Michael Jackson Date of Birth: August 29, 1958 Date of Death: June 25, 2009 Birth Name: Michael Joseph Jackson MICHAEL JACKSON BIOGRAPHY Biography and images courtesy of LIFETIME TV Website http://www.lifetimetv.co.uk/features/about.

INTRODUCTION

F

irst taking to the stage at the age of just 11 as part of his family’s gig the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson grew quickly into the superstardom which would both reward and plague his life. An apparently unstoppable creative and financial force through the highs of his career, “The King Of Pop” struggled with a confused and turbulent private life that was often made appalling public. In the wake of his shock death though, it is for his artistry and not his controversies that he will be remembered and sadly missed.

EARLY LIFE

Jackson was born 29 August 1958, in Gary, Indiana, to an African-American working-class family. His father, Joseph Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Believing his sons had talent, he moulded them into a musical group in the early 1960s. At first, the Jackson Family performers consisted of Michael’s older brothers Tito, Jermaine, and Jackie. Michael joined his siblings when he was five, and emerged as the group’s lead vocalist. He showed remarkable range and depth for such a young performer, impressing audiences with his ability to convey complex emotions. Older brother Marlon also became a member of the group, which evolved into The Jackson 5.

Michael Jackson as part of the Jackson 5 in 1968.

Behind the scenes, Joseph Jackson pushed his sons to succeed. He was also reportedly known to become violent with them. Michael and his brothers spent endless hours rehearsing and polishing up their act. At first, the Jackson 5 played local gigs and built a strong following. They recorded one single on their own, ‘Big Boy’ with the b-side ‘You’ve Changed’, but it failed to generate much interest.

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE has been reported that Gladys Knight may have been the one to tell Motown founder Berry Gordy about the Jackson 5. Impressed by the group, Gordy signed them to his label in 1968.

EARLY TEENS

Relocating to Los Angeles, Michael and his brothers started work on their music and dancing with their father as their manager. They lived with Gordy and also with Supremes singer Diana Ross when they first arrived there. In August 1969, the Jackson 5 was introduced to the music industry at a special event, and later served as the opening act for the Supremes. Their first album, ‘Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5’, hit the charts in December of that year. It’s first single, ‘I Want You Back’, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1970. More chart-topping singles quickly followed, such as ‘ABC’, ‘The Love You Save’, and ‘I’ll Be There’. At the age of 13, Jackson launched a solo career in addition to his work with the Jackson 5. He made the charts in 1971 with ‘Got to Be There’ from the album of the same name. His 1972 album, ‘Ben’, featured the eponymous ballad about a rat. The song became Jackson’s first solo No. 1 single.

The Jackson 5 moved on to working an opening act for such R&B artists as Gladys Knight and the Pips, James Brown, and Sam and Dave. Many of these performers were signed to the legendary Motown record label, and it 10

Cover Page Feature For several years, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 maintained a busy tour and recording schedule, under the supervision of Berry Gordy and his Motown staff. Gordy wrote many of the songs recorded by the group and by Michael Jackson as a solo artist. The group became so popular that they even had their own self-titled cartoon show, which ran from 1971 to 1973. Despite Jackson’s individual achievements and the group’s great success, there was trouble between the Jacksons and their record company. Tensions mounted between Gordy and Joseph Jackson over the management of his children’s careers, and their level of participation in making their music. The Jacksons wanted more control over their recordings, which led to most of the Jacksons breaking ties with Motown in 1975. Jermaine Jackson remained with the label and continued to pursue a solo career, having previously released several albums— none of which had matched the success of his younger brother Michael.

THE JACKSONS

Now calling themselves the Jacksons, the group signed a new recording deal with Epic Records. With 1978’s ‘Destiny’, Michael Jackson and his brothers (which by now included younger brother Randy) emerged as talented songwriters, penning all of the record’s tracks. Working with producer Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson wowed the music world with his next solo album, 1979’s ‘Off the Wall’. It featured an infectious blend of pop and funk with such hit tracks as the Grammy Award-winning ‘Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough’, ‘Rock with You’, and the title track. He also found success with the ballad ‘She’s Out of My Life’.

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE The overwhelmingly positive response to Michael’s latest solo album also helped buoy the Jacksons’ career as well. ‘Triumph’ (1980) sold more than one million copies, and the brothers went on an extensive tour to support the recording. Jackson, however, began to branch out on his own more. Teaming up with rock legend Paul McCartney, Jackson sang on their 1982 duet, ‘The Girl Is Mine’, which nearly reached the top of the pop charts. The song also appeared on his next solo album, ‘Thriller’ (1982), which generated seven top 10 hits. On a television special honouring Motown, Jackson performed ‘Billie Jean’—eventually a number one hit— and debuted his soon-to-be-famous dance move called the moonwalk. Jackson, a veteran performer by this time, created this step himself and choreographed the dance sequences for the video of his other No. 1 hit, ‘Beat It’.

THRILLER

His most elaborate video, however, was for the album’s title track. John Landis directed the horror-tinged video, which featured complex dance scenes, special effects, and a voice-over done by actor Vincent Price. The video for ‘Thriller’ became immensely popular, boosting sales for the already successful album. It stayed on the charts for 80 weeks, holding the No. 1 spot for 37 weeks. In addition to its unparalleled commercial achievements, Thriller earned 12 Grammy Award nominations and won eight of those awards. Jackson’s Grammy victories showcased the diverse nature of his work. For his songwriting talents, he received the Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Song for Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

single for USA for Africa. A veritable who’s who of music stars participated in the project including Lionel Ritchie, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, and Tina Turner.

At the top of his game creatively and commercially, Jackson signed a $5 million endorsement deal with Pepsi-Cola around this time. He, however, was badly injured while filming a commercial for the soda giant in 1984, suffering burns to his face and scalp. Jackson had surgery to repair his injuries, and is believed to have begun experimenting with plastic surgery around this time. His face, especially his nose, would become dramatically altered in the coming years.

Releasing his follow-up to Thriller in 1987, Jackson reached the top of the charts with ‘Bad’. It featured five No. 1 hits, including ‘Man in the Mirror’, ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, and the title track, which was supported by a video directed by Martin Scorsese. Jackson spent more than a year on the road, playing concerts to promote the album. While successful, Bad was unable to duplicate the phenomenal sales of Thriller.

That same year, Jackson embarked on his final tour with the Jacksons to the support the album ‘Victory’. The one major hit from the recording was Michael Jackson’s duet with Mick Jagger, ‘State of Shock’. In 1985, Jackson showed his altruistic side, co-writing and singing on ‘We Are the World’, a charity

Raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, Jackson was a shy and quiet person off-stage. He was never truly comfortable with the media attention he received and rarely gave interviews. By the late 1980s, Jackson had created his own fantasy retreat—a California ranch called Neverland. There he kept exotic pets, such as

He sometimes opened up the ranch for children’s events. Rumours swirled around him, including that he was lightening the colour of his skin to appear more white and slept in a special chamber to increase his life span.

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE Jackson emerged later that year. A 13-yearold boy claimed that the music star had fondled him. Jackson was known to have sleepovers with boys at his Neverland Ranch, but this was the first public charge of wrongdoing. The police searched the ranch, but they found no evidence to support the claim. The following year, Jackson settled the case out of court with the boy’s family. Other allegations emerged, but Jackson maintained his innocence.

