Vaping – “to vape” To inhale a smokeless, odourless, and tobacco-less, electronic cigarette, e-cigarette or e-cig from a battery-powered gadget that converts liquid into vapour. What does a Vaepen contain, and how does it work? Vaepen e-cigarettes contain a battery, an atomiser and a replaceable or disposable cartridge. The cartridge can be nicotine free or contain 6-16mgs of nicotine (your choice) in a solution of either propylene glycol or glycerine and water in a variety of e-liquid flavours. When you puff on a Vaepen, a sensor detects the air flow and starts a process to heat the liquid inside the cartridge, so it evaporates to form water vapour. Inhaling this vapour delivers a hit of refreshing nicotine free flavour or if you choose; a hit of nicotine. Contact Info Tel: 0208 720 6759 Email: info@vaepen.com

New Year

A Refreshing Approach to the New Year By: Claudia Andrews

T

his year we need to take all our New Year’s resolutions put them in a bag and throw them away!

These resolutions however do not hold up for long and usually last for a maximum of 3 months.

If a new year calls for new beginnings then we ought to get new and progressive habits. Therefore, this year we need to get out of the cycle of making New Year’s resolutions. Why do I say this? It seems that each year we arduously make resolutions only to break them and wait on another year to redeem ourselves. This in turn leads to a cycle of resolution-regret, leaving most people in the same position as the past year.

These statistics all seem to indicate the same thing: New Year’s Resolutions do not work!

Resolutions have become a fad. Many people seem to set the same resolutions, wishing for the same things. The 5 most promised resolutions are: • • • • •

Losing weight and getting fit Getting a new job/ starting a new career Enjoying life and Travelling more Being kind, helpful and charitable Spending more time with family and friends

These popular resolutions are part of the reason why gyms are full from 1st of January, charity donations go up for a few months and CVs get circulated at an incredible speed.

As we have entered a new year, let’s step back and find a new way of doing things. We are all well aware of our successes and failures of 2013, so here is a practical self- improvement guideline to help you set up goals for this year. • List all the things that went well, take note of the things you did to achieve them and replicate these things for a successful year. • Be realistic- set goals with feasible timelines and be pragmatic about them. • Love yourself! If you truly love yourself, you will make decisions that will improve your life. • Love thy neighbour and the world will be a better place. Self- improvement is a necessary part of life and as young people, it is imperative that we do so, to guarantee a good future. Let’s be realistic with our goals and make 2014 one of the best years of our lives!

Chapter

20 NEW YEAR REFLECTIONS

I

t’s the New Year and Time for a little reflection methinks.

At 6years old and living in the hills of Trelawney, rural Jamaica, I had believed, quite reasonably, I think, that England was a place in the sky amongst the clouds. After all, I had seen aeroplanes flying in the sky and had been told by my aunty that she had seen both my Father and Mother board a plane and that the plane had taken off into the sky on its way to England. Why would they fly up to the sky if that wasn’t where England was? Why not walk or take a bus? When I was told that I would be flying to England I was in high anticipation. England in my mind seemed something like heaven. However, you did not need to be dead to go there. It only took about ten hours to find out that my two theories above, about England were wrong. England was not a place in the sky and it certainly wasn’t heaven! When I think back about my journey to England and compare myself with kids now and then,

16

JANUARY 2014

/

I can’t help but wonder at the difference. I travelled 5,000 miles at thirty six thousand feet across the Atlantic without a chaperone! At the age of six! I had gone through immigration and had waited patiently for parents, who I no longer recognised, to collect me. All without a tear drop. In the UK: Teenagers have baby sitters to look after them in their own home; Children get taken to school by their parents; Children say, “No” to their parents’ and live to see another day!; If you have a cold you don’t go to school; You can make noise in class! If the teacher tells you off or hits you, your parents’ beat the teacher up. What a ting! It didn’t take me long to integrate all the new norms and customs (I think because of my young age I was very open to new data), however, I was astute enough to realise that I would have to live two different lives in order to survive in this, England. You see, my Mum and Dad’s house was Jamaican! Outside- where they could not see me-was England.

New Year

A Jamaican Story A serialised story of a Jamaican boys journey from the hills of Trelawney to the golden streets of Brixton. By Clayton Brown

Every now and then I would try to sneak a little bit of England in to the house with me. “Mum did you know that English children don’t have to go to Sunday school?” I would venture. “Yes mi know, the poor children dem don’t get a chance to learn bout Jesus” she would say. Being subtle never ever worked, come to think of it being blatant proved just as ineffective. I gave up trying, because thinking about it, whatever freedoms I did not have, at the time, I was quite happy not to have. It was never a wish of mine to be like my British peers when it came to their behaviour. I liked good behaviour! You can do a lot with good behaviour; if you treat people with manners it is really difficult for them to treat you with anything other than manners. Try it. If they don’t treat you with, at least, reciprocal manners then you will have learned where to place that person in the compartments of your life. To me it felt good to have respect for my Jamaican Heritage and re-assuring that a little part of England would always be Jamaican. Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Make Life Ch Resolu

