available services.

The recent autism event was held on the 12th of October 2013 at the Bernie Grants Art Centre, to highlight Autism awareness within the African community. It brought together personal and professional experiences of people living and caring for those with the condition.

A 19-year-old student who was raised alongside her autistic twin brother, and an autistic mother-of-four caring for two sons with the condition, shared their inspirational

There was video footage of GUBA Foundation’s founder Dentaa on her recent visit to an Autistic centre in Ghana’s capital Accra. Attendees learnt more about a partnership between east London-based Whitefield Schools and Centre and a school for children with special needs in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

Core to the event was the need for the Black community to dispel the often negative views and social stigma associated with Autism, which can deter parents from seeking treatment.

One mother who had refused professional and financial support, appealed to parents to accept the condition and move forward.

Another urged parents to focus on the many positives that are often associated with Autism such as their ability to be truthful, creative and have a retentive memory.

The star of the event had to be Joshua, who despite only being eight years old has performed numerous computer-simulated surgical operations and has two Oxford University course certificates under his belt.

The Autistic youngster from Tottenham, who wants to be a surgeon when he is older, treated parents to a power point presentation on the workings of the human body.

Although unable to attend the event, Tottenham MP David Lammy endorsed the charity’s hard work and issued a statement, saying: “I wholeheartedly support the work that is being done to ensure that families are able to look to their community for support when tackling the everyday challenges of dealing with Autism. Through engagement with your community, parents and families can meet the needs of their loved ones and thrive as individuals and active community members.”

Autism affects one in 100 people in the UK’s 63 million population, and over 100,000 people living with the condition come from black or ethnic minority communities, according to the National Autistic Society.

This autism event is one of many more to come. The GUBA foundation aims to ensure that autistic families receive the help and support they require, whilst, ensuring that they are fully informed about all the aspects of it.

Tell us about the premise behind your business Oasis Websoft aims to solve Africa’s problems using software technology. Our mission is to build infrastructure that ensures that the West African sub-region is not left behind in the continuous evolution of information technology. We are in the middle of a dramatic and broad technological shift in which software companies are poised to take over large swathes of the economy.

Facebook, ThoughtWorks, Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Pixar, Google, Flickr and Skype are all software companies building real, highgrowth and high margin businesses. The low start-up costs and the vastly expanded market for online services perceive a global economy that for the first time will be fully digitally wired. This makes an even stronger case for the need of our software development products and services here in Africa.

How does it feel to be nominated for the Development award and what would winning mean to you?

Our nomination came as a shock to me, my team and our online following. It is a reminder of the goals we set out to achieve by starting up a software company in the heart of Accra.

RED: BUSINESS & ENTERPRISE It will be a morale booster for us to win the GUBA award and will help other budding young African Ghanaian entrepreneurs who need to be attracted to careers in Technology.

What do you think about the GUBA Awards?

GUBA Awards is the motivation the doctor ordered for achieving our continent’s potential for innovation, social and economic advancement.

Where does your motivation come from?

My motivation comes from God almighty and the loving support of my family. I am also motivated by my zeal to lift the continent out of its current state by moving production from exploitative extraction of raw materials to symbiotic extraction of human expertise and time.

Do you have any plans of expanding your business?

We have currently contributed to a few socially impacting software in the East African region so we hopefully want to collaborate with more software start-ups in other African countries. We aspire to build quality mobile, web and software solutions that will solve everyday problems.

Are you involved in any other projects?

At Oasis we believe in giving back to society so, we teach software and web development online for free. We make the source code for our software freely available for other developers to build on and help the software evolve. In the last year we also worked with the Ghana Association

of Women Entrepreneurs, educating them on how to use technology to boost their businesses. We hope to assist more people and organizations on using technology to boost the economic growth of the continent and to decrease poverty.

What message would you give to aspiring and upcoming entrepreneurs?

Ask God to direct your ways, be humble and do not restrict yourself creatively. Avoid dream killers and follow your dream. Stay focused!!!

pportunity arises out of difficult situations as they say and this is ever so relative to Edwin Broni-Mensah.

After experiencing difficulties in accessing tap water when away from home, Edwin came up with a cunning idea to get easy access to water whilst simultaneously helping those deprived of water in poorer nations – that was the birth of GiveMeTap. GiveMeTap bottles are stylish, reusable bottles that enables the owner of each GiveMeTap bottle to easily get free water refills from partnering shops across the UK. Proceeds from the purchses goes towards the funding of water projects across Africa.