MATRIMONIES

In 1991, Jackson released ‘Dangerous’, featuring the hit ‘Black or White’. The video for this song included an appearance by child star Macaulay Culkin, and was directed by John Landis. In the video’s final minutes, Jackson caused some controversy with his sexual gesturing and violent actions. Many were surprised to see the Peter Pan-like Jackson act in this manner. Jackson’s music continued to enjoy widespread popularity in the upcoming years. In 1993, he performed several important events, including the half-time show at Superbowl XXVII. Jackson gave a rare television interview, which aired that February. Sitting down with Oprah Winfrey, he explained that the change in his skin tone was the result of a disease known as Vitiligo. Jackson also opened about the abuse he suffered from his father. Allegations of child molestation against

In August 1994, Jackson announced that he had married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of rock icon Elvis Presley. The couple gave a joint television interview with Diane Sawyer, but the union proved to be short-lived. They divorced in 1996. Some thought that the marriage was a publicity ploy to restore Jackson’s image after the molestation allegations. Later that same year, Jackson wed nurse Debbie Rowe. The couple had two children through artificial insemination. Son Prince Michael Jackson was born in 1997 and daughter Paris Michael Jackson was born in 1998. Rowe and Jackson divorced in 1999 with Jackson receiving full custody of their two children. He would go on to have a third child, Prince Michael Jackson II, with an unknown surrogate. Jackson’s musical career began to decline with the lukewarm reception to 1995’s ‘HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I’, which featured some of his earlier hits as well as new material. The record spawned two hits, ‘You Are Not Alone’ and his duet with sister Janet Jackson, ‘Scream’. ‘Scream’ earned Michael and Janet a Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Short Form that year. Cover Page Feature Another track from the album, ‘They Don’t Care About Us’, however, brought Jackson intense criticism for using an anti-Semitic term.

ECCENTRIC

By the release of 2001’s ‘Invincible’, Jackson was better known as an eccentric whose quirks were reported in the tabloids than as a performer. The album sold well, but stories of his odd behaviour started to overshadow his talent. He often appeared in public wearing a surgical mask, and he hid his children’s faces under veils. In 2002, Jackson made headlines when he seemed confused and disoriented on stage at an MTV awards show. Soon after, he received enormous criticism for dangling his son, Prince Michael II, over a balcony while greeting fans in Berlin, Germany. In a later interview, Jackson explained that “We were waiting for thousands of fans down below, and they were chanting they wanted to see my child, so I was kind enough to let them see. I was doing something out of innocence.” But many were unforgiving of the star’s behaviour, with former fans and media outlets clamouring to have Child Protective Services take Jackson’s children from him. Jackson’s reputation was served another blow in 2003 with the television documentary, ‘Living with Michael Jackson’. British journalist Martin Bashir spent several months with Jackson, and he got Jackson to discuss his relationships with children. He admitted that he continued to have children sleepover at his ranch, even after the 1993 allegations. Jackson said that sometimes he slept with the children in his bed. “Why 14

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE can’t you share your bed? That’s the most loving thing to do, to share your bed with someone,” Jackson told Beshir. Jackson faced more legal woes in 2004 when he was arrested on charges related to incidents with a 13-year-old boy the previous year. Facing 10 counts in all, he was charged with lewd conduct with a minor, attempted lewd conduct, administering alcohol to facilitate molestation, and conspiracy to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion. The resulting 2005 trial was a media circus with fans, detractors, and camera crews surrounding the courthouse. More than 130 people testified, including Macaulay Culkin who appeared on Jackson’s behalf. He said that he had been friends with Jackson as a young teen. While he had stayed over at the Neverland Ranch, he told the court that Jackson never tried to molest him. Jackson’s accuser also appeared via videotape and described how Jackson had given him wine and molested him. On 14 June 2005, Jackson was acquitted of all charges. His reputation, however, was effectively destroyed, and his finances were in shambles. Thanks to mounting legal bills, the singer no longer had a bank account and was unable to maintain even his most basic finances. Jackson soon found refuge in his friendship with the prince of Bahrain, Prince Salman Bin Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, who wired Jackson the money needed to pay Neverland’s utility bills. He then invited the pop star to his country as a personal guest. In Bahrain, the prince provided Jackson with more than $7 million, not including living expenses. He also built the singer a recording studio, hired him a “motivational guru” and helped Jackson to entertain family

Cover Page Feature at Christmas. In return, Jackson promised to collaborate with the prince on a new album on Al-Khalifa’s record label, as well as write an autobiography, and create a stage play. None of the work materialised, however, and Jackson soon faced litigation from his friend for reneging on his promises. In even greater financial straits, Jackson defaulted on the $23.5 million loan owed on his Neverland Ranch in 2008. Unable to part with certain items, including the crystal gloves he used in performances, Jackson sued to block the auction of some of his personal items from the home the following year.

THIS IS IT

Around this same time, the largely reclusive Jackson announced that he would be performing a series of concerts in London as his “final curtain call.” There had been some speculation regarding whether the fragile singer would be able to handle the rigors of 50 concerts. Despite all of the allegations and stories of odd behaviour, Jackson remained a figure of great interest, as demonstrated by the strong response to his concert plans; set to appear at the O2 Arena in London, England, beginning 8 July 2009, Jackson saw all the tickets to his ‘This Is It’ tour sell out in only four hours.

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE But Jackson would never get to experience the success of his comeback tour. On 25 June 2009, Jackson suffered cardiac arrest in his Los Angeles home. He was rushed to the hospital after his heart stopped and CPR attempts failed, but he died later that morning. He was 50-years-old at the time of his death. News of Jackson’s death resulted in an outpouring of public grief and sympathy. Memorials to Jackson were erected around the world, including one at the arena where he was set to perform and another at his childhood home in Gary, Indiana. On 12 July 2009, a televised memorial was held for fans of the King of Pop at the Staples Centre in downtown Los Angeles. While 17,500 free tickets were issued to fans via lottery, more than an estimated one billion viewers watched the memorial on television and the Internet. The Jackson family held a private funeral on 3 September 2009, for the immediate family and 200 guests at Forest Lawn Memorial park in Los Angeles. The celebrity mourners included former child star Macaulay Culkin, ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley, and actress Elizabeth Taylor. A film documenting Jackson’s preparations for his final performance entitled ‘This Is It’, hit theatres in October of 2009. The film, featuring a compilation of interviews, rehearsals and backstage footage of Michael Jackson, made $23 million in its opening weekend and sky-rocketed to No. 1 at the box office. ‘This Is It’ would go on to make more than $260.8 million worldwide, and become the highest grossing documentary of all time. Cover Page Feature But in February 2010, the coroner released an official report detailing the cause of Jackson’s death. The results revealed that the singer died from “acute propofol intoxication.” The overdose worked in combination with a number of other sedatives to shut down the star’s weakened heart. Jackson reportedly used the drugs, with the aid of personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, to help him sleep in the evenings. He was also reported to have a dependency on the painkiller, demerol and may have been taking sedatives to help him withdraw from the drug. Conrad later told police that he believed Jackson had developed a particular addiction to propofol, which Jackson referred to as his “milk”. He had the drug administered by I.V. in the evenings in 50 mg dosages, and Murray was attempting to wean the pop star off the drug at the time of Jackson’s death. A police investigation revealed that Murray was not licensed to prescribe most controlled drugs in the state of California. The steps he took to save Jackson also came under scrutiny, as evidence showed that the standard of care for administering propofol was not met, and the recommended equipment for patient monitoring, precision dosing and resuscitation were not present. As a result, Jackson’s death was ruled a homicide, and Murray found himself at the centre of an involuntary manslaughter investigation. The Jackson family also began pursuing measures that would have Murray’s medical license revoked. The family is in continuing litigation with Murray. Meanwhile, the Jackson family has attempted to move forward with their lives. As dictated in his will, Jackson’s children were placed in the care of their grandmother, Katherine Jackson. arch 31, 2014 — New York, NY — On May 12, Epic Records, in conjunction with the Estate of Michael Jackson, will release XSCAPE, an album of new music by the internationally beloved music icon and King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The project features eight new tracks, which the world will be hearing for the very first time on the new album. For the ultimate fan experience, XSCAPE will also be available in a Deluxe Edition, which includes all of the sourced Michael Jackson recordings in their original form. The XSCAPE standard and Deluxe Edition’s are available for pre-order beginning April 1 on iTunes.com/MichaelJackson and elsewhere, and available at all retailers worldwide on May 12. XSCAPE is executive produced by Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Cover Page Feature Reid curated the final list of recordings to deliver to the producers, who retooled the production to add a fresh, contemporary sound that retains Jackson’s essence and integrity. It’s a process Reid calls “contemporizing.” The album’s lead producer, Timbaland was one of a handful of producers Reid believed had the gravitas, depth and range to creatively engage with Jackson’s work. Additional producers include global hitmakers Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome “Jroc” Harmon and John McClain. “Modern music and artistry would look and sound completely different if not for the groundbreaking contributions Michael Jackson gifted to the world,” remarked L.A. Reid. “Michael left behind some musical performances that we take great pride in presenting through the vision of music producers that he either worked directly with or expressed strong desire to work with. We are extremely proud and honored to present this music to the world.” The title of this album honors Michael’s album naming process. He always chose a song from the album to name his projects and, beginning with THRILLER, used only one word titles, each with an edgy quality to them. This is true of the new project. Written by Michael Jackson and Jerkins, and produced by Jackson and Jerkins, “Xscape” has further significance in that it is the one track on the album that was ‘contemporized’ by the producer who recorded it originally in the studio with Michael.

