D
ear Readers, this month’s edition of Panache E-Magazine celebrates and honours the WOMEN in our lives.
With this in mind, Panache E-Magazine highlights some important dates for your diaries. Eg:
It is a special day, when we celebrate the contributions that mothers around the world make as leaders, caregivers, providers, and role models.
International Women’s Day 2014. Theme: INSPIRING CHANGE. Women’s equality has made positive gains but the world is still unequal. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, political and economic achievements of women while focusing world attention on areas requiring further action.
The health and prosperity of families and communities are strongly linked to that of mothers. Over the last century, women in the UK have made significant gains in maternal health, access to education, and political rights. Sadly, elsewhere in the world, not every mother has the rights that mothers have here in the UK. In many developing countries, women still lack access to basic medical care and cannot secure enough food for themselves and their families. These barriers prevent these mothers from reaching their full potential. Women’s equality has made positive gains but the World is still unequal. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, political and economic achievements of women while focusing world attention on areas requiring further action.
Mothering Sunday A Christian holiday celebrated throughout Europe that falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent. Secularly, it became an occasion for honouring the mothers of children and giving them presents. It is increasingly being called Mother’s Day, although that holiday has other origins. In the UK, Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the same way as Mother’s Day is celebrated elsewhere. However, it is not important how you honour and celebrate the Women in your lives, just make sure that you do.

We live in a world besieged with many human problems, a world ravaged with man-made catastrophes and natural disasters. always lain in the fashion and entertainment industry, and in helping others. I had a very prestigious job in the Commonwealth - jetsetting and travelling the world. However, there always comes a time when one needs to follow one’s heart. Somehow, I felt that my talents were not being adequately utilized as an employee of the Commonwealth and I just had this urge to follow my heart and my passion. What was the best piece of career advice you received? They do say, ‘If you want to see your dreams come true, do not go to sleep’! Rather than tell you the advice I received, I would want to give my own advice here. The motivation for doing what I do comes directly from the heart and this has helped me get to where I am today .For anyone to succeed, one has to work hard and put in 110% in everything that they do. In most cases having your own venture means following your passion. While many people separate their interests from their work and therefore find their work to be a burden that encroaches on their free time, my hobbies are intertwined with my work and therefore I find that because my work gives me so much pleasure, I always find the time to do the things that I do. What was your career tipping point? I can blessedly say that the tipping point of my career was when it became apparent to me that the world believed in my dream! I have ventured into the world and broken barriers and borders to gain global visibility. I have taken the POSITIVE RUNWAY brand to all the four corners of the world within a very short space of time - with the ease of travel and other technological advances presented

My organisation is a member of the ENOUGH FOOD FOR EVERYONE IF Campaign, a coalition of leading UK development organisations working alongside UNICEF, Comic Relief, Save the Children, Concern Worldwide, and many others, in addition to being a member of the International AIDS Society; the People’s Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights; and the HIV/AIDS Activist Network, as well as many other global affiliations. My organization has also received endorsements by various high profile personalities and global organisation around the world. Although initially set up to tackle the spread of HIV/AIDS, our approach has attracted other cause-related, social transformation and development programmes. In the lead up to the G8 Summit, my organization contributed to the efforts of the ENOUGH FOOD FOR EVERYONE IF Campaign to highlight the effects of world hunger ahead of the G8 Summit. International Women
What should women be doing more of to succeed in their career? It is no secret that women still face challenges in politics, business and social life in general. In many countries, cultures and social conditioning have prevented women from unleashing their full potential, especially in leadership roles. Apart from unlearning the traditional mindsets and social conditioning, as women we need to empower ourselves to continuously improve and push the limits that have been placed on our full potential to participate in the political, economic and social spheres. As women, we need to believe that it is actually politically correct for women to compete and contribute to social, economic and political activity on equal footing with our male counterparts, without feeling that we are overstepping our boundaries or compromising men’s masculinity. Another important aspect that is required for women to succeed in their careers is the fast tracking of skills development and knowledge transfer. Women need to advance their careers through top-notch training, leadership development, mentoring and networking opportunities to expand our skills and our networks. How important is mentoring for women in leadership? I believe the age of the token woman sitting on the Board or in a Parliamentary seat is over! In the 21st century, we do not want women who just make up the numbers. We want a generation of women that makes and influences real decisions on the global agenda. I believe it is important to mentor women in leadership skills because a society that tries to run on half of its brain power and half its human capability by blocking the role of women in problem solving, in economic leadership, in political role - a society that runs on half of its human resources is bound to fail. As stated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, “Women represent half of the world’s population … and should have their fair share in making decisions.” This view was reiterated by former U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton who said “…no government can succeed if it excludes half of its people from important decisions.” At the conclusion of the Millennium Development Goals, the new Post-2015 United Nations Development Agenda has placed sustainable development its core. I believe that in order for the world to attain the d e s i r e d sustainable development, and for women to be effective players in a future global agenda, the gender gap must be closed to ensure that the