Edwin and his GiveMeTap team have been involved in many water projects in rural areas in Ghana and Malawi. As a hardworking social entrepreneur, with a passion for water related issues, his scheme is the perfect mix of business and philanthropy.Edwins efforts have been recognised by many and as a result, he has been nominated for a GUBA Blavo Young Entrepreneur Award.

GUBA gives Edwin a chance to tell us his story Tell us about the premise behind your business As a student at the University of Manchester, I was trying to stay really fit and hydrated while writing my PhD. I found that my water bottle did not last the day and it was really expensive to buy bottled water on the go and noticed a huge stigma attached to asking for tap water in cafes. At the same time, I started to realise the plight of millions of people in Africa who do not even get a choice. They have to drink dirty, diseased water. I founded GiveMeTap in order to eliminate these problems.

How does it feel to be nominated for the Young Entrepreneur Award and what would winning mean to you?

I feel honoured to be nominated for this award. I have worked really hard to make GiveMeTap a reality and it is always great to have your achievements recognised.

Winning the award would do amazing things for GiveMeTap. It is exciting to receive an

What do you think about the GUBA Awards?

The idea behind the GUBA awards is spot on.

I feel that as Ghanaians, we can do a lot for our hometowns with the opportunities we are presented here in the UK. It is important for us to give back and for us to be proud of our heritage.

Where does your motivation come from?

Every day I wake up and I think about the times I have spent there or out in other African nations. I have seen how vital the work I do on a daily basis is for the people of these small, isolated communities. My motivation comes from knowing that I am working to help them achieve a better quality of life through water.

Do you have any plans of expanding your business?

The only way is up for GiveMeTap – First, I expanded from Manchester to London and now the whole of the UK. I now plan to take GiveMeTap scheme to America next year. We’re also expanding as a team and recruiting interns and recruiting full time staff to truly grow the business.

What message would you give to aspiring and upcoming entrepreneurs?

Make the most of the resources at your disposal. In the beginning, you may feel that

there is a lot going on. With each stage you learn as you go along that there are people around who can help you along the way.

How does it feel to be nominated for the Fashion Fusion award and what would winning mean to you?

It is such an exciting and humbling experience for us and the continuous success of the brand has proven that hard work pays off. Winning would definitely reiterate what we are all about; which is empowering women to be ambitious and successful whilst still looking and feeling feminine.

What do you think about the GUBA Awards?

GUBA is a fantastic platform for encouraging entrepreneurs and to think it was established by a Ghanaian, just shows we are all capable of doing great things .

Where does your motivation come from?

I studied nursing in school and worked in two hospitals in Accra, namely Korle-Bu

I have seen people from all walks of life share similar life experiences, good and bad and this has taught me to value people no matter their background. I gave this up to pursue fashion and my motivation lies with the relentlessness with which we face the challenges life presents us .

Do you have any plans of expanding your (fashion) business?

Absolutely , as the brand grows , we are hoping to expand production as well . We were invited to India , Japan and London this year to pursue retail opportunities and we cant wait to see what the future holds for the brand.

Are you involved in any other projects?

In the next year or two we are hoping to kickstart a movement that will initiate an industry in Ghana where established players and up and coming designers compete in a healthy way. They will get the opportunity to make money and show what we have to offer the world where fashion is concerned.

What message would you give to aspiring and upcoming entrepreneurs?

God does all things and my story is purely out of the love God has for me. A balance of hard and smart working ethics , talent, ambition and honesty will take you far. In all this the most significant lesson I have learnt is, never stumble on others as you climb to the top .

Do you have anything else you would want to add?

Hopefully we will engage in more international runway shows , open a flagship store and grant accessibility across the continent and the world. Most importantly, we hope to establish Duaba Serwa in the hearts of Ghanaians and those that indulge in what we have to offer.

I think GUBA is a great event that honours the hard work Ghanaians have put into their respective businesses, and I commend the organisers for growing it to such a prestigious platform.

Where does your motivation come from?

I am always motivated by the eagerness of my clients. I want them to love their pieces and feel confident that they have a quality piece of clothing. I am particularly driven by different clients reactions to their orders; it pushes me to try to be better.

Do you have any plans of expanding your (fashion) business?

We have some plans for the next year, but they are still a work in progress.

Are you involved in any other projects?

We work on projects with Vlisco and currently working on a project with top Ghanaian stylists- House of Cramer.

What message would you give to aspiring and upcoming entrepreneurs?

Know your target market, work on the quality of your product and make sure you market yourself well.

roviding educational, training and health care services to the underprivileged in West Africa is the objective of the Motec Life UK Charity. As a UK based charity, Motec Life helps to improve the livelihood of those in need by transferring technology and skills necessary for a better healthcare service.