In conjunction with the release of XSCAPE, Epic / Sony Music will launch an unprecedented global campaign with the One Sony sister companies, Sony Corporation, Sony Mobile Communications, and Sony Network Entertainment International drawing from all of Sony’s strengths and consumer reach. "Michael has long been a treasured member of the larger Sony family," said Kazuo Hirai, President and CEO, Sony Corporation. "Starting with the release of ‘Off The Wall’ in 1979, Sony Music Entertainment has since released all of Michael’s recordings. We are thrilled and privileged to be collaborating as One Sony to celebrate Michael’s latest legacy, and bringing his fans an exclusive experience through our upcoming initiatives with our products and services." his month we pay tribute to the King of Pop – Michael Jackson. Therefore, Panache e-Magazine was honored to be introduced to a very talented artist: David Jordan, who is currently singing the songs of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 in the theatre production “Thriller Live” at the Lyric Theatre. Thriller Live is presented by the Flying Music Company in association with Adrian Grant. It is a splendid theatrical spectacular concert created to celebrate the career of the world’s greatest entertainer, Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 and is described as “a non-stop jukebox musical packed with glorious music, glamorous costumes and gritty performances. The evergreen hits like ABC, I Want You Back, Dangerous, Black or White, The Love You Save, Beat It, The Way You Make Me Feel, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You and the title song- Thriller, gets you out of your seats singing along the historical tunes and roaring with great zeal”. (Source: theatreticketsdirect.co.uk)

The show is ultimately a celebration of one of the most influential musicians in history and really showcases the musician’s legacy. Charismatic singer; David Jordan, (born David Keith Arratoon) looks very much like Michael Jackson. In the spring of 2012 he signed contracts for the lead male dancer and lead vocalist as the great King of Pop in “Thriller Live” and debuted on July 29, 2012. Two years later, Jordan continues to enjoy the task of imitating Jackson’s dance moves and maintaining his high vocal standards. However, Jordan also has quite a personal tale to tell and here shares his life story with Panache readers. It’s a story well worth reading.

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE Tell us about your early years. “Well my Mum was from Montserrat and my Dad was from Calcutta. A good mix I’d say. I’m proud of my heritage. I was a shy boy, living in my own little world. I liked to keep myself to myself but for some unknown reason, the other kids at school loved to bully me. Maybe it was because I had funny hair, as I used to wear braids in those days or maybe it was because I walked funny. Who knows, but the little f****rs wanted me to conform into their little packs but I wasn’t having it. Determined not to conform, I was able to meet other kids who had the same interests as me and soon developed a clique of friends who felt comfortable and liberated around me. I used to dream that one day I would become a star and show those little f****rs that despite their bullying, I would make it big and tour the world whilst they would be working in MacDonald’s. How wonderful it would be to see their envious faces.”

I also discovered James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Cab Calloway, Guns N’ Roses, Prince and Lenny Kravitz and also cultivated an interest in Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.” How did your parents feel about your choice of friends? “Unfortunately, when I was 11, my parents split up. I begun to immerse myself into my song writing and at the age of 12, I was soon putting tracks together in my local studios. I made a choice to live with my grandmother in Enfield until I moved into my own council flat in Finchley at the age of 16. My friends still hung around but ultimately as time went by, we fizzled out.”

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE 16 is an early age to have your own flat. How did you get on? “As a young teenager, I seemed to manage. I associated myself with a group of young hopefuls that coincidently were signed to Simon Fuller’s 19 management company. At that time, the young Amy Winehouse was on the scene and we became really great friends. I became obsessed with songwriting and managed to gain a record deal with my producer friend Jack Freegard at Fortress Studios in Old Street whilst juggling my studies at Drama College during the day and working at Starbucks in New Oxford Street in the evening.

The world was my oyster, and the opportunities seemed to come in thick and fast. I found myself singing as a guest vocal on a track that happened to be published by ZTT’s Trevor Horn and Jill Sinclair who

Exclusive Interview immediately recognized that they had unearthed a special talent and offered me the chance to build on my demo tapes whilst putting together a scintillating live band. The success was colossal, and I had the world at my feet.” How did you cope with your success at such a young age? “Oh it was wonderful at first, or so I thought. I was signed to a major record company and had a string of hits. I had become a star overnight. I made half a million at the age of 21/ 22, I had a beautiful house, lots of friends, doors were always open, attended a lot of red carpet events, people liked me, people slept with me , they just wanted to be close to me to feel some of that specialness that I had running through me. It was nice for a few years. I toured with Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias and few others. I lived like a prince!!! It was beautiful but NOT REAL it was plastic, fake. I had everything but I felt very alone. I could have anything that I could ever want but nothing satisfied me or brought me true happiness. I felt very sad and unfulfilled. Then, the record company bosses branded me a “wild child” and disappointed after only selling over one hundred thousand copies of my album “Set the mood”, decided not to renew my contract. They literally chewed me up and spat me out. That was hard to deal with. The World I had become accustomed to was slowly falling apart. I realised how USED I felt. All of a sudden my phone calls were not answered nor did they call me. Members of my own team walked out on me. I felt vulnerable and weak and

Michael Jackson TRIBUTE to top it all, my manager at the time stole my last drop of money £50,000 and I was left with the heartbreaking decision to sell my house and all my possessions, especially my cats that I loved so dearly.” Those must have been devastating times, how did you recover? “Out of all of this came true blessings. I was completely broken, but realised that I had to build myself back up again. At the time, I thought that I would die. I thought that my life was over. I had nothing to my name and no money to buy food. I couldn’t provide and look after my family like before. Diamonds and expensive gifts were the norm but this turn of events had left me homeless. I couldn’t believe it and went on a downward spiral which led to me taking drugs to numb the pain of disappointment. I wanted to die. Then at my lowest, after much soul searching, something within me changed. I realised that I had my name; “David Jordan” who, at the early age of 26 had achieved a lot and probably set my goals too high. I began to realise how special I was. Even if I had not fulfilled all of those dreams and lost them. I am a much better person today than I had ever been and happy to be alive. I am a much better person today without all that plastic shit. I realise now how special I am.” What advice would you give to a young up and coming star of today? “I would tell them to always be careful what they wish for. I followed the path to being rich and famous but it was ever so lonely and you face the prospect of becoming a puppet for an industry that is disgusting and full of sharks! It’s hard to deal with. I was lucky that the Universe, GOD, made me realise in time what I was really meant to do, and that Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

looking, his behaviour became more bizarre, and he was mocked and derided in the media.

