Laban Roomes brings his golden touch for Valentine’s Day

T

his month, Panache is delighted to feature highly-acclaimed entrepreneur and founder of “Goldgenie”, a global gold customization brand, Mr Laban Roomes. There has been much written about the Born and raised East Londoner of Jamaican descent, his story is well documented, inspiring and life affirming. In fact I’m surprised a film has not already been made. I was intrigued by the things I had heard. A successful black UK entrepreneur and philanthropist! Could such an individual possibly exist? We reached the offices of Goldgenie in Pimlico, at about two o’clock on a not unpleasant January afternoon. The expected trauma of finding a parking space did not materialize, instead a serendipitous space with a” parking suspended” notice presented itself. We hoped that the rest of the day would continue in this manner. The offices were spread over two floors: the ground floor and the basement. We were shown to Laban’s personal office in the basement. We introduced ourselves and sat down to talk. Surprisingly, he started the conversation by asking about the magazine

and how we were doing considering the competitive nature of the industry. I told him that we were a lifestyle magazine with a philosophy never to print anything in regards to the BME population that can be seen as demeaning or negative, but to promote the positive contributions and achievements that members of BME population have made and are making to positively impact and shape the society in which we live. This was one of the reasons that we were here to interview him. “There is a preponderance of outlets that highlight negative aspects of black life in UK society”, I said. “We are happy to be the lone voice against the crowd.” I asked him how business was with him and if he enjoyed the life of a successful entrepreneur. He told me that he loved business and had always had the entrepreneurial spirit. In fact he felt that entrepreneurs’ were born to be such, as opposed to being taught. It was either in the blood or it wasn’t. However, looking at black businesses overall, he felt that there was a need for a forum to be set up to look at how we can get businesses in the black community

Cover page feature to work together to make themselves more attractive to the mainstream market. There are many “players” in niche markets who would benefit from collaborations in this way, he felt. I agreed wholeheartedly. I told him that Panache magazine had met and spoken to many black business owners and entrepreneurs. Most were still trying to make it up the ladder and the ones that had “made it”, somehow seemed to disappear up “the ladder of success”. What upsets me most, however, is that it seems that not only do they disappear up the ladder; most pull it up after them. I wondered if Mr. Roomes would be different. He assured me that he had no issues with helping others, if he was able. Changing tact, I enquired about his Valentine’s collection of 24 carat gold plated roses. “Are the roses real?” my partner Jacqui asked. Laban informed her that they were in fact real roses that had been treated, dried and then gone through the plating process. He called for his assistant to bring two samples to show us. Both came in beautiful presentation boxes with certificates of authentication included. We took pictures and complimented him on how lovely they looked. We took pictures with him displaying his products, and with that the interview was over. We shook hands and said our farewells. However, true to his suave persona, Laban asked if it would be OK for him to present one of the roses to Jacqui. I made no objection (I would have had no dinner for a month if I had dared to say no.) and Jacqui received an early Valentine Rose. I came away from the interview with my perception about Mr. Laban Roomes changed somewhat. I had felt that like many successful 10

Valentines

individuals -white or black- he would distance himself from the issues affecting the hoi polloi. He is indeed a successful black UK entrepreneur and philanthropist! However, I got to understand that he is also a man with a background and history not dissimilar to the majority of us; he had a difficult childhood but did not let his circumstances define him. Whether it is the entrepreneurial spirit that drove him or just a simple wish to better himself, he has excelled, but remains connected and empathetic to his “roots”.

An eternal rose - the perfect Valentine's gift from any gentleman A single rose as a symbol of love, peace, and beauty, has long been seen as the most thoughtful Valentine’s gift for that special person in your life. It was one of the first flowers on Earth, and fossils have been found dating back over 35 million years. Sadly, however, that gloriously fresh and delicate bloom will wither in time, and become no more than a memory. As a superb alternative, our Goldgenie eternal roses are perfectly preserved in 24ct gold, platinum and resin, and will prove an unending expression of your love. After an individual bloom is carefully chosen and harvested, we spend around four weeks ensuring that the tiniest detail of each petal and leaf is captured and preserved. You can make a careful choice from our selection of gold, platinum, red, white, purple or pink blooms - each gloriously created to last for all time by a truly skilled and experienced team of craftsmen. Our gold and platinum roses can also be presented in a stylish and elegant black piano finish box. As well as an individual rose, we can even create an unforgettable bouquet of your own choice. Of course, each Goldgenie rose is covered by a lifetime guarantee. It can be delivered within just 48 hours in a giftwrapped window box and has its own certificate of authenticity. Order your Goldgenie eternal Valentine's rose now and imagine how it will match the sparkle in your partner's eyes when they first see this amazing gift!