In order to facilitate change in the healthcare service, Motec Life run a series of programmes which include; lectures and workshops with participation from medical, nursing and paramedical personnel.

The standard of healthcare in developing countries is central to Motec Life’s mission.

The exceptional work carried out by this charity, has led to their nomination for the British High Commission Charity of the Year award.

Tell us about the premise behind your Charity.

Motec Life UK seeks to bring about the reversal of brain drain. We also hope to bring about a new mechanism to bring about brain gain for mother Ghana.

How does it feel to be nominated for the Charity of the Year award and what would winning mean to you?

It is great to be seen to be making noticeable contribution to the development of our motherland Ghana. Winning will be an encouraging achievement and participation in the event will be a good feeling. The real winners of the award are the people of Ghana.

What do you think about the GUBA Awards?

GUBA awards is a noble organisation and we are very privileged to be part of it.

Where does your motivation come from?

I believe that no life is worthwhile unless it has been useful and made a positive difference to the people we see or never get to know. I also find motivation in Benjamin Disraeli’s quote: ‘The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches, but to reveal to him his own’ Finally, I believe that ‘knowledge is the engine that drives economic growth and Africa cannot

Do you have any plans of expanding your Charity?

In many ways yes! We plan to increase membership drive and expand role capacity building in our hospitals and health care training institutions in Ghana.

Healthcare services in Sub-Saharan Africa is a work in progress. Organisations such as Motec Life are working tirelessly to improve these services. We are impressed with Motec Life UK’s work so far and encourage everyone to get involved.

Are you involved in any other projects?

We are currently involved with the World Orthopaedic Concern UK, working towards improvements in trauma and deformed foot care in children, in sub-Saharan Africa

an is what he thinks’ and this very law of attraction is what Hannah Oyewole lives by. Growing up under challenging circumstances, Hannah’s belief in her dreams has contributed to her success. After attaining a first class honours in Business Management, she decided to share her life experiences in the motivational, self development book- ‘I Dare You’ Hannah is a notable motivational speaker, gracing several platforms and empowering young people to go after their dreams.

In 2011, she set up the Young Ladies Club, an empowerment and development organization that challenges young women to step into their destinies.Self development and success is at the core of Hannah’s message and her commitment has led to her nomination for the GUBA Rising Star Award.

GUBA gives Hannah the platform to inspire us with her story, in this insightful interview.

Where does your motivation come from?

My motivation firstly comes from my foundation and belief in God. I am a firm believer in the power of faith and believing in yourself. It also comes from my family upbringing, things were not always easy however, I believe that the challenges that I experienced growing up, helped me to become the person I am today. Lastly, my motivation comes from the ability to touch people’s lives. I love influencing people and inspiring them to live their dreams. I aim to continue to use my book ‘I Dare You’ and also my organization: Young Ladies Club as a vehicle to empower my generation.

How does it feel to be nominated for the Rising Star award and what would winning mean to you?

It is a real honour to be nominated for the Rising Star award, I believe in the power of recognition and I am very grateful to be recognized by the GUBA Awards organization.

I believe that winning the award would allow me to raise the bar for others who aspire to achieve something great with their lives.

Winning the award would truly allow me to send out the message that nothing is impossible and despite your challenges in life, something good can come out of it. It would also act as a good source of motivation for me to keep on going and inspiring people who need to hear my story.

What do you think about the GUBA Awards?

The GUBA Awards is a very prestigious event and it is something that is needed within the Ghanaian community and the African community as a whole. It is evident to me that there is a clear vision of excellence for the awards ceremony. I believe that the GUBA awards is an established brand which will continue to go from strength to strength.

Over the forthcoming years I will be excited to see the GUBA Awards expand and touch more lives.

Do you have any plans of expanding yourself and your brand?

Yes, I plan to host events under my brand to influence other people to live their dreams. I also aim to offer more products to customers to teach them how to keep moving forward even in the face of adversity. I aim to emphasize the importance of motivation and believing in yourself.

Are you involved in any other projects?

There are a few projects that I am partnering with in order to highlight the importance of self-esteem and confidence in the young generation. The projects will take place in educational institutions and local communities.

What message of motivation would you give to other young people?

I would advise people to never, ever give up and to stay focused on their vision, purpose, goals and dreams. We walk the face of

this earth once, so make sure you leave an indelible mark that people would remember you by.

Baggage Claim review: I expected so much more WOODEN: Paula Patton

I

’M NOT a fan of black movies, I’ve missed them all, Love and Basketball, The Wood, Big Momma’s House, Soul Food and all Tyler Perry movies. However, on advice from many of my friends I have started to catch up on my black movie watching and I started with the new flick, Baggage Claim.