Nightclub goers have been boogying to Jacko since the 60s, and millions of people have tried to imitate his iconic dance moves - with varying degrees of success, look at Usher for example.

After he died, the tributes poured in. I watched my mum fight tears during his memorial concert. Several of the parents from his trials admitted to trying to extort money. But while he was alive, he was a troubled man.

He even inadvertently invented the cliché of the crazy former child star.

Some people would say sympathy is wasted on a man with enough money falling out of his arse to turn his home into a private Disneyland. We can’t know what was going on in his head, but he had such an impact on so many people’s lives, and if he died thinking those people had turned on him, it’s a great shame.

The tragedy of Michael Jackson was about more than his premature death though. In a way, his entire life, since being the adorable 8-year-old kid in the Jackson 5, was a drawn out model of celebrity culture’s build-em-up, then knock-em-down cycle. An idol for three decades, around the turn of the century Michael was dogged by allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards children. He beat all the charges, but for the rest of his life, he lived as a parody of himself, an easy punch line for comedians and satirists. His child-like approach to life became the subject of ridicule. He grew gaunt and unhealthy26

But the world still loved Michael Jackson. A lot of the jokes were probably intended as good-natured ribbing, and when he died he was weeks away from starting a sell-out world tour.

Michael Jackson was a beautiful singer, and a beautiful soul. It’s too bad it took his death for us to remember that. At least, like with all the greats, his spirit lives on through his music.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY

HAPPY FATHERS DAY The History of Fathers Day

F

By Kris Sookma

athers’ Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. It is a day set aside to honour fathers everywhere, whether they are the new father of a baby who is too young to say thank you by themselves, the proud patriarch of a young family, or the father of grown children who have flown the nest but still choose to remember him on that day. Whether he is a foster or adoptive father, a step father or simply a beloved father-figure, a Dad, a Daddy or a Father, this is the day to show him how much he means. Fathers’ Day was first celebrated in the US in 1910, when a woman called Sonora Dodd decided that fathers should be shown the same appreciation as mothers, who had been officially celebrated in the US on Mothers’ Day since 1870. The tradition on which Mothers’ Day was based could be traced back to ancient Greece, with Mothering Sunday having been used as an opportunity to give gifts and a break from work to mothers in Europe since the 16th century. Mothers had traditionally been the main caregivers, who looked after the family and took care of the home. They were often underappreciated and hard-worked, as demonstrated by the proverb “a woman’s work is never done”.

30

JUNE 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Mrs Dodd believed that her father deserved the same show of appreciation, having raised six children alone. Although Fathers’ Day was often seen as less important than Mothers’ Day, and considered by some to be just a commercial enterprise, the changing role of the father in family life means that they are equally as deserving of a show of appreciation as our mothers. Fathers are no longer the stern head of the family who goes out to work and rarely spends any time with his children. Fathers’ Day is a chance to thank your father for everything he has done for you. Giving him a card and a gift basket is a great way of doing this, particularly when you can’t be there in person, while taking over the chores or giving him breakfast in bed can be a way of getting him to relax when you do share the same home. Let him take the day off and treat himself for once. For many people Fathers’ Day is an important chance to set aside some time to spend with their father, whether this means having a special meal together or taking him out for the day. Not everyone can make it on the day, but sending a card or calling him up can let him know that you are thinking of him.

Living

Life

Fathers will always appreciate the personal touch, so a handmade card or fathers day gift basket is always going to be special. Older children and adults tend to show their appreciation with a bought gift. The best thing which a father can receive is something that shows how much care and thought has gone into choosing it. A personal gift that appeals to his particular likes and interests will really serve the purpose of Fathers’ Day- demonstrating his importance in the lives of his children. If he has a special hobby or he enjoys a certain sort of chocolate, or there is something you know he has had his eye on for a while then you can get him something you know he will appreciate. If you are having trouble finding something, or you live too far away to deliver it in person, then the internet can offer some more options. Everyone enjoys getting a surprise delivery, and unwrapping the parcel to discover something wonderful inside. One thing that confuses many people who are writing their cards is how exactly the day should be written. Where does the apostrophe go? “Fathers” is just the plural of father, “Father’s Day” means the day belonging to a particular father, and “Fathers’ Day” means the day belonging to fathers in general. Father’s Day is probably the most common spelling, although Fathers’ Day may be more technically correct.

y Intention was to submit an altogether different article but the subject of fatherhood got me thinking....about the father of my children. As a single parent, it would be all too easy to concentrate on the sleepless nights, penny pinching, the loneliness and the stigma of children living In a fatherless home. However there Is another side to the single parent scenario. Talking to friends and family most fathers who do not live with their children are irresponsible, worthless and deserve no contact with them I must admit this was my initial reaction. I hated my ex husband for the pain I felt and didn’t want him anywhere near me or my children. However deep down I knew he loved our children and wanted to be around them. After deep thought, I decided to give him unlimited access to the children. I knew they would need their father, especially being boys.

around them. My brothers promised to be there for them, but they had their own families. I knew however much they cared they couldn’t be there the way the children needed them to be. Although I met men along my journey, they were definitely not positive role models. God Is good though. I watched my ex husband slowly embrace the fact that he was a father. We started communicating, making decisions together. I could talk to him about my concerns and we learned to pull together. Doctors and school appointments were attended together. For at least 15 years I had every other weekend to myself. We shared summer holidays and alternated Christmases.

At first, he resisted my attempts to communicate. We had argued, we were both hurting - he thought I was up to something, that I had an agenda. Even after we started talking it was to take about 3 years before we started pulling together as parents. I learned to separate my feelings as an ex partner and concentrated on being a mother to my children. Part of that role was to make sure they had the right male influences

of your life. Single mothers if your children do not see their father I encourage you to examine your reasons and see if they are valid. Fathers cannot be replaced however hard we may try.

I agree that the ideal would be for him to have been there physically with my children over the years; I also agree there will be some sort of impact of him being absent, but I have heard stories of fathers being absent, mothers using the children as pawns and long drawn out court battles.

May God bless all fathers and inspire them to be the best they can be x

After 17 years my children know their father, they know he loves them and they love him in return. I am counting my blessings because things could have been worse. Today I am the proud mother of two young men. One is a successful musician and the other is studying criminology at university. I would love to take all the credit, but their father did have a positive Input in their lives.