Five Ideas to Capture the Essence of By Kate Clancy

I

t has become a challenge for every holiday: how to honor its intent, not the commercial qualities. This is especially true for Valentine's Day. How did Valentine's Day come to mean the most romantic holiday? Well, St. Valentine's Day began as a celebration of one or several early Christian saints. There are a number of stories about martyred saints with this name. But the holiday first became associated with romantic love around the 12th century when it was connected with courtly love. Geoffrey Chaucer, the English poet, popularized the holiday with his poetry about "valentines" in the 14th century. The holiday continued to evolve until, in the 15th century, lovers commemorated the day by giving one another "valentine" cards and flowers or candy. Eventually, printers began creating "Valentines" expressing affection creatively for people to give to one another and in later years, to mail to one another. The style of Valentine cards varied over time, ranging from tintypes to lace trimmed paper to decorative wreaths. What can you do to acknowledge Valentine's Day and demonstrate your affection for your beloved? Here are some gift ideas that involve

more than ordering red roses from the florist (although that is a wonderful start to the celebration): 1. Make it an occasion for the two of you. Prepare a special Valentine's dessert. If your Valentine is a lover of chocolate, make a mini-chocolate cake: one for each of you. Maybe one with a molten chocolate center would make it a truly special event! Or just make a fancy version of your beloved's favorite dessert. 2. Locate a good photo of the two of you and place it in a very special frame. You can make one (construction paper and lace trimmings) or purchase one. Give it to him or her with a poem you wrote yourself. 3. Build a Valentine box by locating an antique wood box or small metal one. Spruce it up with glitter or rhinestones or ribbon. Or even, if it is wood, take the time to refinish it into bright, satiny wood. Inside, place a special gift. Perhaps a gift card or "IOU" for some activity you can do together. After the gift is used, your Valentine can use the box for other items. But the memory will linger for years.

4. Using heavy-stock paper, cut out hearts and fold them over. Inside, place different messages of love. You can even use this gift to make it "Valentine's Week" by placing heart messages around the house for him/ her to find. Alternatively, you can include photos from times you have spent together and put those in the hearts that you scatter around the bedroom or places your Valentine relaxes. 5. Plan a romantic evening. Make reservations at a romantic or favorite restaurant. After dinner, place candles around the living room or bedroom to set the mood - or continue it. Perhaps place a bottle of wine nearby to toast another year of love. Rent a romantic couples' movie and watch it together. Or play soft, romantic music to enhance the mood. Remember, this is your time to appreciate one another and the feelings of love you share. Perhaps you can conclude the evening with a sensual massage. In the busy life that is typical of modern society, we rarely make the time to focus on one person. Make this Valentine’s Day a special one by giving the gift of time and you to your beloved. Kate Clancy is one of Two Smart Chicks who take advantage of their pleasure in celebrating the holidays to research all aspects of those special occasions. Kate and her colleague Lyn Smith wish you the very best for all your holidays and hope you will visit them at: http://www.giftsforalltheholidays.com Article: http://EzineArticles.com/7483621

A Valentine’s Dream

oday I’ve celebrated my 50 something… birthday. There I’ve said it. It’s out of the bag.Up in the air, in cyber space for ever. I’ve finally owned up to my age (almost) and I’ll tell you why. I have decided that I want to get married! Don’t miss-understand me, I have always wanted to get married but even though I’ve had some long term spells in relationships, the opportunity of marriage, that final commitment. That announcement. That loud statement to the rest of the world that someone loves me enough to take that step and my love is equally as strong and to allow myself to walk the aisle, in the “white dress”, has always evaded me, mainly because: surprisingly, I’ve never felt ready to tie the knot, so to speak. I’ve never felt old enough to make that sort of commitment. Then one day you wake up and you’re “nearly OLD!!!!” The question is, why are some people able to take to marriage and family like a fish to water and some people see it as the impending onset of doom, old age and endless sorting of dirty socks? There is this nagging feeling in

the back of my mind that someday, I will need to grow up and find a nice man who will want to settle down with me, but at my age? Settle down? For how long? I know that in real time, I am far too old to be,“settling down to start a family and growing old together sort of thing,” but in my Peter Pan thinking,”I’m still a student. I may be studying for a very worthwhile career but I’m still in student mode and ironically, still looking for Mr Right, but with the “later” nonsense still going on in my head. With Valentine day approaching, I have a silent wish that this “Mr Right” would turn up with a bunch of red roses, book a table for two in a nice restaurant on the river somewhere, where we would spend the evening smooching to Frank Sinatra and planning a wonderful future, whilst lusting into each other’s eyes. Then my red high heels would take me down a winding staircase and whilst he held my hand, our carriage would arrive to whisk us off to a life of ‘coupledom’. This evening, I arrive home, wearing my red high heels by the way (never grown out of those), having been out for a lovely dinner with all my single “never found Mr or Ms Right” friends, with no prince charming holding my hand and no carriage in sight.

In My Opinion Instead, I drive home alone in my BMW, with no cupid sitting on my shoulder, because he’s eluded me yet again, or Have I eluded him?..... In any case, how sad is that? So now I’m hoping that in my 50....something year, I may just grow up enough to accept that having a nice guy around, could be fun and

that this eternal bachelorette, commitment phobic way of life may need to come to an end. Finally? So if anyone is looking for a date on Valentine, carriage and ‘coupledom’ stuff? Let me know. More love to you all.

Black, single and looking to mingle? New dating site Dates 4 Us aims to help black and mixed race singles find love.