To say that this is a black movie would not be correct, it is a film which features a predominantly black and star studded cast in Paul Patton, Derek Luke , Jill Scott, Taye Diggs, Boris Kojoe, Jenifer Lewis, Trey Songz, Lauren London, Tia Mowry, Christina Milian, Terrence J and Djimon Hounsou.

But it is more of a rom-com that attempts to entertain everyone.

In the film Montana Moore (Paula Patton)

is a 30-year-old successful flight attendant, devoted daughter and sister, supportive friend, however, she is single.

Her relationship status is thrust into the fore when her youngest 22-year-old sister gets engaged. From that moment on Montana, with the help of her two best friends Gail (Jill Scott) and Sam (Adam Brody), has 30 days to find a man who wants to marry her and be her date at her sister’s weddings.

And this is where the humour comes in – because she only has a month to find the perfect man they devise a plan to use her airline “status” to conveniently meet up with eligible ex-boyfriends who will be flying home for the holidays, racking up 30,000 miles and a series of somewhat comedic if, at times, predictable events.

As mentioned earlier this flick has a lot of eye candy, there is no shortage of good

I am sad to say, because I like Patton, that she remained unconvincing and rather stiff throughout the film. Her performance was either overacted in parts or completely underwhelming and annoyingly, when she spoke, the actress sounded like she was either drunk or had a speech impediment.

a husband. Scott has been supplied with the best one-liners in the film and adds a welcomed dose of humour throughout.

Other notable appearances from Taye Diggs, Trey Songz and Tia Mowry keep the film rolling along; Mowry’s execution of a jealous mistress is excellent and still has me smiling.

For the plot of the movie, like most romantic comedies, you can see it a mile off; there were some very predictable moments, with the most predictable being the film’s ending.

I won’t spoil it for you, but from the first ten minutes of Baggage Claim, you know exactly who will end up with whom.

And yet, that is one of the endearments of a romantic comedy, it is not the clever plots, brilliant acting or amazing cinematography that will keep an audience enthralled , it is merely a case of will they, won’t they, when’s the big kiss?

THE BEST SUPPORT: Jill Scott (L) offered the best performance in the movie The saving grace of Baggage Claim is undoubtedly the supporting cast, particularly Jill Scott. The singer turned very good actress plays Patton’s colleague and friend. She also convincingly plays a funloving nymphomaniac air flight attendant, who helps execute the plan of finding Patton

Don’t expect Oscar winning performances from Baggage Claim, but if you are looking for a fun, easy-to-watch, heart-warming experience, maybe shared with your friends and a glass of rose wine, this is the movie for you and it certainly worth an addition to your DVD collection.

Baggage Claim is out now in cinemas nationwide through Twentieth Century Fox Films.

he time came again for the premier fashion event Bridgetown Barbados Fashion Week 2013 (BBFW 2013), it was held October 25th27th. It got off to a rainy start but it didn’t deter the fashion lovers who braved the heavy showers to head to the Barbados Independence Square to take in the grand spectacular. Luckily, it seemed as if the designs from the first night were of such great caliber that they chased the pesky rain away for the next two nights. This year’s ready to wear Spring/Summer 2014 designer line-up featured not only from Barbadians, but also designers from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and The Netherlands. Additionally, for the first time ever there were kids as well as plus-size fashions added to the designer line-up.

Proudly beating the home drum was designer Shanika Burnett with her Shakad Luxury Resort Line. She showed great craftsmanship with an easy on the eye women and men collection that made you want to head on a tropical escape to an exotic island. Shanika’s designs were made of natural fibers and portrayed colourful tie-dye and handpainted creations. Another Barbadian designer was Rhea Cummings Jordan designer/model who debuted her Aria Urban Fashions collection. Rhea’s ensembles had a flirtatious air about it

as they were vibrant and fun with very structural designs, daring hem lines and bared midriffs. The models wooed the audience as they parade the designs with their coquettish antics.

Continuing to fly the Barbados flag was Isabelle Baulu with her Sea Reinas swimwear collection. The line was very feminine and chic with a range of stunning swimwear from bikinis adorned with frills and fringe accessories to sultry one pieces. She created for the woman who loves elegance and sass. A regular to BBFW and crowd favorite among the fashion lovers present was Barbadian designer Kesia Estwick who showcased two lines Keisa Couture and Kiss Urban Collection. Known more for her urban designs and glampunk style, Kesia didn’t disappoint with her couture

line of which some of the avant-garde gowns were featured in a photo shoot of this year’s British Ireland Next Top Model. Kesia showed that she has many sides to her with an ethereal collection that exhibited intriguing details on her elegant pieces ranging from sheer sultry pieces to more fairy tale couture gowns in an array of prints, textures and colours. Perfectly paired with M.I.A “Bad Girls” music track, her well-constructed urban collection which also include some men pieces was edgy and full of plenty spunk. Even though she used minimal silhouettes and geometric shapes her designs created a frenzy.