Ashley performing at a BBC weekender

Everyone has their own story and we all have our opinion on what makes a good father. Some fathers are present physically but absent spiritually, some are absent physically but present In spirit and God help the children who have no idea who their father is or If he exists. Today I salute all fathers. Those who are present In mind and body, those who wish they could be present but circumstances mean they can’t be. To those who don’t seem to care you are missing out on the single most phenomenal experience

nfortunately, my experience of having a father is tinged with sadness as he passed away when I was very young. I really can’t remember that much about him and therefore, can only fantasise about what a perfect father would be like. Now that I am a parent with a young child, I am able to witness fatherhood through the actions of the fathers I interact with nowadays. The role of a father has changed. There was a time when they were seen as distant figures, who only saw their children at weekends and during the school holidays. They were absent at the school gates and the mothers were always there to represent. Now I have recently noticed that there is a clear refreshing shift happening and there is an equal balance of both mothers and fathers. They are now seizing the opportunity to be more involved with their children’s activities and daily life. I’m finding this shift to be really refreshing and therefore, as my contribution to Panache e-Magazine’s celebration of Father’s Day, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the dads out there, who are part of this new mind-set a wonderful and special day.

The qualities of a Father are: • Someone who would always listen to you no matter what; • Someone who will be so strong that he could pick you up when you’re little and throw you around and always be sure to catch you; • Someone who doesn’t mind being punched in the stomach, or at least they pretend not to; • Someone who could pitch the tent in the middle of Snowdonia even against all the elements and make us feel so safe whilst we sit and wait for out temporary home. • Someone who would sometimes cook us a meal but make it into a special event; • Someone who would always be the first to investigate a bump in the night, with us creeping behind him out of curiosity, but feeling safe, because he will protect us no matter what. • Someone who will always be proud of your triumphs but also be strong when things go wrong. Irrespective of my romantic notion, present or not, fathers play a very strong role in our lives, because the fact is that there is no doubt that without one we would not be here.

ill shouted, “GET BACK!” to the crowd as he threw the Molotov at the now leaking petrol. We started running. Not from the police, but from fear of getting blown up by the soon to be, exploding car. I remember running and thinking if the police were chasing us, they would catch a lot of people before they got me! My adrenalin was on high and after all, I was an athlete! By the time I got to the end of Barnwell road most of the crowd had stopped running after realising that the police were not chasing anymore and were on their way back to the scene of the burning car. I had already had that experience; therefore, saw no reason to go back there. Our stomping ground at that time was the “George Canning” pub on Acre Lane which as it happens was only about 100 yards from where I had stopped running. I decided to see who, if anyone was there. When I got there, I saw many of the usual crowd; however, this was not a usual night. The excitement in the air was palpable. They were all trying to tell the story of their experience; what they had seen and what they had done. I listened, but I didn’t feel the need to tell anyone that I had just participated

in turning someone’s motor vehicle into a burnt out wreck. After ordering a drink and putting a marker on the pool table, I sat down with one of my friends who lived in Brixton and could tell me what “really happened”, (at least from his perspective). He told me that earlier in the day Michael Bailey, who was one of my best friends brother, had been stabbed and that the police had stopped him while he was running away, but although they saw that he was bleeding, they did nothing to help so the youths took the situation into their hands and got him away from the police and to hospital. Then the police, as is their usual tactic, sent in more police into an already volatile situation and things kicked off. As I said before, riots aren’t necessarily planned, sometimes they just happen. He told me that he had seen many of our friends caught by the police, some were involved in the riot, others just happened to be in the vicinity which is why he decided to move a safe distance away, to the pub. Later on other people passed by with the fruits of their “Labours”. I saw a friend with a

Body Fitness Tips by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

W

e hope last month’s health tips were helpful, so here are more health tips to help you with your exercise routine. We all want to be fit, lose weight and look good so let’s put these tips into action and look forward to being much healthier. So Go forward and be healthy:

HEALTH:

Thinking of embarking on a detox diet to boost your health and aid weight loss? Before you do, it’s time to cleanse you of the concept that we need to be periodically detoxified. Strict diets might claim to rid your system of toxins, but your body already does that job for you: working to break down what goes in, absorb the good and excrete the not so good. The body is already capable of detoxing itself, of health, Given that 100% of people are exposed to toxins through food, water, pesticides, cleaning products, pollution, and loads of invisible environmental toxins on a daily basis, it is safe to assume that all of 56

us are, on some level, toxic. Doctors claim that the body is capable of eliminating these toxins effectively without the aid of a detox program

EXERCISE:

Skin, more than any other organ in the body, experiences continuous changes throughout life. These changes start at the cellular level and later are reflected on the skin surface in texture, and in the skin’s ability to renew itself after injury or procedures. In a life cycle, skin exists in two different states: Active and Inactive. The skin is the body’s largest organ and plays a large part in helping the body stay healthy, through perspiration. Working up a sweat helps your internal organs stay cool by lowering your overall body temperature and aids with the removal of toxins from the body through the skin. So if you want a quick ‘detox’ fix, try sweating it out at the gym.

NUTRITION:

Restricting your food consumption limits intake of energy and important nutrients needed for good health, which can cause unhealthy side effects such as headaches, dizziness and low energy. Humans are

The Dangers of Detox complex organisms that need nutrients to sustain the bodily requirements in order to have health and function properly and food is the most essential requirement for human survival as it is a substance that is either eaten or drunk to supply nourishment to the body or for pleasure purposes. The required nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins or minerals found in food that comes from other living organisms such as plants and animals or products, produce energy, replenish old cells, stimulate growth and keep homeostatic life. If you want to achieve optimal results then the best approach is a balanced diet containing a variety of brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, plenty of whole grains, lean meat and fish (or vegetarian alternatives) and low-fat dairy products.

he Ethiopian Revolution that toppled the Haile Selassie Monarchy was known as The Fall of the Derg Regime https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=IILN3Kujo6Y I was one of many honoured to be invited to this grand event and be able to meet the grandson of the great Haile Selassie, H. I. H. Prince Aklile Berhan Makonmen Haile Selassie Of Ethiopia who attended the said event at the Embassy of Ethiopia on Thursday 5th June 2014 for The 23rd Anniversary of the Fall of the Derg. The whole event was held on the grounds of the Embassy’s rear garden in a lovely marquee where all the guest were entertained by traditional dancers. We were able to have a taste of Ethiopia’s wonderful

dishes, one was even able to have a choice of Ethiopian Beers and other drinks. His Excellency Ambassador Mr Berhanu Kebede, Embassy of Federal Republic of Ethiopia was a fantastic host making sure everyone was well looked after as a number of presentations went on, highlighting the presence of H.E. Ambassador Mr. Khaled Al-Duwaisan G.C.V.O. Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and other notable high level guest who all came out to celebrate with Ethiopia on The 23rd Anniversary of the Fall of the Derg.‫‏‬ The 23rd Anniversary of the Fall of the Derg. On September 12th, 1974 the Military Coordinating Committee (Derg) proclaimed itself as the Provisional Military Administration Council (PMAC) and took over the state and government power. At the end of 1974, to weaken and eliminate the major opposition groups in the urban centres, the Derg sent all university and high school students and teachers to rural areas on what was called “Development Through Cooperation Campaign” - Zamacha. During the revolution, the Derg fulfilled its main slogan of “Land to the Tiller” by redistributing land once belonging to Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

landlords to the peasant tilling the land. Mismanagement, corruption, and general hostility to the Derg’s violent rule was coupled with the draining effects of constant warfare with the separatist guerrilla movements in Eritrea and Tigray resulting in a drastic fall in general productivity of food and cash crops. Although Ethiopia is prone to chronic droughts, no one was prepared for the scale of drought and famine that struck the country in the mid-1980s, in which up to seven million may have died. Hundreds of thousands fled economic misery, conscription, and political repression, and went to live in neighbouring countries and all over the Western world, creating an Ethiopian Diaspora for the first time. Insurrections against Communist rule sprang up particularly in the northern regions of Tigray and Eritrea. Hundreds of thousands were killed as a result of the Red Terror, forced deportations, or from the use of hunger as a weapon under Mengistu’s rule. The Derg continued its attempts to end the rebellions with military force. They initiated several campaigns against both internal rebels and the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front, the most important ones being Operation Shiraro, Operation Lash, Operation Red Star, and Operation Adwa which led to its decisive defeat in the Battle of Shire 15–19 February 1989. The Mengistu government was finally toppled by his own officials and a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), in