W

E all know the old saying: love comes when you least expect it. But for many keen to find a new partner, a more proactive approach is preferable. And what better time to take control of your love life than in the new year? Looking for love on dating websites has become a growing trend amongst singles of all ages, and Dates 4 Us is the latest company to become part of this phenomenon. But as the name would suggest, this is a company with a difference, as it’s ‘for us’ – namely black and mixed race singles looking for love. “Dates 4 Us enables black and mixed race singles to look for love and not have to feel coy or apologetic for wanting to seek a partner with the same or similar cultural interests,” says company founder Leon James. “In a society that prides itself on multiculturalism, there is a danger that some

might feel uncomfortable about admitting they’d like to settle down with someone of their own race. Dates 4 Us eliminates that issue by providing a service for those who are specific in their desire to find a partner of the same race. “That said, we know that it’s not just black people who have a desire to date black people! Many non-black men and women have an attraction to black people, and those people are equally welcome to look for love or friendship on Dates 4 Us.” James explains that he decided to launch the company following conversations he had with friends who are black and single. “After speaking to several of my single friends, I began to notice a trend, namely they all said they were unsure of how or where to find a decent partner,” says the 31-year-old. “All in their late 20s and 30s, they’d long finished college/university, they’d exhausted the nightclub scene in their earlier years, none of them worked with anybody with dating potential, and those that go to church would see the same faces every Sunday. “With these conventional means of finding a partner out the window, it left them pretty

Love & Relationships

stumped on how they’d go about finding love. “The other common denominator with all of them was that they shared the desire to settle down with a partner of their own race. Obviously, we’re a diverse community with varied interests, so I came up with the idea of creating a site that would serve as a hub for black and mixed race singles who are looking for love.” Described as “fun, free and professional,” Dates 4 Us, which is free to join, has two avenues: one for younger singletons, and the other for over-50s. “There’s certainly a need for a site where the more mature black and mixed race professionals can seek a partner. “I know this having been cornered by a couple of my older single relatives,” laughs London-born James, who is of Jamaican and Montserratian heritage. “They insisted that the site should have an avenue for more mature singles, and it made sense. After all, there’s no age limit when it comes to finding love.” With over a decade of experience marketing products targeted at the black community, James says the key to Dates 4 Us is the fact that the company knows its market. “Over the last 13 years, I’ve worked on several successful projects that were predominately targeted towards the black British community. “Myself and my team have a track record of being able to connect with black Britons from all walks of life, and as such, we’re confident we’ll be able to successfully connect with our target audience. He adds: “There are other dating sites that seek to serve black singles looking for love but most of them are subsidiaries of larger companies, and as a result, the ‘black branch’ of the company tree isn’t really a huge priority. With Dates 4 Us, finding love for black and mixed race singles is our priority.” For more information and to join for free, visit: • www.dates4us.com • https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dates4us/610810328957 125?fref=ts 26

For me, my favourite memory of Audrey Scott is going to a Prostate Cancer Fundraiser and hearing her sing, “If You Knew (how much I love you)” . I was transported back to when I was a little girl watching my Dad dance to reggae songs on a Sunday evening. My interest in Miss Scott grew from then. I admired the way she conducted herself, always humble and down to earth. When I listen to her sing, I feel that I can sense where Miss Scott is coming from. I now label myself one of her biggest fans. Therefore, it is no surprise that in my new role as entertainment correspondent, I would seek to interview Miss Scott at some point. To this end, I courted her on Facebook, making her laugh and giving her warning that she was on my “hit list”. She said she was ready when I was. Therefore, with this being our Valentine Issue, I decided that an interview with Miss Scott would be perfect for my column. As I sat opposite her and observed her up close, I found it hard to believe that Miss Scott began singing in choirs at the age of 12, recording her first single at the age

of 17. Before me was a vibrant, high energy lady, with humorous and enthusiastic conversation. We were soon chatting away like two old friends catching up. I asked her it had been a smooth transition from singing in the choir to singing Lovers Rock. “Not really.... back then we didn’t even know that we were singing Lovers Rock, we didn’t realise they had a name for it. As far as we were concerned we were writing and singing to reggae music. We were young and just enjoying being able to sing. I even remember one of our singers coming to rehearsals in her school uniform. Unfortunately being so young also meant that financially we didn’t get all that was due to us.” The Sadonians split up not too long after the recording of those few early songs. “No one even got to see us sing live” reflects Miss Scott. After the band broke up Miss Scott took time off to have her family. However, it was only a matter of time before she returned to her passion. She recalled the moment she realised that her talent was not only acknowledged but appreciated. “My younger sister contacted me and told me that someone called Sir Lloyd was looking for me. I was asked to participate in a Mother’s Day event in Catford. I was

nervous; I would be appearing with my peers; I had never met them before. I planned to sing – among my repertoire – a couple of songs in tribute to Caroll Thompson. When I began the first few bars of “Goodbye My Love”, the audience erupted! I thought the roof was going to come off! I couldn’t believe it! It was then it dawned on me that I had a following and people really appreciated my singing”.

a who’s who in the reggae fraternity, Miss Scott still calls herself a “New kid on the block” and counts it a privilege and a honour to be singing amongst her peers.

