T
his month, Panache is delighted to feature highly-acclaimed entrepreneur and founder of “Goldgenie”, a global gold customization brand, Mr Laban Roomes. There has been much written about the Born and raised East Londoner of Jamaican descent, his story is well documented, inspiring and life affirming. In fact I’m surprised a film has not already been made. I was intrigued by the things I had heard. A successful black UK entrepreneur and philanthropist! Could such an individual possibly exist? We reached the offices of Goldgenie in Pimlico, at about two o’clock on a not unpleasant January afternoon. The expected trauma of finding a parking space did not materialize, instead a serendipitous space with a” parking suspended” notice presented itself. We hoped that the rest of the day would continue in this manner. The offices were spread over two floors: the ground floor and the basement. We were shown to Laban’s personal office in the basement. We introduced ourselves and sat down to talk. Surprisingly, he started the conversation by asking about the magazine
and how we were doing considering the competitive nature of the industry. I told him that we were a lifestyle magazine with a philosophy never to print anything in regards to the BME population that can be seen as demeaning or negative, but to promote the positive contributions and achievements that members of BME population have made and are making to positively impact and shape the society in which we live. This was one of the reasons that we were here to interview him. “There is a preponderance of outlets that highlight negative aspects of black life in UK society”, I said. “We are happy to be the lone voice against the crowd.” I asked him how business was with him and if he enjoyed the life of a successful entrepreneur. He told me that he loved business and had always had the entrepreneurial spirit. In fact he felt that entrepreneurs’ were born to be such, as opposed to being taught. It was either in the blood or it wasn’t. However, looking at black businesses overall, he felt that there was a need for a forum to be set up to look at how we can get businesses in the black community

Cover page feature to work together to make themselves more attractive to the mainstream market. There are many “players” in niche markets who would benefit from collaborations in this way, he felt. I agreed wholeheartedly. I told him that Panache magazine had met and spoken to many black business owners and entrepreneurs. Most were still trying to make it up the ladder and the ones that had “made it”, somehow seemed to disappear up “the ladder of success”. What upsets me most, however, is that it seems that not only do they disappear up the ladder; most pull it up after them. I wondered if Mr. Roomes would be different. He assured me that he had no issues with helping others, if he was able. Changing tact, I enquired about his Valentine’s collection of 24 carat gold plated roses. “Are the roses real?” my partner Jacqui asked. Laban informed her that they were in fact real roses that had been treated, dried and then gone through the plating process. He called for his assistant to bring two samples to show us. Both came in beautiful presentation boxes with certificates of authentication included. We took pictures and complimented him on how lovely they looked. We took pictures with him displaying his products, and with that the interview was over. We shook hands and said our farewells. However, true to his suave persona, Laban asked if it would be OK for him to present one of the roses to Jacqui. I made no objection (I would have had no dinner for a month if I had dared to say no.) and Jacqui received an early Valentine Rose. I came away from the interview with my perception about Mr. Laban Roomes changed somewhat. I had felt that like many successful 10

individuals -white or black- he would distance himself from the issues affecting the hoi polloi. He is indeed a successful black UK entrepreneur and philanthropist! However, I got to understand that he is also a man with a background and history not dissimilar to the majority of us; he had a difficult childhood but did not let his circumstances define him. Whether it is the entrepreneurial spirit that drove him or just a simple wish to better himself, he has excelled, but remains connected and empathetic to his “roots”.