Adding something different to the regular line up of BBFW were the two Barbadian lines, La Rosa Couture and Giordan William. Roazana Moseley of La Rosa Couture modeled her creations for the full-figured woman. From the runway it proved that curvaceous women can still be classy, chic and voluptuous. She had a collection that ranged from relaxed flowing pieces to form fitting pieces. For the first ever kids fashions show, the duo of Giordan William debuted a collection with Lemon Lilly for the girls and the Bearded Gecko for the boys. The young models brought loads of smiles from the faces in the audience as they strutted down the runway in charming designs that were every the bit age-appropriate, fun and very cute.

The designers from the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago were not to be out done as they too won the affection of all present. Menswear designer Dawn Scott of Dawn Creations demonstrated that he was a great craftsman with immense comprehension of tailoring.

His designs were impeccable with clean lines and exquisite details that turned the

male models looked like “stylish CEOs” as they came the runway. “The two part team of Anthony Red of Red House Fashion men line and Charu Lochan Dass of her self-entitled women line, teamed up to showcase the collection Island Fusion.” This line was a great hit with the fashion lovers; the lucid women’s line was very feminine and sensual with an air of elegance and sophistication while the men’s line was laid-back and relaxed with more casual approach.

The lone designer from St. Vincent was Kimon Baptiste of Kimystic Designs.

With her use of flamboyant colour she brought a true Caribbean feeling with her designs that oozed of comfort and effortlessness. The collection exhibited from casual pieces to more classy elegant gowns. The final designer for BBFW 2013 was Carmichael Byfield hailing from the Netherlands who presented his men’s line collection from House of Byfield. From the first model entrance to the finale presentation, he fascinated the audience with his exciting collection that consisted of an array eye-catching colourful modern day suits. His designs were created for the more extroverted and stylish man with that big personality as his designs were loud in both colour and prints.

They say all good things must come to an end and after three nights of fashion, BBFW 2013 produced

The finalists each representing a town, village or administrative region in Trinidad and Tobago and competing in fashion (Swim Wear and Evening Gown) and knowledge of T&T (Research Project on their area and topical knowledge). In addition, each contestant also paraded in a Carnival costume. To be eligible to participate, each contestant had to have a link by parentage, heritage or lineage to Trinidad and Tobago.

In addition to the competitive elements of the pageant, the evening featured performances from several exponents of the main cultural art forms of the country – pan, mas, dance and music.

The capacity audience was taken back in time to a bygone era brought to life by the Muraldo D C, a dance theatre company. The artists performing on the night included the reigning UK Soca Monarch Trini Boi Joocie, Deborah Romain on Pan and vocals, Lady Saxophonist Sandra Grant, Soca Artiste

Kanato Alleyne and Thelma Douglin on the tenor pan. The national anthem was sung by Jamima Douglas songstress also known as J Doe. The event in partnership with the YAA Centre was sponsored by Western Union and Caribbean Airlines. The Second Runner Up to the title holder was Shani Robertson representing La Brea and the First Runner Up was Natalie Ramnarine representing Tamana.

By sheer coincidence, the winning contestant, Miss Tobago, was crowned by the Tourism Attaché of the T&T High Commission, Ms Achi-Kemba Phillips, who herself hails from Tobago.

Media support was received from The Voice, the Flyer newspaper, Culture Pulse, Panache Occasions, Carib Direct, ITZ Caribbean, Trinis in London,Business & Life Style Magazine and Soca News.

Carnival costumes were provided by Wassiville, Trinity Designs, Euphoria, Genesis and Mas with a Difference.

The newly crowned title holder of “Miss Trinidad and Tobago UK" will receive a trip to Trinidad and Tobago courtesy of Caribbean Airlines with accommodation at Cascadia Hotel Trinidad and Lyn Manor Villa Bucco Tobago. She will also receive several prizes including a Gold Gilded picture frame from Campbell’s of London, a Designer hand bag from Simon-Hartman of London, The T&T Gold Book from Hansib Publications, jewellery from Anna`s Silver Jewellery and lots more.

IS INSTAGRAM THE NEW “NEWS”? MAYWEATHER, MILEY AND THE ECONOMIST.

ot watching TV has some disadvantages.