Moments like those helped to bolster Miss Scott’s confidence in her talent, encouraging her to continue to this day. I asked her about her last song “I’m Alive (I’m A Survivor)”, what was the inspiration for that song?

“Believe in love! I am still searching for my King. I don’t hate men, I love my men! I have sons. Speak out what you want to the Universe. Don’t concentrate on what you don’t want, concentrate on what you want. Make your list. Love is not just for Valentine’s Day. God is love and because we are Gods we exude love. I am a Goddess!”

“That song came from me, from what I have been through. If you listen to the words, you will know and hear where I am coming from. I keep saying, I am not a writer, but Starky Banton who produced the song, disagrees. At the time he asked me what I wanted to write about. I said I wanted to write and sing about how I felt. For years I didn’t sing because of how I felt, but now I am speaking out girlfriend! I am enjoying myself.” Not only is she is enjoying herself but she has taken steps to take her singing to another level.

In closing, I inform Miss Scott that this is our Valentine issue and ask her what she would like to say to her followers/fan base, for those of us who will read this article, on the subject of love.

I parted from Miss Scott with a smile on my face, feeling energised and inspired on a cold January evening. It was only when I saw others smiling at me on the way home that I realised I had been humming quite loudly the chorus to “I’m Alive (I’m a survivor)”. Miss Scott I salute you...

“I now have someone looking after my singing career. I plan to expand my singing style. I would love to do styles like Motown, Jazz, even Pop. When I was young I remember stars like Mark Bolan. I would love to do something in the style of Julie Andrews as I love drama.” Incredibly, despite singing for so many years and even though the people she has appeared and collaborated with reads like 38

Body Fitness Tips by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

A pain.

re you feeling flabby after too much festive cheer? Don’t despair - slimming gain needn’t mean

Making tiny tweaks to your daily routine can make a huge difference to your waistline. If you lose two pounds a week for the next seven weeks, you could lose a stone a good start to your Valentine’s.

A

Swap white bread for wholemeal: The calorie count is the same, but white bread has much less fibre so you’ll feel hungrier much more quickly.

B

Lose the top of your sandwich: The sandwich has become the ubiquitous lunch on the go. But use just one slice of bread instead of two... and instead fill out with a small bag of green salad leaves with healthy dressing. The result is a 100 calorie saving and a boost of essential nutrients to fuel weight loss.

40

FEBRUARY 2014

/

C

Cut the bacon: If nothing but a bacon sandwich will do on a Sunday morning, swap streaky bacon for lean back bacon with the fatty rind cut off and you’ll save yourself 250 calories. Grill rather than fry for extra calorie savings.

D

Tweet what you eat: It’s the new way to keep a food diary. If you have to note it down, chances are you’ll pay more attention to the quantity and quality of what you eat.

E

Ditch the side orders: If you are having a curry, swap the side order of naan bread, which can contain a whopping 400 calories, for a chapati which comes in at just 120 calories and is virtually fat-free.

F

Swap creme fraiche for fromage frais: Crème fraiche has 170 calories and 18g of fat per tablespoon. Fromage frais has only 22 calories per tablespoon and is virtually fat-free.

Alphabet way to lose weight G

Don’t skip breakfast: Research shows us time and time again that skipping breakfast can lead to weight gain, not weight loss. You are more likely to crave quick sugars such as cakes, muffins and buttery toast if you skip breakfast.

J

Cut out sugar in your tea: Five cups of sugary tea can add up to almost 500 empty calories, not to mention the biscuits you dunk alongside. Try to break the sweet habit altogether rather than swap for sweeteners, since researchers now believe sweeteners may make the body crave extra food.

H

K

Stay hydrated: Being thirsty can often be mistaken for feeling hungry. Sipping water between meals is ideal. Around 1.5 to two litres a day is a minimum for an averagesized person.

Take it cheesy: Cheese is very high in calories so use only as a topping. Think shavings of parmesan on a healthy salad rather than macaroni cheese.

I

L

Cut down on alcohol: If you’re out for the night but want to stay healthy then order tonic with cordial, or an alcohol-free grape juice as a tasty, guilt-free drink. Alcohol-free beers are becoming increasingly popular and are available in most bars. Some have as little as 24 calories per 100ml

Eat fruit, don’t drink it: A small 200ml glass of orange juice counts as one of your five daily fruit and vegetables, but it has 100 calories. A few glasses really adds up but won’t fill you. You’re better off eating the fruit.

the pounds, especially when you’re pouring home measures. Swap a 250ml glass for a 125ml serving with sparkling water in a spritzer and save almost 200 calories and two units of alcohol.

N

Stick to dark chocolate: If you need some chocolate (which is simply the case sometimes!) then stick to dark as most people need less of it to feel satisfied and it is only 60 calories for two squares compared with 265 calories for an average milk chocolate bar. Hot chocolate is no better either. A large serving topped off with cream could come in at an eye-watering 500 calories.

O

Watch your smoothies: Be careful with shopbought smoothies which can contain around 300 calories per serving. Use them as a meal, not a drink. Even better, make your own with skimmed milk, berries and half a banana to halve the calories.