t has become a challenge for every holiday: how to honor its intent, not the commercial qualities. This is especially true for Valentine's Day. How did Valentine's Day come to mean the most romantic holiday? Well, St. Valentine's Day began as a celebration of one or several early Christian saints. There are a number of stories about martyred saints with this name. But the holiday first became associated with romantic love around the 12th century when it was connected with courtly love. Geoffrey Chaucer, the English poet, popularized the holiday with his poetry about "valentines" in the 14th century. The holiday continued to evolve until, in the 15th century, lovers commemorated the day by giving one another "valentine" cards and flowers or candy. Eventually, printers began creating "Valentines" expressing affection creatively for people to give to one another and in later years, to mail to one another. The style of Valentine cards varied over time, ranging from tintypes to lace trimmed paper to decorative wreaths. What can you do to acknowledge Valentine's Day and demonstrate your affection for your beloved? Here are some gift ideas that involve
more than ordering red roses from the florist (although that is a wonderful start to the celebration): 1. Make it an occasion for the two of you. Prepare a special Valentine's dessert. If your Valentine is a lover of chocolate, make a mini-chocolate cake: one for each of you. Maybe one with a molten chocolate center would make it a truly special event! Or just make a fancy version of your beloved's favorite dessert. 2. Locate a good photo of the two of you and place it in a very special frame. You can make one (construction paper and lace trimmings) or purchase one. Give it to him or her with a poem you wrote yourself. 3. Build a Valentine box by locating an antique wood box or small metal one. Spruce it up with glitter or rhinestones or ribbon. Or even, if it is wood, take the time to refinish it into bright, satiny wood. Inside, place a special gift. Perhaps a gift card or "IOU" for some activity you can do together. After the gift is used, your Valentine can use the box for other items. But the memory will linger for years.

4. Using heavy-stock paper, cut out hearts and fold them over. Inside, place different messages of love. You can even use this gift to make it "Valentine's Week" by placing heart messages around the house for him/ her to find. Alternatively, you can include photos from times you have spent together and put those in the hearts that you scatter around the bedroom or places your Valentine relaxes. 5. Plan a romantic evening. Make reservations at a romantic or favorite restaurant. After dinner, place candles around the living room or bedroom to set the mood - or continue it. Perhaps place a bottle of wine nearby to toast another year of love. Rent a romantic couples' movie and watch it together. Or play soft, romantic music to enhance the mood. oday I’ve celebrated my 50 something… birthday. There I’ve said it. It’s out of the bag.Up in the air, in cyber space for ever. I’ve finally owned up to my age (almost) and I’ll tell you why. I have decided that I want to get married! Don’t miss-understand me, I have always wanted to get married but even though I’ve had some long term spells in relationships, the opportunity of marriage, that final commitment.That announcement. That loud statement to the rest of the world that someone loves me enough to take that step and my love is equally as strong and to allow myself to walk the aisle, in the “white dress”, has always evaded me, mainly because: surprisingly, I’ve never felt ready to tie the knot, so to speak. I’ve never felt old enough to make that sort of commitment. Then one day you wake up and you’re “nearly OLD!!!!” The question is, why are some people able to take to marriage and family like a fish to water and some people see it as the impending onset of doom, old age and endless sorting of dirty socks? There is this nagging feeling in

the back of my mind that someday, I will need to grow up and find a nice man who will want to settle down with me, but at my age? Settle down? For how long? I know that in real time, I am far too old to be,“settling down to start a family and growing old together sort of thing,” but in my Peter Pan thinking,”I’m still a student. I may be studying for a very worthwhile career but I’m still in student mode and ironically, still looking for Mr Right, but with the “later” nonsense still going on in my head. With Valentine day approaching, I have a silent wish that this “Mr Right” would turn up with a bunch of red roses, book a table for two in a nice restaurant on the river somewhere, where we would spend the evening smooching to Frank Sinatra and planning a wonderful future, whilst lusting into each other’s eyes. Then my red high heels would take me down a winding staircase and whilst he held my hand, our carriage would arrive to whisk us off to a life of ‘coupledom’. This evening, I arrive home, wearing my red high heels by the way (never grown out of those), having been out for a lovely dinner with all my single “never found Mr or Ms Right” friends, with no prince charming holding my hand and no carriage in sight.