potential of every woman and girl is fully utilised. I believe it is important that women and girls have the necessary leadership skills in order for them to play an integral part in the sustainable development of the world. In the case of Africa, the unprecedented economic growth brings with it emerging challenges related to sustainable development and women should therefore, be involved in addressing these challenges, which include widespread and extreme levels of poverty and its feminization; heightened human and food insecurity; rising unemployment for a growing youth population; falling levels of education and health care provision; as well as conflict and instability. The gender equality and women’s empowerment strategy for Africa and for the rest of the world must be premised on women as key and indispensable actors and leaders in accelerating economic growth and in achieving socially and environmentally sustainable development. What is important for achieving greater impact in your career - award ceremonies or mastermind groups? Award ceremonies give us good reason to celebrate our achievements and accomplishments, which come from hard work. However, within a short period of time the excitement surrounding the Award ceremonies wane and we have to confront ourselves with challenging realities. We have to confront ourselves with what is staring at us when the applause stops, when the spotlight fades and the crowd clears. One therefore, cannot afford to rest on one’s laurels and get too comfortable with self-praise and appreciating one’s own accomplishments, because there is always hard work to be done in order to progress and move forward in our careers and the work that we do.

Cover page feature What is your must-have career tool? I am blessed and privileged in that I work in an industry that I have a passion for and enjoy every bit of my work. As indicated above, the motivation to do what I do comes directly from the heart and from my desire to achieve change in the way people perceive one another. I believe passion for your work is a must have tool to a progressive career. It is important to have a passion for the work involved in one’s career because without passion, one will not survive. When one is focused on getting the job done and not on the rewards that come with it, there is no limit to how far one can go. What advice would you give to your 8 year old self? As an 8 year old girl, I would advise myself that the 21st century presents incredible opportunities for women to reassert their position in the gender dynamics and to hold legitimate positions of power and authority to influence the direction of the global agenda in politics, business and the social environment. I would go on and tell my 8 year old self that “As you sit amongst your brothers and sisters, be heard in your home. In your class of 30, be heard in the room. In your city of thousands, be heard. And in a world of billions, remember to be heard. Remember to make your mark; remember to leave your positive imprint!” I would also advise myself to be humble enough to ask for help, but also to be smart enough to remain independent and not depend on a man on anyone else for that matter! Why is the world a better place because of what you do? I believe that every human that has 18

International Women existed, does exist, and will exist in future deserves dignity, and I hope that through my actions I can contribute to the delivery of this dignity. If human beings rely only on material development, we can’t be sure of a positive outcome. As indicated by the Dalai Lama, in the midst of all the technological advancements, the planet desperately more peacemakers, healers, restorers, and lovers of humanity. Employing technological, political and economic advancements will only be beneficial if we seek the welfare of all human beings. Human beings are the only species with the potential to decide the fate of the world and humanity, and we need to cultivate contentment and simplicity in our lives. This is why developing sincere concern for others gives us peace of mind; it brings with it trust and a sense of peace. Cultivating warmheartedness contributes to our own wellbeing. Through service to others, time spent serving others, and our positive experiences with other people we are provided with the chance to find unity in the diversity of the gifts with which God has blessed us. It has always been my hope and prayer that the small contributions I make through some of my activities can one day serve humanity and bring dignity to each and every human on the planet - or at least to those that cross my path in life! Who is your inspirational hereo and why? God is my role model. Every day, God encourages us to touch someone’s heart, encourage someone’s mind, and inspire someone’s soul. Why is celebrating International Women’s Day Important? It has been said many times over that women are the back bone of society. Over the years, women’s potential contributions to politics, economic advances, social progress and environmental protection have been marginalized. In failing to utilise the potential and talents of female populations, the world is under investing its human capital needed to assure sustainable development. It is inspiring to see that women’s equality has made many positive gains. However these gains are too few and far in between. To date, we still have a huge gap in gender parity in many areas. It is surprising the even in the 21st Century, there have so far only been a few amazing women in very prominent and visible high ranking positions of power, influence and authority. I believe investment in women’s rights and gender equality can bring the much needed transformative change to women’s lives and enable real progress in the context of a future global agenda. The current World Economic Forum Gender Gap Report shows that countries and economies that have a smaller gender gap in access to education, health survivability, economic participation, and political participation are more competitive and prosperous. It is therefore important to celebrate International Women’s Day Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