M

aking a New Year resolution is so nice. It gives you a good feeling to make a decision to make a new beginning and have the pleasure of imagining a big improvement to your life. You may have heard people say that their New Year Resolution is to exercise more, spend more time with their family, or do volunteer work. The possibilities are endless here are a few more:-

• My New Year resolution is to create a plan that can put this right and start living and working to that plan • My New Year resolution is to travel and see the world. • I must lose weight! • My New Year resolution is to be more debauched than ever. • My New Year resolution is to post on forums at least once a week. • My New Year resolution is to quit smoking. • My New Year resolution is to EXERCISE MORE POSITIVE THINKING. • My New Year resolution is to let you know just how much I love you. • My New Year Resolution is not to make any New Year's Resolutions. 18

JANUARY 2014

/

• My New Year Resolution is to do more blogging so here goes...! • I kept last year’s resolutions, so I resolve to keep these. • I am going to double my income. • I will buy my own home. Unfortunately it has been said that a New Year resolution is something that goes in one (y)ear and out the other! A New Year resolution is, after all, just another name for a goal. Making a New Year’s Resolution is as simple as saying to yourself, "My New Year resolution is..." The problem though is seeing them through. This requires you to focus your thoughts and committing to see them through. One trick to make certain you do actually complete your resolutions is to take some immediate action. As soon as you decide on a resolution do something about it to make it a real & tangible objective. You must also make achieving your New Year resolution exciting and enjoyable; you must have a big reward ready for when you achieve your goal. Think of something that will really make it worthwhile and focus on this reward while you are carrying out the steps you promised yourself to do.

New Year

hanging New Year utions & Goals By: Carl Henry The New Year Resolution is a fixture in our lives even if you don't consciously make one you will be aware of the possibility of a new start next year, although making one or more New Year resolutions is an obligation to many. The idea of a New Year resolution is believed to have started in Babylon. Babylon, as Iraq was known in the old days, is reputed to have the earliest known custom of celebrating the New Year - an amazing 4000 years ago! The Babylonians celebrated New Year in March which was more logical than January, because spring is the time for renewal in nature and was a time for planting for the farmers. The Babylonians were also the first people to start making New Year's Resolutions and, no, losing weight wasn't their biggest concern, it was returning borrowed farm equipment. A majority of people around the world believe that what you do on New Year's Eve or on the First Day of the New Year sets the tone for the way things will turn out for the rest of the year. I suppose it certainly does show your intent. It goes without saying that New Year is one of the biggest celebrations worldwide and has been since ancient times.

in different parts of the world had their own ideas about when the New Year started, this was because the year was based on their own calendars which could be regulated by solar or lunar events, or a combination of both. Therefore people around the world celebrated the New Year at different times, although surprisingly many of the beliefs regarding the New Year were very similar. What is clear is that the changing of the year is a significant event where everyone tries to have a good time so if you want to change your life for the better it is the perfect moment to do so because the event is so significant. It is now in your hands to create your perfect life. What will your New Year resolutions be? How will you follow through next year? Hello, I'm Carl Henry, I turned my life around 6 years ago and now I've produced a step by step guide on how to make instant improvements to your life & design it to perfection. the same way. Thinking and seeking, combined, will be part of your goal this year. But just how differs for each sign.

2014 Horoscopes Some may be quietly exploring cyberspace in the confines of their own home. Others may go out and about, socially expanding their horizons. In either instance, one skill is emphasized above all others: communication. While we think of communication strictly as sharing information by talking, writing, or body language, we forget that sometimes we communicate without any outward expression at all, through actions and even thoughts.

full of motion and excitement. The next, you’re touching base with people you love to gain “brain fuel” for the next big project. And then, out of nowhere... something else comes along that keeps you and your loved ones talking for hours! The things you learn and share thus continue to enrich your life in unpredictable ways.

Whether our goals are love-related, careeroriented or just for bettering ourselves, stronger and smoother communications remain essential throughout 2014 and into 2015.

The Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) year has an organic flow. Instead of the hurly-burly of throwing yourself into tricky situations, the art of effective communication will grow within you like a seed in the Earth. Though outside stimuli still have an effect, ideas have time to gestate slowly, growing almost of their own accord. For Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), 2014 presents any number of surprises that will keep you on your toes. Uranus’s presence in Aries means that you may be zinged every now and again with a revelation that makes you deeply reflective. The year, as a result, follows a back-and-forth pattern of introspectiveness and action. One moment you may be out and about,

As a result, you gain an aura of “quiet wisdom.” Even when you feel like isolating yourself from the outside world, you’re still praised for the well-nourished concepts you bring to the table when you’re ready. Pluto’s year-long position in Capricorn charges your words and ideas with a natural, productive effectiveness... Whatever you have to offer, it’ll be the right thing at the right time.