60

1991 after their bid for a push on the capital Addis Ababa became successful. There was some fear that Mengistu would fight to the bitter end for the capital, but after diplomatic intervention by the United States, Mengistu fled to an asylum in Zimbabwe, where he still resides. The EPRDF immediately disbanded the Workers’ Party of Ethiopia (the political arm of the Derg), and arrested almost all of the prominent Derg officials shortly after. In December 2006, 72 officials of the Derg were found guilty of genocide. Thirty-four people were in court, 14 others have died during the lengthy process and 25, including Mengistu, were tried in absentia. The London Conference was attended by the Derg, Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), but the Derg officials withdrew from the end of the meeting after hearing the news that Mengistu Haile Mariam fled to Zimbabwe. The Mengistu regime was finally deposed.

W

ole Sentimenta Bio : Mayowa Oluwole aka Wole Sentimenta is a Nigerian born Afro musician born in July 26, 1983 from the family of the late Chief Samuel Ayilara Mayowa in Ile-Ife, Osun state Nigeria. He studied mass communication in The Polytechnic Ibadan and started studying music as a young child at the age of eleven and formed the Da Uptimist Band of 9 members in July 27th, 2008 who had a lot of fun playing afro, high live and jazz music. Lekan Olujinmi interviews the man himself Mayowa Oluwole aka Wole Sentimenta How long have you been producing Afro Beat songs? I started music as a child as early as 11 years old, I majored in Afro Music in 1997 After Fetshita Gospel Award. I was given the youngest best African musician of the year Award. What instruments do you tend to play? I major in drums but theoretically I can sequence on all instruments. I tell my musicians what to play on their instruments to most of my songs, both on stage and in the studio.

How do you feel having an international recording contract with Tate Music Group? I felt great cos it's one of those things I have always aspired to achieve in this career, especially being an American record label. It’s a great edge for me, cos it will quicken me achieving my dream in the entertainment industry internationally. Have you ever toured or performed in the West - Europe, America etc.? No, I've not travelled to Europe and America for music tour but for other businesses. I've always been on African Nations tour, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, Kotonu to name but a few. How many band members do you tend to perform with Wole Sentimenta & The Uptimist Band? Professionally, including my dancers is 11 without dancers 9 members Tell the people what kind of relationship you have with the family of the Founder, Father & Icon of Afro Beat Baba Fela Anikulapo-Kuti by the way of Femi Anikulapo-Kuti &Seun Anikulapo-Kuti ? To be honest with you, I've no relationship with Baba Fela Anikulapo family. In fact I've not met any of his children before. I

remember I spoke with Seun Kuti once on phone when I wanted to record Well-well, he said he was in Morocco then working on his own Album too. And that was the last time, but I've performed in the shrine a couple of times. How do your parents feel about you being an Afro Beat performer? Well, I never grew up with them. I grew up in Akure, Ondo state with my Eldest brother cos I'm the last born of the family. But my brother has never wanted me to be a musician. but when he later saw me after I graduated from school and I've worked with about three corporate organizations, (African Alliance, Nigeria Brewery, United Bank for Africa UBA) before I finally majored in music, he felt impressed by my commitment and the outcome of what I'm doing for myself. Guess what? He has become my special adviser now, he has been so supportive morally and he gave me a car. Have you always wanted to be a performer in the entertainment industry? I had two professions in mind when I was 5; I told my mum that I wanted to become a soldier or musician. They were not too pleased with these two careers I chose for myself, saying all your mates dreams to be Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Bankers and Pilots. All you choose to do is carrying gun or become (Alagbe) meaning (someone that sings begging for money). Just like I said earlier, I did all they wanted but non worked for me, I worked in the bank yet I wasn't fulfilled but Music paved my way to greatness now. Do you think that your music will help to uplift the people in Africa and around the world and why?

Yes, because I didn't just jump at this career, I've always seen myself as a positive vessel to make this world a better place to live in, that is why I chose to do music that is inspirational, situational and timeless. Tell us what you wish to do alongside your music i.e. do you Act, Dance or have any interest of hobbies? There are lots of plans in my head, creative and lucrative ideas in entertainment, like African Discovery, Rear Talent Hunts, African Breeze Festival and many more. Although I do write stories too and I used to act when I was in secondary school but I never can tell if I would love to act in the future because I've never seen acting as part of my dream. Thank you Mayowa Oluwole aka Wole Sentimenta h t t p : / / w w w. t a t e m u s i c g r o u p . c o m / epk/?id=29797&page=home I would love to have your feedback. l.olujinmi@googlemail.com

A

s we approach the halfway point of the year, it will be an understatement to say that the year so far has been exciting. A lot has taken place and as we have a mid-year recap, we look back at the events that have shaped the year so far. We countdown below from the mysterious to the downright bizarre news that has surrounded the first half of this year.

Selfie Olympics

to join in the game of making the most dangerous and outlandish selfie ever and to then post it on social media. The #SelfieOlympics saw some of the most bizarre and in some instances, creative selfies. It was banned shortly after across all social networks after a teen attempted to hang upside down from his bathroom door and landed on his neck. Tributes poured in dubbing him the #SelfieGawd

Missing Malaysian Airline

Till this point, the whereabouts of Malaysia Airline MH370 is still unknown. The airline mysteriously disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March 2014. Malaysian authorities, assisted by international aviation and satellite experts, are now battling to piece together the plane's final hours in the hope that they can find its wreckage and explain what happened to its 239 passengers and crew. We hope that the mystery is solved by the end of the year.

The 2014 Russian Olympics earlier this year was an inspiration to the online trend known as the Selfie Olympics. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter users were asked 76

Oh What A Half Year It has Been! Bring Back Our Girls

Prior to the Easter holiday celebrations, over 270 schoolgirls snatched from their dormitories in the North-Eastern state of Borno, Nigeria. The Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram have come forward to assume responsibility for the kidnapping, claiming that the girls were "slaves" whom they planned to sell in the market. The news went viral following the online campaign #BringBackOurGirls which prompted International leaders to join forces with the Nigerian government. The American government have deployed 80 military personnel to Chad in its effort to help find and return more the schoolgirls. The girls are yet to be found but the hunt continues.