to celebrate the social, political and economic achievements of women, and to focus world attention on areas requiring further action in the area of gender parity. omen are an unbeatable force of nature. Looking across history, women have served significant purposes in the world; with one of the biggest roles being the responsibility of populating the world- as mothers and child bearers. Women have a unique tenacity of strength which influences their everyday life as they simultaneously handle family life and work responsibilities. To acknowledge the role of women across the world, the United Nations have set aside a day in March every year to celebrate women. The International Women’s day this year will be celebrated on Saturday the 8th of March. In acknowledgement of this day, we look back at a few women from 3 different continents that have contributed greatly during their time and in turn, have shaped our present lives.

The Suffragettes’ battle brought about a series of change: On 21st November 1918, Parliament passed the Qualification of Women Act which allowed women to stand for Parliament. The Equal Franchise Act was passed in 1928, giving women equal voting rights with men for women over 21. aa Asantewaa was the Queen Mother of Ejisuhene of the Ashanti Confederacy. Prior to European colonization, the Ashanti people developed an influential West African empire. She was the Gatekeeper of the “Golden Stool” (Sika ‘dwa). In 1896, King Prempeh I of the Asanteman federation was captured and exiled to the Seychelles islands due to his opposition to British rule in West Africa- by the British who had come to call the area the British Gold Coast. In 1900, British colonial governor Frederick Hodgson called a meeting and at the meeting, Hodgson stated that King Prempeh I would continue to suffer an exile from his native land and that the Ashanti people were to surrender to the British their historical, ancestral Golden Stool - a dynastic symbol of the Ashanti empire. The colonial governor demanded that it be surrendered to allow Hodgson to sit on the Sika ‘dwa as a symbol of British power.
Yaa Asantewaa rose and said the following: “I must say this, if you the men of Ashanti will not go forward, then we will. We the women will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight the white men. We will fight till the last of us falls in the battlefields.” The Ashanti-British “War of the Golden Stool” was led by Queen Mother Nana Yaa Asantewaa with an army of 5,000. While Yaa Asantewaa was captured by the British and deported, her bravery stirred a kingdom-wide movement for the return of Prempeh I and for independence of the present day Ghana.

Dawn Spence Counsellor/Psychotherapist Born in Jamaica Life philosophy: - keep the faith!
Motherhood Rocks!
I
myself am a mother to probably the most divine creature on the planet. I say that because she is mine, and I love her more than anything or anyone in this World. I look at my daughter with rose tinted glasses, who doesn’t? Most of the time when I look at her I see this perfect, talented, witty and lovely pre-teenager. However, when the rose tinted glasses come off, reality kicks in and I realise that she is just another human being who is at an age where she hates combing her hair for a start. She just can’t be bothered. She’d rather do something else that is more interesting and because she has such an independent spirit, I am left with a constant ripple of anxiety, as I find myself having to remember to check most things before she leaves for school, which includes checking that she has combed her hair, homework is done, checked etc. If I forget because I am distracted for any reason and she manages to slip into the car unnoticed, half-way through
our journey, I am usually in a state of shock as I look in the rear-view mirror, to find a cakey-faced monster with uncombed frizzy hair staring at me as if nothing is wrong. She would quite happily go through the day, with no concern about her appearance, because there are more interesting things to focus on, like a good game of football. And I am sure that her peer group think the same way about themselves too, because, no one bats an eye lid when she arrives at the playground looking like she’s stepped through a hedge backwards, I am the only one who seems to be concerned about it. Now, some readers might be thinking that it is my responsibility to make sure that my child leaves the house in a pristine condition with her hair combed, smelling nice etc. but the fact is, it is an impossible task. At the ripe old age of 11, she now insists that she does everything herself. She even makes her own lunch and woe betide anyone who interferes with her morning process. Now I am not complaining about that, as I believe that an independent and clever child is a blessing. But as her mother, every