2014 Horoscopes Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) have two beneficial planets taking up residence within them. Jupiter is in Cancer at the beginning of the year, and Neptune is positioned in cosy Pisces. Put them together, and they spell an abundance of expression. So much to say, so much to hear, so much to do, and so little time to do it in! With every word you give, you receive just as much in return. For Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), communication is more constructive. Talking and listening become like girders on a skyscraper - they’re components of a larger and more important objective. You may not be stopping to smell the roses much this year, but you will remember how the roses smell anyway! In the meantime, you’ll be gaining the satisfaction of watching your personal goals achieved little by little. Your vision of the future you’re trying to create will help inspire others with their own aims. There may still be the occasional hesitation, but the overall motion will be forward, propelled by the connections you make with friends and strangers alike.

Unlike the Fire or Earth signs, there may not be much time to “process” this information. Back and forth it goes, but it doesn’t seem there’s ever enough time to let it sink in! The good part is that with so much going on, you gain more knowledge even if you don’t feel like anything’s changed! You’re gaining the skill to think on your feet and act wisely even while you’re in constant motion. So if you’ve taken it for granted before this year, communication will become your key to unlock doors you’d thought were sealed up for good! Read your personalized horoscope (click your sign’s icon on the top right) to discover just how 2014 is going to help you open those doors to new and exciting horizons! A NIGHT FULL OF ART AND CULTURE.

T

By Jacqui Brown

he late Nelson Mandela would have been very proud of the tribute held at the colourful “Pride of the Motherland—– FREEDOM” which took place at the Yaa Asantewaa Arts Centre (originally known as ‘The Factory’), 1 Chippenham Mews London W9 2AN on Saturday 14th December 2013. A unique and historic evening in celebration of our African Roots and Culture in all shades of black, through Arts, Music, Dance and Fashion kept the audience fully entertained and highlighted our proud and exciting heritage.

So, the Designers collections were undeniably exciting, alluring, stunning and breath-taking. The entertainment was pulsating, rhythmic and energetic. And guests were suitably satisfied and happy to have attended one of the most intriguing cultural events just in time for Christmas. Look out for information for 2014’s show. This yearly event is not to be missed. Credit to a few of the fantastic designers: • OMGOSH Designs • Georgoe Myrak • Kwame Koranteng • Bombokloth Clothing • Deuce’s Leather • House of Esther • Promise D Bakare • Erwin Michalec • Fee Uhssi • Africooo • Wa Farma Batik

Organised by the 2013 BEFFTA AWARD winner for Best Art Director Reuben P. Joseph who collaborated with a creative production team introduced reputable black Designers and models to showcase their work in theatrical presentations complemented by live African warrior drums, poetry, steel bands, and calypso and Soca music. In addition to the catwalk runway shows there were Art, Photography, Sculptures and a Carnival Costume Gallery and live mannequins located amongst the vibrant action.

From the ‘Beginning’

The soil for the seed, the land itself. The foundation and structure, the substance and raw material The clay The earth and the deep earth, The clay that holds trees in soil.

From the ‘End’ Objects in vessels such as flowers, water and soil recycling life’s essence - never ending. The ‘Source’ represents the start of every vessel I make; The inspiration, the ideology and the unspoken word, representing vision, feelings and cultural experiences. needs the sunlight to flourish. The fertile soil helps replenish its vitality, creates ripe fruit, sustains healthy leaves and strong stems. So does MY CRAFT AS AN ART FORM; It feeds off my culture and draws from its traditions as one would draw from a well to quench thirst. It has its roots in the language of my forefathers. The eyes feed off this rich abundance of heritage and adorns its splendour, as the mouth feeds off African food when cooked in its native clay furnace. It reminds me of the infusion between the village traditions and culture And the ethics which are passed down from generation to generation.

Every handmade ceramic I create tells a unique story of a rich measure, culture, texture, mixture and splendour; valuing a people indigenous to the motherland (Africa). www.facebook.com/asantheartist. please like my page thanks.

This fusion has a silent voice and speaks of individuality, beauty and family. My silent voice being emulated through my craft; representing the continent revealing my contemporary fresh new light, life of Art,

ear Readers, I hope 2014 brings all your blessings forward.

London Notting Hill Carnival Enterprise Trust (LNHCET) & The Shades Of Carnival Gala in collaboration with The Klub International Management Company hosted an event on Friday 13th December 2013, which took place at the Trinidad & Tobago High Commission in London. It was truly a fantastic occasion where all who came enjoyed themselves. Below you will see some of the outstanding pictures that were taken. The evening started off with a storyline which linked the origination of the concept of Carnival to Africa. It journeyed to South America & Europe where it attained the name Carnival. The journey continued to the Caribbean islands (specifically Trinidad and Tobago) and finally ends on the streets of London as what is now the London Notting Hill Carnival. As the night progressed, I was honoured to receive the Posthumous Award on behalf of the Maestro, Pioneer, and Icon of Afro Beat Music FELA Anikulapo-Kuti. His son, Seun Anikulapo-Kuti, was able to express his thanks on behalf of the Anikulapo-Kuti family

by way of a phone link to the event. I was presented with the Award by His Excellency Mr. Garvin Nicholas - Trinidad & Tobago High Commissioner to the Court of St James (England). I can recall back in August of 1997 when the sad news was heard on the news, everyone was talking about the death of the Maestro himself Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the man who made the Afro Beat sound. Everyone was talking about doing fitting tributes to him, but I could see that nobody was mentioning his family. So a number of us said let’s see if we can make contact with the AnikulapoKuti family, which I said I can do for I knew a number of ways to reach the family. On doing so, I was able to have talks with Femi Anikulapo-Kuti who agreed to come and perform his first concert in London as a tribute to his father. It was then agreed that it would mark Nigeria’s 37th Independence Day Celebration and a live Tribute to Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Looking back, you can imagine what an honour for me that was back in 1997 and I feel just as honoured now in December 2013.