Solange and Jay Z Gate

Jay Z was ferociously assaulted by Beyonce's sister Solange according to footage that was released earlier this month. Solange was seen wildly kicking and swinging at him inside an elevator and the attack was captured on surveillance video. This news shook the showbiz world as Jay and BeyoncĂŠ are usually referred to the King and Queen of modern music (Hip-hop and RnB). The family have since released a statement urging the public that the issue surrounding the attack has been resolved. Fans however, are still speculating about the events that led to the attack. The first half of the year has brought about a myriad of emotions and the latter half is set to be more exciting and mysterious. We do hope however, that the MH370 flight and the Nigerian school girls are returned safely. Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

HAPPY FATHERS DAY

Focus on Fashion

P

anache E-Magazine was fortunate to meet the renowned bespoke designer and stylist Kwame Koranteng, the man behind the well-known couture brand “KGTKKT” who specialises in both traditional and avant-garde bespoke tailoring. Kwame Koranteng’s unique flair, creativity, individuality and careful precision has fashioned hand-made suits cut for the modern man or woman using textured fabrics and statement accessories. Bespoke tailored Suits with a difference. Kwame Koranteng trained for almost four years at George Clothing until 2009 when he founded Kwame Koranteng Bespoke Tailoring “KKBT”. It was whilst he was working at George that he was taught to cut and fit in the most classical way. This traditional training combined with natural flair and the use of bold colours has put him at the forefront of bespoke tailoring today. His ability and willingness to work closely with each and every customer has earned him a loyal following, attracting television personalities, musicians, actors, artists. These include to name but a few. Whilst we offer a house style which is based on the London Cut (sharp shoulder/accentuated jacket waist/clean trouser line) we are also well known for design interpretation and flexibility.

His obsession with style as well as perfection has earned him considerable respect from his peers. He is widely recognised as a trendsetter and whilst he maintains his clearcut techniques he constantly evolves his contemporary style. As a consequence his work is frequently featured in a number of fashion shows, press and TV campaigns, and red carpet events. We asked Kwame a few questions just to get to know a little bit behind the man of this fantastic range. When did you first realise that you wanted to be in the tailoring business? I think from the age of 10. My dad was a head teacher and he use to wear a suit all the time. In his preparation, I used to help him iron his suits. He always looked so smart and sharp, and I think that is when I actually recognised that I had a passion for suits. I appreciated how powerful a suit can be and how a gentleman should dress. So what was your first responsibly when you started at George clothing? My first responsibility at George was doing fittings, taking the measurements and helping clients choose the right fabrics before I started cutting which was my main speciality (cutter) Did you get instantly promoted? No, I was a junior designer for almost 2 years before I was promoted as the head designer. Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

What made you leave? For as long as I can remember, I have always had a desire to work for myself but I also enjoyed working at George. But after 4 years, the company was experiencing financial difficulties and therefore offered me a choice of redundancy. It was a tough choice to make but things happen for a reason, and now I realise and am happy that I had made the right choice. And so when did you actually start your own bespoke tailoring business? After I left George Clothing, I took couple of months off just to get into my head what my next move was going to be. It took some time as the choice to go it alone was a bit daunting but after a few months I started trading from home. Once you had started, when did you realise that you could offer people clothing that they couldn’t get anywhere else? I was commissioned to design my very first suit soon after setting up at home. My client wanted a tweed suit which is a fabric that I personally love to work with. The cut and the small attention to detail that I had created on this suit made a difference and my client loved the way he looked in it And said excitedly testified “I was the best dressed person at the event, your suit did all the talking for me. Now I believe why you always say there is Power in a suit”. That was wonderful to hear and encouraged me to continue with my craft. Share an example of how you were able to motivate employee or co-workers with? My motto is: - “Hard work and perseverance will help you to achieve anything in life”. I remembered when one of my co-workers was experiencing difficulties in cutting. I encouraged him to stick with it and practice more. He is now a qualified tailor.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY What’s your favourite fabric to work with? I love tweed and tartan fabrics because they are very vibrant and colourful and fits in with my vivid personal style. What is your prime objective when designing your suits? When I’m designing a suit for a person, I pay particular attention to four things: - Firstly, I look at the colour which can symbolise so many aspects of their personality and aura. Secondly, I look at the fabric to ensure that I match the right texture. Thirdly, I look at the style which is very important as it defines that person. And last but not least, I look at the intricate details in the cut which will bring life to the suit.

Always remember; Don’t just wear a suit, wear one that speaks for you!!!. KKBT Why don’t you place your order with Kwame Koranteng Bespoke Tailoring? his Bank Holiday, May 25th and 26th, Panache E-Magazine attended the annual “Afro Hair & Beauty Live” show at North London’s Business Design Centre, 52 Upper Street, London N1. Billed as Europe’s largest exhibition dedicated to the Afro hair market. Now in its 33rd year, Afro Hair & Beauty is the event that showcases the very best in ethnic hair and beauty trends from across the globe. For two days, visitors experienced the ultimate hair and beauty experience. They were stimulated by a plethora of exhibitors who then encouraged you to indulge in the many treatments available at the pampering zones. T

he 3rd Annual Women4Africa™ Awards night took place at Kensington Town hall on Saturday the 9th of May 2014, it was such a great success. The Award was hosted by Lolo1 (Nigeria Radio presenter, TV personalty and comedian) alongside side Toya Washington (Presenter BEN TV). This was definitely a 10 out of 10 for organisation and standard. Women4Africa Awards which was founded in 2012 Sam and Tola Onigbanjo , designed to celebrate ordinary African women doing extraordinary things. The Award Night was hands down one of the best, most organised and quality award show there about. This is the 3rd year running and the quality and standard keeps on growing. All the Guest present at the Event had all good things to say about this Award night. Apart from the beautiful and powerful inspirational women that were in the building to make this a remarkable night, the set up, Arrangement, Decor, Hosting, Service, and Networking. The best part of this Award show is that it was very well ORGANISED and CO-ORDINATED which made everything flow nicely and a great Atmosphere to be in. The Night started with the Red Carpet pictures and Interviews with Champagne reception and Networking. There was a lot of attractions on the night, apart from the Awards itself, we had great speakers such as Dr clare Eluka (premaeskincare), Adebisi Osundeko (joy

and joe baby) and others. They had great performances from April Koyejo (An African Opera singer) she was heavenly. Vicky sola (who brought energy to the stage as always and sang beautifully). Women4Africa Patron Hon Abike DabiriErewa, welcomed the International delegates. The guests were in complete awe of the calibre of International African women from Dr Mary Okello and Captain Irene Koki Mutungi of Kenya to Queen Naa, Ambassador Sefa Boakye and Superintendent patience Naa Ashorkor Quaye and South Africa’s Dr.K S Maluleke and Creseldah Ndlovu. Also, Humanitarian award winner from Morocco, Fatima Khouchoua, and the new African International Woman of the year Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo of Nigeria. Although Nigeria’s Senator Daisy Danjuma and Mrs Uju Ifejiaka of (Britannia U) were at their respective sons weddings on the day they sent personal video messages and family representation. What a night of honour! The real fun and most entertaining part of the night is Lolo1 the host who did a fantastic job of making the Guest laugh and keeping us all entertained all through the Event with her cohost Toya Washington. Overall this was a great night, a big success. Women 4 Africa is doing great things with Celebrating African women but it is even a better organisation and Event that just made everything a Million Dollars. A very well done to Sam and Tola Onigbanjo and all the Women4Africa Team. http://www.women4africa.com/ women4africa-2014-winners/

o, I am Jenni, a London-based Redundancy Transition Coach and I help people like you to recover, reassess and reinvent themselves after they have been made redundant and are wanting to transition to something completely new. I am passionate about this because like you I was made redundant it was 2008 and it was like a bolt out of the blue, there was no-one to support me and nowhere I could turn, and I felt that if it was happening for me, perhaps I could do something to take away the pain that others go through as they navigate this significant life change.

114

JUNE 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

That is what made me specialise – with an HR background I was often witnessing how others were being treated when they were made redundant in terms of a lack of support, and I wanted to do something that would make redundancy transition easier, through a combination of coaching and workshops. So, back in 2008 I trained with International Training Seminars and became an accredited European NLP Coach. I currently provide Human Resources consultancy support to a Charity that supports people with diverse disabilities.