moment of my waking life is consumed about considering her well-being. Is she clean, do her shoes fit, does she have enough shoes and so on. All my decisions usually featurethe repercussions and the consequences that will affect her. So I can’t help but worry constantly that my child will be safe, happy, eat right at school and at home, keep clean etc. etc. I had no idea when I was growing up that motherhood would be so complex, that the person or people you love so much can at the same time, cause so much anxiety and the thing is this, they have absolutely no idea that they are affecting you in this way. At this particular juncture in my motherhood experience, all I have to worry about is the cakey faced monster in the back of the car grinning at me at 8.45 in the morning, but what about what’s to come????
Mother’s Day and of course these boundaries are also there for them to know how to take care of themselves. It’s about wanting to make sure that our children are safe and at the same time, finding that skill in our nurturing of them to ensure that they become happy and responsible human beings in the world at large, but at the same time remembering not to stifle any independent spirit that they may have, as this will only restrict that potential. So, there it is, being a mother is a tough job, though at the same time it is in my opinion, the most wonderful experience of all. The love you experience is immeasurable. So dare I say, despite all this worry, “Motherhood Rocks”.
I am secretly hopeful that my wonderful child will not turn into a “mini-me”. Oh my God, the thought scares me as I was just as independent in my post teenage years as my daughter is now. How on earth did my poor mother cope with that??? And all through those years I had no idea how much she worried about me. Not to mention the raves, that in some, cases didn’t begin until the early hours of the morning. I was oblivious to her anxieties about me. After all, I was just having fun. Now the table has turned. Obviously there are boundaries and it’s up to us as parents to enforce those boundaries in a balanced way, so that our children understand and respect our principles

hink of Mother’s Day and one normally thinks of their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and godmothers. Generally any female who has played a major motherly role in our lives. Mother’s Day is seen as the special day that is dedicated to pampering them and showing them how special we think they are, perhaps with a present, flowers and a card. In the back of our minds we know the day will come when our mothers will no longer be with us and will pass on, leaving with us the memory of their love and care. Indeed some have already lost their mothers and as such Mother’s Day is a day of bittersweet memories and reminder of who is longer with them. Whilst some of us continue to give our mothers flowers and a card, some can only lay their flowers on their mothers grave. Sad but true. Elaine Henry is such a person. Elaine’s mother sadly passed away from Stomach Cancer on 4th February 2012 which ironically is World Cancer Day. It was obvious that Elaine’s memory of her mother’s passing is still very fresh.

“Mum was a very firm and confident woman, even though she was ill, she still made her presence felt and made sure things was done the way she wanted it. I would laugh at how she ordered others about. She had a motherly role in every church she attended. She was “Mother Henry”. This continued even when she went to live in Jamaica. Mum would shop so much that she used one of her bedrooms as a storeroom. Anyone who visited would go home with bags of shopping. She always gave. I believe that was her calling. She was called to give. “I remember when giving birth to my first daughter. I was inundated with so many gifts & cards mainly from well-wishers who knew my mother. Because she gave so much I continue to receive and I in turn give. I believe we should always find a way to give back to others”. I met Elaine about 7 years ago; at the time she was fundraising for breast cancer. What I did not realise then was that Elaine had been passionate about raising funds for cancer research and its cure for the last 15 years. When I thought about Panache E-Magazine’s Mother’s Day edition, I contacted Elaine to get a more in-depth understanding of the