E all know the old saying: love comes when you least expect it. But for many keen to find a new partner, a more proactive approach is preferable. And what better time to take control of your love life than in the new year? Looking for love on dating websites has become a growing trend amongst singles of all ages, and Dates 4 Us is the latest company to become part of this phenomenon. But as the name would suggest, this is a company with a difference, as it’s ‘for us’ – namely black and mixed race singles looking for love. “Dates 4 Us enables black and mixed race singles to look for love and not have to feel coy or apologetic for wanting to seek a partner with the same or similar cultural interests,” says company founder Leon James. “In a society that prides itself on multiculturalism, there is a danger that some

Many non-black men and women have an attraction to black people, and those people are equally welcome to look for love or friendship on Dates 4 Us.” James explains that he decided to launch the company following conversations he had with friends who are black and single. “After speaking to several of my single friends, I began to notice a trend, namely they all said they were unsure of how or where to find a decent partner,” says the 31-year-old. “All in their late 20s and 30s, they’d long finished college/university, they’d exhausted the nightclub scene in their earlier years, none of them worked with anybody with dating potential, and those that go to church would see the same faces every Sunday. “With these conventional means of finding a partner out the window, it left them pretty

stumped on how they’d go about finding love. “The other common denominator with all of them was that they shared the desire to settle down with a partner of their own race. Obviously, we’re a diverse community with varied interests, so I came up with the idea of creating a site that would serve as a hub for black and mixed race singles who are looking for love.” Described as “fun, free and professional,” Dates 4 Us, which is free to join, has two avenues: one for younger singletons, and the other for over-50s. “There’s certainly a need for a site where the more mature black and mixed race professionals can seek a partner. “I know this having been cornered by a couple of my older single relatives,” laughs London-born James, who is of Jamaican and Montserratian heritage. “They insisted that the site should have an avenue for more mature singles, and it made sense. After all, there’s no age limit when it comes to finding love.” With over a decade of experience marketing products targeted at the black community, James says the key to Dates 4 Us is the fact that the company knows its market. “Over the last 13 years, I’ve worked on several successful projects that were predominately targeted towards the black British community. “Myself and my team have a track record of being able to connect with black Britons from all walks of life, and as such, we’re confident we’ll be able to successfully connect with our target audience. He adds: “There are other dating sites that seek to serve black singles looking for love but most of them are subsidiaries of larger companies, and as a result, the ‘black branch’ of the company tree isn’t really a huge priority. R
emember songs like “Goodbye My Love”, “The Day Will Come” and “Disappointments”? If you do, then you should also remember one of my Favourite singers/groups: Audrey Scott and the Sadonians. For me, my favourite memory of Audrey Scott is going to a Prostate Cancer Fundraiser and hearing her sing, “If You Knew (how much I love you)” . I was transported back to when I was a little girl watching my Dad dance to reggae songs on a Sunday evening. My interest in Miss Scott grew from then. I admired the way she conducted herself, always humble and down to earth. When I listen to her sing, I feel that I can sense where Miss Scott is coming from. I now label myself one of her biggest fans. Therefore, it is no surprise that in my new role as entertainment correspondent, I would seek to interview Miss Scott at some point. To this end, I courted her on Facebook, making her laugh and giving her warning that she was on my “hit list”. She said she was ready when I was. Therefore, with this being our Valentine Issue, I decided that an interview with Miss Scott would be perfect for my column. As I sat opposite her and observed her up close, I found it hard to believe that Miss Scott began singing in choirs at the age of 12, recording her first single at the age

“I’m Alive!” Audrey Scott
of 17. Before me was a vibrant, high energy lady, with humorous and enthusiastic conversation. We were soon chatting away like two old friends catching up. I asked her it had been a smooth transition from singing in the choir to singing Lovers Rock. “Not really.... back then we didn’t even know that we were singing Lovers Rock, we didn’t realise they had a name for it. As far as we were concerned we were writing and singing to reggae music. We were young and just enjoying being able to sing. I even remember one of our singers coming to rehearsals in her school uniform. Unfortunately being so young also meant that financially we didn’t get all that was due to us.” The Sadonians split up not too long after the recording of those few early songs. “No one even got to see us sing live” reflects Miss Scott. After the band broke up Miss Scott took time off to have her family. However, it was only a matter of time before she returned to her passion. She recalled the moment she realised that her talent was not only acknowledged but appreciated. “My younger sister contacted me and told me that someone called Sir Lloyd was looking for me. I was asked to participate in a Mother’s Day event in Catford. I was