4. The contract between you and a building contractor should include, for example, total build costs, and build period, stage payments, a list of agreed fixtures and fittings, employer and public liability insurance, penalties for late completion and retention period/ monies.

9. Carry out test holes on your land to establish depth for laying the foundations for your Caribbean property, as deep foundations can be very costly.

5. It is advisable to retain the services of a project manager to oversee the construction of your Caribbean home under a separate contract to that between you and your building contractor.

10. Remember that if your joints are beginning to show signs of wear and tear and one of the reasons for you relocating to the Caribbean is so as to enjoy the benefits of early morning sea baths, a single-storey property with even floor levels will provide for easier manoeuvring (and wheelchair access) than a Caribbean home spread over two floors.

6. Do not permit any stage payments to be released to your building contractor until the current build stage has been completed satisfactorily. 7. It is advisable to be fully satisfied with the design of your Caribbean home before construction work commences, as changes can be very costly.

Consciouslee What’s Happening around Town

HAVE A SECURE LIFE FOR 2014 This is a time of a year, when one reflects and looks back. Some of us make resolutions which we have no intention of keeping, others make no such promises, but just decide to dispense of habits, things or people who no longer serve their best interests. Others make no changes and are quite happy to live the way they have always done. As one who is committed to improvement and excellence, I thought of what encouragement and inspiration I have received over the last 12 months and what I in turn would like to encourage with as 2014 approaches. I am reminded of something that happened to me over 20 years ago. My then husband and I were living with a good friend, whilst we saved up for our mortgage. I remember waking up on a bright Saturday morning in August to hear my husband asking if someone had forgotten to lock the front door during the night because it had been left open. No one could remember how this happened. A 56

few minutes later our good friend and I heard my husband make a loud exclamation – all his musical equipment (he was the musical director in our local church assembly) had disappeared. We had been burgled as we slept peacefully upstairs. After calling the police, we tried to work out how this happened. We had shut and locked the front door when we came in that night. The backdoor was locked and so were the windows, how was this possible? How had this person or people managed to move all our musical equipment out the front door without being heard or spotted? It was only after the police had come to the property to check for forensic evidence that we found the answer: a small window in the front room had been left open –there was a footprint of a small person on the glass. The burglar(s) had found a way in. A small person got through the window and opened the front door. From time to time I have thought of that story – in fact I spoke about it once in my local church assembly many years ago. That house where I lived represents my life and even though I might think my life secure and positive, if I am not vigilant and

careful negativity can find a way in and slowly and surely steal my hopes and dreams, thus destroying my confidence and ability to achieve. As we enter into 2014 my encouragement to all and sundry is that we make sure that negativity never finds a way in to what we hold dear in our lives. I encourage you to examine all your fears, the things that have caused you lasting anger, situations that has robbed you of your confidence, people you cannot forgive: these are the “windows” that negativity will use to steal your joy, peace, love and happiness. Realise that you are unique, that you have a purpose and that it is your duty to be the person you were created to be. This means that you must become secure and confident as that person. There may be people that no longer belong in your life. There will be

situations that you will have to walk away from, people you have to make peace with, but this will be necessary so you can travel on the path towards your true self. Equally there are some situations which you cannot walk away from but will have to learn how to “manage” where you find yourself in life. When you know that all your goals, aspirations, dreams and aims are held secure then you will feel confident. That confidence will give you the freedom to be that person you were created to be. Freedom is priceless and precious, but can be acquired. So take a step back even for a few hours and look at your life – are there any windows open? If so, do you know what you need to do to close it? May your good get better and may your better be blessed x

innie Mandela cut a very lonely and reflective figure at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, seated next to Jacob Zuma, the man who is now responsible for the future of South Africa. I couldn’t help but wonder, what was going through her mind as she sat in front of her ex husband’s coffin. Her head was slightly bowed, suggesting a position of both humility and reflection. Reflections on historic moments in lives filled with great accomplishments, accomplishments which changed South Africa.