Elaine Takes The Baton! work she is doing. I had been aware that Elaine was been very busy with the Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life project which is a global event which is being held in London for the very first time in its full 24hr format, as commissioned by the American Cancer society.. Currently there is not a day when Elaine is not campaigning and urging us to sign up for or contribute towards Relay for Life. I asked her how she came to be involved.
interested people. After which, they contacted me asking if I would be interested in being the Chairperson for Relay for Life in London. I took just one minute to say yes. This might sound impressive, but it is an allconsuming role. There are teams to organise, fundraising events to arrange. I have been given a target of £25K to raise. The main issue for me is to get more teams for the relay. We need 20 teams – currently we have 8. We desperately need more.”
“I saw an article in the paper (I can’t remember which one) asking if anyone was interested in with the Cancer Research Relay for Life. I made enquiries and was invited to an informal meeting with many other

involving ourselves in enough charities especially one like Cancer Research that touches so many of our lives regardless of colour or creed.” Elaine went on to explain why we need to get involved in Relay For Life and not to get it confused with Race for life. “This is a community event for all members of the family to come out and have a fun day while fundraising over 24hrs (12pm-12pm). Relay for life requires teams of “relayers” to walk around a track keeping at least one member of the team on the track throughout the event, symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.
could not help but be moved by Elaine’s passion and commitment to Relay for Life. She has encouraged me to look at how I can give back and possibly do more for the things I believe in. I reflected that Elaine’s mother would have been so proud of her daughter and her achievements. I shall be looking forward to Relay for Life.
Relay for Life London East is taking place on June 21st at Henry Barrass Stadium, Jubilee Park, Houndsfield Road, Edmonton, Enfield, N9 7RH, starting at 12pm.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Relay for life has an opening ceremony for Survivors of Cancer and those still fighting. At dusk we have a Candle ceremony with Candle bags lit up around the track, dedicated to those who have passed away. The next day we have a Closing ceremony encouraging all to continue the fight for a cure. During the whole event we keep the stage busy with entertainment and stage shows bringing awareness to the community to help beat cancer sooner. I hope this brings clarity to those confused about the difference. Body Fitness Tips by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru
W
e hope last month’s health tips were helpful, so here are more health tips to help you with your exercise routine. We all want to be fit, lose weight and look good so let’s put these tips into action and look forward to being much healthier. So Go forward and be healthy:
HEALTH:
Most people admit that when they’re under stress, healthy eating habits can be difficult to maintain. Whether eating to fill an emotional need or grabbing fast food simply because there’s no time to prepare something healthy, a stressed-out lifestyle is rarely a healthy one. Furthermore, the release of stress hormones can interfere with blood sugar levels, making it even harder to ignore your cravings.
EXERCISE:
When you feel an unhealthy food binge coming on, try hitting the gym instead. 48
MARCH 2014
/
According to research, physical activity improves inhibitory control within the brain and can help regulate how likely you are to give in to your cravings. Aerobic exercise also releases the same mood-inducing chemicals as high calorie foods, so you’ll not only relieve anxiety but will be naturally decreasing your food cravings each time you go.
NUTRITION:
To help keep your weight and mood steady, you should always opt for high-fibre foods. These take longer to digest and cause a slower, more gradual rise in blood sugar than refined foods. Start by choosing whole fruit over juice, wholegrain or granary bread instead of white and high-fibre breakfast cereals (such as Shredded Wheat, Weetabix or Muesli) over sugary alternatives (such as Rice Crispies, Coco Pops or Cornflakes).

Valerie INTRODUCES
Improve your Health – Keep your Health - Be Healthy; Organic nutritional Super Antioxidant Drink
I
n order to maintain health, it is necessary to produce antioxidants equal to the amount of free radicals found in the body. Antioxidants are health boosting compounds also known as phyto-nutrients. These are found in all fruits but in greater quantities in superfruits. A diet high in phyto-nutrients has been shown to help fight the diseases responsible for 75% of all deaths each year, including heart disease and cancer. How effectively an antioxidant-rich fruit neutralises free radicals is measured in terms of its ORAC score. Just for comparison, an orange has ORAC score of 750. The body needs approximately 5,000 antioxidants per day to fight free radicals. Free radicals are rogue molecules that proliferate (grow, multiply, thrive) in our bodies as a result of exposure to environmental chemicals, convenience foods and stress. Even the ageing process and exercising produces more of them. A balanced diet usually provide us with between 1,700 and 2,000 antioxidants leaving us with a deficit of