Like, I didn’t know that Miley Cyrus was Hannah Montana until yesterday (!)…I know right?! I’ve never actually watched the much talked about performance but feel as if I ‘get it’ having seen the pictures and nonstop commentary on the social networks.

Now that you’ve finished shaking your head in disbelief, let me tell you the other reason not watching TV has its disadvantages.

Instagram video!

So it’s Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather is fighting Saul Alvarez and there’s no way I’m going to stay up until the early hours of the morning to watch it. I only really want to hear the end result.

I wake up on a fresh Sunday morning in the British countryside and wonder - “who won?”

So I do what any well-connected Internet junkie does and reach for my iPhone (after considering the 30 second walk downstairs to the TV was simply ludicrous.)

I hit the blue app button with the familiar white F and start thumb flicking through my wall. I get to my brother in laws page and watch some poor quality 15 second Instagram videos of the actual fight on TV the night before. I see Mayweather land a few good blows but I can’t see who’s won. Being impatient I hit the round black button on my phone and decide to forget about my desire to know the result of the fight. I head over to Mashable instead to check up on what’s really important – technology news J. Not more than 2 minutes later I get a call from a young entrepreneur who I coach. So he gets the important stuff out of the way first by asking me if I watched the fight. We know the answer to that, I gave it to him and asked if he did. He said no but in order for him to find out who won, he said “I checked my Instagram, typed in his (Floyds) name and got the news.”

He said “news” and “Instagram” in the same sentence??!!!??!

WHAT!?

When he said that, it’s as though my perception of Instagram had reached a tipping point. I then realised that Instagram has completely dominated a demographic – The under 30’s!

Both the video posted by my bro in law on Facebook and this young gentleman both used Instagram. One used it to capture moments of this title fight and the other to get news about it. At that very moment my mind whizzed back over the last 12 months where I had heard ‘young people’ reference Instagram and realised this isn’t a secondary network to Facebook. To most ‘young people’ this is their primary network.

Now you might be sitting there saying “So what Julian, so what”. Well it’s all about targeting dear reader.

I just checked the Instagram profiles of 4 companies, one of which is running a national scheme to help you people under 30. One of them had 17 million posts, yes that’s right 17 million posts! The other had 30 posts. The funny thing is that the organisation that only had 30 posts, the last being 5 days ago have been struggling to reach their target audience since their campaign launched 9 months ago.

To be honest, I too wasn’t sure why this organisation had trouble reaching their

audience and now I know why! Am I saying that just because they’re not active on Instagram that their marketing sucks? No, but they’re not on Tumblr or Vine either! And if you don’t know what Tumblr or Vine is then you probably don’t need to market to the under 30’s. And if you do need to market to the under 30’s then perhaps you should take a look at them.

I spoke at a conference just last week when someone from the audience after my short discourse on social media said “Julian, to be honest all these terms are completely new to us and it’s a struggle to keep up!” I get this comment every time I speak at a non-techie business forum and here’s my answer.

We no longer live in a time where the world advances every 10 to 20 years (TV, radio, newspapers and magazines). We live in a time where they advance every 10 to 20 months or less.

We’re in the middle of a revolution much like the industrial revolution and things will never be the same again. In the midst of a revolution, an “evolution” is required otherwise guess what – you become extinct.

So as much as I’d love to provide companies who are still struggling with “digital” some comfort and say it’s “going to be ok”, I’m afraid it’s not going to be “ok” it’s actually going to be

“better”. Technology has enabled customers to do more, more often and at less cost. The job of businesses in this environment is to embrace this change, respond to it and take action. The type of action that becomes a culture, the way things are done and not just another bullet point on the marketing plan.

It IS the marketing plan.

I had to remind the CEO of that particular organisation that it’s not his job to action digital; it’s his job to get the best people in his team to do so. That provided some relief, not just for him but for others in the audience too.

I say “some” comfort because the concern that was left was that they just didn’t understand social or digital even if someone else handled it. I told them that if social was a person they would still be a child in primary school – impossible to understand.

But what you can do, as you would with a child in primary school is show them love, talk to them, stay engaged and as they grow so does your understanding of them.

To close, I’d like to share a video about social media in 2013. Don’t worry it’s not one of those fancy schmancy animated videos with loads of facts that make you feel behind with the times. It’s a entitled “Social Media 2013” hosted by “The Economist” no less; so quite a grown up discourse, delivered by people who like me are old enough to be Hannah Montana’s Dad.

n September 1939, like some 800,000 other children during World War II, our mother was evacuated out of London and away from the Blitz.