nervous; I would be appearing with my peers; I had never met them before. I planned to sing – among my repertoire – a couple of songs in tribute to Caroll Thompson. When I began the first few bars of “Goodbye My Love”, the audience erupted! I thought the roof was going to come off! I couldn’t believe it! It was then it dawned on me that I had a following and people really appreciated my singing”.
a who’s who in the reggae fraternity, Miss Scott still calls herself a “New kid on the block” and counts it a privilege and a honour to be singing amongst her peers.
Moments like those helped to bolster Miss Scott’s confidence in her talent, encouraging her to continue to this day. I asked her about her last song “I’m Alive (I’m A Survivor)”, what was the inspiration for that song?
“Believe in love! I am still searching for my King. I don’t hate men, I love my men! I have sons. Speak out what you want to the Universe. Don’t concentrate on what you don’t want, concentrate on what you want. Make your list. Love is not just for Valentine’s Day. God is love and because we are Gods we exude love. I am a Goddess!”
“That song came from me, from what I have been through. If you listen to the words, you will know and hear where I am coming from. I keep saying, I am not a writer, but Starky Banton who produced the song, disagrees. At the time he asked me what I wanted to write about. I said I wanted to write and sing about how I felt. For years I didn’t sing because of how I felt, but now I am speaking out girlfriend! I am enjoying myself.” Not only is she is enjoying herself but she has taken steps to take her singing to another level.
In closing, I inform Miss Scott that this is our Valentine issue and ask her what she would like to say to her followers/fan base, for those of us who will read this article, on the subject of love.
I parted from Miss Scott with a smile on my face, feeling energised and inspired on a cold January evening. It was only when I saw others smiling at me on the way home that I realised I had been humming quite loudly the chorus to “I’m Alive (I’m a survivor)”. Miss Scott I salute you...
“I now have someone looking after my singing career. I plan to expand my singing style. I would love to do styles like Motown, Jazz, even Pop. When I was young I remember stars like Mark Bolan. Take the stairs, not the lift: If you take the stairs, or get off the bus one stop early and are generally more active without actually working out, you could burn around an extra 250 calories a day. This assists in settling of any solids at the bottom of the containers. The oil is then purified through filtering depending on the clarity required. Some natural Argan oils may contain low amounts of sediments but they do not in any way affect the quality of the oil. Culinary Argan Oil Cooking Argan oils are mostly used in salads, couscous, dipping bread among many other uses and have a nutty scent from the roasting of the kernels. The grinding of roasted almond and Argan oil with stones produce Amlou, which is a peanut butter like paste that is used in bread dipping when mixed with honey. ho am I really? Who is the person, company, body behind such: fresh, new, life giving, richly cool breath of air in clay vessels? It is about my heart and the passion I have for the earth. My idea of trying to contribute to nature by transforming the earth into something luxurious and befitting: using my skill to capture dust, mould clay and create vases which can be used in a variety of settings.

Truly Africa is rich in values, moral, cultures, traditions, mineral resources, oxides, clay qualities and many new and expensive raw materials which help to increase the African values. The earth produces, I fashion it, you buy, learn, study from what I do, you see, I also teach, mentor, inspire etc.
I believe that now is the time to show, sell, exhibit, educate, release, impress, excite and influence all generations from the kids right through to the older generation (who really still feel young). Clay is my primary material, my fingers are my number one tool, amongst others used to express the higher and deeper dimensions I go to, to create texture, culture , beauty, traditional African marks, contemporary new infused with layers, marks, woven, layered. Uncle George talks GUBA GUBA’s Tribute to the Late Komlar Dumor
In 2009, he became the first host of Africa Business Report on BBC World News and regularly presented Focus on Africa till his untimely death.
N
ews of the death of notable and charismatic Ghanaian journalist - Komlar Dumor on the 18th of January 2013 shocked the nation. That day will forever be remembered as a day Ghana lost an influential personality. Komlar Afeke Dumor was born on the 3rd of October 1972 in Accra, Ghana. He graduated with a BA in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Ghana, and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. In 2003, his unique and effortless style of presenting, earned him the Ghana Journalist of the Year award. Following this feat, he joined the BBC African Service in 2006 as host of the radio programme; Network Africa. From 2006 to 2009 Komlar Dumor hosted Network Africa for BBC World Service radio, before joining The World Today programme.