3,000 a day that must be provided through supplements.
Benefits of Le’vive Juice
“The amount of antioxidants in your body is directly proportional to the amount of the time you are to live” Dr. Richard Cuttler, former Director of the National Institute of Aging. Washington. DC, USA The 5 Superfruits in the Levive Health drink are: 1. Acai Berry – around 20,000 ORAC* 2. Goji Berry – around 30,000 ORAC* 3. Mangosteen fruit – around 20,000 ORAC* 4. Noni Berry – around 30,000 ORAC* 5. Pomegranate – around 10,500 ORAC* Ardyss Le’vive, concentrates the power of the world’s top five antioxidant producing fruits in one product: Mangosteen, Noni, Acai Berry, Goji and Pomegranate. Mother By Clayton Brown
I
n my formative years I did not have what some would call a normal childhood. At the age of 3 or 4 my Mother and Father left me in Jamaica in the care of my grandparents and in an effort to make a better life for our family, immigrated to the UK. Nearly three years later they sent for me. I knew I had a mum and dad but when I saw them again, they were strangers to me. However, although I had forgotten what they looked like, I knew instinctively that this man and this woman loved me. In my mother’s eyes I was always her special boy. She never actually said “you’re my special boy”, but the way she treated me, the love she gave me, when I had done nothing to deserve it, made me feel special. That ability to make your offspring feel significant in a World of billions was what made her that special person in my life. My Mother is no longer with us now. She passed away over a year ago.
mother was very sick and in hospital. We found her very ill and in need of a blood transfusion. The hospital staff had given up on her but after the blood transfusion and a lot of prayer; she recovered quickly and was soon well enough to go home. We spent the next two weeks with her, laughing and reminiscing. We returned to the UK grateful and relieved. A month later we got the news that she had died of a stroke while at the hospital waiting for a scheduled check-up. I was devastated, my mind was numb, I felt lost, disconnected and alone. It was at that moment I knew how much of my heart my mother occupied. My mother was the only person that I ever trusted with all my faith; she would never let me down. She is gone from me, but the bond which unites our souls can never be severed; she lives within my heart. May God reward you for the love and kindness you have shown me; and grant you eternal peace!
I was with her a month before she died. My sister and I had taken the first flight to Jamaica when we were told that our 56

Michael Connell: Through the Lens by photographer Duane Mercier
I
met Michael on the opening day of his 'Povera' exhibition held just outside large gates of the Lewisham police station. Michael contacted me to photograph the event, which involved the public being invited to help paint one of his pieces. On display were three large pieces with the tallest, aptly named 'Jenny from the Block', being well over 6ft in height. The two pieces on the extremities were already painted and the one in the middle was completely white and void of any paint.
The exhibition began with Michael's sponsor Sue Kreitzman, former popular food writer and now heavyweight in local art and curating circles, being present to apply the first set of paint to the exhibit. After doing this she was invited to sign the guest book and leave comments about the event.
Event sponsor Sue Kreitzman getting ready to apply the first touches to the exhibit.
Michael’s charitable piece, set to be painted by the public.
Shortly after this, members of the public immediately began joining in. Adults, children, couples, families and even the elderly, of all races, wandered up to the piece and picked up the paint and brushes provided and proceeded to leave their mark on the exhibit. It was amazing the see the level of community spirit engendered by

using art. The main body of the pieces are predominantly made of polystyrene with additional attached materials to craft the design. The texture is soft and pliable and the finish is colourful and absolutely beautiful.
Close up rendition of Michael’s creation called ‘Jenny from the Block’.
As the day proceeded, I asked Michael to outline his history to me and the events that led him to this point as an artist. He described to me that his journey began in his twenties where he would just find himself wanting