Dispatched by steam train and delivered unceremoniously to a distant family member in a small rural hamlet in Kent, South East England she attempted to blend into country life, while our grandmother stayed behind to take up a full time position at Fortnum and Mason in London’s Piccadilly.

During her time there, our grandmother would regularly serve dignitaries and aristocrats, most memorably The Princess Elizabeth (our current Queen) a story which would be recounted relentlessly throughout her lifetime at all and any social gathering large or small, and along with our grandfather she went on to develop not only a delectable palette, but an insatiable taste for finery.

Cancer Black Care (CBC) is a not-for-profit cancer charity established to serve black minority ethnic (BME) groups in the London are. It was founded in 1995 by Isaac Dweben following the death of his elder brother in 1992 from prostate cancer. He discovered there was a lack of appropriate information and the level of cancer awareness amongst his Afro Caribbean Community was very limited and need to be addressed if further deaths from preventable and treatable cancers were to be avoided. Other marginalised groups were also experiencing lack of information and advice that was sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity.

In 1996 the first branch was opened in Hackney East London. At that time CBC provided information and emotional support for the Afro Caribbean community.

The service developed the enquiries came from further afield new areas of the ethnic community and the demand for additional services increased.

In response to this the Brent Branch was opened n 2001 followed months later by the opening of the Lambeth Branch. Our services by this time embraced many of the ethnic communities within London and the services include language translation, setting up of support groups and counselling.

Towards the latter end of 2002 CBC created partnership links with other voluntary agencies in Manchester and Birmingham to facilitate satellite services in the delivery of caner information and advice.

CBC provides a comprehensive support service to ALL members of the community, who are affected by cancer. We offer a safe, confidential, neutral place, where service users, carers, families and friends can meet up to support each others cultural and

emotional needs. As every family is unique, our service is committed to the interests of our service users and their families.

We aim to enhance the quality of life by reducing fear, tension, bitterness and misunderstanding.

Make the Right Choices HEALTH: Your body is a complex machine that requires the right fuel to keep it running at full efficiency. The good news is that you don’t need expensive super foods or fancy supplements to achieve this; a simple balance of complex carbohydrates, proteins and good fats will do the job. By simply sticking to natural foods and steering clear of junk food you’ll feel more energized and find your body runs much more effectively.

EXERCISE: Just 30 minutes of daily physical exercise can burn an extra 1,500 calories per week; this totals 39,000 calories (the equivalent to over 11lb of fat) over 6 months. If you think this sounds difficult

to achieve, try thinking of as many ways as possible to keep your body moving.

Get outside for some fresh air at least a couple of times a day, walk up and down escalators, park the car further out of town, use the stairs instead of the lift and walk for a bit longer to get your lunch. It all helps!

NUTRITION: A healthy, balanced diet is simple; aim to fill half your plate at lunch and dinner with salad and/or vegetables (such as steamed broccoli or mixed peppers roasted in olive oil), a quarter with protein (such as lean meat, lentils or oily fish) and a quarter with wholegrain carbs (such a brown rice, whole meal pasta or quinoa). Follow this approach every day and you can’t go too far wrong.

The warmth of summer lends itself much better to the typical raw food diet, but there is no need to completely deny yourself the many benefits of raw food just because it’s become colder.

ue to our ‘Christmas miracle’, we were able to truly enjoy the festive season. Everyone got what they had been wishing for, within reason of course. I remember that Ash bought his girlfriend a very stylish paraffin heater to help her through the winter. In the early eighties central heating had not become common with anyone I knew. Gas fires were usually found only in the living room or ‘Front room’ as we called it, so if you wanted to keep warm in any other room you would use a paraffin heater. I remember the call of the paraffin man as he would make his rounds. Oily, Oileee!

We bought a washer dryer and I bought a new snooker cue.

It was the New Year and I was quickly losing faith in getting a positive response to all the job applications I had been sending out. My New Year’s resolution was to try harder.

As fortune would have it I did not have to proceed with my new determinism, on the first Monday of the New Year I received a letter from Her Majesty’s Civil Service inviting me to interview for the post of Clerical Officer.

It was only a letter offering an interview, but to me it was a vindication of the effort I had made. I was going to ace that interview. I showed Carol the letter and she was as excited as I had been, she rang her family and told them of my good news. I didn’t tell my family as I prefer to tell them when the bird is in the hand.

With the letter came an application form the likes of which I had never seen before. It would take at least a week to complete and they asked about every area of your life. Luckily for me I hadn’t lived that much yet so I didn’t have to write too much.

Soon it was time to leave. I was looking sharp (suit, shirt and tie, shoes buffed and shiny) and feeling ready. This was going to be a good day.