P

Eat eggs in the morning: They trigger a hormone that suppresses hunger pangs in the brain and you’ll eat less for the rest of the day.

Q

Get your oats: Swap refined cereals in a box for a bag of porridge oats. Eating bulky and higher fibre foods increases the volume of food without adding calories, so you feel fuller for longer.

42

FEBRUARY 2014

/

R

Don’t despair: You might be disheartened when the running or step machine tells you you’ve burnt 87 calories when you’ve been sweating for at least 15 minutes. After all, it doesn’t even add up to a skinny cappuccino. But you burn fat even after exercise because you use carbohydrate fuel during the exercise which takes time to replace.

S

Take the stairs, not the lift: If you take the stairs, or get off the bus one stop early and are generally more active without actually working out, you could burn around an extra 250 calories a day. If you don’t eat more to compensate for the extra movement, you could lose at least a stone in 12 months with this alone.

T

Eat more meals: Eat five mini-meals rather than three larger meals a day - and never skip meals. If you go too long without food your body will try to conserve more fat from what you eat.

U

Watch the coffee: Black coffee contains only about 10 calories but a milky coffee can contain anything from 100 calories for a small cappuccino to 350 calories plus for “grande” with all the trimmings. Don’t be afraid to ask for half the milk - spell it out: “Don’t fill up the cup.” I do it all the time and the best Baristas get it right first time!

V

Eat slowly: When you eat, eat slowly and chew thoroughly - it can take up to 20 minutes for the brain to register that your stomach is full. So, put simply, eating more slowly can make you feel fuller with less food. Chewing well also helps to prevent digestive complaints so you’ll beat the bloat too.

W

Sleep more: If you are tired you are far more likely to prop up energy with sugary snacks.

X

Know your onions: An onion a day boosts the function of your liver - which is your main fat-burningorgan.

Y

Don’t be tempted: Polishing off the food on kids’ plates is a fasttrack to weight gain. Have a large bottle of washing liquid handy to squeeze over the plates when you clear up so you won’t be tempted!

Z

Be disciplined in all you do and these tips will work for you, always consult your doctor when doing any type of dieting.

Ardyss has taken the best of the different manufacturing and fashion trends since the origins or the Body, in order to achieve the balance between the comfortable 80’s spandex Bodies and the structure and effectiveness of the original Corsets, creating a luxury reshaping garment: Body Magic. More than a body shaper. A UNIQUE DESIGN Ardyss Body Magic was developed to exercise pressure in the abdominal area, which generates a protective impulse that helps prevent fat accumulation in the front, back and lateral abdominal walls. When properly in place, it reshapes your figure from the bust line (lifting it) down to the crotch, helping eliminate stored fat. It also relocates flaccid tissue; slims the hips and contours the buttocks. At the same time, the Body’s structure corrects the posture and slims the torso with its abdomen control feature, instantly reducing up to 3 sizes.

BODY MAGIC RESHAPES YOUR BODY • It won’t only make you look slimmer, but it will reshape your body in a balanced, feminine way. Also, garments for men can reduce the waistline up to 3 belt sizes, instantly. In addition, it helps control proper posture as it protects the spine and the union of the femur to the pelvis. • Ideal for ridding the body of excess weight • Body Magic was designed originally to help overweight individuals regain their original contour, reshaping it while they drop sizes. • Spectacular look • Size reduction along with the reshaping of your lower body and a proper posture will make you look and feel spectacular. HOW LIPOTRANSPORTATION WORKS WITH BODY MAGIC Reshaping as a result of the use of Ardyss garments can be compared to lipo-sculpture without surgery. It takes place through the unique lipotransportation process. Lipotransportation, as its name implies, is the re-distribution of adipose (fatty) tissue. These cells can simply be conveyed towards areas where they are needed, for example, the breasts and buttocks or, in case of an excess of body fat, towards the center of the abdomen where, thanks to the pressure exercised by Ardyss reshaping garments, their elimination is promoted through the lymphatic system. Body Magic is a compression garment. DR.LEONEL KELLY – ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON Fat is 90% water. Body Magic compresses your fat cells and helps your lymphatic system eliminate the fat through three channels: sweat, urine and bowels. And that’s how you lose the excess fat. And since 46

FEBRUARY 2014

/

fat is predominantly water, like water, it takes on the shape of whatever “container” it’s in… i.e., the Body Magic. So what happens is, as a person wears the garment on a regular basis, their body starts to take on the form that it is in when they have on the Body Magic (which is why it’s called a reshaping garment). Example: If you’ve ever worn a ring or a bracelet for a length of time, you’ll notice that where you had it on, your finger or wrist (depending on how tight the bracelet is/was), takes on the shape of the jewelry. The rest of your body is no different. It’s how Africans elongated their necks (stacking huge rings around their necks over time), how Aborigines stretch their earlobes and lips (by sticking huge disks in them). After taking before and after x-rays of a woman wearing the Body Magic, I have seen first hand the change that it can make to the body. As a doctor of chiropractic, I am very concerned with spinal alignment and the stress that is placed on the spine on a daily basis. The Body Magic provided structural support to the lower back, placing it in a more anatomically neutral position. I would recommend this product to those who are getting spinal correction and need extra support throughout the their day to help alleviate the stress on their lower back. Nothing can replace a chiropractic adjustment to correct spinal misalignments, but the Body Magic helps place the lower back in a better position to deal with day-to-day stress. - Dr. Angela Tharnish, D.C.