to spend every moment of his existence drawing, painting or sculpting anything he could get his hands on. He said that the only way that he could communicate fully with the world and express himself with the utmost clarity was if he found a way to bring the ideas and visions in his head into reality. The way he has done this is through art.
Honestly, I am no art connoisseur, but I have been to various museums here in the UK and on the continent and I can unreservedly say that some of Michael's best work deserves to be placed in this nation's major art galleries. I have seen less worthy pieces on display at the Tate Modern. This is a man who still spends every available spare moment of his life, designing, painting and bringing his creations to life. The piece painted by the public was auctioned and the proceeds went to Cancer Research.
Michael’s Arts - http://www.michaelsart.co.uk/
At the end of the day I went to Michael's home to give him the photographs I had taken of his event during the day. He was kind enough to invite me into the space where he works and brings his creations to life. As we stepped into Michael's rather large shed, I thought I was suddenly transported to some artistic version of the twilight zone. There were paintings, models and full size pieces, new and old hung on every available space on the wall and ceiling, charting a history of his life's designs. The entire floor space
was also covered in with his creative works. Michael then informed me that this was but a small portion of his collection and the rest of it was currently being held in storage awaiting his next exhibition.

ABOUT MICHAEL CONNELL
Mother’s Day Michael Connell
have always been a creative person as far back as I can remember. I studied art at Waltham Forest College then moved on to Kent Institute of Art and Design, where I studied Spatial Design. I was also a founder member of Lewisham Art House, which was a residence for Artists, based in Hillifields School. Over the years I have done a few commission pieces and still have aspirations to do more. I’ve also decided to concentrate on building up a large body of work for future exhibitions. I look upon art as been a part of me, an extension of myself. I can be found most evenings deep in solace in my studio. For the past 6 years I have been showcasing my work to the public. My work involves the use of many materials ranging from broken glass, wood and sash cord, basically anything that I can “recycle”. I try to make my work as imaginative and creative as possible and in doing so have developed my own unique style. Although I like to create abstract forms it can also be contemporary. Being a physical person my work has no limitations in terms of size and time. Art has always been my passion. My inspiration comes from the Universe, Nature and the Spirits and I regard myself as an instrument that brings out whatever is sent to me. You can see Youtube videos of me and my work on my site.

L’ART DE LA MODE
Spirit of Africa, Asia and the Caribbean
LONDON FASHION WEEK FEBRUARY 2014

euben P. Joseph created a production that included a diversity of designs and models in celebration of London Fashion Week. L’Art De La Mode, Spirit of Africa, Asia and the Caribbean showcased an eclectic range of designs which took centre stage in a series of spectacular theatrical catwalk extravaganza’s and celebrated breath-taking talents from the collections of following designers: • Erwin Michalec • Réka Orosz • D’ Promise Collection • BomBo Kloth • Mary Martin London • Routes Deesigns • Inonectima • Kwame Koranteng Bespoke • Fée Ushi • Catfixe London • Carnival Costumes This two day extravaganza was scheduled for Sunday 16th February 2014 at the Prestigious Tabernacle, 35 Powis Square, London W11 2AY AT 6:00pm and on the 23rd of February which was the Official London Fashion
Week closing production at the YAA Centre, 1 Chippenham Mews, London W9 2AN at 7:00pm. The talented catwalk choreographer, BEFFTA award winner (Best Art Director) and London Fashion Week expert Reuben P. Joseph fashioned a diverse spectacle that Fashionistas should take note of. He recognises that main stream productions have failed to prominently feature Afro Caribbean and Asian Fashions and Black and Asian models on the runway and feels that that the industry needs to take huge steps to redress the imbalance. Supermodel Naomi Campbell has teamed up with beauty icon Iman and former model-turned-advocate Bethann Hardison to form an advocacy group called “Diversity Coalition” which is taking an unprecedented step to highlight the lack of models of colour on the runway and Reuben P Joseph completely agrees and backs them all the way. Reuben had a few words to say on the subject. “In the fashion industry, as it pertains to black models, black designers, in fact for