Komlar Dumor was an influential individual, responsible for the increased coverage of Africa by the BBC. He was viewed as a global Ambassador for Africa due to his relentless promotion of the image of Africa. In 2013, he was named as one of the 100 most influential Africans of the year in the New African magazine (2013). Komlar Dumor had a fruitful journalistic career. His interminable hard-work earned him the opportunity to travel across Africa, meet the continent’s top entrepreneurs and report on the latest business trends around the continent. He also interviewed a number of high-profile guests including Bill Gates and Kofi Annan. Some of his various accomplishments include his coverage of the funeral of former South African President, Nelson Mandela. Context is a Mother
R
ecently a Facebook friend tagged me in this picture saying: “Now I’m saying to the younger generation “BACK IN MY DAY” lol. We are slap bang in a time when things are being redefined before our eyes! Exciting right? However it made me wonder how many businesses are responding to these changes and whether their offering is within today’s ‘context’. By definition a ‘phone’ according to Google is: a system for transmitting voices over a distance using wire or radio, by converting acoustic vibrations to electrical signals.
BUT… There is a barrage of stats from all over the web, which tell us that the ‘phone call’ is not what people do mostly on their ‘phones’. I think we all know this, so what’s my point. Within a modern context, a ‘phone’ means something we can use to access information (emails, web, contacts, data) or use as a tool (photos, torch, clock, compass) not to mention the millions of possibilities presented to us from apps. It’s ALL about CONTEXT. ...But context doesn’t wait for you or your business to ‘catch up’ it just ‘is’. And if you’re not ‘with it’ then context can be a MOTHER F$%#3R. Just ask the 1,000’s of businesses that either never take off or end up on the SME scrap heap. Someone contacted me a few days ago with an idea they had to start a new business. They continued to articulate the business model as well as they could until I realised that what they were talking about, relative to the sector they wanted to go into was an ‘old phone’. It’s almost as if they were saying that they

wanted to offer people another way to connect to the internet, but it would mean they’d have to ‘dial up’ each time. Initially I was stunned and couldn’t believe that they didn’t get the context from within which people operate today. But I realised something; there are ‘levels to this’ and context exists in ways that are subtler than we are used to. Let me give you an example.....If someone was transported from, let’s say 15 years ago and you showed them a video on Vine or a Tweet for example, they would assume you were showing them a clip or excerpt from a longer piece of content. Not realising that clip or Tweet IS the entire piece of content. Whereas, we, in a modern context understand that the overall proposition of media lead content has changed. And a 7 second video or 140 character piece of content is ‘normal’.
1. Is the business you’re doing or would like to do in ‘context’ with today’s market? 2. Did you come up with the answer to question 1) or did you ask an expert J ? Context can be a MOTHER F$%#3R but it can also be the Mother which births new ideas and ways of doing things. These created by entrepreneurs and new businesses that understand its context. It’s the reason why people didn’t ‘get’ Twitter, or can’t understand why the kids are on Snapchat or Instagram, or why Bing won’t eclipse Google and why Yahoo! are struggling to define themselves. The younger generation out there will be familiar with the term ‘LEVELS’ and for those not familiar, it really describes you, or your businesses ability to advance within it’s market and stay ahead of the game.
The difference in how that content is perceived is quite subtle yet fundamental to today’s business models and consumer propositions.