I got to the offices in good time and introduced myself to the receptionist; she asked me to sit and advised me that she would let the panel know that I was waiting. Did she say ‘Panel?

I sat there trying to look cool, while inside a little voice kept repeating, “Did she say panel”.

The clerical officer post was with the Lord Chancellors department of the civil service.

The Lord Chancellor’s Department was a United Kingdom government department answerable to the Lord Chancellor with jurisdiction over England and Wales.

“Mr. Brown, please come this way” the receptionist gestured towards a large double door. This was it, my stomach felt tight and my mouth was dry, but I was determined to stay in control. I would get this job despite ‘the Panel’.

Created in 1885 as the Lord Chancellor’s Office with a small staff to assist the Lord Chancellor in his day-to-day duties, the department grew in power over the course of the 20th century, and at its peak had jurisdiction over the entire judicial system and a staff of over 22,000.

The doors were opened; I entered and came face to face with the Panel. There were all sitting behind a very large, imposing desk and on my side of the desk was one lonely chair. I said good morning to everyone and took my seat.

The Panel consisted of five middle aged white men. The applicant was 22 year old Jamaican who would now find out if he could influence these bastions of the British system to his own ends. I was introduced to everyone by the middle person of the five. I acknowledge everyone and apologised in advance if I forgot anyone’s name.

I was on point, they needed me and they wanted me! Why not? I was young educated and articulate. I had no reason not to answer all questions truthfully and the truth set me free.

I didn’t like working in an office! I did want to deal with the public! If I perceived that I was being unfairly treated I would complain and I might leave! When I answered I tried to look at as many of the Panel as I could.

The interview was drawing to the end and I was waiting for the question. It came. “Have you any questions for us? I was asked. I replied. “You have answered nearly all the question I had thought of asking, however, there is a question I would like to ask you which may help me in any future interviews I may have, if I am not successful here. What do you as interviewers think of my performance as an interviewee?”

I looked at the faces across the imposing desk and I could see faces growing red before me. I wasn’t fazed. I understood in that moment that I had put them on the spot, they were not expecting to give a personal opinion. The middle person, now looking a little less flustered, answered. He felt that I was an articulate well-presented person who had performed very well at interview.

My heart leaped at the words. I wanted to shout out YES! But I kept cool, shook hands and said goodbye.

Outside in the middle of the Strand, I ran jumped and clicked my heels.

am ashamed to say that even though there have been 5 previous shows of Giants of Lovers Rock, this was to be my first. Granted I had seen the flyers and trailers in years gone by, but had not made it a point of duty to attend.

Therefore I was quietly excited (you have to be quietly excited to appear cool you see).

The Universe, as if sensing my barely containable anticipation, tried to calm me down with a traffic jam caused by an accident in the Blackwall Tunnel. However the Universe did provide social networks like facebook, which kept me posted until I got to the Indigo O2.

Coral Consciouslee Entering the event, I was pleased to see that to all intents and purposes things had been started on time as I hate it when you have to wait hours after the scheduled start time for the show to start. (It’s a pet peeve of mine).

Friends were greeting each other; the stars were mingling with patrons at the bar. Those attending seemed ready to have a good time and the promoter of this musical extravaganza, (Orlando Gittens) did not disappoint.

Always dependable Compere’s Robbie Gee and Eddie Nestor provided the laughter and the music and dancing made for an electric atmosphere. Peter ‘Honey voice’ Hunnigale whipped the crowd into a frenzy, complimented by the melodious sound of Klearview Harmonics. It was also a pleasure to see different faces in the line-up, like Frederica Tibbs and Dennis Pinnock. I’m name dropping now! Paulette Tajah looked and sounded beautiful and I could hardly contain myself when Lorna Gayle started to sing “Prophesy”, my hand shot up in the air (Lighter less I’m afraid) in recognition of an epic reggae song.

With my access to all areas pass, I was in my element, talking to stars and taking pictures, (one of the many perks to being a columnist with Panache E-Magazine) to give you my view of ‘that’ event you may have missed.

There was a sombre moment of reflection were we paused and remembered a comedy

genius, Felix Dexter. Time was also made available to Daniel de Gayle’s father, Orin Lewis to ask for Bone Marrow Donors to come forward from the Black Community. Come on guys, lets’ do it for us!

Of course the grand finale of this truly marvellous night belonged to Jamaican Superstar, Frankie ‘Dancehall’ Paul who took us to dizzy heights of ecstasy with his clear dulcet tones – I was singing “Sarah, stars operate in your eyes!” all the way home.

To say I enjoyed myself is an understatement.