3 Steps to Managing Emotional Battles Redundancy (Part 1)

Your after

Are you on the receiving end of Redundancy and feeling both drained and challenged by the emotional Roller Coaster you are experiencing? Are you trying to keep a level head and steer your mind to think about what to do next? Being made redundant can throw you off course, and most people accept that a period of readjustment is to be expected. However, the psychological battles you face are often the unknown quantity and the most unwieldy part of the experience. Learning to take control of your emotions will hopefully enable you to take away something positive. According to the latest statistics there is a strong case for optimism in the jobs market at present, with current reports stating that there are approximately 30.19 million people currently in work – the biggest increase since records began, but when your role is snatched away from you, positive statistics are not what you turn to for reassurance that you will be okay.

Trying to make sense of your Feelings

I was called into what I thought was a routine business update meeting where the words “and your role is to be made redundant” were dropped into the conversation. It was like a bolt from the blue. I sat there with a pathetic half smile etched on my face. I could not think straight, I felt shocked, embarrassed, let down and betrayed – everything suddenly felt out of control, my head was spinning. The experience of redundancy typically acts like a catalyst that triggers a journey of transition which plays havoc with your emotions. In his research, Professor John Arnold from Loughborough University Business School charted the highs and lows of the stages experienced by those facing the turmoil of redundancy, and the key stages he highlights include the following common range of emotions that often occur.

Shock

Even when the writing is on the wall, the actual moment that you are told of your redundancy can give you a short, sharp shock that throws you off balance, you may even find yourself in a state of disbelief, half expecting to be told that actually you will not be affected and your specific role will be safe. Anger

After you have absorbed the impact of the shock then comes anger which often triggers a rush of emotions. This could include anger towards your organisation for letting you go, anger at colleagues you feel should have gone instead, or even anger towards yourself for letting this happen to you and placing yourself in the position of the victim. At this stage it is important not to allow your feelings to consume you because they may stop you from addressing any issues that may have led to your dismissal. Were there for example steps you could have taken that might have helped you side step redundancy, such as up-skilling or expanding the range of tasks you could competently perform?

Depression

Once the worst of any anger has subsided, it is not unusual for people who have been unemployed for any length of time to experience negative moods and possibly depression. Negative emotions are one of the most difficult groups of emotions to overcome because they can easily lead to a downward spiral. Depression in particular, is closely related to low self-esteem and low energy levels. A typical “spiral” that often emerges is one where you feel bad about yourself and experience a lack of energy, so you don’t put much effort into job applications, so you are not successful, which makes you feel worse about yourself, and so on. At times like this, it is important to remember that you are a person of worth, and that you have something valuable to offer. And while you may not be successful immediately, in the end you will be able to convince an employer that you are a valuable asset.

116

JUNE 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Depression is a serious condition and you should seek medical help if you feel that your situation is becoming too much to handle.

Guilt

Many people experience guilt post redundancy, often as a result of feeling that people close to them have been let down such as a partner and, or the children. It is important not to blame yourself during this stage since guilt can create distance between you and your loved ones. If you can take a step back and assess the situation objectively, it is likely that you will find that there were a number of factors that were completely outside your control, like a sluggish economy; advances in technology; reduced sources of funding for example, this will make it easier for you to accept the support of others.

Relief

Often the atmosphere in a company where redundancies are planned is unpleasant. For months morale could have been low among both those who “going” as well as the “survivors”. In such an environment regardless of how unfortunate a redundancy may be, you will probably be relieved that the uncertainty about being made redundant is over and be glad to be out of the situation. There is no timeline on how long the transition through the emotional upheaval normally takes, it depends on your individual circumstances and your coping mechanisms for handling anxiety, stress and change. ne of my favourite comedians, Louis CK, said: “Optimism is stupid, because optimism is saying ‘Maybe something nice will happen?’ No it won’t! Why would anything nice ever happen?” He was talking about being a balding, overweight, divorced father-of-two, but the sentiment applies pretty aptly to being an England fan - and not just because so many are balding and overweight. Euro 96 was probably the last tournament in which England could be judged to have done ‘well’, reaching the semi-finals. The new millennium was supposed to herald a ‘Golden Generation’ of England players. David Beckham. Michael Owen. Steven Gerrard. Frank Lampard. Rio Ferdinand. Need I go on? Yes. Ashley Cole. Wayne Rooney. John Terry. Sol Campbell. Paul Scholes. And yet every tournament has brought disappointment, after heartbreak, after disappointment, after masochistic heartbreak. For my generation, too young to remember the days of Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker’s England actually posing some kind of a threat, it’s all we’ve ever known.

Kieran Kicks Off World Cup Preview http://newsetcblog.wordpress.com/

Remember the 2002 World Cup? • The brief joy of Michael Owen’s opening goal against Brazil overshadowed by David Seaman flapping impotently at that free kick from Ronaldinho. Ugh. • Euro 2004? Portugal, penalties. Sigh. • 2006? Rooney sent off, Portugal again, penalties again. Spitting threats on the life of Cristiano Ronaldo at the TV. The word ‘metatarsal’. • 2008? Goddammit, we didn’t even qualify. Steve McClaren. Scott Bloody Carson. • 2010, Lord, don’t remind me. Rob Green, the draw with Algeria, getting Müllered by Germany. The only positive from that World Cup was that Frank Lampard’s “WHAT THE F*** THAT WAS CLEARLY A “goal finally prompted FIFA to consider goal-line technology. For over a decade, we argued and theorised about how to play Gerrard and Lampard together, about Rooney’s best position, about John Terry’s penis, about Emile Heskey’s general ongoing existence in the world of football. By 2012’s dreary Euro campaign, the reality had set in. ITV’s slogan for the coverage was a wistful “It’s good to dream”. Let’s face it, England are a bit crap.

But the first step is admitting it. The truth sets us free! You see, now that we expect nothing, our feelings can’t be hurt! We can only be either pleasantly surprised, or right. There are positives about this England team, the squad includes exciting young players like Raheem Sterling who’ve had great seasons for their clubs. But don’t forget their manager is Roy Hodgson. He’s not an awful manager, but he’s the enemy of excitement. I am excited about the World Cup in general. If the organisers manage to prevent Brazil’s disenfranchised poor from setting it on fire, there’s plenty for football fans to be optimistic about – Ronaldo and Suarez are in the form of their lives, Messi has a point to prove, Ivory Coast owe Africa a strong showing, Germany have only gotten stronger since 2010, Spain’s actual Golden Generation are looking to make history before they bow out, and Brazil will want to put on a show for the home crowd, But England? Stop kidding yourselves. Pessimism is your friend. Let it in, embrace it, marinate in it. Something nice might happen, and if it does that would be great. But it probably won’t.

Horoscope for June 2014

Mars is going to gather pace and leave the sign of Libra at the end of July! As we wait for this much anticipated emergence from the tunnel, we should prepare for the last stand of this warlike planet, who has been wreaking havoc throughout the cosmos, already under pressure from Jupiter, Pluto and Uranus since December 2013. They have been having a field day, happily adding fuel to the fire for quite some time, in particular ‌ where our great political, social, economic and financial systems and our lives in general are concerned! Be especially careful around 14th June, when unrest (armed conflicts, uprisings, pollution, disclosure of secret information ‌) are to be expected, as well as on 25th June, when Mars will create definite sparks. And the good news? Venus is going to embrace Jupiter on the 18th and build bridges, re-establish order and hold out for reconciliation both on earth and in the skies. At the very end of the month, the ray of hope held out to us by the partnership between Neptune and the Sun will awaken our ideals and could finally raise the level of debate!