Body Magic Helps prevent sagging buttocks It positions the gluteus muscles in their anatomical place to promote their proper functioning and this way prevents them from sagging. ADDITIONAL BENEFITS FOR HEALTH FROM THE BODY MAGIC • Body Magic Firms tissue • Back, abdomen, buttocks and thighs are firmed by the pressure exercised by the garment and fat is re-distributed. • Body Magic Controls posture • This garment not only helps maintain proper posture but it also controls it directly, helping you achieve a more erect posture. • Body Magic Improves organ functioning • All internal organs located in the abdominal cavity improve noticeably their regular functioning since they regain lost pressure. • Body Magic Helps speed recovery from surgery • In the case of liposuction, it is ideal since it holds tissue in place, preventing abrupt movements and promoting recovery. • Magicbodysuit.com is the ultimate place for reshaping and compression garments for men and women. Argan Oil

T

Argan Tree he Argan tree has adapted well to the harsh hot conditions experienced in Morocco. The tree is in the genus Argania, which is now an endangered species despite once covering most parts of North Africa. The tree has deep roots that are great in protecting it from the hot climate as well as soil erosion. The growing of the tree is minimal and quite specific, which is why the Argan oils remain rare and highly valued around the world. Tradition Prior to modern technologies used today, the Berbers of Morocco used to collect Argan pits that were found in goat waste after the goats ate the fruits from the trees and failed to digest them. They would then press the pits to extract the oil which would then be used in cosmetics and in cooking. It is however sad that the tradition has been largely replaced and most oils available are pressed by machine thus loosing important values. Hand made Argan oil has its benefits and enables the extraction of all important nutrients and components of the oil. There are still high quality hand made Argan oils that are available in the market and are highly recommended. http://ivoryandolive.com/wp-content/ uploads/2012/07/tree-dwelling-goats.jpg Extraction The methods used in the extraction of Argan oil are crucial in the production of the oil. The Argan fruits are first harvested and then dried to remove the fleshy pulp of the fruit. The flesh provides great animal feeds. The next stage involves the cracking of the nut

50

to get the Argan kernels. This is one of the processes that have not yet been mechanized and thus the old traditional means are still in use. Kernels used in making cooking oil, or culinary oil are then roasted. After the roasting and the kernels have cooled down, they are the ground using the traditional means for optimum oil extraction. The process takes dozens of hours and 100 kg of Argan fruits produce about one liter of pure Argan oil. Argan oil geared towards cosmetic use is mostly unroasted Argan oil. This means that after the almonds have been extracted from the nuts, they are not roasted instead, they are just ground. This is in most cases to avoid the excessive nutty scent that comes from the roasting of the kernels. After the grinding and the extraction, the oil is left still for a period of about 2 weeks. This assists in settling of any solids at the bottom of the containers. The oil is then purified through filtering depending on the clarity required. Some natural Argan oils may contain low amounts of sediments but they do not in any way affect the quality of the oil. Culinary Argan Oil Cooking Argan oils are mostly used in salads, couscous, dipping bread among many other uses and have a nutty scent from the roasting of the kernels. The grinding of roasted almond and Argan oil with stones produce Amlou, which is a peanut butter like paste that is used in bread dipping when mixed with honey. The consumption of Argan oils has been linked to prevention of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancers.

Health

Argan oils are rich in vitamin E and lower harmful triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood and thus more preferred to regular animal fats. Cosmetic Argan Oils Unroasted Argan oils are used in the treatment of skin related ailments as well as cosmetic products for the hair. Argan oil is recommended in the treatment of dryness, skin flaking, juvenile acne and can be used in hair nourishing. The oil can also be used in healing burns as well as fighting rheumatism. Even though the oil has been in use for many years, it became more popular in other countries the last decade. The oils have been used in the making of different products aimed at improving the skin and strengthening different hair types. Its high

contents in vitamins and antioxidants are the reason why it is used in making conditioner and shampoos that are geared towards repairing damaged hair and skin as a result of the sun, hair care tools, hair treatments and coloring. Is important to choose hand made Argan oil which has passed through the traditional methods of extraction using traditional tools. This is because the oils will retain all the essential components that are lost in mechanical processes. This Argan Oil is available at: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI. dll?ViewItem&item=321296984743

CUSTOMERS COMMENTS Moroccan Argon oil it's absolutely amazing, I use it every two days because my scalp gets dry, it relieves the scalp, smells lovely, my hair looks healthy, shiny and full of body. It is not too greasy like other Argan oils I have used in the past; the bottle is easy to use with spray function that worked very well with my braids. It's a 5star product absolutely adore it

You can also take advantage of the many businesses exhibiting their products and services. Shoes, fashion designs, accessories, books and many other items will be available to be purchased throughout the evening.