most industry professionals, it has taking a long time to not get very far. It is the same in society as a whole, with institutional racism never far from rising its ugly head. But we have to have faith! You don’t need faith unless you’re hoping for something. We, in the industry, are hoping to play on a level playing field. Therefore, hope establishes the goal; faith is the bridge, along with “works”, that gets you to it. I am sure that with everyone working towards a common goal we will get there. Soon rather than later, I hope.” Reuben thanked everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, donating their own time, skills and energy, to make this show happen. Making better mistakes The odd life of an entrepreneur
o I’m watching this movie with the kids called ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’. It’s about a couple who desperately want a child, but can’t. They spend an evening with a bottle of wine dreaming about their perfect child. The next morning a young boy who called himself Timothy, emerges from their garden with leaves on his legs. #odd.
For the purpose of the film of course, they take him at face value, appreciate what seems to be an answer to their prayers and start raising the boy as their own. The film continues to be told from behind the desk of an adoption agency where the 108

couple, describe what it was like raising this boy, who’s no long with them (stay with me), to demonstrate that they could be good parents to another child. Right, so as they’re telling this (unbelievable) story about a boy who appeared out of nowhere with leaves on his legs they fumble over a time when a decision they made with Timothy didn’t go so well. The stern faced woman from the adoption agency then focuses on this and asks them what they learned from that situation. It was a pivotal part of the film because it would demonstrate to the adoption agency how capable these (seemingly crazy) couple would be as parents. Their response to what they’d learned from what had gone wrong was that they would “… learn to make better mistakes, because that’s what parents do…”. At that point I decided to pause the film. “…learn to make better mistakes..? How honest was that? I was in a meeting a few days ago with a very highly regarded media entrepreneur who said that we only ever hear about the

mistakes entrepreneurs have made when they’ve ‘made it’. In the meantime, it’s a closely guarded secret, one which further perpetuates the mystique around today’s entrepreneurs who probably aren’t doing as well as you think they are. But what they are probably doing is making mistakes, lots of them. The question I have pondered on is whether those mistakes are better than the last load of mistakes? Do you make better mistakes or the same ol’ mistakes? You can see that the former, even though a seeming oxymoron makes complete sense – ‘better mistakes’. Further to that, it should even be a mantra, something taught in business schools and embraced by entrepreneurs. Instead we’d rather keep those skeletons in our entrepreneurial closets until our bank balance makes it ok to let them out. I get it though, if you told people about all the mistakes you made they’d consider you incompetent right? Wrong. You ask any experienced business person if they’d rather do business with or invest in someone who’s never made mistake, had
a business fail, or lost a client. I know you still don’t believe me, so go ahead and ask. Answers @theultrapreneur. But if you’re with me, the sensible question is to then work out how to articulate and / or use these mistakes to our advantage so that we make ‘better’ ones in the future. Because one thing is for sure, be it start up entrepreneur or IPO entrepreneur, mistakes ‘will’ be made; get used to it.
Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” It would follow that entrepreneurs being the pioneers of ‘new’ would need to get used to ‘mistakes’. I’m not saying to wear your mistakes on your sleeve but don’t hide them from yourself either. They may just be the odd answer you’re looking for.

n September 1939, like some 800,000 other children during World War II, our mother was evacuated out of London and away from the Blitz. Dispatched by steam train and delivered unceremoniously to a distant family member in a small rural hamlet in Kent, South East England she attempted to blend into country life, while our grandmother stayed behind to take up a full time position at Fortnum and Mason in London’s Piccadilly.

A lady was filling her tank at a gas station, smoking a cigarette, even though all the signs say not to. The fumes that came out of the gas tank ignited, severely burning her hands. But it also lit up her arm, too! Instead of rolling on the ground to put it out, she panicked. She took off running down the street. A police car was at the intersection where it happened and he tried to stop her to put out her arm, but she just kept running and screaming. All the officer could think of doing was to shoot her in the knee. This took everyone by surprise. The officer ran over to her and put the fire out, then called for an ambulance. When questioned about his course of action to stop her, the officer said, “My only thought was to stop her. After all, she was waving a fire-arm.”

New York: As a female shopper exited a convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police had apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, “Yes Officer. That’s her. That’s the lady I stole the purse from.”

Moroccan Argon oil Customer’s feedback: it's absolutely amazing, I use it every two days because my scalp gets dry, it relieves the scalp, smells lovely, my hair looks healthy, shiny and full of body. It is not too greasy like other Argan oils I have used in the past; the bottle is easy to use with spray function that worked very well with my braids. It's a 5 star product absolutely adore it.