This is a very poignant picture for me! I know that she endured great hardship in her fight 58

for freedom for South Africa and for black people as a whole. In the fight to free black South Africans from the evil oppression of segregation and the apartheid system, she was fighting to free all black persons’ around the world. Winnie Mandela, alongside Nelson Mandela, made me realize that we can all change the negative narratives in ourselves. Instead of feeling victimized, l will strengthen my spirit! You may be able to break my body, but you will never break my spirit. It was this courage and strength of spirit that fuelled my interest in her. Growing up, I remember seeing her virtually every day on the news headlines, either being forcibly removed from her home or else surrounded by crowds of people and police. But she always seemed composed and was always prepared to show the strength of her convictions. It almost became normal to see the atrocities of the Apartheid system in South Africa on prime time TV news. However, a debt of thanks must go to the journalists in their efforts to keep the World focussed on what was happening in South Africa. Winnie fought to keep her husband’s name and the aims of the struggle for freedom in our minds and it was with the help of journalists that the message was delivered to the outside world. The whole world was

In My Opinion able to watch as she fought on. We saw her persecution at the hands of the police. Her isolation as depicted in the movie (Mandela Long walk to Freedom 2013). The accounts of her personal life may be open to scrutiny, but it cannot detract from her contribution South Africa’s freedom. The life that she led was a difficult one to say the least. It was fraught with dangers: kidnapping; prison or even death. But it was a life lived with rightful conviction, a conviction to see South Africa free from the evil of apartheid. Winnie Mandela, I salute you for your efforts in bringing to an end an evil and repulsive regime. Let us applaud the example that you and Nelson Mandela showed us. Let us use dialogue, compassion, strength of spirit and forgiveness to make this World a better place.

My experience w

I

have always been interested in the West Indian herbal remedies my parents and grandparents used for their various ailments. My interest, however, was purely intellectual. (I’m one of those people who shies away from taking a tablet for a headache. When I am prescribed pills by my doctor for severe back pain I read the little leaflet inside which contains a list of all the possible side effects and usually decide that I would rather bear the pain) I wondered how the first African brought to Jamaica knew which plant did what. I thought that obviously, someone with the requisite knowledge had survived the Trans Atlantic voyage and by word of mouth the information had been disseminated. However, the Caribbean region consists of over 3500 mainly volcanic islands and islets grouped into 22 island territories lying in an archipelago east of Central America. Together, the land area covers approximately 240 000 square kilometres and is home to a richly diverse flora, with over 13 000 species of flowering plants, including approximately 205 endemic genera.

60

JANUARY 2014

/

So the question remains, if 205 plants/ herbs can only be found in this region, how did ‘bush doctors’ know which to use and for what? Herbal medicine is the oldest form of healthcare known to mankind. Herbs had been used by all cultures throughout history. It was an integral part of the development of modern civilization. Primitive man observed and appreciated the great diversity of plants available to him. The plants provided food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. Much of the medicinal use of plants seems to have been developed through observations of wild animals, and by trial and error. As time went on, each tribe added the medicinal power of herbs in their area to its knowledgebase. They methodically collected information on herbs and developed well-defined herbal pharmacopoeias. Indeed, well into the 20th century much of the pharmacopoeia of scientific medicine was derived from the herbal lore of native peoples. Many drugs commonly used today are of herbal origin. Indeed, about 25% of the prescription drugs dispensed in the United States contain at

least one active ingredient derived from plant material. Some are made from plant extracts; others are synthesized to mimic a natural plant compound. So there we have our answer, trial and error along with observation. Sound scientific principles! It wasn’t until I had an accident with a machete whilst visiting my mother in Jamaica that I actually had first-hand experience of herbal remedies. I was tending to some corn that I had planted, and like all Jamaican farmers I travelled with my machete or more accurately my nephew’s new machete which he had spent the last 3 days sharpening. I was going to mould up the dirt around the roots of the corn, but after doing the first two I realised that they were not yet big enough and decide to stop and give it another week or so. As I stepped out of the wet dirt and unto the dry ground my foot slid and I fell. Time went quite slowly during the fall, I knew while falling that I had the machete in my hand and that I needed to let it go to stop myself falling on my face. I let go

of the machete and stretched my hand out to cushion the fall, however, instead of the machete falling flat somewhere away from me, it landed on its edge and bounced back up whilst I was falling and met my head. I felt a dull sensation in my head. I looked at the machete and saw blood on it. I put those two facts together and put my hand to my head to confirm my suspicion. I shouted for someone, and luckily my cousin-in-law Denzil was in the kitchen with the window opened and heard my cry for help. When he got to me I told him immediately that I needed to go to the hospital. He didn’t need me to tell him. The copious amount of blood issuing from my head spoke volumes. Denzil is a Rastaman who had met my cousin and decided straight away (so he told me) that he would marry her. It so happened that he also new every herb and ‘bush,’ and how to use them as herbal remedy. He rushed me up to the house told my nephew to call a taxi and hastened to the kitchen, he came back with some iced water which he poured over the cut then gave me a towel to

hold against my head to stem the flow of blood.

When mature, leaf of life bears clusters of bell shaped flowers.

He then went over to one of the banana trees in the garden and cut the bud out of the young banana plant and brought it over. He told me to raise the towel. I asked him what for, He told me that the sap from the plant would hold the wound together and ease the flow of blood. I asked for another towel and wondered where the taxi was.

Traditional Uses Leaf of Life-Scientific Name: (Bryophyllum pinnatum – Crassulaceae) Other Names: Tree of Life, Life Leaf, Air Plant, Miracle Leaf, Aporo, Kalanchoe Parts Used: Leaves, Stems, Juice In Jamaica the juice of the leaf of life is used to treat colds and coughs. The juice is sometimes mixed with salt or honey, for headaches, colds and bronchial problems and hypertension.