“We have to recognise and reward ourselves before we can expect other people to do so!” said show producer, Reuben P. Joseph. “I have always recognised that main stream productions fail to prominently feature Black and Asian models and I feel that the industry needs to take huge step to redress the imbalance. Supermodel Naomi Campbell has teamed up with beauty icon Iman and former model-turned-advocate Bethann Hardison to form an advocacy group called “Diversity Coalition” which is taking an unprecedented step to highlight the lack of models of colour on the runway and I 100% back them.” Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

ho am I really? Who is the person, company, body behind such: fresh, new, life giving, richly cool breath of air in clay vessels? It is about my heart and the passion I have for the earth. My idea of trying to contribute to nature by transforming the earth into something luxurious and befitting: using my skill to capture dust, mould clay and create vases which can be used in a variety of settings.

the poem, if you can read between the lines, you just read a part of my poem. Truly Africa is rich in values, moral, cultures, traditions, mineral resources, oxides, clay qualities and many new and expensive raw materials which help to increase the African values. The earth produces, I fashion it, you buy, learn, study from what I do, you see, I also teach, mentor, inspire etc.

I believe that now is the time to show, sell, exhibit, educate, release, impress, excite and influence all generations from the kids right through to the older generation (who really still feel young). Clay is my primary material, my fingers are my number one tool, amongst others used to express the higher and deeper dimensions I go to, to create texture, culture , beauty, traditional African marks, contemporary new infused with layers, marks, woven, layered. Director Steve McQueen’s film “Twelve Years a Slave” is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life. Star-Ledger film critic Stephen Whitty gave the film four-out-of-four stars, calling it "fascinating" and "horrifying. The critically acclaimed film earned seven nominations, including best director (McQueen), best film actor in a drama (Ejiofor), and best supporting actress (Lupita Nyong'o). Steve McQueen has now set his sights on developing a BBC drama billed as "epic in scope", about the experiences of the black community in west London from the late 1960s to the present. We’re looking forward to this. http://www.12yearsaslave.com Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Context is a Mother

R

ecently a Facebook friend tagged me in this picture saying: “Now I’m saying to the younger generation “BACK IN MY DAY” lol. We are slap bang in a time when things are being redefined before our eyes! Exciting right? However it made me wonder how many businesses are responding to these changes and whether their offering is within today’s ‘context’. By definition a ‘phone’ according to Google is: a system for transmitting voices over a distance using wire or radio, by converting acoustic vibrations to electrical signals.

BUT… There is a barrage of stats from all over the web, which tell us that the ‘phone call’ is not what people do mostly on their ‘phones’. I think we all know this, so what’s my point. Within a modern context, a ‘phone’ means something we can use to access information (emails, web, contacts, data) or use as a tool (photos, torch, clock, compass) not to mention the millions of possibilities presented to us from apps. It’s ALL about CONTEXT. ...But context doesn’t wait for you or your business to ‘catch up’ it just ‘is’. And if you’re not ‘with it’ then context can be a MOTHER F$%#3R. Just ask the 1,000’s of businesses that either never take off or end up on the SME scrap heap. Someone contacted me a few days ago with an idea they had to start a new business. They continued to articulate the business model as well as they could until I realised that what they were talking about, relative to the sector they wanted to go into was an ‘old phone’. It’s almost as if they were saying that they

wanted to offer people another way to connect to the internet, but it would mean they’d have to ‘dial up’ each time. Initially I was stunned and couldn’t believe that they didn’t get the context from within which people operate today. But I realised something; there are ‘levels to this’ and context exists in ways that are subtler than we are used to. Let me give you an example.....If someone was transported from, let’s say 15 years ago and you showed them a video on Vine or a Tweet for example, they would assume you were showing them a clip or excerpt from a longer piece of content. Not realising that clip or Tweet IS the entire piece of content. Whereas, we, in a modern context understand that the overall proposition of media lead content has changed. And a 7 second video or 140 character piece of content is ‘normal’.

1. Is the business you’re doing or would like to do in ‘context’ with today’s market? 2. Did you come up with the answer to question 1) or did you ask an expert J ? Context can be a MOTHER F$%#3R but it can also be the Mother which births new ideas and ways of doing things. These created by entrepreneurs and new businesses that understand its context. It’s the reason why people didn’t ‘get’ Twitter, or can’t understand why the kids are on Snapchat or Instagram, or why Bing won’t eclipse Google and why Yahoo! are struggling to define themselves. The younger generation out there will be familiar with the term ‘LEVELS’ and for those not familiar, it really describes you, or your businesses ability to advance within it’s market and stay ahead of the game.

The difference in how that content is perceived is quite subtle yet fundamental to today’s business models and consumer propositions.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Angela Maria DiFranco, American singer, guitarist, multiinstrumentalist, poet and songwriter who said:

So what does this mean for you? Well ask yourself the following questions:

“Taken out of context I must seem so strange”

n September 1939, like some 800,000 other children during World War II, our mother was evacuated out of London and away from the Blitz. Dispatched by steam train and delivered unceremoniously to a distant family member in a small rural hamlet in Kent, South East England she attempted to blend into country life, while our grandmother stayed behind to take up a full time position at Fortnum and Mason in London’s Piccadilly.