n September 1939, like some 800,000 other children during World War II, our mother was evacuated out of London and away from the Blitz. Why ‘Cool Runnings 2’ has already been happening for years

very sports fan loves a plucky underdog. There’s something about a little guy, an amateur, taking on a dominant force of professionals and holding their own that stirs up all of our own ambitions. We can relate to an amateur. That’s why everyone loves Cool Runnings; the classic story of four island boys who had never seen snow going to the Calgary Olympics and actually threatening to do well is one of the most popular sports movies of the last 20 years. Phrases like ‘Cool Runnins mon’, ‘Kiss me lucky egg’, ‘Sanka, ya dead?’ and of course “Feel the rhthym, feel the rhyme!” are ubiquitously associated with Jamaica for practically everyone under 30. So it’s a shame that lots of people my age and younger, that I’ve encountered at least, don’t even realise that it’s based on a true story. Sure, the four characters from the film are fictional and played by American actors, but a group of Jamaicans really did go to Calgary in 1988, they really did set some impressive times, and they really did flip over and travel halfway down a

They made a lasting impression on the winter Olympics – 1988 was the first winter Olympiad to include several tropical nations such as Costa Rica, The Philippines, and Fiji. Jamaica’s respectable performance and the popularity they earned helped lend credibility to the idea of hot countries competing in winter sports, and new countries such as Ghana have continued to debut every four years. The bobsled team themselves returned to the Olympics throughout the 90’s, and a member of the 2002 contingent, Lascelles Brown, went on to win silver and bronze medals for Canada in 2006 and 2010. In 2010, Devon Brown, the brakeman from the original team, reminisced on the aftermath of 1988 with the BBC.

But when he lost his job in 2012, he saw an opportunity to revive his love for bobsleigh. As he explained to Canada.com, “I was hungry and I was angry.”

At 44, and with no sponsors, Watt revived the Cool Runnings dream out of his own pocket. By his own confession, he barely gets by financially. He flew people over from Jamaica to compete in four-man tournaments across North America, but as injuries and money problems hit, they had to settle for the twoman again, and it was in that category that Watt and brakeman Marvin Dixon made the grade to qualify for Sochi a few weeks ago.
"We thought we'd be ridiculed and chased out of town, it couldn't have been further from the truth. We got home and people were just very proud of us.” 2002 was the last time the Jamaicans made it to the Winter Olympics, and since then the team has pretty much gone away. It had been shrinking for a while from a four-man team competing in the two-man competition, and half of the twosome, Lascelles Brown, went off to find success in Canada. The team didn’t manage to qualify for 2006, funding was cut off, and it appeared the story of the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team was over, and the dream was dead. 12 years on, it is back, and in fact while the media headlines their qualification for Sochi 2014 as “Cool Runnings: 2”, the story of how the dream stayed alive already sounds more like a movie plot than real life. Winston Watt was a member of the 1994, 1998 and 2002 teams, setting an Olympic record two-man push-start time with Lascelles Brown in the latter. He retired in 2006 and moved to New York with his childhood girlfriend, but when they broke up, he moved back to the small town of Evanston, where the team had set up camp for the Salt Lake City games in 2002. He worked on the Wyoming oilfields for years, met a new girl and had a son. 94

But still without any sponsors or backing from the Jamaican Olympic Committee, the team were facing the real possibility of missing out simply because they couldn’t afford to go to Russia. That’s where the truly heart warming part of this story begins. When news broke of the team’s predicament in early January, the Internet jumped into action. Watt reckoned they would need around US$40,000 to make the trip – a completely unofficial online crowd funding campaign raised $30,000 within two days, and a separate campaign on Crowdtilt. com has currently raised over $80,000. The world may have thought the Jamaican bobsleigh team was dead, but its love for them was clearly still alive and kicking. As a real life sports underdog story, it’s not going to get much better than Winston Watt and Marvin Dixon in Sochi this month. Hollywood doesn’t often have good ideas, so don’t hold your breath for an announcement of ‘Cool Runnings 2’, but who cares if it doesn’t happen – the true story is already better than anything Disney could write about lucky eggs.