It seemed I had faith in herbal remedies to cure a cold or stomach ache maybe, but would rather trust a doctor and his needle when it came to what I felt was a life threatening issue. However, although not for me, the use of complementary and alternative medicines is burgeoning globally, especially in developed countries. However, over 80% of the population in developing countries depend on traditional healing modalities, including herbal remedies, for health maintenance and therapeutic management of disease. As in other developing regions, herbal remedy use is common in Jamaica and the Caribbean and I have decided to highlight some of these herbs and plants and their uses. The first of which is, ‘LEAF OF LIFE’. Leaf of life is native to Africa but is now grown widely in tropical and sub-tropical areas. It is a succulent plant that grows up to 1.5m high, with reddish tinge to the stems. The leaves have indented edges, from which other small plants can grow. 62

JANUARY 2014

/

The heated leaves can be applied externally for abscesses and swellings. Similar use is made of leaf of life in Africa, where it is also used for earaches, eye problems and as a diuretic. In the Eastern Caribbean leaf of life is used as a tea for colds and the juice used externally for sores or to apply to a headache. In Brazil, leaf of life is used for respiratory problems from asthma to bronchitis. It is also used to treat kidney stones and gastric ulcers and externally for boils, burns, ulcers, insect bites and eye infections. Modern Research Several studies have documented that leaf of life is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal. The plant is also said to have effective antihistamine and anaphylactic properties that might explain its traditional use for asthma, insect bites and stings. In recent research in Hawaii, leaf of life

demonstrated noticeable effects on cancer tissue and confirmed powerful antimicrobial activity. Leaf of life also exhibited pain relieving and anti-diabetic properties in a study on mice in Africa. The reported immuno-suppressant properties of leaf of life might therefore be useful in treating conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Other Uses Some types of leaf of life are available as ornamental plants. These plants are hybrids and do not have the same medicinal properties, therefore they should not be used internally.

first or self aid. However, where there are persistent and serious symptoms, it is always advisable to seek the help and advice of a qualified, medical professional. The Caribbean region comprises several small, tropical, mainly volcanic islands, which possess a rich diversity of flowering plants; hundreds of these plants are used to make traditional folk remedies for a variety of ailments. However, some of the natural constituents in these herbal folk remedies may be injurious to human health

Caution! Due to the immuno-supressant properties in leaf of life it is not advisable to use it internally for extended periods. The information provided is referenced for those who want to do further research on particular plants. The information provided is accurate according to published studies and other sources. The properties and activities of the herbs which are reported indicate possible uses for these herbs in humans. The vast majority of the reported effects are either laboratory experiments with test tubes (in vitro) or on animals (in vivo). All the herbs, however, have a long tradition of use in humans. Body Fitness Tips by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

O

K, if you’re main New Years resolution is to lose fat and get yourself in shape, then these top 5 fat loss tips will at least help you on your way. You won’t find me telling you to buy all sorts of supplements, or pop magic fat loss pills in order to lose the fat, for two reasons: 1: They simply don’t work, and 2: It isn’t that easy! What you need to do is exercise and eat PROPERLY! The tips below will have you burning fat in the fastest time, and in the safest way.

Tip 1: Get a body composition test What a body composition test will do is tell you how much of your body weight is fat, and how much is lean tissue. This will be your start point on your fat loss journey, and will help you to keep track of how you are doing. Body composition tests are available at most gyms or health clubs and should be done every 4-6 weeks. You can then make sure you are burning fat, instead of muscle. If you burn muscle, your body will become less metabolically active and will therefore burn less fat at rest.

64

JANUARY 2014

/

Tip 2: Eat little and often You may have heard this one before, but it still remains one of the best bits of advice when looking to burn unwanted body fat. Eating smaller portions, more often throughout the day will make you less likely to snack on foods that are laden with ‘empty’ calories. It will also help to keep your metabolism raised and your blood sugar levels regulated. You should aim at eating approximately 5-6 times per day.

Tip 3: Raise your Protein intake Protein is the building block of muscle, and your diet should be rich in the stuff. It should, in fact, make up approximately 35 - 40% of your total calorie intake. You will get decent Protein from Chicken, Fish, Lean Beef, Soya, and Eggs. Your total Protein intake should be spread across your 5-6 small meals per day.

Tip 4: Exercise intensely Your exercise routines should ideally be short and intense for maximum fat burning effect. Your weight training days should include large muscle groups, and multi joint movements done at maximum intensity for short bursts. The total workout time should not exceed 30 minutes.

Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Living

Health

Your cardio days should be done at a comfortable pace with intense intervals for 1 minute, every 2-3 minutes. The total workout time should not exceed 20 minutes, and should be done either on an empty stomach, or after weight training. (You should never use a weight that is too heavy to complete the set amount of reps, or over exert yourself to a point of failure)

Tip 5: Cut out Carbs after 6pm This tip usually shocks people into asking “WHY?”, and the answer is simple. If you eat Carbs before periods of inactivity (for most people, this is after 6pm), you will store the excess Glycogen as FAT! As your main aim is to lose fat, storing it is clearly not a good thing. Your body uses Glycogen as energy for everyday tasks, so eating it throughout the day is not an issue as you are reasonably active during the day, meaning you will burn the excess Glycogen. If you take in a lot of Carbs before sitting in front of the telly, it will not get burned, and will turn into the spare tyre that you are trying to avoid! My advice would be Chicken or Fish, and some steamed veggies for your evening meal. Leave the bowl of Pasta for tomorrow’s lunch. Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Giving back at

by Jacqui Brown

For 5 years, proprietors of the Cummin Up restaurant Richard Simpson and his family have been giving back to the community at Christmas by providing a traditional Caribbean Christmas Meal for those less fortunate, hungry or homeless. Richard maintains that the need is great out there for people to be shown and feel the love of God, and this is just one way of doing it. The atmosphere in the restaurant was so welcoming and relaxed; it felt like home. The conversations were typical of any happening in any living room across the country. Traditional Turkey dinner with all the trimmings, plus Caribbean jerked chicken left delicious aromas that brought back memories of times past in faraway

lands. It was so comfortable, in fact, that we all found it very hard to vacate the premises at the end of the night. Now that all the festivities are over, it’s seems the perfect time to reflect on what Christmas really means. I consider Christmas to be a reminder of the birth of Jesus, whose birth brought hope of redemption to the World. Why not bring a little extra hope into someone’s life and commit to volunteer at least 1 hour of your time this Christmas and offer your support to “Cummin Up” to help to support the community of Lewisham Cummin Up restaurant. 389 Lewisham High Street London SE13, opposite Lewisham Hospital.

n September 1939, like some 800,000 other children during World War II, our mother was evacuated out of London and away from the Blitz. Dispatched by steam train and delivered unceremoniously to a distant family member in a small rural hamlet in Kent, South East England she attempted to blend into country life, while our grandmother stayed behind to take up a full time position at Fortnum and Mason in London’s Piccadilly.

During her time there, our grandmother would regularly serve dignitaries and aristocrats, most memorably The Princess Elizabeth (our current Queen) a story which would be recounted relentlessly throughout her lifetime at all and any social gathering large or small, and along with our grandfather she went on to develop not only a delectable palette, but an insatiable taste for finery. Unfortunately for our mother, the all too frequent arrival of wicker food hampers

and gifts from Fortnum and Mason did not bode well with her peers, her host family or indeed the ‘make do and mend’ movement of the era. I suppose you could say, our mother was a ‘reluctant connoisseur’. Be that as it may, our dear grandmother laid the foundations for our love and appreciation, for all things luxuriously and traditionally English. Keeping the Kids Off Drugs Two young guys appear in court after being arrested for smoking dope. The judge says, “You seem like nice young men, and I’d like to give you a second chance instead of jail time. I want you to go out this weekend and try to convince others of the evils of drug use. I’ll see you back in court Monday.” On Monday, the judge asks the first guy, “How did you do over the weekend?” “Well, your honor, I persuaded 17 people to give up drugs forever.” “Seventeen people? That’s wonderful. How did you do it? “ “I used a diagram, your honor. I drew two circles like this: O o. Then I told them that the big circle is your brain before drugs and the small circle is your brain after drugs.” “That’s admirable,” says the judge. Then he turns to the second guy. “And how did you do?” “Well, your honor, I persuaded 156 people to give up drugs forever.” “Wow!” says the judge. “156 people! How did you manage to do that?” “Well, I used a similar diagram,” the guy says. “I drew two circles like this: o O. Then I pointed to the little circle and said, ‘This is your a**hole before prison.’”

I swear, the other day I bought a packet of peanuts, and on the packet it said "may contain nuts". Well, I should bloody hope so! That's why I bought them! I'd be annoyed if I opened it and an onion fell out.

“Doc, I can’t stop singing The Green, Green Grass Of Home.” He said: “That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome.” “Is it common?” I asked. “It’s not unusual,” he replied.

The other day I went down to my local supermarket and I said: “I want to make a complaint. This vinegar’s got lumps in it”. He said: “Those are pickled onions.”

Kieran Kicks Off http://newsetcblog.wordpress.com/

What am I looking forward to in 2014? 2013 was an interesting year for the sports fan, and 2014 is shaping up to be even better. Having returned to the living world after a particularly slovenly holiday period, I’ve picked out a couple of things I’m particularly looking forward to watching this year. Manchester United In 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager of Manchester United. He was one of the greatest coaches in football history, and left United as league champions for the 20th time and the most successful team in England. He chose Everton boss and fellow Scot David Moyes to take over the position he had occupied for 27 years. So far, Moyes’ first season in charge has been, quite frankly, hilarious. Granted, it hasn’t been as bad as it could have been – thanks to the tight concentration of the table, they are only a couple of wins away from the top four despite sitting in 7th. However, the first half of 2013/14 has already brought