During her time there, our grandmother would regularly serve dignitaries and aristocrats, most memorably The Princess Elizabeth (our current Queen) a story which would be recounted relentlessly throughout her lifetime at all and any social gathering large or small, and along with our grandfather she went on to develop not only a delectable palette, but an insatiable taste for finery. mountain on their heads. And yes, they even wore those striking striped bodysuits.

E

very sports fan loves a plucky underdog. There’s something about a little guy, an amateur, taking on a dominant force of professionals and holding their own that stirs up all of our own ambitions. We can relate to an amateur. That’s why everyone loves Cool Runnings; the classic story of four island boys who had never seen snow going to the Calgary Olympics and actually threatening to do well is one of the most popular sports movies of the last 20 years. Phrases like ‘Cool Runnins mon’, ‘Kiss me lucky egg’, ‘Sanka, ya dead?’ and of course “Feel the rhthym, feel the rhyme!” are ubiquitously associated with Jamaica for practically everyone under 30. So it’s a shame that lots of people my age and younger, that I’ve encountered at least, don’t even realise that it’s based on a true story. Sure, the four characters from the film are fictional and played by American actors, but a group of Jamaicans really did go to Calgary in 1988, they really did set some impressive times, and they really did flip over and travel halfway down a

Jamaican Bobsleigh Team Debut At Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics

They made a lasting impression on the winter Olympics – 1988 was the first winter Olympiad to include several tropical nations such as Costa Rica, The Philippines, and Fiji. Jamaica’s respectable performance and the popularity they earned helped lend credibility to the idea of hot countries competing in winter sports, and new countries such as Ghana have continued to debut every four years. The bobsled team themselves returned to the Olympics throughout the 90’s, and a member of the 2002 contingent, Lascelles Brown, went on to win silver and bronze medals for Canada in 2006 and 2010. In 2010, Devon Brown, the brakeman from the original team, reminisced on the aftermath of 1988 with the BBC.

Winter Olympics

"As we were walking down the braking stretch, [after the crash] feeling rather sorry for ourselves and embarrassed, I remember the crowd just started to cheer."

But when he lost his job in 2012, he saw an opportunity to revive his love for bobsleigh. As he explained to Canada.com, “I was hungry and I was angry.”

"One guy reached over to shake my hand. Everybody else after that started to shake my hand."

At 44, and with no sponsors, Watt revived the Cool Runnings dream out of his own pocket. By his own confession, he barely gets by financially. He flew people over from Jamaica to compete in four-man tournaments across North America, but as injuries and money problems hit, they had to settle for the twoman again, and it was in that category that Watt and brakeman Marvin Dixon made the grade to qualify for Sochi a few weeks ago.

"We thought we'd be ridiculed and chased out of town, it couldn't have been further from the truth. We got home and people were just very proud of us.” 2002 was the last time the Jamaicans made it to the Winter Olympics, and since then the team has pretty much gone away. It had been shrinking for a while from a four-man team competing in the two-man competition, and half of the twosome, Lascelles Brown, went off to find success in Canada. The team didn’t manage to qualify for 2006, funding was cut off, and it appeared the story of the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team was over, and the dream was dead. 12 years on, it is back, and in fact while the media headlines their qualification for Sochi 2014 as “Cool Runnings: 2”, the story of how the dream stayed alive already sounds more like a movie plot than real life. Winston Watt was a member of the 1994, 1998 and 2002 teams, setting an Olympic record two-man push-start time with Lascelles Brown in the latter. He retired in 2006 and moved to New York with his childhood girlfriend, but when they broke up, he moved back to the small town of Evanston, where the team had set up camp for the Salt Lake City games in 2002. He worked on the Wyoming oilfields for years, met a new girl and had a son. 94

FEBRUARY 2014

/

But still without any sponsors or backing from the Jamaican Olympic Committee, the team were facing the real possibility of missing out simply because they couldn’t afford to go to Russia. That’s where the truly heart warming part of this story begins. When news broke of the team’s predicament in early January, the Internet jumped into action. Watt reckoned they would need around US$40,000 to make the trip – a completely unofficial online crowd funding campaign raised $30,000 within two days, and a separate campaign on Crowdtilt. com has currently raised over $80,000. The world may have thought the Jamaican bobsleigh team was dead, but its love for them was clearly still alive and kicking. As a real life sports underdog story, it’s not going to get much better than Winston Watt and Marvin Dixon in Sochi this month. Hollywood doesn’t often have good ideas, so don’t hold your breath for an announcement of ‘Cool Runnings 2’, but who cares if it doesn’t happen – the true story is already better than anything Disney could write about lucky eggs.

Adam was walking around the Garden of Eden feeling very lonely, so God asked Adam, "What's wrong with you?" Adam said he didn't have anyone to talk to. God said he was going to give him a companion and it would be a woman. He said, "This person will cook for you and wash your clothes. She will always agree with every decision you make. She will bear you children and never ask you to get up in the night to take care of them. She will not nag, and will be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement. She will never have a headache, and will freely give you love and compassion whenever needed." Adam asked God, "What will a woman like this cost?" God said, "An arm and a leg." Adam said, "What can I get for just a rib?" The rest is history.