home defeats against West Brom, Everton, Newcastle, Tottenham and Swansea, all of which were the first in decades. They fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup. For many fans, it’s their worst season in living memory, and everyone who doesn’t support them is loving it. 2014 is now a crucial year for Manchester United. This doesn’t have to be a crisis for them yet – the title defence is dead and buried, but the chance is still there to recover their season and bounce back. However, their performances have seemed uninspired and there are holes in their team, most conspicuously at central midfield. They also have an aging problem: key players Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Robin Van Persie are all the wrong side of 30, and Ryan Giggs is now the wrong side of 40 (although at the rate he’s going, he’ll be more likely to die of old age before he retires). If they continue to slide on their current trajectory, 2014 could bring a catastrophic capitulation. The situation is reminiscent of the disastrous fall from grace that Liverpool endured after Kenny Dalglish left in 1991. Having been one of Europe’s elite clubs for the previous 20

years, former player Graham Souness led the Reds to successive 6th place finishes in the league, and the Reds have never quite fully recovered. Speaking of Liverpool, both of the Merseyside teams seem to be enjoying a bit of a resurgence, and 2014 is set to be an exciting year for reds and blues. A Champions League place seems like being Liverpool’s to lose, while Everton are playing the best football we’ve seen from them in years under Roberto Martinez. They have the second best defensive record in the league and are in the mix for the top 4. Meanwhile, United have started 2014 with three defeats in a row. It’s ironic that for the last 10 years of upper mid-table finishes, we had all been praising David Moyes for keeping Everton competitive, when in fact it’s starting to seem as though he may have been the one holding them back. The World Cup Of course, 2014 is a World Cup year. As an England fan, I’ve long since given up any hope of seeing more than a mediocre performance at a tournament from the Three ‘Lions’ (stray cats often seems more appropriate), and with Roy Hodgson in charge and an aging squad, I’m no more optimistic about our chances this year. I figure this way I can only be either correct or pleasantly surprised, as after the debacle of 2010 (the year of Rob ‘butterfingers’ Green and Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal) and the 2012 Euros (The year of ‘Wait a minute we might actually…no, no.’) most rational England fans have given over to apathy. Hell, during the live coverage of England’s snooze-worthy Euro 2012 tie with Italy, Gary Lineker sank to accepting dares from comedian Ricky Gervais on Twitter.

Young emerging stars like Ross Barkley (Everton), Saido Berahino (West Brom), and Raheem Sterling (Liverpool) look promising for England’s future, but this year, I expect little better than at least one hiding at the hands of Italy, Uruguay or Chile in the group, and a limp exit. Speaking of whom, I am however looking forward to seeing Liverpool and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, arguably the best player in the world right now, tear England a new one. I am also anticipating potentially hilarious antics as the man responsible for this:

comes up against Italy striker Mario Balotelli, the fellow troublemaker who did this:

Having just reminded you of why you hate Luis Suarez, let’s talk about Ghana. The Black Stars were quite frankly robbed of a semi-

final spot in 2010, when Suarez’s goal-line handball prevented a certain winning goal. They were the strongest side Africa had sent to a finals in years, and after the star studded Ivory Coast’s limp showing, represented the continent’s best chance of producing a finalist. This year, they’ve drawn a tough group with USA, Portugal and Germany, but I’m excited to see what European stars such as the Ayew brothers, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari can produce. Nigeria have a young team which could surprise a few people. They have drawn Argentina in their group once again, and with the Super Eagles having made Messi and Co work hard last time, that looks like being a tasty game.

Only one team has ever successfully defended the World Cup - Italy in the 1930’s – so in truth it’s a win-win; either we get an exciting, competitive tournament and a new team rises to the mantle, or we get to witness a sporting record that most probably won’t be repeated in our lifetime. Cool Runnings 2 Wait a minute…

Meanwhile Yaya (yaya yaya, yaya yaya, yaya yaya) Toure’s Ivory Coast versus Edinson Cavani’s Uruguay will be a good indicator of how far those large fish can carry their medium sized ponds. The thing that excites me most about this year’s World Cup, or rather the thing I most want to see, is Spain finally getting dethroned. Everyone enjoyed Spain’s brand of passing football when they first stormed to victory at Euro 2008 but having now seen them win three tournaments in a row, I think we’re all a bit bored of it. Perhaps we are taking this Spain team for granted – we are watching one of the greatest teams in history, after all – but it’s no fun when one team has total domination of every tournament. Spain aren’t the same side they were two years ago though: David Villa and Xavi are well into their 30s, Fernando Torres has (for reasons still nobody can really explain) well and truly lost his powers, Iker Casillas has been dropped by Real Madrid. The chance to beat them is there for the taking.

Yes, that’s right, the Jamaican bobsleigh team is back! The team’s underdog story at the1988 Calgary Olympics, which ended in disaster, inspired a hit movie, and it turns out that they have been sending teams to attempt to reach every winter games since, but they haven’t made it due to either failing to qualify or funding problems. Currently ranked 55th in the world, the islanders need to make it into the top 30 by January 20th in order to qualify for this years games in Sochi, Russia, and we might even get a sequel to the beloved Cool Runnings out of it. In fact, screw everything I said before, this is what I’m looking forward to in 2014! Time to get those lucky eggs out people!
